Casting Call: That Vampire Show Season 2!
Tumblr media
Our fiction podcast about being a fan, being a creator, and what happens when the two sides meet is coming back for a second season! We're casting for a few new voices to join the returning cast.
That Vampire Show follows Kat Wright, a high school senior who is obsessed with the hit TV show, “Bloodlines.” After winning a fan fiction writing contest for the show, Kat is given the chance to visit set and meet the cast and crew. When the trip doesn’t go as planned — and she and the creator of the show, Warren Young, have a major fight on set — Kat’s life and the future of “Bloodlines” both spiral out of control. As Kat and Warren try to get their lives back to normal, they’ll clash with each other, their friends, and the entire internet in a fandom war neither of them intended to start.
As this is the second season of an ongoing show, please make sure you are familiar with the events, characters, and style of season one. You can find all links to That Vampire Show season 1 here.
We're casting for the following roles:
CORA: (she/her, late 30s), The founder of a new fandom based start up that Kat works for. Cora is constantly projecting a cool, calm demeanor; an elder millennial might even use the term “Girl Boss,” though Cora would cringe at the title. Cora has a background in film production, and has left the industry to start an app that caters to fans around the world. She’s unlearning the shame of being a fan, and leaning into the cringe factor of being loudly nerdy. Overall, she’s incredibly passionate about her work, and making the next generation of fans feel safe and seen, a feeling she never had growing up.
BROOKLYN: (she/her, 21), A fan artist by night, computer programmer by day, and Callum Rainier’s number one fan. Brooklyn and Kat have been internet mutuals for years, and have bonded over their love for “Bloodlines.” Now, Brooklyn works for the same start up as Kat. Brooklyn works as a coder, is blunt but caring, and has a sharp sense of humor. She believes in the power of fandom, so much so that she has left her senior year of college to work for Cora’s company.
MAYA: (she/her, 20s) A magical shopkeeper and healer, Maya hails from a long family line destined to protect the town of Baker. This means that she often finds herself helping Bex after a night of fighting the supernatural, and helping the other creatures of Baker. The shop sells to both sides of the supernatural war, and Maya and the rest of her family attempt to remain neutral, as hard as it may be.  This is a role from “Bloodlines,” the show within “That Vampire Show.” Please listen to previous episodes of season 1 to hear the tone and style we are looking for.
For the below roles, preference will be given to actors who feel comfortable voicing multiple characters. Please feel free to record as many of the roles as you feel comfortable with, and indicate any accents or voices you are comfortable performing in in the casting form below.
CON EMPLOYEE: (Open gender casting, 20-40s) Short and to the point, underpaid and used to the convention machine. Professional and helpful, but not particularly warm.
EXEC: (Open gender casting, 30-50s) Network Executive for “Bloodlines.” Focused on the bottom line, but has worked with Warren for six years.
CONTENT CREATOR: (Open gender casting, 18-25) Tik Tok / YouTube style content creators. Please feel free to improvise around the provided dialogue.
If you're interested in submitting, please click here to view the audition material. Auditions are due by 11:59 PST on May 15th, 2023.

Tumblr media
American business magazine, Forbes, in its 2023 list of 25 richest people in the world, featured Bernard Arnault on the No. 1 spot, followed by Twitter Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk.
In its previous list in 2022, Musk was on the No. 1 spot.
Forbes described the drop of Musk from the top spot as ” this year’s second-biggest loser”, adding that “Elon Musk, had it worse.”
For Jeff Bezos, fortune knocked him from number. 2 in the world in 2022 to No. 3 this year as Amazon shares crashed by 38 per cent.
So This Happened (202) Reviews Lagos Bizman’s Arraignment Over Wife’s Death, Others | Punch
Musk lost his title of the world’s richest person after his pricey purchase of Twitter, which he funded in part by the sale of Tesla shares, helping to spook investors. Musk, who is worth $39 billion less than a year ago, is now No. 2.

Also, among the top 25, two billionaires — Zhang Yiming, Changpeng Zhao lost their spots and were unable to make it on the list for this year.
Yiming, the founder of Tik Tok-parent Bytedance, dropped one place, from No. 25 to No. 26, as his embattled company has taken a haircut from investors while Zhao, Binance founder, known as CZ, fell from No. 19 last year all the way to No. 167 amid the crypto winter.

I guess I should introduce myself. My name is M. I am in my 20s and I am a queer woman. I realized I was queer when I was about 25, so not too long ago. And I think if I were a younger person today, with access to more queer media, I might have realized I was queer earlier. Representation matters!!  In the 90s/early 2000s television and movies I didn’t see representation of women loving women (wlw)  who represented who I was. No hate to the butch/masc community, but that was all I saw as a kid, and I thought that was how I had to look like and sound like to like other women. Since I didn’t see myself represented in the “lesbian stereotypical” look as a kid, I convinced myself I was straight.  In addition to that, I did not know there were different sexualities besides straight or gay. I didn’t even know being bisexual was an option. Thanks to recent representation of bisexuals in TV shows like Killing Eve, The 100, Broad City, High Fidelity and Station Eleven that have represented bisexuals, I realized what my sexuality was later on in life. As a somewhat quiet and shy person, I also appreciate the way these shows reveal their characters are bisexual. I have never vibed with “coming out” and most of the time I don’t think I need to. I love when there is a casual line here or there, a look across a counter that lasts a little longer than would in a platonic relationship, a reference to an ex-girlfriend and ex-boyfriend, or funny montage scenes between previous failed relationships to reveal that a character is bisexual. Or in Broad City’s unique and not so casual manor of introducing Ilana as a bisexual woman, all while never making a big deal out of it. It is the casual queerness that I love the most and one that I can relate to as well. No hate to anyone who does want to make a big deal out of their coming out story, slay.
Anyways, enough about me. I am writing this silly, goofy letter about Warrior Nun. A silly, goofy little show from your platform, a show with a bisexual woman main character and a lesbisch main character who end up falling in love. Do I have other things I could be doing right now? In fact, there are many things – (make a to do list with numbers - funny)to shop for a secret santa gift for a coworker by morning, to have lesson plans ready for the week I get back to school would be nice, to finish reading Blood in the Water would be educational, and maybe to spend time learning a new language (porque pienso que es muy importante que poder hablar dos o mas idiomas - that was without google translate* and I need the study hours, obviously). But here I am writing a letter I have been thinking about writing since I joined the Warrior Nun fandom a short time ago. As I started watching Warrior Nun, the Tik Tok algorithm caught on and the Ava and Beatrice (a.k.a. Avatrice) fan edits have taken over my FYP. I don’t want to mislead you, I am not upset by this, but I would not like to divulge the actual number of edits I have watched. The number is probably obscene and I, myself, have lost count. I’m a 90s baby whose formative teen years were spent watching mega pixelated fan edits on youtube, back before “ships” and “ship names” were even a thing. I digress, back to Netflix and Warrior Nun. Through the beloved comment section of these beautifully crafted fan edits of Avatrice, I found that many fans were nervous that Netflix would not renew the show. I was curious as to why these fans were so nervous. Surely if shows like Outer Banks, Jessica Jones, Heartbreaker, and Atypical can get renewed for at least 3 seasons, then so too could Warrior Nun (I add in these shows for different reasons, for I know Outer Banks is probably one of the biggest shows/most completed viewed shows Netflix has currently...It is here for other reasons). Especially with a story that is not all the way done, as season 2 ends on a cliffhanger. And then, December 13, 2022, it was released that y’all, in fact have canceled Warrior Nun. This was a blow for the queer community, especially for lesbians and bisexuals for multiple reasons.
If you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ardent ally, then you know that a lot of queer stories are sad. Heart wrenching, bawl your eyes out, ponder your existence for a couple weeks kind of sad. I don’t know if this is because queer communities have an inherent sadness in us from the multitude societal reasons and prosecustions, instutional bias against homosexuality, or familial pressures to stay in the closet, or compulsory heterosexuality and a greif for time lost. As a queer person, and someone who consumes a lot of media, I don’t mind sad stuff. My spotify wrapped described my music taste as melancholic yearning, so I can appreciate the sad stuff. Sometimes though, a happy ending for a queer couple would be nice. I can’t handle another Portrait of a Lady on Fire or Haunting at Hill House: Bly Manor. Those hit me hard. I still tear up everytime I see a random video or picture of Dani and Jamie. Not only are a lot of queer stories rooted in trauma and sadness, but we also tend to lose our characters to stray bullets, cancer, or falling through a portal. There is a reason the tv trope “Kill Your Gays” is a thing.
I have loved television my whole life. My first love is soccer, but I can say that without a doubt, my second love is TV. I watch a lot of television and have since I was a kid. As a recently self discovered queer person, I started consuming a lot of queer media later in life and in fact can testify that queer characters do come to untimely deaths often. Yes, characters die in shows, and it can add to the story, or a character needs to be written off for contractual reasons, but when the representation of the LGBTQ+ community is significantly smaller in television and movies, those deaths of queer characters mean significantly more to the people who see themselves represented in the character. I can admit that numbers of queer characters in television is increasing, especially when you look at numbers for streaming services alone. But it is more than just seeing yourself as a man or a woman and seeing deaths in the gender perspective. When I see a death of a queer character it cuts deeper, I feel it more. I can give two personal experiences with queer deaths that I still think about almost everyday, and I am sure any queer person has a similar experience.
During the COVID lockdown, I took on the mighty task of watching The 100. There were six seasons at the time, with a 7th season coming out in the fall. I did not know at the time that there was a queer romance between two main characters, Clarke and Lexa, but it was a lovely surprise. It was a short lovely surprise. Spoiler alert: Lexa dies by a stray bullet shortly after Clarke and Lexa admit feelings for each other. The death was sudden and unexpected. It left viewers when it came out and for anyone currently streaming on Netflix with an empty feeling in a futile death. Unfortunately, this is not the only queer death that is upsetting because it felt like the death was meaningless. Most recently and probably the worst, sorry another spoiler, is Villanelle’s death in the Killing Eve series finale. I won’t get all the way into the season 4 debacle, but again, shortly after the wlw couple finally admit feelings for each other, and viewers get to see a little of their relationship blossom for a whopping 4 minutes of screen time, Villanelle comes to her untimely end: shot in the back multiple times… under murky water…by a sniper. I’ll just let that one sit. When Villanelle died, it felt like a part of me died. I know, a bit dramatic, but I am a cancer and destined to be sad and tortured. I don’t think a TV character has meant as much to me as Villanelle did. I truly cannot rewatch the first season (shout out to the genius and god that is Phoebe Waller Bridge) without thinking about the ending. If you work at Netflix, I assume then you must like television or movies, a lot. And I am going to also assume that if that is the case, then it is safe to say that y’all also appreciate characters and fall in love with characters. They become a part of your routine, eat dinner with you, fly in planes with you, go on road trips with you, and can be a bonding topic for friends and family. TV characters can deeply mean something to fans. I would like to say that queer communities especially hold on to their characters, if only for that small representation.
I can also testify that some of the queer relationships end on good terms - no one dies! YAY! My only complaint is that the screen time of these female queer relationships is short - Korra and Asami, Catra and Adora, Sterling and April, and Emily and Sue, to name a few (didn’t mean to rhyme, please don’t get the ick). I’ll take what I can get I guess, but it would be so much cooler if we got to see these relationships last longer than a tik tok video. Imagine only watching Derrick and Meredith getting together for the last 5 minutes of an imagined Grey’s Anatomy series finale (LoL because that show will never end). It would be a travesty for romance if we didn’t get to see that relationship last as long as it did on screen. Sadly, after most of queer women couples admit feelings for each to each other, television shows are canceled. Shows we have lost just recently include: Killing Eve, Paper Girls, Warrior Nun (or maybe not, wink), Gentleman Jack, Teenage Bounty Hunters (this one I will never understand its cancellation), The Wilds, First Kill, Atypical, and those were just the ones I watched. Some I can understand, others it is a bit confusing. Especially when writing and acting is on par or far above other shows that have received renewals.
Sorry for being so long-winded earlier because this is why we are really here. The renewal of Warrior Nun. I know y’all have already canceled the show and it is a long shot for a reversal decision, but it has been done before. Looking at the Chuck and Roswell fans. So this is my attempt to change y’alls mind. I hate to say it, I’m sorry, but you have let this show end on the two worst things for the queer community - a short glimpse of a queer relationship and the kill your gays trope. Our goodbye to Ava is now with her death which shortly came after her confession to Bea of her feelings, to which Bea returned the feelings. I know, I know, I know. I. Know. The end credit scene gives hope that maybe Ava survives and she and Bea will meet up somewhere to have another dance party in Switzerland with lemon drop shots and maybe save the world from a holy war. But as of today, I can only hope and imagine. As fans, we would love another two or three seasons, but would probably settle for a 3rd and final season. A third season we know is the end, that gives us another chance to see ourselves represented, that gives a queer relationship the screen time it deserves, and a chance to say goodbye when we know its the end for sure. To be frank, this show is on par writing wise with Outer Banks, but acting wise better - ALBA and KRISTINA, are you kidding me? Future powerhouses in whatever projects they pursue. And these two actors are representing a lesbian character of color and a bisexual woman. Representation matters! This show is also one of the best syfy shows I have watched. It has the perfect amount of heart, and plot, and comedy, and tears, and cheese. Ass kicking nuns and a mystical halo that allows its bearer to heal, fly, and pulse punch? I love it. The stunt scenes are also 10/10. Two actors who do a lot of their stunts and learn the choreography?? And you aren’t on a Marvel set or anything?? I was impressed when I learned Alba and Kristina did a lot of their stunts and fight sequences. Warrior Nun’s characters are diverse in their backgrounds and are not perfect humans. They have learning experiences and character arcs that have transformed on screen in its short two seasons. These characters are relatable and lovable. Not to mention Warrior Nun got around 58 million viewing hours, was in the top 10 shows for 3 weeks, and ranks as one of the highest critic and audience ranked shows on Rotten Tomatoes. All of which it managed to do with $0 spent on promotion for season 2. Can you really blame them for viewings not being bigger? Y’all started promoting Stranger Things 5 like 2 years in advance. Are they even filming yet? And I already know about it. Yes, I realize the comparison, it is not lost on me. Heartstopper got somewhere around the same hours viewed and ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact Warrior Nun’s ratings, as of now, are higher on Rotten Tomatoes. Heartstopper, however, got renewed for two whole seasons, while Warrior Nun got the axe. I’m just saying, the acting and writing are on the same level. And I am a Heartstopper fan, but I would be remiss for not comparing the two.
If you were to bring back a show like Warrior Nun, I can’t promise a viewership the size of Stranger Things, but I could promise you a devout group of fans who will continue to watch the show as long as streaming services are our foray of watching television.  When there is one good wlw story, trust me, we will come back – for the small glances, the stares, the fights, the love, the hand grazes***. A heavily casted women show? Bonus points – yay feminism. A multilingual show? Bonus points round two - thank you. Bilingualism is cool! Polyglots are cool (hey, Alba Bauptista)! That last point might be really niche.  I know y’all like viewer completion rates over there, and I am not sure of Warrior Nun’s completion rate, but we wlw also love completion rates. And we would really like some of our characters’ stories to have completed endings. Pls help. Anyways, my last plea is to give fans of all ages (or younger 18+ because it is TV-MA)  a show that represents a healthy wlw relationship. Don’t let their main queer media option be The L Word. Like, I love that show, but have you seen it? All 70 episodes in all their 90s/early 2000s glory? The renewal is not much better, and now that Bette (shoutout Jennifer Beale)**** has stepped aside, really what is the point of watching. Yet, I still tune in every Friday. Small sigh in bisexual who needs more queer content.  Lastly, I will throw in the classic lines: “I don’t normally do this,” “I don’t ask to talk to managers,”  and “I don’t usually send my food back'' - I usually roll with whatever is presented to me. I didn’t even write a letter for my favorite TV shows of all time, Killing Eve or Game of Thrones, series finales whom most of the viewership can agree the endings were terrible on a whole different scale. I did, however, feel compelled to write a letter for Warrior Nun. Give Ava and Bea a chance, give representation for woman loving woman relationships, and give fans a chance to say bye on better terms. Whelp, that is all I have. Cheers if you read this and cheers if you did not, it is a bit long. Yeesh.*****
In this life or the next,
M
*I may have looked up a word or two…
**Also, sorry for using the word fandom so much, it doesn't sound like a word anymore.
*** In reference to the hands, please look up the scene of Mr. Darcy helping Elizabeth into the chariot in Pride and Prejudice, the Kiera Knightly version. The power this scene still holds on me is unreal.
****Also also, sorry for all the shoutouts, but I am a big fan girl over here
*****Oh, and sorry for poor grammar and punctuation. It has been a minute since I have been in school and I am no writer, nor have I ever been. Please ignore any egregious errors

Honky-Tonk Country Traditionalist Ben Fugate &; The Burning Trash Band Announce New Self-Titled EP
Tumblr media
Honky-tonk country traditionalist and Appalachian singer-songwriter Ben Fugate & The Burning Trash Band are excited to announce their new eight song self-titled EP from Louisville-based sonaBLAST! Records, due out on Friday, April 12. Leading up to that release date, the Eastern Kentucky sextet will release the EP’s first two singles, a rerecording of Fugate’s signature song “Dream Song #1” on February 09, followed by the quirky tale of running into the law on “County Fuzz” on March 08, the latter which Fugate is planning to shoot his first ever music video for. “This album is a big departure from my garage days with just one mic,” said Fugate. “We aimed to reflect our unique sound, while drawing inspiration from country legends, and I believe we’ve captured that essence!” Proudly hailing from Hazard, Kentucky, Fugate first began amassing a sizable following on his Tik Tok channel in 2020 by just simply singing a number of classic country and southern rock song favorites, along with a few of his originals. In 2021 Fugate released his debut EP by Sonder House, Pronounced Appa-Latch-Uh, where the title track has garnered more than 100,000 spins on Spotify, firmly solidifying a growing interest among his listeners and fans. In 2021, Fugate was discovered by Louisville-based Entrepreneur, Community Organizer, Filmmaker and sonaBLAST! Records founder Gill Holland. Holland, who has played a role in the musical careers of other Kentucky recording artists like Jack Harlow and Ben Sollee, also saw the raw, natural talent in the Appalachian country songwriter and invited him to Louisville’s La La Land recording studio to bring his self-written song-tales to pristine audio perfection. Record release shows planned throughout Kentucky in Louisville, Hazard & Harlan: Fugate and his band will celebrate the release of the new EP with a series of shows in Kentucky. The first will be on Thursday, April 11, 7 pm ET at The Monarch Music & Arts Community (1318 Bardstown Rd., Louisville), and then on Friday, April 12, 8 pm ET at the VFW Post #7387 (1700 N Main Street, Hazard) in his hometown of Hazard. The following week they’ll perform on April 20 at Harlan County Beer Company (120 E. Central St., Harlan). Admission is Free and open to the public for these events. “I’m thrilled to host these release shows in my hometown, Harlan and Louisville,” Fugate said. “Both Hazard and Louisville have been pivotal in our success, so it feels only fitting to bring the celebration to where it all began for us!” Tracklisting & Songwriters: 1. “Dream Song #1” (Ben Fugate, Kevin Howard) - “Til’ Death Do Us Part” (Ben Fugate) - “County Fuzz” (Ben Fugate, Kevin Howard) - “Take Your Love” (Ben Fugate) - “Lovesick Over You” (Ben Fugate) - “Impossible” (Ben Fugate) - “Tick’s Blues” (Derek Mullins) - “Dream Song #2” (Ben Fugate, Kevin Howard) EP name: Self-titled Audio release date: April 12, 2024 Video release date: April TBA (“County Fuzz”) Audio producer: Anne Gauthier at La La Land Studios; Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering Pre-Save/Buy/Stream: onerpm.link/282416597085 Shows + Promotional Appearances: FEB 17 – 123 Pleasant St. / Morgantown, W.V. MAR 09 – Pat’s Snack Bar / Manchester, Ky. APR 11 – WAVE Country with Dawn Gee appearance (WAVE-TV) / Louisville, Ky. APR 11 – The Monarch Music & Arts Community / Louisville, Ky. APR 12 – VFW Post #7387 / Hazard, Ky. APR 20 – Harlan County Beer Company / Harlan, Ky. ** Ben’s most up-to-date show and appearance schedule also available on his BandsInTown About Ben Fugate: Ben Fugate is the product of many things: the rural Southeastern Kentucky landscape he calls home, the belting of gospel vocals behind shoddy guitar amplifiers at the Pentecostal church he spent most Sundays, and the hardships that come with being a young adult in a town he loves, which both time and the rest of the world have seemingly passed by. Ben chose the path of music from an early age, donning the famous studded apparel of Elvis Presley and impersonating at his family gatherings as a young boy, playing Lynyrd Skynyrd songs to an amphitheater of his high school peers in talent shows, and forming his first band after graduation, spending all his time in a sweltering garage with his buddies coming up with melodies and singing every John Mellencamp song he knew. The influences Ben draws from, range greatly. From the high twanged vocal acrobatics of The Osborne Brothers, or the heart-tugging slow country warbles of Vern Gosdin. The influence of Joe Diffie, Hank Williams, Keith Whitley, George Jones, Travis Tritt, Bob Seger, Eagles, and Charlie Daniels are all evident in the music that Ben makes. However, he understands that he’s not those influences, but like any great artist, Ben is merely a vessel that channels all the great emotional highs and lows across the vast history of country music and makes them his own. This is before accounting for his equally incredible group, The Burning Trash Band, a band of music vets who always display their tight guitar work and clock-like rhythm section both in shows and in the booth. Ben Fugate and The Burning Trash Band have only been a collective for a few years, and they have been constantly working towards honing their sound, adjusting melodies and delivery, and obsessively messing with tone. What Ben and his band of honky-tonk heroes seek to achieve is none other than their own perfect vision of what country music is to them. And with every show, every record, every practice, every lyric, and every broken guitar string, they come that much closer. Read the full article

who are ahead of the curve .

"Take a certain item in the store for US$70 as an example. The customer finally paid only US$18, and Tik  Tok subsidized US$58. At the same time, the next-day air freight was HE Tuber US$42. Tik Tok discounted the shipping fee to only US$20, and the order discount subsidies.” RAY said that high subsidies drive high sales, and many Tik Tok experts have taken the initiative to apply for sample cooperation,
but now the free samples are out of stock
“Byte launched a fully managed model in the US region in August, attracting more than 200,000 merchants to enter. Taking the home furnishing category as an example, the subsidy for large promotions is as high as 90%, while the fully managed model has only been in operation for a month. The daily turnover has increased from one million U.S. dollars to about two million U.S. dollars," TK Lei, founder of Chuhai, said. In addition to the price advantage of full hosting, Tik Tok also supports 90-day no-reason returns and exchanges.
“Crazy” high subsidies also bring high traffic.
According to Byte official data, TikTokshop achieved breakthrough growth in the US market through Black Friday, with GMV reaching US$61.2 million, a month-on-month increase of 131%, of which Black Friday US market orders (November 14th - November 20th) increased by 205% %, the British market (November 13-November 19) increased by 142%.
And when the alphabet came to the Tik Tok headquarters in Guangzhou, unlike SHEIN and Temu, which are only one subway stop away, both in Panyu District, Guangzhou, the Tik Tok office building is some distance away from SHEIN and Temu, located in Pazhou, and is still standing nearby It is surrounded by office buildings such as Xiaomi and Gome, and the arrival of Byte has also quickly raised the rent prices nearby. "Before Byte came, the price of a single room was 700-800 yuan, and now it has risen to 1,700 yuan." A person close to Byte said.
However, compared with Pinduoduo employees who "walked with the wind" during Black Friday this year, the insider said that "except for +1 flying here and there every day," as front-line employees, they were "not too busy."

I'm gonna be honest I was a bit disappointed by the Barbie movie. The cinematography was great and I loved the interactions we saw of Barbie with Real World women. But my criticisms are far longer.
I found the pacing to be weird either lingering on scenes that I did enjoy as it gave time to take the movie in and think about it's concepts to repeated jokes one after another with no real time to process or laugh at the jokes, you know like a bad Tik Tok.
The subtlety was nonexistent which I can understand why some people liked that. But for me it felt like having someone explain feminist points to me that I already knew and had a good grasp of but had no way of telling this person 'Yes, I know, I've lived this too'. It also felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted to cater to people who wouldn't know these feminist points or to people who did know and had lived these points.
It also felt very repetitive like when they were unbrainwashing the other Barbies instead of repeating what they had just told Stereotypical Barbie and had been saying the entire movie they could have had it been a montage. Hell have scenes of the unbrainwashing spliced in between Ken's song.
Speaking of Ken while I did love Ken's part in the movie and honestly found Ken's bits to the movie most fun, I wish we'd had more time with Barbie. For a movie called Barbie and about Barbie it felt rather Ken-centric. Which I understand what they were going for. However I feel like it took away some of the messaging of the movie and was more counter productive.
I also wish we'd gotten more time with Gloria and her daughter, more time with the female characters in general. My favorite parts were Barbie with the founder of Mattel and her interaction with the older woman, THAT felt far more impactful to me then having someone explaining the feminist concepts of the movie to me. We know Barbie has a community around her in Barbie Land we see it repeatedly. But I feel like we got no time to see what female communities in the Real World are like. We got very little time for Barbie to form her community in the Real World. And I think THAT is a very important aspect of feminism hell of being HUMAN that should be addressed more often, the need and importance of community.
Then the ending of Barbie going to a Gynecologist being their portrayal of becoming a 'Real Woman' felt really transphobic to me. Like they were going "Look she's a REAL WOMAN now cause she has a VAGINA!" like congrats Barbie but lots of woman don't have vaginas and they're real women. I think a far better and more impactful ending would have been her sitting down at the dinner table with Gloria's family for a nice meal or a conversation or maybe to look at apartments. A moment to show her move from Barbie society to Real World Society and how she still has a support group with her and how important the concept of community and socialization is in both Barbie's World AND the Real World.
All in all it was good, it was fun. I'd watch it again. But it's not one of my top ten movies I wouldn't even call it that 'progressive'. Cause it's progressive moments are undermined by it's pitfalls into radical feminism rather then genuine love for humanity or genuine love for one another.

Poverty is Being Imposed on Us: Who Remains First on the Forbes List
Elon Musk almost lost his position as the richest man in the world. The Binance CEO dropped to 185th place and the FTX co-founders fell off the list altogether.
This year, according to Forbes, the top spot remains the American entrepreneur, owner of Tesla and SpaceX engineer Elon Musk whose fortune is estimated at $267 billion.
Tumblr media
Bernard Arnault is firmly in second place. The owner of a French transnational company, which manages such famous brands as Louis Vuitton, Guerlain, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Hennessy, has already topped the list. Actually, in the past Mr. Arnault became only the richest man in Europe.
The leaders were followed by Jeff Bezos and Larry Ellison. If Bezos, for obvious reasons, remains in the top three, then Larry got here thanks to a successful deal between the American corporation Oracle and the Beijing company ByteDance. It was ByteDance that until recently was the main owner of the Tik-Tok streaming platform.
While Musk could be forgiven for losing his leadership because Twitter cost him $44 billion, how CZ fell to the bottom remains a mystery to me. Is the “black swan” already waiting for its time?
However, much more interesting is the fact that the capitalization of the crypto market at the beginning of September is just over $1 trillion and the total wealth of the richest people on the planet is estimated at $12.2 trillion. Moreover, the list included only billionaires, and if you count the number of millionaires, the final figure will be strikingly different from the original one.

ASSESSMENT 1: Hard News Story
Co-Founder of The Daily Aus Zara Seidler launched her Instagram based news platform in 2017 because "none of [our] friends were consuming news in the ways [we] did", she said.
The event took place at the William MacMahon Ball theatre, in the Old Arts building at the University of Melbourne, at an event about Tik Tok, Instagram and the future of news on 22nd of March.
Ms Seidler along with her co-founder Sam Koslowski, considered it "selfish" that people around them weren't interested, which is why they started the Instagram news page, The Daily Aus to make their friends "care about the news as much as they did".
"If you were put on social media rounds 5 years ago, you were basically the lowest in the company," The Daily Aus co-founder said, but Ms Seidler wanted to bring social media to the forefront to "speak directly" to young people. The Daily Aus now successfully has 433,000 followers who keep up with the page.
Ruhina Ali, a University student at Latrobe said, "Watching the news was too much of an effort", as she was discouraged by "the amount of information all news included".
The Guardian’s Tik Tok queen Matilda Bosely included that "Tik Tok has a no click barrier", which appealed to her since there was "less of a fight" to get people's attention, she said in conversation with Zara Seidler and Lecturer Sami Shah at the same event.
"There's a certain level of trust there," Ms Boseley said, between herself as a creator and her audience on social media that expects her to maintain her value of short yet informative videos. Each of her videos gets thousands of views.
Ms Ali agreed that Matilda Boseley's videos are 'engaging' and "just enough information".

Teenies Boutique
Teenies Boutique was founded with the mission of empowering women to protect themselves and take back their safety. Our story starts with the founder, a woman who was being harassed by a guy who had a crush on her and wasn’t interested. After reporting it to the authorities, nothing was done. The harassment kept going and even followed her home. At this point, she knew it was time for self-defense.

January 2023 Recap | Late
What I learned in January 2023:
I learned that having a mortgage, and now an employee is not allowing me to live as frivolously as I used to. I'm having to be ultra intentional with my income. Learning to cook from home. Learning to communicate more with my husband / more planning financially. January was such a grind working almost every day to catch up from Christmas.
I started to enjoy audio books more than podcasts. I spend way less time on social media and more time alone with an audio book.
While January was a grind, I took 0 photography jobs this month and that allowed me to focus solely non running my husbands business and our home (so trad I know.)
What I accomplished in January 2023:
We made time to see 1 Mavs game with friends.
We had a pretty sweet New Years Eve party.
I got our new living room painted.
Went to the gym 1-2x a week on average
(Not much happened because we were working our asses off just to recover financially from Christmas, and buying a house.)
What surprised me in January 2023:
What surprised me is the caliber of clients we have. I am finally happy for the most part about the work we're doing, and what we're getting paid. I feel good that we're able to help others spread their message through video production.
The days I remember best in January 2023:
Filming a podcast in downtown Dallas for one of our clients with the founder of Warstic Baseball Bats. It feels good to be trusted professionally to handle important interviews like this one. It's amazing looking into a room with tons of lights, and cameras knowing that we own 100% of it.
Another day was seeing the Mavs VS Clippers game in the 100's Section with our friends. The only caveat was my mood soured about halfway through it over something super trivial. It felt more real watching the game in the 100's over the usual 300's or on TV.
Cooking spaghetti and meatballs, and setting the table to watch the Mavs game with my husband. We even popped a bottle of champagne and just spent the entire evening talking, laughing, and having a great time together at the dinner table.
The person who played a huge role in my life in January 2023:
My husband! Through the entire grind of the month, no matter how exhausting. My favorite thing is hitting our bed each night, snuggling and watching tik toks before falling asleep. We're in this together, and working towards the same goals. 100% on the same page, no disagreements. I feel such a close connection and bond with my best friend. There were days were we had to eat at home instead of the usual takeout 4x a week (spoiled, I know) but I felt comfort knowing that I wasn't alone, and that it was only temporary / for the greater good. Our goal is to visit several theme parks before September 2023 and being frugal is going to help us save for these trips.
My best, and worst moment of January 2023:
My best moments have been making our house feel like a home. Especially because we didn't go out much. Making sure we're having occasional dinners at the table. Movie nights with candy and popcorn. A well made bed.
My worst moment was ruining a good time at the Mavs game. Honestly stress, and resentment got the best of me and I was irritated with my husband for 1/2 of the game. I'm realizing now how I need to take more accountability for scheduling us so busy. I need to do more to please myself, rather than trying to please my husband so much. Things feel unfair because I don't allow myself to feel spoiled.
What I wish I had done differently in January 2023:
I said yes to a work trip that 100% contributed to the stress this month. We fronted $1000 because the company would reimburse us for our travel accommodations. Even worse it was the company my husband's mom works for -so it caused a teensy bit of tension and resentment towards her. Next time I need to ask the company to pay for those things upfront.
What I stopped doing in January 2023:
I said no to photography jobs, weddings, and work that I didn't want to do. Even if I felt like I needed the money, I didn't want it to cost my peace. People were rude to me about it sometimes, but we already have dream clients who pay us what we're worth.
What I started doing in January 2023:
Like I said, I started audio books. I stopped letting the dogs sleep with us as much in order to keep my sheets clean. I started ironing my sheets lol. I started selling things I don't use on Poshmark.
Goals I'd like to achieve in February 2023:
Catch up financially
Book a Florida Trip to Busch Gardens for my Birthday
Buy Chanel Shoes for myself / birthday gift
Visit my siblings in San Antonio
Celebrate Galentine's with friends
Have a day off for Valentine's Day

Recently, a viral Tik Tok video of a girl calling a local bag brand "luxury" drew much hate from critics, who apparently did not agree with her standard of what luxury was. Many, as they should, quickly rushed to the defence of the girl, including the founders of the bag brand themselves. An article in the Straits Times expounded on the saga, explaining further that the whole concept of luxury is a symbol of social status, a kind of “signalling”, used in both economics and zoology to describe when individuals communicate their high quality through specific clues in order to be chosen by another party.
Reading this reminded me how prevalent this "signaling" is in our Singaporean society. It is tempting to conform to this world's game of posturing, self-branding, extrapolating that to every aspect of our lives, be it our career choices, lifestyle choices, our kids as well. But God reminds us that it is pointless to engineer our way to what we think is the top (social circle, status) It is pointless to boast in our riches and possessions and external embellishments. We do not become more godly by choosing the right "signals" the world approves of.
Remember! We are counter-cultural followers of our High King of heaven. The King who chose to be born in a lowly manger in Bethlehem (such an unlikely choice such that Nathaniel in the Bible said "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”) and to be killed in apparent defeat. He who rejected the world and all it offered when tempted by the devil who offered to give Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor if He chose to bow down and worship the evil one. As if all the heavens and earth weren't already God's in the first place - the devil is indeed a liar! God is the ultimate giver of all good things.
Therefore, may we remember to let God govern our life choices instead. God's wisdom is not our wisdom, and a victorious life for Christ can be very different from the life the world deems as successful. What we think is best for ourselves and our loved ones may not necessarily be God's best. It is better to examine the motivations of our heart and live prayerfully according to God's will instead. Our heavenly Father knows what's best for us and our loved ones and He gives His children good things. Instead of placing our anchor on the human credentials which is only a house built on sand, let us put our hope and trust in our God the Rock. May we live by the power of His Spirit, by the strength of His grace, made perfect in weakness.

The Indie Animation Boom Continues in 2022 [part 2]
Continued from part 1
Tumblr media
Four characters from of LimeLight (Ashira, Carter, Cheryl, and Alex)
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 21, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the ninth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on January 27, 2022.
A show I learned about recently is LimeLight. It started development in January 2021 and is created by a small production team that is part of the Uphoria Animation Studio. It is about a young Black woman named Ashira GoldenFire (voiced by Jazzy Greene) in New Orleans who tries to make it in the music industry. She is helped by her friend Cheryl Stone (voiced by Zoie E. Absher). Both go through “hardships and the evolution of music” as they try to achieve their dreams. But her path becomes harder after she brings Carter Sillver (voiced by Jack Kelly Savage), a Voodoo man, into her life. It is, as the show’s official website describes it, a series with a “twisted love story and adventure.”
The series, which has crowdfunding campaigns on Indiegogo and Patreon, already has a talented cast. Apart from those already mentioned, the cast is diverse, with various Black and Brown actors. Most of those on the crew appear to be first-time actors as the page on IMDB for the show indicates. The series is created by Hannah I. Johnson, who serves as writer, director, and producer.
Apart from Johnson, the show’s team consists of over 30 people, headed by a voice director, production manager, animation director, and editor. It includes various character and creature designers, background artists, writers, storyboarders, animators, and musicians. Johnson, known as MoralSky on Twitter, is the head writer on Samson, described as a “modern take on Robin Hood,” a producer of Robert J. Preston’s Fighting All Odds, an indie coming-of-age animated series about a deaf girl named Jackie, and founder of the Uphoria Animation Studio. Johnson has said, some time ago, that she’d like the pilot of LimeLight to be released in Winter of this year or early 2023.
LimeLight is not the only indie animated series about music. Far-Fetched, which was discussed earlier, focuses on a band, as does Battle of the Bands, a 2d mature animated series created by Allissoon Lockhart, a producer of Studio Meala, supervisor at Netflix, manager of the Qbomb band, and a drummer, with Parker Simmons as the co-showrunner. As it turns out, the lead character designer of Battle of the Bands, Max Monroy, is also the lead character designer on Far-Fetched!
Tumblr media
Title and characters from Battle of the Bands
Simmons was previously the creator and executive producer of Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart. The show, Battle of the Bands, is an adult action fantasy. It has Arin Hanson, Game Grumps, Hunter Peterson, Matthew Di Panni, and Hunter Burgan as producers. It looks like it will  come out some time this year. Hanson, Di Panni, Erica Mendez, Sarah Natochenny, Erika Ishii, and Imari are voice actors who are part of a band called Heat Seekers. Already character sheets and bios about the show’s characters have been posted, it has been said there will be a lot of LGBTQ characters, and amazing art about the show has been shared as well, along with the show’s music score. Lockhart has been very active in answering questions and talking about the show on Tik Tok, Twitter, Twitch, Instagram, and elsewhere, including noting the female musicians among the show characters, since the show was created in 2017.
LimeLight, Battle of the Bands, and Band of Mythix make me think about a Metal Family, a Russian indie animated series focusing on a heavy metal-loving family, I recently reviewed. Similar to Metal Family, Battle of the Bands, Band of Mythix, and LimeLight will be released in some form on YouTube. Unlike Metal Family, the aforementioned series are primarily English language series. Although the Metal Family is originally in the Russian language, it has a different voice cast for English dubbed episodes.
On an unrelated note, it’s exciting to see that the show, Road to Friendship, has changed into a show named Corrupted Memories. That series is created by Jocelyn Saravia, a deaf Latinx storyboard artist, and they are collaborating with their friends on the show. This new show is about a mysterious stolen experimental drug which causes “tension between the group of college students.”
Not every indie animation can survive the process of development. Some series are abandoned or ended for a reason or another. One recent example of this is Rain: The Animated Series, based on the soon-to-end webcomic of the same name by Jocelyn Samara DiDomenick which has a trans protagonist named Rain Flaherty, a bisexual aunt of Rain named Fara, a gay man named Aiken Flaherty, a lesbian named Maria Strongwell, a pansexual girl named Emily Caston, and a trans woman named Jessica Li, along with additional characters. The official YouTube channel described it as a “story for boys, girls, and everyone in between.” In September 2021, it was abruptly cancelled before the series premiere. [4] However, the video of the cancellation was later updated to say that while the attempt to “adapt the full comic” has ended since “many of the old cast and crew have moved on,” videos will presumably come in the future. This was further confirmed by a comment saying that while the comic is no longer being animated, there will be “more shorts and videos.” This means that the passion project can continue, but not as a full-fledged animated series. Even so, such an animated series is still possible. One comment said it is only “canceled for now.” Another said that the original push for an animated series fell apart. [5]
There are additional series I could talk about, like Rogue Metro, a 2D animated “post-cyberpunk science fantasy series with medieval inspirations,” and the S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters series which has a non-binary protagonist named Salem, along with Oliver who is gay, and Petra who is asexual. Its release date is unknown. The show’s official Twitter account has been silent since April of last year. In exciting news, however, this upcoming April, the series Interstellar Ranger Commence will be released on the official YouTube channel of Browntable, the production company for the series. This independent anime show will release episodes on a monthly basis, and is already set for a season 2!
In the end, I am optimistic that the boom in indie animated series will continue this year and for years to come, bringing joy to creators, artists, voice actors, and viewers alike.

Naomi Bacon on Marketing Books on Social Media
Naomi Bacon is a seasoned book marketer, and founder of The Tandem Collective. She has worked with JK Rowling’s agency, The Blair Partnership, as well as Pottermore, Pan Macmillan, Penguin and Hachette. Her ambition has always been "to be at the forefront of digital innovation, creating meaningful connections between publishing partners, content creators and brands to generate word of mouth around new book, film, theatre and TV releases."
We talk about how she came up with her "Readalong" service, as well as word of mouth being gold-dust, measuring the impact of social media marketing on the bottom line, micro-influencers, Instagram story posts, book recommendations, optimum follower numbers, marketers as booksellers, top ten bestseller lists, shoe-string campaigns, Tik-Tok's backlist power, conveying enthusiasm, curating social media, scathing reviews, structuring public book conversations, engagement, non-fiction titles, proof of product and bespoke marketing packages for small presses.
Naomi mentioned that Tandem offers a free video interview service for small presses who want to pitch their catalogues on Instagram and Youtube. For details, email her at [email protected]
