As an Arab who grew up in the 90’s and 2000’s, western animated shows provided a lot of escapism for me.
I didn’t have any friends growing up, I was constantly getting bullied for being into geeky things, and I never felt like I “fit in.”
Raven from Teen Titans was a huge comfort character for me. And it truly sucks knowing that a person who worked on something that means the world to you is an objectively awful piece of shit with no redeeming qualities.
Yes, it is possible to “Separate the art from the artist” but that’s easier said than done.
It’s kinda hard for me to go back to any of the shows that she’s worked on and not feel angry at the fact that a vile racist was given a massive platform.
And what really drives me up the wall is that none of her colleagues are calling out her behavior out of fear of being blacklisted. Because fuck forbid we stop giving racists who are campaigning for a literal genocide a platform, am I right?!
The only difference between voice actors and on camera actors is that voice actors spend a couple of decades hiding their bigotry and racism before going mask off. While all the on camera folks can’t stop doing stupid shit.
Fuck Tara Strong.
Fuck Hollywood.
Free Palestine.

This is a little tribute to the brilliance of Tara Strong, and features only a handful of her characters that were prominent in my childhood. (Melody was my first encounter with her talents!)

I'm usually an elder scrolls/fallout blog but I feel like I can rant here too so:
I'm just really, genuinely upset for Charles Martinet rn. I know he's said before that voicing Mario can be really straining on his voice, but that doesn't mean we should be using star-power to recast what is, in my opinion, his role.
And I know he hasn't said a huge amount about the casting of the film, but Tara Strong's tweets and his responses to them feel like there's at least some melancholy. I can't imagine doing a job for so many years only to be pushed aside for a mainstream face actor who can't voice act for shit to fill the role.
I've not interacted with Charles Martinet much, but the very few interactions we've had/I've seen? He's been nothing but a lovely and kind soul, and he lives and breathes Mario! It's so rare for someone to be so passionate about a role for so long, and I can't help but feel ike this is such an insult to such a kind man who genuinely enjoys his job.
A thought I've seen a lot is that the 'traditional' Mario voice would be really grating for a full movie - I agree! But that's the beauty of voice actors! Martinet has such an amazing range (insert Skyrim Paarthurnax fact here), and he would easily be able to work with his original voice for the character(s) and mellow them for prolonged speech. He is a great voice actor. And the same can't be said for his replacement.
Maybe I'm just projecting many emotions onto this and making a mountain out of a molehill. But VA's being replaced by 'mainstream' celebrities is already a very iffy thing to do, and it almost feels personal when it's such an iconic role and the original actor is so passionate about the art. Its been bugging me since the cast was originally announced and it hurts even more after seeing Charles' responses on twitter yesterday.
All we can hope is that Charles Martinet is living his best life and knows that many people appreciate his work. But that doesn't change the fact that trying to pull in an audience with a celebrity in this case is a very shitty thing to do.

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Batgirl (New Adventures)
Having proven herself as a highly capable crimefighter, Batgirl was invited by Batman to become a more fully integrated partner in his crimefighting operations.  Batman had long since deduced Batgirl’s secret identity as Barbara Gordon and he revealed his own identity as Bruce Wayne to her.
This created a significant conflict between Barbara and Dick Grayson.  The two had been involved romantically yet neither knew each others' secret identities as Batgirl and Robin.  Dick was furious that Bruce hid the matter from him and thought it was too dangerous for her to be allowed to continue operating as Batgirl.  This anger ultimately resulted in the break up of Barbara and Dick’s relationship as well as Dick relinquishing his role as Robin.
With Robin gone, Batman became even more reliant on Batgirl’s aide and she was more than up to the challenge.  She excelled under Batman’s tutelage in combat training and escape artistry and was especially proficient in utilizing the Bat-Computer.  Barbara’s skills for programming and data-analysis far surpassed those of Batman and this talent proved an invaluable resource in numerous cases.
Batman came to have the utmost faith in Batgirl’s capabilities.  So much so that he was often willing to leave the city in her hands when business took him elsewhere as well as when he began splitting time with the newly formed Justice League.
Along with missions alongside Batman, Batgirl took on many cases herself and additionally shared adventures with Superman’s cousin, Supergirl.  Batgirl and Supergirl became terrific friends as well as a truly formidable force for justice.
Actresses Mary Kay Bergman and Tara Strong provided the voice for Batgirl with the heroine initially appearing in the thirty-eighth episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Heart of Steel.’

On today’s episode of “Tara Strong continues to be an objectively awful person with no redeeming qualities.”
Jokes aside, as a Middle Eastern guy who grew up watching a lot of Tara Strong’s shows, this shit makes me want to vomit.
Strong has always been a controversial figure, she was spouting out anti vax conspiracies back in 2018, she mocks anyone who isn’t vegan, and let’s not forget about the time she promoted an NFT scam and got super pissed at everyone who called her out on her shit.
So it wasn’t really all that surprising to find out she’s a raging Islamophobe.
What’s even more depressing is the fact that none of her colleagues are speaking out against this, because fuck forbid they end losing work for calling out blatant bigotry, am I right?
