Him or Me
Pairing: Rafe Cameron x fem!Thornton!Reader
Warnings: language, topper being a slight asshole, small mention of parent death and absent parent, not proof read so potential grammatical errors, slightly ooc/fanon Rafe I think that’s all but please let me know if there’s anymore I should add
Summary: when Topper finds out his best friend Rafe is secretly dating his sister behind his back, all hell breaks loose. Will they be able fix their relationship? Or will the betrayal be too much to recover from?
A/N: This is the first story i’ve written in months so i’m still a little rusty. I wanted to get something out though to get back into the groove of things. Italicized means flashback, this also is meant to take place in season 1 after Sarah and John B are together so I hope you all enjoy🤍 I left the ending of this slightly open for a potential part two if people want it/I decide to write one (Topper is 19 and reader is 18 for the sake of this story, Rafe is his canon age in the show)
Tumblr media
“You know I’ll take care of you right?” he spoke with such certainty. How could you not believe him?
It was never supposed to be this way, you and your brother's best friend being together, but when he gave you those bedroom eyes and whispered those sweet nothings in your ear how could you resist? The both of you kept it a secret from Topper as long as you could knowing his overprotective nature when it came to you. He had found out when he saw the two of you kissing at the country club, that was a bad night for the three of you.
“My fucking sister dude? Are you kidding me? You could have any girl on this island but you go after my sister?” the vein on his neck popping out as he screamed at Rafe. Neither of you had expected him to be home, let alone for him to be waiting in the living room for you two to come back. As soon as Rafe stepped into the door he was thrown against the wall by his neck, a very angry Topper staring at him with pure hatred.
“Topper stop, let him go. Please.” you pleaded with him but it was no use, his grip stayed the same and he acted as if you weren't there. They were in their own world at that moment.
“Fucking relax man, I chose her for a reason. I love her, and you're not going to stop me from seeing her. So if you're going to hit me and tell me to stay away from her, do it so we can get this over with.” he was visibly annoyed by this as his tone confirmed it. Sure they were friends, but you meant more to Rafe than anyone else so your big brother trying to prevent your relationship was simply just an inconvenience that had no real effect at all.
The two men stared at each other for a moment, nostrils flaring and veins so visible you were getting concerned about their health. It wasn't until Topper let go of Rafe with a small scoff that you felt you could breathe again. You've never felt more shitty in your whole life than you did when Topper looked at you with such betrayal and hurt. He just shook his head and stormed out of the house, the front door slamming behind him.
“Are you okay? I'm so sorry, I didn't know he would be here” you say as you rush over to him and examine his neck that was now red (and would inevitably bruise) from the grip Topper had on it. He watched as you examined him with such worry and such a gentle touch that it reminded him yet again why he was with you, that you were worth whatever argument ensued because you showed him love nobody else would.
“Baby, I'll be fine. I'm more worried about you being okay than my neck.” grabbing the sides of your face and forcing you to look at him. Your eyes were glossy with tears and your breathing slightly uneven. Your relationship with Topper was different than the one Rafe had with his sisters, it had always just been the two of you since you were growing up. Your dad had died when you were babies and your mom was a piece of shit who was never around so that left the two of you to protect and raise each other. Hurting him felt like the biggest stab in the chest and you felt terrible.
“I-” your sobs overpowered your voice before you could finish as you broke down in your lover's arms. His shushed comfort helped bring you some peace but not nearly enough to stop the feeling in your chest from growing. He had moved you over to the couch and held you in his lap until your cries eventually stopped and your breathing remained calm.
“Baby?” he asked quietly in case you had fallen asleep. When he got no response, he gently laid you on the couch and covered you with a blanket before kissing your cheek and heading out to find your brother. Rafe was probably the last person he wanted to see but he would try to talk to him for you.
That “talk” didn't go very well. You didn't know what was said, all you know is that Topper came home bloodied and bruised and didn't say a word to you. It didn't take a genius to put two and two together when you saw Rafes bruised knuckles the next day and his excuse was that he “wanted to try boxing without his gloves”. But a few weeks had passed since then and you thought it would be fine, you and Top would go back to normal and eventually he and Rafe would reconcile like nothing ever happened. If only it was that easy.
Topper had grown increasingly hostile toward you when he decided to acknowledge your existence. His responses were always short and snappy like you were the most horrible person to be speaking with. You knew the only way of fixing this was breaking up with Rafe but there was no way in hell you were doing that so you instead just tried to give him space when you could. But one day he decided that ignoring each other wasn't enough, he needed you to know your options.
‘We need to talk’ one text that always has the ability to make your heart race. You stare at it for 10 minutes trying to figure out the right response before you type back a simple ‘Okay’, his next text telling you he’d meet you at the house in ten minutes. You felt like throwing up and your anxiety was through the roof. You knew what he wanted to talk about, that's what made you nervous. It felt like hours had passed when you finally heard the front door open and heavy footsteps approach the kitchen. Your heartbeat had become very quick when he came into your peripheral vision.
“Hi” a simple word used to greet people now had a more hostile meaning behind it. You finally looked up to see him but he was already looking at you. He still had that same look in his eyes he had that day. Betrayal, disgust, anger, every emotion you had hoped you'd never see him have towards you.
“Hi” your voice much smaller as you tried to avoid his hard gaze. An awkward silence passed for a few moments before he finally spoke again. There was clearly no small talk to be made so it was now or never.
“I'm giving you two options, and I never thought I'd have to say this to you of all people but I guess you really can't trust everyone. I understand you think you love Rafe and that he loves you, but you don't know him like me. Rafe Cameron doesn't ever love someone, he uses them to his advantage until he no longer needs them around and then he leaves them in the dirt. I'm not staying around to watch that happen to you so it's him or me.” his voice was stern, there was no hesitation in his words. He meant every last thing he had just told you.
You stared at him for a moment trying to process what you just heard, did he really just give you an ultimatum? You half expected him to laugh and tell you he was just fucking with you, that he was still upset you hadn't told him but as long as you were happy so was he, but that moment never came. Instead, he continued to stare at you with a pierced gaze waiting for your response.
“Are you serious right now Top?” you chuckled in disbelief. There was no way this was happening right now.
“As serious as a heart attack” no hint of amusement in his voice. Your emotion quickly changed from guilt to anger as his words finally registered.
“You have no right to do that. None. Rafe and I do love each other, we don't think that. You don't know our relationship and this was exactly why we didn't want you finding out. I'm not a baby anymore Topper. I'm a big girl and I can make my own decisions about things, including who I date. If that backfires that's on me and I learn from it. You don't get to decide that for me.” your face had turned red and you felt hot. How dare he make you choose between them.
“Y/N you don't understand okay? I know how he works, I've seen it happen. He's only going to hurt you when-” he tried to argue but you cut him off.
“No. You don't understand. He treats me better than anyone else ever has, he makes me feel loved. You don't know anything about love, that's why your girlfriend cheated on you with a fucking pogue.” his face fell at the comment. You knew it was harsh and uncalled for but you were too upset to care.
“Fuck you Y/N. I'm giving you one last chance to make the right choice” you knew he meant that.
“Fine. You want me to choose so badly? I choose him, I'll always choose him.” your breathing was heavy as you yelled at him. There was no taking it back now so you could only hope it didn't end badly for you.
“Okay” he scoffed “just don't come crying to me when he breaks your heart. You mean nothing to me anymore” he spoke with such disgust that it took everything in you not to cry.
“I won't. He's never going to do that to me” you spoke to him with the same voice he had spoken to you. The two of you staring at each other with anger and a look of disbelief that this had happened to you. Topper gave one last shake of his head before going up the stairs to what you thought was his room. It wasn't until you heard a loud thud a few minutes later that you realized he was in yours.
One by one, bags and boxes of your things came flying down the stairs. Topper was standing at the top with his arms crossed and a satisfied look on his face.
“You want to be with him so bad you can go stay with him. I don't want a lying whore living with me.” his words hurt you more than would ever admit but you swallowed your tears and began packing your car with your things, getting in and starting the car to drive to Rafes once the last thing was thrown in.
Tumblr media
He hadn't expected to see your text but all he could do was worry when you’d told him you were on your way to him. The only thing comforting him was pacing around the room and thinking of all the ways he could try and help you. He heard your call pull up and almost broke the door getting to you and his heart shattered when he saw you. Tears streamed down your face, eyes red and puffy, you looked destroyed.
As soon as you were in his arms you broke down, the both of you falling to the ground as your sobs echoed in the warm air. The familiar smell of Rafe's cologne made you feel safe, a feeling you hadn't fully felt since Rafe and Topper's fight. It felt like you were finally home and could relax, the war was over and you could just live again.
“Shh baby it's okay, you're safe now. I've got you” he said as he rested his head on top of yours and wrapped his arms around you tightly. There wasn't much that could be said to help you feel better about the situation but knowing you weren't alone did help to make you feel good. Topper was just jealous he didn't have this type of love with Sarah.
You'd finally calmed down enough to unload your things into Rafe's room. Ward adored you so letting you stay with them was absolutely no issue which you were so thankful for.
Hours had passed and your tears had long stopped. You had taken a nice long shower and now you were in bed with Rafe, it felt natural to you. He gave you a small nudge to get your attention and your eyes met his. He had a slight smirk on his face.
“What? Do I have something on my face” your eyes widening slightly worried you had forgotten to wipe some makeup off your face.
“No no it's not that, it's just… I could get used to this you know? It feels right” his voice was much softer now.
“It does, doesn't it? Maybe this whole situation isn't so bad after all” it was very bad, but maybe you could convince yourself otherwise if you said it enough.
Rafe could see you thinking about the situation again despite what you'd just said so he grabbed your face to hold it in place. His eyes never leaving yours for a second.
“You know I'll take care of you right?” and you had no doubt he would, fuck Topper. You just needed Rafe. He would never betray you like Topper, he would never hurt you the way your brother did. He loved you.
“I know” you smiled sweetly at him before giving him a soft kiss, both of you enjoying the moment of peace before pulling away to turn the lights off. Sleep slowly engulfing you as you relaxed into the others touch. This is how it was meant to be.
If only you knew exactly what getting involved with Rafe Cameron would turn into.

February 2nd - Happy Birthday, Shade Barrow!!
A/N 1: The deeper I thought about writing more Imagine Shade Was Still Alive stories, I realized I had to confront a certain aspect that soon revolved a specific image (guess which). This alternate concept takes place roundabout the King’s Cage chapters 16/17 (stress on alternate – I picked a date here but I can only assume when exactly it was in KC so the changes make it happen right then 😉).
Now in full length here on tumblr!!
Find this on Wattpad
Hidden Intentions
This door posed no resistance. Voices drifted through and became louder as Shade jumped inside, cleaving to the corner of the room as he counted three persons sitting on a bed crammed into an office. “… You’re sure this works? It’s not too demanding?” “It was your idea to ask, I just saw to it!” A helpless laugh escaped her throat and Shade startled as he recognized his sister. Before her brown eyes found him, the third touched her hand, winning her attention. “I’ve checked the supplies myself, we can do it,” the third, Cameron, agreed. She smiled at his sister who, despite smiling back, looked up just enough to notice him. Their gazes locked, freezing them both yet likely for very different reasons.
Shade sank into her eyes, wanted to. To see her safe, to see her at all, and, for the fragment of a heartbeat, to imagine Gisa’s eyes, so similar, were those of Mare who had been a hostage for three months now. “What are you doing here …?” Gisa whispered and truth be told, he could’ve asked her the same. But no one replied as Gisa started to giggle like a fool, a habit that felt so awfully normal like home that it hurt. Everyone was blushing as his entry became obvious to the other two, also the first speaker, who finally turned her head over her shoulder, not the least bit surprised to see him. “That’s inaccurate,” Diana said. “The real question is, what took him so long?” She smirked at him yet despite her amused tone, worry showed in her frown that Gisa and Cameron couldn’t see from this angle. An angle, he couldn’t help noticing, becoming her marvellously with the way her chin-long curls framed her cheek. No, he wasn’t beyond being left speechless by her beauty when she glowed like this. He had no idea how long the awkward silence lasted until he snapped out of it and stepped over, resting his hand on Diana’s shoulder before she rose and went to him. After quickly exchanging glances, strangely nervous, Cameron and Gisa jumped up, shoving together the papers on the bed. Diana slammed shut the folder and Gisa hugged him. “I’m glad to see you”, he told her quietly although he still didn’t know what she did here in the Rocasta base, so near to military operations. “So am I,” Gisa replied, released him and left, taking Cameron by the hand. “What was going on here?” he asked as he dropped behind Diana on the bed, unstrapping his boots. “Classified information,” she answered but he heard – she couldn’t hide it from her tone, he knew her well enough now – that she wasn’t all business. He snorted, done with the shoes, and inched closer until their legs met and his chest was to her back. She sighed, but his digging she must’ve expected didn’t come. Indeed, he didn’t care, not right now. What he wanted was just this, leaning on her, his face on her neck breathing in her scent. His arms embraced her from behind, hands resting on her six-months-belly. An instance of grounding, only strengthened by the tiniest flutter he could feel of their baby. He longed to forget his shame by holding his world in his arms. This part at least. Diana weaved his fingers with his, her posture shifting ever so slightly until he couldn’t say who leaned on who. “I really wondered what took you so long, you were expected back half a day earlier,” she said eventually. He hmphed. “Not unusually late.” “You’re so quiet.” “Classified information,” he murmured. She stirred while he hugged her closer. “Maybe better this way,” she said. She must be rolling her eyes. “That I don’t give you orders anymore.” But her pulse was quickening against his cheek. He’d been sent on missions she wasn’t responsible for, true, and it left her scared for him despite everything. He understood that well enough, his own worry for her currently quelled knowing she held back due to her pregnancy. Still, her reaction flustered him when, ironically, she was wrong in this specific case. “You needn’t have worried, Dee,” he said, and she released a relieved breath, likely thinking of a relatively harmless operation. Well, it had been, and he yearned to leave it at that, to stay a few minutes longer in this intimate cocoon. He doubted he had the right to make a wish right now, when he’d already chosen safety. Just one more second, one kiss on the bare part of her shoulder, and he broke the embrace, sinking on the floor to his knees to face her. He met her eyes, then lowered his gaze, gathering himself once more. His fingers playing with a loose curl of hers. Looking up, he confessed. “I strayed from orders.” She raised her eyebrows. “Now that’s nothing new but it doesn’t sound – ” “Safe? It was completely, utterly reckless. I could only hope not to be too stupid. “Because I aimed to free Mare.”
The Scarlet Guard used Shade as backup for escapes sparingly, regarding the limits to people he could bring with him. When he wasn’t assisting in the taking of Corvium, his new handler Blake sent him on reconnaissance missions. Shade kept waiting for assassination orders though they never came – so far. Due to his ability, it tended to be spotty work, often including theft and sabotage rather than infiltration. Between jobs, that left him chances to see Diana who planned altogether different operations. Growing enmeshed with Command as she was, who knew how far she was aware how he was tied into the greater picture. Unlike during their first cooperations, Diana appeared fine with it now, him under another’s orders. He felt less so and as Blake had Shade follow the front movements and searching Corvium for weak spots, he’d been itching to approach the royal progress. It happened that he was to visit the same locations – afterwards, to listen for whispers of treason against King Maven. Bitterness filled Shade as he was close but carefully kept away from Mare, who was always on the screens beside her captor. Shade had believed it reasonable. He’d seen the brutal results of Nanny’s infiltration. He’d stayed behind during the failed pro-Cal coup. But while the banished prince was reined in, he’d helped the Guard win Corvium, cheered with them as Cameron’s brother Morrey was freed even as everyone chewed at still seeing Mare as the king’s trophy and mouthpiece. When he received the orders three days ago, Shade had had enough of waiting and playing safe. He had this ability that had proved so useful, had saved his loved ones’ lives so many times, he had a duty to Mare to at least try. Would she not expect him to try? He would grind his teeth no longer and enter the royal party. The opportunity sounded almost a ploy, find out who the king was meeting at the Choke, implying that Shade would evade Maven and come from the other side. This time, he picked the confrontation.
“I’ve learned to master standing around silver residences without notice. Even before I stole a sentinel uniform, no one took issue with me. It was almost too easy, eavesdropping for the official mission in the meantime. I only had to teleport when no one would wonder at sudden appear – or disappearances. Everyone knew where the royal party was staying, and this residence had little difference to others, and they love to gossip about Mare. It hurt to hear, but I needn’t care when I’d succeed, right?
“Security increased the closer I got but I still came through in the disguise. And then I knew. I didn’t see the door, I felt it. The wall of silence beyond the door.
“I was hit by it just by starting to teleport. I never … It happens in a blink, usually. There, I noted how every bit of me would materialize and I wasn’t sure if I’d be just slow or appear in bits. What I knew was that it was impossible to bring Mare with me. She’s shackled in silent stone! No idea how they manage it. How she endures. I …” But he had no words for the thought. It expressed itself as a sob he tried to swallow.
Diana never let go of his hand as he told her – his dominant left clasped by both of hers. It didn’t help either of them to keep from shaking.
“I just stopped. Stood there, about to get caught after all, calculating if there wasn’t a way, any way.” He shook his head.
Diana’s hold grew tighter. “You were alone. You couldn’t have expected …”
Shade faced her and she must’ve grasped his meaning in his eyes as she startled. She still didn’t let go, like a buoy. He straightened. “So I left. Ran away. Jumped out of their base and barely hid my disguise on my way back here.”
She shifted closer, face inches above his. “It’s as you should’ve done. Shade. The only thing you could.” She swallowed. “You gathered intel and retreated before you were trapped and arrested. To know how Mare is kept –”
He pulled his hand away. “Don’t talk about this like such an officer.” She blinked. “I know that. I’ve tried to explain it to myself the whole last day. And I haven’t felt a drop less guilty for it.”
“You …” Diana moved to hug him and he prevented her by cupping her cheeks.
This moment, he needed his gaze to hold on to her eyes. “I didn’t think practical,” he whispered. “I went, selfishly, out of desire, and ended it for it as well. It was pure need to survive. For you. I couldn’t bear the risk of not coming back to you, leaving our child behind. Not even for Mare.”
Diana slid off the bed, hugging him as she sank to sit on his knees. A sob escaped his throat.
“There was no chance,” she reminded him.
He closed his eyes, resting his head in her chest. “You said you wouldn’t pick – us or the cause. You say you’ll do both, both is important. With only one absolute – keep our baby alive. But I did. Choose. I picked us over Mare.” Tears wetted her sweater. “It’s my shame and yet I don’t regret it.”
Her hands rubbed his back, through his hair. “We’ll do better. I promise you, we’ll do better and free her.”
Her words were a lifeline, a tether that did little to diminish the raging waves of his heartbeat. “You hate promises,” he said.
Diana snorted faintly. “I’ve kept working on it.” She kissed his temple. “You don’t know all progress we make. Mare is fighting, and we’ll come from the other front.”
He woke to the smell of coffee. Its vitalizing odour filled his nose, steam warming his face as he opened his eyes.
Diana smiled at him, already unfairly groomed. She stroked his arm. “A drink to get you up, but breakfast waits in the mess hall.” The corners of her mouth dropped. “Did you even eat last evening?”
Shade struggled to find his limbs to rose and sip the coffee. They’d stayed cuddled last night, barely managing to undress before he fell asleep. He shook his head, exhaustion clinging to every part of his body, eyes sore from crying. Tentatively, he tested the first swallows of the brew. “I had a bite. When I was debriefed.”
Diana patted his leg. “You still had something to report?”
“Enough. The ones around ... well, they know enough.”
She narrowed her eyes. “What?”
He downed the rest of the mug. “I thought we professionals keep quiet?” He made light of it but no grin entered his face. “What’s the plan for today?”
She sat down next to him and put an arm around his waist, looking at him inquiringly. “Work out. A meeting. Supply chain check, finances, the usual. But fresh up first, then breakfast.”
They held hands on the way to the mess hall and after a shower, Shade felt almost alive. Yet he was glad of Diana’s pampering and idle conversation.
“Gisa has applied to the guard a while ago, with your brothers,” she explained when he asked. “Only the support we task minors with and … it was chance she was called to Rocasta while we are here, too. Yes.”
“Hm. I don’t like it still. Can’t you make an exception and put in a word about what she does?”
Diana drew in a breath.
He sighed. “Okay, okay, spare me the lecture.”
“A bit protective, are we?”
He squeezed her hand, glancing at her. “Increasingly.”
She bumped his shoulder. “She gets along with Cameron really well. They met before we’ve freed Cameron’s brother and they feel similarly, apparently. Being the same age and with a sibling as hostage.”
“Just ‘feeling similarly’?” he teased.
She grinned. Maybe more than that.”
“I really didn’t notice.” He shook his head. “I overlooked her, with all other things.”
“We have a lot to shoulder.” Having reached the mess hall, she turned to him. Her other hand splayed on her belly, the first time since he returned. She must’ve refrained to absent-minded touches until now, to focus on him. That was hard for her, he knew. She already loved the baby so much, the mere anticipation shaped her into a new, lighter-hearted person, a hidden aspect of her he hadn’t been aware of.
Himself, he wasn’t so sure. Her excitement carried him along, his love for her had him follow her everywhere. The thought of letting her down pained him. He didn’t know what to expect while he also couldn’t wait to meet their child and he felt an undeniable duty to them, yet the shape of this duty remained beyond his grasp.
“Don’t you want to go in?” he said, glancing to the mess hall.
Again, she looked at him in this strange way of this morning and sighed. “Are you ... ready for the world?”
He cackled, clasping the door handle. “What else is there?” He stepped over the threshold, even as Diana stood still for an eyeblink.
“Wait –”
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHADE!!”
He stumbled at the loud cheer, his hand going to his heart in exasperation. He almost fell against Diana who’d sidled close again. Gladly, he leaned against her as he calmed himself, assessing the congregation.
The party.
Everyone was there, or so it seemed at least. Gisa, Cameron and her brother Morrey, his brothers – even his parents! People he knew from the Notch and other comrades he’d recently worked with. Some weren’t there, of course, like Kilorn and Cal, but he saw Sara and Julian and even Diana’s father, skulking around … that dick. Maybe Diana was gracious he tried but Shade couldn’t stand the way the colonel was so clearly uncomfortable behaving like, well, family, and Shade hated how that had hurt Diana over the years and she didn’t dare addressing that openly.
Diana clutched his arm, whispering into his ear. “I’m sorry, I decided to tell you just a moment too late …” He nodded, helplessly. “I thought you were aware, of the date, and just didn’t make a big thing of it …”
His disbelieving gaze wandered from the assembly to the filled tables, back to Diana.
“I …” Indeed, he had been aware of his birthday on February 2nd, not expecting anything of it. He wasn’t certain Diana would remember the timing or prepare anything, regarding the one or two times they’d mentioned birthdays … but it was him who’d forgotten about what day it was entirely the moment he’d stood before Mare’s gilded prison door and panicked.
He was relieved Cal wasn’t there, right now. To look at him, after what Shade and attempted and failed at, knowing that Cal wanted the same – he needed time to process that.
Shade straightened, borrowing posture from the steel in Diana’s eyes. Then he cupped her face and kissed her, hard.
The others clapped.
Letting go, swallowing a laugh caused by the silly clapping, he cleared his throat and spread his arms, doing his best of playing the role of the stunned and grateful birthday kid.
Glossing over them staring at him expectantly for likely minutes now. “What have you bleeding done here!” he exclaimed. “Thank you so much!” Already, they rushed to hug or shake hands to congratulate him and he swam into the flood. It was easy to do, go with the flow to drown the shame he’d arrived in. Shade excelled at pretending and blending in and today, they deserved a happy reaction. And he wanted to, to enjoy friends, family, and comrades. They had gathered here, bringing and preparing all that wonderful food he just about realized he was starving for.
The mess hall looked like a silver bakery in Harbor Bay, tables laden various warm breads, all different shapes, sizes and toppings, a spread of meat and cheese slices, eggs, cakes and puddings. The first bite of dark bread with grated carrots, still soft, fresh from the oven, warmed his entire self. The guests recommended snacks and he followed the advice gladly. Cakes fluffy like clouds, excitingly crunchy or tasteful compounds of nuts and fruits, he took every bite as he fell into the chatter and remembered they’d all come despite knowing Mare wasn’t there.
Could they not celebrate despite her captivity?
Could Shade deny them this?
His father, the last one he’d expected to meet here, told him how Sara was looking at replacing his leg and improving his lungs and Shade didn’t want to stop embracing him as his father commented on the frontlines.
Bree teased him that he’d barely escaped becoming a teen dad, now that he was twenty, and Tramy embellished an adventure about procuring the food and preventing a disaster when making the cakes with Gisa, Cameron and Morrey. It sounded so similar to chaotic past birthdays, at home, in the Stilts, where one midnight after the party, Shade asked Kilorn to practise kissing as a present and Kilorn complied.
Julian tapped his shoulder and offered him fried apple rings in dough, and, self-deprecating as Julian could be, confessed he put in extra efforts because it was his birthday, too, and they shared hilarious mirrored congratulations.
The colonel told him his first name was Willis and Shade made himself say it.
The talking and feasting went on until his mouth strained and, looking for his mother, he finally found Diana again, sitting next to her. His mother, smiling like the sun, hugged him tight and yet it was she alone who openly bore that heavy sadness in her eyes that Shade was only hiding. He didn’t have to pretend with her. Yet she also understood the meaning of celebrating right now.
In the end, as the congregation shushed them away to clean up, Diana rose and cupped his cheek. “Do you forgive me?” she asked.
He blinked. “Didn’t I show you?” he countered, and kissed her again, softer but longer. Their brows rested against each other. Both of them the same height – with Diana slightly taller –, it felt so clear how equally matched they were and with the arms around each other, they started to sway as if there were music to dance to.
“The next time – ,” he began, “ – when is your birthday again?”
Diana groaned, chewing her lip. “In May … you know, the due date …”
He grinned. “You’re still embarrassed about that?”
She gasped, slapping his chest. “You remembered all along!”
He grabbed that hand that bumped him, rising it to his lips to kiss. “No one knows if it’ll be the same day for real, calm down.” His smile faded. “But I want one thing to be certain.” She found his eyes, questioningly. “To have Mare at the next party.”
“She will be,” Diana confirmed once more but apparently less convinced than last night.
Shade nodded, his gaze striving away. Maybe they didn’t need assurance, and hope had to be enough.
After today, he thought he could start with that.
A/N 2: CAMISA SHOULD’VE HAPPENED
For a long time, I was a bit uninspired for Shade’s birthday post this year until I had an idea this Sunday morning. It’s weird, it feels like I teleported into Fadeland since I have created this in five days after I spent almost eight joyful months in Fadeland last time, happily procrastinating! ^^° I will continue the Shade/Farley birthday posts at least until next year for the 10 year Red Queen jubilee.
However, I have to apologize:
For excluding Cal, I’m so sorry for those who hoped for him but just considering to include him in the party is so awkward. Having Shade look into his Cal’s puppy eyes wishing his brother(-in-law) happy birthday while he must be thinking about how everyone chided Cal for impulsively making Mare a priority in risky operations with Shade then doing the same to utterly fail and be comforted by his very present pregnant girlfriend – the party would’ve crashed right then (or Shade would’ve filled his mouth with food and just replied with a “hm, thanks”). But Shade will confess this to him later on and they’ll have a deep bonding talk about Mare and love and siblings!
For the off-handed mention of Shade kissing Kilorn – I’ve considered both Farley and Shade as bi for years but never grasped the chance to state this for Shade (maybe in my Calorn AU, a little) and thought today, now or never, even though it became just a tiny bit. I hope to do better in future, should not another writing block or technical problem happen.
My inner bread snob jumped out, sorry not sorry. I thought about how often characters – usually girls – can describe delicious food in books only to not eat it in the end and while it’s a man here, I wanted to say fuck that, go binge
They’re so angstily dramatic
I hope you enjoyed, and once again:

My biggest question is: how are they going to wrap all the stories in 40 minutes!?!!??
There’s a lot to tell: Madney, the bridge thing, the sperm donor story, Natalia/Marisol, hopefully some Buddie…
I’m really intrigued about how they’re gonna play it all!
It's a LOT for 40 minutes, I am not completely sure that they can wrap all of it up in one episode.
I have a feeling that for all of KR love for wrapping up stories for the season, this one has the potential to end on a cliffhanger.
I believe that the Madney situation may only be resolved next season, the bridge thing is totally dependent on when in the episode it happens, if it is at the end of 6x17, like 4x13 when Eddie was shot? Or maybe a cliffhanger where we're left to wonder if one of our favorite firefighters live through this disaster.
Buck's talk with Connor told me two things, one Connor is not entirely sure he wants a baby or ready to have one, now that it's a reality, and something is waiting just around the corner for Buck.
Now the clown in me says that all the references from both Buck and Eddie to the future and things becoming very real very soon have a hidden, or maybe not so hidden, message that buddie canon is very near. I'm optimistic that way.
So Buck, imo, came to terms with the sperm donor thing, but I don't think the couple itself has their story resolved. I'm semi hoping they ask Buck to be godfather, or for Connor to get cold feet and for Cameron to come to Buck for help with her birth and later with the baby.
But those are all fanfics materials lol, we'll see.
The Cameron thing, imo, will probably happen in the beginning of the episode, thus leaving the firefam to maybe discuss it as the universe screams at them again, that life is short and they're wasting time.
I'm thinking maybe Natalia helps Buck come to terms with something, and they separate as friends or whatever, because dating Natalia will be pretty much dating Taylor under another profession, but same attitude.
Natalia is an interesting character, but she doesn't feel concrete enough to stick around, I think she's just a way for Buck to move past his ordeal and come to terms with whatever is holding him back now.
In my experience, those that find death fascinating were either touched by it (family members or trauma of some sort) or are facing the possibility of their own mortality, Natalia's motives to why she chose to be a death doula may shed light on what her function in this story is. -So if the disaster doesn't happen at the beginning of the episode, Natalia may show up to wrap up her appearance in this show at the beginning of 6x18.
Marisol, I'm pretty sure, is one if the victims most probably, in the bridge crash, I can't see any reason as to why she would suddenly show up, unless it's another one of Pepa's attempts at matchmaking lol.
If they do manage, by some miracle, to shove all of those things into one episode, it will probably end up being hurried and leave us with the same unsatisfied feeling we all experienced at the end of 3x18. (At least for me and my mutuals.) The train wreck resolution felt very anticlimactic, so I'm hoping 6x18 doesn't suffer the same fate.
As I've said before, this whole season we've been counting down to some bonus, as far as I'm concerned, it's time to put up or shut up, because we can't have so much character developments on all levels with all the characters only to be fated to watch them making the same mistakes all over again.
I do hope that we get a Bobby sending Buck away, while he and Ravi try to get to Eddie. While Buck, worried about Eddie, is making his way to save his older sister Hen and his future brother in law.
It's known from one of the bts pic that Chimney will be hurt badly, so I'm expecting something, emotional and heart-wrenching and frantic maybe, and maybe a little crazy Buck stunt 👀
Tumblr media
I'm hoping, that once Eddie and Buck reunite we'll finally get a hug or better yet, a desperate 'you're a sight for sore eyes, I fucking love you' kiss.
Manifest with me 🙏✨️✨️✨️
Ps. Also manifest Buck's couch catching fire and Buck moving to the Diaz household where his favorite and chosen couch resides. 😌✨️🙏

There was just something about rebelling against your big brother’s wishes that made your relationship with Rafe Cameron so much more rewarding than it already was.
See, John B believed that you could do no wrong. You were his darling, sweet angel little sister, and you’d never do something like date his modern day equivalent of a nemesis.
It was good at first—perfect, even. Like a fairytale come true. Rafe would take you out to fancy dinners, buy you expensive gifts, show you off for the entirety of the Outer Banks to see. You were his girl, and that made you feel special. Important. It was one of the reasons why you fell in love with him in the first place.
But as your relationship went on, something in it shifted. Little things started blowing up into big arguments, you began spending less and less time together, and you stopped feeling that flutter in your chest that you used to every time you saw him. Something was different between the two of you, and you could feel that whatever it was, it wasn’t going to end well. A storm was creeping in, and neither you nor Rafe were ready for the downpour.
It got to the point where both of you were aware of what was happening, but neither of you wanted to address it, because if you did, then it would make it real. All good things came to an end, and that end was in sight for you both. It wasn’t good for you to keep pretending like nothing was wrong, but you didn’t want to lose Rafe.
You’d even gone so far as to try talking to John B about it one day when you were both sprawled out on the couch at the Chateau.
“I think Rafe and I are gonna break up soon.” You said softly, so soft that John B thought he was hallucinating it. But when he looked over at you and saw that you looked like you were about to cry, he knew it wasn’t just in his head. Honestly, John B didn’t know how to feel about it. Sure, he hated Rafe with everything he had in him, but there was no denying that Rafe Cameron had made you happy these last few months.
“Sorry to hear that.” He sighed, patting your hand sympathetically.
You glanced over at him suspiciously. “That’s it? No, ‘I told you so’, no sarcastic remark?”
“I mean, I definitely don’t like the guy, you know that. But you’re still my baby sister, and when you’re having boy troubles, I’m here. No judgment.” John B’s voice was sincere, and it meant the world to you. “D’you want advice, or just a listening ear?”
“I could go for both, actually.” He nodded, waving for you to continue. “Things have been…different between us lately. I don’t know what changed, and I don’t want this to be the end with us, but I just—I don’t think we feel the same about each other like we did in the beginning. Like, I’ll always love him, but I’m not in love with him anymore.”
“You’re scared. It’s okay to be scared.” John B murmured, scooting closer to you on the couch and slinging a comforting arm around you. “My advice? Talk to Rafe about how you’re feeling. And if this really is the end of your relationship, you gotta let him go. It won’t do either of you any good to keep clinging to what you used to be.”
“When did you get so insightful?” You hummed, resting your head on his shoulder.
“What do you mean ‘when’? Big brotherly wisdom just oozes out of me all the time.”
“First off, never say oozes ever again,” You snorted. “And second…thank you for the advice. Looks like you’re not totally useless after all.”
You got a pillow to the face at that, John B gasping in mock offense. “Take that back!”
-------
Turns out, you didn’t even need to be the one to bring up your feelings, because Rafe was the one to start the conversation that both of you were dreading to have.
You were over at his apartment prepping date night dinner one evening when he took a seat at the kitchen counter, sitting across from where you were chopping veggies in silence for a stretch before speaking up.
“We need to talk.” He said softly, propping his chin up in his hand on the cold granite counter. One look at him, and you could feel your heart start to sink into your stomach. You knew what was happening. “This isn’t working for us anymore. We both know that.”
“We can fix us, Rafe,” You insisted with a shake of your head, setting down the knife and reaching across the counter for him. “We can fix this.”
He retracted his hand from the space between you on the counter, jaw clenching at the way your face fell at that. “We’ve been trying, Y/N. And it hasn’t been working. Not for a long time now.”
You were silent for a long while before responding, because as much as you hated to admit it, Rafe was right. “What happened to us, Rafe? How did we get here?”
Rafe rounded the island, easing your whitened knuckles off the edge of the countertop and pulling you into a hug. With your head on his chest, you could hear his heart beating rapidly, as you were sure yours was too.
“Some people just aren’t meant to be,” He murmured against your hair, pressing a kiss to the top of your head before pulling away to look down into your eyes. “But that doesn’t mean that what we had meant any less. I’ll always be grateful for everything you gave me, Y/N.”
“Me too,” You whispered, squeezing your eyes shut tightly, as if that would stop the shakiness in your voice from taking over.
“Hey, hey, don’t cry,” He chided gently, brushing away your falling tears with the soft sleeve of his sweater. But when you looked up at him, you could see tears welling in his own eyes too. “We still have today. Forget about everything, and just be here with me tonight. Think of it as a farewell party.”
You managed a watery giggle. “A farewell party to our relationship?”
“Exactly that. A farewell and a celebration of everything we’ve given each other these past few months.” Rafe nodded, cupping your cheek in his palm tenderly. His thumb swiped feather-soft under your eye, and you couldn’t help but bring yourself up on your tiptoes and kiss him, one last time. Everything you were feeling poured into that kiss—sadness, understanding, love.
As much as it pained both of you, you’d finally reached the end of the road. It was time to let each other go.

We’re back, ladies!  Matthew Morgan has returned, and he’s two years older that he was when we last saw him.  You can start from the beginning of Full Circle on Ao3.  Enjoy!
Chapter One
He’s got his headphones on, and the greater world doesn’t exist.
Instead, he is completely absorbed in a soundscape from half a world away.  Slavic mutterings blend easily with searing hot street pans, static-soaked rain, and a continuous strand of muffled, melodic folk songs.  His mind wanders back to the sights and smells—God, the smells—of Leningrad and his long evenings spent bargaining over peppers, and pickles, and potato soups worth waiting for.  He remembers the stone at his feet and every nuanced inch of dialect.  He remembers the stinging scent of iron statues after a long summer rain, and he remembers dancing well into the night.  His time spent studying in the Soviet Union returns to him in waves, triggered by the sound of heavy voices.
In comparison, Virginia seems pale and flat.  He spends his days in darkness, translating conversations that ain’t got much meaning.  He spends his nights split between a gym and a government assigned studio apartment that ain’t got much room.  While his stomach yearns for the comfort of a freshly prepared stroganoff, he’s absentmindedly downing M&Ms for lunch instead, bought from the nearby vending machine for the third day in a row.
He tells himself that the peanuts have protein, and does his best to ignore his mama’s voice lecturing him in the back of his mind.
Just as he begins to debate which song would sound best through his specially designed, Army funded headphones (a downright unbreakable tie held between Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now and Pink Floyd’s Welcome to the Machine), he catches a familiar voice through a bugged frequency.  He’ll auditorily observe the subject in question for another two hours or so as he continues to debate whether or not anyone can truly top Queen anyway.
He loses track of the time, dissolving into the looping, mindless effort of transmission and translation.  It could be one hour or it could be four, but eventually, he feels the tap of two fingers on his shoulder, yanking him back into uniformly measured time.  “You ready, son?”
Cooper seems to have aged five years in the past two.  This war, however quiet, grinds at his very bones.  “Yes sir,” is all Matt has to say before the two of them are on the move.
The rare break in his usually predictable afternoon is when he’s asked to take part in one of the half-dozen intelligence briefings that occupy the various conference rooms throughout the day.  They’re the kind of starkly boring meetings that are inevitably pushed back by the hour, as a result of the world’s decidedly unboring events—tension in the Middle East, or advances between the Koreas, or battle carriers crossing over into waters that ought not to be crossed into.  Before long, his 13:00 briefing becomes a 15:27 coffee break and he’s written all of his notes for nothing.
And sure enough, the room smells of a stale dark roast as Cooper leads them in.  He leaves Matt with a pat on the shoulder, then makes himself comfortable by the carafe.  “Gentlemen,” he says, pouring himself a cup.  “If y’all are ready.”
The general consensus of the room seems to be that, yes, they are ready and that, no, they will not be staying for very long.  It’s a handful of officers who rank well above him, each of them taking a seat around the great concrete table at the center of the room.  Matt distributes an armful of identical manila envelopes, dodging chairs as they lean and spin and scooch.  He lands at the head of the table in front of a chalkboard with long erased markings from a previous presentation.  There’s a headphone-fueled haze that still swims around his mind, so he sharpens up with a breath.
Finally, he flips open the first page of his folder and everyone else in the room follows suit.  “Gentlemen,” he says.  “If you’ll all join me on page three of the transcription report, I’d like to point out the suspected Soviet interference with the growing tension in Poland.”
The hardest part about these briefings is that no one asks any questions.  Everyone sitting before him knows more than he does, and any information he discovers is just one strand in a web that men far smarter than him are meant to decipher.  He is met with only the click of a pen.  The squeak of a chair.  Matt hasn’t got much time, so he doesn’t linger on the silence.
“You can find a detailed analysis on page thirty, should you need to reference it at a later time, but in summary: one of our bugs successfully picked up a poker game in Moscow that included, among others, two high-ranking Polish officials, a former member of the KGB, and the USSR defense minister.  Based on this conversation, it’s likely that the Polish People’s Republic will succumb to the rising anit-communist movement by late July—early September at the latest.”
Click, click, click.  Someone in the room favors fiddling with their pen, rather than writing with it.  Still, there is no comment, but Matt has learned that sometimes, the lack of critique can be a legitimate success.
“The Soviets are discussing the possibility of aid.  They’ll do whatever it takes to keep the unions out of power, and it’s likely we see a repeat of the 1970 strikes—”
“Who did your Polish?”
It’s another voice in the room and, more than that, it’s a question he doesn’t quite understand.  He’s usually so quick to respond, answers falling out of him, full of information that’s bursting at the seams.  But he’s never heard this voice before, and he doesn’t understand the question.  “Sorry?”
He looks up across the table, and lands on the man who holds his pen at eye level, thumb on the button.  His tag reads Smith and his free hand is split into a series of bookmarks throughout various pages of the report.  “There’s a few lines of Polish in the transcript,” he says.  “Who translated it?”
Smith is greying at his temples, but he doesn’t look old.  Just a pair of smile lines.  Some faint crows feet.  He doesn’t strike Matt as a simple man, but the question feels so far behind.  “I did, sir.”
This carves a little crease right in the center of Smith’s forehead.  Another wrinkle.  “My mistake,” he says.  “I thought you translated the Russian.”
Matt blinks.  “Yes, sir.”
At some point during the course of his military intelligence career, Matt has stopped encountering people who act impressed.  In Hay Springs, Nebraska, everything is impressive.  But in Army Intelligence, everyone has seen everything there is to see.  They know everything there is to know.  In a field run and operated by people who thrive on preemptive strategy, there just aren’t a whole lot of surprises.
Smith ain’t impressed.  But he could get there real soon.  “You translated this entire transcript?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I didn’t realize you were trained in both languages.”
It’s Cooper’s turn to talk now and when he does, he speaks with one of those wide smiles that tells everyone else he knows something that they don’t.  “He ain’t.”
With that, all eyes are back on Matt.  Intelligence officers from every branch of the military look on with an expectant glare, waiting.  There’s an explanation owed, definitely, but the answer to this particular question isn’t written out in his meticulously constructed manila folders.  “There were only nine lines of Polish, sir.”
It doesn’t change Smith’s stern expression.  “Which is significant because…?”
The silence feels louder than ever before.  He shuffles through his papers, checking his own facts as he speaks.  “This conversation took place over the course of four hours.  And the Polish is, frankly, insignificant.  Conversational.  It would have taken at least a week to get a formal Polish translation and all of the important parts are in Russian.  This is time-sensitive information and the most efficient means of obtaining it was if I just did it myself.”  He looks up.  “Sir.”
Smith studies him, in a way that Matt ain’t used to being studied.  “And where did you learn to speak Polish?”
There aren’t many urges that can break through Matt’s military mindset nowadays, but in this moment, it takes everything he has not to shrug.  “Spend eight hours a day with Slavs in your ear, you start to pick up on what they’re saying.”
People in this line of work are never impressed, but if they are, they might look a lot like Smith does in that moment.  “Sorry, you picked up Polish?”
“The two are very similar,” Matt says, and it occurs to him that Smith probably already knows this.  “Sir, is there a concern about the accuracy of the translation?  Because I can—”
“No concerns,” says Smith with a wave.  “It’s a spot on interpretation.  I was going to compliment your co-translator—some of these words don't have direct English translations.  The kombinować, as an example—”
“Yeah, I’m not sure that the connotation is correct there—”
“It is,” Smith says, leaning forward in his chair.  He sets his pen down, lets the report fall to a close, and crosses his hands atop the table.  “Nevertheless, it appears as though the person I should be complimenting is you, Mr…”
“Morgan,” he says.  “Matthew Morgan.”
“Right, Mr. Morgan,” he says with a smile.  “Any other languages we should know about before we proceed?”
He suspects that this question doesn’t truly require an answer, but Matt ain’t one to leave superior officers to linger.  “Well sir,” he says.  “My German is getting pretty good, but that one only just started to click a few months ago, so it’ll probably be another couple of weeks before I’m fluent.”
He’s not trying to be funny, but even so, both Smith and Cooper break out into a low chuckle.  It fills the tiny room from wall to wall, swallowing the silence whole.  It’s Smith who finally says, “Very good,” and Matt starts to feel a little lighter.  “Please, carry on with the brief.”
He follows the order and does so with his nose down, reviewing his outline of growing tensions across the world with the kind of strict professionalism his pops would be proud of.  There are no further questions from the room and each man takes notes as he sees fit.  They’re back to knowing everything about everything.
The gentleman from the Navy leaves first, somewhere amidst Matt’s coverage of Poland’s systemic food failures for the lower and middle class. Then, the officer from the Air Force checks his watch and takes a leave of his own.  Matt pays them no mind, knowing full well that he spends his busy days with even busier men and that none of it is to be taken personally.  They peel off one by one until he’s speaking to a room of two.
And by the way Smith looks at him, Matt reckons he ain’t doing much listening anyway.
He closes his folder and stands up straight again, presenting to a room that has stopped caring about what he has to say.  “Well, it looks like my time might be up,” he says.  “My direct line is listed in the report, should you have any questions.”
Smith is still smiling, a restful sort of glee in his eye, as though he’s Dr. Abraham Erskine and he’s just found his Steve Rogers.  His pen dances between his fingers—one, two, flip; one, two, flip—until it finally lands at the tip of his upper lip.  “That was very thorough, Mr. Morgan, thank you.”
Matt stands just a little taller.  “Thank you, sir,” he says.  “To tell you the truth, they don’t usually let me get that far.”
At this, Cooper huffs out a laugh, then turns toward Smith.  “You know how it is ‘round here,” he says.  “All these military men don’t know how to show up on time, but as soon as it’s time to leave, they’re suddenly bound by their watches.”
Smith nods, as though he knows all too well.  “I do remember those days,” he says.  Then, with a sly glance toward Cooper.  “And if I’m remembering correctly, Samuel, you were one of the worst offenders.”
Cooper waves his hand, stands from his chair.  “That don’t seem like the sorta thing we need to linger on.”
And Smith stands to join him, his copy of Matt’s report tucked under his elbow.  “Of course not,” he says, ever so graciously.  “Why linger on the truth?”
Matt feels as though he’s intruding, listening in on this conversation in the same way he might eavesdrop on a Russian poker game.  He’s gotten very good at hearing the undertones of a conversation, and there is an intimacy between the two of them that extends beyond colleagues.  If he had to name it, he’d say Smith reminds him a lot of Monty.
“Morgan,” Cooper says, changing the subject.  He reaches a hand out to Matt’s shoulder and guides him in close.  “This here is Alexander Smith.  He and I used to work SIGINT together.”
Smith holds out his hand, and Matt takes it with a firm shake.  “Used to, sir?”
“I’ve left my Army days behind me,” Smith says.  “If this were a proper introduction, it might include my current title: Director of Operations.”
“Oh?”
“For the CIA.”
“Oh.”
Matt’s met plenty of high ranking officials in his time.  Five-star generals and naval admirals.  Senators and ambassadors.  Hay Spring High’s class of ‘77 prom queen.  There’s not much left to intimidate him anymore, but something about those three little letters sparks an uneasy curiosity.
Smith has known Matt for all of ten minutes, and already he seems to have a perfect read on him.  “That was a pretty bold move, claiming your Polish translation like that,” he says.  “That kind of thing doesn’t usually fly around here—they’re real sticklers for procedure.  Rules, and the like.”
Matt does shrug this time, despite all of his military training against it.  “Well, sir, I never saw much good in lying after you’ve already been caught.”
This earns Matt an even wider smile than before.  “No, definitely not.” Smith leans in closer, his next words spoken in a low, conspiratorial tone.  “It only makes your next lie that much harder to tell.”
The sentiment of the statement sends a shock down Matt’s spine.  It aligns exactly with his impression of the CIA, yet it still catches him off guard.  Some part of him had always believed that the stories weren’t quite true.  He had thought that they were exaggerated—by the press, by the public, or maybe even by the agents themselves.  But Smith’s words give Matt a glimpse into a world that lives up to all of its legends and Matt realizes that the most disorienting thing about the CIA is that they’re exactly who they say they are, despite having every reason not to be.
Cooper’s voice is a comfort in a strange moment, which is not something Matt ever thought he would say about Cooper’s voice.  “I asked Alex to come meet you,” he said.  “Might be worth getting to know each other.”
It’s another one of those undertones.  He’s picking up on unsaid words and translating them before he can even register the process.  This ain’t an introduction, so much as it’s an invitation and for reasons he might never know, Don’t Stop Me Now is stuck on a loop in his head.
Smith crosses his arms across his chest and gives Matt one final look over.  “How about I buy you dinner tonight?” he says.  It’s phrased like a question, but Matt knows better.  “You and I can have a conversation about how you want to serve this country.”
It's starting to seem like Matt is destined to have this same conversation with different men every couple of years.  And while he’s honored to be asked, it all strikes him as more trouble than it’s worth.  He’s only just started to feel confident with where he’s at.
But his stomach grumbles, because the truth of the matter is that even the Peanut M&Ms don’t make for much of a meal.  Whatever the Director has in mind, it’s probably better than the grilled chicken waiting for him in the back of his fridge.  “I’ll be working late tonight,” Matt says.  “We just got the latest transcripts in from the Kiev carrier and—”
“I’ll wait,” Smith says, without so much as a flinch.  He pulls a small white card out of his pocket and holds it out.  “I’ve got nowhere else to be except right here, talking to you.  You just call me when you’re done for the night and I’ll send a car.”
It seems counterintuitive for the Director of Operations of the Central Intelligence Agency to have a business card, but it’s all right there, written out across cardstock just above his name and phone number.   Matt runs the edges across the pads of his fingers.  He runs his thumb over the seal.
By the time he looks back up, Smith and Cooper are already gone, and Matt is finally down to a room with no one else in it.

Maybank ; Rafe Cameron (Part 2)
Part #2
Read part #1 here
masterlist
Pairing: Rafe Cameron x reader
Summary: Sometimes both sides are in the wrong.
Warnings: More angst, mentions of substance, gaslighting!
A/N: you know the drill. . . send requests!
(Y/N) isn’t one to feel jealous easily.
When she dated a certain boy from her school a few years ago, she wasn’t even phased when she had found him kissing another girl at a party.
She simply didn’t care.
But the aching feeling in her when she saw her current boyfriend sniffing a line on the back of a random girl with the perfect house and the perfect clothes and the-
“(Y/N), do you want to come down to the beach with us?”
(Y/N) finally looks up from her novel in which she wasn’t even reading in the first place. Her mind was somewhere else, and her thoughts weren’t put in the context of the book.
“No. I’m not feeling well.”
JJ sighs, fixing his cap backwards and placing himself beside her. He looks over her lap, reading the first few lines of the book his sister’s reading and sighs.
“I never read, so I do not understand how this whole novel thing works. But I’m pretty sure reading about getting over a breakup won’t do you any good.”
(Y/N) rolls her eyes, snapping her book with a shut. The last thing she ever wants is for JJ to lecture her. She had enough bawling her eyes the past 2 weeks.
“What time are you supposed to go again? Go.”
She’s grateful, of course, for JJ. He was there for her the whole 2 weeks when she didn’t feel like eating or taking a shower or anything that involved getting out of the bed.
But she feels better now, her hair perfectly up in a hairdo and the red color of her cheeks returning.
She’s not sad anymore.
The feeling evolves into anger.
Of course, (Y/N).
You’re nothing but a pogue.
If there’s one thing Obx is famous for, that will be the annual bonfire. It’s an excuse for every teenager on the island to let loose and to free themselves after a year of studying.
For (Y/N), it’s just another party for Rafe to ignore her.
But she’s not coming down to the beach with him a few distance away, hell, she doesn’t even know if he’s coming.
“What the fuck! You told me you’re not coming,” JJ laughs, giving his sister a side hug. “You look good. You don’t look pale anymore.”
“I’m gonna be sick if you keep saying nice things to me,” (Y/N) rolls her eyes, though her insides are beaming. JJ has always been her number one supporter, and she loves her brother with all her heart.
“Just don’t go to the other side of the beach, okay? All your friends are here.”
And we’re back to him protecting her.
She gets it, really, but she doesn’t feel like a night full of JJ and his friends becoming some sort of bodyguards to her.
The last thing she ever wants is for Rafe to think she’s still weak.
“J, I know.”
He holds both of his hands up, “I’m just saying. I’m by the fire if you ever need me, okay?”
It’s funny how the boy who cried to her over his scraped knee is the same boy who’s trying his best to protect her. Growing up in a dysfunctional family, all (Y/N) and JJ has is each other.
(Y/N) walks to the music booth, getting so tired over the same artist being played over and over again. She doesn’t feel like listening to Drake all while trying to forget a certain brunette boy from the back of her head.
“Hey, can I get something different? Play the Euphoria soundtrack if you must. Anything other than the songs you’re playing.”
The DJ looks up to her and gives out the widest grin. (Y/N) tries to look away from the charming smile, but her eyes are glued to a pair of blue ones.
“Not a fan of Drake?”
“Nah.”
“Why? Trying to move on from an ex?”
She gulps, “No. Just have a good taste in music.”
The guy licks his teeth, “Touche. The name’s Nate.”
(Y/N) gives him a small grin, “Hm. Can we change the song now?”
Nate raises a brow because god; no one has ever disregard him.
There’s something about the girl.
“Is Party In The USA good enough for you, princess?”
Her breath hitches. The last time someone has ever called her princess was probably a few weeks ago.
This is not helping her to get over him.
“Whatever. You’re the DJ, right?” she answers, turning on her heels. “Oh wait, Nate?”
He smiles at her again, and (Y/N) has the urge to slap the smug look off his face.
“Don’t call me princess. You’re not my boyfriend.”
For the past 40 minutes, no Drake song has been playing. The crowd begins filling the empty space in the middle to dance with each other, and (Y/N) has to look away from the couple getting close and leaving kisses down each other’s necks.
She makes her way down to the drinks counter to get herself a beer because she really doesn’t feel like watching another friend of hers kissing their partners while sober. She decides that if she has to stay for another hour of people making out with each other, it’s better if she’s intoxicated.
“Hey.”
(Y/N) turns her back, expecting to see a drunk friend of hers, but the sight of the same DJ from before greets her.
She rolls her eyes, “I’m not asking you to change the music.”
“I know, I guess I started off wrong just now. Let me reintroduce myself. You deserve to know the real me.”
(Y/N) laughs, because this whole thing sounds like something out of a corny Netflix movie. He’s cute, sure, but she’s just not interested.
He removes the beanie he’s been wearing all night, revealing a blonde buzz cut underneath. (Y/N) tries not to stare.
Okay. Screw cute. He’s handsome.
“Hi, I’m Nate. I’m from New York, and I just moved here.”
She smiles, finally, because he fits the exact image she has of every male teenager in New York. Blonde buzz cut, an unbuttoned blue shirt with a peak of his toned body underneath, and a pair of red shorts.
A new kook.
“Nate, your kind and I don’t match. You’re a kook.”
He scrunches his face, “They’ve been telling me that shit since the first week I’ve been here-” he steps closer, and (Y/N) can smell his expensive cologne. It’s not the same one she favors on Rafe, but it’s close. “-don’t tell me you believe that stuff.”
Oh.
She grins, “I’m not rich, Nate.”
“So?”
Oh.
“The name’s (Y/N),” she smiles, extending her hand. Nate beams, because finally, after a whole night of watching her from his booth, she finally expresses the most beautiful smile there is.
“(Y/N), I feel like we’re going to get closer soon.”
“Yeah? Why’s that?”
“I’m not a Drake’s fan either.”
. . .
(Y/N)’s hesitant.
She doesn’t believe him in one bit, not even when he flashes her the most charming smile ever.
But he’s not afraid to show her off. She went on a date with him a few nights ago, and she distanced herself from him upon the entrance of the restaurant.
“What the fuck are you doing? C’mere.”
(Y/N) looked up to him, “You don’t have to stay near with me.”
Nate turned to her with a confused expression. “Why? I’m buying you dinner, remember?”
He held her hands in his, and she let him.
Nate pokes her side and suppresses a giggle when she yelps from the sudden touch. He fails, however, when she falls from his bed onto the floor.
“You’re too ticklish,” he says and helps her up to her feet. Her eyes wander to the band posters on his wall again, being so amazed and surprised by this boy’s taste in music and movies.
“I don’t even listen to half of the bands you listen to,” she says finally, pulling herself down to the empty space beside him. “Do you know who’s Ariana Grande?”
Nate rolls his eyes, “Ha-ha. No. I don’t. Is she the one who sang Despacito or something?”
(Y/N) laughs and her heart suddenly soars. She feels at ease, and there’s lightness in the air, even when they’re in public.
(Y/N) stands up, taking the full room into view again, and walks to the shelf full of pictures of Nate and his family. There’s a picture of him in a soccer jersey, a picture of him playing the drums and then an electric guitar, and-
“Oh my god, is this your girlfriend?” (Y/N) exclaims, picking up a photo frame with a beautiful brunette girl smiling back at her. “She’s so pretty.”
“(Y/N), put it back,” Nate rolls his eyes, standing up from the comfort of his bed and walking towards her. (Y/N) laughs, liking the way his eyebrows scrunch in distress and hides the photo frame behind her.
“(Y/N). . . I’m not playing.”
“No one is playing, Nate,” she laughs, taking a few steps back as he motions forward. “I can’t believe you have a sweetheart back in NYC, Nate.”
“(Y/N), put it back.”
(Y/N) pulls a confused expression, “Put what back?” she brings the frame forward, and expressed a fake sigh. “Oh, this? I was just checking this out-” Nate charges for her and she squeals, running towards the end of his room and watching as he runs in her direction. She panics, looking around for a place to hide, and as her eyes meet his bed, Nate has the same idea in his head.
He pushes her over his bed so she topples over, the frame still in her hands. She yelps, leaving the frame alone and using both of her hands to push his chest away.
Nate hovers over her, being so close he can smell her sweet scent now, and she looks so good under his yellow lights and in his bed and that goddamn smirk on her face-
“Is she your girlfriend, Nate?”
“None of your concern, princess,” he answers. Her eyes snap down to the cross dangling from his neck, and he can’t do this anymore; not when she looks so pretty under his gaze.
(Y/N) can feel the sudden change in the air now, and the chasing game they’ve been playing suddenly doesn’t look like a chasing game.
He’s like a predator waiting to attack.
(Y/N)’s eyes look up to him again. “Is she your girlfriend?”
And he connects his lips with her. She gasps from the sudden touch, but after a few seconds, he can feel her kissing him back.
And for once, she feels okay again. She wraps her arms around him, pulling him close to her and letting his warmth engulfing her.
She feels at peace.
“Rafe,” she whispers, letting the blonde boy trails down to her neck.
Nate pulls away, his lips sore and red after their brief makeout session.
Chest heaving, he steps away. “Rafe?”
(Y/N) sits up, groaning and fixing her hair. “God, I’m so stupid. I don’t mean that, Nate, I’m sorry. Please, don’t go.”
Nate pulls a disgusted face, and it’s the same look Rafe had put in the party a few weeks ago to her and she can feel herself losing again.
“I’m going out. You can stay here if you want.”
“Nate-”
The door closes behind him, and (Y/N) groans.
Way to go, (Y/N).
. . .
She hates how bad she feels for Nate.
He has been nothing but a total sweetheart to her, and there she was; moaning another guy’s name and letting him walked out of his own home.
So that’s the core reason as to why she’s standing outside of his house at 10 p.m. on a Friday, letting the heavy rain soaks her whole outfit because of course she would forget to bring an umbrella.
She knocks again, with her fists this time, because she’s certain he hadn’t heard her. For a moment, she’s afraid his father or mother would open the door but after remembering how they’re going to be away for a business trip, she sighs in relief.
The door opens midway of her banging on the door, revealing a shirtless Nate with nothing but green sweatpants complimenting his legs.
“(Y/N)? What are you doing here?” he groans, tugging her arms in and closing the door after her. (Y/N) attacks him in a tight hug, slightly shivering from the cold rain outside, and after a few seconds, Nate hugs her back.
“You’re okay?”
“Can we talk in your room?”
“Uh, I don’t-”
(Y/N) doesn’t let him give any excuse and she pulls him into the living room, but before she can reach the space, he pulls her to a halt.
“Hey, we can’t go there, I’m kinda, um, doing something. What’s wrong?”
She sighs, “Nate, I’m so sorry, okay? I didn’t mean it when I called you someone else’s name and that’s the stupidest thing I ever did but please don’t go, okay? You’re all I have.”
Nate laughs, “God, you’re really worried about that? I get it, it’s okay.”
“No, it’s not.”
“It is, really. But tell me one thing, though-” he pulls her arms, and pins her against the wall. (Y/N) smiles, staring into his blue orbs. “Is this Rafe more handsome than me?”
“Hey man, we really can’t wait-” a voice starts from the direction of the living room, and before (Y/N) can move away, the voice rings again. “Ah. Of course.”
Oh my god.
She misses him too much. His hair is messier than ever, his eyes bloodshot and his nose red. (Y/N) wonders how many lines he did, but judging from the distant look in his eyes, she’s guessing a lot.
“Rafe,” she whispers, getting closer to the boy she missed and letting his smell engulf her.
“Rafe?” Nate quirks a brow because this isn’t making any sense. Why would she called his friend the name-
Of course.
Rafael is Rafe.
So this is the guy.
His childhood friend is ‘the Rafe’ of the girl he’s starting to fall for.
After so many hours of trying to find the Rafe she accidentally called him, he hadn’t thought of his own childhood friend to be the guy all along.
Growing up, he have been told to call him Rafael up until the day he moved to New York.
He can’t believe it.
“Rafe,” she calls again, this time following Rafe out to the living room. “Rafe, listen to me.”
“You moved on too fast.”
“I haven’t moved on, Rafe, fuck, I swear I haven’t,” she expresses. “Please. Listen to me.”
“You were mad at me for doing a line from some bitch’s back and you’re, you’re o-out here, under my own fucking friend’s arms and- did y’all fucked?”
“What?” she gasps, “God, Rafe, no. No. I will never fuck anyone other than you.”
“Yeah?” Rafe raises a brow and lets out a shrill laugh. “God, I don’t even know if I can trust you.”
“You can, Rafe,” she steps forward, trying to reach his face with her cold fingers. The anger she felt before suddenly dissipates into the thin air because god, she did not realize how much she has been missing this boy more than anything in the world.
Her everything.
Rafe flinches away, “Stop. Do you know how miserable I am the past few weeks without you?”
“Don’t turn this on me now, Rafe.” “And you’re out here with fucking Nate Hamilton. Jesus fucking Christ.”
“Rafe, it’s not like that,” Nate suddenly steps in, and (Y/N) gives him a warning look not to say anything more. He ignores her, “Are we not going to talk about how you disregard her just because of her status on this fucking island?”
“God, always with your equality shit,” Rafe groans. “You guys deserve each other. I can’t believe you will ever do this to me, Nate.”
What hurt Rafe more isn’t the fact that she was all pinned under his arms, but it was because Nate knew about their relationship. Rafe had told him everything about her ever since they first started dating, and he hadn’t just lost her tonight.
He lost his childhood friend too.
“I’m leaving,” he says, rubbing his nose and sniffing. Rafe isn’t sure how many lines he has done, but his mind is getting lighter and lighter and the lights are turning blurry.
He can’t stand being in the same room as them. He will fucking drive if he has to.
(Y/N) bites her lips, trying to stop herself from bursting into tears. So they know each other? Why won’t Rafe ever tell her about him? Is this still her fault? She wasn’t even cheating on him. They’re not together.
Right?
Are they together?
“Hey, you’re okay?”
(Y/N) pulls her hands away, stepping away from the blonde boy and walking towards the exit. She has to leave this house as soon as possible. The once comforting bright color of the wall seems so dull and suffocating now, and she longs for the familiar blue paint of Rafe’s room.
She wants Rafe.
No one else.
Just him.
“Just me?” Rafe smiled. “Hey, hey, I got a surprise for you.”
“Rafe, I hate surprises,” (Y/N) groaned, throwing her head back against the headrest. “You bought me a dress before!”
“Look-” he smiled, showing her a gold ring in a small velvet box. “It’s a ring.”
“Oh my god, it looks like yours!” (Y/N) exclaimed, clutching his hand with the ring and comparing the color.
“Of course it’s the same ring. You’re my wife, I’m not going to buy you a different kind.”
“Wife?”
“What? Am I not your husband?”
(Y/N) wishes for nothing but Rafe.
She presses on his contact again, turning her phone downside and moving the speaker nearer to her lips.
“Rafe, please call me back. I miss you, and we can fix this, okay? I didn’t know about Nate and I was so, so stupid. I can never replace you, Rafe. You’re mine, remember? Please. Call me back. I miss you.”
She sighs, setting her phone down on her lap and watches as the rain patters down her front windscreen heavily.
Love is a hell of a drug.

=====================================
I wouldn’t call myself a Pogue or a Kook, I’m just Y/n. I grew up here in Outer Banks in the middle of The Cut and Figure Eight. I guess I never really fit in either group because no one really took interest in having me around. That was until I met Rafe Cameron…
I met Rafe at a kegger one night a little over eight months ago since everyone was celebrating school being out. Truthfully, I had always known who Rafe was, but I was too afraid to ever talk to him because he was among the popular crowd who weren’t all that fond of me. You see, I’m not like every other blonde girl that lives here, I’m not what society considers the standard beauty.
Rafe however made me see my worth, he treated me like I walked on water. Not to mention he was completely obsessed with my body and just me in general. I had never felt the things I feel being with Rafe.
=====================================
Rafe was having a house party tonight and begged me to go so he wouldn’t have to listen to his friends all night. I couldn’t deny his puppy dog pout that got me every time he wanted something.
“Please, please baby come! I don’t want to be by myself.” he whined through the phone, the camera right up to his pouting lips as he FaceTimed me.
“Rafe, you have your friends and your sister, why do I need to go?” I complained, truthfully not wanting to go.
“Because I want you to,” he scoffed, as if I had just asked the stupidest question.
“What’s in it for me?” I asked, smirking slightly.
“Whatever you want baby I swear!” Rafe grinned, knowing he was getting his way.
“Hmmm...maybe we could Netflix and chill after the stupid thing-” I suggested.
“Deal,” he said with no hesitation.
“You didn’t let me finish handsome,” I chuckled, smirking evilly at the camera.
“Oh my god if I have to watch Harry Potter again baby I swear-” he said as he glared at me.
“You know you love it, don’t even try to deny it.” I giggled, shaking my head as his cheeks flushed.
“So you’ll come then?” Rafe sighed, smiling his real genuine smile that made my heart melt.
“Yes baby,” I said softly, giggling more when he cheered loudly.
“I’ll be over soon sweetheart so don’t start getting ready yet!” He grinned, jumping into his truck.
“Why?” I asked, curious to his oddly specific request.
“I want to help you get ready,” he smirked.
“Oh yeah, I’m sure you’ll be real help Rafey.” I nodded sarcastically.
=====================================
After Rafe came over, we headed back to his house where the party was already in full swing. Kooks crowded every corner of the Cameron house which made you shrink back into Rafe a little more. Since the two of you started dating, people knew better than to even look at me the wrong way.
Still, I couldn’t help but to flinch anytime one of them came near me. Rafe took me to the sitting room where some of his friends and their girlfriends were. I sat with Sarah who I found I was the most comfortable being around in the whole room aside from Rafe. We had become quite close within these months, so I immediately planted myself beside her.
“Hey girlie! I’m so happy you came tonight, I thought I was going to be alone with all of these boys and their bimbos.” Sarah smiles, hugging me as I sat down.
“I’m hoping not to be here long, I hate parties.” I mumbled, scooting closer to her as more people tried to squeeze on the couch to get a line of blow from the stash sitting on the table.
Rafe had calmed down tremendously since with the drugs since meeting me, he admitted once that he wanted to be 100% into our relationship with nothing coming between us. I smiled thinking of the memory, but was quickly ripped away by a very loud voice.
“Hey Kooks!” Bri shouted, making me sink back into the couch more.
Bri is Rafe’s ex, she was absolutely gorgeous. I didn’t know their backstory, never really cared to bring it up either. Their past obviously bothered him still as he would almost flinch every time he heard her or saw her.
Rafe got up from his seat before she could sit beside him, rushing over to where Sarah and I were. I smirked as he came closer, biting down on my lip as he towered over me.
“Miss me already bubs?” I teased, smiling up at him.
“I’m going to get a drink my love, I was coming to see if you wanted one.” he chuckled, leaning down and kissing my lips sweetly. Sarah left after that immediately, claiming we were ‘gross’.
“I’m probably going to head up for a shower, I’m partied out.” I admitted, standing up from the couch.
“Oh, um ok...I’ll see you in a little bit then.” he said, but it sounded like more of a question than a statement.
“Yes baby, I’ll just be in your room.” I giggled, getting on my tipey toes and kissing him again.
=====================================
Rafe had a huge shower, and I used every opportunity to use it not only because it was aesthetically pleasing, but because it felt nice compared to the tiny shower I share with my whole family. I was lost in thought until I saw a familiar blonde head through the glass of the shower door.
“Hey, are we ok?” Rafe asked hesitantly, an almost scared look in his eyes.
“Yeah...why wouldn’t we be?” I asked, confused where that came from.
“Well because um...Bri was here.” he said, looking down at his feet as if he were guilty.
“I saw her Rafey,” I chuckled.
“And I-we...we ya know, used to have a thing.” he said cautiously.
“You told me love,” I said, still confused where he was going with this.
“She still hangs out with our friends and I um-I just don’t want you to be mad at me.” he whispered.
“Baby I have no reason to be mad at you.” I spoke softly, stopping what I was doing to walk a little closer to the door.
“So we’re good? Everything is good?” he asked, pouting slightly which melted my heart.
“Yes everything is ok honey,” I reassured with a smile.
“S-So I can come in?” He asked.
“Of course you can, it’s your shower.” I giggled, watching him strip from behind the fogged glass.
Once he stepped inside and under the water with me, his shoulders relaxed immediately. I reached my hands up and massaged them lightly, feeling the tense knots under his tanned skin. His arms went around me, pulling me as close as possible.
“She broke my heart,” he blurted, opening his eyes as the water ran down his face.
“Rafey,” I whispered, my heart breaking as I could see the hurt in his eyes.
“We were together for three years and-” he started, but stopped as his words seemed to get stuck in his throat. I ran my hands up his chest, stopping at the base of his neck and resting them there.
“Baby you don’t have to tell me if you’re not ready.” I said, softly kissing his cheek.
“No I-I want to.” Rafe nodded, leaning his forehead to mine.
“Ok, so what happened?” I questioned, trying to help him get started.
“She had been cheating on me our entire relationship.” he revealed, my eyes widening at his statement.
“I’m so sorry Rafe,” I sympathized, moving my hands to his cheeks and rubbing them lightly with my thumbs.
“I broke up with her a few months before I met you, and you...it was instant.” he recalled, shaking his head and staring at me in awe.
“What was instant?” I pressed, wondering what exactly he meant by that.
“Falling in love with you,” he confessed, smiling.
“Rafe,” I beamed, heart skyrocketing.
“You put my pieces back together baby, you’re my everything, my savior.” Rafe professed, sealing it with a sweet kiss.
“I love you Rafey,” I whispered against his lips.
“I love you forever angel,” he whispered back.

Us Versus. Them (Rafe Cameron)
Author's Notes: This was an idea that was floating around in my head for a while, so I decided to write it. Please let me know what you think if you have a moment, I'm pending writing a second chapter - and please proceed with some caution, not an ideal relationship depicted. Thank you xoxo
Warnings: CANON RAFE. OBX 2 SPOILERS. Swearing, Violence,
Requested? Nope. Requests for OBX are OPEN!
*My work is not to be transferred, copied, translated or reposted to any other sites without my permission. Please see my masterlist for all other works and warnings. Thank you! xoxo
The air on the Coastal Venture was crisp, the mist in his face was refreshing after all that time feeling cooped up on that island. He pressed the pad of his thumb to the flat of his ring and twisted it as he took one more deep breath then turned on his heel. He walked quickly down the narrow halls and to the small room where they were staying, tossing a quick glare at the room his sister was currently sleeping in.
"Hey. You up?" He grumbled as he opened their door and walked into their small cabin. He looked at the woman just sitting in up in bed, her hands pushing through her hair.
"Yeah. Just woke up." She whispered as she pressed up on her knees and crawled to the edge of the bed. She pushed some hair out of his eyes then ran her fingertips over his cheekbones.
"I'm going to go check on the Cross. I feel anxious. Get dressed. She'll be awake soon." Rafe muttered as he pressed his right hand to the small of her back, bringing her close as he kissed the side of her face.
"I'll come with you." She replied quickly getting out of bed and grabbing her discarded jeans from the floor, pulling them up her legs. She grabbed her dark jacket from the back of a nearby chair and followed him out of the room to see the treasure.
Down, down they went. Below all the hustle of the busy workers above. Rafe reached for her hand as he reached the level the Cross rested on. He helped her down the metal steps, then led her towards the box. He crouched down beside the box and lifted the top gently, sliding it away to reveal the golden Cross.
"There She is." Rafe mumbled as he pulled the blankets wrapping the Cross up for safety to show his girl their treasure.
"It's beautiful. Might be the most beautiful thing on this ship." She smiled as she crouched down beside him, her fingertips running over the delicate jewels encrusting the Cross.
"Second." Rafe replied as his eyes quickly looked over at her, then down at the Cross before he covered it back up. He looked over at her again, thankful for every sacrifice she had made to help him get to that point.
"Thank you. I couldn't have done this without you. When this is over, I'm going to make you a Cameron. A real one." Rafe smiled as he reached out to place his palm gently on her cheek.
She smiled over at him, her blush warming his hand as she leaned over to kiss his lips. Rafe sighed contently through his nostrils and thumbed at her cheekbone. It felt like he had not been able to simply be with his girlfriend in so long.
"C'mon. We should get back upstairs." Rafe mumbled, his forehead pressed to hers. He stood up once more, taking her hand and pulling her upright to lead her back up the stairs where his family was waiting for them.
The door to the State Room was closed and locked, the way his father had intended. Rafe pulled out his key, smoothed his fingers over the teeth and gently placed it into the knob. As he unlocked the door and opened it slowly his sister came running from her spot from the cracked leather seat by the window, laying a firm punch to his broad chest.
"You knew! You helped him, and you knew! Fuck you, Rafe!" Sarah screamed as she punched his chest, one right after the other. Rafe stood in place, his eyes out the window at the passing ocean as he took each meager punch from his little sister.
"He asked me for my help." Rafe glared as he grabbed her wrists and pushed them towards her own chest.
"You're insane. The both of you. You and dad, you've lost your minds." Sarah cried as she ran her shaky fingers through her hair.
"We're aligned on a common goal, Sarah. And maybe...just fucking maybe if you weren't so wrapped up in your Pogue shit you would understand that. This? All of this is for our family." Rafe growled his eyes narrowed at his sister as his hands gestured to his heart. His family. His heart.
"And her?" Sarah asked with a deep inhale as she looked from her brother's feverish eyes to the girl standing behind him, arms over her chest.
"Her? She's my family." Rafe grinned with a raised eyebrow. He looked behind him to his girl who looked his sister up then down, her lips pursed.
"Elise. Heard a lot about you, Sarah Cameron." The girl behind Rafe stated, taking a step forward to stand beside him.
"Wish I could say the same." Sarah glared as she sat back down, her legs feeling like they may give out beneath her any second.
"You're right, baby. She's not very nice." Elise mumbled as she looked up at Rafe.
Rafe breathed out a laugh as he leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead. He gave her backside a soft pat as he looked down into her eyes.
"Go check with the Captain, see how far away we are. I'll be right up. Take your knife with you, too." Rafe muttered as he pressed a quick kiss to her lips, pulling her switchblade out of her back pocket to press it to the palm of her hand.
She nodded with a soft smile, happy he was always looking out for her even though she could handle herself. She turned on her heel, tossing Sarah Cameron a wink before she shut the door behind her and walked quickly down the halls towards the Captains deck. She clicked the latch of her switchblade, opening it, and dragged it along the old walls of the boat leaving an indent.
"What's the timeline?" She asked as she walked up to the top of the boat with the Captain, who flinched upon sight of the small woman. Something she never tired of seeing.
"Few hours, I think. As long as the weather holds." The Captain nodded, his eyes fixed forward and away from the girl that wielded the small switchblade at her side, the tip of the blade pressed into her thigh.
"Good. Make it happen." She replied as she turned to exit the small room, only to run into the strong chest of a man she didn't know. He smelled of dirt, sweat and ocean water.
"Arms length. You know the rules." She spat as she pressed the tip of her blade into the chest of the person who dared come close to her.
"Sorry." He mumbled, his head low and face covered by a mess of curls as he tried to hurry passed her below deck.
"Wait. You aren't part of the crew, are you?" Elise asked, knife extended towards the boy. He looked up at her, pushing his hair out of his eyes and her heart began to race as she recognized him.
Routledge.
"Summer program." John B stuttered as he backed down the steps from the top level of the boat, eyes darting around for something to use as a weapon to evade the girl.
"Get the fuck back here, Routledge! How did you get on this boat!" Elise cried as she took off with a sprint after him, scrambling down the steps.
"Oh, my God. She's fucking fast." John B mumbled as he hopped over tipped over barrels and scattered coils of rope to get to his destination.
A door on the opposite side of the ship that led to a hallway, where he was certain Sarah was being kept in one of the many rooms. He just had to find that room. He tripped over a coil of rope, but caught himself on the frame of a door, jiggling the handle to let himself in. He let out a heavy breath as he slammed the door behind him and ran through the narrow halls, screaming her name.
"Sarah!" He slammed his fist on each door his passed in the hopes her beautiful face, and that long golden hair would pop out.
She never did.
So John B kept running. He kept running and he kept yelling in the hopes that she would hear him. But the small girl with the knife wasn't far behind him.
"Rafe!" Elise yelled as she ran through the hallways, John B evading her quickly as he made a quick left turn.
Rafe perked up at the sound of his name, but his heart began to race as the tone of her voice. It didn't sound good. He had simply sent her off to get an arrival window so they could get off this boat and safely house the Cross. He clenched his fist as he stood up from his spot in an old chair in the State Room and walked quickly to the door, tossing a glare back at his sister.
"Stay here." Rafe growled at Sarah as he unlocked the door and stalked out to the hallway, locking the door behind him once more.
Rafe spotted his love in the hallway looking frantic, and that wasn't a headspace she was usually in. She was calm, collected. She was his rock most of the time and he didn't like the look on her face as he checked the lock behind him.
"Pogues are here."

BIG MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
People screamed, cheering on. Smirks decorated their faces while their eyes followed the waves of the sea and the people riding the waves as if they were controlling them. Plastic bags were everywhere, hoping that people would throw their trash there, avoiding more sea pollution while they enjoyed the tournament.
A cold object against the back of your neck made you jump, a tiny screech coming out from in between your lips. "JJ, you scared the shit out of me." The blond boy smiled, sitting down on the sand, next to you. His fingers gripped a cold water bottle, extending his arm and offering it to you.
"The sea it's going to be colder today." He brushed his hands together, trying to get rid of the sand as he wanted to take off his shirt. You tried not to make it obvious that you were glancing at his body. "Nervous?" He grabbed your bag, pulling his shirt inside.
Swallowing two big gulps of freezing water, you nodded. "Yeah," You gave him back the bottle, which he gratefully grabbed, taking some sips. "It's been so long."
A couple of months ago, you had arrived at the Outer Banks with your big brother and his soon-to-be wife. Sadly, your parents passed away when you were younger, but you were lucky to have someone like Scott, your big brother. Emily, your sister-in-law, was also marvellous.
Back where you used to live, surfing was what kept you from wanting to give up. The heat of the day against the cold water, both fighting to change the temperature in your body. The sound of the calming waves, elegantly getting bigger and louder. The way your fingers grazed the water, helping to get you deeper into the sea.
However, two years before you had an accident.
The day you arrived at the Outer Banks, you spent the night wandering along the seashore. For you, the sound of the waves at night was magical. You were completely sure it had healing properties. The calm of the night was interrupted by a storm. A storm rounded by pretty girls, trying to flirt with him. A storm with blue eyes and blonde hair.
Without noticing, you got closer to the storm, which is something no one in their right minds would do. His name was JJ Maybank, and he was telling the story of how a shark had bitten him. You snickered, and he noticed, asking what was so funny about something that almost got him killed.
JJ Maybank didn't expect seeing you rolling your pants up, showing a real shark bite. For him, it was cool and badass. He immediately wanted to get to know you. He was even more mesmerized when he knew you were new to OBX. He wouldn't have forgotten your face so easily if you were from there.
For you, it was terrifying. It made you fear what you loved the most. The sea. It also meant that you weren't able to get into the sea. The physical and emotional pain being too much to withstand.
Now, exactly 11 months after arriving at the Outer Banks, you were ready to participate in your first Surfing tournament after what happened. You had to thanks JJ, who walked beside you, helping you get over your aversion towards the sea.
"Where are the others?" You asked, fingers slightly grazing your surfboard.
"They went to buy some food and drinks." He closed his eyes for a moment, letting the breeze caress his hair. He completely ignored the people screaming, and the ones that were participating in the tournament. "Told them to buy you something for when you come out of the water."
You hummed. Your heart started beating wildly when some of the participants came out of the water, meaning that the next ones would have to start getting ready. It was your turn.
"We are here!" Kiara's mouth was full of french fries, hands tightly holding a brown paper bag, offering it to the blond sitting next to you. The others were back too, sitting behind you two, knowing that your anxiety was kicking, and knowing that JJ was the only one capable of soothing you.
"Please, from number 5430 to number 5440. Get ready." The voice sounded all around the beach, making you gasp, trying to breathe.
"Okay," JJ moved, now looking directly at you. His hands grasped your thighs, moving you, so you were staring at him. "Did you warm up?" You nodded. "Did you put suncream?" Nod. His hands went down to your ankles, fingers rubbing circles, massaging them. "Any pain?" This time you shook your head. "Alright. Did you have a good breakfast and long ago?" Again, you nodded.
"Please, from number 5430 to number 5440. Go to the seashore. You know how this works. Every surfer will have their judge. They will take into account the precision to ride the waves, the height of the waves, time taken by the participants to ride them, times you fall, and times you continue trying. Have fun and enjoy the waves."
Maybank got up from the sand, one hand helping you stand. His other hand grabbed the surfboard, without any trouble, placing it under his armpit. He walked with you towards the seashore.
The surfboard was stuck into the sand, he turned you around, pulling up the zipper of your neoprene suit. "You got this." He whispered. When he stood in front of you, his eyes examined yours, knowing you were anxious. He bit his lower lip. "What did the great white shark say to the surfer?" You gazed at him, confused by his words. "Don’t worry, I’ll catch you."
You gasped, not being able to hold your laugh. "JJ, stop!" You groaned, a smile still in your face. "Don't do jokes like that!"
"At least you smiled!" He grinned, kissing your forehead. "You better concentrate on how loud I'm going to cheer you up." His hands squeezed your shoulders. "I believe in you. Good luck."
When JJ went back to the others, he couldn't eat his food. His stomach was upset enough to make him bite his nails, no appetite. "Should I say it now?" Sarah voiced, glancing at John B, who nodded. "Topper is in the tournament."
The blond moved his head so fast that he almost got dizzy. "As in at the beach?"
John B shook his head, burger being left on top of a brown paper bag resting on his lap. "As in the tournament. He is participating."
"What number?" JJ asked, glaring at them.
"5433." A voice behind him sounded. When JJ turned around, he saw Rafe Cameron, a smirk decorating his stupid face. "Isn't Y/N 5434? Aw, they are going to be next to each other."
Blue eyes snapped to the blue sea. You were already sitting on your surfboard, like the other participants, waiting for a great wave to come your way. Topper was a couple of meters away from you, but still quite close, also ready to ride those waves. "I swear to god," He suddenly got up, pushing Rafe. "If Topper does anything to her I will drown you both with my own hands." His fists clenched as he saw how Rafe walked away, smiling to himself. JJ turned around, looking at his friends. "Why did no one told me about Topper before Y/N went into the water?"
"Dude," Pope decided to speak. "Even if we had told you, you can't forbid her to get into the water just because of Topper."
"I can." He was convinced. "I can if I know Topper is in there. You guys know he doesn't play fair. She doesn't need to go through any of his fucking insane jokes."
"She's going to be alright." Kie tried to calm down her friend. However, she was terrified of what Topper could do. He wasn't going to play fair. He would do anything to win, especially when money was involved.
Tumblr media
You kept calm, remembering all the things JJ had taught you. You were so thankful. Not only had he taught you to enjoy the waves again, but also to keep calm. At first, it was difficult. The fear of something big swimming under you, ready to attack, being fascinated by the smell of your blood. It terrified you more than ever.
There was no time to get lost in your thoughts as you perceived a magnificent wave coming your way. "This is it." Your chest was immediately pressed to the surfboard, arms moving faster, taking you to your destination.
You could hear people cheering back at the beach. They were cheering for you. You were riding the biggest wave of the day. Smiling to yourself, you forgot about concentrating because you were enjoying it, which was better than focusing.
However, you felt your surfboard abruptly shifting. Thankfully, you were able to maintain your balance. "Yo, get out of my wave." You snapped your head quickly, looking behind you. Then, concentrating on your balance again. Topper was so close to you. He was in YOUR wave, the front of his surfboard hitting the back of yours.
You could hear the commotion on the beach. Not only the judges had noticed that Topper was getting too close to you, breaking the rules. Not willing to follow the rules. "Stop," You screeched, your entire body tensing as you felt him hitting your board again.
Everything happened so fast, one minute you were telling Topper to get away from you, the second you were falling out of your board. The fins of Topper's board slicing your left shoulder. The sea consuming you.
Back at the shore, everyone fell silent, gasping. JJ held hands with John B, eyes wide open, dry mouth, heart beating like crazy. You weren't coming out of the water.
His hands went to grasp his hair as he saw three red boats getting father into the water, hoping to find you. "Fuck, fuck, fuck." He gasped for air. "Oh my god." He aggressively rubbed his face. "I'm going to kill them."
JJ thought he couldn't feel as worse as he felt at that moment. However, when the boats came back with you, he almost passed out. You were violently sobbing, blood covering your entire left arm. One of the lifeguards was pressing as many clothes as possible, trying to cut the blood.
The blond boy didn't think twice, running towards the boat. He was scared of touching you, terrified of hurting you. "Oh my god." He didn't dare to ask if you were okay, you clearly weren't. "I-I-."
"Hey boy, who are you?" The lifeguard asked.
"She's my girl." He nodded, eyes not leaving your wet face. "Yeah, I'm her boyfriend." The man explained to him that he had to press the clothes tightly against your shoulder as he had to run back to the tower, getting what he needed to take care of you while the ambulance was on its way.
"S-so I'm your girl now?" You continued whimpering, avoiding looking at the blood dripping down your entire arm.
"Always were." He offered a quick smile, swallowing hard. "Just making it official."
As the ambulance came and you were taken into the back, JJ held your hand tightly after telling the others to meet you two at the hospital. He sighed. "I-I thought you were going to die." He started crying, tightly holding your hand.
"You aren't getting rid of me so easily."
"I think you are too busy not trying to bleed out, but you won."
You groaned, whimpering a little due to the pain. "Did I win because of this?" You referred to the wound. JJ shook his head, letting you know that it was already decided before Topper threw you off your surfboard.
"You are bleeding out, I thought you almost died, I'm going to kill Topper and you are 100,000 dollars richer."
"50,000 dollars."
"No, the prize is-."
"I know." You turned your head to look at him. "My intention all along was to give you half of the money if I got a big prize. All if I got a small one." JJ's heart thumped painfully. "You deserve it, and you need it." He was going to complain, but you didn't let him. "Just a girl sharing her prize money with her boyfriend." You grinned.
"Well, at least it wasn't a shark this time."
"JJ!"

Warnings: Being shot at?
Chapter 1  Chapter 2  Chapter 3
Tumblr media
The Pogues come over later to hang out like usual. No one mentions last night's party. I don't know whether its because they don't want to talk about it or we're pretending like it never happened. I'm fine with either.
I sit next to Kie who taps her fingers on a bongo and bobs her head to her own beat. Pope's shuffling a deck of cards to my right and JJ sips on another beer across from me. It's hard to concentrate on what they're talking about. I'm too busy locked in my own head, thinking about what Peterkin said - foster care - what life would be like if we were taken away. Would I ever see my friends again? Would John B and I be in the same foster home? The thought of being separated makes me sick.
"Look, I'm calling it off. All right?" John B pulls me out of my thoughts. JJ rolls his eyes at my brother and glances at me. "Peterkin said if we stay out of the marsh, she'll help us with DCS."
"And you believed her?" JJ asks. "An actual cop, John B. You believed a cop."
John B sighs. "All I gotta do is stay out of the marsh for a couple days, and she'll help me out. It doesn't help that your ass was the one shooting a gun."
Here we go.
"You know what I should have done? Just let Topper drown your ass."
"Topper was gonna drown me?"
"Sure looked like it."
"Funny," John B deadpans.
"Have you looked in a mirror?"
"Tell me some more. Come on." I can tell by the look on John B's face that he's getting annoyed. It's pinched and he keeps rolling his eyes.
JJ steps closer to him. "They always win, don't they, man? Kooks versus Pogues. They always, always win!" He turns around and punches one of the small volleyballs we have tied in a string like a decoration.
"Look, it's okay!" Kie tries to calm him down.
"No, it's not okay! It's not! They don't want us to go down into the marsh." JJ comes back. "That means there's something valuable down there, and you know it." He turns to me and points. "I know you do." Then he looks at Pope. "I know you do. And I understand why you don't wanna go. You're the golden boy. You got way too much to risk. And you -" He turns to Kie. "I mean, you're already rich as fuck anyway. Why would you bother? But you and me, and Marleigh, man, we got nothing to lose! We really don't all right?"
"JJ -" I sigh.
"And I know it didn't use to be that way for you -"
John B shakes his head. "I don't want to talk about this. I don't want to talk about it!"
"So that's it?"
John B shoves past JJ. "Just get out of my way, bro."
"John B, listen to me. I have a plan." Well thats never good. "You got the key to Cameron's big boat right?"
"No," John B says, already knowing where JJ's head is at.
"There's scuba gear. We borrow that, and then we go down to the wreck this afternoon, and that is what's gonna save you, man. You don't see rich kids going into foster care, do you?"
Here's the thing about JJ. He can be really convincing, which is usually the reason he and I get into the most trouble. Because I always fall for what he's saying. He gives me hope when I don't think there is any. He can be surprisingly optimistic sometimes. And when he is, I fall for his charm and agree with everything he says. If he told me to jump off a bridge, I probably would.
When he looks at me, my lips tug upwards into a smile. This creates a domino effect, and soon the other Pogues get excited. John B looks at me, trying to look disapproving but I shrug in response. I mean, JJ's right. What do we have to lose?
                                                       ~ ~ ~
I light a match and ignite my gas stove to make myself lunch. A can of chicken noodle soup that's been in my food closet for who knows how long. John B left to grab the tanks from the Cameron's boat, so the rest of us are waiting here until he comes to pick us up.
"You're eating soup? Its like a hundred degrees outside." JJ walks into the kitchen and lifts himself up on the counter next to the stove.
I stir the liquid around with a wooden spoon and smirk. "Do you see any other edible food around here?" JJ chuckles at that. He knows better than anyone how horrible John B and I are at food shopping. "I meant to go to the store today but..." I sigh. "I've been busy."
JJ pauses, causing me to look up at him. He's usually so quick with his wit and humor. Something I admire and love about him. How he always manages to put a smile on my face with some dumb remark or a sarcastic reply. Only now he's staring at me with curiosity. "Are you okay?"
"You mean other than the impending doom that is foster care that's going to hit me and John B in the near future?" I say sarcastically. I turn the stove off and grab two bowls out of the cabinet behind JJ's head. He ducks for me and my waist presses against his thigh. I pour half the soup in each bowl and hand him one with a spoon.
"Yeah, I mean other than that," JJ says. I blow on the liquid on my spoon to cool it down. The steam that comes up from my bowl already makes me feel hot.
"I'm fine," I tell him.
He gives me a look that says he's doesn't believe me, but I ignore it and he doesn't press me on it. Truth is, I am fine. I just have a lot of my mind but I'm going to do my best not to let it ruin my summer. JJ got me excited again. He's promising an adventure and possibly a fortune. He's right. John B and I have nothing to lose. If we don't go on the marsh today, DCS will find another reason to snatch us. So why hold ourselves back?
"Mar, JJ, he's back!" Kie calls out to us from my yard.
JJ sips the last of his broth out of the bowl and I shovel in the last couple of scoops into my mouth. We throw the bowls in the sink and run to the dock where John B and the others are waiting for us.
Pope directs John B to the part of the marsh where we found the wreck. I sit next to Kie in the front of the boat. She's looking at the two tanks that John B was able to snag off the Cameron's boat. Her brows are furrowed in confusion as she studies the gear.
"This is empty," Kie says, looking up at my brother who stops the boat when we find the sunken Grady-White. "You took empty tanks?"
"I..." John B says slowly. He definitely didn't look at it before he took it.
"Okay, this one's a quarter full," Kie says, pulling the tank to her left closer to her. "Its enough for one of us."
"Love it when a plan comes together," I say sarcastically and pass a look to JJ who rolls his eyes.
"Does anybody know how to dive?" Kie asks.
I purse my lips and look around at my friends and brother. None of them speak up.
"Uh..."
"Anybody?" Kie asks.
"It's kind of a Kook sport," I say.
Pope raises his hand. "I...read about it."
"Great, Pope read about it so someone's gonna die," Kie says.
JJ walks towards us and picks up the mouth piece and shrugs his shoulders. "Look, you put the thing in your mouth and breathe. How hard could it be?"
Pope answers, "If you come up too fast, nitrogen gets into your blood, and you get the bends."
JJ glances between Pope and the rest of us. "Bends like..." JJ bends forward, purposely sticking his butt out, "bend over and..."
Pope cuts him off. "The bends kill you."
JJ snaps straight up. "Right."
I roll my eyes and stand up. "I'll do it."
"Uh, I don't think..." JJ starts to say but my brother cuts him off.
"No. I'll do it."
"What, why?" I turn to my brother and send him a glare.
"Because Pope just said it can kill you and you don't listen to instructions very well." My brother glares back at me. I roll my eyes. He does have a point and evidence to prove it. I usually follow my own gut and ignore others' directions. And because I don't want him to bring up past events, I decide not to fight him on it.
"He has a point," JJ says, earning a punch in the bicep from me. He looks at my brother. "You can dive. I'm cool with that."
"Since when can you dive?" Kie says not liking the idea any more than me.
He shrugs. "I'll do it. It's fine."
"Let me do some calculations real quick," Pope says as John B starts putting on the scuba gear.
"You serious?" JJ asks.
"That boat's about thirty feet down. Okay? So it'll take twenty five minutes at that depth. Twenty five. Which means you need to make your safety stop at about...ten feet."
Contrary to popular belief, I do the actual listening to instructions, I just don't always follow through. But I process everything Pope just said and think of a way to make this easier for John B.
I shimmy out of my jean shorts and pull my top over my head, leaving me in a purple and white striped bikini. Without saying anything, I jump into the water with my shirt.
"Uh..." Pope says, looking into the water where I just disappeared. "What was that about?"
"I don't know. But I liked it. A lot," JJ says, staring at the same spot. John B slaps the back JJ's head and glares daggers in his direction. JJ pretends to clear his throat and turns away from John B.  "Uh, so..."
Pope pretends to focus on his calculations again, not wanting to get caught by John B for staring at his sister too. "Yeah. Uh, when you uh, when you're down there, you look for the cargo hold. You stick this thing inside and twist and pull, okay?"
I guesstimate how deep ten feet is and tie my shirt around the chain attached to our anchor. I look one last time at the blurry image of the sunken boat and pull myself back up.
"Hey," I say to grab their attention. They all look at me. "I tied my T-shirt to the anchor chain about ten feet down. It's where you need to do your safety stop."
John B nods. "Cool."
I stay in the water, loving how the water feels around me like a protective blanket. I listen to Pope explain the important parts of diving. There's some kind of meter he has to pay attention to to keep track of time.
"Okay, how much do I need?" John B asks.
"Unclear," Pope answers. "Breathe as little as possible."
JJ slaps John B on the shoulder. "Zen. Think zen, you know?"
John B turns to the water, preparing to jump in next to me.  "Yeah. Got it."
"Hey," Pope says, stopping him. "If we get caught in the marsh, we're basically screwed, so better get a move on."
"No pressure or anything," I add.
"Copy that," John B says.
Kie approaches my brother and stands in front of him. She's really close to him, almost inches away from his face. Then she leans in and kisses his cheek slowly. Way more intimate than usual. My eyes widen in surprise and I look at Pope and JJ to see their reaction. They mirror mine.
"Diver down?" Kie says softly.
"Diver down." John B says just as softly.
"See ya, dude," JJ says.
John B jumps in the water and sinks down below me. I lay on my back in the water and bathe in the warmth of the sun above me. I even close my eyes, letting relaxation overcome me. I could probably sleep here if I wanted too.
"Shit, JJ," Pope curses, catching my attention.
"Guys, that's the police," Kie says.
"Oh, you gotta be kidding me," JJ says, glancing at me.
My eyes go wide with anxiety. I swim closer to the boat and look up at JJ. "JJ, they can't know I'm here. If they find me-"
"Hey, hey, hey. It's gonna be okay. They're not going to, just stay there."
I nod and press myself tighter against the boat.
"Just act freaking normal," Kie says through clenched teeth.
I can hear the sirens coming closer until I feel their boat bump against ours. I flinch against it and kick my feet faster to stay afloat. I look down at the water, but I can't see John B. My heart races at the thought of him running out of air.
"Evening," I hear one of the cops greet my friends.
"JJ, tie it off," Pope says.
"How you kids doing? You know the marsh is closed?" The officer asks them.
"No."
"No. Wow."
My friends play dumb. I look up, finding comfort in seeing JJ's long hair. I can tell he's trying hard not to look down at me.
"Why - why is it closed?" Pope asks.
"Well, we're conducting a search out here. Boat went down." The officer explains.
"Oh."
"See anything?"
"No." JJ purses his lips and shrugs.
"No boats," Kie says. "No."
There's a pause and for a split second I think he's gonna call their bluff. But he doesn't. "Where are the other two kids you always hang with? The twins? They here?"
I bite my bottom lip hard in anticipation for what's to come. He knows we're here. He has to. I can tell by how suspicious he sounds. I look back down in the water, John B still invisible to me. I don't know how much time he has left, but he's definitely running out of it.
"They both had to work," I hear Kie answer.
"Hm," The officer hums. "I'm gonna check your little boat out."
Shit, shit, shit, shit. I look around for a place to hide, but the only thing surrounding me is water. I'm going to have to go under.
"Yeah." JJ coughs, risking one last look at me before pretending to help the officer into the boat. "Yeah, hop aboard."
I push myself under the water and swim directly underneath the boat. I open my eyes, ignoring the sting of the salt water. I can see John B's silhouette by my T-shirt and the blurry light of his timer.
Thirty more seconds pass. I swing my arms upwards, pushing myself deeper into the water. The shadow of the cops' boat is still next to ours. My lungs are screaming at me for for air like they're tearing into my chest. Just like John B, I don't know how long I'm going to be able to last down here.
My body reactively gulps for air, forcing myself to swallow the salt water. It feels like a stab in my chest, my throat on fire. I've got to pop back up to the surface or I'm going to drown.
Just as I'm about to reveal myself, the shadow of the boat drives off. I push myself up, coughing up the water I swallowed and gasping for air. Less than a second later, John B pops up next to me.
"Oh, god! Jesus Christ," Kie says with her eyes closed and her head looking up.
"Don't scare us like that!" Pope says.
JJ watches me instead of John B, concern laced into his features. As I feel my heart go back to its normal pace, I smile at him and laugh the anxiety off. "You good?" He asks me. I nod and let him help me back up to the boat. "How'd it go down there?" He asks my brother. "Did you find anything?"
"Did I find anything?" John B scoffs and holds up a dark velvet bag.
"Yeah, there we go!" JJ claps his shoulders. "That's my boy!"
"Jeez, dude," Pope sighs.
"You okay?" Kie asks John B.
John B pants as he swims closer to the boat. "Yeah, I ran out of air."
"You and me both," I tell him.
John B pulls himself up. When he stands, he's met face to face with Kie who shoves him back playfully. "You scared the shit out of me."
"Yeah, the cops were up here, but, uh...we took care of 'em." Pope says, trying to act like he wasn't going to piss his pants the entire time he was talking to them.
"My bad," John B laughs.
"You're all good."
"Yeah, you kinda missed the show, brother," JJ says.
I move to the back of the boat to ring my wet hair out when something catches me eye. Its another boat, but it doesn't look like the one the cops were just using.
"Hey, guys? Guys!" I call louder to grab their attention. "Bogey, two o'clock."
"What?" JJ comes up next to me and eyes the boat that's making its way closer to us.
"Do you recognize the boat?" Pope asks.
"I've never seen it," I answer.
A bad feeling settles in the pit of my stomach. I can make out two people, I think men, standing in the front. They keep their eyes straight on us. No laughing or talking like a couple of buds would on a boat day in the marsh.
"What are they doing here? The marsh is closed," Kie says.
"Let's not stick around and find out." JJ places his hands on my bare waist and pulls me to the side so he can pull up the anchor.
"JJ get the bowline," John B says, not realizing that JJ was already on it.
"Yeah."
"Should we wait on 'em?" Pope asks.
"No. No. We should leave now. Right now," Kie says, looking directly at John B.
"Go get the stern," John B tells me. "Go!"
I kneel next to JJ and help him. Similar to how I felt in the water, my heart beats violently against my chest and my breathing becomes static. I try not to think of the fear that creeps through my veins as I help release the boat from it's hold in the marsh.
"Guys, don't wait for us! Go!" JJ yells.
"Go!" Kie says.
"Pull out the stern!" Pope yells at us.
I yank the chain hard, revealing the slimy anchor covered in seaweed and moss.
"I don't like this," I mutter to JJ between clenched teeth.
John B pulls away from the wreck. JJ looks between me and the boat that still driving in our direction. "Are they coming for us?"
"Maybe they're fishing," Pope says.
"Go, go, go, go!"
"Go into the marsh," I tell my brother, constantly glancing between him and the other boat.
"Let's go," Kie says. I can hear fear creep into her voice and her hands shake around the drivers seat she's holding with a death grip.
"I'm going. Act natural!" John B hisses and revs the engine of the boat.
He takes a left turn into the marsh. I watch anxiously for the people in the other boat to make its move.
They turn left.
"Guys, they're following us!" Kie says.
"This can't be good," Pope says.
"Dude, you gotta go faster!" JJ says.
"I'm going!" John B yells back.
"Gun it!"
I look behind the boat. They're getting closer. Too close. Can't say I'm surprised. The HMS Pogue is no match for their boat that looks more expensive than my house. However, something catches my eye. Something long the guy in the passenger seat is holding and pointing right at us.
"Is that..." I mutter before I'm cut off by exactly what I was going to say.
The gun shot rings through my ears as if the person who shot it was standing next to me. Before I can react, JJ pulls me down to the floor of our boat by my waist and covers me with his own body. I gotta say, this isn't how I pictured him being on top of me. His left arm outlines my head, keeping me face down while other bullets pass our boat. The cries of my friends are dull through the blood pounding in my ears and my heart inching its way up my throat.
"Holy shit!" Kie shouts.
"John B, get down!" JJ yells.
I try looking up at my brother but JJ's hold is strong. John B's still behind the wheel, trying his best to duck from bullets without crashing the boat.
"We're gonna die!" Pope yells.
I try looking around the boat for anything we can use against these guys. Of course JJ decides to leave the gun he stole at my house for the day, leaving us practically useless against these two strangers.
My eyes find a net pooling in front of Kie's face as she keeps her head down. I try crawling out of JJ's embrace which only makes him tighten his arms around me.
"Kie!" I shout. She looks up at me with wide eyes. "The net!"
Immediately she understands what I'm trying to tell her. She pulls herself away from Pope and army crawls to the wide net. This only makes my friends yell at her, telling her to get down, but she doesn't listen.
"Get down, Kie!" John B shouts.
Another gun shot echoes through the air, making me flinch closer into JJ.
Kie throws the net overboard towards their boat and drops back down to her knees. The sound of the other boat's engine clanging against the net gets my head to perk up and I watch Kie's reaction. She's surprisingly smiling. When she looks at me, she lets out a breathy laugh and shakes her head in disbelief because that just worked. Their boats gets stuck.
"Let's go, let's go, let's go," Pope says.
One last gun shot rings through my ears before we make our getaway.  I pull myself off the floor and look back at the boat one last time. We severely underestimated how important finding that boat was. Whatever John B found was worth killing us for.
A couple minutes later, John B pulls the boat up to the Chateau and docks it by the wooden slacks that I used as a bed last night. My friends cheer and actually smile after what just happened.
"That was insane!" Kie says.
"Whoo!"
I look at my brother with adrenaline rushing straight to me head. I feel giddy about finding out what JB found - what must be so important. "What do you think it is?"
"Gotta be money, right?" He asks, looking at me.
"That or a couple of keys with street value to the low-to-mid-mills," JJ says, leisurely danglingly his arm around my shoulders.
"Can we please just open the bag?" Pope says loudly, forcing everyone's attention at him who now looks at us sheepishly.
"Wow, Pope," John B laughs. "That's a rare outburst of emotion."
"Okay, you guys are literally killing me with anticipation," He says. "Open the bag!"
"Jeez." JJ whistles.
"We almost died over this," Pope says like its an explanation. But he's right. We did almost die for this, which is why I need to know what's in it now.
John B opens the velvet bag. Something heavier than money falls out of it with a thunk. Its round and metal. Dirty and dented. Physically ugly and maybe priceless, but it looks familiar. I narrow my eyes at it, trying to study it and rack my brain through where I've seen it before.
"Oh, wow. Yup. That's about right," Pope sighs at the sight of our treasure. "Good job, everybody. We found a compass."
The word compass hits me like a train and my body goes slack like my limbs just turned into jell-o. John B is already looking at me, shocked at the real meaning of what we just found. I push myself in front of JJ and look down at the object he's holding. Priceless maybe true to the others but not to me. Not to John B. This means everything.
JJ looks between John B and I and laughs nervously at our reactions. "Dude, what? It's not worth anything."
My brows furrow together in confusion as I try to wrap my head around how we just found our dad's possession on another man's boat. A dead man's boat. But I feel blank. Like someone just wiped all my thoughts and memories.
"This was our father's compass," I say emotionless, keeping my eyes on JB who looks equally as terrified.

series masterlist
The Boneyard was packed with Pogues, Kooks, and Tourons. It was the middle of the summer, the height of the party season in the Outer Banks, and there was no party like a kegger at the Boneyard. You and the Pogues were at the center of it all, music pounding in your chest louder than your heartbeat as you danced with Kie and Sarah. The liquid in your red solo cup spilled as you spun around, accidentally bumping into JJ, who was approaching the dance floor with a drunk grin on his face.
“Having fun?” He questioned as he gripped your waist to keep you from falling.
“Always am!” You slurred, gripping his hand and pulling him onto the dance floor with you and the girls.
At the beginning of the night, your dancing would have been sexy, grinding with Kie and Sarah, shaking your hips as you moved seductively. Now, you were a point of drunkenness where your legs no longer coordinated with your mind. You jumped and yelled along with the music, a goofy grin on your face. You wrapped your arms around JJ’s shoulders as you both screamed the chorus of the song, rocking back and forth like the waves not far from the dance floor. As the song faded out, JJ led you off the dance floor. You downed the last of your drink and giggled as you and JJ tripped over nothing in the sand. JJ collapsed on a log next to Pope and John B., both boys much more sober than the rest of their friends.
“You too better not puke in my living room,” John B commented.
“How dare you, I’m not even that drunk. In fact, I could go for another right now,” JJ said, standing from the log, swaying, and immediately falling back down on his ass. He stood up again, successfully, and grinned at you.
“Y/N, care to join me?”
“Nah, I’m gonna go for a walk. I want to feel the waves on my feet!” You giggled as you turned away from your friends and marched towards the ocean. The music slowly faded the farther you got, stumbling to an empty area several yards away from the party. As you stepped towards the water, letting the tide roll over your feet, you noticed a figure a few feet away sitting on the beach. He was nothing but a silhouette in the night, but you approached him anyway, your drunken state leading you to want to be a little too friendly than you normally would be. You stumbled over to the stranger, but realized as you got closer that it wasn’t a stranger at all. Rafe Cameron sat on the sand with his need pulled to his chest, hands resting on his knees. His button up shirt was halfway open, blowing slightly in the breeze as he stared at the ocean.
Being a Pogue, your normally would have avoided Kooks like the plague, especially this Kook. But for some reason, possibly your drunkenness or some invisible string of fate connecting you to him, you continued walking toward him until you were standing right above him. You unceremoniously collapsed into the sand beside him, causing him to glance at you strangely.
“What are you doing here, Pogue?” He said, though he lacked the usual venom behind the words. You turned your head towards him slightly, giving him a small smile before turning back to the ocean.
“It’s so beautiful, isn’t it? Especially at night, you can see the moon reflecting off the water. It looks like a portal to another world that just goes on forever. Sometimes I wish I could just jump in and disappear. End up in some other universe where everything is as beautiful as the ocean.”
Rafe stared at you as you spoke. Despite you being a Pogue, he’d always found you beautiful, though if his friends asked he would use a different word like hot or fuckable. But right now, as the moon shone down on your hair and the light from the kegger illuminated your outline, he couldn’t think of any other word but beautiful. As you spoke, your words floated from your mouth and into his chest, wrapping around his heart in a comforting embrace. He had gotten into an argument with his dad before the party and he felt like shit. He’d tired to bail, but Kelce and Topper dragged him from his home on Figure 8 and down to The Cut, promising liquor and drugs would cure his bad mood. They had no idea the real reason behind his anger and sadness.
As soon as he could, he escaped from the loud and chaotic kegger to this quiet spot on the beach, needing a moment on his own to just be. Then you come along and, had you ben anyone else, he would have yelled at you to go the fuck away. But no, it was you, the Pogue who always smiled at him when they made eye contact, the one who apologized for her friends when they started shit, but wasn’t afraid to chew him out when he was the shit-starter. He’d always tried to ignore his little crush on you, knowing it would never happen. But now you were here and speaking to him like no one else had.
“Yeah, that sounds nice.” He replied, not taking his eyes off you. You turned and made eye contact with him, raising an eye brow at him.
“So, what’s the Kook King doing sitting over here all alone?” You asked. Rafe gave you a sad smile, breaking eye contact to look at his hands, tapping his fingers on his knees.
“I could ask the same thing of the Pogue Princess,” He said. You laughed and Rafe’s heart skipped a beat. He’d never heard your laugh before but now it was the only thing he ever wanted to hear for the rest of his life.
“I’m not the Pogue Princess,” You chuckled, shaking your head, “I just wanted some air, and to feel the waves under my feet. Helps me stay grounded.”
Rafe nodded and looked back at the ocean. A comfortable silence settled between the two of you for a short moment. You were the one to break it.
“So? I answered your question, now you need to answer mine. And I asked first so if you don’t answer that’s just plain rude.”
Rafe chuckled and glanced at you. He ran his hand through his hair, messing up the slicked back style. You watched as his hair fell in his eyes and licked your lips. Rafe was a dick, yes, but you couldn’t help but notice how attractive he was. All those times he and JJ were at each other’s throats, your eyes would wander to the tall boy, taking in every detail of him. You would never admit it the other Pogues, but he intrigued you. He was never as rude to you as he was to the other Pogues. Once he’d even smiled at you and said “thank you” when you’d handed him a cup of beer at a kegger. Kiara, who had been right next to you, was convinced he had been possessed.
You had never been a fan of the whole Kook versus Pogue rivalry, you thought it was cliche and dumb. But you continued to abide by the rules of the island, despite the constant urge to go up to Rafe and befriend him. After all, you had made friends with Sarah, why not the other Cameron sibling?
“Didn’t really want to come to this kegger in the first place. Since I’m here, might as well enjoy some shitty beer and a great view while trying to ignore all my problems.”
“I get that. I ignore my problems all the time. Whenever I get ice out of the freezer and a couple cubes fall to the ground, I always just kick them under the fridge.”
Rafe laughed, a genuine, joyful laugh that made your heart flutter.
“I’ve done the exact same thing many, many times,” He said.
“I’m assuming your problems are a little bigger than ice cubes.”
The smile slowly faded from his face and he nodded. “Yeah, just a little bit,”
You looked at him as a pained expression crossed his face. You already missed his laugh, and you were determined to hear it again.
“Well, can I help you ignore your problems? Even if it’s just for a little while?” You said.
Rafe looked up at you, eyes sad but a smile on his lips. “I would love that.”
You and Rafe talked about nothing as the party continued to rage on behind you. You told him all the shitty jokes you knew while he told you about embarrassing stories about his sister and his friends. You got into a short argument about what fast food place had the best fries, never coming to an agreement. You weren’t sure how much time had passed, hours maybe, but you didn’t want it to end. You had moved closer to Rafe and he to you until your thighs and shoulders were touching. The conversation had died down for a moment as you made eye contact with each other. His tongue flicked out and licked his lips, drawing your eyes to them.
“Do you know what else will help you ignore your problems?” You asked. Both of you slowly moved closer and closer towards each other, eyes flicking from eyes to lips and back again.
“What?” Rafe asked. You answered him by leaning forward and connecting your lips to his. Your hands gripped the sand for balance has he reach up to place a hand on the back of your head, pulling you closer to deepen the kiss. His other hand rested on your hip, gripping it as if his life depended on it. You raised your hands to run your fingers through his hair, almost falling on top of him. The Hand on your hip swiftly wrapped around your waist, pulling you into his lap. You straddled him, fingers threading through his light hair. He tasted like beer and mint and heaven. His tongue ran along her bottom lip and you opened your mouth, allowing him to explore to his heart content. His hands moved underneath your shirt, running up and down your sides. One of his thumbs brushed up against the bottom of your breast, feeling you through the thin fabric of your bra. You let out a moan into his mouth that motivated him to move further. His grip on you tightened, pulling you flush against him. Your lips were soft and sweet, every negative thought disappearing from his mind, being replaced by you, you, you. Rafe didn’t want to forget a single part of this moment. He memorized the curve of your hip, the softness of your lips. The way you smelled and the way you moaned and breathed and tasted. He was euphoric, questioning whether or not this was a dream.
His hand had just ventured underneath your bra, lips creating dark spots are your neck when someone yelled from the direction of the kegger.
“Y/N!”
Your eyes snapped open as you looked towards the edge of the kegger. In the distance, you could see the silhouette of the Pogues against the fire light. They were waving their arms and shouting your name. Rafe, however, paid no mind, sucking on the sensitive spot below your ear that made you moan.
“Rafe,” you moaned his name. You pulled his hair, forcing him away from your neck to look in your eyes. “I have to go.”
You kissed him again as you slowly removed yourself from his lap. His hand gripped your arm as you stood, your lips still attached. You giggled as your rested your forehead on his, pecking the tip of his nose. You finally disconnected from him, but your eyes never left his as you walked backwards toward the other Pogues.
“I’ll see you around, Cameron,” You said before turning on your heel, jogging towards your friends. Rafe stood their frozen, hair a mess and lips swollen as he stared at your retreating figure. A he couldn’t help but smile as he stood up, brushing the sand from his body. As he walked toward where Topper and Kelce were standing, he prayed for another moment where he got to taste your lips.
You reached the Pogues, a smile still on your face as you adjusted your messy hair.
“Ready to go?” John B asked. You nodded walked next to Kiara and Sarah towards the Twinkie. Both girls examined your giggly state and the hickies that littered your collarbone and neck.
“Who was that?” Sarah asked, smirking at you. Your words caught in your throat for a moment, unsure if you should tell the truth or not. You quickly glanced over the fire and met Rafe’s gaze. He winked at you and blush crawled up your cheeks. You quickly looked back at Sarah and smiled.
“Just some Touron,” You answered. Sarah and Kie laughed at your blushing face, asking you more questions about the Touron you had just made out with on the beach. You told them you knew nothing about them, dodging their questions and suggestive looks. Tonight had been a dream, you weren’t ready to wake up yet. As you approached the parked van, you took one last glance at Rafe and smiled. You hoped you would never wake up.

take me home - part 3
Tumblr media
(not my gif)
jj maybank x reader
a/n: literally 3k+ of fluffy fakeness lol. i promise next chapter is a little more exciting. also, sorry about how late this one is.
“The Dating Things”, as JJ called them, turned out to be the easiest part of having a fake boyfriend. JJ’s hands felt comfortable, almost familiar on you. Around your waist, your shoulders, on your thigh.
“Here, Kiara’s looking.” After only a week, you were used to cueing him into Rafe and Kiara’s angry glances. For the first couple days, he was a little clueless. You would have to pick up his arms and drape them over you before their eyes turned away. Eventually, he got the hang of it. Once you pointed out the looks coming your way, he was automatically more than a few inches closer.
Soon enough, he became insanely good at noticing the stares and glanced even before you did, and startled you whenever he suddenly tugged you towards him.
You were currently right by his side on a log. The bonfire in front of you was roaring already, illuminating the faces of the people sitting around it. JJ chattered eagerly with a couple of tourons near you two. You glanced up from the fire but immediately shot them back down when you met Kiara’s blazing eyes. The fire just made them that much more intense.
You jammed an elbow into JJ’s side. He winced, turning to you in annoyance before you gave him a look. He immediately recognized the meaning behind your glare and subtly snaked an arm around you. Kiara diverted her eyes then, down to the sandy earth again.
“Success,” you whispered. JJ smiled and turned back to his momentary friends. You elbowed him again to get his attention once more.
“Ow! Would you stop doing that?” He yelped.
“JJ, you remember how I said my mom wanted to have you over for dinner sometime?” You whispered. Now is as good a time as ever.
“Yeah? Why?”
“Well, sometime is tomorrow.” You sheepishly smile.
“What?” JJ’s eyes turn into saucers.
“Yeah, she’s making a whole chicken. She’s very excited.”
“Tomorrow night? Why are you telling me this now, there’s no way we’ll be able to pull this off!” JJ’s voice is getting a little too loud for your liking, but he notices too.
“C’mon, we’ll talk. I’ll walk you back to your place.” JJ grips your hand abruptly, yanking you up and pulling you away from the bonfire.
“JJ, it’s really not that big of a deal. The only one in my family who would be angry about me and you would be my dad, and he’s in California on business. You have nothing to worry about.” “I have everything to worry about here, Y/n!” JJ drops your hand as soon as you’re out of sight from the pogues, walking nearly sideways to face you as he talks. “First of all, you have a little sister. Isn’t she like eight? I’m not exactly a little-girl type of likable.”
“She’s nine.” You correct him.
“Second of all, the whole point of this was to make Rafe think we’re some super cutesy couple, right?” He gesticulates wildy.
You don’t answer, wondering if that was really what was behind you and JJ’s relationship.
“Right?” He tries again.
“Okay, maybe it was. So, what?”
“So, if I mess up in front of your mom, it’ll eventually get back to Rafe, won’t it? He knows you well enough, Y/n. I’ve seen the way you guys used to look at eachother. He’ll see right through our bullshit!”
JJ’s accusation stops you in your tracks. “What does that mean?”
“What?” JJ gets a little bit further before realizing you’re not with him. He turns around to face you.
“What?”
“What does that mean?” You crinkle your face.
“I mean, you know.” JJ raises his eyebrows and gives you a look.
“No, I don’t know! What does that mean?” You’re getting defensive. You don’t mean to, but you know what JJ means. And you don’t want to.
“C’mon, Y/n. It’s obvious you and Rafe have, I don’t know, unfinished business?” JJ finishes his sentence slowly, trying to not set off any fuses.
“Okay, fuck you, JJ.” You scoff.
“C’mon, Y/n! It’s nothing bad, you guys just have a history! All I’m saying is he still knows you really well! Probably better than I do!” You start walking again, a lot faster this time. JJ jogs to catch up to you.
“Maybe, but what Rafe Cameron and I did or didn’t have isn’t any of your business. And it’s definitely not yours to shove in my face when I’m obviously trying to put it behind me and get away from him.” You draw your brows together. You know your anger is bordering completely unjustified, but JJ makes it seem like Rafe Cameron knows you inside and out.
You hate the idea of that. The idea that the you that Rafe could read like the back of his hand is the same you that he aggressively flirts with. You hate the idea Rafe doesn’t see you any different than he used to.
You hate the idea that Rafe became a whole new person, and you stayed the same.
“Yeah, okay, trying to put it behind you?” It’s JJ’s turn to scoff now. His voice is edged with annoyance. He walks backwards to stay in front of you, his whole body tense. You keep your eyes trained straight ahead, refusing to look at him as he glares at you.
“Right, so if you’re trying to put it behind you, then why are you trying to act like you’re with me? You’re obviously not over fucking Cameron if you’re throwing you and I in his face like this.”
All the anger falls off your face and is replaced by hurt. Fucking Cameron? Is that why he is so certain about your history together? He thinks you slept with Rafe?
If JJ thinks that, how many more people do? “Fucking Cameron?” You whisper.
The way you pause again seems to make JJ realize what he’s just said to you. His whole face washes over with regret, his mouth opening, then closing again in surprise.
“Y/n, I didn’t mean it like that.” He shakes his head.
“Right. Right, of course. You have a nice night, JJ.” You begin to speed-walk again, trying to put as much distance between you and JJ as possible.
“Y/n, wait! Y/n! Where are you going?” JJ yells after you, but he doesn’t follow you.
You turn around again, forcing a small smile.
“I’ll meet you at two tomorrow by the ferry, okay? If you’re going to ruin my dinner tomorrow, you should at least do it in a nice suit.”
JJ laughs, exasperated, and shakes his head. He rubs his forehead for a second, looking anywhere but you.
When he finally meets your eyes, he looks tired.
“Yeah. Yeah, okay. I’ll see you at two.” He nods.
You press your lips together and nod, folding your arms and continuing your walk back home.
This time, alone.
The next day at two, JJ is already waiting for you when you get to the port. He has sunglasses on, but judging by the logo on the side, he definitely shoplifted them.
His tank top is thin, but he’s shaking the bottom of the shirt up and down, as if he’s fanning himself. It’s scorching outside, the sidewalk could be frying you.
“Hey,” he pushes himself off the railing he was leaning on. “You ready?”
JJ’s smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes, which are searching your face apprehensively.
He thinks you’re still mad at him.
“The real question is are you ready, Maybank. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’m kind of a makeover queen around here.” You bump his shoulder and he puffs out a breath. He grins again, and this time, it’s a genuine smile.
“Makeover? What do you mean, makeover?” The smile falls as he processes your words.
You grab his arm and pull him up the ramp onto the boat.
“You didn’t say anything about a makeover, you said I just needed new clothes. Y/n, what do you mean makeover?” JJ frantically presses you with questions.
He complains the whole ride over to the mainland, pestering you about what exactly you have in store for him, but you refuse to show him the list you’ve made. You have to move your hand far away from him whenever he reaches for the little piece of paper.
You know JJ could easily overpower your smaller arms and take the list if he really wanted to, but he won’t. He just likes reaching for it and watching you giggle at his grabby hands.
When you’re finally on the street, you uncurl the paper you’ve been tightly clutching onto this whole time. JJ peers over your shoulder, glimpsing at the list. You lean back, holding the paper close to your face.
“Okay, well, lucky for you, first things first is just the fit. Let’s go, I know a place.” You stuff the paper into the pocket of your jeans, setting off to the small shop where your mom bought your dad a new suit for his birthday.
“Okay, are you trying to make me feel poor?” He stares at the shop window in front of him, mannequins displaying expensive button ups and shoes.
“Settle down, I’m paying.” You pat his arm.
He raises an eyebrow as he looks at you. “You are?”
“Yeah,” you nod, “the one with the balls usually pays on a first date, right?” You smirk, swinging the door open and rushing into the air-conditioned store. JJ follows.
“What? What did you just say?” JJ follows you around like a lost puppy. You sift through a pile of stiff, collared, button up shirts stacked on a table, draping a few over your arm.
JJ leans forward over the table of shirts. “Did you call this a date?” He smiles knowingly.
You blush a bit, but keep your face focused down. “You know what I meant.”
JJ hums in agreement, pressing his lips to keep his smile small.
“You see anything you like?” You ask him.
“I don’t know what I like around here, you’re paying.” He follows after you as you scan through black trousers. You pull a pair out and unfold them, holding them up to JJ’s hips.
He jumps back, startled.
“Hold still,” you mumble, putting the too-short pants back and pulling out a bigger size. JJ raises his hands so you can hold the longer pants up to his legs. “Hold these here?”
JJ huffs, but puts his hands on his hips to hold the trousers up. You lean back to check the sizing, then realize how stupid he looks. Before he can move his hands and drop the pants, you whip out your phone to snap a picture.
“Delete it.” JJ drops the pants into a bundle in his arm and points at your phone. “Now. Delete it.” You clutch your phone closer to you. “But what if I need to get them altered or something?”
“Y/n.” JJ’s voice is monotone, but his eyes are dancing with joy. He lunges for your phone and you squeal, jumping back and darting behind a shelf of cologne. JJ maneuvers around it and runs after you, rushing through racks of sweaters and khakis. He catches up to you quickly, his stride surpassing yours.
He flings an arm around your stomach, yanking you back against him before he swiftly grabs your phone. He keeps you pinned to him as he holds the phone up, out of your reach and deletes the photo.
He releases you and you stumble as he tosses his phone for you to catch.
“Asshole,” you grumble, picking up the pants you dropped running from JJ.
You wander the store for a while, gaining odd looks from the other shoppers as well as the cashier ringing up clothes.
Once you’ve been satisfied with the enormous mess of clothes JJ is cradling in his arms, you shove him into a dressing room. You crash in one of the comfy leather chairs outside the rooms.
After a few minutes of JJ crashing around and the sounds of hangers clashing, the room falls silent.
“JJ?” You knock.
“No.” His voice is firm.
“No?”
“I look horrible. Like someone’s grandpa.”
“I don’t trust you to judge fashion. Come out here.” You back away from the door, and JJ begrudgingly shuffles out.
He’s wearing a maroon crew neck over a white collared polo and khakis. He turns to face the mirror, tugging at the collar of his shirt.
You suck a breath in. “No, you do look like my grandpa.”
JJ gives you an unamused look through the mirror.
“In the best way possible!” You follow up.
“You’re not making me wear this.” JJ points a finger at you, retreating back into his dressing room.
“Wait,” You push the door open just as he’s about to close it. “Here.”
You pull out the black trousers and a black suit jacket. You shuffle through the huge pile of crumpled clothes he’s dumped there. You eventually find what you’re looking for - a navy blue button down. You push the clothes onto JJ’s chest.
“Try those.”
JJ rolls his eyes, but accepts the clothes and pushes you back out.
“Y/n, this is even worse.” He groans as he pulls on the jacket.
“Would you stop complaining and let me see you?”
JJ keeps grumbling but comes out of the dressing room.
You had expected the outfit to look good, but you weren’t expecting it to look that good on him.
“It’s, um, it’s alright.” You nod slowly, blinking away you thoughts.
“Alright? That’s all? No rude comments?” JJ smiles. “Who are you and where is my Y/n?”
You try not to react to JJ calling you ‘My Y/n’ as you stand to fix the way he’s bunched up the shirt to tuck it in. You smooth out the wrinkles in his jacket when his hand catches yours.
You meet his eyes. They have the same look in them that they did last night.
“Hang on,” he speaks quickly and quietly. “I’m sorry.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry about last night. It was out of line for me to say that.” He holds eye contact as he talks.
“It’s okay,” You break it first and focus on the jacket again.
“No, it wasn’t. Rafe is just a,” He pauses, “sore spot for me. I’m sorry.”
“JJ, it’s alright. I was getting angry over nothing, really. I overreacted. I guess it’s a sore spot for both of us.”
JJ lets go of your hand then, letting them fall back to your sides. He purses his lips as if he’s thinking, but simply nods and leaves you outside alone once again.
After he’s taken the outfit off and returned himself back to normalcy, you take the clothes from him.
The cashier gives you some more looks as you pay for everything. Your family has been shopping at this store for decades. You’re sure they’re not used to the ladies of your bloodline dragging in boys with muddy sneakers and thin tank tops.
JJ lugs the bag along with him to more shops as you move down the list. Shoes first. You browse a few watches in a jewelry store but ultimately decide you can easily give him one of your dad’s many old ones. You nearly convince him to let you take him to get a haircut but he’s too stubborn and oddly protective of his hair.
After you’ve dragged JJ around for a couple of hours, and his arms are sufficiently dragged down with shopping bags, you usher him back onto the ferry back to the island.
Your legs are tired, and JJ’s arms are tired.
To keep him occupied and from complaining, you point out obvious tourists on the boat : an obscene amount of sunscreen, usually carrying bags and always wearing such fancy outfits. JJ turns it into a game: you sort each person on the boat into either pogues, kooks, or tourons. Or at least which category they would fall into if they lived in the Outer Banks. You take the game another step, and begin to create elaborate life stories for the people.
You’re mid-monologue, trying to explain why the little lady with a large Sunday hat and a string of pearls obviously murdered her three ex husbands and now finances the wealthy lifestyle of her and her poodle’s with the inheritance money when JJ’s head lolls onto your shoulder.
He’s fallen asleep. Your heated speech trails off and you sniff for a second. Do you wake him up? You consider it for a second, but he looks peaceful. There’s a serene look on his face that you’ve never been able to see when he’s awake. Instead, you lean your head against his. You mean to just close your eyes for a moment, but you black out before you know it.
You’re suddenly shaken awake by someone grabbing your shoulder. It’s the elderly couple that sat a few rows in front of you. JJ had claimed that he was certain they were high school sweethearts that went on to rob banks together. The woman shook you awake, and is smiling sweetly down at you.
“Hi, sweetheart, we’re unloading.” There is no way this sweet lady was a bank robber.
JJ wakes up as you stir.
“JJ, get up, we’re here.” You shrug your shoulder a little, and JJ picks his head up.
The old couple begins to leave again. For a second, the old lady leans down and whispers to you. “You two make a very sweet couple. Remind me of us when we were that young.”
She pats your shoulder and follows her husband.
“Bank robbers,” JJ groans as he stretches besides you, obviously not having heard what was just said.
A sweet couple? You know you’ve been playing as a couple, but do you really look the part even when you don’t need to be seen?
Once you’re on the dock and wide awake again, you deposit all of the bags onto JJ.
“Ask Kiara for help getting ready if you need it. That’ll make her insane.” You smirk.
“Genius. You make sure Rafe hears that I’m coming for dinner.” He points out in return.
“Look at us! We make a pretty good fake couple.” You raise your hand for a high-five and JJ slaps it.
“Okay,” You check your phone for the time. “It’s 6:45ish now. I’ll see you at eight at my place, alright? Don’t be late!” You emphasize the last part. “Late? Who, me? You must have the wrong person.” JJ fakes confusion. “Oh, shit, did you say 6:45? I told John B I’d be back by 6:15!” He yelps.
“Bye!” You yell after him as he runs further and further from you.
He would definitely be late tonight.

One Love, Two Mouths - Sarah Cameron
Now that your close friends and family know, you had to keep up the lie that it was Scarlet you were after when really it was her best friend your eyes were on and being at a New Year’s Eve party with her there proved to be harder than you had anticipated.
A/N: This is the second part to Sweater Weather so make sure you have read that already if you haven’t :)
Warnings: some curse words; mentions of alcohol and drinking
Word Count: 3.5k+
--------------------------------------------------
<- Part 1
It would not be you and Rafe if you both hadn’t woken up in the middle of the afternoon after staying up way too late watching movies and joking around. When you felt something blowing in your face, you opened your eyes to see how seriously close Rafe’s face was to your own.
“Rafe,” you mumbled, shaking his body lightly with your hand on his shoulder. “Scoot the fuck back.” You would have moved him yourself, but he was much larger and if you pushed against him, you were sure you would end up pushing yourself off the bed considering how little room he had provided you.
“Whaaa?” he dragged out as he barely moved and kept his eyes closed. You went against your better judgment and tried to push him yourself, but you should’ve listened to yourself. He did not move an inch, but you overestimated the amount of space you had on your side of the bed and felt the mattress slip from beneath you. Your arms reached out to grab onto something, anything, but they caught nothing, and you landed on the ground with a thud.
“Ow,” you muttered before Rafe’s head shot up from the pillow he was just drooling on.
“Why are you on the floor?” he inquired as your eyes rolled at the boy.
“Because you are a bed hog and when you didn’t move when I asked, I tried to move you myself which got me here,” you told him while you two stared at each other for a moment before bursting into a fit of giggles together.
“Are-are-are you okay?” he breathed through his laughs while he lent you a hand to help you out. You took his hand in yours and let him lift you up before you sat down on the side of the bed you just woke up from.
“Yes, just don’t sleep all crazy and we’ll be good,” you said as your laughter died down. When you looked over at him, you still noticed the saliva slipping down his face.
“You need to do something about that,” you told him, pointing towards the drool. His hand came up to his face, effectively wiping it away before he attempted to wipe it off on you. Your movements were quicker than his and you managed to grab his wrist before it met your skin.
“I don’t think so,” you warned while your other hand reached to grab a tissue from his bedside table and cleaned the slobber off with it. Rafe chuckled at you when he leaned back on the pillows while you tossed the tissue in the trash can.
“Are you getting ready here or at your place?” the Cameron boy questioned before he reached over to grab his phone and check the time, his practically bulging out of their sockets at the sight of it being nearly three in the afternoon. You laughed at his expression as you picked up your own cellular device.
“Probably my place. What about you and the other two dorks?” His face showed mock hurt, causing your giggles to increase.
“I don’t about Topper and Kelce, but I’ll probably get ready here because I have to help Sarah prepare for the party. You gonna get some chips, right?” the blond told you while he rubbed at his eyes a little and sat up again. Tonight was the New Year’s Eve party that Scarlet normally threw, but since her parents decided not to go on their annual ski trip and Ward and Rose were on a work trip, Sarah suggested they have it here. All it took was a little convincing to get Wheezie to spend the night with a friend and the house was free.
“Yep, I should probably get going anyway. I gotta shower and do other things as well,” you informed the boy as you rose from your spot next to him and slipped on your shoes. You saw yourself in the reflection of his mirror, wearing some pajama shorts, an oversized shirt that you had stolen from Kelce a few months ago, and your old beat-up converse. Your hair was a knotted mess from the particularly good sleep you had gotten, but at the moment you didn’t care. In your opinion, it completed the hot mess look you appeared to be going for.
“Okay well, be here at like nine to help me clean up and shit. Sarah is gonna be on my ass and I can’t handle her like you do. You have this like magic touch when it comes to her.” He did not know it, but his words caused your cheeks to heat up. You took pride in being able to read and understand his sister very well. Of course, it was because you basically studied the girl, you were in love with her.
“Hey, also Scarlet is coming tonight so we might can get you in with her,” Rafe shot you a wink after speaking. You rolled your eyes at him, knowing all three of them were going to be pushing you towards the girl. Scarlet was nice and all, but she was not Sarah.
“I don’t want to start the new year like that. I want to start like I do every year, with my boys, okay?” Rafe nodded with a grin that told you he heard you but would not be listening at all. “Rafe, I’m serious,” you warned in a low tone while stepping back towards the door.
“Me too, y/n. You need to get out there!” he shouted as you slammed the door shut behind you before leaning against it, a small chuckle falling past your lips.
“Get out there? Y/n, are you finally dumping those bozos and finding a real man?” the voice that made your knees weak and your heart stop asked from beside you. You gasped, the girl’s presence scaring you a bit.
“Jesus, Sarah,” you muttered when your hand flew to your chest. She giggled at you, the melodious sound flowing through your ears like angelic music. Everything about her, especially that cute smile of hers, had you so captivated by her. You needed to leave soon before you made a damn fool of yourself or worse, Rafe came out and found out that you were crushing on his sibling.
“Sorry, y/n,” she laughed, her hand clasping on your shoulder, “but seriously, are you getting out there tonight? Scarlet and I made sure to invite some pretty hot guys to the party.” You haven’t told her about your sexuality yet. The only people who knew were Rafe, Topper, Kelce, and your family. You were planning on telling her, but you didn’t know when.
“Um, that’s nice Sarah, but I kinda wanna lay low tonight and just drink with the guys,” you told her honestly as you had just told her older brother. You didn’t plan on having the two eldest Camerons pushing you to take a shot at someone tonight.
“Oh, come on y/n. Live a little,” she whined before shooting you a wink and backing away towards her room.
“I might,” you called out as she retreated past the doorway. Once she was gone, you let out a sigh and skipped down the steps to go out to your car.
It did not feel like hours had passed since you were last at Tannyhill, but it had been. You had gone home, showered, got ready for the party, stopped at the store to get those chips Rafe asked you to pick up along with some other things that you knew he probably forgot to get that Sarah wanted him to get, and made it back to the Cameron estate in a rather good time frame. It was 8:30, thirty minutes before Rafe had asked you to be there and when he saw you walk in, his face flooded with relief.
“Y/n!” he shouted before rushing to you to help with the bags you were holding. His eyes dropped from yours for a moment to look you over, a smirk growing on his face. “You look good. Is this for Scarlet?” He couldn’t help but tease you.
“No this is for me, asshole,” you huffed while shoving his shoulder with your now free arm. He wasn’t lying though. You did look good. Your makeup and hair looked flawless. You wore your ripped jeans and a nice flowy tank, the colors complimenting your skin wonderfully. You looked amazing and there was no denying it. It wasn’t for Scarlet though. It was mainly for you and a little bit for Sarah, even though you were sure she wouldn’t spare you a glance.
“Y/n! You look beautiful!” Okay, maybe she’d glance at you, but it wasn’t the way you wanted her to look at you. The compliment coming from her made your heart soar to the sky and flutter like a butterfly. Your cheeks burned at her words as you nodded at her.
“Thank you, Sarah! You don’t look too bad yourself.” She only had her hair and makeup done, still wearing her t-shirt and shorts you saw her in earlier, but to you, she looked ethereal. She was an angel, a goddess, a princess in your eyes. Sarah blushed at your words before looking down at her feet.
“Thank you, y/n! You are way too nice to be friends with him,” she commented, earning a ‘hey!’ from Rafe as you two giggled at it.
“Let’s go take this to the kitchen,” Rafe reminded you and you nodded at him before waving at Sarah and following him to the counter where all the food and drinks sat.
“So, I got the chips you asked for and some more different kinds, then I got some drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and the stuff to make some dip and punch,” you informed him while unloading the bags.
“Jesus, y/n. I only asked for chips,” he chuckled while scratching at the back of his head.
“Yeah, I know, but Sarah asked you to get the drinks and I can see you didn’t,” you told him while you looked around for them, but they were nowhere in sight.
“I was gonna get Topper to get them before he came but now, I don’t have to,” he laughed at your preparedness.
“Then I know you three like that beefy cheese dip thing that I make, and I know Sarah likes punch, so I decided to get stuff to make them both.”
“Okay, do you need help with anything?” Rafe asked, feeling a little bad that you had to do his job.
“Not right now. Go ask Sarah if she needs help with anything because I’m sure she’s probably lost her mind planning this thing,” you offered. He nodded before leaving you in the kitchen to get to making stuff. Having basically grown up there, you knew where everything was, so you got to work on it all.
Around two hours later, people started arriving and the party commenced. Kelce hung out in the kitchen with you, and by hung out, he sat on the counter next to you and went to town on the dip that sat between you both. You were about to hop off to get yourself a refill, but you saw Topper and Rafe walk in and asked Topper to get you some more, which he gladly did.
“Thanks, Top,” you smiled at the boy when he handed you your beverage back. He gave you a nod before standing next to you as Rafe did the same next to Kelce.
“Pass me some chips, bro,” Topper asked Kelce while both Rafe and Kelce had a hand in the bag already.
“I got more over there,” you reminded the boys who left Kelce’s bag alone and went to get their own. Your eyes fell back on the girl you had been staring at all night. The way her brown eyes shined and her lips curved up into that gorgeous grin made you fall harder for her. You watched her throw her head back in laughter, you dying to be the one to make her laugh like that, but for now, you settled on just watching it from afar.
“You are staring at Scarlet,” Rafe teased you while dipping his chip into the bowl beside you. You rolled your eyes at him before Kelce spoke up.
“She’s been looking over there all night.” You looked back over to Sarah and Scarlet was in fact next to her. You had not noticed, your eyes obviously trained on someone else, but staring at Scarlet was a better cover story anyway.
“N-no,” you stuttered, a tell-tale sign that you were caught. The trio chorused in laughter, all knowing that you were lying. “Fine, I was looking over there a little.”
“More like a lot, y/n/n,” Topper grinned while looking over to the girl they thought your eyes were glued to.
“I told you, y/n. Just make a move tonight. Get your first girl. Do you know how exciting that will be?” Does he know how exciting it will be if you get the girl of your dreams? Not her best friend that they thought you were infatuated with.
“Rafe, I told you I want to spend New Year’s Eve with you guys, not pining over a girl who will probably never feel the same. No one else even knows I’m into girls besides you three and my family. That’s it and I don’t want to tell anyone else for now.” Your eyes found the girl again, but now she wasn’t with Scarlet at all. She was with some guy, probably one of the hot guys she mentioned inviting earlier, and he had his hand on her arm slowly sliding it down until he found her waist.
It shouldn’t have bothered you. You weren’t together. You weren’t even talking. To Sarah, you two weren’t even a possibility, but it hurt a little. It stung to see her with someone else. You felt your eyes begin to water but you blinked any tears that dared to show themselves away.
“Uh, I’m gonna go outside and get some fresh air,” you mumbled to the three that sat around you before hopping off the countertop and slipping through people until you found the back door and walked out of it. The three boys looked at each other in confusion, all of them clearly sensing that you were upset about something.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have teased her about the Scarlet thing?” Rafe spoke, now feeling incredibly guilty. You and him teased each other all the time, so he saw no harm in it, but now he felt like he had crossed a line with you.
“Or maybe Scarlet wasn’t the problem at all,” Kelce wondered out loud, the puzzle pieces fitting together perfectly in his head. Rafe and Topper unfortunately were not picking up what he was putting down, so the boy rolled his eyes before explaining. “She was looking at Sarah and Scarlet, right? Well, when Scarlet was gone and Sarah was over there alone with a guy, y/n got upset so…”
“She likes Sarah,” Topper finished Kelce’s sentence. “She probably didn’t want to tell you because that’s your sister.”
“And your ex,” Rafe reminded him. Rafe did not care if you liked Sarah. He only cared that you were happy and if that meant you were with his sister, then that was fine. You were basically family already so might as well actually become it.
“Rafe, that was forever ago, and I don’t care if she likes Sarah,” Topper told him.
“I don’t either,” Rafe stated.
“Well, we should tell her it’s okay if she likes Sarah,” Topper suggested while Rafe nodded at him, them both setting their chip bags down and about to leave before Kelce stopped them.
“I think she’s beating you to it,” he said while nodding towards the blonde girl who walked out the door. “Let’s give them a moment.”
Sarah saw you walk out and having grown up around you and you being the only other girl she could really trust, she knew something was wrong with you. She assumed it was something the guys had said as a joke, but she knew you and she knew that you would shoot them right back with some sarcasm or a witty comeback when they did something like that. She knew that something had to really be bothering you for you to excuse yourself and it worried her.
Sarah saw you standing out by the water. You had taken your sandals off and held them in your hand as you stared out at the moon’s reflection on the water’s surface. The wind blew your hair to the side softly and the moonlight shone on your face perfectly. You glowed, looking as beautiful as ever and the sight caused a feeling in Sarah that she had never felt about you before and she liked it.
“Y/n?” she called out when she had gotten closer to you. You almost did not notice her. You originally thought the footsteps you heard were Rafe’s, but they were actually Sarah’s. You smiled at her when another gust of wind came your way, causing you to shiver. You mentally cursed yourself for wearing what you had chosen as it did not help you in the cold at all.
“Come here,” Sarah mumbled when she stood behind you. She wore a large cardigan, one you were quite envious of at the moment before grabbing your wrists when you turned to her. Your eyebrows drew together when she linked your hands together behind her back underneath the sweater material, but you already felt much warmer. She took the sides of the cardigan in her hands and brought them together at the small of your back so that you both were now wrapped up in the warmth of the cardigan and each other.
“Thanks, Sarah,” you sighed in relief while your head rested on her shoulder as did hers on yours.
“So, what’s got you so upset?”
“How did you know I was upset?” you questioned her before she laughed.
“Y/n, I know you. I could tell and you always come to look at the water when something’s bothering you so what is it?” she inquired when she pulled away to look at you. Now was the best time to tell her about it so you did.
“I’m bi,” you told her confidently. You felt wonderful telling her, but also a bit of nervousness came with the confession since she was the first female friend that you had told. All that nervousness disappeared in an instant though when you caught sight of that beautiful smile of hers.
“I’m glad you finally realized,” she chuckled a bit while your eyes widened. “What? You think I didn’t know. I used to see how you looked at Kie a few years ago.”
“I don’t like Kiara anymore,” you mumbled, “and I don’t like Scarlet either despite what the guys think so if you hear that, it’s false.”
“Well, who do you like?” You wanted to scream from the rooftops that it was her that you liked but you could not do that, could you? Her big brown eyes sparkled at you as she awaited your response. Tell her something, anything at this point.
“I- uh,” you stumbled with your words a bit as you heard the people inside begin counting down from ten. “It’s um, you. Damn it, it’s you that I like,” you started as you stepped back from her and her embrace, back into the unrelenting cold while the chanting of numbers rung from the house. “I’m sorry if this makes you feel weird or something,” five, “I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable,” four,” I still want to be your friend,” three, “and hopefully you want to be mine,“ two, “I’ve messed everything up, haven’t I?” one.
“Shut up,” Sarah whispered before her hands cupped your face and pulled you closer to hers. The moment you had been dreaming of for quite some time now was happening. Your dream was coming true as you felt her lips connect with hers. Your eyes widened and you took in a sharp breath before you melted into her, your arms wrapping around her neck while hers fell to your waist. You heard the shouts coming from inside her home as everyone celebrated the new year, but in your mind, you were screaming in excitement about how you were starting your new year.
After some time, you both had to pull away for some air. Your eyes darted between her own before they glanced down at her swollen reddened lips and then came back up to her eyes.
“Sarah,” you sighed. It did not feel real. It felt real, but at the same time, it didn’t. Something was up. This couldn’t be true. The universe didn’t work like that. It normally gave you the shit end of the stick and now your dream was coming true.
“Y/n, I like you. I didn’t realize until just a few moments ago, but now I know, and I want to be with you,” she confessed to you. Your lips tugged upwards in a wide grin as you soaked in the moment.
“Really?” you asked, your mind still telling you this was all fake and would end soon. Sarah bit her bottom lip before nodding her head at you. “Then let’s be together.”

Neil Perry: You met when you both auditioned for a play at a community theatre Audition day has arrived, but Neil was more nervous than ever. The boys accompanied him into the theatre just in case something were to go wrong. Neil was reading over the audition lines, which come from Romeo and Juliet. The boys were really hyping Neil up in the back of the theatre until an older man came up on stage and got everyone's attention. "Attention everyone. Thank you for coming out for the auditions for Antony and Cleopatra. I truly believe we will have a wonderful cast for such a great Shakespearean tragedy. Ladies, please hand my assistant your paperwork and line up for your audition. You will perform your monologue onstage by yourself and then you will exit and take a seat. We will have a brief break and then begin with the men. Break a leg." He said as he exited the stage and sat in his seat next to the assistant he mentioned previously. One after the other, girls performed their monologues and the boys gawked. But then you got onstage and the group of boys just stopped dead in their tracks. "Hello, I am Y/F/N Y/L/N and I will be auditioning for Cleopatra." You performed your monologue of Juliet II ii 85 with all the passion and strive you could muster. Once you finished you had a standing ovation. You bowed and sat next to a girl you befriended at the audition. The girl auditions finished up and you all went on a brief break so the boys could prepare. "Neil, if you don't go after her, I will" Charlie said cheekily as he elbowed his friend. "That was the most beautiful and talented girl I have ever seen." Neil said as he looked in your direction across the room. It was soon the boys turn and one by one they went across the stage and performed, and then appeared Neil. "I'm Neil Perry and I will be auditioning for Antony." He performed his heart out, reciting Romeo III iii 33. He sat down right behind you. When all the auditions were officially over, the director came on the stage once more, "Brava ladies and gentlemen. Those were some amazing auditions and my assistant and I will have a hard time deciding the roles. This can take up to an hour so just be prepared. You were all amazing but remember that we have to make decisions. See you all in an hour or so."Just as the director and assistant left to deliberate on the casting, Neil turned towards his group of friends who were all enthusiastically giving him 'thumbs ups'. Neil smiled and turned back around. Suddenly you turned to the boy behind you. "Neil, is it?" "Uh, yeah I'm Neil. And you're Y/F/N, right?" "Yup! I wanted to let you know you were amazing up there! I was really invested. You have a promising career as an actor, I can't wait to work with you." You said with a smile as you turned back to the girl next to you and started chatting up a storm. Neil's heart melted at the thought of just simply being around you.
Todd Anderson: You were chilling in Mr.Keating's classroom because he's your dad You were sitting in a desk in the middle of your dads classroom, discussing some novels and plays before his students showed up for the class. You and your dad were discussing the interesting aspects tagged along with Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" when you were suddenly interrupted by a few boys entering the room. "Don't mind them, they like to come early." Your dad said as he waved the boys into the classroom with a smile. "How was Death of A Salesman, Mr.Keating?" Neil asked, knowing he went to see the play over the weekend. "Oh magnificent Mr.Perry. I do wish I could've brought you boys with me but I had some great company with me either way." Your dad as he shot you a smile. "Oh did you bring a lady friend with you?" Knox asked but as soon as those rolled off his tongue you shifted uncomfortably in your seat. "We keep forgetting about this doll in Todd's seat. Who are you darling?" Charlie asked as he looked from Todd to you and winked. Your dad chimed in before you could get a word in, "That is Y/N. She's my daughter. We actually saw the show together." Charlie blushed and leaned back in his seat, trying and failing to make himself seem smaller. "Sweetheart, I know you had some rather bold opinions of the play. Also you can sit in the front so poor Mr.Anderson can sit down." Your dad said as he motioned to a desk near his desk. You looked back at Todd who was staring, he turned and blushed as your rose from the seat you were just occupying. "I am so sorry Todd." You replied as you got up and moved seats. Todd quickly sat down but started to stare again as you began to explain how you felt about the play you had seen with your father.
Charlie Dalton: Select girls are allowed to attend Welton, and you were chosen and played in the schools orchestra Welton was known for only letting in some of the best, and when they were letting up to 10 girls into the school for the very first time, your parents did not hesitate to make sure you got one of those spots. Top of your class, president and captain of several clubs and teams, and first chair in the saxophone section with several professional orchestras vying for your skill made Mr.Nolan not even hesitate to welcome you to the school. You walked into your first class of the day. which was English, with your bag on your back and your saxophone case in your hand. You walked in and everyone turned around and stared at you in awe. "Miss Y/L/N, I was wondering when you would be joining us! You can take the empty seat next to Mr.Dalton and tell us a little about yourself." Mr.Keating said with a smile as you made your way to the empty seat. "I'm Y/N, I transferred from a boarding school about an hour away from here. I am top of my class and I play first chair saxophone." "That's brilliant! I love seeing a bright, young mind in my presence. I see you have your instrument with you, would you liked to play something for us?" "Uhm, yeah I would love to." You replied with a smile as you took out your saxophone and assembled it and tuned it. "This is Flight of the Bumblebee, one of the most difficult songs to play on any instrument." "Do you need someone to hold your music?" Charlie asked, rather enthusiastically. "No thank you, I actually have the piece memorised." Charlie looked sad but immediately perked up when you started to play. You were so engrossed by playing you you didn't notice Charlie making heart eyes and melting as he stared at the beauty in front of him.
Steven Meeks: You're staying your uncle Keating at Welton for the year as a foreign exchange student You and Keating just finished the meeting with Mr.Nolan about the terms and conditions about your stay. It was early in the morning and Keating offered to make you a cup of tea before classes were supposed to start, you agreed and stayed in Keating's classroom. It was supposed to be about another 45 minutes before classes began, so you popped a Beatles album into the record player and was just sitting at Keating's desk and absorbed the atmosphere of an American classroom. You were reading "Catcher in the Rye" as you waited for you uncle to come back to the classroom. You heard some robust laughter come closer to the room and you recognised it as your uncles but there were other voices you didn't recognise. You looked up from the book as soon as the laughter was in the classroom. Your uncle entered with two students by his side, he gave you your cup of tea and looked at the boys. "Mr.Pitts and Mr.Meeks, this is my niece Y/F/N. She's an exchange student from England this year. Can you boys help her around during the day so she doesn't get too lost?" Keating asked with a smile. Both boys were starstruck by the girl in front of them, but Steven was falling in love by the moment. Gerard snapped out of the fit first and elbowed Steven to get his attention back to the real world. "Of course I can Mr.Keating." Steven stumbled out, Gerard just facepalmed as you looked at your uncle and both of you chuckled. Steven finally noticed the music playing, and he may not listen to music all that often but he didn't recognise. "I really like this song, who sings it?" Steven asked shyly. Your eyes went wide open and your mouth went agape, "Do they not have The Beatles here in the States?! Let me show you them, they're AMAZING!" You grabbed Steven's hand and led him over to the record player. Keating looked at you two and back at Gerard with a smile, knowing that look better than any poet he's ever researched.
Richard Cameron: You two competed against one another several times during debate competitions First debate competition of the year was in a few hours. The two teams were in the respective classrooms preparing for the competition ahead. You had to go use the restroom so you excused yourself and walked over to where the restroom was located. You bumped into someone as you rounded the corner. "I am so sorry, I didn't see you there. Are you okay?" The boy asked. "Yeah I'm perfectly fine, just got a little spooked." You replied with a smile as you made eye contact with the boy in front of you, you blushed. He stuck his hand out with a smile, "Richard Cameron, Welton Academy." You returned the smile and took his hand, "Y/F/N Y/L/N, Hamilton Academy. I look forward to seeing you on the debate court." You shook his hand as you winked and walked toward the bathroom.
Knox Overstreet: You tutor his sister back at home Knox was coming home today, his parents told you that before they left to pick him up and bring him home. You were tutoring his younger sister in English and geography. She wasn't bad by any means, but her parents always believed she could do better. You never pushed her too far because she would always reiterate that she is doing the very best she can. You knew how it was to be pushed passed your breaking point and you would never want to do that to a student you tutor. You two took a break and the front door flung open and the sound of teenage boy filled the hallway. He immediately went upstairs and put his stuff away as his parents came into the kitchen to ask how their daughter was doing. In the middle of the conversation Knox came into the kitchen as well. He immediately stopped in his tracks as he made eye contact with you, you blushed as soon as he smiled. "My my, Knox Overstreet, I hadn't seen you since you started attending Welton. You look dashing if I may say so, growing into a fine young man." You said with a smile. "Wow Y/F/N, you look beautiful yourself. Going to be an amazing woman one day." He said as blushed back at you. "Maybe, Y/N, if you're not too busy you could tutor Knox as well. Make sure he doesn't lose his muster during break." His father chimed in. His sister came in unexpectedly and said, "I think he just needs a tutor in general, I'm pretty sure I'm smarter than him." This earned a chuckle from everyone and a blush from Knox and you shot an empathetic glance his way
Gerard Pitts: You met when you were forced to attend Welton by your father, Mr.Nolan, because your grades were slipping "You are attending Welton and that is final, young lady." Your father practically spat at you. You got up in a huff as he escorted you to your English class. "Mr.Nolan, what brings you in here for today?" Mr.Keating asked with his usual smile. He practically shoved you into the classroom, "This is my daughter Y/N. She's going to be attending here because her grades slipped too low for my standards elsewhere. Don't go easy on her." Mr.Keating shot you an empathetic glance, "You may sit next to Mr.Pitts. And rest assured Mr.Nolan, I will help whip her into shape in no time." Mr.Keating motioned to the empty chair with a smile. You walked to the empty seat and sat down. Gerard could not take his eyes off you. Mr.Keating had everyone work on a poem as he came over to your desk to ask you if everything was alright. Gerard was tuning in. "I don't know anymore My mum didn't even want me to come here. I got one C because my friend passed away and suddenly it's the end of the world for my father. You'd think he would care a little more since I'm his only child, you know?" You ranted, letting a single tear roll down your face. Gerard immediately noticed and got a tissue and gave it to you. "Thank you that was really sweet." You said with a shy smile. "Well, I can't let a pretty girl cry when I'm around." He said with a smile filled with empathy.

CODY CHRISTIAN, CIS MAN, 25, HE/HIM   ⟨  ✽  ⟩   hey, you haven’t bumped into  cameron monroe  lately, have you? they have been living here for the past  seven years  and during that time, locals have gotten to know them as  loyal  &  determined.  a little birdie told me they can be quite  hot headed  &  stubborn  though. explains why they’re an  artist.  they really remind me of  dirty paint brushes, black ripped jeans, flashing neon lights.  if you’re ever looking for them, i bet you can find them around  beans & barley.
stats
Full Name: Cameron Anthony Monroe
Nickname(s): Cam, Monroe
Age: twenty five
Date of Birth: november 5
Gender: cis-male
Face Claim: cody christian Hair Color: brown
Eye Color: blue
Height: 5′8
Weight: 150 lbs
Build: athletic
Pronouns: he/him
Occupation: artist
Father: james monroe Mother: emmeline monroe
Sibling(s): twin sister
History
Cameron and his twin sister were born on november 5 to Emmeline Monroe and James Monroe. Cam’s father was an active-duty military soldier, so he and his sister grew up moving from base to base with their family (by the time cam turned 18, he had lived on 13 different bases).
His entire family was a military family, and from day one, the expectations were clear that cameron would continue that.
When he was young, cam was a clingy child. He wanted to be with someone from his family at all times. He needed to be by them because they were his constants. He also loved the idea of being in the army because he wanted to be just like his dad, and he tried to make him proud.
As he grew older, he grew out of his clinginess, and in turn, it turned into him building walls around himself. He learned to keep a low profile and not get attached to anything because he knew that they were just going to move again. At school and in life, he became quiet and used sarcasm to ward people off. The only exception to this was his sister. She was the only one who he would listen to and be himself around. It was also when he found his passion for art and moved away from the desire to be in the military.
When the boy was about fifteen, he decided to tell his father that he did not want to join the military right out of high school, and his father could not stand the idea. Whenever he looked at cameron, it was with a look of disappointment rather than the pride he became used to. He was completely torn up about it, and as soon as it happened, his walls went back up. He began acting out at school and only trusted a few people outside of his sister to know the real him.
So when he turned eighteen, he was out of there. with the help of his sister, he realized he wanted to be an artist. So, he moved himself to port briar and got his degree art
Today. He is still standoffish when he first meets people, but the few he lets behind his mask see he is genuinely a kind guy.
Personality
Cam likes to make sure no one can see the real him and he’s very good hiding his feelings. he comes off as an asshole but he’s actually a nice guy ( i promise ). but he just has very tough walls around him and shows very few people who he actually is.
he is really bad with emotions also like he just bottles everything up and cannot cope. he also doesn’t know what to do with other people’s emotions so yeah
his only real release is his art which he does as as his career . some of it he sells and some is just for him.
those who manage to get close to him he is super protective over them. they will also get to see she’s dorky, cares a lot about friends, and even a little cocky
Wanted connections
like a couple of people who knows he’s not an ass?? and just be close to him
art friends - people he can talk art with and all that jazz… and be a nerdy little artist
ex girlfriend (can be on good or bad terms idk??)
party friends

My Angel – JJ Maybank x Reader
Summary: your relationship with JJ is still relatively new, but that doesn’t stop you from showing just how much your care about him after his has an episode with his dad.
A/N: this popped into my brain randomly because im in love with fluffy jj, and jj in general. i literally just wanna give him the biggest hug in the world 🥺 this is also my first real obx imagine so lmk what you guys think!!
warnings: mentions of abuse
word count: 1841
It was currently a perfect day in the Outer Banks. 86 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, on your way to meet your friends on the dock. You finally found a time when everyone was off work simultaneously for the first time this week. John B’s boat was practically rotting from not being used in five days.
You fast walked down the hill to get to the meeting spot. As you got closer, you noticed most of the pogues plus Sarah Cameron, the newest addition to the group thanks to John B, all chatting.
“Hey guys!” You exclaimed as you neared them at the end of the dock.
“Hey (y/n)!” Kie smiled and ran up to give you a short hug.
“What’s up (y/n)?” John B asked, giving you a nod.
You shook your head. “Not much. Just excited to finally see you guys!” Which earned smiles from the rest of the group. Everyone was clad in swimsuits, t shirts, and flip flops, signaling that they were more than ready to get this day going. But before you could, you noticed something major was off. “Where’s JJ? You asked looking around for your boyfriend.
“We were gonna ask you the same question.” Pope said.
“That’s so weird. We texted earlier and he was obviously down to come...I assumed he’d be the first one here.” You continued.
“Who knows maybe he’s just running a little late. It wouldn’t be the first time anyway.” Kie smiled and put a hand to your arm. “We can wait a few more minutes.”
You had been friends with all of the pogues for about two years now, pretty much since the week you moved here. However, you and JJ had only been dating for less than a month, so this relationship was still fairly new. You couldn’t help but wonder if maybe he was having doubts about you or your relationship. After that thought passed you wondered if something bad happened to him. JJ is known for having not the cleanest record, much to your dismay, so you couldn’t help but think he was in trouble. As more time passed, the more negative overthinking you did.
You checked your phone for any sign of him, but the only notifications present were from Apple telling you to update your software for the millionth time. The rest of the group had descended into a random conversation, but finally after 10 minutes of waiting for him you decided to speak up.
“Hey guys? I think I might go look for him…” You trailed off, looking in the other direction towards the rest of the island.
“It is pretty weird...JJ isn’t one to miss out on days like these.” John B added. “You want us to come with you?”
You smiled at his offer, but declined. “No it’s fine honestly. You guys go have fun. Don’t let me ruin your day.”
“You could never.” Kie said. “You’re sure?”
You nodded. “I promise it’s okay. I’m just scared something happened. I’m gonna go look for him and maybe we’ll meet up with you guys later if we can.”
Since your relationship with JJ was still so new, you were still learning how to manage spending time with him alone and spending time with the rest of your friends. You felt bad for leaving them because you hadn’t hung out all week, but something was pulling you towards JJ in that moment.
“Sounds good.” Kie finished. “Good luck and hopefully we’ll see you later!”
“Thanks guys.” You smiled one last time before turning to walk back towards where you came from. Your car was parked in a lot close by, so it didn’t take long for you to get in there and gather your thoughts. Where could JJ be? He couldn’t be at work, because he’s been working with Pope and his dad lately, so obviously if Pope was at the dock JJ would be too. The only other place he could be would be...his house?
The second that thought dawned on you, your face sank. His house.
JJ opened up about his home life to you pretty quickly into your relationship. You had known each other for so long before that he felt like he could trust you explicitly. He told you all about how his mom left when he was young, and how his dad is a disgusting physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic. This revelation led to a few tears and more than a few sleepovers at your house.
You backed out of the lot and sped down the streets as fast as you possibly could without it being able to technically count as speeding. Your heart was now pounding at the thought that something bad must have happened today involving his dad.
After a too fast car ride you came up on his street. You parked across the street in front of his house, not even daring to go near the driveway because who knows what his dad would do. You weren’t even completely sure his dad knew you existed.
You felt crazy walking around to the back door dressed in a bikini with nothing but an oversized t-shirt covering you, a messy bun sitting on top of your head, sunglasses behind your ears, and cheap flip flops.
Once you got up to the door, your hand hovered in front of it in a knocking position. Suddenly you were terrified. What if JJ wasn’t even here? What if you were just being a stupid worried clingy girlfriend? What if his dad answered? What would you even do in that situation?
A crazy thought came over you and you decided to forego knocking and reach out for the doorknob instead. You turned it quietly and the door clicked open. You closed it behind you and took a look inside at the house you had only seen a couple times before. Beer bottles lined every open surface. Clothes and dishes were strewn everywhere, medicine bottles sat on the kitchen counters. You bit your lip to keep from tearing up at the sight. The fact that this was the only place the boy who had your heart had to call home broke you.
You walked into the living room and jumped a mile when you saw an adult figure on the couch. Luke Maybank, luckily asleep. Still no sign of JJ.
You walked deeper in the house, down the hall to where you knew JJ’s room was. The door was cracked slightly, and you held your ear up to it. Your heart broke even more when the sound of crying filled your ears. You opened the door and it creaked, causing your boyfriend’s head to snap up in your direction.
“JJ…” You began.
“(Y/N)? What the hell are you doing here-” He said, cutting you off.
No words came out of your mouth for a minute as you took in the sight. He was hunched over sitting on his bed, clutching his side. His shaggy blonde hair looked more oily than normal most likely due to his hands running through it excessively. He had a black eye and a split lip, with random patches of dried blood around his mouth. You had heard about his dad’s horrible parenting, but nothing could have prepared you from seeing its effects in real life for the first time.
Finally you came to your senses. “I was looking for you.” You started. “We were all waiting for you on the dock and when you didn’t show up I just had a feeling something was wrong…God JJ why the fuck didn’t you call me? I would’ve come as soon as I cou-”
“Shh baby. It’s okay. I’m okay.” He said. “C’mere.”
You couldn’t help the tears that welled up in your eyes as you took all of three steps towards him. He wrapped his arms around your torso and pulled you in. Your head rested on his.
“It’s not okay!” You cried out, his hair muffling your voice. He shushed you and started rubbing your back.
“I’m fine sweetheart. You shouldn’t even be here anyways-”
“Will you shut up?” You said, the question coming out harsher than you meant. You quickly pulled away and looked down at him. “Shit- I’m sorry. I didn’t mean...I’m just fucking frustrated that you have to go through this. I can’t stand seeing you like this.”
JJ reached up to wipe the tear that had fallen onto your cheek. “It’s nothing I can’t handle. I promise I’m fine. Go back out with everyone. I’ll catch up later.” He said.
“No.” You shook your head. “We’re going to my house. I’m fixing you up.”
“(y/n)...”
“Either you come with me or I’ll help you here.” You gave him an ultimatum.
He sighed and his head fell forwards on your stomach. He was still sitting on his bed and you stood in between his legs. You grabbed his hand in yours. “Please baby. Let me take care of you.”
“Okay. Your house it is.” You helped him up and walked him out to your car. You even helped him into the passenger seat, much to his dismay. Seeing him like this had you seething inside, you couldn’t help but want to love on him with everything you had.
A short drive to your house later, you walked inside and told him to sit down on the couch. Your parents were both at work and you assumed your older sister was with her own friends. You ran to the bathroom to get bandaids, rubbing alcohol, and an ice pack for his eye.
You sat down with everything and began tending to his cuts. You felt like crying again, but reminded yourself to be strong for him.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” You asked after a few moments of silence.
He shook his head. “There’s nothing to talk about. He’s just an asshole.”
“I wish I could do something more to stop it.”
“You do enough. I don’t deserve you.” He said quietly.
“Stop it. If anything I don’t deserve you.” You replied. You took the ice pack off his face for a minute to look into his eyes fully. “You’re the best part of my life JJ Maybank. When you’re hurting so am I.”
He leaned down to kiss your forehead. “My angel.”
You wrapped your arms around his torso delicately so as to not hurt him. You weren’t sure if words could adequately describe what you were feeling regarding JJ, so you just sat in his embrace. He wrapped his arms around you after a few moments.
“I’m so sorry you have to deal with all of this. I hate making you upset.”
“Not your fault.” You whispered into his shirt. “I would do anything for you. You know that.”
He pushed your head up to his and planted a passionate kiss to your lips. He pulled away and rested his forehead to yours. You ran a gentle hand up and down his side, feeling him get chills as you traced the muscles that hid underneath his soft skin.
“You wanna sleep?” You asked.
“Honestly...yeah.” He said quietly.
You patted his legs twice signaling for him to stand up. You switched positions so you were sitting behind him.
Once he got comfortable in your lap, you started running your hands through his hair and on his cheek. His eyes fluttered closed.
“I got you sunshine. You’re safe with me.”
