NYT's Notable Books of 2023
Each year, we pore over thousands of new books, seeking out the best novels, memoirs, biographies, poetry collections, stories and more. Here are the standouts, selected by the staff of The New York Times Book Review.
AFTER SAPPHO by Selby Wynn Schwartz
Inspired by Sappho’s work, Schwartz’s debut novel offers an alternate history of creativity at the turn of the 20th century, one that centers queer women artists, writers and intellectuals who refused to accept society’s boundaries.
ALL THE SINNERS BLEED by S.A. Cosby
In his earlier thrillers, Cosby worked the outlaw side of the crime genre. In his new one — about a Black sheriff in a rural Southern town, searching for a serial killer who tortures Black children — he’s written a crackling good police procedural.
THE BEE STING by Paul Murray
In Murray’s boisterous tragicomic novel, a once wealthy Irish family struggles with both the aftermath of the 2008 financial crash and their own inner demons.
BIOGRAPHY OF X by Catherine Lacey
Lacey rewrites 20th-century U.S. history through the audacious fictional life story of X, a polarizing female performance artist who made her way from the South to New York City’s downtown art scene.
BIRNAM WOOD by Eleanor Catton
In this action-packed novel from a Booker Prize winner, a collective of activist gardeners crosses paths with a billionaire doomsday prepper on land they each want for different purposes.
BLACKOUTS by Justin Torres
This lyrical, genre-defying novel — winner of the 2023 National Book Award — explores what it means to be erased and how to persist after being wiped away.
BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN by Jessica Knoll
In her third and most assured novel, Knoll shifts readers’ attention away from a notorious serial killer, Ted Bundy, and onto the lives — and deaths — of the women he killed. Perhaps for the first time in fiction, Knoll pooh-poohs Bundy's much ballyhooed intelligence, celebrating the promise and perspicacity of his victims instead.
CHAIN-GANG ALL-STARS by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
This satire — in which prison inmates duel on TV for a chance at freedom — makes readers complicit with the bloodthirsty fans sitting ringside. The fight scenes are so well written they demonstrate how easy it might be to accept a world this sick.
THE COVENANT OF WATER by Abraham Verghese
Verghese’s first novel since “Cutting for Stone” follows generations of a family across 77 years in southwestern India as they contend with political strife and other troubles — capped by a shocking discovery made by the matriarch’s granddaughter, a doctor.
CROOK MANIFESTO by Colson Whitehead
Returning to the world of his novel “Harlem Shuffle,” Whitehead again uses a crime story to illuminate a singular neighborhood at a tipping point — here, Harlem in the 1970s.
THE DELUGE by Stephen Markley
Markley’s second novel confronts the scale and gravity of climate change, tracking a cadre of scientists and activists from the gathering storm of the Obama years to the super-typhoons of future decades. Immersive and ambitious, the book shows the range of its author’s gifts: polyphonic narration, silken sentences and elaborate world-building.
EASTBOUND by Maylis de Kerangal
In de Kerangal’s brief, lyrical novel, translated by Jessica Moore, a young Russian soldier on a trans-Siberian train decides to desert and turns to a civilian passenger, a Frenchwoman, for help.
EMILY WILDE’S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FAERIES by Heather Fawcett
The world-building in this tale of a woman documenting a new kind of faerie is exquisite, and the characters are just as textured and richly drawn. This is the kind of folkloric fantasy that remembers the old, blood-ribboned source material about sacrifices and stolen children, but adds a modern gloss.
ENTER GHOST by Isabella Hammad
In Hammad’s second novel, a British Palestinian actor returns to her hometown in Israel to recover from a breakup and spend time with her family. Instead, she’s talked into joining a staging of “Hamlet” in the West Bank, where she has a political awakening.
FORBIDDEN NOTEBOOK by Alba de Céspedes
A best-selling novelist and prominent anti-Fascist in her native Italy, de Céspedes has lately fallen into unjust obscurity. Translated by Ann Goldstein, this elegant novel from the 1950s tells the story of a married mother, Valeria, whose life is transformed when she begins keeping a secret diary.
THE FRAUD by Zadie Smith
Based on a celebrated 19th-century trial in which the defendant was accused of impersonating a nobleman, Smith’s novel offers a vast panoply of London and the English countryside, and successfully locates the social controversies of an era in a handful of characters.
FROM FROM by Monica Youn
In her fourth book of verse, a svelte, intrepid foray into American racism, Youn turns a knowing eye on society’s love-hate relationship with what it sees as the “other.”
A GUEST IN THE HOUSE by Emily Carroll
After a lonely young woman marries a mild-mannered widower and moves into his home, she begins to wonder how his first wife actually died. This graphic novel alternates between black-and-white and overwhelming colors as it explores the mundane and the horrific.
THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE by James McBride
McBride’s latest, an intimate, big-hearted tale of community, opens with a human skeleton found in a well in the 1970s, and then flashes back to the past, to the ’20s and ’30s, to explore the town’s Black, Jewish and immigrant history.
HELLO BEAUTIFUL by Ann Napolitano
In her radiant fourth novel, Napolitano puts a fresh spin on the classic tale of four sisters and the man who joins their family. Take “Little Women,” move it to modern-day Chicago, add more intrigue, lots of basketball and a different kind of boy next door and you’ve got the bones of this thoroughly original story.
A HISTORY OF BURNING by Janika Oza
This remarkable debut novel tells the story of an extended Indo-Ugandan family that is displaced, settled and displaced again.
HOLLY by Stephen King
The scrappy private detective Holly Gibney (who appeared in “The Outsider” and several other novels) returns, this time taking on a missing-persons case that — in typical King fashion — unfolds into a tale of Dickensian proportions.
A HOUSE FOR ALICE by Diana Evans
This polyphonic novel traces one family’s reckoning after the patriarch dies in a fire, as his widow, a Nigerian immigrant, considers returning to her home country and the entire family re-examines the circumstances of their lives.
THE ILIAD by Homer
Emily Wilson’s propulsive new translation of the “Iliad” is buoyant and expressive; she wants this version to be read aloud, and it would certainly be fun to perform.
INK BLOOD SISTER SCRIBE by Emma Törzs
The sisters in Törzs's delightful debut have been raised to protect a collection of magic books that allow their keepers to do incredible things. Their story accelerates like a fugue, ably conducted to a tender conclusion.
KAIROS by Jenny Erpenbeck
This tale of a torrid, yearslong relationship between a young woman and a much older married man — translated from the German by Michael Hofmann — is both profound and moving.
KANTIKA by Elizabeth Graver
Inspired by the life of Graver’s maternal grandmother, this exquisitely imagined family saga spans cultures and continents as it traces the migrations of a Sephardic Jewish girl from turn-of-the-20th-century Constantinople to Barcelona, Havana and, finally, Queens, N.Y.
LAND OF MILK AND HONEY by C Pam Zhang
Zhang’s lush, keenly intelligent novel follows a chef who’s hired to cook for an “elite research community” in the Italian Alps, in a not-so-distant future where industrial-agricultural experiments in America’s heartland have blanketed the globe in a crop-smothering smog.
LONE WOMEN by Victor LaValle
The year is 1915, and the narrator of LaValle’s horror-tinged western has arrived in Montana to cultivate an unforgiving homestead. She’s looking for a fresh start as a single Black woman in a sparsely populated state, but the locked trunk she has in stow holds a terrifying secret.
MONICA by Daniel Clowes
In Clowes’s luminous new work, the titular character, abandoned by her mother as a child, endures a life of calamities before resolving to learn about her origins and track down her parents.
THE MOST SECRET MEMORY OF MEN by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr
Based on a true story and translated by Lara Vergnaud, Sarr’s novel — about a Senegalese writer brought low by a plagiarism scandal — asks sharp questions about the state of African literature in the West.
THE NEW NATURALS by Gabriel Bump
In Bump’s engrossing new novel, a young Black couple, mourning the loss of their newborn daughter and disillusioned with the world, start a utopian society — but tensions both internal and external soon threaten their dreams.
NORTH WOODS by Daniel Mason
Mason’s novel looks at the occupants of a single house in Massachusetts over several centuries, from colonial times to present day. An apple farmer, an abolitionist, a wealthy manufacturer: The book follows these lives and many others, with detours into natural history and crime reportage.
NOT EVEN THE DEAD by Juan Gómez Bárcena
An ex-conquistador in Spanish-ruled, 16th-century Mexico is asked to hunt down an Indigenous prophet in this novel by a leading writer in Spain, splendidly translated by Katie Whittemore. The epic search stretches across much of the continent and, as the author bends time and history, lasts centuries.
THE NURSERY by Szilvia Molnar
“I used to be a translator and now I am a milk bar.” So begins Molnar’s brilliant novel about a new mother falling apart within the four walls of her apartment.
OUR SHARE OF NIGHT by Mariana Enriquez
This dazzling, epic narrative, translated from the Spanish by Megan McDowell, is a bewitching brew of mystery and myth, peopled by mediums who can summon “the Darkness” for a secret society of wealthy occultists seeking to preserve consciousness after death.
PINEAPPLE STREET by Jenny Jackson
Jackson’s smart, dishy debut novel embeds readers in an upper-crust Brooklyn Heights family — its real estate, its secrets, its just-like-you-and-me problems. Does money buy happiness? “Pineapple Street” asks a better question: Does it buy honesty?
THE REFORMATORY by Tananarive Due
Due’s latest — about a Black boy, Robert, who is wrongfully sentenced to a fictionalized version of Florida’s infamous and brutal Dozier School — is both an incisive examination of the lingering traumas of racism and a gripping, ghost-filled horror novel. “The novel’s extended, layered denouement is so heart-smashingly good, it made me late for work,” Randy Boyagoda wrote in his review. “I couldn’t stop reading.”
THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS by Vajra Chandrasekera
Trained to kill by his mother and able to see demons, the protagonist of Chandrasekera’s stunning and lyrical novel flees his destiny as an assassin and winds up in a politically volatile metropolis.
SAME BED DIFFERENT DREAMS by Ed Park
Double agents, sinister corporations, slasher films, U.F.O.s — Park’s long-awaited second novel is packed to the gills with creative elements that enliven his acerbic, comedic and lyrical odyssey into Korean history and American paranoia.
TAKE WHAT YOU NEED by Idra Novey
This elegant novel resonates with implication beyond the taut contours of its central story line. In Novey’s deft hands, the complex relationship between a young woman and her former stepmother hints at the manifold divisions within America itself.
THIS OTHER EDEN by Paul Harding
In his latest novel, inspired by the true story of a devastating 1912 eviction in Maine that displaced an entire mixed-race fishing community, Harding turns that history into a lyrical tale about the fictional Apple Island on the cusp of destruction.
TOM LAKE by Ann Patchett
Locked down on the family’s northern Michigan cherry orchard, three sisters and their mother, a former actress whose long-ago summer fling went on to become a movie star, reflect on love and regret in Patchett’s quiet and reassuring Chekhovian novel.
THE UNSETTLED by Ayana Mathis
This novel follows three generations across time and place: a young mother trying to create a home for herself and her son in 1980s Philadelphia, and her mother, who is trying to save their Alabama hometown from white supremacists seeking to displace her from her land.
VICTORY CITY by Salman Rushdie
Rushdie’s new novel recounts the long life of Pampa Kampana, who creates an empire from magic seeds in 14th-century India. Her world is one of peace, where men and women are equal and all faiths welcome, but the story Rushdie tells is of a state that forever fails to live up to its ideals.
WE COULD BE SO GOOD by Cat Sebastian
This queer midcentury romance — about reporters who meet at work, become friends, move in together and fall in love — lingers on small, everyday acts like bringing home flowers with the groceries, things that loom large because they’re how we connect with others.
WESTERN LANE by Chetna Maroo
In this polished and disciplined debut novel, an 11-year-old Jain girl in London who has just lost her mother turns her attention to the game of squash — which in Maroo’s graceful telling becomes a way into the girl’s grief.
WITNESS by Jamel Brinkley
Set in Brooklyn, and featuring animal rescue workers, florists, volunteers, ghosts and UPS workers, Brinkley’s new collection meditates on what it means to see and be seen.
Y/N by Esther Yi
In this weird and wondrous novel, a bored young woman in thrall to a boy band buys a one-way ticket to Seoul.
YELLOWFACE by R.F. Kuang
Kuang’s first foray outside of the fantasy genre is a breezy and propulsive tale about a white woman who achieves tremendous literary success by stealing a manuscript from a recently deceased Asian friend and passing it off as her own.

Love is Blind Season 4 Episode 2
Tiffany and Brett
What’s hilarious is he was all butt hurt and she was almost jokingly like “damn I feel bad I fell asleep”
Damn she super straight forward.
CALLED IT!! The first proposal
Answer the man before he assumes you fell asleep again.
OH THE REVEAL
I don’t know if I’m feeling this turtleneck Brett
I like her dress though.
Damn y’all crying? They’re cute together.
Jackie and Marshall
Oof the parental trauma is coming out.
Oh nah your dad was emotionally abusive. There’s a difference between pushing your kid to be their best (and going overboard, unintentionally) and just being mean.
Oh I like Marshall!!!! Why didn’t we see more of him in the first episode?!
Oh she in love for real.
She ain’t saying it back. Is she going to choose the other guy?
That seems manipulative to me. Like making her choose you by saying if it’s not her it’s nobody.
Okay Marshall calm down. Kind of a red flag that you’re going from 0 to 100 that quick. I mean I don’t like the mind games either but no need to fight. This is all part of the process.
Yes. Listen to Brett. Calm down and let that shit go. It’s how the experience works.
Damn you Josh. Why you gotta get into it.
But this isn’t a game Josh. Go away. I don’t like my first impression of you. I could be wrong but I get a vibe.
Kwame and Micah
I just don’t see the appeal.
Damn why get the man’s hopes up? Why not just tell him straight up that you want Paul.
Man is heartbroken.
Nah you ain’t alone. It was fucked up cause she said one thing one date then broke up with you the next.
AWE HE’S SOBBING OVER HER I FEEL SO BAD FOR HIM
What did you want him to do? Break down and beg you? If you don’t want him, you don’t want him and he’s just trying to accept that with dignity.
Oh she’s such a bitch! Irina was just trying to help no need to snap at her!
Paul and Amber
Paul just say it. Don’t fuck around and make it worse for her. Just say it.
If it’s that hard to break up with her, maybe it’s not the right move.
Kwame leave that convo. It’s masochistic. Don’t lose your shit with him.
Kwame and Chelsea
Yeah it hurts that he’s hurt over someone else. Nobody wants to hear that. Nobody wants to feel like a second choice.
I know circumstance led to him focusing on Chelsea but I’m so glad cause I was rooting for the two of them. I just don’t like Micah.
Paul and Micah
Paul that fit seems too big for you.
I don’t think they’ll last.
Zack and Bliss (and Irina)
Zack please choose Bliss. I don’t like Irina as a person.
Irina why are you starting shit? It’s gross that as a grown ass woman, you’re doing this shit.
I’m his defense he doesn’t see that side of her. He doesn’t see her at all. All he knows is what she tells him.
Miscellaneous
LMAO Chelsea is hilarious. Singing Usher to wake her up, but what’s funnier is it worked.
I never understood why they get all dressed up for the pods. Like. They can’t see you.
Irina I’m starting to not like you because you’re giving in to Micah’s bitchiness.
Micah and Irina are bitches!! Jackie is in crisis and y’all are joking/laughing about it.
I like Bliss and Chelsea.

A different FNAF superheroes AU this time a miraculous themed one starring goldenduo because well I won't deny I love Evan to pieces he's probably my favorite human FNAF character so our heroes we have
Scarab aka Evan Afton who after a robbery and murder of the guardian of the miraculous is found by tikki the kwame of creation who senses his kind heart and gives him her miraculous however Evan not only feels he is incapable of being a superhero and is constantly terrified of fighting super villains when they come up for him and his partner to deal with however tiki winds up becoming his emotional support person when not transformed helping calm his anxiety while his crime fighting partner helps him with this while they're out on the field transformed
Tumblr media
Second is Cassidy AKA cat fight a young orphan who is tough as nails and goes by they them pronouns or whatever pronouns they feel comfortable using at the time always telling her best Friend and crime fighting partner so that he knows what pronouns to use that day though Evan usually just sticks with they them pronouns they got the black cat miraculous and more or less the same way that Evan got the ladybug miraculous however for them the reasoning was different rather than being a result of a kind heart it's because plagg the kwame of destruction found them tough as nails and would help balance out Evan after witnessing tiki meet Evan
Tumblr media
Together these two protect hurricane Utah from unsurprisingly William Afton who has stolen the miraculous of the peacock to create monstrous supervillains that resemble the FNAF animatronics and often share names with them since no one really knows this villain's identity just that he's a man in a purple super villain outfit everyone just calls him the purple man and he rolls with it because he doesn't actually care he murdered to get his miraculous which is what led to tiki and plag separating from the rest and just all the miraculous are just kind of all over the city at this point so it's a race between the golden Duo and the purple man to find the remaining miraculous

Invader perfect au
(Because I’ve been following Joriah Kwame’s little miss perfect)
SOOOOO here’s the plot:
Zim is legitimately Irk’s finest invader, with a 20 planet invasion streak (Because IZ is 20 years old now, but I might make it less to nerf it). Since no invader has managed to conquer that many planets (Because let’s be honest if it’s a big celebration if somebody managed to conquer one planet as shown with Skoodge, than of course everyone’s gonna lose their shit over if someone conquered more than 10). This streak has granted him the nickname “Invader Perfect”  So the tallest hate him because he’s an infuriatingly good invader despite being the smallest invader there is, and he has an incredibly stupid SIR unit, at least when it’s not in duty mode, which is most of the time. (Oh BTW Gir’s there too because A: Zim’s been an invader for a while and B: Someone’s gotta help ZIm with his GIfted kid burnout™.)and they can’t just kick him off even though he goes against the irken standards of “Being tall=Being smart/strong” so he ends up being the poster boy for invasion, one could say he even outshines the tallest(Which is extra infuriating to Red and Purple because Zim was still Little Mr Perfect in his elite days, so it’s extra personal when he still overshadows them even though they are literally Irk’s leaders). When Operation impending doom 2 arrives, they purposefully “Forget” to invite him, but Zim still shows up because he makes a point to be on time™.  So like in show Red’s all like “Wait hang on I got a plan” So they send him to Earth because it’s so far away, and if he’s gone long enough they might be able to get into the spotlight.
So Zim goes to Earth, settling in and making plans to conquer it, how to blend in, ETC. But when he goes to skool he meets Dib, the weird kid who loves the paranormal and stuff. (Dib’s much cheerier in this au, he’s basically the ordinary to Zim’s little miss perfect). So when Dib discovers that Zim’s an alien, despite Zim having an actually good human disguise and installing a ruthless security system around his house, Dib gets super excited and asks ZIm tons of questions about his planet and stuff, and Zim just answers the minimum amount of questions that will make Dib leave him alone because Zim’s got shit to do. But as time goes on Zim starts warming up to Dib, eventually developing a crush on Dib. However Zim does everything to repress it because HE CAN’T RISK FALLING OFF HIS THRONE!
Zim goes on trying to conquer earth, even though Dib keeps foiling him, and it’s really confusing to ZIm because on one hand Dib’s trying to stop him but also trying to be friendly with him. Like a peace treaty attempt of sorts. Gayngst and confusion ensues

In the introduction, Rick Riordan compares the anthology to a Multiverse Mansion, and I found that as I read this book, I remembered all the reasons why Rick Riordan Presents books are some of my favorites. Reading them all together gives this sense of familiarity that did feel like you were coming home to this multiverse mansion.
Calamity Juice by Carlos Hernandez
Follow Sal and Gabi as they have to retrieve one of their Culeco classmates who was last seen on a rogue unicorn. I thought it was super cool that there were two instances of Culeco classmates that saw this multiverse and were able to gain personal growth from it. I'm glad to see Gladis get a story and finally get the character arc that I've been hoping for her.
Beware the Grove of True Love by Roshani Chokshi
On an errand for Urvashi, Aru, Mini, and Brynne end up in the Grove of True Love, where they have to fix a past story before they become trapped. I felt all the emotions that Aru was discovering as they made their way through the story. Of course, I loved Aru, Mini, and Brynne's friendship as well as the way that the three of them work together, both in fighting and simpler problem solving.
The Cave of Doom by J.C. Cervantes
Zane and Brooks investigate their island after a reviewer claimed to see a monster. As they investigate, they realize that the threat might be much more different than they can imagine. Zane and Brooks have a great relationship, with plenty of back-and-forth as they investigate the Cave of Doom. We also get a visit from a familiar face and I was pretty surprised at the conclusion that Zane and Brooks come to at the end about the mysterious beings they come to find.
The Initiation by Yoon Ha Lee
Follow Min and Jun as they attempt their first assignment post the events of The Dragon Pearl. But things start to go sideways very quickly, and soon Min and her friends must figure out how to stop a dangerous commandant. I enjoyed reading through the absolute chaos of this story, especially in the contrasting ways that Min's friends from The Dragon Pearl and Min's squad here differ.
The Gum Baby Files by Kwame Mbalia
Oh, I love Gum Baby. Here we find out some of what Gum Baby, Ayanna, and Junior were up to in between the events of the second and third Tristan Strong books. Gum Baby must face a ghost that wants to erase history. As usual, there was an amazing blend of history and mythology, with a heavy dose of Gum Baby's antics. This story also has one of my favorite lines of the entire anthology, delivered to Gum Baby from someone she meets in this story.
The Demon Drum by Rebecca Roanhorse
Nizhoni and her fellow members of the Ancestor Club are going to a powwow. Soon, they begin to notice that things seem to be going poorly and investigate. I loved this look at all of Nizhoni's friends and classmates, not just Davery, and the way that Nizhoni interacts with each of them. The group-problem solving to take out the demon drum was super fun to read, and I loved reading all the descriptions about the powwow.
Bruto and the Freaky Flower by Tehlor Kay Mejia
Paola's chupacabra puppy, Bruto, is suddenly not doing so well...and Paola has a vision of a freaky flower in the desert that she thinks might save him. Join Pao and Dante in traversing across the dangerous desert in hopes of getting to the flower to save Bruto. I've loved Bruto since Pao first took him in, so I enjoyed this Bruto-centered short story. I certainly didn't see the twist of the flower, but it was super fun to read.
The Loneliest Demon by Sarwat Chadda
Following the events of City of the Plague God, Sik's life is back to normal...mostly. There's this demon that keeps trying to kill him. This one was one of the funnier stories, I enjoyed reading about how Sik had to try to help this demon, and the resulting conclusion to this story was satisfying. I just saw the announcement that there's going to be a sequel to City of the Plague God, and I hope that Rabisu will make an appearance there!
My Night at the Gifted Carnival by Graci Kim
Taking place before the events of The Last Fallen Star, join Riley and Hattie as they take a trip to the Gifted Carnival, an event held by the Gifted Clans that allows for even saram people to experience magic hidden in plain sight. However, when a faceless ghost comes and begins freezing children to try to kidnap them, Riley and Hattie must figure out how to defeat her. I enjoyed reading this one, seeing the various types of magic that we started learning about in The Last Fallen Star get expanded upon more. Riley is still pretty sad that she's saram, but she's got a storm coming. I also loved reading all the descriptions of the festival - I certainly wish I could attend something like that (minus the ghost, of course).
My Life as a Child Outlaw by Rick Riordan
I found this to be the saddest of the stories in this collection. Follow Demne through the course of his two years as a Child Outlaw, constantly running for his life due to a father he has never met. This was a fun introduction to Celtic mythology, which I had never learned before. I found myself really feeling for Demne as he continually tried and failed to find a place to settle and belong.
One of the fun things that I loved were a few references I caught as I was reading these stories of the other heroes in this anthology. It felt very much like the Easter Eggs that you might see if you were watching an MCU movie, which made catching them super fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these and can't wait to see what comes next!
Thank you to Disney Publishing Worldwide, Rick Riordan Presents, and NetGalley for the ARC.

ship meme for kwame and lennon, I beg
♡ + kwame & lennon
Who is the most affectionate?
this is a good question, because i feel like they are pretty equal with their affection, however, lennon can sometimes feel hesitant with their affection, as they can be afraid it comes off as overly-clingy. this fades as time goes on and they get more comfortable with expressing their physical wants, but it’s likely that every time kwame initiates any affection, she’ll melt into them, but it takes a while for lennon to do the same.
Who initiates the handholding?
okay this is where it gets a little funky - because i feel like when they were purely platonic, lennon was never that shy about holding kwame’s hand. it probably started when they were watching a scary movie together some time, and she accidentally grabbed their hand without meaning to. then i think lennon just... never stopped. if they were out at a park, lenny would probably grab their hand while walking on the ledge of a landscaping piece and keep it there after hopping off. that doesn’t change much once they’re together.
Who worries more for the other?
i can’t be entirely sure where kwame stands on this, but outside of lenny’s general paranoia, they don’t have much of a sense of ‘being safe’ - lennon can be super reckless, and tends not to have many ‘fucks to give’ (their words), so i can see kwame worrying more about lennon purely out of necessity
Who is more likely to ask for help?
lennon, if only because they get frustrated SO easily (actually, it’s because it’s nice that they have someone to look to for help, but that’s beside the point. they are wildly independent and have a very hard time letting themselves be taken care of. i think she asks kwame for help with little things like opening a jar/tying their boots as a way to be reminded that they’re actually there, willing to help).
Who is the one always losing the keys?
if it isn’t already clear, lennon’s scatterbrained as hell. their mom used to say “you’d lose your head if it wasn’t attached”. so definitely her.
Who leaves little love notes for the other?
they’re so gross i can see them both doing this nonstop. for some reason i’m picturing that they’re always left on unique things, though, like a pretty leaf one of them found, or neat fabric scraps, (or rolling paper).
Who can’t sleep unless the other is there?
i may be wrong about this, but i don’t know if either of them have trouble sleeping when the other isn’t around. it’s always preferable, yes, but at the end of the day, they’re not always sleepy at exactly the same time. i can see kwame returning from a late night shift at the barbershop to slide into bed with lennon as much as i can see lenny coming home after being at her parent’s house to do the same.
Who is more likely to propose to the other?
lennon just got hives reading this question. will consult with them again later.
Who introduced the other to their family first?
their friendship was so gradual/natural that i think this just came about. lennon frequents the barbershops so kwame can do whatever he wants to her hair, and has grown familiar with their family through that. additionally, lennon’s family is their entire life, so kwame has undoubtedly gotten to know that humongous crew over the years.
Who is more likely to play with the other’s hair?
this is a tie. kwame is lennon’s hairstylist and thus - by trade - they play with her hair a lot. but also, sometimes when they’re sitting there watching shows together, lenny can’t stop themselves from playing with kwame’s hair without meaning to.
Who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated?
again, i think this is a tie, but depending on how kwame feels about this, lenny might come in slightly above them. growing up in a huge house full of adoptive and foster siblings, lennon loved spending time with their mom in the kitchen making massive meals for everyone, so they’re a bit of a feeder. most of the time when kwame comes around, there’s food prepared, and they’re probably gonna make them eat it.
Who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other?
okay i feel like they both would, but again - lennon’s pretty reckless, and would probably be the one to stand up for kwame even when they don’t really need her to. basically, lennon will throw hands if someone takes the last almond milk that kwame was going for, when really they could just go for some coconutmilk instead.
Who is the most likely to prepare a surprise for the other?
again, my gut says this is going to be a tie, though i’m inclined to say kwame might take the win here simply because of how terrible lennon is at keeping a secret.
Who makes the other pinky promise not to do certain things?
okay i hate to pull this answer again, but i think it’ll have to be another tie. lennon puts great stock in the power of a pinky promise, and would undoubtedly force kwame to promise that they won’t (for example) watch westworld without her.
Who puts a blanket over the other when they fall asleep on the couch?
not that lennon wouldn’t do this for kwame, but i think kwame is more likely to do it simply based off of how often lennon falls asleep against them.

2019: reading list
Tumblr media
My annual tradition of tracking my reading for the year, and it’s led me to:
30 books
(10 non fiction/20 fiction) & (14 female authors, 13 male authors, and 3 by a mixed team)
1,681 fics at around 17.3 million (ish) words total
Compared to last year, that’s 6 more books, 3 million less words. My book count has been going up from year to year, and audiobooks help, which is nice.
The books I read in 2019, in chronological order are:
Legion vs Phalanx- Myke Cole
The Ruin of Gabriel Ashleigh-KJ Charles
Obsidio-Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
The Good Son- Jeong YouJeoung
Jane Doe- Victoria Helen Stone
The Lies that Bind- Kwame Anthgony Appiah
Bookburners- Max Gladstone, Mur Lafferty, Margaret Dunlap & Brian Francis Slattery 👎
Prisoner of my Desire- Johanna Lindsay
Witchmark - CL Polk
The Traitor Baru Cormorant- Seth Dickinson
The Last Sun- KD Charles
Band Sinister- KJ Charles
Dreyers English- Benjamin Dreyer
Ninefox Gambit- Yoon Ha Lee
It burns - Marc Fennell
Cannibalism- Bill Schitt
Gone and Mad- Rebecca Traistor
This is How You Lose the Time War- Amal El-Mohtar  & Max Gladstone
Gideon the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir 👍
The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter- Theodora Goss
A Very English Scandal- John Preston
The Founding Myth- Andrew Seidel
Leviathan Wakes- James S.A. Corey
Blowout- Rachel Maddow
Catch and Kill- Ronan Farrow
Red, White, & Royal Blue- Casey McQuiston
A Memory Called Empire- Arkady Martine
Middlegame- Seanan McGuire
Hither Page- Cat Sebastian
Caliban's War- James S.A. Corey
Gideon the Ninth was my absolute favorite book I read all year, I was literally screaming through part of the last quarter, and I am obsessed with waiting for Harrow the Ninth to come out.
Of the 30, I really disliked Bookburners the most. I got through 3/4 of it, trying to find the groove between the different authors, before finally giving up- the only book I didn't finish that's on this list, but I got most of the way there so I counted it. It was the story itself, generic, a collection of the tropes I tend to hate the most, predictable, rather than the authors, since I know I at least love other things Max Gladstone has written at least, one of them being on this list for this year that I rated 5 stars on goodreads.
Caliban's War I finished in 2 days, right on the 31st, as it was a library book I needed to return, and I figured it's give me a good chance to have this list be an even 30.
Of the nonfiction I read, I think I love Legion Vs Phalanx the most- I love the history periods there, this was super nerdy deep dive into military strategy that wasn't WWII, and the writing style worked for me.
