1. Atlanta lawyers will rep anyone prosecuted for abortions for free

Attorney Steve Sadow said he is willing to defend any doctor throughout the country free of charge. He will only charge travel expenses if he has to travel long distances.

“If a doctor believes that it is appropriate to violate the law, at least as written, I want to be there to defend them because they need somebody in their corner and that is what I do,” he said Friday, hours after the Supreme Court released its opinion.

2. Boy missing for eight days in Germany found alive in sewer

Eight-year-old Joe, who lives in the city of Oldenburg in northwest Germany, disappeared on 17 June from his front garden, sparking a huge police search.

A passer-by heard a soft whimper coming from the direction of a manhole cover in the early hours and called emergency services. Rescuers rushed to the scene around 200m from his home and found Joe at the bottom of the sewer.

A firefighter entered the sewer to bring him out. The child was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia, but had no major injuries.

3. More Than 200,000 Borrowers Now Qualify for Student Debt Forgiveness

The Department of Education agreed to a $6 billion settlement to cancel debt for 200,000 borrowers. Borrowers will receive a full discharge of their loans, a refund, and credit repair.

An additional 60,000 borrowers will have their cancellation decisions reviewed individually. The settlement stems from a 2019 class action lawsuit, Sweet v. Cardona, which argued many borrower defense claims for loan cancellation were being ignored by the Department of Education.

4. Pride in London: More than a million attend ‘biggest ever parade’

More than a million people have taken part in the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first Pride parade in London. The parade paid homage to the original 1972 march, organised by the Gay Liberation Front (GLF), and saw revellers pass significant sites from the UK’s LGBTQ+ movement.

At the front of the parade, the star of Netflix coming-of-age drama Heartstopper, Joe Locke, said it was an honour to be celebrating “being queer when the world might not be so accepting”.

5. Principal with his students turns Indian school into a green oasis with over 300 plant species

A government primary school in Firozabad’s Keethot village has become a centre of attraction for its lush greenery comprising over 300 species of plants, including a four-foot tall sandalwood tree. Spread over, 5,500 square feet area of school campus, the garden is a result of the efforts of the school headmaster Mohammad Shahid , who with the help of the students, has sown and nurtured plants that bear fruits and flowers, and vegetables used for preparing midday meals for the children.

6. Grand Canyon won’t seek volunteers to kill bison this fall

A bison herd that lives almost exclusively in the northern reaches of Grand Canyon National Park won’t be targeted for lethal removal there this fall.

The park used skilled volunteers selected through a highly competitive and controversial lottery last year to kill bison, part of a toolset to downsize the herd that’s been trampling meadows and archaeological sites on the canyon’s North Rim.

Introducing the sound of gunfire and having people close to the bison was meant to nudge the massive animals back to the adjacent forest where they legally could be hunted. But the efforts had little effect. The park is now working with other agencies and groups on a long-term plan for managing the bison, an animal declared America’s national mammal in 2016 and depicted on the National Park Service logo.

7. Kitten rescued from inside Pepsi vending machine at Walmart store

Firefighters responded to a Walmart store in Tennessee to rescue a kitten heard mewing from inside a Pepsi vending machine. “Crews could hear the kitten crying. They unplugged the machine and removed the cover on the back, but couldn’t see the kitten,” the post said.

The firefighters were able to find another opening in the machine and made visual contact with the feline. The rescuers were able to coax the cat to safety. The post said the kitten was adopted by the employee who originally heard the cat’s cries.

Severe hurricanes may reach as far inland as Tennessee, northern Georgia, and the Carolinas with damaging winds and potential flooding. Being well-prepared for a hurricane is essential for safeguarding your home and family. Consider the following:

Create a Hurricane Preparedness Plan – Develop a comprehensive hurricane preparedness plan that includes evacuation routes, designated shelter locations, and communication strategies for your family. Practice evacuation drills to ensure everyone is familiar with the plan.

Tip: Carry physical/paper maps and printed emergency contact information (mobile device/internet reception may be interrupted for days or weeks).

Build an Emergency Kit (Go Bag) – Assemble an emergency kit containing essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, medications, first aid items, flashlights, batteries, and important documents. Keep the kit in a readily accessible location.

Identification and Important Documents include:

Personal identification (ID, passport, driver’s license)

Emergency contact information

Insurance information

Medical records and prescriptions

Notarized copies of important documents (insurance, birth certificates, marriage certificates, deeds)

Communication Essentials include:

Fully charged cell phone and charger (with adaptor)

Multiple charged device batteries

Portable power bank

Battery-operated or hand-crank radio

Secure Your Home – Reinforce your home’s structural integrity by installing hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows. Trim trees and branches that could pose a threat during high winds. Ensure that doors and windows are securely sealed.

Stay Informed – Monitor weather forecasts and heed evacuation warnings. Stay informed through official channels, weather apps, and emergency broadcasts. Awareness of the storm’s trajectory and intensity is crucial for timely decisions. Consider the following to stay informed:

Flooding – Heavy rainfall associated with hurricanes can lead to severe flooding. Inspect your home for water intrusion, especially in basements and lower levels. Address any drainage issues and consider installing a sump pump.

Storm Surge – Coastal areas are particularly susceptible to storm surges, which can result in widespread flooding. If you live in a coastal region, elevate your home on pilings or consider installing flood barriers to mitigate storm surge impacts.

Post-Hurricane Home and Roof Repair

Tip: Take pictures and shoot video footage during fair weather conditions that establish your home’s condition before a severe weather event.

As highly desirable as SRO programs are, not all agencies have the available resources to commit to such an important assignment. Ultimately, the absence of an embedded law enforcement officer(s) in a school setting means that the response times to reduce/mitigate an emergency situation is greatly affected. In fact, without any presence, no fault of their own, the amount of time for law enforcement to respond and merely arrive on scene is greater than a minute and a half.

Our research and proactive planning has demonstrated the need for a response in 25 second or less to counter and prevent a threatening situation from expanding. A proactive operating presence will shorten reactionary response times and prevent injuries or losses of life. Incorporating into our model of practicality, "2-is-1 and 1-is none" encourages the investment of placing a team of two (2) SPSS operators at educational facilities. This action will significantly improve the overall security signature and prevent situations before it is considered or committed upon. The vetting standards for this position includes a physical readiness test, stringent background investigation and phycological examination. The course of instruction, developed by Raven 22/Harrell Group, is built around a certificated 60-hour SPSS training program providing training in the areas of "Crisis Intervention", "Critical Response", "Deescalation" and" Use of Force" are a few of the class to be taught.

Upon a successful completion of the course, the selective SPSS would be embedded to work within school operations. All course of instruction and standards are modeled around the specific requirements needed to keep everyone on school property and/or school events safe and away from harm.

Outback Steakhouse Kicks Out Uniformed Officer And His Wife

When a uniformed officer took his wife to Outback Steakhouse for a nice evening meal, the couple was shocked and dismayed when the manager kicked them out. However, when it was revealed why they were forced to leave, the restaurant was made to regret the decision. Andrew Ward, a Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) officer, picked up his wife Amanda on a Friday night and decided to take her out to dinner at Outback Steakhouse while in uniform. Little did the couple know that their evening would be ruined by their choice of restaurant. Many law enforcement officers patronize eating establishments while on duty and in uniform. Even though they are taking their assigned break to eat, they are still required to have their firearms on them at all times in case of an emergency. This is the situation Officer Ward found himself in when he took his wife out to dinner. According to Local 3 News, “A Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officer was asked to leave the Outback Steakhouse in Cleveland Friday night because he had his service weapon on him. In a public post on Facebook, Andrew Ward shared about the experience. He said he was asked by a manager to remove his weapon and put it in his vehicle. He explained that he had to have it on his person because he was in uniform.” The manager walked away, made a phone call, then returned and asked both Ward and his wife to leave. The manager said that Outback Steakhouses are “gun-free zones.” Officer Ward went on to further explain the situation. “I don’t blame the manager… but this is ridiculous and we will never go back there ever again,” Ward said on Facebook. “A uniformed Law Enforcement Officer who is sworn to protect and serve the public, is refused service because they have a firearm! I am disgusted and have no other words!!!” In a follow-up Facebook post, Ward shared why the manager confronted him. He says a patron at another table reported being scared for her life. “She said police are shooting people, and she could have gotten shot in the parking lot, and the manager had to her and her husband to their vehicle,” Ward wrote. “We were told it was a policy they don’t allow guns – if we would have known there was a complaint we would not have went anywhere! Seriously, she was scared for her life? We were joking and laughing with our server as we ordered, then prayed. What was scary about that?” Ward said Outback contacted him and apologized. They also gave him a $100 gift card, but this was too little too late for many in the community. According to a local news network, Officer Ward’s Facebook posts went viral and had been shared more than 150,000 times. As the story gained traction in the local media, Outback issued a statement. “We’ve always allowed uniformed law enforcement officers to carry their sidearms while dining with us,” Outback’s spokesperson said. “A manager made a mistake. We have contacted the guest personally and apologized.” Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson also released a statement. “I was very saddened to hear the reports of a law-enforcement officer who was asked to leave a restaurant in this community,” he wrote. “While I truly respect the restaurant for reaching out to the officer, our community must also show support to the men and women who place the badge on their chests every single day in order to protect the establishment in which the officer was asked to leave.” According to News 12, “ is very thankful for the support from the community because he believes it truly helped remedy a situation. He believes the problem has been solved and wants to move on.” After the outpouring of support Officer Ward and his family received via Facebook and in his community, the lawman issued one final statement. “If we move forward and learn from our past mistakes they are no longer mistakes but Lessons!” Ward wrote. “I am not nor will I ever be a perfect man…. there was only one perfect man ever to walk this earth and He died some 2000 years ago to forgive my sins.” And, that’s why stories like this one need to be shared — not to lambaste the restaurant, but rather to inform others because this “mistake” happens all too often. Minnesota's HSRA Leads the Way: Saving the Lives of Youth Via Hip-Hop

The state of Minnesota is leading the way in demonstrating hip-hop's power to shape culture and save lives. Here's what they are doing. HSRA (Highschool of the Recording Arts: Invests in the Future Whitney Houston once crooned, " believed that children were our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them the beauty they possess inside." And in Minnesota, David T.C. Ellis is doing just that. His creation, HSRA, affectionately known as Hip-hop High, stands as a testament to his commitment and the positive outcomes it has yielded. Over the years, Hip-hop High has indeed functioned as a beacon of hope for countless young individuals in Minnesota, making a significant impact on their lives and even, in some cases, saving them. And this is what Hip-hop High has mastered. Hip Hop High School isn't your typical educational institution. It's a public school with a distinctive mission of transforming its students' lives through a uniquely crafted curriculum. According to The 74, "HSRA teaches core subjects through a musical lens, enabling students to develop skills and agency to deal with real-world issues." The program's effectiveness is undeniably clear, and the testimonials of students like Cameron Keys underscore this. In fact, Keys enthusiastically attributes his life's transformation to the institution, going as far as to say it saved him. As The 74 records, according to Keys, "HSRA help put him on a pathway to where he is in life now — living in Tennessee with his wife and working a stable job as a Walmart manager." Ultimately, it's not astonishing to witness such remarkable outcomes. When a project is fueled by genuine passion and unwavering love, the results it produces are unquestionably powerful and impactful. Ellis's Dream: HSRA Interestingly, Ellis didn't initially set out to establish HSRA; rather, it emerged from his heartfelt desire to contribute positively to his community. According to HSRA, in 1996, Ellis endeavored to start a pilot program. It is noted, "Ellis started Studio 4 as a recording production studio." Amazingly, the youth came in droves. Recognizing the thirst in the community and seeing a young populace in need spurred him to stretch. Those seedlings of inspiration eventually led to the development of an "educational pilot program." So, in 1998, what began as a spark was fully manifested. Conceived by Douglas Engelbart and developed by him and colleagues at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), the groundbreaking computer framework known as oN-Line System (NLS), jointly funded by ARPA and the Air Force, evolved throughout the decade. On March 19-20, 2014, 15 teams from around the United States participated in the final event of the DARPA Spectrum Challenge, a competition designed to encourage development of programmable radios that can deliver high-priority transmissions in congested and contested spectrum environments. This event tested conditions directly applicable to military communications and demonstrated that radios can “learn” to coexist and communicate reliably through autonomous sensing and adaptation—paving the way for new spectrum-sharing applications for the Department of Defense and commercial industry. The final event took place at DARPA’s offices in Arlington, Va. After two intense days of competition—in which competitors alternately battled for control of the spectrum and worked together to share the spectrum—teams from Tennessee Technological University and Georgia Tech Research Institute and an independent group that had entered the competition emerged as the overall winners, earning a total of $150,000 in prize money.

The BRIDGES initiative is a pilot effort sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to connect innovation from small companies that traditionally do not work with the United States Government to classified Department of Defense (DoD) research and development (R&D) efforts. Specifically, the goal is to connect innovators directly to the challenging problems that exist in the classified realm and to help develop solutions to those problems. BRIDGES aims to provide companies that demonstrate they can provide innovation and value to the DoD the means to obtain a facility clearance, and interact directly with DoD customers at classified levels.

The DARPA Service Chiefs Fellows Program (SCFP) was established to immerse outstanding military officers and government civilians into imaginative and innovative, fast-paced science and technology research. This three-month fellowship provides participants with insight into cutting-edge technology while potentially facilitating the development of future DARPA technologies.

Fellows from each Service have the opportunity to dive deeply into specific technology development in areas of interest to them and to their respective Service, as well as a chance to understand the breadth of DARPA research. This introduction to the DARPA innovation process allows Fellows to gain valuable research experience and return to the field with an appreciation for the Agency’s role of supporting DoD missions by preventing and creating strategic and technological surprise.

Upon completion of their assignment to SCFP, Fellows serve as informal liaisons between DARPA and the Services, reflecting the close relationships forged during their tenure and the experiential understanding of DARPA's technology development process.

A Season Not To Be Ashamed Of

It's Saturday night, Jan. 21st and I am watching what I thought wouldn't be possible for another two seasons; the New York Giants playing the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the NFL playoffs. Win or lose, I'm still in awe that the Giants have even made it this far, with everyone expecting us to be in a rebuild season with a quarterback that was unwanted here at this point. Here I am, a year later, watching him thrive.

Jan. 11th, 2023 was a changing of the guard and a new start for the New York Giants. Joe Judge had been relieved of his duties as head coach and the coaching search began. The search for a new General Manager was also underway.

On Jan 21st, we hired our new General Manager, Joe Schoen. Schoen previously worked under Brandon Beane for the Buffalo Bills since 2017, serving as their assistant general manager.

On Jan. 28th, we got our coach. Brian Daboll, who spent the previous season with the Buffalo Bills as their Offensive Coordinator. All I knew of him was how he molded Buffalo Bills' quarterback, Josh Allen into the elite playmaker he is today. The front office was excited.

Of course the NY Giants fanbase, myself included, kept our expectations low, not in need of searching for any great miracle necessarily. We were all mentally and emotionally ready for a rebuild season. After all, we were still living with the consequence of that infamous boat trip pic from 2016, right before the 1st round of the playoffs.

Then Draft Day came. The Giants emerged from the 2022 Draft with 11 players. Initially, the Giants went into Thursday night with nine selections, but following two trades in the second round which saw the Giants go from No. 36 to No. 43, the team added two extra picks with No. 114 and No. 146. I was impressed by the resourcefulness of our GM, but, I wouldn't dare allow myself to get too excited.

Then, the season began. No expectations. No desires. No worries. Not even an ounce of hope from me. This was more like, "Okay guys, let's just get this season over with.". I was even trying to anticipate what sort of wheelin' and dealin' the Giants could get into for next year's NFL Draft and Free Agency. First game on the road, against the Tennessee Titans. A game we weren't expected to win....but we did.

As the season rolled on, it was Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones literally carrying this team offensively, with the defense stepping up and getting better every game. Of course, I was still skeptical, even with an unexpected win streak at the beginning of the season.

And, we rolled on, finishing the regular season with a 9-7-1 record. I was still in disbelief that we even made it to the playoffs, after having the expectation. The first round of the playoffs comes against the Minnesota Vikings, with wide receivers that would put ours to shame. Regardless, we won. It was at this moment that I could believe again.

Now, we have a future to look forward to, regardless of the results from the Divisional round of this year's playoffs. It really did take the right coach and an intelligent GM to make all the difference.

This was a season that was definitely nothing to be ashamed about.
