meal ideas!
low energy ("do not ask me to do any prep work at all, so help me god")
mozzerella cheese wrapped in pepperoni ("pizza tacos"!)
hummus and pretzels or naan (putting the naan in the microwave for like 10 seconds...heavenly)
canned chili (with shredded cheese and sour cream if you have it! boom done!)
instant miso soup (warm and lovely! put tofu in it for protein!)
cheese and cured meat, olives, canned fish, crackers, dried fruit, or whatever easy "charcuterie" type items you like
alternate bites of apple and spoonfulls of peanut butter (mixing honey or chocolate chips to the peanut butter is my favorite)
a "deconstructed sandwich": bites of lunch meat, pickles, cheese, cherry tomato, etc (I love roast beef and white cheddar for this)
yogurt and granola or fruit
put frozen potstickers + frozen edamame in the steamer/rice cooker, chill elsewhere with a timer set, then boom
tortilla chips + canned refried beans + cherry tomatoes + cilantro + jarred salsa con queso (or warm shredded cheese on top of the chips in the microwave for 30 seconds)
bagel + cream cheese + lox
microwave scrambled eggs (add things like green onion, soy sauce, or anything else you like!)
cottage cheese and fruit (mixed together or just on the side)
bowl of shredded rotisserie chicken + buffalo sauce + a bit of mayo + green onion (use a kitchen scissors to cut them right in!)
medium energy ("I'll boil water but don't ask me to chop shit")
boiled eggs and fresh veggies (put a little salt on top of the eggs!)
buttered noodles (my go-to nausea meal, it has never failed me. ideas of things to add: frozen peas, imitation crab, roasted garlic)
baked potato with toppings (I like cheese, bacon, broccoli, green onion, and sour cream)
quesadilla (add some canned beans, cilantro, or avocado!)
pot roast (requires a lot of time but not a lot of actual work. I love it with peas!)
cuban sandwich (bread, swiss, pickle, mustard, ham... my favorite thing to panini-ify by far)
pan-fried tofu with scallion sauce (this sauce goes well with everything and tofu is no exception)
pancakes or waffles! (I love mine with jam)
ham, pickle, and cream cheese roll-ups
fried eggs (with toast and lots of butter...so comforting)
fruit smoothie (bananas, frozen strawberries, yogurt...or whatever!)
I hate salad but could write essays on this copycat olive garden salad (throw it in a bowl! chopping required if you use onion)
spaghetti (controversial maybe but angel hair > spaghetti noodles)
pasta salad (olives broccoli fresh mozerella... those little mini pepperonis... yeah)
stir-fried thai garlic shrimp (I like using the mini frozen salad shrimps, it's easy! use jarred minced garlic to avoid chopping!)
tuna mayo onigiri
slow cooker ribs
buffalo chicken wrap (or any number of other wrap options! shred pre-cooked rotisserie chicken to make it easier)
if your local grocery store sells pre-cooked gyro strips, that can turn into an easy wrap with store-bought pita & tzatziki with tomatoes and onions!
couscous and chickpeas
tortellini + pasta sauce + spinach
high energy ("I don't mind chopping some things up!")
stuffed shells with spinach
chicken and roasted garlic (oh my god.....one of my all time favorites)
beef tacos (I like mine with cilantro and onion, and when I'm feeling especially high energy I love a tomatillo salsa)
chicken alfredo
tom kha gai (a thai soup and my absolute favorite! you just need access to galangal)
lasagna! (freezes well and then boom! low energy meal for later)
pad thai! (not as hard as you'd think, as long as you have access to tamarind paste!)
potstickers! (this is a lovely group activity if you want to cook with housemates!)
rice and beans
bang bang shrimp (ogughfhgfuh I love it. you can also do bang bang tofu!)
minestrone soup (so many nice veggies!)
fried rice (put whatever you have on hand in there! broccoli, peas, carrot, and beef is my favorite combo)
broccoli cheddar soup
spring rolls and peanut sauce
skewers (such as beef, onion, zucchini, bell pepper... you don't need a grill, oven works!)
roasted turkey with garlic parmesean asparagus
pork chop with mashed potatoes
panang curry
chicken gnocchi soup (use store bought gnocchi or make your own if you have a high energy day!)
bibimbap (super customizable depending on what veggies you like best)
butter chicken
plus! things that have helped me meal plan:
whenever you think of a meal you'd like to make, take 3 seconds to google search it, take a screenshot of the image results, and put it in a "food ideas" folder. instant visual menu!
the concept of "meal prepping" makes me recoil but I've learned that it can simply mean preparing shredded chicken, boiled eggs, or some other simple protein that you can customize throughout the week. shredded chicken can turn into wraps, salads, pasta dishes, etc... you don't have to meal prep yourself into the same meal all week!
when I have difficulty working up an appetite, I'll scroll through my favorite restaurant menus! there might be some foods I can't make at home, but many times they're very simple to recreate because the ingredients are literally listed!

this but with Leah who hates it when you are more than two feet away from her because she needs you right by her side + reader who is always getting sidetracked while shopping and stops everywhere driving her insane
sidetracked II l.williamson
"-and then on wednesday we have to..." leah trailed off as she realised you were no longer walking by her. she quickly turned around, bumping into various shoppers with mumbled apologies as she finally spotted you.
"oi! babe please stop dawdling." your girlfriend sighed, gesturing for you to follow her. "but look lee! new flavours." you pointed to the packets of two minute ramen that had caught your attention, leah swallowing the sarcastic remark which so badly wanted to be spat from her mouth.
"that's nice love. but we really need to get this done, your mums coming over for dinner remember?" leah forced a smile as you again joined her, the blondes hands grabbing the shopping basket off the floor as you resumed walking.
"how could i forget? you invited her without consulting me!" you huffed as you gave your girlfriend a withering side eye. "you ask my mum over all the time without consulting me!" leah argued back, nudging you along with her elbow as she noticed you start to become sidetracked by something on the shelves.
"its always while you're at training leah that doesn't count." you scoffed, grabbing a few packets of pasta at her request. "no! put them in properly." the blonde warned as you lingered behind her intending to toss them in like basketballs once she'd given you some distance to shoot.
"baby you are seriously no fun to go shopping with." you grumbled dumping the pasta into the basket as the older girl pinched you for the comment. "shopping is an errand it's not supposed to be fun love." leah chastised tiredly, again grabbing the back of your top and tugging you back up as you squatted down to read something.
"when you're in love everything can be made fun! lots of couples enjoy doing errands like shopping together, stroppy." you poked her sides as the taller girl scowled at you which only widened your smile of amusement, knowing very well how much leah detested grabbing groceries.
"what time's the match again on sunday?" you asked, the blonde still not playing but back in full training so you both knew it was only a matter of time. "well kick off's at four but i'd like to get there by three at the latest so i can watch the girls-" leah again stopped mid answer noticing you were no longer beside her.
spinning around she spotted you hunched over with your eyebrows furrowed, reading the cooking instructions on a box of taco shells. "in for ten and out for ten leah, you are calm and you will stay calm." leah closed her eyes and mumbled herself an affirmation as she made her way back toward you, her frustration levels rapidly rising.
"can you believe these only take two minutes to cook? i guess they're like giant corn chips after all." you shrugged, eyes still scanning the box before leah wordlessly took it out of your hands and put it back on the shelf.
she held out her hand again without a word as you took it, linking your fingers as you filled the silence with your usual chatter, your girlfriend humming every now and then as she continued to grab what was on your list.
"can you go and get a dozen eggs please sweets?" leah sighed, nodding toward the other end of the fridges as you ducked off to grab them. leah meanwhile stocked up ham, moaning in annoyance as her favorite brand was out and she'd need to trial another.
"oh for fuck sakes where's she gone now?" leah glanced to where she'd sent you, noticing eggs but a distinct lack of you as she hurried off with a groan.
she checked aisle after aisle, but still nothing, and with each one her irritation grew more and more.
until finally she saw the back of your head and charged toward you. hearing footsteps come closer you glanced up, a smile curling onto your lips seeing the blonde hurrying over.
"lee baby look they have-" you started as your girlfriend reached you, taking the eggs out of your hand before placing the basket on the ground. "what are you..." you frowned as she messed around with her keys which hung off her jeans.
"there! now, you can no longer be side tracked or run away." the taller girl hooked the two of you together by your belt loops using the carabiner on her keys. "i wasn't running away! i don't need this." you huffed as she fixed you with a stern glare normally only reserved for her team mates when in captain mode.
"leah this is ridiculous." you whined, trying to unhook it as she smacked your hands away. "considering it has taken us over an hour to grab about twenty things babe, yes you do." leah huffed, grabbing the basket in one hand and grabbing your own with her other, tugging you along with her as you smiled awkwardly to those giving you strange looks.
"leah this is embarrassing." you hissed, again trying to unhook the two of you as she once more smacked at your hands. "oh but babe are you forgetting something?" leah smirked as the two of you finally reached the check out counter.
"when you're in love everything can be made fun, no?"

The sound of keys and your door unlocking was enough to wake you up. From the horror stories that Javier had told you and the amount of tragedies you witnessed had trained you to be highly alert and prepared for any kind of danger. You rubbed your eyes, trying to rub the sleep away. When the door swung open, you heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of Javier. Then it occured to you that he is supposed to be overseas now.
Javier tried his best to look presentable. He didn’t want to make you worry. The lack of blood staining his clothes was a bonus but he doubted the eyebags and the various stray cuts would help soothe your nerves. “Cariño.” He started, his eyes struggling to meet yours.
“You should have told me you’ll be back early. I would have saved some dinner for you.” He was back, in one piece. You have learnt to be appreciative of that at the very least. Your eyes scanned his figure, no blood, no visible injuries.
Javier watched helplessly as you entered the kitchen, eyes searching for some food for him. He didn’t dare step into the apartment, he would be staining your clean floors with his sins. You busied yourself inside the kitchen, refusing to look at Javier despite how much you had missed him. From the forlorn and solemn look on his face, you doubted he would be back for long. You knew once you had him in your arms again you would refuse to let go.
“Would pasta do? I ran out of taco shells to make your favorite.” You called out to him. Javier hesitantly removed his shoes at the door. “Yes, thank you.” He stated, staring at his dirty shoes, tearing at the soles from how much activity he does in it.
A breath hitched in your throat. Javier hands were on your hips, his nose buried in your shoulder. “I miss you” your hands didn’t stop moving as you uttered a similar reply to him. Javier’s grip on you tightened, your cold response was scaring him. After everything he had been through, the last thing he wanted was to come back to is a breakup. Not after he finally overcame his fear of losing someone and decided to open up his heart to you.
You turned the fire off, moving to the side to place the noodles onto a plate for Javier. Javier reached out for the plate, taking the cutlery he needed. His other free hand immediately held your hand. “Eat with me please.” He pleaded, his brown eyes boring into yours. You smiled, you knew you were distancing yourself, it was a defence mechanism of yours. It was the whole reason why you didn’t want to go into a relationship, you hated feeling vulnerable, hated having one person that could determine your mood, the power he had to make you go through hell. Javier saw through the smile immediately, his heart tightening even more as he gently  led you to the small table you had in your living room.
Patience is never the word to describe Javier Peña. Your vague responses, cold reactions to him, it was driving him beyond crazy. However, he knew you well enough to know that if he wanted to get to the bottom of this matter, he had to be patient, had to let you open up yourself. So he concentrated on the pasta before him, filling his hunger with the delicious pasta you had cooked for him. He always admired you for your culinary skills.
“You couldn’t have chosen a shittier day to come back.” Javier’s head perked up eagerly at the sound of your voice. “Had the most draining day and now you’re at my door when I was just about to bury myself in paperwork.” You gestured to the stack of papers left on your desk. “Tomorrow, once I drop off these paperwork I should be able to spend some time with you.” You grinned, happier at the prospect of spending time with him. Your grin faltered when you caught sight of Javier’s grimace.
Javier tried his best not to frown. Hiding his face behind the glass of water you had poured for him upon finishing his food. He took a deep breath, studying your features for a while. God, he missed you but time was never on his side. You fidgeted with your hands nervously, “Spill it Javier.” You demanded. Javier swallowed, you could read him like a book.
“I’m so sorry cariño but I have a flight to catch at 7am.” He admitted. His eyes remain fixated on yours, afraid that he’ll miss something. You blinked, pursing your lips slightly, trying your best to hide your disappointment. That means that you’ll wake up to an empty bed yet again and spend the next few days worrying about him.
   “I figured”
Those two words might as well have been a punch to his gut. He swallowed the lump in his throat. With only two words, he realised what had gone wrong.
Time is a luxury that Javier couldn’t afford. His job demanded him to be ready on call 24/7. It was one of the major reasons why he didn’t see the appeal of committing to anything. You understood that, you knew from the various complaints that Connie told you about Steve’s outrageous work hours. Yet, Connie has always complained about Steve with a shine in her eyes and an understanding smile. You wished you could say that Javier’s work hours didn’t bother you. Especially when your own love language is quality time.
“Once everything’s over, I swear I’ll make it up to you.” Javier promised. Honestly, he didn’t know what to say to make you feel better. He never had to explain himself to the various women he brought home to accompany him on lonely nights. Your silence only scared him even more, it was like you were slipping from his fingers. “Talk to me.” He pleaded with those brown eyes of his.
“The narcos are a lucky bunch of motherfuckers.” You laughed, “I should start trafficking drugs.” Javier frowned, he knew you were joking but this joke hit a little too close for him. He wouldn’t wish upon his worst enemy to be part of this messy chaotic war of drugs and he desperately did his best to shield you against it. Hearing those words from you, you might as well have told him to his face that he wasn’t making a difference and that he was just wasting his life away.
Those words were meant to hurt. You hated yourself for it but you just couldn’t break the habit. You knew you were pushing him away by pushing his buttons. You knew how much he tried to give you the relationship you deserved, you were being selfish and you knew that. However those words left your lips before your mind even could process it. Your heart clenched st the sight of Javier. His eyebrows was furrowed, his jaw clenched tightly and his hands curled into fists at his side. Javier was losing his patience, your words hit him in a sore spot.
“I’m sorry, I’m not-“ you tried to apologise but Javier simply stood up. He ran his hands through his hair before he put on the jacket that he had left hanging on the chair. He took out a cigarette and lit it up with a lighter in the kitchen. The sound of your door slamming shut resounded through out the apartment. You closed your eyes, trying your very best to not shed tears, it’s your fault, you always sabotaged the good things you have in your life. You glanced at the door, vision blurring with tears. Javier had promised to quit smoking but it seemed he had picked up on the habit again considering how he readily had a pack of cigarettes in his jacket.
Javier Peña haunted your dreams that night. He always did. Especially on nights when you missed him dearly, especially today when you had pushed him far enough you were convinced he wouldn’t be coming back soon.
“Once I’m clean, healthy and free from this narcos business. I’ll make you mine. With a ring and a wedding and everything I can offer.” He promised once when he was in bed with you. Those words felt like decades ago compared to now. He already picked up the habit of smoking again, what’s stopping him from going back to his old ways completely?
There it is, the doubt and overthinking that caused you to self sabotage every time. You trusted him and love him with all your heart and yet, you couldn’t help these thoughts, couldn’t help the distrust that formed despite him giving you no reason to doubt him.
The empty side of the bed that you woke up to didn’t help.
Although the note that was stuck to the front of your fridge door made you feel like a fool for even feeling and thinking the way you did.
Wait for me to come home to you. - Javi
