if trc was a visual medium and I was a tiktoker i would go insane talking about quiet luxury and how Declan and Adam both fall into this position of people with OBJECTIVELY less money compared to their peers and how both of them are trying to replicate luxury (ie: clothing=persona/identity) to varying levels of success. adam wears old gifts from the ganseys and declan is very clearly called out by other characters to be overcompensating. neither are fully seamless and even though thats not an overt plot point it is DEFINITELY very significant since plenty of their story beats echo each other down to their relationship with ronan, who is a different fashion debate (eg. how punk can you get off of a bank account you dont need to look at and a shaved head which needs to be constantly maintained and a BMW you stole w no repurcussion). again I DO think stief implies fascinating plot points that she doesn't focus on but her display of class and economic variation is very very cool & obviously people w more context of specific USAmerican culture can have this debate better than I can

God. Shiv’s season 1 anger. She’s angry at her father and she’s angry at her brothers and she’s angry at Marcia and she’s angry at “the suits”. I think maybe the only person she isn’t angry at in season 1 is Tom. And she deserves it, frankly; she’s been underestimated and shunted aside, and to a certain extent she’s cooperated in that - opted to be the one family member to choose to distance themselves from Waystar, rather than waiting for Logan to distance them - but now she’s on the outside watching her family writhe in its dysfunction, and she has no influence, just anger. But because she’s on the outside she can afford to be angry, she can indulge and express that anger in a way no one else in her family can, because she has less to lose.

She’s angry in the later seasons too, but her anger there is neutered by the fact that she’s on their side now, and she has to work for their interests, and she can’t point out the flaws and push on the weak points like she did in season 1 because she no longer has the independence she did then. Now if they go down she goes down with them. And that’s where she starts getting angry at Tom, because her anger needs to go somewhere and he’s the one person she feels she can be angry at, when she needs to, and he’s not going to go anywhere. Because that’s what marriage is, right? That’s what family is. People you can be angry at without fear of repercussions.

no bc they rlly got me with that “do you remember what he did to you? I was there” bc up to this point no one has been genuine about the abuse. They’ve used it in power plays, in weird psychosexual soliloquies, everytime someone else’s experience of abuse has been brought up it’s been transactional. Say sorry because you neglected Connor, feel an emotion because you hit Roman. But stewy… man! It was just this one last Hail Mary to get Kendal OUT. And the only way kendal knew how to respond to probably the only non-transactional ‘normal people’ exposition of abuse was trying to get his own transaction to go through while offering nothing in return because stewy showed his hand and Kendall knew he wanted Nothing but Him.

truly one of my favorite consistent writing choices in succession is that whenever there is something with massive (political or otherwise) implications at stake; the roys always argue about a dynamic they established as children.
