If you are moving large Files (movies, zips, large games) you will get about 100-131 Megs/sec would is good for a portable hard drive. Like all Mechanical Hard drives this one suffers from the same limitations.

Please note that there are many Seagate 4TB models, and not everyone is a slim one (the box DOES NOT say it is slim, but it is if you have the Model STDR40000100. The 4TB has the same footprint as the 2TB, only a bit thicker. Now I can simply take the drive on a trip and boot up any iMAC. It is certainly not the fastest drive but good enough for my day-to-day archiving purpose as well as running it as a boot disk on USB (even USB 2.0 on a 2009 iMAC (whose internal HD died, and buried inside since I don't want to open the iMAC). For the bottom panel, if you look at the drive you’ll notice it “wraps around” the front a bit.
It was a non-issue for me, but it could have been due to my prying method.
When prying the bottom panel at the rear, ensure that the power and cable-SATA ports don’t catch on the enclosure.
The rear is really tight and it’s hard to get a tool in to pry.
I found it easiest to begin at the sides, then work my way to the rear.
I actually did try to save a few of the tabs. Of course, now that I can access the inside tabs, you’d think I would gently pry them open to save all those bottom tabs, right? The side-screws and grommets connected to the drive prevent it from coming out the top, as the case is molded so that they can only come out the bottom. This is the top which you do not have to remove. We will be comparing the Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive with the recently reviewed Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch and the LaCie Mobile Drive. To test the performance of the LaCie Mobile Drive, we used the BlackMagic disk speed test on a current generation MacBook Air as well as leverage a Lenovo ThinkStation 920 for Windows testing. The only other thing that would really be noteworthy here is that this model is slightly bigger than its predecessor, though, as you’d expect with portable drives, it’s still small enough to carry around. Flipping the drive over will show a label containing information such as regulatory compliances, part number, and capacity. On the front of the drive, you’ll find the Seagate branding, as well as an indicator light. This particular drive offers three different colors to choose from – black, silver, and light blue. Even still, Seagate does a great job in giving the Backup Plus Portable a modern look with its textured, polished aluminum finish. There’s generally not a whole lot to say when it comes to design for portable hard drives. A potential downside is that the latest edition is slightly larger than the previous. This alone is worth the slight increase in price from the 2016 edition. So what’s different? First off, the latest edition offers a 1-year Mylio Create plan in addition to a 2-month Adobe CC Photography membership, whereas the previous edition only offered the latter. Given that the latest edition is similar in many ways but has a few minor improvements (and offerings) in addition, we can expect the drive to be well-received by end users. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, as the 2016 version maintains a 4-star rating after 18,000+ reviews on Amazon. In fact, they even come available in the same colors, with the only difference being that the latest model comes in light blue instead of blue. Additionally, the drive provides automatic file synchronization, allowing you to effortlessly backup your files.įor those amongst us that are already using the preceding edition released back in 2016, you may be hard pressed to find any differences aside from the model number. It features USB 3.0 (also compatible with USB 2.0) connectivity and can be used with both Mac and Windows.
