Hi! You don't have to answer this if you don't want to, that's totally fine! But you talking about Orville Peck's appropriation of indigenous culture with his fashion choices made me realize that I had never considered that there might be some aspects of "cowboy clothes" that white ppl shouldn't wear and that was super wrong of me. Again, you totally don't have to answer this, but I was just wondering what ways a white person could wear "cowboy clothes" in a manner that wasn't disrespectful? Or perhaps, should we not wear them at all? I can't afford T yet, but when I can finally get it I was planning on getting a cowboy outfit to embrace my trans mascness, but if that would be wrong of me I can scrap that plan no problem!
Ehhh again this is actually SUPER HARD to answer because almost everything about cowboy fashion & the cowboy "aesthetics" are lifted directly from Native American fashion and culture, either because a lot of cowboys back in the day were Native American themselves (including Afro-Natives & Indigenous Mexican vaqueros) or they were White & just kinda. stole the look from the Native cowboys due to a number of factors.
If you google "cowboy jewelry" the first thing that comes up is silverwork & belts & turquoise jewelry, which is taken from Navajo metalwork. Fringed leather clothing? Again, many Native tribes did that (& in some tribes the fringes could mean something, its not just for looks), most popularily with vests, jackets, and pants. A lot if the leather jackets were a result of Native women just sewing their clothes the same but in a European styled cut. Compare this "cowboy" look below to a Lakota war shirt: both have hair embellishments dangling from the arms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Studded belts? Inspired by Cheyenne mirror belts, which often also have metal studs in them & you'll still see Native pow wow dancers have this in their regalia. Floral vests? A lot of the inspiration comes from Plains floral beadwork. Geometric patterns and blankets? Came from Southwest or Mexican Native American blankets & designs, ask any Navajo weaver & they'll tell you the same. Feathers in cowboy hats? Who else is famous for wearing feathers on their heads--? Native Americans. The look is still popular with older Native men.
Hell, if you visit this site that sells Western/cowboy fashion, you'll see a SHITTON of appropriation going on, taking Native imagery & designs, including one taken from Native American ledger art, all on White models.
Tumblr media
The appropriation of Native culture and fashion in the cowboy/western sphere is ongoing, and the influence that Native fashion & culture has in Western/cowboy fashion as it is is absolutely MASSIVE. I once said in another post that the cowboy/western aesthetic essentially belongs to Native Americans, Latines (especially Mexicans), and Black people. And the history of White cowboys has been one largely of colonialism, racism, and displacement of Indigenous peoples, and the masculinity associated with White cowboys especially is also steeped into racism & American patriotism (think John Wayne. There's a reason he's an American icon who played cowboys & killing Indians in films.). I think the only thing that isn't influenced from either appropriation or colonization is like, jeans. Even the style of cowboy boots themselves and potentially chaps were influenced from vaqueros.
So if you're White I'm not sure that'd exactly be a good route to take because trying to seperate Indigenous elements from this fashion/look (nevermind the problematic history of White cowboys) is almost impossible. Obviously I can't force you to do anything, but honestly if I were you, I'd try a different direction, because otherwise I think you'll find trying to do this will be very hard.

it wouldn’t be the linda fairbairn extended universe without air caledonian! (enlarge for better quality. notes below)
(a320 illustrations provided for free personal use)
i spent almost eight hours total doing this and i do not regret a single minute of it 😮‍💨😮‍💨
the liveries
literally fought for my life with the clipping masks 😵‍💫
Tumblr media
this is my attempt at a ‘retro’ livery which was sort of teased in late 2022
it combines a few elements that saw some vogue in the 70s (the cheatline, or the stripe running down the fuselage) and the hockey stick (the cheatline being carried up into the tail, which i…sort of did…to incorporate it into the saltire) combined with an element that didn’t really become popular until after the 70s (the ‘eurowhite’ color scheme that forced me to invert the saltire)
if caledonian’s origins can be traced back to regional flights in the very late 70s, slowly growing the fleet until acquiring the A320 to expand its range, i’d want it to have a sort of ‘retro’ looking livery. the original planes probably wouldn’t have been white, though. most likely aluminum
i used helvetica for the name of the airline on the side of the fuselage, which also happens to look very similar to the font of choice for philippine airlines. i did not realize this until after i’d exported it because my dad looked over my shoulder and commented.
Tumblr media
this is their ‘redesign’ livery and the last one before the acquisition. i’d previously depicted a version of it back in 2021 but when i tried it for size parts of it looked so horrifying that i had to change it up a bit
caledonian has always existed in my head as some mix of ‘national carrier’ and ‘budget airline’ swinging a little more toward the latter for purposes of the lfeu so the bold color scheme and billboard style is honestly inspired by airlines like southwest (thank god they’re not shit brown anymore), easyjet (easy go… and thee air caledonian blueprint), and spirit (highlighter planes)
the saltire was literally me messing around with brushes and realizing like hmmmm. this actually looks pretty neat! now i know i’ve been saying air caledonian’s probably a budget airline, but as stated before, it’s also got some elements of the national carrier thing going, which is why i’m so insistent on the saltire motif
not to do with the livery but i also think since cal exists in that grey area they do have certain elements of a Not Low Cost Airline (like business class vs economy seats…i mean you’re not lying flat in any of these planes lol but you can have a kit if the pilots didn’t burgle the socks out of them) and that could have financially hurt them which would make selling out to swiss more appealing and less wounding that a ‘national carrier’ is being chopped. idk how this works though. im playing with airlines like dolls
the uniforms
i love designing uniforms. actually i love uniforms in general. i miss wearing a school uniform i did not have to think about what to wear on a daily basis. i could commit time to silly fanfiction and my meager attempts at making my own drawing style
qantas did not have tailored uniforms for differing body types until 2016 but this is fiction and the chief pilot of air cal is canonically a #GirlDad. we have tailored uniforms here. and a hat/tie variant. and a skirt option.
i reasoned since air caledonian is a scottish airline it should have formalized cold weather uniform requirements and i saw some rly cute pullover sweaters (think they were on easyjet pilots) so those went in
also the reason hats are required with the trench coat is for easy recognizability. this is indeed a policy at some airlines. martin crieff does have a point here.
oh also i darkened the jackets and trousers lol i just felt like it looked better
i think that’s all i wanted to say…

Recently, jackets have been gaining in popularity as a fashionable accessory for all kinds of weather. But according to Cornish fashion experts, these garments have a long history in the region, as they have been a staple of Cornish dress for generations.
Cornwall is a region of the United Kingdom, located in the far southwest corner of the country. The historic region has retained many of its unique cultural features and traditions, including dress in the form of traditional clothing. Jackets are just one of these pieces of garment which have been part of Cornish culture for many years.
The traditional jacket in Cornwall is typically made from a hard wearing woolen fabric, designed to withstand the elements. They are usually fitted around the waist and come in a variety of colors. This type of attire allowed them to stay warm and dry in the rough climate of Cornwall, while also providing a stylish item for more socially acceptable occasions.
In the modern era, jackets remain a popular choice among both men and women across the region. As a result, jackets have become a symbol of Cornish fashion, and a staple of regional dress. They can be seen proudly worn in towns, cities, and even the countryside of Cornwall.
Aside from being a practical and fashionable garment, jackets have a deeper connection to the people of Cornwall. In days past, they were used by the miners, fishermen and farmers of the region – providing protection from the elements while they worked. Today, jackets are still proudly worn by Cornish locals, a sign of their history and heritage.
Ultimately, jacket are an iconic piece of Cornish fashion, and a reminder of the region's rich history. Whether they are worn for practical purposes or fashion, jackets are a unique part of Cornish dress and a symbol of the people who call the region home.

. . .
look at my eyes
. . .
“Muinín dom.”
A strange rush flows under Connor’s skin from the sound of Elena’s voice speaking pure Irish so confidently. Sure, she’s American, but she could easily fool anyone that she’s 100% Irish. He drops his shoulders as she runs her hand through her hair, pulling the strands away from her exhausted face and showing she’s still wearing the gold sparrow earrings.
Trust me.
“Aye,” he says with a deep breath, inhaling the scent of her sweat mingled with death filling the room.
Murphy nods in agreement, and Elena instructs them to go down the back staircase, and she’ll meet them with the car at the corner of 5th and State, located three blocks southwest.
While Elena wraps a proper bandage around her hand in the bathroom, Connor and Murphy carefully inspect the bodies of her attackers. Murphy moves to the guy by the broken mirror while Connor takes the other masked man Elena had just shot. They pull up the men’s masks, searching their memory to see if they recognize the faces. Strangely, the guy in the hallway has dark hair, while the second in the living room has lighter brown hair. The brothers look at each other, their faces pale as if seeing their own ghosts. They quickly pull up the black sleeves on each dead arm and, fortunately, find the arms are clean, with no tattoos matching their own. The fast, terrifying thought that they were already being set up still hangs between them, but they let out simultaneous sighs of relief that, for now, it’s just a thought.
Connor looks back down at his respective dead body as Murphy stands behind him. Both men have no other items on them except for their knives: no identification, no money, no cell phone. Then Connor spots a black metal watch on the man’s wrist. He slides the watch off and looks it over curiously. Nothing stands out except for a symbol engraved on the back of the watch, a strange geometric design that he’s never seen before.
Elena reappears in a black jacket, and Connor quickly drops the watch in his coat pocket. She raises an eyebrow, splitting her attention between the two brothers. “You ready?”
After Elena disappears down the back staircase, the brothers rush down the other staircase at the far end of the hall. They turn right once they push the fire door open and land on the sidewalk, discreetly dipping into an alley two buildings south.
The night air is quiet and unfamiliar. Hell, just three days ago, they were still incarcerated. Until Danny Finch slipped Connor into an isolated cell that served as the gateway to their escape. It was immediately after Finch had gotten Connor from his therapy session, when Connor thought Elena was the “little bird” they were waiting for…when Connor didn’t say goodbye.
Murphy told him he was a fool for wanting to see Elena just to say goodbye. But Connor, as always, convinced his brother that he had a plan, and they would be in and out within minutes. “This is just something I have to do, Murph,” he tried to explain. Even though he didn’t understand it himself, he knew he’d never forgive himself if he didn’t say something.
But they didn’t expect to hear the screaming, struggling, and gunshots coming from her apartment. For a moment, Connor thought they were going to save her. And then seeing her on top of that dead body like a dominating force of nature made him feel something he hadn’t felt in a long time.
“So much for yer plan, yeah?” Murphy teased as they turned left at the end of the alley.
“Oh, don’t even start,” Connor snaps.
Murphy throws his hands up in sheer frustration. “Who knows what we’ve gotten ourselves into now with this broad! All because ye wanted to say goodbye like a fucking pussy.”
Connor stops and fast grabs a fistful of Murphy’s coat, pulling his brother close to look him square in the eye. “Look, we’ll go with her just this once, and then we’re on our own. You and me.”
Strangely, Murphy doesn’t react or throw a snarky response as Connor holds onto his coat. Connor can feel how red his face is and how white his knuckles are gripping his brother. He loosens his hand, and Murphy’s shoulders slump while he keeps his eyes on Connor.
Murphy adjusts his coat, and both men start walking again. Neither one had to say anything; they knew they had to keep moving.
They reach 5th Street and spot a dark grey Honda Civic parked with the engine running. Elena rolls down the window, and Connor climbs into the backseat, leaving Murphy to ride shotgun. Ignoring Murphy’s smirk and side-eye glance as Elena shifts the car into gear, Connor notices her eyes in the rearview mirror. He looks behind them, watching for anyone who might be following.
Connor’s nerves vibrate with the hum of the car, trying not to dwell on the questions he wants to ask out loud.
“So, where are we going to, lass?” Murphy breaks the silence with his trademark snark.
“To church.”
Grinning, Murphy twists his head to look at Connor. “Aye, she did say she was Catholic, too, huh?” Connor keeps his smile reserved.
“There’s a church just outside the city. That’s where you were supposed to go after you escaped.”
Connor and Murphy shoot wide-eyed glances at each other, and Murphy turns his face back to Elena. “Ye knew?”
She inhales slowly as she shifts into the next gear. “I am a rogue CIA agent working with Agent Smecker to establish an underground network that will support you two in your mission, calling, whatever you want to call it.”
Connor’s chest feels tight while Murphy quickly calls out one detail. “Smecker’s dead.”
Elena laughs, rubbing her forehead. “God damn it, he’s going to give me so much crap for this. He wanted to surprise you.” She shakes her head, smiling, and shifting eye contact between each twin. “He’s alive. Asshole faked his death back in 2003.”
The twins are slack-jawed, something that doesn’t happen often, until Murphy turns back to Connor, and they burst out in laughter. “Fucking Smecker! Badass motherfucker!” Murphy exclaims.
“Fucking Smecker!” Connor echoes in between giggles. “Talk about shit ye see in the movies.”
“He did it for you two. So he could set this whole thing up for you.”
That familiar heavy sense of benevolence floods Connor’s brain, like all those years ago when he overheard Smecker’s confession to the priest. The FBI agent admitted that he wanted to help the boys, and that he felt what they were doing was right. Kill all that which is evil. Both Connor and Murphy had already sensed the good in Smecker when he interviewed them about the Chekov incident. And they were right in trusting Smecker to look out for them.
Connor bites his lip and looks at Elena’s eyes in the rearview again. She glances up at him, catching his stare, and he takes a deep breath. “We thought ye were just a therapist.”
Shifting the car again, Elena focuses on the road ahead but softly explains everything to them. “Look, those therapy sessions were real. My job was to ensure you boys had the right mindset to return to work.”
The road ahead is beginning to get swallowed up into darkness as the city’s lights fade behind them. Connor rubs his face, opening his mouth as if he is going to say something. Nothing. He’s not sure what to feel or think or say.
“And don’t give me the whole ‘real men hide their feelings’ bullshit again,” Elena speaks up. “You can’t go to hell and back unscathed.”
Murphy smiles, nodding his head in agreement and seemingly accepting the newly acquired information about Elena Jensen. Connor, however, can’t hide the hurt that coats his voice as he asks, “Why didn’t ye tell us?”
Elena looks in the mirror again, her green eyes soft and reassuring. “It wasn’t part of the plan.”

Gone with the Wind? Underwater Cultural Heritage and Wind Power Dilemma in Penghu
By Shannon Chang, Emma Shen, Wendy Lo, and KC Yang
Tumblr media
Penghu, located at the heart of the Taiwan Strait, has historically been surrounded by major navigational routes. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, vessels traveling between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan often used Penghu as a stopover on their route.
In the 19th century, international trade routes also passed through the northern waters of Penghu. A large number of merchant and fishing vessels traversed this area over centuries. However, the waters near Penghu are affected by strong winds and unpredictable currents, along with many hidden reefs, making it a perilous area for vessels. Some of these distressed vessels were salvaged, while others sank to the sea floor, becoming a rich part of the underwater cultural assets.
As Taiwan pushes forward in its quest for renewable energy, the government is actively developing offshore wind power. Penghu presents optimal conditions for wind power development, luring companies to invest in harnessing the gusts that blow over the strait. As turbines prepare to nestle amidst the waves, a pressing issue emerges from the depths - the delicate equilibrium between energizing the future and preserving the past.
Tumblr media
Swept by the Southwest and Northeast monsoons, Penghu harbors a high potential for wind energy generation. According to Central Weather Bureau’s data, the annual average wind speed is 6.3 meters per second, with the average wind speed in November and December reaching up to 8.4 meters per second. Currently, the Geological Survey and Mining Management Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs is conducting surveys in the waters of Penghu. Wind turbine manufacturers have taken interest in the northern waters off Jibei Island in Penghu, designating four offshore wind farm sites, including the “Huanpeng No.1 to No.3 Offshore Wind Power Projects” led by Taiya Renewable Energy, and the “Guofeng Offshore Wind Power Project” announced by the Spanish energy company Iberdrola.
Additionally, the “Hailong No.2 and No.3 Projects” along with the “Xufeng Project” in the Changhua waters are under construction, and they overlap with Penghu shipwrecks. Among them, the “Hailong No.2 and No.3 Projects” have passed the review process and secured financing, aiming for completion and commercial operation before 2026.
Tumblr media
The “Underwater Cultural Heritage Preservation Act” stipulates that before undertaking any aquatic development, developers must conduct an investigation of underwater cultural assets. If suspected underwater cultural assets are discovered, development activities must cease immediately, and the Ministry of Culture must be notified. Zang Zhenhua, an academician at the Institute of History and Philology of the Academia Sinica, pointed out that wind turbine manufacturers indeed adhere to the regulations set by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, steering clear of regions potentially rich in underwater cultural assets. However, the current progress in the detection and identification of underwater cultural assets in Taiwan is quite slow, casting a shadow of uncertainty of whether there are yet undiscovered valuable assets in the potential development areas.
Tumblr media
The wind turbines to be used in “Huanpeng No.1 Offshore Wind Power Project” are expected to have a height of 260 meters and will be installed on the seabed at depths of 20 to 40 meters, with a “jacket structure” used for the underwater foundation, anchored to the seabed with three or four pin piles. Presently listed as cultural heritages, shipwrecks and scattered artifacts lie on the seabed 3 to 10 meters deep and seem unlikely to be directly affected by the wind turbines. However, Zang points out that a large number of target objects are not yet listed for protection. Moreover, there might be more undiscovered cultural assets buried deeper under the sea floor, all of which could be damaged during the construction of the wind turbines.
Tumblr media
As of the end of December in 2019, the underwater archaeology team from the Academia Sinica discovered a total of 90 suspected shipwreck sites in the waters around Taiwan, with 20 of them confirmed as shipwrecks or other target objects. Zang stated that currently, eight sites have been completed for the underwater cultural assets registry, of which six are in Penghu (with one location not disclosed). The known five shipwrecks include: (1) a Qing Dynasty wooden boat from the mid to late Qing period, sunken in the southwest waters of Kongque Island; (2) the “Jiangjyun No.1,” which sank near Wang’an Tanmen Harbor during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty; (3) the S.S. Bokhara merchant ship that ran aground north of Gupo Island in 1892; (4) the Warship Guang Bing that sank in the southeast waters of Jiangjun Island in 1895; and (5) the Yamafuji Maru, which was sunk by torpedoes from an American submarine at the Six Feet Reef on the west side of Penghu in 1942.
Zang believes that ancient navigational routes could serve as pointers for locations of shipwrecks. However, vessels might have deviated from their courses due to typhoons, encounters with reefs, and other factors. To pinpoint more precise locations of shipwrecks, it’s crucial to gather information from local chronicles, news reports, oral histories from local fishermen, and other documents, Zang added.
Zang also highlighted that at present, the predominant methods used to identify underwater cultural assets are acoustic and magnetic signal detections, just like the Chinese idiom “finding a needle in the sea.” He said that the most direct and effective method is having detection personnel dive into the sea for visual identification, yet the shortage of personnel poses a challenge, hindering the pace of exploration and resulting in slow progress.
The challenges encountered in exploring underwater cultural assets may not be resolved in the short term, while the development of wind power is advancing rapidly. Zang hopes that through education and advocacy, the public will recognize the value of underwater cultural assets, emphasizing that “once the assets are damaged, the loss is permanent.”
As Penghu embarks on the journey of wind power development, finding a balance between the pursuit of sustainability and the preservation of history will be the compass guiding it towards smooth sailing.
