Lewis Hamilton lost the 2021 drivers championship when he was passed by Max Verstappen on the final lap of the season. Verstappen was able to make the pass after the FIA F1 race director Michael Masi organised a final lap restart in violation of the rules. Masi, who lost his job over the controversy, was accused by some of breaking the rules to arrange the restart in order to create a more dramatic finish to the race. Today’s race at Monza finished behind the Safety Car as an operation to move Daniel Ricciardo’s stricken McLaren out of the way took longer than expected. Wolff praised race director Niels Wittich for following the rules correctly and ending the race behind the Safety Car. “I’m really satisfied to see that there is a race director and colleagues that apply the regs against the pressure of the media and the pressure of the fans and everybody to just be in breach of the regulations,” he said. “At least Abu Dhabi, in that sense, gave the FIA more robust confidence to apply the regulations.” Wolff said there can be no doubt the FIA’s Safety Car procedure was followed correctly. “It’s very clear,” he said. “There is rules and they are written down. And from my perspective, whether I am Abu Dhabi, traumatised or not, these rules have been followed to the dot today. “There was a car on track, there was marshals and a crane out there. That’s why they didn’t let anybody overtake. And then there was not enough time to restart the race once all the cars caught up.” Gallery: 2022 Italian Grand Prix in pictures However Wolff said he would not be against changing the rules to give the race director more flexibility to avoid concluding grands prix behind the Safety Car. “If one is not happy with the regulations and you want to have a big bang show and two laps of racing and mayhem, I’m absolutely up for it,” he said. “But they need to change the regulations. So I don’t think we should complain about anything that happened because this is the rules.” Wolff believes it wouldn’t be difficult to alter the rules in that way. “I think we need to say ‘do we want to have a race finishing under green?’ And then reverse-engineer it from there. “So you can say ‘five or ten laps to the end, if we have a Safety Car, let’s red-flag it and make sure that we are racing at the end’. If that’s in the regs, good. Way back in like. Last year so really not that far, a friend of mine I dragged into Transformers hell was like "haha Team Red but Robots" and we both laughed about it and I scribbled designs and then we promptly forgot

My art for the Team Red Reverse Big Bang 2021!

I've had this piece of art in the back of my brain for a long, long time (inspired by the subway variant of the "My Three Personalities"), and it was a joy not only to get to draw it, but also to give it to @deniigi and say, "Buddy, you know as much about what's going on here as I do, good luck." Their fic based on the art is peak chaotic Team Red, and definitely worth checking out!

Like all good storms, there is a calm.

The stage has been set in a classic Hoenn fashion; seats, thousands of them, surrounding an inset circle. The smell of seawater fills the room, matched to the layer several centimeters thick on the stage, briney and soft and loved by so many. A platform, made roughly of rope and beeswax and wood, floats where it is tied to a post on one edge of the stage.

There’s a curious group of people in the audience above that dock. A hundred or so sun-loved men and women, each donning either a bandana or a scrap of blue fabric wrapped around their arm, hold signs and praise aloft in the air. There’s a prevailing symbol, the distinct A known to them as the symbol of the Aogiri family; but, of course, most simply know it as Team Aqua’s logo. Still, they’re being polite for a band of often land-bound pirates.

Quietly, in the brief span of time where the lights above are not quite turned on, two Pokemon enter the stage. It’s probably a bit strange to see a Ludicolo dressed as a traditional Shino priest, but the Swampert next to him looks equally strange in the red robes of traditional Terranid design. They take their place on the dock, the Ludicolo shaking leaves out of its hat to decorate the stage.

[00:30] The music starts off with a literal bang. A taiko drum calls out, slowly and rhythmically at first. Like the beginning stages of thunder, the sky lights up with each bang. As it does so, the rest of the cast appears; first comes a Luvdisc, swimming as best as she can through the meager surf. Then comes a Sharpedo, shaped like a person; she’s dressed in the traditional salt-crusted garb of the Cetanids, her feet bare and her hair left long. Her tail leaves wave as she passes, following the beat of the drum.

[00:57] The drum crashes once more, breaking into quick thunder. With it comes another member of the cast; barely recognizable under traditional robes and heavy makeup, the Pirate drifts out of the green room, with his Mega Trident held by his side. He’s wearing a furisode, most unlike a man his age, one that was passed down through his family. It’s his Mother’s and, until his child reaches a certain age, it’s his. There are few hangups about a man wearing a robe like this for the Cetanids, they who prioritize having someone to embody Kyogre in their plays over whether or not it counts as cross-dressing.

Silk shines blue and opalescent as he makes his way to the center of the stage, following the crash of thunder. He looks like Kyogre, skin painted blue and white to match the details of his kimono. His mask, his symbol in Contests, looks a little out of place. Gilded silver does not match all the white and gold in his outfit. But this is a tradition too and he thinks Juan will forgive him for the fashion faux-pas.

[01:04] The drums begin in earnest. He spins, slowly, carefully, pointing his Trident at the dock embodying the land. Those of the land, the Swampert and Ludicolo, threaten with displays of teeth and tossed leaves. Those of the sea, the Sharpedo and Luvdisc, reply in turn with glares and splashes of water. Each step and turn follows the drums, growing stronger and stronger.

[01:20] Until, finally, another drum joins. Dual tones split the Sea and Land into two movements. A Leaf Storm begins in the Ludicolo’s hat, whirling until it sends blades into the sea. Water splurts from the Luvdisc’s mouth until it becomes a Hydro Pump, surprising for her size. Both are loose, carefully, ensnaring and twirling around the other. The focus is on them as they follow a path from side to side.

[01:40] With the inclusion of a wood instrument comes the Swampert, rocks and ground pulling from the walls as they clatter into the makeshift sea. The Sharpedo dodges these things, quick even with her legs, as she blocks them from hitting their (similarly makeshift) Kyogre with lifted Surfs. As the rocks (encouraged by Earth Power, controlled with extreme care) encircle the Pirate, so does she; the Sharpedo knocks every rock away, her waves lifting to the beat of the drum.

[02:00] With the twang of a shamisen comes an increase in activity. Land works with land, sea works with sea. The same moves merge effortlessly, a show of rock and leaf contesting with Water that rises and crashes. The same dance is prevalent, tho’ it grows in tempo. Slowly, the Pirate lifts his Trident. As he does, the Sea grows stronger; movements begin to, slowly, overpower the other.

[02:25] Words join the music. He hopes they’ll be unintelligible over the speakers, as they don’t make much sense in this context. This is probably the point where someone in the audience recognizes where this music comes from and releases a hoot of laughter (one that is more delighted than amused, maybe; what 80s nerd doesn’t like Akira, after all?). The Pirate does his best to ignore that.

[02:32] The next words come with the improvement of the Land. A word, meaning nothing, repeats and calls out; and with it, the Swampert and Ludicolo grow strong, shaking off the sleepiness of Summer and growing into the frantic nature of Fall. They push back, beginning to overwhelm, as the Ludicolo leads a dance growing in tempo. The Swampert does his best to keep up, though a careful eye might notice his struggle. It’s hard to match with a Pokemon like this.

As this dance goes on, the dock begins to build up with leaves and bits of ground. The shape is intentionally, growing more and more like Hoenn’s distinctive volcano; beloved Mount Chimney, red leaves falling onto the top to look like glimmers of lava.

[03:06] As the music slows, so does the movements, and so to the reverse. More care is taken here, twirling leaf and water and ground into spirals and arcs. These are Pokemon who live for Contests, even if the Sharpedo’s glare and snap is distinctly violent. Of them all, she leads; her steps follow a dance inspired by those wielded by Cetanids who wanted to calm or worsen the sea. She and her Kyogre, her trainer in makeup that she’s trying not to laugh at, work perfectly in harmony (though, admittingly, he does lag a bit in that outfit. Silk is heavy when it’s wet).

[03:40] Slowly, the sky builds. Leaves float there, like the dappling of clouds. They cast shadow and light upon the water, like a summer storm sends thunder across hundreds of miles. The Swampert takes up the fighting, wielding the Earth with a strength that belays practice, as the Ludicolo steps back. There’s a small chest on the dock, carefully hidden, that it goes to.

It pulls out a piece of blue ‘crystal’, one as big as a beachball. Contests mean having to make things larger for everyone to see and, while the Pirate doesn’t much care for one-time-use props, Juan did a very good job constructing a fake Blue Orb.

[04:48] When Ludicolo lifts the Orb, the Pirate recoils. He curls up on himself, as if to hide from it. The people of the Sea notice this and fight back, but their water weakens. It trickles, rather than gushes. They fight, fight, fight and dance, but they can’t go against the Water being twisted up and around the Orb. With a heave, the false Kyogre collapses, face-down in the water.

Delighted, those of the land riot. The leaves that were left floating above the stage come down, fluttering prettily, to cover the sea. Those of the Sea recoil and hide within them, a hard measure to ask for when one is a shark nearly as big as her trainer. The land dances, happy as can be. They follow the beat, of course, and Ludicolo still leads.

Slowly, strangely, the water recedes. Those of the land do not notice it, nor how their dock rises until a cover of leaves, as all that is left of the sea around them, is but a mere centimeter of water. A puddle, one that the acting Kyogre crawls from and reaches for his Trident. There’s a glow there, in that tiny crystal, as bright as the light in the Blue Orb.

As the small group in the audience begins to chant (Rainbow Falls, Rainbow Falls, Rainbow Falls) he lifts the trident and stands. The people of the land watch him, their Blue Orb threatening, but…

But he lifts his Trident nonetheless.

[06:03] With a crack of wood, something rises from beneath the land, building from the hump that grew during the last act. An enormous Kyogre, one shaped like a Pokemon, rises from the stage. It’s made of seawater, one that drips and denies leaves as it grows larger and floats higher. Inside is the Sharpedo, Rainbows soaking her as her form changes into something larger, more dangerous. Her Surf encircles them, as the Luvdisc beside her provides shape with Aqua Ring.

Pitching a roll towards the lights fills the room with Rainbows, casting that enormous Kyogre in the hues of humanity’s gift. The section of audience reserved for the Pirate’s curious party of supporters cheer, reaching from the stand to drag their hands through the Kyogre as it encircles the stage.

As it reaches the highest point, it stops for a second. The actor playing Kyogre below looks up at it and, with a bang of his Trident against the floor, the massive water bubble pops. Water is sprayed everywhere, soaking the audience in warm seawater, and the Pirate jolts forward to catch his Sharpedo before she falls.

The music tapers off. The show is done. As is tradition, the actors step forward and take a bow; something the Sharpedo, still in her trainer’s arms, has a bit of trouble with. With a delighted wave, they all return back to the Green Room.

And, as they do, Archie lifts his head at his competitors seated there and laughs. His shark laughs too, as nasty as he.. “Good luck beating that, nerds.”

Astronomers find the oldest, most distant galaxy to date

Since time immemorial, philosophers and scholars have contemplated the beginning of time and even tried to determine when all things began. It’s only been in the age of modern astronomy that we’ve come close to answering that question with a fair degree of certainty.

According to the most widely-accepted cosmological models, the Universe began with the Bang Bang roughly 13.8 billion years ago.

Even so, astronomers are still uncertain about what the early Universe looked like since this period coincided with the cosmic “Dark Ages”. Therefore, astronomers keep pushing the limits of their instruments to see when the earliest galaxies formed.

Thanks to new research by an international team of astronomers, the oldest and most distant galaxy observed in our Universe to date (GN-z11) has been identified.

The team, whose research was recently published in the journal Nature Astronomy, was led by Linhua Jiang of the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics and Prof. Nobunari Kashikawa of the University of Tokyo.

They were joined by researchers from the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science, the Steward Observatory, the Geneva Observatory, Peking University, and the University of Tokyo.

Simply put, the cosmic Dark Ages began about 370 thousand years after the Big Bang and continued for another 1 billion years.

At this time, the only light sources were either the photons released before – which is still detectable today as the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) – and those released by neutral hydrogen atoms. The light of these photons is so shifted due to the expansion of the Universe that they are invisible to us today.

This effect is known as “redshift,” where the wavelength of light is elongated (or “shift” towards the red end of the spectrum) as it passes through the ever-expanding cosmos on its way to reach us.

For objects moving closer to our galaxy, the effect is reversed, with the wavelength shortening and shifting towards the blue end of the spectrum (aka. “blueshift”).

For nearly a century, astronomers have used these effects to determine the distance of galaxies and the rate at which the Universe is expanding. In this case, the research team used the Keck I telescope at Maunakea, Hawaii, to measure the redshift of GN-z11 to determine its distance.

The results they obtained indicated that it is the farthest (and oldest) galaxy ever observed. As Kashikawa explained in a University of Tokyo press release:

“From previous studies, the galaxy GN-z11 seems to be the farthest detectable galaxy from us, at 13.4 billion light years, or 134 nonillion kilometers (that’s 134 followed by 30 zeros). But measuring and verifying such a distance is not an easy task.”

Specifically, the team examined the carbon emissions lines coming from GN-z11, which were in the ultraviolet range when they left the galaxy and were shifted by a factor of 10 – to the infrared (0.2 micrometers) – by the time it reached Earth.

This level of redshift indicates that this galaxy existed as observed roughly 13.4 billion years ago – aka just 400 million years after the Big Bang.

At this distance, GN-z11 is so far that it defines the very boundary of the observable Universe itself! While this galaxy had been observed in the past (by Hubble), it took the resolving power and spectroscopic capabilities of the Keck Observatory to make accurate measurements.

This was performed as part of the Multi-Object Spectrograph for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE) survey, which captured the emission lines from GN-z11 in detail.

This allowed the team to produce distance estimates for this galaxy that were improved by a factor of 100 over any measurements that were previously made. Said Kashikawa:

“The Hubble Space Telescope detected the signature multiple times in the spectrum of GN-z11. However, even the Hubble cannot resolve ultraviolet emission lines to the degree we needed. So we turned to a more up-to-date ground-based spectrograph, an instrument to measure emission lines, called MOSFIRE, which is mounted to the Keck I telescope in Hawaii.”

If subsequent observations can confirm the results of this latest study, then the astronomers can say with certainty that GN-z11 is the farthest galaxy ever observed. Through the study of objects like this one, astronomers hope to be able to shed light on a period of cosmic history when the Universe was just a few hundred millions of years old.

This period coincides with the Universe was beginning to emerge from the “Dark Ages”, when the first stars and galaxies formed and filled the early Universe with visible light.

By studying these, astronomers hope to learn more about how the large-scale structures of the Universe subsequently evolved. This will be assisted by next-generation telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) – scheduled to launch on 31 October, 2021.

These instruments will even allow astronomers to be able to study the the “Dark Ages” itself, a time when the only non-CMB light was the spin line of neutral hydrogen – in the far microwave wavelength (21 cm).

To be able to probe the very beginnings of the Universe itself and watch as the first stars and galaxies form. What a time an exciting that will be!

The observations that made this research possible were conducted under the time exchange program between the Keck Observatory and the Subaru Telescope on Maunakea, Hawaii.

In The Pit Lane – Headaches Piling Up For Dietrich Mateschitz

Dr Helmet Marko and Christian Horner are always quoted as saying Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz will make the final decisions on all the important issues.

So, the first item in his in-tray is Honda’s departure from F1.

Red Bull have stated their preferred option would be to take over Honda’s engine from 2022 onwards, but the rules would have to be frozen to make it affordable.

Horner told Sky Sports “The more we look, there really only is one option that works. And that would be to try and agree something with Honda where we could take on the IP [intellectual property] for the Honda engine, but of course that would have to be dependent on the regulations.

“It would only make sense for an independent engine supplier, as Red Bull would effectively be if there was a freeze. It would just be impossible to fund the kind of development spend that currently goes on with these engines.”

Horner said it would be “criminal” to see the Honda engines otherwise left languishing “on a shelf somewhere in a Japanese warehouse.”

Step forward Renault and Ferrari who have expressed their opposition to a freeze of Formula 1’s engine regulations from 2022 with Renaults Cyril Abiteboul saying, “I am against freezing the engines. We have no intention to stop what could be a very important platform for us. We do not accept it,”

This will annoy Mateschitz as this leaves him with the prospect of writing a very large cheque to continue with Honda engines.

Next in the in-tray is the problem with Verstappen, that’s Jos, not Max.

Jos no doubt is irritating Mateschitz with his ongoing comments.

First, we had Jos wading in when he told De Telegraaf that it is “high time that Red Bull delivered a car his lad can go to war amid the sudden uncertain future.

“A lot has been said by a lot of people outside of Red Bull but that has no value to us. It’s time for Red Bull to produce a championship-winning car.”

Then he plunged in on the driver debate says that if he was running Red Bull, Nico Hulkenberg would replace Alex Albon and become his son Max’s teammate in 2021.

Telling Mateschitz he needs to produce a championship-winning car and which driver to employ is exactly the kind of interference that is bound to raise his blood pressure.

Mateschitz faces the possibility Max may jump ship, the prospect of this becomes more of a reality if Lewis decides his time in F1 is up, something he has ruminated on recently, and Max gets the prized Mercedes seat.

Mateschitz must know if Lewis shocks F1 and hangs up his helmet after winning his seventh title aka Nico Rosberg style then Max is gone, breaking his contract in the process.

It is not any less of a headache for Mateschitz when it comes to Albon, both Marko and Horner have been uncharacteristically supportive of Albon with Marko telling German-language motorsport-total.com. “We’ll give him some more time.

“Albon has until the last race in Abu Dhabi to prove himself and then we will make an internal decision about whether he can stay or whether we are looking for someone from outside.”

This has left the paddock confused but it may well be Mateschitz is in a private battle of wills with his long-term Red Bull Thai business partner Chaleo Yoovidhya who is most likely backing British born Thai driver Albon.

Is Yoovidhya playing hardball with Mateschitz adding to his stress levels?

Next in the in-tray is “H.R.” issues with Marko failing to complete his ‘working as a team member’ course.

He must have got under Horner’s skin after the Honda announcement when he told Speedweek, “We work in all directions because we knew about Honda’s decision for a long time. “Mr Horner is a team principal, but not involved in strategic matters. Mr. Mateschitz and I have known for a long time.”

He has also undermined Horner when he contradicted him over whether there was a performance clause in Verstappen’s contract, Horner says no, Marko says yes!

Then there is the looming threat that design guru Adrian Newey will jump ship and head to Aston Martin leaving Mateschitz with another headache.

So, with the loss of his engine supplier, the risk of losing his star driver, and aggro from all corners no doubt he will with his $26.9bn fortune decamp to his private Fiji Island complete with its $1.7m submarine to ponder his next move.

Part of the decision-making process will be, does the Red Bull team give him enough bang for his bucks or has the sponsorship runs its course?

He may well decide it would be better to allocate the money to his extensive portfolio of Red Bull sports teams which include MotoGP teams Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Red Bull KTM Tech 3, Skoda Motorsport rally team, football clubs RB Leipzig, FC Red Bull Salzburg, FC Liefering, Red Bull Brasil, Red Bull Bragantio, New York Red Bull’s, the Red Bull sailing team, hockey teams EC Red Bull Salzburg, and EHC Red Bull Munchen, you get the picture.

Red Bull also has an extensive network of athletes which they financially support including ski jumpers, snowboarders, skiers, golfers, squash players, tennis players, and professional chess player Hikaru Nakamura!

The Red Bull chequebook comes out to host a myriad of events from cliff diving to the soapbox races so Red Bull is not short of opportunities to spend their marketing dollar on.

So, has Mateschitz had enough, and will he decide to sell?

Mateschitz knows a thing or two about making a deal and will realise to obtain a premium price for Red Bull he has to hold back on selling the Scuderia Alpha Tauri team at the same time so the sale is not perceived as a fire sale.

The suiter with the deepest pockets and probably the greatest desire is Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.

The Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has big F1 ambitions witnessed by their global sponsorship of F1 through state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco and the arrival of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix for the first time next year with a night race on the streets of the country’s second city Jeddah.

The icing on the cake would be the formation of the Saudi Aramco F1 team.

With the sale complete the Red Bull driver academy would be wound up and Marko will in a role reversal be on the receiving end of bad news regarding his employment with Mateschitz no doubt assuring him, “it’s nothing personal its business.”
