the fact that hikaru often gets reduced in the fandom to nothing more than 'horse' jokes is something that's always stuck with me. it's a bit ironic, in a sad kind of way.

hikaru being 'the horse' isn't just some joke thrown in for laughs -- it's her coping mechanism; the way that she dehumanizes herself and creates a mental disconnect to separate herself from the things she does, and to place herself in the role of being a tool for yuna's use. hikaru may not necessarily want to kill people for promised blood's goals, but if yuna wants it, then the horse certainly does, can, and will.

it's not as great of a coping mechanism as she believes it to be -- it certainly does get her through the harder parts of life as a futatsugi magical girl, and it's become something of a personal playful nickname among the ranks of promised blood -- but it's textbook dehumanization. she's not thinking of herself as a human being, but instead as an animal, as a tool, a weapon. she cheerfully agrees when ao calls her an empty shell, grinning and chirping back that with yuna-san, she's full.

everything hikaru -- the horse -- does is for yuna. she's not her own person; she's not a person at all. yuna-san is promised blood's general, and a general needs her loyal horse. the horse won't need to feel guilty for the blood on her hands and at the tip of her saber at the end of the day. she was made to do this. she is not her own person; she's not a person at all.

all of this to say -- hikaru's character being turned into 'horse' jokes by a lot of the fandom is something i think about a normal amount.

in other news tomorrow is match #3 for me and I suicide ranked only my home program. So.

#the match system is so dystopian if you think about it for more than 1 second #you interview at programs all over the country. you make your list of where to go. they make their list. #then a giant algorithm sorts people into their highest ranked program that also wants them back #so if you’re bound to a certain geographic area #you better hope it’s an undesirable place to live a non-academic program or that you’re the most stellar applicant #for residency I desperately wanted to leave my home state and matched at my 2nd choice but interviewed at 12 programs #for fellowship number one I interviewed at 10 places and matched my first choice #now with fellowship number two I interviewed at 4 places and only ranked one #we call that suicide ranking because it’s an all your eggs in one basket situation #either you get it or you don’t have a job. #it’s not a big deal for me really because I would otherwise just enter the workforce #but it’s actually late to look for work starting next academic year #essentially if I don’t match it’s going to be a scramble to find something #yikes. I know it will be fine. I’m a good candidate. I’ve been at this institution for 5 years #but I’m still super anxious

as a rlly picky eater i feel like a lot of the "oh, you learn to like foods as you get older" is a lot more "you are now capable and willing to try foods that you hated in a different way bc it's more accessible to you now and bc you can personalize it" than "your body changed"

pc players talking about missing the combat of dao and how good it is as if they don’t have twenty million quality of life improvements and still constantly use skip combat mods. you do not want dao combat again. you hate it. take it from a console player who is forced to endure dao as it actually is: you do not want this again. you are not playing dao and you can’t even begin to understand how little you know it nor how good you have it

#keeping some degree of tactical elements and party control is good but dao is not a good game to play. its bad #i’m genuinely astounded at how much it sucks to play despite only being from 2009. it’s aged Decades it feels #which is baffling because earlier bioware games and even da2 just a year and a half later don’t have this problem or it’s only a fraction #as bad as origins is #anyways every da game is super different from the last and also dai will be a decade old when dreadwolf comes out and origins can probably #get a learner’s permit to drive in the us by that time. the new gameplay’ll be fine probably and either way that’s not really what most #fans are really here for anyhow. it’s about the cast and the world and scrambling that egg #i just really hate this specific kind of player who’s deluded themselves into thinking origins doesn’t suck #it’s good and it’s bad and feels terrible and amazing #it needs a remake for so many reasons and number one is an oghren rewrite and number two is making it bearable to play #also we literally have no idea what the gameplay for dreadwolf looks like in practice so maybe save your comments for when you play it

Oh yeah. Xavier is a breakfast skipper, much to Storm's chagrin. The most he eats is like a granola bar, and that's an uncommon occurrence. And yeah, Storm is a breakfast food enjoyer! But specifically like, steamed buns. Chinese breakfast foods and the like. They definitely would eat those for every meal if they could. Sometimes they do!

Sorry for being so inactive lately. I have a new job. I think it’s going pretty well but it’s just a lot of information and a totally new sleep schedule that I haven’t gotten used to yet. I’m feeling pretty zombie ish after work. Hopefully I’ll get into a flow with things, but it’s probably going to be taking a lot of my mental energy especially since it’s retail and it’s Christmastime.

i know it's 1am rn but I am thinking about my favorite breakfast recipe, which is a really soft french-style scrambled egg poured over rice that's been seasoned with furikake, sesame oil, and soy sauce, and then u put more soy sauce and furikake on top of the egg and go absolutely fucking wild on it

#i woke up early enough to cook today #and it was so so SO GOOD #i have little packets of different flavors of furikake and that goes on the rice depending on the day's vibe #and then a bottle of tamago furikake and that goes on the egg. extra egg flavor. trust me #ive gotten p good at making super soft scrambled eggs really fast

next time you make scrambled eggs make them with thyme, nutmeg, lots of black pepper, and salt.

I don’t care about HOW you scramble them because that’s far more personal and I’m not your dad, but personally I like big curds that’re mostly cooked. the flavor combo is what matters. feels so fancy + is so good.

#eggs + nutmeg is so. so good. it’s been my favorite combo for literal years #scrambled eggs are one of the perfect foods imo. always a safe food #it’s super basic but try it and thank me later bc it’s good !!
