My humble thoughts on The Marvels
Tumblr media
The Marvels is a fun, brisk (perhaps too brisk), light-hearted buddy super-herione adventure. However, the things that Marvel has been struggling with lately are unfortunately still in the play with this sequel. The plot is pretty thin and the villain is another of Marvel's typical shallow, one dimensional type baddies. While we can certainly understand and even sympathize with Dar-Benn's motivations and why she's doing the things she's doing in this film there just isn't enough meat on the script bones for actress, Zawe Ashton to work with although she well with what she's given. The same goes for the plot. The acts that the villain is perpetrating on the planets and its people in this film definitely qualify as high stakes material but the film's pace is so rapid that it ignores any opportunity to show some emotional stakes for the victims of the villain's atrocities.
So while the film downplays these aspects it chooses to focus more on the relationships between the three heroines. In that respect it does a decent job of bonding these three young women along the course of the film into a sisterly dynamic. Each have issues with each other positive and negative and by the end they've been able to work through their issues and understand each other better. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani have good chemistry together with Iman continuing to charm and delight as Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel. Sam Jackson is great as Fury as usual and has some of the funnier lines in the movie. And let's not forget Goose the cat/flerken who kinda stole the show in the first movie. She's back and is involved a lot more this time to equally humorous results.
I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the fights in this film. I thought they were hard hitting, well choreographed and fun to watch. The fight between Monica and Kree soldiers in the Kahn's house was a stand out sequence which I thought made clever use of her powers. The end fight between the trio and Dar-Benn was also equally exciting . The visual effects were very good and consistent throughout which is another area where Marvel has been struggling lately. With this film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Loki Season 2, the VFX quality appears to be back on track.
Honestly my biggest gripe would be with the marketing department for this film. The amount of trailers, tv spots and clips released for this film was ridiculous. I only watched the first two trailers and maybe a couple of the tv spots and I felt like I had seen most of movie already. I watched the rest of the clips afterwards and was shocked at how much more of this movie was spoiled in the clips I hadn't watched beforehand. Even the surprise cameo and part of the fricking post credit scene was shown in a couple of the spots! If you're someone who did watch every bit of footage that was released I can honestly say you saw most of the movie beforehand and that's unfortunate. Given the film's short runtime you can rest assured there was a lot of material cut from the final film. I've already noticed a few things that were in the marketing footage and test screening leaks that were missing from the final cut.
Overall, despite a simplistic story and a forgettable villain this movie is still a lot of fun. While it is mostly standalone in nature, it is also very much a sequel to not only Captain Marvel but WandaVision and Ms. Marvel as well. (Surprisingly there's zero reference to Secret Invasion despite the Skrulls having a role to play in this film but that's probably for the best given how poor that series turned out to be.) The post-credit scene however is a game changer and hints at some exciting possibilities to come. ⭐⭐⭐

In our continuing TV catch up we finished all the Marvel stuff!
We watched Secret Invasion first and I have to say I thought that was really good! I don't know why there was so much hate for it I thought it was a really cool spy thriller thing Samuel L. Jackson absolutely shines in his Nick Fury role and I loved how they introduced the Super Skrulls and the Super Skrulls fight at the end was really great.
After that we moved on to Loki Season 2 which I would have to say I absolutely loved it and I found it played up the comedy more then the fist season and it totally worked for this second season I really enjoyed it and it wrapped up everything perfectly
and then we moved on to Season 2 of What If..? I have always enjoyed the comic series and much like the comics some stories are of course hit or miss and that is no different when it comes to this series. I wouldn't say Season 2 is better then the first one I would say they are about equal some episodes are really good and some are ok but I did enjoy Season 2 alot and I can say one thing I would absolutely watch an animated Captain Carter spin off of her and Black Widow going on adventures and missions and just being awesome! I would totally watch that.
and finally we came to Echo I'm not super familiar with the character being I don't read alot of Daredevil but I know of the character from her appearances outside the Daredevil books. Now honestly I thought this was a pretty good series although a bit short at only 5 episodes I thought it was pretty awesome tho and the story was good as well as the acting. If you are going to watch it you will be reading some subtitles due to the fact that the character of Echo is Deaf (if you didn't already know) and sign langue is used through out. Although the device that Kingpin introduces in the show and uses that translates sign langue into audio was really cool and I think stuff like that should exist in the real world. Speaking of Kingpin I said it before and I'll say it again Vincent D'Onofrio as The Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) is absolutely perfect as this character There hasn't been alot of live action versions of him but out of the 3 that here has been he in my opinion is the absolute best. He is the true Kingpin of Crime. Other then that the action was really good it is a bit gritty and brutal and this makes the show a bit more Adult in the ratings but it was great I enjoyed it

So we watched The Marvels (2023). Yeah, that film with Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel and Spectrum; apparently that came out in NOVEMBER, and has now hit streaming. Disney just left this out to die and did 0 advertising for it and it seems nobody watched it.
Overall I think it was a very fun film, with a few big weaknesses. If you like MCU stuff, it's absolutely worth a watch, then again I liked antman 3 and hated the loki tv series, so my opinion is apparently wrong.
More detailed thoughts (and spoilers) below
So there is a *bunch* of stuff that has happened off-screen at the start of this film, that (as far as I can remember) hasn't happened in another marvel film/tv show, we're just expected to magically know it has:
The Kree had (/are having) a civil war
Carol destroyed the supreme intelligence
The Skrulls have an emperor, and at least 1 planet.
Nick Fury lives in space now, and founded&runs S.A.B.E.R
All of that is just stuff you should know, somehow.
The villain is a kree accuser whose name I've already forgotten, she's a boring version of Ronan - and Ronan wasn't exactly exciting to begin with. But at least Lee Pace was chewing the scenery. It feels here like the actress is going for it 100%, but that's still 200% short of where the scenery chewing, cackling villain energy needs to be.
The rest of the cast do a good job, and Iman Vellani continues to be great as Kamala, and her family steal most scenes they're in.
The CG overall is good, and feels like it's actually needed.
The fight choreography is mostly really solid, and has some creative uses of powers.
There is a scene with the flerken(s) I won't spoil, but absolutely give a raise to whoever decided to play that song - it's a very, very funny scene.
Now nowhere in the film does it say Carol is queer. At no point is it stated clearly that she's into women. She just, you know, lived with and had a close relationship with Monica's mum for a number of years, and is "old friends" with Valkyrie. Oh yeah, that's another thing we're just expected to know, she's been...friends...with Valkyrie for years, apparently. Was this just an excuse to get Tessa Thompson to turn up in a suit? possibly. again, the film isn't saying anything, it's just thinking it really rather loudly.
And in a highlight of how few people saw this film: it has some x-men in it. Sure it's because a character gets shunted to a parallel universe, but they wake up to find a well designed, but badly CG'd Beast (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) and an alternate version of themselves looking after them. Which means somebody writing it has read a comic with sword in. Which also means we're one step closer to getting Abigail Brand in the MCU, and that's exciting.
Overall it's a fun film, that wants to have fun and it seems like the people involved in it are having fun. Why this was left to rot but secret invasion was pushed so hard, I'll never know.

Smart Pop Explains Marvel Movies and TV Shows - Book Review
Tumblr media
Who is Iron Man? What’s an Infinity Stone? When did Captain America become the first Avenger? Why does everyone love Loki even though he’s a bad guy? It’s easy for new fans to get overwhelmed by the sprawling mythology and complexity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which now spans more than 20 films and TV shows. Unlike encyclopedias and guides that offer diehard fans trivia, details, and deep dives into every on-screen moment, this first-of-its-kind explainer is an easy, fun, and accessible introduction to the hundreds of characters, plots, and interconnected stories that make up one of the greatest pop-culture franchises of all time. Do you want to enjoy Spider-Man, but don’t quite know what a Skrull is? Maybe you know that it was Agatha all along, but did WandaVision leave you wondering about the multiverse of madness? Do you need a primer on Thor’s backstory so you can grasp how The God of Thunder became friends with The Guardians of the Galaxy? Or, maybe you just want to be able to join in when everyone shouts out “Wakanda Forever!” If you’re looking for an easy to access entry into what literally everyone is talking about, this is the book for you! As the perfect and unauthorized resource to keep on hand when watching something for the first—or tenth—time, Smart Pop Explains Marvel Movies and TV Shows like no one else could.

My rating 4 of 5 stars
I have very little shame in admitting that at some point while watching Endgame, I laughed to myself because I realized that I could not name half of the characters on the screen. As much as I've grown to like the franchise there is a lot I'm not paying attention to for one reason or another.
Which is why this is the perfect book for me.
It helped fill in a lot of blanks for both characters I was familiar with and those who I know but not as well as I might have before.
My one complaint about it is that it felt all over the place, so it became difficult to keep up with all the information and probably would have been better divided into sections.

WandaVision Episode 9 ” The Series Finale” Review
Through the healing power of grief, Wanda Maximoff discovers new strength within herself.
Spoilers Below
In WandaVision Episode Nine, “The Series Finale,” directed by Matt Shakman, Wanda and Vision battle both Agatha Harkness and the Hayward led S.W.O.R.D. for their home. The miniseries ends with an emotionally poignant episode that is full of action and suspense. Has Wanda and Vision’s love come to an end?
The revelation of “Fake Pietro” real identity is supremely disappointing. Fake Pietro locks Monica up in his bachelor pad. In the first half of the episode, Fake Pietro seems like he is Peter Maximoff from the X Men Universe since the living room looka like his basement in Days of Future Past. But then Monica figures out Agatha is controlling Fake Pietro through his necklace. She pulls off the necklace revealing Fake Pietro to be local actor Ralph Bohner. I wish that the WandaVision writers had decided to write a more engaging storyline where Agatha had somehow kidnapped Peter from his world, opening the possibility for Multi-Universe storylines for the MCU. Instead, Evan Peters is wasted as a mere Easter Egg in this miniseries.
Wanda lets go of her illusions allowing for personal growth. The Westview Sitcom World has enabled Wanda to live in all the lost possibilities that Vision’s death destroyed. Scarlet Witch unconsciously chose sitcoms as the vehicle because it’s always been a comfort source for her, and it’s a space where nothing truly horrible ever happens. Anything sad or complicated is wrapped up in the episode it appeared in and is never heard about again. Wanda pushed all of her pain into the minds of all the Westview citizens that she controlled. They shared her nightmares and shared her emotional agony during the day. Agatha reveals this to Wanda when she lifts Scarlet Witch’s control over them. People lash out when they suppress their grief. Wanda needs to let go of all of her denial of death to help everybody she hurt.
When Wanda faces the truth, she is finally able to defeat Agatha. Agatha wants all of Wanda’s magic. She promises Wanda that if she lets her steal her powers, the ancient witch will fix the spell that created the Westview Sitcom World. Wanda, her family, and everybody in Westview can live a pain-free life.  Something that is impossible since life is never without its bumps. Agatha thinks she has won when Wanda can’t let her family go and save everybody by dropping all the Westview Sitcom World illusions. Instead, she starts blindly attacking the ancient witch, allowing her to absorb all her power. But like in Marvel Comics, Agatha “mentored” Wanda. In episode eight, Agatha instructed Wanda that only the witch casting specific runes in a room can use their magic. Scarlet Witch cast runes on all the spell barriers surrounding the Westview Sitcom World. Wanda makes Agatha think she won; instead, she is absorbing the villain’s magic. By embracing her Scarlet Witch persona, she becomes an actual superhero, even getting a new costume. Wanda is now ready to let go of her manifested dreams of what could of been.
Wanda slowly erases the Westview Sitcom World giving herself time to say goodbye to her family. The most beautiful moment is right before the erasure hits their home. Vision and Wanda discuss how they have said goodbye before, meaning they will likely say hello again. The existence of White Vision makes the continuation of their love story highly likely. S.W.O.R.D. programmed White Vision to destroy “conditional” Vision. The programmed synthezoid has no memories of his past, making him easy to control. During the primary fight, “conditional” Vision uses the thought experiment of the “Ship of Theseus” (that’s all about what makes something the original object) to convince White Vision that he is the real Vision. He takes out the memory block from the resurrected synthezoid. White Vision’s eyes change as he remembers everything, then he announces that ” I am Vision.” White Vision flies off. Maybe when the newly minted Vision and Wanda meet again, their love story can start anew.
The end credit scenes open up all sorts of possibilities for future MCU media. The first one starts right after Wanda flies away.  A female detective tells Monica that somebody wants to talk to her in the old Westview movie theatre. When they enter the movie theatre, the detective transforms back into a Skrull. Skrulls are aliens that can mimic the form of any living being. The female Skrull tells Monica that a friend of her mother wants to meet her in space. The scene is an Easter Egg from Captain Marvel where Carol introduces Monica’s mother Maria to Talos, a Skrull General looking for a safe home planet for his people.
During the second end credit sequence, Wanda is living in a secluded cabin in the European countryside. These new living arrangements remind me of when Bruce Banner lived alone in a cabin trying to get his Hulk persona under control. There is an illusion that Wanda is making tea, but in actuality, she is floating in the air while reading a book about magic. The witch’s penance is learning how to control “the Scarlet Witch” inside her before re-entering society. Wanda hears one of her twins calling for help. Is this just a memory? A symptom of Wanda’s grieving process. Or do Tommy and Billy still somehow exist? There is no scene showing the twins disappearing at the end of the episode.
” The Series Finale” explores the beauty and pain in grief. WandaVision is a perfect television show for this time when too many people have lost family and friends before their time.

There’s a moment that every child who aspires to movie stardom dreams about. They practise it in front of the mirror: graciously thanking their parents, their first drama teacher, their favourite hamster; smiling; waving; trying valiantly to cry. No, it’s not an Oscar’s acceptance speech – at least, not anymore; it’s the moment that super-producer Kevin Feige offers you his hand across a conference table and tells you you’ve landed a Marvel movie.
Yesterday came the first reports that Olivia Colman is in talks to slip into full-body lycra and join the MCU, via the studio’s next small-screen series Secret Invasion. The news follows a recent clutch of arrivals of actresses of a similar age and calibre to Colman to other Marvel projects, including Kathryn Hahn’s show-stealing turn in WandaVision, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ surprise appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Such casting choices may once have sounded insane. Why would the woman who just two years ago won an Academy Award for her grief-stricken, crumbling performance as Queen Anne in The Favourite, and who is up for another one this weekend for The Father, choose to submerge her pristine brand as the reigning monarch of British acting, both on-screen and off-, in a barrel of brightly-coloured, pop-sountracked, quippy-scripted comic bookery?
Secret Invasion sounds even more deranged than the average Marvel project: it will likely focus on the race of green, reptilian aliens called Skrulls (Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as Skrull commander Talos from Captain Marvel), as they invade earth by shapeshifting to imitate superheroes. Colman as an alien reptile? It’s hard to think of a more unlikely piece of casting since Judi Dench dressed up in a catsuit.
But over the last decade, a foundational piece of Marvel’s strategy has been signing-on not just fresh-faced stars like Chris Evans and Tom Holland, but some of the world’s most serious performers: inde darlings (Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Brie Larson), BBC-drama-grown Brits (Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch) and awards-laden  powerhouses (Annette Bening, Scarlett Johansson, and even Anthony Hopkins, Colman’s co-star in The Father, who is also up for an Oscar) have all rocked up in the MCU. Much as the Harry Potter franchise once was, the films have become a who’s who of Oscar after-party invite lists.
Tumblr media
So why would the great and good of Hollywood acting willingly attach themselves to a franchise that one of the greatest directors of all time not so long ago declared to bear a greater resemblance to theme park rides than cinema? Marvel films are delightful but they are also frequently silly (inevitably, in the transition from cartoon comic book drawings to full-sized, three-dimensional adults leaping around on-camera dressed in skin-tight lycra suits and capes, some space for ridicule is opened up).
The studio is fully aware of this, which is why these films are comedies, but that does not make them any more obvious as vehicles for artists interested in rendering psychological depth on-screen. In 2012, Kiwi wunderkind director Taika Watiti told Interview magazine that he was suspicious of the way feature films can often “turn into commodities”. Yet five years later, his own Marvel movie, Thor: Ragnarok, hit cinemas.
The financial incentives to any actor are obvious and no doubt play a part but there is something even more valuable to someone like Benedict Cumberbatch – not exactly strapped-for-cash following Sherlock, The Imitation Game, and The Hobbit films – inextricably wound-up with those mega pay packages. That something is audience size. Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing film of all time until Avatar’s re-release in China in March last year, took $357 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend.
Tumblr media
In America, the average price of a cinema ticket that year was about $9  – that means, by the roughest of calculations, that within 48 hours of the film’s release, 12% of the population, or some 40 million people, had seen the film. An actress like Colman has not exactly been confined to niche audiences – The Crown is not a small show – but even so, the prospect of such unparalleled exposure must be seductive.
The dream of a Marvel movie has not replaced the dream of an Oscar – it all but guarantees it. A symbiotic relationship is emerging between the franchise and the Academy, as the popular reach of one feeds and is elevated by the prestige of the other. There is no better example of this than the tragically-curtailed career of the late Chadwick Boseman.
From a handful of critically-lauded but quietly received biopics (42, Get on Up), he was propelled overnight to global stardom by his MCU roles as Black Panther, Marvel’s first black superhero, culminating in the Black Panther film in 2018. Now, just months after his death from cancer, he is a shoo-in to win a Best Actor award this week for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The opposite of a Marvel film in almost every sense – it’s claustrophobic, literary (it’s based on an August Wilson play), and tragic – it was Black Panther nonetheless that secured him the part.
Tumblr media
This give-and-take between superhero flicks and prestige dramas extends beyond actors: Watiti, who has just wrapped shooting on another Thor film, was nominated for an Oscar in 2019 for his German Resistance drama Jojo Rabbit, while Chloé Zhao, who is sure to win Best Director this weekend for Nomadland, has just wrapped her own Marvel movie, Eternals, which is slated for release in November.
Kathryn Hahn, meanwhile, was brought into WandaVision by director Matt Shakman, better known for directing prestige shows like Mad Men and Succession. His vision, in collaboration with the writer Jac Schaeffer, led to a formally wildly innovative show, providing the opportunity for Hahn and the show’s pair of stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany – both outstanding actors – to flex their comic and creative muscles. Such starpower behind the camera is itself an attraction for actors of Colman’s calibre, and while there is as yet no word on who will direct Secret Invasion, there are many exciting possible names in the mix.
A few powerhouse industry figures were instrumental in fostering this mutually-beneficial relationship. The first was Robert Downey Jr, the original posterboy of the franchise. When he agreed to star in the first film, 2008’s Iron Man, it was a huge gamble – director Jon Favreau had to battle the studio to accept him – as he emerged from a wilderness decade marred by drug addiction, but it was also a huge coup. Downey Jr had just been nominated for an Oscar for Ben Stiller’s comedy Tropic Thunder and had recently starred in David Fincher’s instant cult-classic Zodiac; his personal reputation may have been in tatters, but as a serious actor, he brought chops.
His Iron Man would become the emotional and dramatic heart of the franchise over its next three phases. Kenneth Branagh, who directed the 2011 film Thor, also bridged the gap between the big flashy studio and his own thespy circle: he brought his protégé Tom Hiddleston, who at that point was best known for his British TV and theatre work, onboard to play Loki, a decision that Feige apparently described as the most important the studio would ever make. Hiddleston capitalised on rather than abandoned his roots: he approached the character like “a comic book version of Edmund in King Lear, but nastier.” It paid off: Hiddleston is a global superstar, frequently touted as the next James Bond, and his dedicated Loki spin-off show is the Marvel TV release of the summer.
Of course, there’s one thing that Marvel offers its actors that money simply can’t buy: a bit of fun. “If my actors aren’t having a good time on set, then I’m doing something wrong,” Waititi told Polygon in 2016. Reflecting on her playfully heightened performance in the early episodes of WandaVision in a recent interview with the New York Times, Hahn said that her husband said her performance had reminded him of her younger self in her college days. “I haven’t seen that part of you in so long – just you, hamboning it,” he told her. Colman, who is by all accounts is a mischievous on a film set, may simply want to bust out of those period costumes, slip into a bodysuit, and have a good time.

I really think they're setting up for Kang the Conqueror.
Kang is famous for manipulating time, and the usual motivation behind most of his actions is to rule the universe. (Which the TVA does in a way.)
Since there are no time lizards, he's one of the only major players that's strong enough to be believable that he's behind the TVA.
At one point in the comics, he goes back in time to bring his younger self (Iron Lad) to the present.
What does Iron Lad do? He forms the Young Avengers.
Some other notable members of this team are Wiccan and Speed. (Wanda's kids.) Kid Loki. (Who just made an appearance in the end credits scene of episode four.) Kate Bishop's Hawkeye. (Clint Barton was her mentor, and we're getting a Hawkeye show soon.) Hulkling. (He's part Skrull, who have been introduced, and he's also in a relationship with Wiccan, which could be the LGBTQIA+ representation they told us we're getting.) Miss America. (Who's been cast and is going to be in DSMoM.) And Stinger. (Cassie Lang.)
Kang the Conqueror has also already been cast. (Set to be portrayed by Johnathan Majors.)
TFaTWS set up White Wolf, U.S. Agent, and Madame Hydra. (Which could lead to Hydra's High Council, a perfect villain for Sam Wilson's Captain America to face in his movie.)
So I don't think it's that unbelievable that Loki could set up for the MCU's next big bad, especially with the phase four and five lineup, and that Loki was the last of the initial three tv shows to come out. (Even though at first glance, TFaTWS would seem to have the biggest impact on the MCU.)

i’ve been thinking about the future of the mcu and realized there’s a LOT that i didn’t know/didn’t remember in terms of where things are going so i figured i’d sum it up incase anyone else was in the same boat!!
quick recap of (unresolved) mid-credit scenes:
doctor strange: mordo (a sorcerer that is one of strange’s mentors, who by the end of the movie becomes disillusioned with magic/the ancient one and quits) confronts pangborn (the paraplegic who healed himself with the mystic arts, who tells strange about mystic arts in the first place) and steals his magic because according to mordo, there are “too many sorcerers." of note, this guy is typically a villain in the comics but hasn’t been thus far...
gotg2: ayesha (leader of the sovereign, a golden skinned alien race obsessed with genetic purity), after spending most of the movie chasing the guardians for stealing some stuff, is revealed to have created an artificial being named “adam” which is presumably, adam warlock. (other stuff that is less relevant: kraglin appears to take up yondu’s mantle; the ravagers regroup and several old and obscure comic book characters are introduced [charlie-27, aleta, martinex, mainframe]; the watchers are watching things.)
far from home: j jonah jameson basically tells the whole world spider-man’s secret identity, and frames him for what happened with mysterio....making him public enemy #1. ALSO, turns out nick fury and maria hill in the movie were ACTUALLY the two skrulls from captain marvel (talos and soren) attempting to do their job, while the real fury (and presumably hill) is ... up in space on some spaceship!!!
wandavision: monica (who we can assume is photon) is called by “an old friend of [her] mother’s,” up in space, which presumably means fury, talos, or carol. ALSO, wanda sits in the middle of nowhere reading the darkhold and hears the voices of her children who.. by all accounts, should not exist.
aaaaand what we know about future movies (i’m not even going into the tv series.....):
black widow:
takes place after civil war
nat confronts a “dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past,” likely has to do with taskmaster who has apparently taken over the red room where nat was trained as an assassin
prominent new characters: yelena belova, who will take over the mantle of black widow after this; alexei shostakov aka red guardian, an ollllld marvel hero analogous to captain america except for the soviet union.
tony stark will make an appearance... SOBS
shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings:
shang-chi has never been seen in the mcu before, but he is, essentially, a superhero that is a master martial artist, and in some adaptations can also create duplicate (fake) versions of himself to confuse opponents
main villain will be the the mandarin who we have *sort of* seen before... he is the leader of a terrorist organization called “ten rings” whose main goal is to destroy world peace. brief history -- in iron man 1: one ten rings cell kidnaps tony stark and tries to force him to make weapons (he of course, makes his suit instead). stark and ten rings become enemies and fight a bunch. nat and nick fury fight them too. in iron man 3, the villain aldrich killian hires a dude to pretend to be the mandarin and claim responsibility for a bunch of stuff, but its not the ten rings or the mandarin at all. this makes the mandarin v mad and he has a dude kidnap the faker to punish him. they also briefly show up in ant-man, when a ten rings agent tries to buy the yellowjacket suit that darren cross is selling. BUT IN SHANG-CHI....... looks like we are FINALLY going to see the real mandarin after over a decade!!
the villain razor fist will also show up, he is lesser known... he has no superhuman powers but he has surgically replaced his hands (1 or 2, depending on the version) with a steel blade, and is highly skilled at hand to hand combat.
besides the presence of these characters, the only bit of plot we know is “shang-chi is drawn into the ten rings organization and forced to confront his past.” so... yeah. we don’t know much at all.
eternals:
quick explanation: the eternals are an immortal alien race who have been secretly living on earth for thousands of years. they were created by the celestials, who are most prominently in gotg2.
more entirely new characters!!! their names are: thena, who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy; gilgamesh, who can make a super strong exoskeleton out of cosmic energy; ikaris, who has superhuman strength, flies, and can project cosmic energy out his eyes; kingo, who can shoot cosmic energy projectiles from his hands; makkari, who creates sonic booms, has super speed, and is deaf; phastos, who has enhanced intelligence, and is also gay (and married with a kid!); ajak, who has healing powers; sprite, who can project illusions; sersi, who can manipulate matter; druig, who can mind control; and dane whitman (black knight), a human with a mystical sword.
regarding the plot... it seems the eternals have kind of dispersed, but have to come together again to fight the deviants, who are their “evil counterparts” (also created by the celestials, though i’m unclear on why). thena and gilgamesh have apparently been in exile, unclear why; sersi, who is posing as a museum curator, has apparently been in love with ikaris for centuries and it seems as if their love story may be central to the film; and kingo is a bollywood film star in his spare time. aaaaand that’s pretty much all we know.
directed by chloé zhao of nomadland fame!
spider-man no way home:
based on the post-credits scene in far from home, peter parker will now be known as spider-man to everyone. unclear if he’s going to be seen as a bad guy due to mysterio framing him, but i guess we’ll see!
jamie foxx is electro, and alfred molina is doctor octopus; which is VERY interesting considering they played these roles in other spider-man franchises, once again stirring up excitement for possible multiverse.
there have been *multiple* reports that andrew garfield, kirsten dunst, tobey maguire, and emma stone will be in the movie but tom holland has repeatedly denied this... so... who knows.
there are also rumors that matt murdock / daredevil (from netflix) will be in several scenes! not confirmed though.
MJ is still his girlfriend and i hope it stays that way!!
doctor strange will be featured in the movie, taking on the mentor role now that tony stark is gone :( this will be interesting as i.. haven’t really seen them interact much before. because of this inclusion some people speculate that the film may draw inspo from some comic storylines where peter’s secret identity is restored with magic.
doctor strange in the multiverse of madness:
scarlet witch is essentially co-starring!!! it’s going to be really interesting to see if they bring vision or the twins into this at all, though i’m not counting on it.
seems like mordo will be the main villain -- recall the ds1 post credits scene where he is apparently running around trying to steal people’s magic.
america chavez will make her debut!!!!!! i have no idea how this plays into anything but i am so excited!!
regarding the plot, all we really know is that strange has been researching the time stone, mordo messes with him, and this results in him accidentally unleashing “unspeakable evil.” presumably there will also be heavy involvement of the multiverse, and who knows what kind of craziness that will bring!!
initially was going to be directed by scott derrickson who did ds1; however he stepped down to being just EP due to “creative differences.” i am presuming this is because derrickson really wanted to make this more gothic and horror than disney was comfortable with. i REALLY hope they keep some of those elements though and don’t erase the idea entirely! anyway, it will be directed by sam raimi now (of evil dead and spiderman 2002 fame).
the film also reportedly ties in with the loki series (will loki show up!?) and spiderman 3 (which is obvious enough, given that strange is in that movie and those curious electro and doctor octopus castings...)
thor: love and thunder
directed by taika waititi again, hell yeah!!! and he has stated, the film will be “so over the top now in the very best way" and would make ragnarok look like a "run of the mill, very safe film" .... so.... oh god
so many great returning players!!! including.... valkyrie (now the king of new asgard), jane foster, lady sif, korg, star-lord, mantis, drax, nebula, and kraglin (takes up yondu’s mantle after he dies in gotg2)
in this movie, thor isn’t thor anymore.... it’s JANE!!! she gets cancer :( and is undergoing treatment while simultaneously being thor. i’m a little nervous how this will be handled, but i’m excited. (it’s based off an amazing comic series by jason aaron)
the big bad: gorr the god butcher, played by christian bale! the gist of it is, this dude HATES gods because nobody helped when his family was dying and in need. his weapon is “all-black the necrosword,” forged from the head of a celestial, and allows the user to create wings and fly at extreme speeds. honestly, he sounds cool as fuck.
valkyrie is going to be made canonically bisexual!!!
it will explore more of korg’s backstory, and also include... space sharks!?!?! an alien race from the comics.
taika has called the script “very romantic” so take that as you will
black panther 2
will again be directed by ryan coogler
not much is known at this point, does not have an official name
t’challa will NOT be recast (which i’m happy about) so..... honestly no idea what to expect for this one. i think we can probably expect shuri to have an expanded role. all we know so far is they will be “exploring the world of wakanda.” not clear to me how this is different from the upcoming wakanda D+ series.
tenoch huerta has reportedly been cast as a villain, but no one has any idea who. there’s also rumors that donald glover is in “informal talks” to play a role. note all of this is unconfirmed.
captain marvel 2
will be directed by nia da costa (candyman!) and written by megan mcdonnell, who is one of wandavision’s best writers!
will take place in the present day
will feature kamala khan / ms. marvel, monica rambeau / photon!!! this will be so interesting.... kamala is a huge fan of carol’s in the comics, she is her mentor/idol. the ms. marvel series will also resportedly lead into cm2. and monica, well, monica knew her when she was a little kid. wandavision implies that there’s some bad blood between carol and monica though, not sure why. maybe because carol left and never came back? (until endgame)
post-credits scene of wandavision appears to tie into this, having monica go up into space at the reqeust of her “mom’s old friend.” again, not clear who that is. this could also be a tie in to secret invasion though, so we’ll see. or both.
zawe ashton has been cast as an unknown villain... a lot of people are actually speculating that she may play rogue? which would be fascinating, as there’s a comic arc where rogue steals her powers and memories. BUT there’s still no confirmation that X-men exist in the MCU so for now i remain skeptical.
they are looking to cast a ‘john boyega’ or ‘michael b jordan’ type which makes me wonder if they are going to create a new character, a “younger” war machine to be her love interest? (note: carol and rhodey are a huge thing in comics!) carol obviously does not look her age but her and don cheadle.... that just doesn’t work. which is why i wonder.
ant-man and the wasp: quantumania
in addition to scott and hope, pretty much all the major players are returning including: luis, hank pym, janet van dyne
cassie lang has been recast with an actress 5 years older, which is really making me wonder if they are going to make her stinger in this movie! (aka one of the main young avengers)
the villain: kang the conqueror! this dude time travels. original name nate richards. in the comics, kang travels back in time to rescue his younger self (nate) from an attack that would help shape him towards a life of villainy. kang also gives him some fancy armor. his younger self actually is like, what the fuck dude? and renounces his destiny, becoming a hero. and he makes his armor look like iron man, calling himself iron lad. who is a young avenger. which also makes me wonder about cassie lang.
otherwise not much is known!
guardians of the galaxy vol. 3
james gunn is returning, i’m mixed about this...he really does *get* the guardians though.
based on the gotg2 post credits scene, i think we can assume adam warlock will be a HUGE part of this. there are multiple versions of him, some villainous and some heroic, but no idea how this is gonna turn out.
no word yet on whether thor will be involved, or if those ravagers they introduced will be involved.
fantastic four
will be directed by the spiderman guy, john watts.
otherwise we know literally nothing.
aaaaand that’s the roundup!

What If Episode 7
So many cameos and things happened that I’m still kinda processing it. A few things that stood out (spoilers, obviously)
Natalie Portman is BACK, baby
Darcy married HOWARD?!?!? Darcy Duck?!?!
Coulson! And Maria Hill looking more like her comic-book counterpart (is that eye shadow?) and sounding... more Canadian than normal! and Sam L. Jackson got 1 line!
seeing Skrulls in animated form making me nerd out a bit.
Wondering if there were any Kree then I realised they're all just assholes (at least in the MCU) anyway so of course they wouldn’t come to a party
Giant Jotunn Loki!
I love the casual connectivity to captain marvel. Now bring that back for the TV shows, please.
Thor and Carol flying over that woman relaxing in a tropical resort = TAHITI reference?
Thor just told Brie Larson Captain Marvel to “smile more” and I don’t know how to feel about it
Every party boys worst fear - their mother
Is that the Guardians?
Infinity Stones Ultron?!
This episode was a bit goofier than usual so if you ignore the fact that Captain Marvel can punch Thor across the entire Atlantic Ocean then it’s pretty great and funny.
I think the “pooper” joke ran on for a bit too long...? just me?
Update: that really WAS Mr. Krabs Clancy Brown doing Surtur flirting with the statue of liberty. I think the MCU has peaked.

At least now we know why tv!Loki seems ooc. the real Loki went to a Hyundai dealer and that TV show character is just a Skrull or something he gave some of his old clothes to throw everyone off his scent.

Theory on why the Loki show is last in the lineup
I’m loving the MCU TV shows so far, but I’ve got a few fun theories floating around already and I’m wondering if anyone else has thought about these things in a more organized way than I have.
1. The Numbers
In WandaVision, there seemed to be more numbers displayed prominently than was really needed for storytelling purposes. Numbers that Darcy’s team said or wrote, house numbers, radio numbers, etc.
So far TFATWS has the same relationship with numbers. They’re starting to jump out at me, whenever they’re displayed prominently or said distinctly.
They’re all short numbers, with a few digits max. I don’t have any distinct impressions as to what they could be referring to, but if there is some sort of through-pattern that’s tied to Loki and his time-hopping shenaniganry in the last show, they could function as anchors, coordinates, time-stamps, etc. Hard and fast locations in time and space which could serve either as official info for the TVA to work with using its own systems, or as Loki’s own waypoints when he’s got his beloved Tesseract.
2. What you see isn’t always what you get
The last time we see Spectrum, she’s being invited upward by a Skrull who was disguised as a human agent.
Loki’s a god of tricks and illusion and chaos. I saw a great parallel post that showed Darcy (in WandaVision) and Loki (in Ragnarok) dressed in blue and wrapped in chains, and I had the crack thought: what if that’s really Loki somehow?
Between Loki’s impending chaos and this actual instance of someone not being who they seemed to be, I can’t shake the concept that some of the other characters we see in WandaVision and TFATWS might not be who we think they are. And that more than one of them may be various iterations of Loki, toying with the timeline while he also does whatever else he does in his own show.
3. Loki’s show comes last in the lineup because that’s the big reveal
If there has been a series of slender plot lines tying these three shows together, then Loki is the one who’s going to tug on them and make them dance. Of course he has to go last. He’s the God of Stories.
But we’ll have to be patient a while longer, because he’s not going to give us his secrets ahead of time. He’s going to wait for the best possible moment and then shine, so we will adore him for his clever genius. So until then, we’ll just have to wait for him to masterfully retcon the universe as we know it.

What we know about Marvel's TV Shows and my theories
Wandavision: Wanda is crazy and dealing with depression. Most likely was pregnant prior to Vision's death and the twins are really their kids. Predicting that its been about 3-9 months since Vision died at this time of the show. Billy and Tommy were born in the hex and because of that they are effect by the hex
Falcon and Winter Soldier: boyfriends trying to figure out their relationship after their other boyfriend left them for his ex. His neice his pissed and kicking ass because of that. They have to also save the world. BUCKY HAS SHORT HAIR AGAIN AND IM GOING TO DIE CAUSE PEOPLE WITH SHORT HAIR ARE HOT.... also Patriot just shows up in the show
Loki: Loki is confused. We are fucking confused. The world is confusing. Loki should be King.
Hawkeye: Clint and his wife are on break probably. Clint is trying to redeem himself. Kate reminds Clint of his daughter. Clint is deaf now. Lucky is his esa or just the awesome dog. Clint is training Kate like he was training his daughter. Kate has daddy issues.
Ms. Marvel: teenage superhero has to learn how to deal with being a superhero. Maybe spidey and Ms. Marvel friendship? I want that cause they are pals. Lead into Captain Marvel 2. Carol might make a cameo in like the last episode.
Moon Knight: yes yes yes. Oscar Issac. Moon Knight is cool. Another one that I want to either team up with Spidey or team up with May Parker cause I have seen it in a cartoon (aka MSM 2017). Moon Knight is a solo person so it will be interesting.
She-Hulk: Jennifer Walter so that means we need Johnny Storm in this cause we do. Just a cameo. Maybe a Peter Parker. Spideytorch moment? Please? Anyways Daredevil should appear.
Secret Invasion: Teddy appear please? Skrull stuff means we need Teddy or Xavin. Make Runaways better and/or introduce our favorite Skrull. Fury you better not hurt another one of my babies.
Ironheart: Riri!!!!! Also just have my baby Harley in this so we can have Riri have the gay best friend who knew Tony. Morgan can make a cameo if you all want but Harley.
Armor Wars: Rhodey taking the lead mantle. Cameo from Pepper, Happy, Morgan, Riri, and Harley will all be appreciated. Sam better show up to complain about his husband for at least one episode. Rhodey maybe mention that he loved Tony?

Just rewatched Loki again & I still don't understand why, just why TVA employees are all humans. Their work is to protect the timeline throughout the whole universe so why is there no extraterrestrial beings then?
We know it's not like we're at the "human department", we saw a skrull being brought in during the first episode. We know the whole TVA is created by the Time Keepers to make sure the sacred timeline isn't disrupted, the whole universe is basically in their palms so why did they chose human of all species to run TVA?
Why would they choose something so vulnerable, who needs to eat, who makes mistakes, who can just be easily killed, when they can simply create something better, with not even a chance of failing, for the missions? It's so inefficient to be having employees dying so easily, even if the Time Keepers can't grant immortality, there's gotta be a species that's a lot more resilient than human, right?
Thanks for reading through another addition to the on-going series "Look it's just tv show production logic, stop overthinking everything". Tune in next week for even more of me overthinking everything!

Thoughts : WandaVision [Disney+, Episode 9] (2021)
Tumblr media
All good things must come to an end, and after roughly a year of speculation and nearly two fabulous months of weekly anticipation, Disney + and Marvel Studios have (seemingly) wrapped up the highly anticipated MCU-based series WandaVision.  For the general viewing public, it’s been a slow but steady growth of new fans (which I anticipate to boom now that the series can be binged in its entirety), but for many of us with a vested interest in the MCU (as well as a deep love for nostalgiac television and referential film), WandaVision became the gift that kept on giving : giving us fuel for what became rampant speculation, giving us a deeper insight into Wanda Maximoff as a grieving character and a being with power greater than she understood, and giving us new characters that will surely have a lasting impact on both movies and television series moving forward.
As an experiment on connecting a cinematic universe to an entertainment medium not dependent on box office returns, I would consider WandaVision a success, and one that can not so easily be duplicated by DC or any other entertainment entity.  Over a decade of work has been put into the foundation of the MCU that was Phases One - Three, and with a lore firmly established, it was really up to Marvel to fumble transitioning their storytelling style into longform storytelling for television.  With a handful of new series on the way, and movies expected by year’s end, the future is exciting for both Marvel and fans of the MCU alike.
Tumblr media
THE STORY THUS FAR
Tumblr media
Episode 09 : The Series Finale With Tommy (Jett Klyne) and Billy (Julian Hilliard) firmly in tow, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) continues to goad Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) into a confrontation.  Wanda eventually gives in and attempts to attack Agatha, but Agatha absorbs the blows, revealing that she can (and intends to) absorb all of Wanda’s abilities.  A greyed-out version of Vision (Paul Bettany) appears and accosts Wanda, but Wanda’s Vision created in The Hex comes to her rescue, confronting and battling Grey Vision while attempting to appeal to any reason in existence.  Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) watches from the captivity of a nearby home, with Quicksilver (Evan Peters) standing guard.  Director Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg) recaptures Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) outside of The Hex, but Woo manages to contact Quantico.  Before they can arrive, however, Wanda is forced to partially remove The Hex by Agatha, and Hayward takes advantage of the situation to move S.W.O.R.D. forces into The Hex.  After realizing that a complete removal of The Hex will cost her Tommy, Billy and Vision, Wanda seals The Hex once again, leading to a final confrontation between her and Agatha Harkness with major consequences.
Tumblr media
THOUGHTS ON THE SHOW For a series that was supposed to introduce us to Phase Four of the MCU, as well as potentially set up Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, I can’t say that I have any complaints with the execution.  I came into the show with Wanda Maximoff and Vision as two of my favorite characters, and like many people, I’d been referring to Wanda as Scarlet Witch despite this name designation having not taken place within the MCU.  Being rewarded with gift was the perfect amount of fan service (if you can even call it that, as it is key to Wanda’s story), and the way that future storylines have been set up will lead to worlds of revelations in the coming years.
Watching those willing to enjoy the series during its initial run lead to some of the grandest and widespread sets of theories and speculations that I’ve ever seen in regard to a TV show, although the implications of impact on the MCU cinematic universe makes that understandable.  The MCU is certainly showing a new approach to this speculation, as the inclusion of Evan Peters (as well as the fun and games they had with the introduction of the latest Spider-man film title) showed us, and I expect more trolling and swerves moving forward.  Be it Mephisto, Nightmare, Grim Reaper, Reed Richards, Professor X, Magneto or even Deadpool, the list of names that people attempted to will into existence was incredibly impressive (although, props to those who speculated on Skrulls, who I imagine will be EVERYWHERE moving forward).
As we move forward with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki on Disney +, and the eventual release of Spider-man : No Way Home and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, I anticipate more magic, more cosmic adventures, and more mind-bending antics that will introduce (and remove) characters from the playing field in soon to be iconic ways.  The future is really and truly an open door of possibilities the way that the MCU and Marvel are stepping their game up, and if WandaVision is any indication, be ready for some bold steps ahead.
Tumblr media
As we move forward with Wanda Maximoff embracing her Scarlet Witch designation, and the depths of her powers in turn, it seems as if we are seeing Marvel take their already established practice of blurring the lines between hero and villain (a la Bucky) to staggering new heights.  It seems as if not even Wanda knows what the true ceiling for her powers is, but with the final moments of her battle with Agatha and the image of her dedicating a projection to absorbing the secrets of the Dark Hold, her ability to learn and adapt appears to be a key element to her strength.  With Agatha outright stating that Wanda’s powers exceed that of the Sorcerer Supreme, a clear line in the sand has seemingly been drawn between Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange.  Ironically, the discovery of her potential has only made the implied fear from the Infinity Saga into a very real thing in the wake of her manipulation of Westview, which could separate her from the Avengers for a time.
Tumblr media
Many speculated that WandaVision would play out as a sort of swansong for the Vision character, and while that appears to be the case for Wanda’s approximation of Vision, the enlightenment given to Grey Vision (and the absence of a resolution for this new character) leaves the door wide open for what will be with the character.  As a character (and also thanks to Paul Bettany’s stellar performance of said character), Vision continues to be one of the most compelling members of the MCU cinematic universe with his consistently thought-provoking and deeply emotional dialogue.  I thought that WandaVision would be a one-off, and based on the upcoming slate of films that may be the case, but with many unanswered questions left, I wouldn’t be surprised of Vision and Wanda find their way back to the realm of the limited series (again, contingent on character involvement in the already slated projects).
Tumblr media
Bravo to Kathryn Hahn for bringing Agatha Harkness to life, and making her an instant fan favorite.  With her imprisonment presented at the end of WandaVision, we are not only seeing a potentially powerful played being put on ice and ready to reemerge at any given moment, but her connections to Mephisto and the Fantastic 4 leaves her open for future involvement in the MCU as a key player.  With Westview being so close to Avengers headquarters, she also serves as a living reference library for Wanda (although, as mentioned before, Wanda’s connection to the Avengers is unclear at this point).
Tumblr media
Another fan favorite was Teyonah Parris, who stepped into the MCU fold in a gigantic way as Monica Rambeau.  Using her to bring “reality” into the series was a beautiful play, with her inclusion in The Blip serving as both a marker in the MCU timeline and an emotional shock for viewers looking for a character to root for.  It feels as if we have only seen the tip of the iceberg in regard to Monica’s power potential, which leaves room for her evolution to take place on-screen, and based on what we’ve seen thus far, it feels like Photon, Spectrum, Captain Marvel, or possibly even some combination of the three could be her next step.  With Nick Fury showing his hand in the form of a Skrull contact, it is almost a sure thing that Monica Rambeau will be playing a key role in the upcoming Secret Invasion storylines.
Tumblr media
The appearance of Tommy and Billy marked a huge point of story potential for the MCU, and with so much of their fate left up in the air, seeing where their journey heads will certainly be interesting.  With announcements of a handful of future MCU characters on the way, it seems certain that Marvel has plans for the Young Avengers.  As previously mentioned, tying the twins physical form to The Hex, only to have them still seemingly alive and in existence somewhere, opens up two very specific doors of narrative : option one being a future encounter with Mephisto, and option two being Wanda’s journey for her twins serving as the breaking point for the Multiverse that sets up the Doctor Strange film.
Tumblr media
I am even more excited about the future of the MCU now that I know where Wanda, Vision and all those tied to this series currently sit.  With the rampant rumors out there in connection to Spider-man : No Way Home, who even knows if these spaces that each character occupies will be the same by the time we revisit them.  What I do know is that the MCU/Marvel Studios and Disney + make a good team, and I will be wholly invested moving forward with anything that comes out of their collective camp.
