Mortal Kombat (2021)
My rating: 4/10
Of course the real battle here was between myself and overwhelming boredom, and given that I ended up falling asleep about half an hour into this, I suppose boredom won. This is, basically, the unskippable cutscene at the beginning of the game, stretched to feature length and filled with pointless fanservice - did anybody else fly into a white hot rage every time they said a catchphrase from the games for absolutely no good reason?

Movie Review | Mortal Kombat (McQuoid, 2021)
Tumblr media
Over the last few days, I ended up rewatching the 1995 Mortal Kombat and watching for the first time Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, because they were both about to leave Tubi in the near future, and got some enjoyment from the modest thrills of the former and the avant garde incoherence of the latter. Now, Netflix, sensing my weakness, decided to hold a gun to the head of the 2021 reboot and threaten to remove it from their service in a week or two. So naturally I caved. But I’ll let you in on a little secret. This is not a movie I would ever bother watching in any other circumstance, so sure, I’ll take the excuse. I’ll lull Netflix into a false sense of security. And then when it least expects it…. POW! Flawless Victory! Or something.
Anyway, I complained that the earlier movies were lit too harshly for my liking and not always pleasant to look at. I would gladly take either of them over this one on a basic visual level. Those movies are lit harshly, but they’re at least lit. Like many a modern (attempted) blockbuster, this is characterized by unceasingly dim, murky, flat digital cinematography that will leave you squinting or at least questioning the brightness settings on your TV for the entire runtime. On top of that, the movie is edited indifferently, with fight scenes that probably clarify as legible, but are usually cut to neuter the impact of any of the hits. There’s a decent fight scene at the beginning between Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada (both of whom sadly have nowhere enough screentime), and another at the end (a 2-on-1 fight bringing back Taslim and Sanada and adding the lead), but everything in between feels totally limp, despite the abundance of gore.
Unlike the earlier films, this delivers on the gruesome deaths the video games are known for, but aside from that, there’s little of the fun you’d expect given the material. Shockingly, there isn’t even a tournament, which you’d think would be given based on the premise of the video games. The movie feels studio-noted to death, so that it devotes the entire story to laborious setup and worldbuilding and saddling us with a totally bland protagonist for fear that audiences might be too stupid to understand the concept of the franchise (martial arts with magic powers). We can’t just rush into the magic powers, we need to spend two thirds of the fucking movie making the characters learn how to use them. We can’t just make Liu Kang or Johnny Cage or Sonya Blade or someone people might remember from the video games or the earlier movies, the main character has to be some totally bland lame-o with the most generic of backstories that everybody has to explain shit to constantly. And we can’t just blast the techno theme that everybody knows, that would be undignified, so instead we get a dour orchestral rendition at quarter speed. There’s some awful “but seriously, folks” energy running through this, rendering the majority of the characters po-faced and sanded of their quirks. Only Josh Lawson’s Kano registers at all by virtue of having any personality, even if that personality is being the craziest Australian since Crocodile Dundee.
So super lame, but if they make another one I’ll probably watch it, who am I kidding. It just needs to threaten to leave a streaming service first.

there's an alternative universe where james wan and timo tjahjanto are working on the mortal kombat reboots instead of train to busan and I'd be living in peace instead of gamespot cutting my lifespan in half every couple months reminding everyone on twitter who doesn't read articles that a remake is happening but not that they're doing it

Welcome to the Dead Guy Death Match Elimination Round!
Due to the broad nature of death as a concept, most of the submitted characters only received a few votes each causing a massive tie. I figured the fairest way to sort out this issue would be to hold an elimination round to let you guys vote on who you want to make it into the bracket.
There will be two elimination rounds the first of which will start on Monday the 3rd of April at 3pm BST and the second will start on Saturday the 8th of April at 3pm BST.
Elimination Round 1 will feature polls of 5 or 6 unrelated characters (all of the matchups were generated randomly) for you to vote on. The lowest voted character will be eliminated and all of the remaining options will progress to the bracket.
Elimination Round 2 will feature polls of differing numbers of characters from the same or similar media and only the highest ranked character among them will progress to the bracket, all of the others will be eliminated.
Both sets of polls will last 24 hours.
I've tried my best to only include official images for all of the characters on the polls but I'm not familiar with every series listed so, when the polls go up, if you notice I've used a fanart or cosplay image without permission or credit please let me know and I'll add credit and correct it for any future appearances of that character.
The matchups are listed under the read more and hyperlinked to the polls
I apologise if I’ve accidentally spelled something wrong or used a wrong name for something, I’m not familiar with every series listed.
There will be spoilers for many series ahead.

So Tati Gabrielle has been cast as the lead in Mortal Kombat, so no return to Uncharted 2 for her 😩
Tumblr media
Wowww!!!
Tumblr media
This is so exciting for her!!! 😁👏🏾
I'm happy for her! Thanks Anon!
I've been saying since "Uncharted" that I hoped Hollywood would use her for more big screen films, coz Tati is definitely talented.
She's a martial artist too, so this role is def right up her alley! 👏🏾🙂
She's a great actress, and I can't wait to see what she will bring in the future.
No comment on the endless Hollywood remakes. 🙄 I guess Hollywood has learned that if it's not a remake, a sequel, or a "reboot", then ppl just funny go to the theaters I guess. 🥴🤷🏾‍♀️
