not to creep but in the pic you posted of your living room, what's the tiny residence on top of your bookshelf? the little like, castle? tudor house? gothic manor? lol
Oh yes! It's actually a nice story. It's a little wooden model of the mansion at Sonnenberg Gardens in Canadaguia, NY, a place that has always been a favorite of mine for day trips and other things. It's a very haunting and magical place and incredibly well preserved, but has very few visitors, so I always like going there when I can because it feels incredibly immersive. Isa and I spent a lovely day there together in the summer of 2019.
The model I found on a trip to Corning this winter! It was sitting in a thrift shop and I knew I had to have it. Here's the model:

And here's how the mansion looked in 2019 in the summer!

Set in the popular Finger Lakes region along the namesake lake in Onondaga County, Skaneateles is the perpetual first choice among New Yorkers looking for a lake getaway. There, one can also learn about the history of speed skating and see displays of sled evolution. Moreover, it is the setting of the 1980 United States' victory in a hockey game against the Soviet Union that went down in history as the "Miracle on Ice." The Lake Placid Olympic Museum covers the hotspot where the American team took that fateful shot to win the gold medal, with exhibits and artifacts celebrating the forever glory of the country. It is also a real paradise for the water fans seeking a tranquil retreat, with activities including swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and scenic relaxation on the banks.Īlong with two European towns in Switzerland and Austria, Lake Placid is one of the few locales around the world that hosted the Winter Olympics more than once. Set peacefully in the Adirondack Mountains, the town is bounded by several lakes, along with wildflower fields that bloom seasonally with creamy-white bloodroot, light-pink lady slipper, and crimson columbine. The former getaway for the rich from the hustle of New York, the area was also frequented by Humphrey Bogart from Casablanca, who grew up spending summers in a cottage on the lake's shore.įounded in the 19th century, Lake Placid is a consistently popular skiing, hiking, and biking destination for the city dwellers to immerse into a small-town atmosphere with bountiful natural pursuits. Comprising a 50-acre estate of the historic Sonnenberg Gardens or the "Sunny hill" in German, there is a 40-room mansion built in Queen Anne-style and acres of nine distinct formal gardens that bloom from April through October. The Mansion State Historic Park comes veiled in a royal vibe for fresh-air strolls that transport one back to the Victorian era atmosphere. Translating as "the chosen spot" from the native language of the original inhabitants, the charming townscape offers an equally chill and active getaway within natural scenery. Less than an hour south of Rochester, the quaint upstate New York town with a mystic name is perched scenically on the northern tip of the namesake Finger Lake. The Sonnenberg Mansion in the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park. Built between 1885 and 1887, the 40-room Queen Anne style mansion was designed by Francis Allen, a noted Boston architect. It is located in Canandaigua, New York, at the north end of Canandaigua Lake, in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. #mansion #Sonnenberg #NewYorkState #Canandaigua #FingerLakes #historic #architecture #photography

Sonnenberg Gardens are beautiful, but they are a shadow of their former glory. I’m glad I visited, but I can’t say that I connected with this place. The house definitely turned me off, there was just a sense of stifling energy in the place. Someone was playing the piano while we were there and the instrument was completely out of tune–which probably contributed to the sense of doom. I’m spiritually sensitive and I can tell you I felt some bad vibes in there. The gardens are slowly being restored. There is a Japanese Garden, a formal Italian style garden, a moonlight garden, a Roman bath, hedges, fountains, and even a collapsed temple to Diana. My favorite part of the garden was the Rock Garden where I found a glorious statue of a satyr. I love gardens so its odd that I didn’t love this one. It wasn’t so much the state of disrepair because there are some ruined gardens which are pure magic, but this place felt haphazard; like a bunch of wealthy people who threw money at different gardeners to expand the gardens because they could. To me, the different parts didn’t jive together. Not sure how to explain it but the chi was all wrong. Still, I must say that volunteers are slowly bringing back the various parts and working very hard. The gardens also photograph way better than they actually look in person, which is strange. Glad we stopped by and saw them, but not sure I’d be eager to return.
