SAINTS OF THE DAY (May 21)
Tumblr media
“Long live Christ the King and the Virgin of Guadalupe!”
This was the slogan of the "Cristero Uprising" in the 1920’s against the anti-Catholic government of Mexico, which had instituted and enforced laws against the Church.
It was an absurd attempt to eradicate the Catholic faith in Mexico, even going so far as to ban all foreign clergy and the celebration of Mass in some regions.
Christopher Magallanes, along with 21 other priests and three lay companions, were martyred between 1915 and 1937, by shooting or hanging, throughout eight Mexican states, for their membership in the Cristero movement.
Magallanes erected a seminary in Totatiche, where he and his companions secretly preached and ministered to the faithful.
The last words heard spoken by Magallanes were from his cell, when he shouted:
"I am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico."
The Cristero martyrs were beatified on 22 November 1992 and were canonized on 21 May 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
NOTE:
The Cristero War, also known as the Cristero Rebellion or La Cristiada, was a widespread struggle in central and western Mexico from 1 August 1926 to 21 June 1929 in response to the implementation of secularist and anticlerical articles of the 1917 Constitution.
The rebellion was instigated as a response to an executive decree by Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles to strictly enforce Article 130 of the Constitution, a decision known as Calles Law.
Calles sought to eliminate the power of the Catholic Church in Mexico, its affiliated organizations, and to suppress popular religiosity.

TEACH ME ABBA FATHER TO SEE YOUR LOVE FOR ME AS MY GUIDE IN EVERY EVENT IN MY LIFE. YOUR MIGHTY, MERCIFUL AND MYSTERIOUS PROVIDENCE IS ALWAYS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING. ALL SEASONS. ALL TRIALS & PERSECUTIONS.
"Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me." (John 15: 18 - 21).
Saturday 21st May 2022, in the 5th Week of Easter is also the feast of St Christopher Magallanes (1869 - 1927), Priest and his companions martyrs. The Mexican government was very anti-Catholic and anti clerical in the 1920s. It massacred the 21 priests and 3 lay men during the Cristeros movement between 1915 and 1937. Our Gospel of today warns us to be prepared for persecution. The Cristeros members were ready for the murderous persecution unleashed by the Mex
Mexican government.
The Gospel for today shows the reality and certainty of persecution in the Christian ministry. The disciple of Christ is the bearer of the Good News. He is kind, gentle and generous in his ways. Naturally he expects to be welcomed with smiles and open arms. This does not always happen. What he may experience may be outright rejection of his person and his message. He is treated as a bearer of Bad News who deserves persecution.
This is why Jesus teaches naive disciples this basic lesson: Remember! Remember! Remember! Forget this lesson and you will be fried as a fish. I Jesus am the Lord, you are my servants. I am the Rabbi. You are my disciples. The people I am sent to, reject My message. They curse me and maltreat me. Before your eyes, they will crucify Me. Tell Me honestly: How do you think they will treat you? You bear my name. My name provokes their hatred.
Since God cursed the Ancient Serpent, the warfare between Satan and man has not abated:  "From now on you and the woman will be enemies, as will your offspring and hers. You will strike his heel, but he will crush your head.” (Genesis 3: 15).
We see in the Old Testament, the types and shadows of the persecuted Jesus Christ:
Abel persecuted by Cain, Jacob by Esau, Joseph by his brethren, David by Saul, Elijah by Ahab. These are examples to drive home the teaching of Jesus.
If the disciples of Jesus do not take special care to study the Scriptures and remember the message of Jesus, they will merit a rebuke from the Master:
“You are such foolish, foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures!  Wasn’t it clearly predicted by the prophets that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his time of glory?” (CF Luke 24: 25).
Never forget the words and works of the Lord. Because the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. (Cf Revelation 19: 10).
5. 21 "While saying the joyful mysteries :
I received My human face from My Mother. When you contemplate My Face, it is her beauty that you are contemplating. I received My created beauty from My Mother. My uncreated beauty is the radiance of the glory of the Father on My humanity." (IN SINU JESU).

May 21 is the feast day of St. Christopher Magallanes, priest and Companions, Mexican martyrs
Life of St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions
Tumblr media

“Long live Christ the King and the Virgin of Guadalupe!”
This was the slogan of the “Cristero” uprising in the 1920’s against the anti-Catholic government of Mexico which had instituted and enforced laws against the Church in an absurd attempt to eradicate the Catholic faith in Mexico, even going so far as to ban all foreign clergy and the celebration of Mass in some regions.
St. Christopher Magallanes, along with 21 other priests and three lay companions, were martyred between 1915 and 1937, by shooting or hanging, throughout eight Mexican states, for their membership in the Cristero movement. Magallanes erected a seminary in Totatiche and he and his companions secretly preached and ministered to the faithful.
The last words heard spoken by Magallanes were from his cell, when he shouted, "I am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico".

Almighty and eternal God, who made the Priest Saint Christopher Magallanes and his companions faithful to Christ the King even to the point of martyrdom, grant us, through their intercession, that, persevering in confession of the true faith, we may always hold fast to the commandments of your love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PERSON TO PERSON
“Do you love Me?” —John 21:15, 16, 17
Christianity is the only religion in history to believe in the Incarnation, that is, in God becoming a man. Thus, only Christians believe we can have a personal relationship with God as a person. The uniqueness and essence of Christianity is personal relationship, communion, intimacy, and love. Some would argue that Jesus’ Ascension ends the opportunity for a personal relationship with God because we can no longer see, hear, and feel Jesus’ physical body.  Yet, Jesus promised: “It is much better for you that I go. If I fail to go, the Paraclete will never come to you” (Jn 16:7). By the power of the Spirit, we can have a personal relationship with the body of Jesus in two new ways. “It was in one Spirit that all of us, whether Jew or Greek, slave or free, were baptized into one body” (1 Cor 12:13). In the Spirit, we become members of Christ’s Body, the Church. Although the Church is not Christ’s physical Body, it is truly His Body (see Acts 9:4; Mt 25:40; Mt 18:20) through which we can have a personal relationship with God. The Spirit also opens us to Jesus’ Body in the Eucharist (see Acts 2:42) by which we can relate to Jesus so personally that we live in Him and He in us (see Jn 6:56).It’s better for us that Jesus ascended. By the Spirit, we now can have a much more intimate, personal relationship with God by becoming part of His Body, the Church, and by receiving God into our bodies in Holy Communion. The third Person of the Trinity makes possible a continuing, deeper, personal relationship with God.
Prayer:  Father, when I receive Communion and hear the words “Body of Christ,” may I say “Amen” with a greater love than ever.
Promise:  “They differed with him over issues in their own religion, and about a certain Jesus Who had died but Who Paul claimed is alive.” —Acts 25:19
Praise:  A martyr, St. Christopher Magallanes preached peace. He was martyred on his way to Mass.

“Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” (John 21: 15).
Friday 21st May 2021, in the 7th Week of Easter is also the feast of St Christopher Megallanes (1869 - 1927), Priest and his companions martyrs. The Mexican government was very anti-Catholic and anti clerical in the 1920s. It massacred 21 priests and 3 lay men during the Cristeros movement.
Peter denied Jesus three times. After the Resurrection, Jesus met the Apostles on the shores of Lake Tiberius. Jesus offered Peter the opportunity for complete reconciliation. Peter confirmed three times that he loves Jesus dearly. Jesus confirmed Peter's leadership of the Church.
What if Jesus asks us: Do you love me more than your family? Do you love me more than your job, money, country? Consider carefully how you respond to the Lord. Peter was very presumptuous before the Passion of Christ to claim that he loved Jesus more than the rest of the Apostles.
Our love for Jesus may not be perfect. But this love can grow through our openness to receive the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. The highest proof of love is for a man to lay down his life for his friends. This is what our saints of the day did. St Christopher Magallanes and his 21 companion martyrs laid down their lives for their faith in Jesus in Mexico. As Tertulian prophesied: "The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christianity."
St Peter and the other Apostles would lay down their lives to prove their love for Christ.

Revisiting the Unseen Corners of the World On the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, with journey restrictions in place worldwide, we launched a brand new collection to assist transport you, just about, to a few of our planet’s most lovely and intriguing locations. This week, after 40 installments, we glance again at a few of the highlights — from hat-making workshops in Ecuador and the wilds of Alaska to lush Zambian valleys. A decade in the past, the photographer Robert Presutti accompanied a pal to a convent in rural Georgia: the Phoka Nunnery of St. Nino. A nun and two novices had moved to the world years earlier and had begun resurrecting an Eleventh-century church from its ruins. Led by the abbess, Elizabeth, the group of three slowly grew, in order that by the point Mr. Presutti visited, the convent comprised six nuns and one novice. By then, the church had been utterly restored. Caleb Kenna has labored as a contract photographer for greater than 20 years, touring Vermont’s again roads, making portraits and capturing the state’s diverse landscapes. Till a number of years in the past, he employed airplanes to climb skyward and create aerial footage. These days he makes use of a drone. Yearly, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims descend on Karbala, a often quiet desert metropolis in central Iraq, to commemorate the spiritual vacation of Arbaeen, one of many largest organized gatherings of individuals on this planet. In 2019, when a small group of journalists was invited to attend, the photojournalist Andrea DiCenzo jumped on the likelihood to go. The occasion is a spectacular show of grief, mourning and spiritual ecstasy. It commemorates the loss of life of considered one of Shiite Islam’s most vital leaders, Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. “Lately, Iraqis and Iranians have been joined by a whole bunch of hundreds of spiritual vacationers from a rising variety of international locations exterior the Center East, together with the UK, Bosnia, Pakistan, Malaysia and Australia.” Andrea DiCenzo Learn extra about Arbaeen » The Tshiuetin line is a distant railway that runs by means of rural Quebec. Named after the Innu phrase for “wind of the north,” it’s the first railway in North America owned and operated by First Nations individuals — and has grow to be an emblem of reclamation and defiance. Since 2015, throughout her many journeys aboard the practice, the photographer Chloë Ellingson has documented the passengeres, the route and the communities it serves. “On any given journey on the Tshiuetin practice, most passengers are regulars. Some are heading to searching grounds — like Stéphane Lessard, whom I met en path to his pal’s cabin, which he has been frequenting for 17 years.” Chloë Ellingson Learn extra concerning the Tshiuetin line » A Montecristi superfino Panama hat is creamy as silk, costlier by weight than gold, and the colour of high-quality previous ivory. It’s as a lot a murals as it’s of vogue. The best specimens have greater than 4,000 weaves per sq. inch, a weave so high-quality it takes a jeweler’s loupe to rely the rows. And each single a kind of weaves is finished by hand. No loom is used — solely dexterous fingers, sharp eyes and Zen-like focus. The author and photographer Roff Smith took an interest within the hats about 15 years in the past, when he examine straw hats that might value many hundreds of {dollars}. Sea lions are also known as “canine of the ocean.” On a small island off the Baja coast, the place the playful animals populate each rocky outcropping, they dwell as much as their nickname. The photojournalist Benjamin Lowy visited the world in 2017 on considered one of his first underwater assignments, after years spent masking warfare, politics and sports activities. Though extremely appreciated by safari aficionados, Zambia has lengthy flown underneath the radar for first-time guests to Africa, overshadowed by its higher recognized regional neighbors: Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana and South Africa. However this landlocked nation boasts a few of the continent’s finest nationwide parks, primarily these lining the crocodile- and hippo-infested Luangwa River. The photographer Marcus Westberg first set eyes on the muddy-brown Luangwa when he was 23 years previous. He’s been again — and to the neighboring Luambe and North Luangwa nationwide parks — half a dozen instances since. “In Zambia, there’s one thing for everybody. The wildlife viewing in elements of South Luangwa can rival that of most of Africa’s high safari locations. In Luambe it’s possible you’ll actually have a complete park to your self.” Marcus Westberg Learn extra about wildlife in Zambia » Three miles off the coast of Maine, in a distant space northeast of Acadia Nationwide Park, lies a cluster of islands populated solely by sheep. The Wakeman household, who dwell on the close by mainland, are the year-round caretakers; they keep the traditions of island shepherding, the cycles of which have been largely unchanged for hundreds of years. On the finish of lambing season, a neighborhood gathers to assist spherical up and shear the sheep. The volunteers — round 40 individuals — embody a handful of knitters and spinners; they typically put on sweaters made from Nash Island wool. The photographer Greta Rybus started documenting the Wakemans and the islands in 2019. “Among the sheep spend their total lives on these islands, from beginning to loss of life. They grow to be the islands. Their sun-bleached bones are entrenched within the earth, embedded within the grassy knolls and wetlands the place they as soon as grazed.” Galen Koch and Greta Rybus Learn extra about island shepherding in Maine » Southeast Alaska is inseparable from the Tongass Nationwide Forest, with the mountainous western fringe of the North American continent giving strategy to the a whole bunch of islands that make up the Alexander Archipelago. The panorama is blanketed with Western hemlock, purple and yellow cedars, and Sitka spruce. However the lifting of logging restrictions might indelibly alter the area’s character. After coordinating with native academic authorities and academics, and with the blessing of the scholars’ mother and father and guardians, the photojournalist Andria Hautamaki spent over a month in 2019 touring to 5 such colleges. “The coronavirus pandemic has upended academic routines throughout the globe, and many colleges in Chile have pivoted to distant studying. However rural Chilean colleges face notably tough challenges.” Andria Hautamaki Learn extra about rural Patagonian colleges » A number of years in the past, the photographer Richard Frishman started to doc vestiges of racism, oppression and segregation in America’s constructed and pure environments — lingering traces that have been hidden in plain sight behind a veil of banality. A few of Mr. Frishman’s footage seize websites that have been unmarked, missed or largely forgotten. Different images discover the Black establishments that arose in response to racial segregation. A handful of the images depict the websites the place Black individuals have been attacked, killed or kidnapped — some marked and extensively recognized, some not. “Slavery is also known as America’s ‘unique sin.’ Its demons nonetheless hang-out us within the type of segregated housing, schooling, well being care, employment. Via these images, I’m making an attempt to protect the bodily proof of that sin — as a result of, when the telling traces are erased, the teachings threat being misplaced.” Richard Frishman Learn extra concerning the “Ghosts of Segregation” » The waters surrounding Britain are speckled with hundreds of small islands, solely a small fraction of that are inhabited. Catholic Mass Reading: 21 May 2020 - The Ascension Of The Lord
Tumblr media
Thursday May 21, 2020 THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD (SOLEMNITY) (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Vestment: White Today’s Rosary: The Luminous Mysteries THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD. A Community with Its Eyes on the Earth. The gospel and the first reading recount how Jesus entered the glory of his Father. But the images used are not easy for us to understand and we run the risk of looking on the feast of Ascension with our eyes raised to the sky. This is exactly the opposite of what we should do. It is a feast that invites us  to look to earth, to people among whom we are called to make present the work of the Master. Though Jesus was no longer visible, the disciples were full of joy and the gospel hints at the reason for it. And these same reasons should cause us to be joyful too. The second reading completes the message. Even though we must keep our eyes on the earth, we know that human life is not enclosed by it nor does it end within the narrow confines of this world.
Kindly join us as we embark on a 9-day Novena with fasting and prayers to the Holy Spirit in Preparation for Pentecost from Friday May 22nd to Saturday May 30th.

Entrance Antiphon   Acts 1:11 Men of Galilee, why gaze in wonder at the heavens? This Jesus whom you saw ascending into heaven will return as you saw him go, alleluia.
The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is said.
Collect Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving, for the Ascension of Christ your Son is our exaltation, and where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope. Through our Lord...
Or:
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we who believe that your Only Begotten Son, our Redeemer, ascended this day to the heavens, may in spirit dwell already in heavenly realms. Who lives and reigns with you. . .
FIRST READING “As they were looking on, he was lifted up.” The beginning  of the Acts  of the Apostles (Acts 1 : 1- 11)
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, for John baptised with water, but before many days you shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said this, as they  were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
The word of the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM       Psalm 47:2-3.6-7.8-9 (R. 6) R/. God has gone up with shouts of joy. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});     The Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Or: Alleluia.
All peoples, clap your hands. Cry to God with shouts of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, the great king over all the earth. R.
God goes up with shouts of joy.    The Lord goes up with trumpet blast. Sing praise for God; sing praise! Sing praise to our king; sing praise! R.
God is king of all the earth. Sing praise with all your skill. God reigns over the nations. God sits upon his holy throne. R.
SECOND READING  “He made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places.” A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (Ephesians 1:17-23)
Brethren: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having  the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which  he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might which he accomplished in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come; and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the Church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
The word of the Lord.
ALLELUIA Matthew 28: 19a.20b Alleluia. Go and make disciples of all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, to the close of the age. Alleluia.
GOSPEL               “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. ” The conclusion of the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 28: 16-20)
At that time: The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and be- hold, I am with you  always, to the close of the  age.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Prayer of the faithful Christ ascends to his Father.
PRIEST: On the day when Jesus Christ our Lord ascended into heaven, we make our prayers to God our Father, trusting that he will answer them out of love for his Son.
READER:        FOR THE CHURCH, WITH MESSAGE OF VICTORY, (pause) may she, whose Lord is in heaven, know that he is with her always to the end of time. (pause) Lord, hear us, through your Son; who sits at your right hand in glory we pray Oh Lord.
FOR THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE, (pause) may all Christians, by their example of joy and hope, be the spiritual leaders of our world, by proclaiming that the victory over sin has been won by the Lord Jesus. (pause) Lord, hear us, through your Son; who sits at your right hand in glory we pray Oh Lord.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE TROUBLED BY MATERIAL WORRIES, (pause) may they lift up their eyes to the Risen Lord, and in him find the strength and inspiration to put spiritual values as the priority in their lives. pause Lord, hear us, through your Son; who sits at your right hand in glory we pray Oh Lord.
FOR THE DYING MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY, (pause) may they be filled with pace, through Christ’s ascension into heaven, and trust that he has gone before them to prepare a place of unending joy and life. (pause) Lord, hear us, through your Son; who sits at your right hand in glory we pray Oh Lord.
In silence, we make our private petitions to God our Father in Heaven.
PRIEST:  Father, just as your Son ascended to you, may our prayers rise up before your throne, and may our requests. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
  Today's Reflection
St Luke begins the Acts of the Apostles with a detailed account of the Ascension of the Lord. The activities of the early church begin with the departure of the Lord. At the Ascension scene, the disciples stood still, looking up to heaven in wonder and amazement. It’s hard to describe their feelings as their Lord and Master disappeared from their sight. However, the two men in white robes reminded them of their new responsibility in the event of the ascension of the Lord. “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven…?” this means that they have to go to the ends of the earth to be his witnesses, as Jesus had mandated them to. They have a mission to fulfil by moving out of their comfort zones to the dusty roads of suffering and struggle with the good news. They are assured of the accompaniment of the Lord in their mission: “… and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Although he sits “at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and above every name that is named,” he continues to live in our hearts, our homes and in our communities. Lord, make me your humble servant always.
Personal Devotional: Day 21 May Devotion
In her role as the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of the Church the Blessed Virgin Mary did not disappoint. She gave her all in taking care of Jesus and she extended the same care and commitment to taking care of us her beloved children.
A good mother will always be there for her children no matter the situation. She was there at calvary and she was also there at the upper room taking care of the apostles. We must honour her always as our Mother and go to her in prayers to seek her maternal help and  intercession for the needs of our lives. She took care of Jesus and she will take care of us if we let her be our Mother also.
Meditation: Genesis 3:9-15, 20/Acts 1:12-14
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us your Mother to be the Mother of the Church. May we learn from her to love the Church and to do our best to do your will always so that  we will be with you in heaven on the last day. Amen. *And May the Almighty God bless you: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Today's Saint St Christopher Magallanes, P, & Companions, M. Christopher was born in 1869 in Mexico and as a priest, distinguished himself for his faith and apostolic zeal. He was sent as a missionary among the ‘Huichole’ and spread devotion to Our Lady through the Rosary. He was loved by his confreres because of his wisdom and guidance. Having shown care for vocations, when the seminary of Guadalajara was closed because of the persecutions against the Church, he took care of the seminary by hosting them in his mission. On 25 May 1927 he was killed because of his faith along with another priest, Agustin Caloca, and several lay people.

So yeah, it’s a new year, I have a blog and all that jazz…
We’re half a month into 2017. We’ll have a new president before the week is out. I’ve been back to school two whole weeks and…yeah, I know you’re bored already. Long before Advent I had my patron saint for 2017, St Christopher Magallanes, the Cristero martyr. But the Holy Spirit had a surprise for me in the form of a smiling, hunched over Albanian born nun in a white sari with blue trim. Back in…
