It’s RWC eve, and with kickoff tomorrow at 8:15 PM UK time, some speculation is in order for the 9 people on tumblr who follow it.
For those who don’t know, rugby union is a sport not far removed from American football, based more on evasion than contact however. There are 15 players on each team, and the ultimate goal is to get the ball grounded in the other team’s try area - comparable to the end zone in NFL. Unlike NFL though, the ball can only be passed backwards in rugby (unless you’re kicking it), turning it into a whole different ball game, so to speak.
Should a team achieve this, they score 5 points, and can attempt a conversion - that’s kicking the ball from a tee between the upright posts - for an extra 2. Penalties can also be kicked for 3 points outside of try scoring situations, making for a strategic and slightly complicated scoring system, though yet again NFL fans won’t be unfamiliar with it. It’s worth noting that games have been won solely on penalty points though, so don’t underestimate them.
Now, for the teams:

As it’s still a developing sport, not even competing with the likes of soccer or cricket, there are only 20 participating teams in the RWC. There are several countries that have adopted it as their national sport however, including Wales, New Zealand, and many of the pacific islands.
Of the four pools, only two from each will advance to the quarter finals, while third placed in the pool will automatically qualify for the next tournament, giving teams plenty to play for, even if they aren’t going to win every game.
With that said, there are favourites and no hopers among those that have qualified;
The Favourites
🇫🇷 - France. As this year’s hosts, France are currently ranked 3rd in the world, and are notoriously unpredictable. Able to beat - or lose to - just about anyone, France have been the bridesmaids of the Rugby World Cup three times now. With flair, team depth and a home field advantage, they’re expected to go far, and should be guaranteed a place in the semifinals or better.
Which French team shows up may be revealed when they play New Zealand in the opening match.
🇮🇪 - Ireland. Ranked number one in the world, but with a poor record at World Cups, never getting past the quarterfinals, Ireland don’t thrive under the pressure of expectation, preferring to act as the underdog and surprise people instead.
Nevertheless, with a dedicated following, solid recent form, and trailblazing coach Andy Farrell, this could be the year they break that curse, though they’ll have to escape the Pool of Death first.
🇳🇿 - New Zealand. Historically the best rugby nation on the planet, New Zealand were near unmatched in this sport until recently, remaining at the top of the rankings for almost ten consecutive years. Their form has taken a dip recently, particularly after a record breaking loss to South Africa, but only time will tell whether the infamous All Blacks can bounce back, or if they were just hustling.
🇿🇦 - South Africa. As the current champs, alongside terrific form and team depth, the Springboks are expected to go far this year. While they are also stuck in the Pool of Death with Ireland and Scotland, they have a tremendous pedigree in the sport, matching New Zealand’s record three victories, despite featuring in two less World Cups. Thriving under pressure, the Springboks combine esteem and unconventional playstyles - you’ll hear the phrase ‘bomb squad’ used a lot when they’re playing - a lot of fans will see this World Cup as South Africa’s to lose.
The Dark Horses
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 - Scotland. Currently ranked 5th in the world, Scotland are in strong form and have surprising team depth for such a small rugby nation. Unpredictable and world beating on a good day (yet still waiting on that historic victory against the All Blacks), Scotland would be expected to do well this year… if they weren’t in the Group of Death alongside Ireland and South Africa. These are both teams Scotland can beat, but will they remain consistent for a full eighty minutes of play? That’s the main concern.
🇦🇷 - Argentina. Often forgotten as a rugby nation due to their soccer pedigree, Argentina are one of this tournament’s secret weapons. With solid form, growing momentum and a lucky placement in the pools however, los Pumas can probably reach the semifinals.
🇦🇺 - Australia. Famous rivals to the All Blacks, Australia’s form has fallen in recent years, but not to the point where they should be counted out. Almost causing a massive upset against New Zealand, leading them for most of the game on their own turf, when the Wallabies get it right they can be deadly, and they’ve won this tournament twice as well, so don’t write them off just yet.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - England. Having won the RWC in 2003, not to mention inventing the sport, England have a rugby pedigree that can’t be denied. Their recent form has been poor however, recording several record losses, as well as a first ever loss to Fiji. While they should make it out of their pool - though this is largely because it’s the easiest pool by far - England won’t be expected to go much further, maybe scraping past the quarterfinals if they’re lucky.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 - Wales. Between funding issues and player retirement, Wales are a depleted side this World Cup. While inconsistent across previous tournaments, they have notched up some remarkable results in the past, and could do so again under legendary coach Warren Gatland. It’s far more likely that they’ll struggle however, and may not even make it out of the pool this year, with Fiji and Georgia looking strong.
The No Hopers
🇮🇹 - Italy. While their form has been good, and they’ve made great strides in recent years, Italy are grouped in with France and New Zealand, the latter of which they’ve never beaten. Short of a miracle, Italy won’t be making it out of their pool.
🇫🇯 - Fiji. Recording a famous win in Twickenham on their last warmup match, Fiji have form and momentum on their side, and will be aiming for the quarterfinals. They likely won’t get any further, but for a tiny island nation, Fiji punch well above their weight.
🇼🇸 - Samoa. Having upset traditionally stronger nations at previous World Cups, Samoa could surprise a few opponents this year too. Beating either England or Argentina for a qualifying place will be a tough ask, but never say never.
🇹🇴 - Tonga. Also in the Group of Death with Scotland, Ireland and South Africa, Tonga will be gunning for an upset. Their form has been strong, and they perform immensely well for an island of 100,000 people, but escaping the pool will probably be too much of an ask.
🇬🇪 - Georgia. Europe’s ‘other’ rugby nation dominates in the second tier of competitive play, and will hope to upset Wales in this World Cup, just like they did in Cardiff last year. With Fiji also vying for the same spot though, their rough and tumble playstyle may work against them in the long run, as fitness is definitely an issue for bulkier players.
🇯🇵 - Japan. After stunning South Africa 34-32 at RWC2015, and graduating from their pool by beating both Ireland and Scotland at RWC2019, Japan will hope to take advantage of their reputation as the wild card, and escape pools a second time. With England looking vulnerable it’s not impossible, but poor form and and equally hungry Samoa may hold them back.
‘We’re just happy to be here!’
🇺🇾 - Uruguay. South America’s second best rugby nation has grown massively in recent years. Ousting Canada from the qualification rounds, they’ve featured at plenty of World Cups, and even got a surprise win over Fiji last tournament. In a strong pool with France, New Zealand and Italy however, they’ll be fighting with Namibia for what will likely be their sole victory of the tournament.
🇳🇦 - Namibia. Similarly to Uruguay in many ways, Namibia are also the second best in their continent, behind the mighty Springboks. Also in the same group as Uruguay, they’ll be aiming for a single win, with no real hope of graduating from their pool.
🇷🇴 - Romania. A World Cup mainstay, The Oaks have been to all but one tournament, and even that absence was mired in controversy. Between lacklustre recent form and rampant funding issues however, Romania will be lucky to get a win in what’s by far the toughest pool.
🇵🇹 - Portugal. Another nation known more for their soccer, Portugal won’t be expecting much from their pool. If they get a win, they’ll be ecstatic. They qualified by the skin of their teeth, but they made it here. That’s reason enough to celebrate, and it’s only a short plane trip home.
🇨🇱 - Chile. Debuting at RWC2023, Chile qualified with a last gasp victory over the USA, and will likely end up bottom of their pool. Still, qualifying at all is a massive achievement for a nation with such a small following.
…and that’s everything. RWC2023 is considered the most open World Cup in the sport’s history, with as many as six or seven viable contenders. Whoever holds the Webb Ellis Cup aloft in a few weeks is up to debate, but it should be entertaining nonetheless. Game on!

hi! do you know if the brazil nt is going to play any competitions this year? :) i’m quite a new football fan so i’m not v familiar w the list of competitions
i don’t think so for the senior men’s team, there are south american under 20s championship going on right now and it’s great!! you get to see the young talent that might end up playing for the senior team for other international championships ! if you’re looking for the same players like the world cup playing together then your best bet is next year, we’ll have copa america and the olympics to look forward to 🫶🏽

Can Brazil Turn Back the Clock?
Latin America’s Nostalgia Trap and the Return of Lula

“God is Brazilian,” a local expression goes, and during the first decade of this century, there were reasons to believe it might actually be true. In 2001, Goldman Sachs labeled Brazil—along with China, India, and Russia—as the BRICs, the emerging markets that would supposedly fuel global growth for many years to come. In the case of the South American giant, the prognosis appeared accurate, at least for a while. By the end of the decade, the Brazilian stock market’s value had quintupled. Wealth didn’t accrue exclusively to the upper class: Brazil’s middle class expanded by some 30 million people, and the country’s notorious gap between rich and poor narrowed, if just a bit. Airplanes were full of first-time flyers, and microwaves and TVs flew off the shelves. Even as the economy boomed, the rate of deforestation in the Amazon jungle fell sharply as the government invested in stronger enforcement against illegal farming and mining. Preparations to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics seemed to guarantee a long building boom and an even more prominent role for Brazil on the world stage.
Today, the man who oversaw most of that euphoric era as president from 2003 to 2010, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is leading the polls for presidential elections scheduled in October 2022. Although no one expects a divine miracle, many Brazilians hope the longtime metalworkers’ union leader—now 76, his trademark beard gone fully gray—can recapture at least some of the magic. After more than a decade of economic turmoil and political instability, Brazil is now about 20 percent poorer on a per-person basis than it was during Lula’s final year in office. Under the leadership of the country’s right-wing president, Jair Bolsonaro, who is running for reelection, Brazil has lost more than 660,000 people to COVID-19, second only to the United States in the Western Hemisphere. Its four-decade-old democracy is under severe stress. And, in a reversal of the Lula-era progress in protecting the Amazon, deforestation has increased dramatically, leading some scientists to warn that the forest, often referred to as “the world’s lungs,” is on the verge of collapse.
With a life story that reads like an epic novel and a charisma that led U.S. President Barack Obama to call him “the most popular politician on earth,” Lula may well have the talent and experience to put Brazil back on the right path. But it is also possible that Brazilians are falling into a classic recurring trap of Latin American politics: hoping that an aging leader who presided over a long-ago commodities export boom can somehow turn back the clock. Repeatedly over the past century, leaders who presided over periods of unusual prosperity, such as Juan Perón in Argentina in the late 1940s, Carlos Andrés Pérez during Venezuela’s oil boom of the 1970s, and Colombia’s Álvaro Uribe during the first decade of this century, have either returned to power themselves or helped protégés get elected. But almost without exception, these comebacks have ended in disappointment or disaster, in part because the world had changed and prices for crucial exports such as crude oil, iron ore, and soybeans had fallen.
Today’s Latin America is struggling to emerge from an especially troubled period that saw some of the world’s highest death rates from COVID-19, its worst rates of homicide and inequality, and a lost decade of lackluster economic growth and social unrest. Given the scale of these challenges, it is fair to worry that Lula’s rise may be symbolic of what the Venezuelan intellectual Moisés Naím calls “ideological necrophilia,” a historical preference during times of crisis for nostalgia and shopworn ideas instead of fresh leadership and forward-looking policy. As the 2022 presidential campaign in Brazil has progressed, Lula’s team has been characterized by a glaring shortage of new faces, relying instead on the principal players from his previous term to advise him. He told one interviewer: “You have to understand that, instead of asking what I’m going to do, you just have to look at what I did.” But for Lula to come even close to replicating his past record, he will have to overcome a much more adverse external context—and the outsize expectations that have ultimately sunk most others who attempted similar comebacks.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. With Argentina on the brink, up stepped the best player in the world to drive one in and give the South Americans a chance to stay in the competition.
It’s been a strange old gambling day. Australia beat Tunisia in the morning fixture thanks to a lovely header from one of their players whose name I can’t remember. It gave Alex an early win thanks to his hedge betting but no luck for Tom and Neil.
Onto game two and Robert Lewandowski finally scored at a World Cup - but his earlier assist alone would have done for Tom who saw a nice return. Neil also earned cash thanks to that 2-0 win while Alex was let down by a missed Saudi penalty.
Defending champions France were up next and all three of us took a win. Alex met the goals threshold and Neil and Tom correctly assumed the French would prevail.
Neil’s streak continued with the Argentina game, presuming to their wouldn’t be enough goals. The second Argentina goal saw Tom diving onto the app to cash out for £1.10, one corner short of a return. No penalties for Alex though to end his day on a damp squib.

Neil’s insurance beta means (we think) that if one thing doesn’t come off, the bet is voided and stake returned. Two things don’t happen and it’s a loss.

Liverpool's attack on the Premier League title was hit by the news that Emiliano Insua would not lose the next five matches.
 The promising defender was  play bazaar   called by the Argentine team to the South American Under-20 Championship, and the three-week tournament will take place later this month in Venezuela.
 Insua has competed in the last four Reds games and impressed Premier League leaders without defeating the series. He seems to have followed Raf's plans for the foreseeable future. The left defender will now skip Liverpool's match against Stoke next Saturday, as well as a double match from city rival Everton, a trip to Wigan and a table that will clash with Anfield in Chelsea.
 The call comes as a sign of rising stocks at the club's and country's ultimate defender this season. Insua, which celebrated its 20th anniversary on January 7, hosted the Liverpool Togel competition of Brazilian Fabio Aurelio and Italian Andrey Dossena.
 He is also expected to replace Gabriel Heinze in Argentina during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
 However, the loss of this match in Liverpool matches could return him in full parade to promising Premier League titles. The South American Under-20 Championships are closely watched by scouts from Europe's largest clubs, as they are considered a moped for cheap talent.
 This year's tournament runs from January 19 to the end of February 8.
 The Merseysiders will also be represented at the tournament by reserve team defender Ronald Huth from Paraguay.
 I'm sad to see a former international running straight to a long job with no experience. He took his friends with him, shredded, got rich, and then went through it again and did the same. Meanwhile, all the poor Franky and Freddie of Leyton Orients and Carlisles have no chance in this world and are undoubtedly better coaches.
 Before joining the management, coaches must have three years of experience in learning the football league before they can advance.
 Coming straight from acting is not, I think, the right thing to do. Ideally, they should send a detachment to the Asian team for six months to see how they responded when the president sent small pieces of paper with a form. why didn't you put this player on and off and so on.
 That will keep you alert! To work in Asia, you must have steel nerves. It's not about beautiful beaches, Tom Yam soup and cold Bintang beer! "

Jesus' interactions with women are an important element in the theological debate about Christianity and women. Women are prominent in the story of Jesus. He was born of a woman, had numerous interactions with women, and was seen first by women after his resurrection. He commissioned the women to go and tell his disciples that he has risen, which is the essential message of Christianity.
The gospels of the New Testament, written toward the last quarter of the first century AD, often mention Jesus speaking to women publicly and openly against the social norms of the time.

What does traditional, conservative Judeo-Christian guidance say about Women's Rights?
Compared to men, relatively few women are mentioned in the Bible by name and role. Those mentioned include the Matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah; Miriam the prophetess; Deborah the Judge; Huldah the prophetess; Abigail, who married David; Rahab; and the Persian Jewish queen Esther. Women play a pivotal role in subverting man-made power structures. The result is often a more just outcome than what would have occurred under ordinary circumstances.
Today, many of them are considered foundational by feminists because of the insights they provide into Jewish women's lives during those times. However, they are notable examples of women who broke the male dominance of historical documentation of the time.
Maimonides ruled that a woman who found her husband "repugnant" could ask a court to compel a divorce by flogging the recalcitrant husband "because she is not like a captive, to be subjected to intercourse with one who is hateful to her".
The rabbis also instituted and tightened prohibitions on domestic violence. Rabbi Peretz ben Elijah ruled, "The cry of the daughters of our people has been heard concerning the sons of Israel who raise their hands to strike their wives. Yet who has given a husband the authority to beat his wife?"
Rabbi Meir of Rothenberg ruled that, "For it is the way of the Gentiles to behave thus, but Heaven forbid that any Jew should do so. And one who beats his wife is to be excommunicated and banned and beaten."
Rabbi Meir of Rothenberg also ruled that a battered wife could petition a rabbinical court to compel a husband to grant a divorce, with a monetary fine owed to her on top of the regular ketubah money. These rulings occurred in the midst of societies where wife-beating was legally sanctioned and routine.
Maimonides tended to elevate the status of women above that which was common for the Middle Ages. For example, Maimonides permitted women to study Torah despite the fact that other contemporary and preceding legal opinions of his time did not. Rabbi Chaim Joseph David Azulai wrote that women should study the Mishnah only if they want to. According to the Hida, the prohibition of teaching women does not apply to a motivated woman or girl. "I'm leaving in peace," says Luis Scola, who is retiring with a strong legacy

During Argentina's quarterfinal Olympic basketball game against Australia in Tokyo, the play was stopped with under a minute remaining for a substitution. But this wasn't just a random shift on the Argentine side. Luis Scola, a basketball legend around the world, said this was his final game for his country. Scola received a standing ovation from both teams, who recognized the moment's historical significance.
The 6-foot-9, 41-year-old striker was the lone survivor from Argentina's "Golden Generation." Scola competed for Argentina in the 2004 Olympics, where his team won gold after defeating Italy and the United States.
Although Scola's final Olympic appearance came after Argentina was eliminated, that doesn't diminish his impact on the sport, his country, and the rest of South America.
"In peace, I am departing. This last year, I avoided facing my problems by running away, but they all seemed to materialize at once. I did my best to keep my cool under pressure. Seeing the other team, the media, and even the refs celebrating made me realize how extraordinary of a moment we are all sharing. When I'm not waiting to finish a game, it's hard to avoid these scenarios. I'm at a loss for words; it's over and done. I feel emotionally battered and taken aback. To the people of Australia, I extend my deepest gratitude; your recognition is deeply appreciated. One of the highest compliments you can receive is the respect of your enemies. I'm going on a high note, and I can finally relax, "Scola said after the game that he scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds.
Scola began his FIBA career with the Argentina junior national teams, where he won championships in 1996 and 2000 at the South American Junior and FIBA Americas Under-20 levels, respectively. In the 2001 FIBA Under-21 World Cup, he was a member of the bronze-medal winning team.
The gifted giant's list of achievements continued from there. He then moved up to the senior national team and was able to use his skills at multiple Olympic Games, FIBA World Cups, and FIBA AmeriCups.
Personal accomplishments include Scola's 2015 title as the FIBA AmeriCup's all-time leading scorer and his 2010 title as Argentina's all-time World Cup scoring leader. Now 39 years old, Scola was an integral part of the World Cup team that made it to the final and helped his country win gold in the 2019 Pan American Games.
Scola spent 10 years as an NBA player, including 2008, when he was named to the NBA's All-Rookie Team. He was an effective bench player who could play the post like a veteran but also jump out and score when necessary.
Scola's greatest legacy will be the increased popularity of basketball in his home nation. Scola represented Argentina in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio after 20 years of service at the international level. His endurance, consistency, and enthusiasm made him one of the most beloved and influential players on the international stage.
His final tournament was a celebration of his career and of Argentina's sustained success as one of the most feared teams on the FIBA basketball scene, despite Argentina not winning a medal. It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of players like Luis Scola who have brought Argentina to the forefront of international basketball.
