I’ve decided to stop caring if people don’t like OC’s because at the end of the day, it’s my writing and I enjoy creating my own characters. It’s okay if it’s not your thing, to each their own.
But it’s something I enjoy writing and will want to explore in the future. So far, this OC/Kaiba / Puzzleshipping story is just an outline with random snippets I have written in random.
I wanted to share one of my favorite snippets so far. It’s when Kaiba and my OC, Sumire (Sumi), are stuck in her apartment during a snow storm. The power is out and they’re having to get creative to stay warm. (Not spicy lol shocking I know)
I hope if anyone does read this, they enjoy it.
“I’m cashing in a favor.”
Her eyes snapped up to his. “What?”
Kaiba’s eyes avoided hers, and instead narrowed into slants at the floor. “Give me the blanket.”
Her fingers tightened on the warm comforter from her bed, wrapped around her like a cocoon. “No way! I’m freezing!”
He finally leveled a look at her. “You agreed to give me anything I wanted when the time came. Give me the blanket.”
She covered her mouth with the blanket, glaring over the top of it. “You’re cruel.”
“I never claimed to be nice,” he said.
She hesitated, holding the blanket around her like it was a part of her, not wanting to give it up. Yet, she had promised to fulfill any favors he requested. In defeat and with a dramatic sigh, she forced herself to stand and managed to unwrap herself without tripping. Her body instantly grew fiercely cold and goosebumps littered her skin.
With unwilling fingers, she dropped it into his lap. Immediately, he pulled it over himself. She glared and almost felt like crying, wrapping her arms around her body and cuddling up under the kotatsu blanket that she wished she could turn on.
She threw her head down on her arms, facing away from him, and shivered violently, thinking darkly that she should have just left him out in the cold, but then automatically regretted it.
She wouldn’t do that to a person. Even if that person was Seto Kaiba.
The blanket thief.
It took all of five minutes before he sighed dramatically. “Get over here.”
She shook terribly as she lifted her head, blinking at him in confusion. “Hunh?”
He rolled his eyes, looking irritated. “I can hear your teeth chattering from here. The last thing I want is to be sued for letting you die of hyperthermia. Now get over here. It will be warmer if we use body heat.”
Her spine stiffened and she glanced down at the blanket in alarm, before back at him. “You mean like… share it?”
“Obviously,” he said.
She turned away with a sulk. “No! Absolutely not. I couldn’t share a blanket with you. I have a boyfriend and that would be highly inappropriate, not to mention—”
“Of for the love of—” he got up, the blanket falling to the floor and grabbed her, kicking and screaming, before throwing her onto the couch with an oof. She was still protesting when he threw the blanket over the both of them.
“This is not what—” One long arm wrapped around her shoulders and drew her closer, halting any more words and thoughts that could have formed previously.
She sat frozen under the blanket with Kaiba’s arm around her. To her surprise, she felt immediately ten times warmer and she hated herself for enjoying it. She wrinkled her nose for effect, moving a little away from him, but he kept her close. She was practically against his side.
“Stop. It’s the only way we are going to get through the night. I’m not going to touch you so stop being a child and do what you need to do to survive.”
But he was touching her. In many different places, she might add. However, the sane side of her mind told her he was speaking rationally.
Although, all she could think of was the String of Fate card. Her heart quickened and she closed her eyes, both simultaneously relishing in the heavenly warmth and panicking over being so close to another guy.
A guy who was supposedly her soulmate.
“You’re overthinking this,” he said, his voice low and gravely, closer to her ear than she preferred. “I don’t even find you attractive.”
Why she got offended by that was beyond her. Her body tensed and she drew her knees up to her chest while cuddling into the blanket, trying to ignore the warm hand holding her arm and the way her cheek brushed his jacket. Or the way his expensive cologne smelled.
“Well I don’t find you attractive either,” she countered childishly. “You’re probably the ugliest guy I’ve ever seen.”
“Careful, or I’ll let you die of hypothermia.”
She clutched the blanket tighter to her as if he’d take it at any point. “You’ll have to fight me for it.”
He snorted. “You’re like four feet tall. I doubt I’d have to do anything except yank it off of you.”
She scoffed. “I’m five foot two actually and I can hold my own. Jou taught me some self defense techniques and — ”
“When you can stand without shivering, I’ll take you more seriously,” he snidely remarked, making her glare again. “And anything that idiot taught you was more than likely garbage.”

Her Father's Eyes: An Uncharted Waters one-shot
Also on AO3.
Summary: Seto Kaiba stood in a room holding something more precious than any material item: His newborn daughter.
There was a small bundle in his arms.
A small, pink, breathing bundle, with his eyes and what would likely be her mother’s black hair. She bore her grandmother’s name - the one fate had taken much too soon from the world, the catalyst that had led her father to claw his way to the top of everything the world had to offer and more.
And now he had no idea what to do.
He’d cared for babies before, of course, but never completely on his own. His parents had been primary caregivers of Mokuba, and he’d helped his wife care for her niece and nephew when they’d still been little bundles, but doing this on their own for a majority of the time?
But he couldn’t let the façade he’d built up for over a decade crack, not now. Not when his wife was still so unsure about her own parenting capabilities.
He glanced over at the hospital bed, where his wife’s eyes had slipped close, a slow and steady rise and fall of her chest indicating she had finally been able to fall asleep. Good. She needed to recover.
The bundle in his arms shifted, drawing his eyes back down and meeting the curious blue of his daughter.
“Shh,” he whispered. “Your mother has only just fallen asleep.”
She seemed too small, too awkward in his lanky grasp to be real. The midwife who had given her to him had been amused at the great Seto Kaiba fumbling with having to hold his newborn child, and the experience had made him extraordinarily grateful for the many, many NDAs his law division had drawn up for the hospital staff.
Reika had insisted on giving birth in a hospital, and while he had never planned to argue with her about that, Seto had gone to great lengths to ensure her privacy.
He rose to his feet despite the uncharacteristic exhaustion that clung to his body, and moved to the window, glancing between the small gaps in the blinds. No crowds of reporters or well-wishers were to be found. Good.
He opened the blinds just enough so he could see more clearly. It was mid-afternoon now, and in the distance he could see throngs of students having been dismissed from school for the day. The people - ants, really in more ways than one - scurried along the streets, blissfully ignorant of what true work felt like, what true power was like.
“Hinata,” he said quietly, adjusting her in his arms carefully so she was closer to the window, though he knew she had no sense of depth perception yet. “One day, this city will be yours. And I will do everything in my power to make sure you are never hurt by anyone. Especially traitors to our name.”
Hinata, of course, didn’t respond, and simply blinked up at him with her wide, curious gaze, almost as if she already trusted him to be a good father to her.
The only real fatherly experience he remembered had been under Gozaburo, and Seto’s stomach lurched at the thought of treating such a delicate, innocent creature the way Gozaburo had treated him. The collar, the cigars, going a day without food because he’d talked back to him over not wanting his designs to be used for war.
He’d been just shy of twelve when he was adopted, and Gozaburo had held no qualms about using force to get him to comply. Hinata was just a helpless, tiny thing. She couldn’t yet defend herself the way Seto had tried to under Gozaburo.
“She needs to be strong if she’s going to be a Kaiba heir.”
Seto felt his blood run cold and the color drain from his face. He clutched Hinata a little tighter to his chest before he slowly turned to face the voice.
Gozaburo Kaiba sat in one of the guest chairs, a cigar in one hand and looking like he owned the place as he stared Seto down. Though Seto knew it wasn’t possible Gozaburo was here - even if he was still alive, he wouldn’t have made it through the hospital’s front door without someone noticing, let alone into the room itself - the stench of the cigar burned his nostrils.
“She is my daughter, and Reika’s. She will be strong,” he hissed back at the phantom.
“But too strong and you’ll end up like me.”
Seto couldn’t help but press Hinata even further against him, his daughter continuing to blink at him with trust. “How dare you assume I could ever be so cruel that it would drive her to do what I did?”
“You’re a Kaiba , boy. Made strong by my hand. That is the kind of hand you need to raise a strong child.”
“You’re wrong. Genji - ”
Gozaburo laughed, which sent a chill down Seto’s spine. “You’d take parenting advice from a man who abandoned his daughter for a decade?”
He hated that Gozaburo said the dark, unhelpful thought Seto had about his in-laws. Despite his wife’s love for them, and her apparent understanding that they had been blackmailed under threat of Reika’s life, it didn’t mean Seto had to forgive them. They hadn’t seen the six years he had, even if she tried to hide it.
“Takeo - ”
“A politician is hardly any better than I was.”
“Solomon - ”
“Senile, even ten years ago, as you so tried to take advantage of. Face it, I am the best you have when it comes to fatherhood.”
Seto shook his head. Gozaburo had never won against him in the past, and he wasn’t going to let him win now. Not for this. “Then I’ll figure it out myself. I don’t need anyone’s advice on how to raise my daughter. Least of all yours. ”
“Seto?”
He didn’t flinch, staring down his adoptive father and trying not to choke on the cigar smoke. “Go back to sleep, Reika.”
“Seto, he’s not there.”
That had him moving his gaze over to her. She was sitting up in bed, the table lamp illuminating her still-tired features.
Wait, table lamp? When did it become dark enough to need lights on?
He chanced a glance at Gozaburo, finding nothing but the shadows of the table across from Reika’s bed. When he looked down at Hinata, he found her asleep in his arms, oblivious to her father’s insane ranting to a ghost.
“You still need to go back to sleep,” Seto said as he laid Hinata back in the bassinet. “You had a long day.”
“I’ve been asleep for four hours. You haven’t slept since we got here. Besides, Roland texted me to tell me they’re bringing my dinner soon and I’m starving.”
Seto frowned and took a seat on the edge of Reika’s bed. “Fine, but I’m not going to sleep until I know you’ve eaten.”
She sighed. “Fine.” A brief moment of silence, before she reached for his hand, her thumb running along the back of it. “You’ll never be him. If I thought you were going to be, I never would have agreed to marry you, let alone have a child with you.”
A small smile graced his features “Some people think you’re nuts for doing that regardless.”
“I guess that means we’ll have to prove them all wrong, huh?”
He smirked. “We’re Kaibas. We always do.”

Guys I just found my old self insert ygo fic on my regular writing sideblog. It's so embarrassing (like nearly my immortal levels), here's links to all the stuff I posted for it.
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
Chapter 7
Chapter 8
I would be lowkey tempted to rewrite it except, you know, good, but idk. I was using my at the time limited knowledge of Japanese culture (I'm still no expert but I know significantly more) and obviously I've improved in my writing so I cringe every time I look back at it. I would do it differently know... Maybe I will rewrite it for funsies? If there's any interest I'll post here I guess.
This is the PSA that everyone starts somewhere so don't be afraid to just write to the best of your abilities even if you think it sucks bc you'll never get better if you never try <3

Yu-Gi-Oh: Rebirthing
Tumblr media
Chapter Three- Journey to Duelist Kingdom:
"Are you certain you are ready for this?" Atlanna asked two days later, sitting on her host's bed in spirit form as she watched the girl pack the last of what she needed.
"Like I told Sophie, it hardly matters if I am or not. Somebody's got to duel to get my niece back, and it's gonna be me." Alita answered, just as set in her decision as she had been with Sophie.
"I have just been sensing this darkness about as of late... It makes me uneasy, especially since the darkness does not seem to be caused by Pegasus." Atlanna mused. The spirit's words gave Alita pause. 8 years of living with the 5 millennia old spirit had taught her to be cautious if Atlanna ever spoke up about something like this.
"You think it's being caused by someone we haven't met before?" Alita asked. Atlanna closed her eyes for a moment, her head bowed as she tried using her magic to sense the source of the darkness.
"Unfortunately, I cannot specify further... Ever since being locked away in the Millennium Bracelet, my visions have been clouded. Perhaps with time, the answer will reveal itself. I just pray that we are not caught off guard when that day comes." Atlanna answered. Alita nodded after a moment, taking Atlanna's words as a plea for caution.
"In that case, we'll both be on guard." Alita replied. Atlanna nodded in response.
"Thank you."
A couple hours after the conversation with the spirit, Alita was standing on the Domino City docks along with several other contestants. There's gotta be hundreds of people here... Maybe I'm not ready for this after all... Alita shook her head, getting rid of the negative thoughts. No, this tournament isn't for me, I have to remember that I'm fighting to get Bethany back. She gave herself a mental pep talk before the ship’s horn interrupted her thoughts. “Attention all duelists, welcome to this event sponsored by Industrial Illusions. You received with your invitation the star chips that will grant you entry into the contest. You are all elite, invited by us after close observation of your past Duel Monsters contests. You each have a fair and equal chance to win. It all comes down to how well you’ve chosen your cards and how well you play. Now then, duelists, cross the ocean, and enter the Duelist Kingdom.” A tall man in a suit announced. Alita got in line with the other duelists, trying to stop her hands from shaking from the nerves.
“Present your star chips as you board the vessel.” Another man requested of the duelists. Just as Alita was about to show hers, however, a shout came from one of the other guards.
“Hey, you! Get out of here! Only official contestants are allowed on board!”
“How do you know I’m not official?”
“Because the official duelists aren’t trying to sneak on board through the lower hatches.” Two guards started dragging the boy off, but the sight of him gave Alita the impression that she’d seen him before.
“Joey? What the..” A voice sounded off from behind her. When she turned, she saw a short boy with tri-colored hair. That’s Yugi! Alita thought as she watched the interaction.
“Stop struggling! We’re gonna have to throw you out!” The guard shouted at Joey.
“No way, I came here to duel, and I’m gonna duel!” Joey replied. Alita went to step out of line to help when the guard across the table from her stopped her.
“You’re next. Star Chips, please.” He told her. Alita glanced back, watching as Yugi gave Joey one of his star chips. Hopefully they’ll let both of them on. Alita thought before showing the guard her Star Chips. “Thank you, next.” Alita moved forward to keep the line moving, but hesitated for a moment to see one of the guards on the phone before nodding the boys onward. A sigh of relief left Alita, glad that the boys could join the tournament together. As the boat sailed away from the shores of Domino City, Alita leaned her arms against the railing, letting the ocean breeze move her hair out of her face.
“First tournament?” A voice caused Alita to turn around. She came face to face with a girl taller than her by about 4 inches, with familiar sapphire blue eyes and waist length, ebony black hair, kept out of her face by a white headband. She wore a black shirt that hung off her left shoulder, dark jeans and black combat boots, the duelist glove with her two star chips on her left hand.
“My nerves are that obvious?” Alita asked in retalition as the girl stood next to her, leaning her back against the railing and shaking her head.
“Nah, I’ve just never seen you before, so I figured you must be new to tournaments. I’m Sadie, by the way. Sadie Kaiba.”
“Kaiba, as in Seto Kaiba?” Alita questioned with wide eyes. Sadie nodded.
“Yep, the one and only, he’s my older brother.” Sadie responded.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Sadie. I’m Alita. Alita Nakamura.” Alita’s introduction made Sadie freeze up.
“Hold on… Nakamura? As in Sophie Nakamura?” Sadie looked at Alita.
“To quote a certain someone, the one and only. She’s my older sister.” Alita answered. Sadie laughed.
“Looks like we’ve got more in common than we think.” Sadie replied. A giggle left Alita before she noticed a blond woman walking up to the two boys from earlier. Alita straightened, watching her.
“I don’t know about you, but I’m not liking the look in that one’s eye, she looks like trouble.” Alita told her new friend. Sadie turned her blue eyes to see who the other teen was talking about, only for a cold look to cross her face. “Uh, Sadie?”
“That’s because she is trouble. That’s Mai Valentine, you could say we have a rather unfriendly rivalry.” Sadie told her, her eyes closing shortly before her nose crinkled. "Ugh, and by the smell of things, she put on way too much perfume."
“Well, what do we have here?” Mai asked, the boys turning their heads to see where the voice was coming from. Mai stood around what Alita guessed to be 5 foot 9, fair skin, amethyst purple eyes and long, thick, blonde spiky hair. She wore a short-sleeved purple coat over a white tube top that exposed her midriff, a dark purple mini-skirt, black socks and purple high-heeled boots. Alita couldn’t help but notice the deck holder strapped to her thigh, which Alita assumed held the woman’s deck since the skirt didn’t appear to have pockets… Joey blushed bright red like an idiot.
“Wow…”
“So, you’re the Yugi kid everybody’s talking about, huh?” Mai asked, her tone as sweet as honey, but the fakeness of it ticked off both of the teenage girls watching her.
“Whoa, check it out!” Joey shouted, causing the teen girls to sweatdrop. What a moron, she’s not even paying attention to him and he’s too enamoured with her to notice.
“But, I’m amazed that a squirt like you could beat Kaiba. You’re famous, you know.” Mai finished, her sentence coming off as a backhanded compliment. But, due to the poor boy’s blush, it didn’t seem like the off handed remark went right over his head.
“Thanks very much, I think.” Yugi was able to stutter out.
“Hey, miss, I’m a very good friend of the famous Yugi, the master duelist. In fact…”
“Look,” Mai’s sweet tone dropped to a fierce one, causing the blond boy to sweat drop once he noticed that he was being completely ignored. “You’re either a champ or a chump. Cut this guy loose. He’s fashion-challenged, and deserves to be crushed in the games.” It was then that the girls decided to intervene.
“That’s rich coming from you, considering the fact that you couldn’t even beat a 12 year old when you were twenty and have been losing to the same girl for the past 4 years ever since.” Sadie quipped, popping her hip and crossing her arms over her chest. The smug smile on Mai’s face instantly dropped.
“Speaking of Kaiba… Sadie, how was your stint in America? Business going well?” Mai asked, the fake sweet tone returning, Sadie smirking at the chance given to her.
“Thriving as always, and as for the trip, it was invigorating. But, as exciting as winning an overseas tournament is, it’s better to win on home turf, don’t you think? Oh, wait, you wouldn’t know what that’s like. You haven’t won a single tournament back home for 4 years.” Sadie answered, making Alita turn her head to hide a snicker.
“Things could be different this time around, you little twerp!” Mai’s fierce tone was back.
“Right, as if Pegasus’ Island is going to be where you finally beat me. Just let me know when you’re up for a duel, I could use the practice.” Sadie fired back, a tick mark appearing on Mai’s head before she stormed off. Alita erupted into giggles, her face red from having to hold back her laughter while Mai was within ear shot. Sadie turned to the boys as Alita was trying to recover from her giggle fit. "Sorry about that." She rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly. "Mai tends to get on my nerves when she's around. Anyways, allow me to formerly introduce myself. I'm Sadie Kaiba." Sadie offered a hand out as Alita finally quit her giggling, noticing that Joey's blush had grown even darker at the sight of Sadie.
"Kaiba as in Seto Kaiba?" Yugi questioned, Sadie nodding in response.
"Yeah, he's my older brother... I promise, I'm not as cold as him." Sadie answered, laughing a bit nervously before Yugi shook her hand.
"Well, since Kaiba's your brother, you already know me." Yugi turned to Joey. "This is one of my friends, Joey Wheeler. He's here to duel too." Yugi introduced. Sadie smiled at Joey.
"It's nice to meet you, Joey." Sadie told the blond. Joey shook her hand, growing redder just by touching her.
"Nice to meet ya too, Sadie." Joey managed to get out before noticing Alita, who had finally stopped her giggle fit and was realizing that the two boys' attention was on her now. "Who's dat behind ya?" Joey asked, his blush gone. It was Alita's turn to blush bright red, trying to hide behind Sadie out of shyness, but the blue eyes girl wouldn't let her.
"This is my friend, Alita Nakamura." Sadie introduced.
"Nice to meet ya, Alita." Joey greeted, failing to notice that Yugi had turned red at the sight of the other girl.
"Nice to meet you too." Alita murmured shyly, her blush growing darker when she locked eyes with Yugi. Both looked at each other for a minute before blushing darker and looking away. In Alita's Millennium Item, Atlanna watched in amusement at the exchange, having to hide her own giggles. Alita was far from the most social person, and the poor girl had no experience with boys, let alone one she liked. But, as the group talked more, Atlanna smiled as she noticed Alita starting to relax. While Alita was shy most of the time, bringing up a subject such as Duel Monsters allowed her to open up. However, Atlanna's attention was drawn away from her host when a sudden feeling overcame her. She straightened. This feeling... I sense an ancient and powerful presence, but why does it feel so familiar? It feels like... Like home.... A home I haven't known for several Millenia, and yet, I can't seem to forget... Atlanna thought, suddenly noticing the pendant around Yugi's neck. Is that one of the Millennium Items Pegasus was talking about? Is that the source of this feeling? Atlanna examined the boy, watching his movements as he talked with Alita. In fact, this boy looks similar to someone I once knew... But who? With this thought, Atlanna's mind was made, and she closed her eyes.
When she opened them again, she found that she had successfully transported herself into the pendant. Looking around, she found herself in an area similar to that of the one inside the Millennium Bracelet. There were two doors before her, one of which was open. She peeked inside the door on the left to find an arrangement of different toys and games, but the door to her right... It was closed, looking like it was made of metal and had an Eye of Horus symbol on it. The closer she got to this door, the stronger the presence became. Just as she reached out to open the door, however...
"You may enter my chambers if you wish, but be warned, there will be many traps that await you. I will allow no harm to come to the boy whose vessel I share." Atlanna spun around to face a male. He looked similar to Yugi, although his violet eyes were more narrow, holding a more determined look. He also looked to be taller than Yugi, only a couple inches taller than her, and there were three gold hairs that stood up. This male, Atlanna realized, was the source of the presence she had felt. "Your presence intrigues me. I feel as if I've known you for centuries, and yet, I have no memory of you. Who are you, and why have you trespassed here?" He asked.
"I was actually about to say the same thing... As for who I am, I am known only by the name given to me by my Hikari. I am Atlanna, the spirit of the Millennium Bracelet. I apologize for intruding, but I sensed a powerful presence and came only to investigate, the source of which would seem to be you." Atlanna answered. The male before her gave a light chuckle.
"Well, it would seem that your curiosity just might be the end of you one day. But, that day will by no means be today. I, myself, have been known by many names through the ages, but call me Yami." He introduced himself. "I'm pleased to make your acquaintance."
"The pleasure is all mine." Atlanna smiled, gaining a smile back. Just as the two spirits were striking up a conversation, a different conversation was igniting outside of the Millennium Puzzle.
"Hey, aren't you that kid, Yugi?" A nasally voice asked from behind Yugi and Alita as Joey got in trouble with the security again.
"Yeah, and you're..."
"Weevil and Rex, the Dino Duelist." Joey finished. Rex chuckled a bit.
"You're wasting your time with those guys. The private rooms only go to finalists from the last championship, like us." Rex informed them, as Yugi approached Weevil.
"Congratulations on winning the Regionals, Weevil."
"It was nothing."
"Yeah, I went easy on him that time."
"Yeah? Well, this time, Yugi and I are gonna take the tournament. Right, Yugi?" Joey exclaimed as he got free of the guards. Alita tensed up with his words. Not the smartest thing to say when faced with two duelists who have a big chance of kicking you out of the tournament... She thought.
"To tell you the truth, winning the last championship didn't feel like that much of an achievement. I guess I can't really call myself the champion until I defeat the duelist who beat Kaiba..." His beady eyes remained on Yugi. "But, I'm sure I'll end up battling you in the big tournament, Yugi. Frankly, I look forward to it." Weevil's voice held a sinister tone, a tone that made Alita uneasy.
"I look forward to it, too." Yugi replied sincerely, missing the malice in the other boy's voice.
"I'm looking forward to some Dino Demolition." Rex added with a small smirk, eyeing Alita. Alita stepped behind Yugi a bit, not liking the look on his face.
"Let me tell you a little secret. It's something none of the other players know about the games yet." Weevil offered.
"Isn't that cheating, though?" Alita poked her head out from behind Yugi.
"The other duelists will find out soon enough, but there are new rules on the island that require more strategy." Weevil told them.
"Ah, rules are for wimps. In dueling, you either smash your opponent or get smashed yourself. It's one or the other." Rex continued.
"Strength is good, but you also need to combine them with other types of cards." Joey argued. Joey's comment made Alita smile... That is, until Rex butted in.
"Who asked you? Stay out of my way or I'll stomp you like everyone else." Rex commented before walking away.
"We'll see who stomps who when we get to the island." Joey growled.
"Just ignore him." Sadie advised, her words somehow claiming the blond down.
"Let's scope out the competition, shall we?" Weevil added.
"What'd you mean?" Alita asked. Sadie nodded toward the other duelists.
"Check it out. The other duelists are already trading over there. Players here are already swapping cards and strengthening their decks, getting ready for the big tournament. It's also a good chance to get a feel for your opponent's cards." Sadie pointed out.
"Whoa, strong cards! Hey, wanna trade? How bout you? Anybody? Help me out here!" Joey jumped right into the trading, making Sadie and Alita giggle.
"Guess Joey's trading..." Yugi trailed off.
"If you've come all this way and you're still trying to improve your deck, you've gotta be pretty desperate." Weevil mocked. Sadie whipped her head to glare at Weevil.
"I've done that a couple times and it's helped my deck out a ton. Desperation has nothing to do with it." Sadie told him, but found herself ignored.
"I'll catch you on the flip side." Weevil said to Yugi and Alita before walking away. Alita hugged herself as the duo walked outside.
"I've got a bad feeling about him..." Alita trailed off after a minute.
"I'm sure it'll be okay. Are you gonna trade too?" Yugi asked. Alita shook her head.
"No... To be honest, I'm a little attached to this deck." Alita brought out her deck, holding it in her hand. "It's one of the few mementos I have to remind me of my Mom... She built this deck for me when I was a kid and taught me everything I know about Duel Monsters." Yugi smiled.
"I get that, it's the same with my cards, though it was my Grandpa who taught me about Duel Monsters and built my deck." Yugi replied as he brought out his. Alita smiled. "If you want, you can take a look at it. I don't mind, but just be careful."
"You can take a look at mine, too." Alita replied with a nod, and the two switched decks, looking through the cards. Alita was amazed at the deck that had been built by Yugi's grandfather, handling each card with care the way she did with her own deck. "This deck's amazing, Yugi. It's almost as if I can feel your Grandpa's heart in these cards." Alita spoke up as she finished looking through the deck, bringing a blush to Yugi's face.
"I was actually thinking the same about yours, Alita. I can feel your mother's heart in this deck, and just looking through it makes me understand your want to hold onto your cards." Yugi responded as the two exchanged decks once more, putting their respective decks away.
"There was something I noticed about that deck actually... You could feel his heart, but something... I don't know, felt... Off."
"You're wondering if he's still around?" Yugi asked, finishing Alita's question.
"I don't mean to intrude..."
"No, Alita, it's okay. Honestly, he still is around... In a way." Yugi sighed, leaning against the railing of the boat. The only reason I was invited to this tournament is because Pegasus took my Grandfather's soul after a duel with him." Alita softly gasped. Just like he did with Bethany...
"Yugi, I... I'm so sorry..."
"Don't be, it's not your fault." Yugi gave her a soft smile.
"To be honest, we're in same boat... And not just literally either." Alita leaned against the railing.
"What'd you mean?" Yugi asked.
"Pegasus dueled me too, but, it wasn't a guardian he took from me... It was my niece, Bethany." Not noticing the shocked look on Yugi's face, Alita continued as she looked up at the stars. "My sister was 15. The guy she was with, Bethany's father, he hurt my sister. She often came home with bruises or a black eye, and sometimes didn't come home at all. I remember, she called my Mom crying. Mom left the house in a hurry, and when she came back, she was carrying Sophie. Sophie looked worse for wear, and my Mom told me that Sophie was pregnant. A scare with Bethany's birth and two years later, she was a ball of sunshine... Until Pegasus took her." Alita bowed her head, her fists clenching. "I'd give anything to get her back safe." She felt a hand on her own and looked up to see Yugi, smiling softly at her.
"It'll be okay, Alita. Joey and I'll help you get her back, along with my grandpa." Yugi promised.
"You mean it?" Alita asked, only for Yugi to nod in response. A smile crossed Alita's face. "And I'll help you get your grandpa back, no matter what." Yugi smiled in reply.
"Hey, Yugi, I got some good trading in!" Joey's shout caused the two to pull apart and face Joey and Sadie.
"Hey, let me see 'em." Yugi told Joey before Alita and Yugi examined Joey's new cards together. "Salamandra and a Kunai with Chain, Baby Dragon and Shield and Sword? Great!"
"With these new magic cards, combined with your monsters, you'll have a real strong deck." Alita finished.
"All right! So now, I'm ready to win every duel I play." Joey exclaimed, making Sadie laugh.
"Hold on there, tough guy, don't get ahead of yourself." Sadie told him.
"I think you're going to find it's a bit harder than that, Joey." Alita told him as Yugi opened the gold box that had held his deck.
"Here, add this to your deck. It can be helpful in a tight spot." Yugi held out a card to Joey.
"That's the Time Wizard!" Alita exclaimed.
"Thanks, I'll take it. I can't get over how you're always helping me out." Joey told Yugi as he put the card with his deck.
"Ah, we meet again." The girls deadpanned at the voice behind them and turned to face Weevil again.
"Oh, Weevil..." Yugi trailed off, watching as Weevil crossed the deck and leaned against the railing.
"The evening winds sure feel nice." Weevil commented. "So, did you trade for any good cards, Yugi?"
"No, I'm gonna duel with the cards I brought along with me."
"I figured as much. You used the Exodia cards in your Duel with Kaiba, right? Those are the strongest cards of them all." Alita went rigid with Weevil's words. He's planning something...
"Yep, and really rare." Yugi added.
"Could I possibly see those legendary cards?" Weevil asked.
"I don't see why not, just be careful with them, okay?" Yugi answered.
"Yugi... I don't think it's a good idea." Alita spoke up, trying to warn Yugi.
"It'll be okay, Alita." Yugi reassured her, but it did nothing for her nerves. Yugi took out the Exodia cards and gave them to Yugi. "Here."
"So, these are the card to summon Exodia." Weevil mused as he looked at the five cards of Exodia in his hands. "For a long time, I've been trying to come up with some kind of strategy to finally beat these cards, but I couldn't come up with anything..."
"Weevil, just give them back." Alita told him, her anxiety growing. Weevil smirked at her, and in that moment, Alita knew her suspicions were about to be confirmed.
"That is, I couldn't come up with anything until just this moment." Much to Alita's horror, Weevil tossed the cards overboard. "Say goodbye to Exodia!"
"No!" Alita shouted as she tried to grab them, but her hands missed the cards as they fell into the water below.
"No!" Yugi exclaimed. Weevil laughed.
"Now there's no one who can challenge me!" Weevil cackled as he walked away.
"You bug eyed creep!" Sadie shouted. "Wait till I get to sick my dragons on you, you're gonna pay for this!"
"My cards! Those were the Exodia cards my grandpa gave me!" Yugi exclaimed.
"I'll get 'em!" Joey exclaimed, running and jumping over the railing into the water below.
"Joey, don't!" Yugi and Alita exclaimed at the same time.
"Joey, where are you?!" Yugi yelled. Joey gasped for air as his head broke the surface.
"I promise you, I'll get them, Yugi!" Joey yelled back.
"Are you crazy?!" Sadie screeched.
"Joey, they're not worth drowning over!" Yugi exclaimed.
"Don't worry, Yugi!" Joey saw one of the cards and grabbed it as it floated past. "Look, see, I got one of them!"
"Joey, swim back to the ship!" Alita screamed at the blond.
"No way! At least, this time, there's something I can do to help someone I care about!" Joey screamed right back before his head went under water for a minute before the teen broke the surface again. "Current sure is strong, though, it's hard to fight. But, if I punk out now, who's gonna help my sister, Serenity?"
"Your sister?" Alita asked.
"Just 3 more now." Joey smiled as he got another one, but as he turned, a wave came up and dragged him underwater again.
"Joey!" Sadie, Alita and Yugi exclaimed at the same time before Alita dive over the railing too. The cold water almost froze her body, but she pushed through it, swimming toward Joey, who was struggling to stay afloat.
"Joey, hang on!" Alita exclaimed as she swam toward him.
"Alita, just three more, help me find them." Joey told her before sinking.
"Joey!" Alita exclaimed as she dove under to grab Joey and bring him back to the surface.
"Yugi!" Sadie exclaimed, Alita turning to see Yugi diving in too and swimming toward her and Joey.
"Yugi, what're you doing?!" Alita asked out of shock.
"Helping you get my friend back on board!" Yugi answered her.
"Are you guys okay?!" A different male voice shouted before a ladder descended from the deck, Sadie and two other teenagers peering over the side at them.
"Grab ahold!" The girl on Sadie's other side called to them.
"Hurry!" The boy on Sadie's left added.
"Téa, Tristan!" Yugi exclaimed as the two swam to the ladder and grabbed hold with one hand, hanging onto Joey with the other. As they were pulled into the deck of the boat again, Yugi looked at Alita. "Are you okay?" He asked. Alita shot him a small smile.
"I'm fine, it's Joey I'm worried about." Alita answered him.
"That was close! I'm sure glad you guys showed up, really glad!" Yugi exclaimed after they reached the deck of the ship.
"We're a team." Téa replied. "We all stick together."
"We'll always watch your back." Tristan added.
"Thanks a lot, you guys." Yugi replied before introducing his other friends to Sadie and Alita. Once the introductions were made, Joey's voice broke the silence.
"I'm sorry, Yugi... I failed, I only found two of your cards."
"It's okay, Joey."
"It's not okay, it's always this way with me. I'm never able to help anybody, not even my own sister, Serenity."
"Serenity?" Yugi asked.
"Really? You have a sister, Joey?" Sadie questioned, kneeling next to him.
"Our parents' divorced years ago, when we were kids. She lives far away with my mother. My sister's had really bad eyes since she was born. Eventually, she'll go blind."
"I'm sorry."
"Thanks, Yuge... She sent me a message..." Joey then told the group about the message from Serenity. "The doctors told her that the time has come. Soon, her eyes'll be impossible to repair, even with surgery. But, there are specialists who could perform an operation now before it's too late. They could save her eyesight, but there's no way I can pay for the operation. I have to win, for her! Winning in the Duelist Kingdom and getting the prize money is the only way I can help Serenity!" Joey finished. He's so much like Seto... Sadie thought, reminded of how her own older brother would have done anything to keep her and Mokuba safe. As the sun began to rise, the group stood on the bow of the ship, watching as the sky lit up with the sun's first rays.
"We'll all do our best, Joey." Alita told him, Yugi nodding in agreement.
"You for your sister, Alita for her niece, and me for my grandpa." Yugi finished.
"That's right, we'll do this together." Téa replied.
"Look! The island!" Tristan pointed out the island getting closer to the ship.
"That's the Duelist Kingdom!" Yugi exclaimed. Alita nodded.
"That's it, we're almost there." Alita continued. As the ship approached the island, Alita felt a hand take hers. She looked up to see Yugi smiling at her, a silent promise in his face.
Whatever they would face on that Island, they'd face it together....

Kiss Me In The Pouring Rain: An Uncharted Waters one-shot
Written for Yu-Gi-Oh United's Kisstober Event.
Prompt: Week 2 (9th - 15th): Hot or Cold? Sun / Rain / Snow
Autumn has come to Domino, the chill ushering in beautiful scenery and cold rainstorms.
There was a nip in the air, and leaves were beginning to change from green to yellow and red, and excitement began to buzz in the air at the upcoming holidays.
Reika too could feel the excitement as she stepped out of the game shop and felt the breeze blow through her hair, taking a deep breath and filling her lungs with the chilly air and smiling. This time of year had always been her favorite, where she could curl up with a book while wearing a cozy sweater, or drinking a hot beverage and feeling the warmth flood her chilled bones.
“You’re certainly in a good mood,” Seto grumbled as she hopped in the passenger’s seat of his car after tossing her duffel bag in the back. “Did something happen?”
“Nothing at all. Am I not allowed to enjoy this cool weather after the heatwave we’ve had?” she questioned with a brow.
He said nothing, but his face was curled down into a frown as they pulled into the busy downtown traffic. With her car in the shop, taking the train was normally the fastest way to get over to Seto’s area of the city, but for some reason, he’d been insisting on picking her up on his own lately. Not that she cared, being able to spend time with him alone was always welcome when he had two younger brothers still living at home.
“There’s going to be a gala on Saturday, at the mansion,” Seto said, breaking the silence that had fallen over the car. “A fundraiser for the orphanage.”
Ah, there it was. Now she understood his sour disposition, and with it being early October, his birth month, he must have had a lot on his mind. Not that she would ever get the full story from him.
“So then am I to assume Roland will be dragged out shopping with me for a dress?”
“Unless your mother is free to take you, yes, that is a safe assumption.”
To save what little sanity Roland must have had left, Reika sent a quick text to her mother asking to go shopping. It had been a while since they’d been able to have a mother-daughter day out anyway.
She glanced out at the window at the country road leading to the manor, the tops of the trees red with changing leaves. “I’ve always loved how this area looks this time of year. Like something out of a nature book…” she hummed.
“It’s the circle of life,” Seto deadpanned, eyes not leaving the road as they pulled into the winding driveway, already full of vans from caterers, decorators, and sound technicians. Anyone that had looked like they were taking a break immediately jumped to their feet and rushed into vans, pulling out tables and equipment as Seto parked his car.
When she stepped out, she gave everyone a kind smile as they bowed before Seto, his hand holding hers and guiding her through the chaos into the manor.
Inside, the decorators had transformed the first floor into a wonderland of autumn, with warm lighting strung up above her head and along the banisters of the grand staircase, covered with fake leaves to hide the wiring. On the doors to the ballroom hung two giant autumn-colored leaves, a greeting to those who would be entering.
“Mr. Kaiba, what do you think so far? We’ve done it to your specifications,” the head decorator said, her eyes twitching with restrained nerves.
“It’s fine,” Seto humphed, turning in the direction of his downstairs office.
“It’s beautiful,” Reika added quickly. “As always, you’ve done a wonderful job. I’m sure the guests will love it.”
“Thank you, Reika. You’re always so helpful.” The decorator left something unsaid that Reika chose to politely ignore. “Alright you four! We’re heading inside to decorate!” The order was barked in the direction of four very nervous people, all of whom looked like they’d only just graduated from high school, and they jumped to attention, rushing inside behind their boss.
Reika could only shake her head. Sometimes, the world could be so blind as to how much they acted just like the very man they feared.
-----
Seto Kaiba was a master of many things. He could create things others could only dream of, he could do things people would never dare, and he was bringing Domino - if not the world -  into a new technological renaissance.
One thing Seto Kaiba could not do, however, was control the weather.
The night had started smoothly, the richest people from all over Japan who liked to pretend to care about philanthropy had gathered at Kaiba Manor for dancing, drinks, appetizers, and the chance to flaunt the ridiculous amounts of they they had by outbidding each other in the silent auction that had been set up outside on the lavish outdoor patio.
Clouds had begun to move in as the night wore on, but no one thought anything of it until the first few drops hit and the ultra-wealthy began to flee indoors in a panic, as if they might melt if they dared to get their outfits wet.
Reika, meanwhile, rushed to help the Kaiba employees who had been left to cover the silent auction tables before everything got ruined, dragging them under tarps or over to the covered veranda.
The small adrenaline spike had her laughing and tilting her head back to let the rain land on her face. It would melt her perfectly-done makeup and frizz her perfectly-set hair, but she didn’t mind in the slightest.
“Reika!” she heard Seto call, safe and covered. “Come inside!”
She moved to just beyond the safety of the veranda’s roof before the sound of the small orchestra met her ears. “Come dance with me.”
“Absolutely not. We still have to announce the auction winners. We don’t have time for - ”
“Then kiss me.”
“You are going to be the death of me,” Seto groaned, but he did as she requested, leaning halfway into the rain and pressing his lips against hers, making her head spin, and, when she was distracted, lifting her off the ground and pulling her so she was out of the rain.
She huffed as she pulled away, cheeks pink.
“Satisfied?” he questioned with a smirk, lips dotted with her smeared red lipstick.
“Hmm. For now,” she replied, mirroring his smirk and following him back inside the manor, away from the cold, October rain.
In the early morning hours after the gala had ended and the staff dismissed for the evening, she and Seto lay together in Seto’s massive bed. Her head was against his chest, the room mostly quiet minus the grumble from him about how the gala and auction had gone, with the occasional hums of agreement from her.
The rain, now a thunderstorm, pounded against the windows, and lightning lit up the skies, and when the room lit up, she leaned up for a sleepy kiss from the grumpy CEO beneath her.
As his arms encircled her, she closed her eyes, allowing the feeling of warmth and safety to wash over her.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Rebirthing

Chapter 4- Into the Hornet's Nest, Yugi vs Weevil Part 1:
"Man, this Duelist Kingdom looks like a pretty big place, Yugi. Finding your Grandpa and Ali's niece isn't gonna be easy." Joey commented as the ship docked, the group examining the island before them.
"Well, we gotta start somewhere." Yugi replied as the ship dropped it's anchor. Once landed, the group saw the men waiting to greet them.
"Whoa, check out the suits." Joey pointed out.
"Attention, all duelists: Please disembark in an orderly fashion." Kemo ordered.
"Hey, Téa, what if one of those Security Guys finds out we're both stowaways? We oughta just play it safe and swim back."
"We're in the middle of nowhere, Lamebrain! If you can just try and act normal, we'll be okay." Tea replied.
"Yeah, seriously, no sweat." Sadie added before the group disembarked with the rest of the duelists. But, while the rest of the duelists were relaxed, Tristan on the other hand was stiff as a board, which did nothing to hide him from the guards' attention.
"Hey, you!" Tristan, Yugi, Sadie, Téa, Alita and Joey all froze at the guard's call, waiting in fear of his next words.
"Don't look so nervous, you guys are our guests here." Another guard finished, his tone reassuring.
"That's right!" Tristan turned to face the guard. "I'm your guest." He bowed before running to join his friends. A few minutes later, Tristan was panting, his hand over his heart. "I think I just had a heart attack." Alita facepalmed.
"Way to play it cool, Tristan." Alita, Sadie and Téa replied sarcastically.
"That wasn't suspicious at all..." Sadie quipped.
"All right! Every single one of us made it here safe and-" But, whatever Joey was gonna say next was interrupted by a sneeze, which Téa and Alita barely dodged.
"Ew!"
"Cover your mouth, would ya?!" Alita exclaimed the same time Téa expressed her disgust. Joey sniffled.
"You never would have caught that cold if it wasn't for Weevil." Yugi pointed out.
"Speaking of our wormy friend, looks like he just slithered his way off the boat and is already looking to start some trouble." Sadie added.
"That slimeball... I'd love to wipe that smirk off his face." Joey growled. Same here, but we don't have time for that now... Alita thought, not knowing that Yugi was thinking the same thing.
"Welcome, all duelists. Please, follow the stairs to meet your host." Kemo announced.
"That castle's gotta belong to Pegasus." Yugi and Alita observed at the same time.
"Then what're we waiting for?" Joey asked before the group started climbing the stairs. Suddenly, Téa stopped.
"Huh? What's that?" She asked, the others stopping and looking where she was.
"What'd you see, Téa?" Alita asked.
"It looked like... Bakura." She answered.
"Bakura from school?" Yugi questioned. As the group looked, Bakura had disappeared.
"Again with this Bakura stuff?" Tristan mumbled.
"Where is he, Téa?"
"That's twice I've seen him now, but he's not there anymore. Maybe it's all in my head..." Téa mused.
"Well, if he is here, he's probably trying to stay out of sight of the security around here." Alita reasoned.
"Come on, we're on a rescue mission, remember?" Tristan got everyone back on track as they started climbing the stairs again. As they reached the top, the group of six joined the crowd awaiting Pegasus' arrival.
"Whoa, look, that's Weevil Underwood! He's the regional champion."
"And that's the runner-up, Rex Raptor."
"And there's Mako Tsunami, he was ranked third."
"Wow, these are all the best Duelists in the world, but where's the World Champion, Kaiba?"
"Didn't you hear? Some kid beat him, on his own turf, too."
"Are you serious? I thought Kaiba was the best."
"He was, but not anymore. Yugi's supposed to be the kid to beat now." With this statement from one of the other duelists, the four gave Yugi a smile.
"If we don't get knocked out by Sadie Kaiba first... She's joining this time around too." Alita gave Sadie a little nudge, the girls giggling before Kemo called the crowd to order once again.
"Attention, please gather around! Your benevolent host is anxious to greet you all." Kemo shouted, a beat of silence following before Pegasus appeared on the balcony.
"Boy, would I like to get just 5 minutes alone with that guy..." Joey trailed off.
"Cool it." Sadie warned him. Alita glared, remembering what had happened the last she had seen Pegasus...
"Next time we duel, Alita-Girl, we shall play for far higher stakes. I've found that, given the proper incentive, anyone can be made to play my game." Pegasus had sneered before taking Bethany's soul.
"Auntie!" Bethany's little voice echoed in her head.
"Bethany!"
Alita grit her teeth and clenched her fists. I'm not leaving this island until I save my niece, no matter what Pegasus has planned for us. She thought.
"Greetings, Duelists, I am Maximillion Pegasus! It is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you all to the Duelist Kingdom. You stand before me, the World's Greatest Duelists! But, come tournament's end, only one shall be crowned King of Games! I implore you all to assemble your dueling decks with care, with creativity, and with cunning, for this competition will test your skills like never before! To track your progress in the tournament, you've each been given a dueling glove. You've also been given 2 precious star chips, you must wager these star chips on each duel you compete in. To advance to the final level of competition for the chance at the 3 million dollar prize, you must win 10 star chips! 10 star chips will admit you into my castle, where you'll face me in one final duel!" If Bethany and Yugi's grandpa are here, I'd bet everything they're hidden in that castle, but Yugi and I'll never be able to get in there with all the guards around... We're just gonna have to win enough star chips to get inside. Alita thought as she pulled her dueling glove on her left hand and set the star chips in place before glancing at her friends. "This will be a tournament unlike anything you've ever experienced. State-of-the-art dueling arenas are covering this entire Island, and intriguing new dueling rules will be in effect. I could tell you what these new rules are, but what fun would that be? You'll discover them as you compete, or you won't last very long. Remember, play boldly, think strategically, and duel mercilessly. You'll have one full hour to prepare, both your cards and yourselves. When the skies light up with fireworks, the duels will begin!" The crowd, all but the group of six, cheered as Pegasus retreated back into his castle. I gotta win my way into that castle... I just gotta! Alita thought. A little while later, when the group was alone in a meadow, Joey spoke up.
"Yugi, I don't know if I can win this thing. Maybe it'd be best for you take your star chip back."
"Nah, you keep it. Your little sister's counting on you to win the tournament's prize money for her."
"Thanks, man."
"You can do it." Sadie encouraged.
"You just gotta steer clear of the more experienced duelists at first." Tea added.
"Yeah, it's a matter of working your way up." Tristan finished.
"Thanks, you guys." Joey turned to Yugi. "Well, Yugi, between your Grandpa, Alita's niece and my sister, neither of us have any room for mistakes."
"You can say that again." Alita agreed.
"Right." Yugi expressed his own agreement. Just then, fireworks exploded, showing off many colors in the sky.
"The fireworks! It's starting!" Téa pointed out.
"All right, go time, guys!" Alita exclaimed.
"Let's do it!" Yugi agreed. A few minutes later, the group was walking to find their first opponents.
"So, what's your play, Yugi?" Joey asked, once again the first to speak up.
"Well, I might as well stick with Weevil. After all, we do have a score to settle." Yugi answered.
"I was hoping you'd say that!" Joey grinned.
"Hang on, isn't that him?" Téa asked, pointing out the bug wielder out. Across from them, standing at the entrance to a forest, was the Bug Brawler himself.
"Weevil.... Weevil, I challenge you to a duel!" Yugi called to him. Weevil seemed to smirk in response before taking off running into the forest as he laughed.
"Hey, wait!" Tristan called after him.
"I can't believe it! Weevil's running away!" Joey exclaimed as the group chased after him.
"I don't think that's it! It's possible he's leading us somewhere! I think it has something to do with the new rules Pegasus was talking about earlier!" Alita pointed out as she ran with the group. As they ran after Weevil, a flock of moths flew over their heads.
"Where'd all these moths coming from?!" Tristan asked.
"Ugh, they're disgusting!" Téa added.
"He's fast for a small guy!"
"Maybe you're slow for a big guy!"
"We're never gonna catch him! As long as this entire island's inbounds, he'll keep running all day!"
"I don't think so! I think Alita's right, he might be trying to lead us somewhere!" Yugi called from the front of the group. When the group reached a clearing deep in the forest, they saw Weevil waiting for them.
"There he is!" Joey pointed out.
" Welcome, said the spider to the fly. You flew right into my trap... Again!"
"It's time you answer for what you did on the boat, Weevil!" Alita shouted, her fists clenching. Yugi stepped up to stand beside Alita, but she noticed something was different about the Yugi next to her. He was taller, even looking taller than Atlanna. His eyes were more narrow, holding an intense and determined gaze, and three of his gold fringe were standing up. 'Atlanna, that's not Yugi, is it? Who is he?'
'He said his name was Yami... I met him last night.'
'So, that's why you were gone? I wondered where you'd wandered off to...' Atlanna said nothing in response, but Alita knew she was probably rubbing the back of her neck, feeling sheepish.
"All right, Weevil. Time to find out if you're as good at dueling as you are at running away." His voice was also deeper than Yugi's tenor voice.
"Was I simply running away or cleverly weaving you into my web?"
"It's time to duel!" Yami cried. Weevil merely laughed in response.
"As you wish!" He shouted as the ground below them began to rumble.
"It's an earthquake!" Joey yelped.
"I don't think that's it!" Sadie exclaimed. Weevil only laughed at the group's confusion.
"What have you done?!" Yami asked. As the group watched, the ground opened up.
"Whoa, the entire ground is transforming!" Tristan exclaimed. Before anything more could be said, a dueling arena was raised from inside the ground, one side blue and the other side red.
"It's one of the dueling arenas Pegasus mentioned." Sadie explained, remembering how the partnership between Pegasus and her brother had allowed for this to happen.
"It's gigantic!" Téa observed in shock.
"Man, these duels aren't gonna be like the ones back home!" Joey stated.
"You've just stepped into a hornet's nest, and there's no way out!"
"What is that?" Yami murmured.
"These giant areas must be set up all over the island!" Weren't you listening when Pegasus explained the dueling process? Sadie and Alita both thought.
"I'll just meet you on the field." Weevil told Yami before running over to the red side and being elevated up to his part of the arena.
"I don't like this... Weevil's a little too cocky." Joey pointed out suspiciously. Yami stepped to follow Weevil, but found himself stopped by Alita taking his hand.
"Be careful up there." Alita warned. Yami gave her a small smile, gently squeezing her hand in reassurance.
"It'll be all right." He promised. Alita nodded and let go, watching as Yami went to the blue side and was elevated into place, his arms crossed over his chest.
"I noticed that you have just one star chip, Yugi. I guess that means I'll have the pleasure of eliminating you from the tournament! Once you're gone, everyone else's chips will be easy pickings!"
"Not if I take your 2 first!"
"What?"
"This is going to be an all or nothing match for the both of us!"
"Ha! Why should I risk both my star chips when you only have one?"
"Because I have something else you want... My whole Duel Monsters deck!"
"So, you'd risk your Grandpa's deck? Fine with me." Weevil laughed. "Winning all your cards will be an easy way to exterminate you once and for all!"
"Exterminate?!" Téa and Sadie gasped in shock.
"Swat that little twerp like a mosquito!" Joey cheered. A couple of other duelists soon joined the 5 on the sidelines.
"Whoa, sounds like a duel is about to start over there. That's Weevil Underwood, but who's the other guy?" Joey was the one to answer them.
"That guy is Yugi Moto, he beat Kaiba, and I happen to be his best friend Joey Wheeler. And these four? These four are trespassers."
"Hey!" Téa and Tristan exclaimed.
"Excuse you?!" Sadie and Alita demanded at the same time.
"I thought I wouldn't be seeing a Weevil/Yugi match-up till the finals."
"Weevil's the regional champ, no new kid's got a chance against him."
"Well, Yugi, my adoring public is waiting, so we should begin." Weevil pointed out.
"Duel!" The two shouted as the duel began, both boys being set up with 2000 Life Points each.
"Let's see how you like my Killer Needle!" Weevil made the first move.
"You'll have to get through my Mammoth Graveyard first!" Yami countered by playing Mammoth Graveyard. "This massive monster will match your annoying insect point for point! Attack!" With a trumpet, the Mammoth charged into battle with the giant wasp. But...
"Killer Needle, let's show this Mammoth your stinger. Attack!" Weevil's Killer Needle counter attacked, stinging the Mammoth as soon as it was close enough.
"No!" Yami shouted.
"Ha! Gone after one sting? He must be allergic!" Weevil taunted.
"Hang on, both Killer Needle and Mammoth Graveyard should have been destroyed, they both have the same attack points!" Alita called out. Weevil laughed.
"Have you finally figured out why I led Yugi all the way to this forest area? If you just look around, then you'll see that this area is an exact replica of our surrounding environment... One part Wasteland and one part forest, and who thrives in the forest? Bugs! The strongest, most powerful insects rule this forest! So, as long as I play my bugs in the forest area, I get a field power bonus. I guess you just weren't listening when Pegasus said that this tournament would have exciting new surprises in store for us. Maybe if you were smart enough to steal the Tournament's secret new rules like I did, you'd be getting a field power bonus instead of me!" While Weevil was laughing, Sadie nudged Alita and pointed to the Killer Needle. Alita smirked, seeing that the hologram for the monster was cracking.
"He cheated! He led us here 'cause he knew he'd have an unfair advantage." Joey realized.
"Go ahead! Call me a cheater! You're all just angry that you didn't swipe the rules yourselves, and because you didn't, Little Yugi is about to get stung!"
"Weevil, you might wanna keep that fly trap of yours shut! You're about to learn why cheaters never prosper!" Sadie yelled at him. Yugi laughed, seeing what Sadie and Alita were seeing.
"What? How can you be laughing?!" Weevil asked.
"You said the arena was one part forest and one part Wasteland right? You may rule the forest, but guess what? Mammoth Graveyard rules the wastelands!" Alita pointed out.
"W-w-what?!" Weevil watched in shock as Killer Needle shattered. "Oh no, my monster! What have you done with my monster?!"
"It's like the girls told you, my Mammoth Graveyard got a field power bonus from the Wasteland, just like your bug did from the forest." Yugi answered. Weevil growled.
"The field-point advantage was supposed to be mine alone!" Weevil snarled.
"Maybe if you'd gone to an arena with a forest area in it's entirety, you might have been right!" Alita told him.
"I kept wondering about something on the boat ride here, Weevil. Why were we traveling to some remote island just to duel? But, as soon as I saw this holographic display grid, it all came together. Every monster has a type of field that it does best on, kind of like a home field advantage, and what makes this island so special is that it contains every type of field imaginable! So, when you deliberately led us to this spot, you were clearly hoping some kind of field advantage. Weevil growled again before laughing.
"You're awfully clever to put it all together like that, Yugi, but figuring out one rule won't be enough. There are surprises hidden under every rock, and I know them all!" Weevil claimed.
"You can beat him, Yugi!" Téa cheered.
"Don't let that flea scare ya! He's bluffin'!" Joey added.
"Really? Let's just see how you handle this bluff." Weevil then summoned a giant beetle. "My Hercules Beetle will find a way to crawl under your skin!"
"1950 attack points? I know of a combination that would overpower it in a flash, but I'm not the one dueling right now." Alita mumbled, thinking about her Flame Champion.
"I play Feral Imp, then I'll add this Horn of the Unicorn so it's magic will raise my attack points!" The five of Yugi's friends watched as the Feral Imp's attack points rose to 2000 attack points with the help of the Horn of The Unicorn. Weevil only laughed.
"You'll have to do a lot better than that! Hercules Beetle, attack!"
"Feral Imp, Magic Lightning Attack!" But, much to everyone's surprise, Feral Imp was destroyed, but not Hercules Beetle.
"Yugi's attack didn't even faze that thing!" Téa exclaimed.
"Something's screwy!" Joey added.
"My Feral Imp's lightning attack should have destroyed your beetle! Is this another trick, Weevil?!"
"No, Yugi, I just thought you knew that all monsters with a field power bonus were also resistant to any type of magic attack, and since my Hercules Beetle easily deflected your lightning bolts he has more than enough power left to destroy your puny Feral Imp and continue to eat away at your Life Points." Just as Weevil pointed this out, Yami's Life Points dropped to 1350.
"Even that four eyed tick's weakest bugs are gonna be tough to beat so long as he's got that field power bonus."
"Yeah, but it's not exactly like it can just be turned off."
"That Weevil's a no good cheat!" Téa expressed.
"True, but there might still be a possibility..." Alita trailed off.
"It's your turn. Make your move!" Weevil taunted Yami. Yami set a monster in defense mode in reply. "So, defending now, are we? Very clever! Since I can't see your monster's defense points, I can't be sure that I can beat it. But even your strongest monster can't stand against my Basic Insect. Not only does he get a field power bonus, but I'm upgrading him with a level 3 laser cannon and a level 2 power boost! Now, Yugi, for all the innocent little bugs you've squashed, stomped, crushed or fumigated, it's payback time!" With one blast, Yugi's defense was destroyed. Weevil laughed. "You'll have to do better than that if you hope to survive my bug's laser powered arsenal."
"Then, I'll play this card." Yami placed another monster facedown on the field. Weevil laughed.
"I'm going to keep you on the defensive. Attack now with any monster, and you'll instantly activate this trap card." Weevil told him. Alita blinked. Wait, why would he tell Yami that? Alita thought.
"That's weird... Why would Weevil tell Yugi what he's placing on the field?" Sadie asked.
"That Weevil's got Yugi cornered!"
"Yeah, he can't even counterattack!"
"As long as my trap card remains in play, you're powerless to make a move against me! So, does my tightening web make you squirm?!" Weevil mocked. He's so busy bragging, he's not paying attention to his opponent's moves... Big mistake... Alita thought as Weevil kept running his mouth, the girl watching as Yami set a card in his Spell and Trap zone. "Face it, Yugi! I've got you pinned down, and while you're totally unable to attack me, I can attack you anytime I want! Each turn you cower, I create a new monster." It kept going like that, Yugi setting cards and Weevil summoning more and more monsters. "Keep drawing, Yugi, my army of bugs just keeps getting bigger. I'm going to wipe out all of your monsters in one bug blitzkrieg!"
"You know, you'd think after dueling for a while, he'd be smart enough to shut his mouth and pay attention to what Yugi's doing..." Sadie mumbled under her breath to Alita.
"It'll just be that much funnier when Yugi wipes that dumb smirk off his face." Alita murmured back, the girls covering up a laugh.
"Just look at our Yugi, he's so confident up there." Téa commented.
"I know! When he's duelin', it's like he's a totally different guy!" Joey added. Alita and Atlanna glanced at each other, deciding to keep quiet about their knowledge of Yami. Weevil cackled.
"Well, what do ya know? I'm down to my last monstrous insect, and you know what that means, Yugi? You're about to be exterminated!" Weevil shouted. Keep an eye on him... I have a feeling he was lying just now... Atlanna warned.
About him having put his last monster out? Yeah, I had a feeling... Alita replied, watching the duel as it continued to unfold. "We'll see what my cards have to say about that!" Yami shouted back as he drew another card. "All right, Weevil, I defend with the Dark Magician!"
"Excellent, I'll destroy your very favorite card first! Now, my pet, power up your laser cannon! Attack!" Weevil called. Yami laughed, Weevil suddenly gaining a scared look on his face. "Wh-why are you laughing?!"
"Weevil, you're not the only one who can set a Trap card."
"What?!"
"You were so busy grandstanding, you paid no attention to the cards I put into play!"
"But, I thought they were all monster c-c-cards?!"
"Not all. While you loaded the field with your bug monsters, I prepared a special surprise, the power of my Mirror Force trap card!"
"Hold your fire!"
"Too late, Weevil, you already ordered your attack on my Dark Magician and Mirror Force will deflect it right back at you!" Weevil watched in horror as all the monsters he had put out on the field were destroyed.
"My Life Points are devastated!" Weevil cried, his Life Points dropping to 555 left while Yugi's remained at 1350. Joey, Tristan, Téa, Sadie and Alita all cheered for their friend, but Atlanna silently watched, feeling like the Bug Brawler still had one last ace up his sleeve.
"You're a liar and a cheat, Weevil, but it was your overconfidence that allowed me to get the best of you. Your insects are decimated, your Life Points are low, and as you yourself said before, you have used up all your monsters." Much to everyone but Atlanna's shock, Weevil only chuckled.
"Actually, I lied about that, too!" When Yami looked shocked, Weevil continued. "I still have my most formidable creature waiting in the wings, and this unconquerable insect will swat you down once and for all!"
To be continued....
