Westland Superlynx
In the early 1990s, Westland incorporated some of the technology from the Naval Lynx-3 design into a less-radical Super Lynx. This featured BERP rotor blades, the Westland 30-derived tail rotor, Gem 42 engines, a new under-nose 360-degree radar installation and an optional nose-mounted electro-optical sensor turret. Royal Navy Lynx HAS.3s upgraded to Super Lynx standard were known in service as the Lynx HMA.8, and several export customers ordered new-build or upgraded Super Lynxes. From the 1990s onwards, Westland began offering the Super Lynx 200, which was equipped with LHTEC CTS800 engines, and the Super Lynx 300, which also had a new cockpit and avionics derived from the AgustaWestland EH101. Both of these models have achieved several export sales. In 2002, Flight International reported that more than 40 variants of the Lynx were in service, numbering almost 400 aircraft having been built for various customers.

Spanish Navy retires its last Sea King helicopters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/28/2022 - 14:00 in Helicopters
The Spanish Navy has retired the last of its Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King helicopters, after 55 years of service and more than 100,000 hours of flight time.
The last two helicopters - the last of a fleet of 18 aircraft - completed their last landings on Thursday, June 23, and will be replaced by the SH-60F Seahawks.
Tumblr media
The first SH-3 was delivered to the navy to the Rota naval base aboard the USS Independence in June 1966, with subsequent aircraft delivered in four lots.
The aircraft were operated by the Navy's 5th Naval Air Squadron to operate anti-submarine missions from its base on the aircraft carrier Dedalo. In addition, three helicopters were subsequently equipped with British Searchwater radar systems in 1987 for use as part of an Early Air Alert mission.
Tumblr media
After the introduction of the SH-60B Seahawk in 2003, the squadron's main mission was later changed to amphibious and logistical support. The gradual withdrawal of the fleet began later in 2017 with the arrival of the new SH-60F Seahawks.
The U.S. government recently proposed the sale of eight MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to the Spanish Navy in March 2022. In addition, the Spanish Ministries of Defense and Interior also recently ordered 36 Airbus H135 helicopters in December 2021.

SMART SHOOTER LTD LICENSE
The US government had refused to grant an export license for the T129 LHTEC T800 turboshaft engine to Pakistan.SmartVet develops, manufactures, commercializes and markets veterinary medicines and vaccines. Instead, the country will explore buying the Z-10 attack helicopter from China. Pakistan has decided not to purchase the T129 attack helicopter from Turkey, the director general of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has disclosed. Madhavan, Chief Managing Director, said that the design has been finalized and some manufacturing activities have started. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is confident that the first Tejas MK-2 prototype will be rolled out by end of this year or early next year. The system is a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile capable of all-weather day-and-night operation. The AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile), also designated AIM-120, has a 30 to 40 mile range and can reach a speed of Mach 4. Raytheon Systems was awarded a $13.5 million contract by the UK Ministry of Defense for in-service support for the AMRAAM missile system. Extremely lightweight and therefore allowing long mission endurance, SMASH Dragon integrates a unique stabilization concept with the SMASH technology that enables the system to accurately hit static and moving targets while flying. It can incorporate various types of assault rifles, sniper rifles, 40mm, and other ammunition with great precision. SMASH Dragon is an advanced robotic weaponry payload that can be mounted on different drones and other unmanned aerial platforms. FLIGHTLINE: 140 - MIDAIR RETRIEVAL
Refined during the 1950's, mid-air retrieval involved capturing an object descending under a parachute, using an aircraft fitted with special gear.
The first recorded use of this technique was during the development phase of the Ryan Firebee drone, when modified C-119 Flying Boxcars were used to snag the smaller aircraft. On operational missions, Sikorsky SH-3 Sea Kings were modified to capture the drones, and still carry on the task today.

♫CATCH A FALLING STAR AND PUT IT IN YOUR POCKET...♫
Later, C-119s were also used to recover film capsules from CORONA reconnaissance satellites, supplemented and then later replaced by JC-130B and JC-130H Hercules transports. The crews for these missions consisted of two pilots, one flight engineer, two telemetry operators, one winch operator, and four riggers. The telemetry operators would acquire the location of the satellite and relay the info to the pilots. Once visually acquired, the pilots would head on course to the satellite as it was descending towards the Pacific Ocean, with the first intercept attempt usually at an altitude of approximately 50,000 ft. The winch operator and the riggers would deploy the retrieving apparatus, called the “Loop”, which consisted of a high quality nylon rope into which a series of brass hooks had been spliced. Once the parachute was snagged by the “loop”, the winch line would pay out and stop, at which point the winch would reverse and capsule was retrieved.

MORE COMPLICATED THAN GETTING YOUR VACATION PHOTOS DEVELOPED.
C-119s and C-130s were also used to retrieve film from various CIA and USAF balloon programs such as MOBY DICK, MOGUL and GENETRIX. Specially equipped Sikorski CH-37 Mojave helicopters were similarly used to recover ICBM reentry vehicles during sub-orbital tests at the White Sands Missile Range. Mid-air retrieval was also used, with less success, in the CIA’s M/D-21 program, under which a high speed drone was launched from a modified A-12 (and later on, a B-52D) to overfly and photograph areas deemed off limits to even the A-12 and SR-71. The D-21 would then fly back to a designated area, where the drone would eject its film hatch, which would be captured by a JC-130 and returned for processing; the D-21 drone would then self destruct. The program was beset by technical issues however, and none of the four operational missions carried out ended successfully.

"WHAT EXACTLY IS GENESIS"?
Tumblr media
-Artists rendering of the Genesis, shown in collection mode. | Illustration: NASA/JPL
In a recent example, mid-air retrieval was to be used on the Genesis sample return probe. Launched on 8 August 2001, the Genesis probe was directed into orbit at the L₁ Lagrange point while wafers made from various materials would collect particles from solar wind at different times (periods of fast wind and slow wind), as well as from a coronal mass-ejection (CME) and a baseline collection. These wafers would then be launched back to earth in a capsule, which would parachute down and be recovered by a helicopter. Due to a sensor malfunction however, the parachutes did not deploy, and the capsule impacted the ground, breaking open the samples.

Despite the damage and contamination, samples of the dirt taken from the impact site allowed scientists to sift through the remains and weed out terrestrial dust from the solar wind particles. As it happened, dirt infiltration proved to be less severe than contamination from Genesis’ own lubricants and other materials, and JPL was able, with a bit of work, to achieve most of their goals despite the mishap.
REDUCE. RE-USE. RECYCLE
Currently, United Launch Alliance intends to eventually use helicopters to retrieve the engines from their Vulcan Centaur heavy-lift launch vehicle, while US/NZ startup Rocket Lab is planning on reusing the first stage of their Electron small-lift rocket after retrieval by a helicopter.
