Honestly, there's something that really gets me about the lightning making Robin visible in a way that feels different from the whole, Fanny having the Grey Lady style/classic ghost ability to be seen in photos. Like, it's really just an extension of why they wanted to do a caveman ghost in the first place, but generally a ghost being able to be seen in photos is just like yeah, they probably died up to a few hundred years ago, that's just some regular person who's been hanging around. And the idea of them re-emerging in some way feels like making contact with something that's still pretty tangible, like, especially if they're a ghost legend they might even have a name, people will try to contextualise them with as much information as possible and the fact that that's a reasonable thing to attempt to do speaks to how closely connected someone like that still is to us.

Compared to, this is a vague, eerie outline of a person, but this isn't even an image in a photo for it to be so indistinct, this is a physical presence a handful of feet away from you and it still won't quite resolve itself into something comprehensible as a whole person even then, it's been around for thousands of years and it is still physically HERE in a way even more tangible than the presence of the recent ghost in the photograph.

Ranger's Apprentice Month Day 11: Modern au (aka Brotherband road trip)

Instead of boats, all of the Skandians drive tricked out passenger vans. Hal has a canoe strapped on top of his van next to his giant slingshot. It can hold one person, two if one of them scrunches up and doesn't move. The van is lovingly modified and has been in too many speed races and actual fights since engaging on this road trip to find the Andomal.

Stig has perpetual shotgun seat privileges but Edvin is the one who navigates the paper map. He is also in charge of food for the road.

Ingvar has never thrown someone out of the moving van (that is simply too dangerous) but he does dump a bottle of water on Ulf/Wulf when necessary.

Thorn makes the guys get out of the van and practice strength and conditioning at least once a day, usually at local parks early in the morning.

When Hal needs a break, either Stig or Stefan will drive. Stig gets priority mostly because Stefan is better at spotting cop cars amd Zavac's cronies than he is, but also due to the fact that Stefan majorly speeds (even more than Hal does) and they can't afford ANOTHER speeding ticket or police delay.

Thorn has on occasion had to pretend to be a teacher taking a group of homeschoolers on a school trip (this is more convincing than the time Stefan claimed Thorn was their youth pastor; Thorn did an okay job but Jesper got too into the lie and made it too complicated. The officer didn't end up believing they were on a road trip following in the steps of Gorlog's journey)

The aux cord gets passed around once before reverting back to a person. This process must happen three times before a person can be elected to take over the cord for an hour. Everyone gets one ultimate veto skip once per every two hours. A song be skipped otherwise if every other member votes no. This executive veto can only be used 6 times per half day. Thorn had the most used ultimate vetoes, but Stig initiates the most executive vetoes.

The most common to get vetoed are: - Wulf (deliberately picks songs he knows will get vetoed in a strategic attempt to allow Ulf to slip by more songs) - Hal (his music is meant to drone on in the background. While he can reduce it to white noise while driving, the monotonous 20 min tracks are not blockable for anyone else) - Lydia (her true crime podcasts are divisive: some find them terrifying, some find them interesting, and other find them fascinating but ultimately frustrating because Lydia plays 20 minutes of them before finishing it by herself with earbuds so the next time she gets the cord, she has a new true crime on and no one ever gets a conclusion to the first crime)

Seating from front to back goes: - Hal, Stig (driver and navigator) - Thorn, Lydia, Edvin (Edvin uses Thorn's credit card and Costco membership card the most and has to coordinate with him) - Stefan, Jesper (the prime position to throw nails out the window onto the road; Lydia also joins back here when Thorn is too much) - Wulf, Ulf, Ingvar (Wulf claimed to get motion sick to get out of the backseat but Ulf debunked that real quick; Ingvar is able to toss the twins in the trunk if desparate)

Well, I thought the "Hobbes-like" core of "Lord of the Flies" would stimulate his philosophical side, as he always seems ready to reason about human nature. Besides, I think he would enjoy imagining how he could have solved things, had he found himself in a similar situation. "Stig of the "Dump" I thought would delight his boyish side instead. And I also think he could identify himself with the protagonist of the story. You know, an adventurous kid who ends up befriending a caveman…

Love this! Ty for elaborating, lmao the second one especially is adorable. It's easy to forget how child-like he can be sometimes, but I think he would enjoy a good fun kids' story here and there too, in addition to the more intellectual stuff.

Top 5 books from your childhood/ adolescence, for the ask game

Here are some of my favourites from when I was a child.

The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson: X - Andy’s parents get divorced and she ends up living half the time with her mum's new family and half with her dad's. I didn't read many Jacqueline Wilson stories when I was a kid and from what I've heard, this is one of the less sad ones. Still a lot of relatable childhood emotional upheaval, with convincing characters and a neat conclusion. Andy always carries a toy rabbit with her, and when Radish goes missing, the bottom falls out of Andy’s world for a while, which I could fully understand. I had it on audiobook read beautifully by Lesley Dunlop.

The Queen's Nose by Dick King-Smith: X - Harmony’s uncle gives her a 50p piece that grants wishes. He sets her a treasure hunt/quiz to figure out how the magic works (spoiler: you rub the queen's nose). The 50p described was an old 1973 coin with nine interlinked hands, which represented the nine countries of the EEC. There were still some of these knocking around when I was little so whenever I got one, I tried rubbing it but I never found one that granted wishes. Our heroine loves animals and can't really relate to people until she's decided what animal they would be, which was a really fun aspect of this one.

Pongwiffy: A Witch of Dirty Habits by Kaye Umansky: X - Pongwiffy is a funny, filthy witch who lives on a rubbish dump. Her familiar is a badly-behaved thug of a hamster. She has a prissy best friend who despairs of her stinky ways. Just good fun, anarchic stories about naughty witches, which probably set me up to fall for the Msses Weatherwax and Ogg a bit later. A few years ago I met Kaye Umansky at a book festival and I was so awed to meet the creator of Pongwiffy. She was very gracious.

The Bear Nobody Wanted by Janet and Allan Ahlberg: X - A teddy bear learns to be happy when he gets over his own pride. This was a charming story set during WW2. The book tells us that toys get their personalities from their outward appearance. (In retrospect this is a bit problematic, but go with it.) This bear comes off the factory line with a slightly supercilious expression, making him not quite loveable, so he gets thrown in the reject bin. He goes through a series of adventures and owners. The more bashed about he becomes, the more his nature softens. Finally after being gnawed by a dog, strapped to the front of a dustcart, bombed in the Blitz, and repaired by a kind lady in a toy hospital – he ends up with a kind expression, a kinder heart, and a home to call his own.

Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer: X - On her first night in boarding school, Charlotte goes to sleep and wakes up 40 years earlier in 1918, and finds everyone is calling her Clare. Meanwhile, Clare has woken up in Charlotte's time. Charlotte and Clare spend alternating nights in each other's lives, until one night Charlotte gets trapped in 1918 and then spends several weeks there with Clare's little sister, the only one to know her secret. Can the girls get back to their own times? This is a genuinely haunting book that poses sophisticated questions about identity, dreams and memory. Charlotte even starts to doubt herself and forget who she really is. I recently read this as an adult and I enjoyed it so much. In the same vein of 'child slips through time during the night' as the more famous Tom's Midnight Garden and Stig of the Dump. (Fun fact, The Cure wrote a gloomy song inspired by this book.)

ALSO: I'd recommend Bookworm by Lucy Mangan: X for a lovely and funny memoir of childhood reading.

Three ships: Oooh, I'm currently going through a Ron/Hermione phaze at the moment. So Ron & Hermione (from the books), Xena and Gabrielle (obviously) and Derek & Casey (because I'm a lunk of trash)

First ever ship: My very first ship was possibly, now that think about it, Diana & Anne & Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables. I shipped Diana and Gilbert as friends because Diana's a lesbian obviously. I shipped Anne and Diana as childhood sweethearts because Diana was Anne's First love. And I shipped Anne and Gilbert for the long haul because he's her adult love.

Currently Reading: Stig of the Dump in book form and I'm actually re-listening to Harry Potter audiobook (on youtube - I'm not paying for it) because I wanted to re-visit the story as an adult to see if I notice anything different. And regarding the author, I'm paying her no mind because that's excatly what she wants, is attention. It doesn't change the words she wrote, which is ironically the oppersite of what she's been saying lately.

Currently Watching: The 'A Very Potter Musicals' - they're the best.
