"There has never been another Steve Rogers, has there?"

Well, Zemo. You're wrong.

There is another superhuman who hasn't been corrupted by the serum. In fact, you are looking at him right now. Bucky.

When Zemo said this line I realized this narrative felt off somehow. Because going by what he said before about all superhumans being supremacists and inevitably ending up down that path, it would mean Bucky is like Karli, or like all the other "corrupted enhanced individuals". And there's nothing farther away from the truth. This may get a bit long so bear with me.

After Bucky was first captured and tested on back in Azzano, he already had a version of what would become the super-soldier serum. It was the one thing that allowed him to survive the fall. If we take Zemo's words as true, it means Bucky had to have been already different (personality-wise) ever since then. So, did he become a machine of hatred and jealousy? did he start killing people left and right? No. You know what he did? He followed his best friend and kept fighting alongside him against the nazis. He may have had to kill back then, but it was war so what are we expecting. Until the moment he fell off the train, there was no indication of something "evil" lurking inside him.

I have an issue with the way certain storylines regarding the Winter Soldier have been dealt with. Starting with the "make amends" notebook. You make amends when you've wronged someone. But Bucky's situation is different. Even if it was him physically doing this stuff, it was beyond his control. HYDRA is the one and only responsible for those horrible things, and yet no one so far (not even his therapist) has actually told him that, or at least reminded him of it. The only person who has ever said this to Bucky was Steve, back in Civil War. He even owns the insult "my people" as if he had truly been part of HYDRA willingly, even if he acknowledges he was captured, he still sees himself as a villain. Those killings were forced upon him. And still, we see him making amends for something he had no say on.

The single moment Bucky regained a small piece of his will, he saved someone. He saved Steve. The first moment he was able to be himself again, even if everything was confusing and scary, he still jumped after this man and pulled him from the river. Flashforward two years, in Bucharest. Is Bucky doing something heartless and evil like going on a murder spree? has he joined any fascist group? No. he's buying plums, living in a small apartment room, and writing his memories on tons of notebooks, trying to cling on to the only thing that reminds him he was, he is good.

And now, with Zemo's comments implying Bucky too is corrupted by the serum... it doesn't sit well with me. I don't know if this is Zemo being Zemo, or if this is the actual approach taken by the writers. Although I'm inclined to believe the latter, given that no one has said anything against it nor corrected Bucky or Zemo about it.

Which I find troubling. Because Bucky isn't bad. He wasn't corrupted by the serum. He's still this loyal, nerdy man troubled by his past. He has never done anything evil by his own decision. Hell, the first thing he did after running away from the countries trying to kill him was to ask to be put on cryo again. "I can't trust my own mind. So until they find a way to get this stuff out of my head I think going back under is the best thing. For everybody." And even in this episode, when he asks Ayo if she's sure about this. She replies with "I won't let you hurt anyone." Because that's what he feared the most. Hurting those around him.

So, I honestly hope this was just Zemo messing with his head again. And I hope the writers manage to acknowledge this before the finale. Because no, Steve wasn't the only superhuman who remained true to himself after the serum. Bucky is too.

Paring: Bucky Barnes x reader

Warnings: ANGST, like lot’s of it

Summary: It is the fifth failed test during the Winter Soldier programming removal process and Bucky feels like he can’t handle it any more. Reader is trying to be there for him.

A/N: This is a result of THAT SCENE in FATWS 1x04 that broke everyone’s hearts. I had so many emotions I had to put them somewhere, so this came out. It’ s very sad guys, just a heads up. I should also mention this belongs to the New Year’s secret universe, because I love these two love birds and I wanna discover more things about them. It is a prequel, but it can be read as a one shot, no problem.

This is my first attempt at angst so feedback will be incredibly appreciated! <3

MASTERLIST

The rain had left the soil soft making your steps slower than you wanted them to be. The smell of wet trees and the moisture enveloping you enhanced your anxiety for some inexplicable reason.

It had been four hours since the fifth test and Bucky was nowhere to be found.

You had already been to all the places he usually isolated himself in. His room, his tent, Steve’s visit room; nothing. Maybe he came to you? You went back to your place, but still; nothing. So you hit the outside. He was nowhere near your mansion. Neither the farm or the river. You checked everywhere.

Then the idea hit you. There was that hill you once climbed together, a quite high one, where you could see the whole valley with the farms and animals Bucky loved so much. He mentioned it was the only place that reminded him of what freedom felt like. And that’s all Bucky was fighting for all those months. His freedom.

The night was cold and you were exhausted, but there was no going back without him. You finally reached the peak and Bucky was there, so close to the edge it made your heart beat faster. He was drenched, clothes wet and heavy, hair glued to his face.

You approach him hesitantly, not knowing how bad things were. Even in the darkness of night you could see the several bruises across his arm, evidence of the fight he had a few hours ago. Things didn’t go well once again. Ayo informed you that they almost made it this time, but at the last word Bucky snapped; the soldier came out and she had to put him down.

Your heart broke for him. Bucky was so close to giving up you could feel it. It took a lot of work to convince him to try one more time, after the horrible failure of the previous test.

“Bucky?” your voice was low and calm. He didn’t answer; he seemed so lost in his head that you weren’t sure he even heard you.

“It didn’t work.” he eventually spoke without turning to look at you. Voice horse, eyes red and puffy from crying, Bucky looked like a ghost of himself. Your throat tightened and the impulse to cry hit you, but you swallowed it down. You had to be strong; for him.

“I know… It was better than last time though.” It was necessary to bring up the only positive aspect of this tragedy. Better than last time. You focus on that since it is the only thing giving you hope. And you needed hope, so you could give it to him.

Bucky scoffed but it was an empty sound, completely bare or sentiment. He remained still and emotionless, gaze empty staring at nothing. It scared you seeing him like that, completely cut off his emotions,choosing to feel nothing at all. Because if he opened his emotional part all he felt was soul crashing pain. “It will never work.” he stated coldly.

“This is fear and exhaustion talking Bucky. Come on let’s go back, you need to rest. This is a long and hard journey and you are so close to the end.” he needed to be reminded of that, but it didn’t seem to give him any motivation at this point. He was still as a rock against the strong Wakandan wind.

“There is no end in this y/n.” he sounded so convinced; convinced and calm. That calmness was very alarming.

Last time was the worst one until that point, but at least he was angry; he was shouting and arguing with you, expressing his despair. Now his numbness was frightening, since you couldn’t tell what he felt, so you couldn’t imagine how he was going to act.

You hang your head letting out a heavy sigh. That is when you saw it. A knife on his belt.

Bucky never carried any weapons with him since the moment he stepped on Wakanda. He wanted nothing to do with them; he was there for a fresh start. Your blood turned to ice at the possibility of him coming up here to harm himself.

He fought with every ounce of energy you had left not to show the panic in your voice. “Trust me Bucky. If Shuri says it is possible, then it is possible. I know it’s hard, but you have to be patient.”

Bucky took his gaze of the sky for the first time, only to look at the ground. He took a deep breath and slowly let the air out, shaking his head. “I don’t know if I can fight any more...” his voice horse and shaky, exceeded such raw pain, it made your stomach ache like you had swallowed a fireball.

You hadn’t seen Bucky so hopeless before. He had been bitten down many times during the removal process. He had been through immense physical and mental pain, but there was always faith in his blue eyes; even in the slightest amount, you could see it every time.

But this time, it wasn’t there.

Suddenly you felt cold and it wasn’t the luck of a coat. You felt helpless, like anything coming out of your mouth would be the wrong thing. You searched and searched your mind for something clever, something powerful enough to snap him out of his anguish but you were left empty handed.

You soon realized that desperate hunt for the perfect quote was pointless. The only thing you could do as a human and a friend was to speak your truth.

You took one more step closer to him, careful not to intimidate him. “Bucky… I’m not gonna pretend like I know what you are going through, because I don’t. Nobody does. But I can tell you the things I know for sure.

“I know life has been incredibly unfair to you. I know you are sick of fighting. I know you feel like you are trapped in a nightmare that never ends.

“Just as I know that you are the strongest man I’ve ever met.

“And I know that if you keep having faith in yourself, you will finally be free.”

At those last words Bucky turned to look at you and the desperation in his teary eyes grabbed your heart and crushes it to pieces. “I will never trust myself again…” the tears escaped his eyes in thick streams.

“You will; I promise you will one day Bucky. It just takes time... For now I trust you. Is that enough?” you say offering your hand for him to hold on to.”Just for tonight.”

He tilted his head, gaze becoming even more intense. So much fear… So much need for hope… You feel like he is looking right into your soul, searching for something to hold onto. Is your faith in him strong enough?

He doesn’t answer your question; he reaches for your hand instead. Relief washed over your body when you felt his fingers interlace with yours. He didn’t give up; he kept fighting and he let you be there for him.

You squeezed his hand for reassurance with a warm smile on your face and he let you lead the way back.

I’m thinking of turning this into a mini series with more one-shots that are connected but can also be read individully like this one. But we’ll see how that goes, since I’m afraid the release of Monday will destroy me. I’m in the movie after all!

i like that they finally remembered sam’s a trauma counselor i also really like karli so im glad sam fucks w her too bc she’s right. i loved them watching john get his ass beat by the dora milaje and like how john is showing his evil ass to the world bc i hate him. lemar deserved fucking better. i really like the scene with bucky in wakanda like yes show us that man crying and processing trauma. zemo is great. sam and bucky are in love.

Sam Wilson in 1.04

Sam has continually shown why he deserves the mantle of Cap, but it’s even more obvious in his episode. I mean... Bucky is a good guy (and he was Cap for a time in the comics), but I think the show is doing a good job showing why Sam is the better choice. Bucky is awesome at violence, even if it isn’t necessarily his first choice, but he lacks the wisdom Sam has. He lacks the emotional intelligence.

Sam Wilson IS Captain American, shield or no, even though honestly the world may not even deserve him. He looks at people with compassion. He’s smart - and wise (which is not the same thing). He doesn’t get caught up in the heat of the moment and forget that he’s dealing with real human beings. Even when someone hits him where it hurts the most - Karli threatens his family - he still goes to talk to her. He doesn’t immediately open fire at her face, he gives her a chance to explain herself. 

I remember way back in the Winter Solider movie when Steve was talking to Sam about saving Bucky and Sam said,  "Look, whoever he used to be, the guy he is now, I don't think he's the kind you save. He's the kind you stop."

The kind you stop. Because for Sam, it’s never been about killing. Even the Winter Soldier. Sam wanted him stopped. This is the same flavor statement that Steve gave to Dr. Erskine when asked if he wanted to kill Nazis. “I don’t like bullies, I don’t care where they’re from.”

That’s Sam’s attitude. He’s not about revenge, and he’s not about mindless aggression. He isn’t in it for his ego, or to get anything for himself. (Clearly, his family has not been taken care of by the government despite all he’s already done.) He’s out there risking himself because he wants to help people. Because even without the serum, he’s ready to jump into the fray and fight - if necessary - to stop innocent people from getting hurt. Even though he’s been hurt. Even though his family has been hurt. Even though, after saving the world he can’t even get a bank loan to save his family home.

Sam Wilson is selfless. Sam Wilson is a real hero.
