Tag 9 People You Want to Know Better
I was tagged by @anamoon63! Thank you so much!
Last Song: I just played Doxa by Secret Number. It's a bit over-produced for my taste but it's a bop tbh
Last Show: Just finished Ted Lasso yesterday. Probably gonna re-watch the whole season again soon for the ✨details✨
Currently watching: Nothing. I've been bingeing short serials these days so unless it's still airing, I've probably already finished it. Though I am probably gonna watch Ocean Likes Me sometime in the next 24 hours. I don't expect it to be good, but I do expect it to be gay.
Currently reading: Also nothing, because with reading as well, I tend to be a binge-er, so it's best not to start something unless I have time. Though I am currently being thoroughly entertained by @petrolstationflowers and her Pathetic Loserman challenge on the daily. Don't sleep on this one guys, it's hilarious.
Current Obsession: Still the artists formerly known as DGNA (now called Ramjjunhwan or KIJ or idfk, I don't think they've decided yet). Please join me in Stanning these nobodies if you love talent and earnestness and fully-adult human people (rather than wee kpop babies). Or, you know, glorious abs on fully-adult human people (click that and thank me later).
I'll try to tag some people but feel free to ignore me! I already tagged @petrolstationflowers, and I'll add @frostedshore @oasislandingresident @nocturnalazure @bool-prop @cororon @nikatyler @simnovels-blog and @llamaheart! ❤

The benefit of a repost from another platform is that it’s only been a couple days and everything is complete, so that means Pt. 2 is already all queued up to post! As always though, you can also find this chapter HERE in full on WordPress, though I haven’t yet updated those posts with the newer, touched-up photos I’ve been using here...not sure if I can/will. We’ll see! Anyway....
If you’d prefer not to see these posts, they will be tagged as So What Are We Now? (Pt.2), so you can add that tag to your block list. They will begin posting tomorrow!
Trigger/Content Warnings for this part only include some strong language I believe...didn’t catch anything else, but let me know if you feel otherwise and I’ll change this accordingly.
Once again whether you’re reading this for the first time or revisiting, I hope you’ll enjoy the culmination to this flashback story.
Thank you for being here and for supporting Different Winters! ♥

I’d not yet unlocked for the morning shift, and I thought not to do it now, but that figure was one I had seen before. Even then, I thought it inappropriate to say she was familiar to me. She wasn’t. I didn’t know her name or where she’d come from, and I certainly didn’t know what to do with her now that she was here.

Hello, Anya. I see I have two letters from you. I am sorry for taking so long to reply.
I am the Seth that went through the hole in the woods, and I am also the Seth who had to come back to San Myshuno. Perhaps there is only one Seth after all.
I actually did have some fun in Granite Falls. The sun grants me reprieves, now and then.

Gah, I meant to queue all this up over the weekend, but I didn’t have much time to myself, so now will have to do!
As mentioned previously, I’ve decided to repost So, What Are We Now? here on Tumblr because 1.) It’s important to the upcoming Augustus and Gemma V chapter, and 2.) I originally posted it to my blog in 2016, so even those who have already read it might benefit from a refresher. Plus, it keeps this Tumblr from being empty while I write, haha. Also, the story stands on its own pretty well, so even newbies can read it and understand. Woot!
To introduce- So, What Are We Now? is a two-part flashback chapter to Augustus’ days in high school when he met Isaac. It provides the background for why Isaac’s reappearance in the present day has Augustus so unsettled and confused, and it goes into more depth about who Isaac is in the first place. I’ll start with posting Pt. 1, and then I’ll do another introductory post for Pt. 2 when the time comes.
If you’d prefer not to see these posts, they will be tagged as So What Are We Now? (Pt.1), so you can add that tag to your block list. They will begin posting tomorrow!
Trigger/Content Warnings for this part include some strong language, mentions of child abuse, mentions of homophobia, and internalized homophobia. Those last three are all part of one conversation, which I will tag accordingly when the time comes (e.g. tw: child abuse mention, tw: homophobia mention, tw: internalized homophobia). Wow, I really hate Isaac’s parents!
Ugh. Anyway, I actually really love this story and I hope you’ll enjoy it if you’re reading it for the first time, or will enjoy revisiting it if you’ve already read it. I even touched-up the photos a little, so there’s that!
Also, I can’t mention this story without thanking @dandylion240, who sent me the “So, what are we now?” prompt request in the first place. Without your interest, this story literally would not exist, so seriously, THANK YOU!
Thank all of you, in fact, for being here and supporting Different Winters ♥

HOORAY!!!! After posting progress updates about this for MONTHS, I have finally completed Chapter 5.21: In My Arms (Pt.1 of 2). Yes, yes, another Pt. 1/Pt. 2 split because I do not know self-control, but in my defense I was covering a lot of material as I try to wrap this generation up. Anyway, THIS TIME I WILL NOT MAKE YOU WAIT YEARS FOR PT. 2. I AM GOING TO STAY ON THIS. In the meantime, despite being split this is still quite a lot, so hopefully it’ll tide you over until then, heh.
As always, please don’t hesitate to comment and let me know what you think so far. It’s been so long since a Joanne update! On that note, in case you missed it, a fairly detailed recap of Generation 5 can be found HERE. Hopefully it’s helpful given how much time it’s been.
Lastly, if you’d like to start from the beginning or any other point in the story, you can use this Chapters Page to navigate.
Happy reading and thank you for being here! It continues to mean more to me than I can fully express ♥

At 2:27 A.M. though, Augustus received definitive evidence that nothing was okay. Fast asleep, he hadn’t known it at the time, but when he woke up for school and checked his phone, it was there glowing brightly on the screen: A text from Isaac.
Augustus’ heart jumped as he hurriedly unlocked his phone and pulled up the message, but just as suddenly as hope had risen in his chest it was shot down by a high-precision sniper rifle. The text didn’t even sound like it was from Isaac. It was impersonal and strange—like a text written to anyone other than him and the contents made no sense at all:
Hey. This is out of the blue, but as it turns out, I’m moving. Actually, moved. Out of state. Talk about having impulsive parents, huh? All that last minute packing was a bitch. I don’t think I’ll be able to get in contact with you much anymore. I’m sorry. You really were a great friend.
“What the hell?” Augustus muttered, figuring it was some kind of bad joke, and then jabbed the “call” button next to Isaac’s name. The line rang once, and then an automated recording began to sound in Gus’ ear:
“We’re sorry. You have reached a number that is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number and try your call again.”

Whether sensing this uneasiness or whether reading something else from his expression, Isaac reached down and took his hand in his. The act caught Augustus completely off-guard, heat spreading up his arm and enfolding him like his hand in Isaac’s grasp. He looked at him in surprise, but the brunet wouldn’t meet his eyes, his gaze instead trained on the winding trail before them.
“Maybe you do help,” Isaac said as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. “Maybe you help your parents just by being there and caring.”
“You think so?” Augustus asked somewhat absently.
“Yeah. I do.”
They continued walking hand in hand, shade gradually becoming scarcer as they left most of the massive oaks behind them. A squirrel was scurrying about among the brush, presumably looking for a place to bury the acorn it was carrying in its mouth.
Augustus tried again to catch Isaac’s gaze, and this time was successful as the brunet finally glanced his way. He smiled shyly, squeezing Isaac’s hand, and then positively beamed when Isaac squeezed back. Augustus felt like maybe he should say something then, something meaningful and sweetly profound, but nothing he could think of quite felt right. How was it that there could be so many thousands of words in existence, and yet none of them seemed to accurately describe what he wanted to convey now?

Gemma’s arms wrapped around him and Augustus fell into them as he dissolved into loud, broken sobs that scared even himself. He’d never even known he was capable of making such wretched sounds. He’d never felt so utterly destroyed…and he felt so disgustingly pathetic for it.
Pathetic.
Not because it was unreasonable for a person to be upset by such bitter disappointment, but because of the awareness of a truth powerful enough to drag his very conceptualization of reality to its knees and obliterate it:
For as much as Augustus had treasured even the sheer existence of the golden-eyed brunet, Isaac had clearly never felt the same about him.

“Augustus?”
The raven-haired boy tensed, his sneakers skidding to a halt and his jaw clenching. He would recognize his twin sister’s voice among thousands.
One quick glance behind him confirmed his suspicions. Gemma was standing by the door, looking at him anxiously and likely wishing that he would come back upstairs instead of wearing down the lacquered wood floors of their sprawling basement.
Augustus folded his arms firmly across his chest. “I don’t feel like talking right now,” he managed to say, but his voice didn’t sound like his own. It was flat, distant, and made Gemma’s face fall. He could see it in the reflection of the mirror on the opposite wall. He could also see the unmistakable guilt etched onto her features for having instilled such hope in him, but this wasn’t her fault—it was Gus’ fault alone for having been stupid enough to trust the bastard.
Gemma didn’t respond. For once, she seemed to have neither words of comfort nor reproach; no logical arguments why he shouldn’t be feeling the way he did, nor even reasons why he should rejoin the family upstairs.
Augustus almost wished that she did.
Tell me how much of an idiot I’m being, Gemma. Tell me how Isaac is a fucking piece of shit asshole who was never worth my time! Tell me that I’m better off without him, please.
