Another feature that could spark more discussions: Instagram’s network isn’t starting from scratch. It will build on the company’s own network yes. But over time, Threads will also let you follow discussions on Mastodon and potentially other services that adopt ActivityPub. Tumblr and WordPress, which share a parent company, have both said they will support publishing on the protocol. In a year or two, then, you might read WordPress blog posts in Threads — or read Threads posts in your favorite Mastodon client. It’s an almost unthinkable reversal from Meta’s extremely lucrative walled-garden strategy, which it has employed for its entire history as a company. But Mosseri told me that decentralization is the future of social networks — even if it means that someday a disgruntled Threads user will be able to take the following they build in the app to another network, never to return. “There definitely are trade offs,” Mosseri said. “You're giving up some control. But there are benefits. I do think over time, it's going to be a more compelling value proposition that other apps are going to offer. And I think that should attract more creative talent over the long run.”
— Casey Newton, in a Platformer piece discussing Instagram’s new Twitter clone, quoting their chief Adam Mosseri

For the prompt 'Social Network' - @allvalley100
“I got all the apps now”, boasted Johnny, flashing his phone’s cracked screen.  “Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Grindr, TikTok.  Not sure what that last one is though, think it’s a talking clock.”
Daniel blinked.  “Did you say Grindr?”
“Yeah, it’s this network for men to compare power tools.  I’ve already got a bunch of guys who seem really keen to see my equipment.”
Daniel spat out his martini.  “Grindr’s not-”
“Not what?”
“Not-” Daniel cut himself off, feeling devilish.  “Nothing, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.”
“Hope so”, Johnny responded.  “And if they’re hot I might suck their dicks, too.”

Men, Podcasts, and the Irony of Modern Connections
Tumblr media
In the modern era, we've seen a paradox of human behavior, particularly among men: the preference for podcasts over personal connections. Picture this: a man, earbuds snugly fit, nodding along to the wisdom of podcast hosts, chuckling at their jokes, and becoming engrossed in the world of their conversations. All the while, he sits alone on public transit, walks alone in a park, or even shares a table with another solitary individual at a cafe. The irony? He may be "connecting" more with distant voices than with the real, tangible humans around him.
The phenomenon is amusing for several reasons:
The Illusion of Company: Listening to podcasts, particularly conversational ones, can give the illusion of being amidst friends. It's funny to think that while our ancestors sat around campfires sharing stories, modern man finds comfort in a pre-recorded chat, often with people he's never met and probably never will.
One-Sided Friendships: Regular listeners might refer to their favorite hosts by their first names, laugh at inside jokes, or even feel a sense of camaraderie. However, this "friendship" is mostly one-sided. It's humorously tragic to imagine a scenario where someone says, "I spent the day with Joe Rogan and Tim Ferriss," when in reality, they just listened to podcasts while cleaning their apartment.
Convenience Over Connection: There's a whimsical element in considering that in an age where it has never been easier to communicate, some opt for the more straightforward approach – pressing play. Making friends can be hard, and podcasts provide a buffer against the challenge of starting conversations or the potential awkwardness of social interactions.
"Socializing" in Silence: It's amusing to imagine two men, both engrossed in their podcasts, sitting next to each other. While they might be gaining vast knowledge or laughing at hilarious anecdotes, they remain silent and disconnected from each other, their social energy channeled into voices from a device.
A Modern Phenomenon: Our grandfathers had newspapers, our fathers had television, and now the modern man has podcasts. It's a humorous evolution of how men have found ways to be "social" without actually being social.
Of course, this observation isn't intended to be a sweeping generalization. Many men form deep and meaningful relationships, and podcasts can serve as a supplement to, not a replacement for, genuine human connection. However, there's no denying the comedic gold in visualizing modern man's dance with digital voices, often sidelining real-world connections. In the end, perhaps it's a gentle reminder for all of us to occasionally take out our earbuds and engage with the world – and the people – around us.

In futuro, parlando di noi, diranno:
"Fotografavano il cibo invece di mangiarlo mentre era ancora caldo, e si scambiavano foto di cazzi e tette invece di incontrarsi per scopare".
