Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
I honestly believe this to be one of the best Scooby-Doo movies ever and it was easily a favourite movie of my childhood, its just so enjoyable and different to other scooby-doo movies but that isn't a bad thing, instead it's a great factor of this movie
5/5 without a doubt

Was not prepared to find out earlier that the actress Shelia James Kuehl who played the character of Zelda Gilroy on a show called The Many Loves of Dobie Gilis who was the basis of the character of Velma Dinkley in Scooby Doo is a lesbian.
All because she guest stared on a few episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies and at least one episode on Petticoat Junction.
Which is part of the Henningverse on which Quinton Reviews father Russ is doing a video essay on which is 38 hours long and might not even cover all of it.
If you want to check it out it is on youtube and there is a convient chapter time stamp for the Dobie Gilis section
I know Scott at NerdSync has talked about Dobie Gilis being the basis of the human characters of Scooby Doo in one of his videos too. Was still not expecting the awesome plot twist though.
Sorry for the long post but this info seemed important to at least mention

Everybody’s talked about Velma to death and had all their takes but I wanted to get one thought out that’s eating me alive before it completely passes from pop conscience.
This show creates so much contrast within itself so as to create a non-audience that it’s kind of incredible.
And it goes way deeper than people really think if you’ve only watched the takes from afar and seen a couple clips. Anything that this show or ANY show could possibly excel at it spoils for itself on a completely rapid pace and there is almost ZERO way to approach the show from any direction and enjoy it.
Layer 1 is it’s a Scooby spinoff, family friendly franchise, funny moments and charming characters, now it’s an adult show with cursing and gore and completely unlikable characters.
BUT THEN, say you’re here for the adult moments and gore and cursing. You are not going to be down for how juvenile and silly this show gets at the same time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So then you have this weird mix of rightism and leftism where the show has race-swapped characters who say politically incorrect things, idiots against race swapping characters will hate it and lefties will hate the actual ideology and “jokes” on tap.
Tumblr media
So say you don’t care about Scooby Doo and you’re approaching the show as an adult mystery show, the actual mystery and plot progression is painful, especially in the first week the show came out where there were only two episodes *and the plot had literally not progressed in the slightest and zero actual worthy clues have been found, only a red herring*
Say that you’re a fan of well-done animation, this isn’t that, the show does the bare minimum a majority of the time with maybe five seconds of sakuga if that per episode. But it’s also not atrociously bad to just show up to laugh at it, it’s boring in its terrible presentation.
The show ruins its serious moments with its “funny” moments, and ruins its “funny” moments with serious moments. If you’re here for a down-to-earth mystery, Velma assaults Daph with zero repercussion in the first 5 minutes of the show and main characters slice off background character limbs with zero repercussion. So you’re completely uninvested in taking the mystery or story seriously, and the comedy in and of itself does not work. I laughed a FEW times in the first two episodes. I actually enjoyed hearing about Velma’s mom going missing and her search for her, before the show ruined a touching scene seconds later.
I don’t even know if the show was made this way accidentally or on purpose for rage bait and I barely care about that aspect at this point, a behind the scenes feature completely going over production would be interesting but we are so not getting that in the detail I’d like. People have a pet theory the show was an original show before being slapped with Scooby Doo paint and like, no, if this show didn’t have the Scooby property it would not be better and it would not save it. It doesn’t HELP it to have the Scooby paint, but even REMOVING that element I would not like this show in a vacuum.
This show has TALENT behind it, the people behind it worked on Bojack Horseman and The Office, I’ve watched neither but people like those things in *droves*. It’s *bizarre* to put something together with such contrasting goals and non-audience with the pedigree of the people involved. It feels so accidental because in the leadup to this it REALLY FELT like the people making this show *cared* about it.
Some people say this show is bad because it doesn’t have Scooby and it’s a spin-off without the titular character. *Motherfucker what*. It’s not bad because it’s a spin-off it’s bad because it’s bad. It flies in the face of tons of other spinoffs that I’M SURE THESE SAME PEOPLE ADORE. Teen Titans, every piece of Robin media in general, Better Call Saul, Legend of Korra, Luigi’s Mansion, the list can go on and on. A Velma spinoff focusing on her character and doing a mature mystery twist on the formula sounds amazing on paper, it’s just the execution that fumbles.
Tumblr media
There’s this bit at the beginning of episode 1 that’s really emblematic of everything. They have some BG charas taking a group shower at high school and talking about how much they hate sexualized TV, and then one pipes up to say that they like it and sex absolutely sells and everyone else is secretly a pervert. In this censored privates shower scene. It MIGHT work as meta commentary, if these weren’t minors in highschool. Like no, this is not the sex that sells, your designs and art are god awful, I am not going to get turned on at these actual fucking teenagers. It’s really bizarre and awful that you made an adult show with adult concepts surrounding these actual teenagers in actual highschool.
Fred’s becoming one of the most beloved characters in animation history, his last few outtings have made him an adorkable himbo that people adore. And then in this he’s a spoiled rich pathetic white boy, which mind you, I would LOVE to bash on that archetype if it wasn’t goddamn Fred. I LIVE to hate on the rich and pampered with my absolute abysmal bank account. But when you make it THIS character with THIS history, people are OF COURSE going to be sore and going to miss old characterization.
MAYBE IT IS PURPOSEFULLY DONE RAGE BAIT AFTER ALL...
The best thing anyone can do is not talk about it (I have failed) and let it pass, but it’s not as if not talking about it will stop it because it’s already been renewed for a second season. Make it a meme that HBO Max holds terrible shows and renews terrible shows, “HBO Max, home of Velma, the worst show on streaming”
Anyway go watch Puss in Boots Last Wish!

The Problem with “Velma”
My issue with *Velma* is how they’ve managed to take a group of likeable mystery-solvers and a hilarious talking dog and turn them into despicable caricatures of themselves and replaced the dog with overly sexual jokes as their attempt of humor (which is even worse when you consider so many of the sexual jokes and nudity happen with minors, teens, AKA children!). It’s one thing to reimagine their race... but this reimagination lacks real connection to their main characteristics that make them Velma, Shaggy, Fred, and Daphne.
1. Velma isn’t an underdog; Velma is a cynical bitch.
2. Fred isn’t a himbo leader; he’s a stupid privileged white boy who seems to have a toxic masculinity enough to make it difficult for him to redeem himself during the series
3. Daphne isn’t an accidental support; she’s a mean popular girl who ditched her childhood friend and started treating her like crap.
4. Shaggy is no longer a cowardly foodie with the munchies; he’s a romantic interest for the dislikable protagonist and the opposite of everything he used to implicitly be.
5. Scooby is nowhere to be seen.

Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School
Tumblr media
Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School is an animated film released in 1988 featuring the titular Scooby-Doo as he follows his keeper Shaggy to his new job as a Gym Teacher. Unfortunately for the three, what they thought would be an easy paycheck turns out to be a harrowing experience as they misread the name of the school as Miss Grimwood's Finishing School for Girls, when in actuality it's a Finishing School for Ghouls. Who are also girls. Hence why I'm talking about it.
So this film has a suspiciously large fan base for what on the outside appears to be an innocuous Scooby-Doo film, so one of my goals for this review was to try and figure out why that is. So this will be a sort of combo review, the small text will be talking about the film while the larger text will be about the Girls featured in it.
The movie opens up with an adorable scene of Shaggy driving to their new job as Scooby freaks out as magical floating words introduce the main cast. This concludes in the words along with a heavy downpour obstructing Shaggy's vision, so he ends up at the nearby Calloway Military Academy by mistake. This is a great way to establish the setting, these two schools are situated right beside each other.
Correcting his mistake, Shaggy drives to the correct school, still unaware there's anything amiss until Miss Grimwood begins to introduce her students, where in classic Scooby-Doo style Shaggy and Scooby end up running around the school in fear, running into every single monster on the way. Excellent way to naturally introduce Shaggy and Scooby to the new characters, it ends up feeling pretty organic.
Sibella
Tumblr media
The first student we're introduced to is Sibella, the daughter of Count Dracula (THE Count Dracula this time). She gets the most screentime of any of the students by a less than slim margin, though honestly there still isn't much to say. She litters her speech with puns, something we learn later she likely got from her father.
She's got an alright if basic design. Nothing that really reads as "vampire" besides her fangs, though she likes fanning her hair out as if it were wings. Her bat design is very cute, it retains her eyes, color pattern and the "tuft" on top of her hair, so it reads very easily as Sibella.
As Shaggy stumbles around the school he eventually meets Tanis, the youngest of the girls at the school who hopes to fill her trophy case with the volleyball trophy traded between Miss Grimwood's school and the Military Academy next door. This element is introduced kinda awkwardly.
The next day, Shaggy is still somewhat on edge but has uncharacteristically become more accustomed to being around the girls. He and Scooby proceed to with little resistance lead the group in a ballet routine, with tutus and everything. The film then cuts to the Military Academy where we're introduced to the boys of the school. Their personalities aren't all that distinct but their dynamic works well.
Winnie
Tumblr media
Winnie seems to be close friends with Sibella. She's got several doglike qualities.
Her design doesn't immediately read as "dog", which honestly I kinda appreciate. She's a furry little creature. Nice color palette on her too, and the torn dress and bow invoke how werewolves are depicted with tattered clothes.
The bizarre rotten food of the school proves to be inedible even for the iron guts of Shaggy and Scooby, so in a cute show of appreciation Sibella springs for a pizza for the two. As the group explores the school's garden a pair of eyes are revealed to be "Venus spytraps", planted by the assistant of a witch called Revolta.
Tanis
Tumblr media
Tanis is a mummy and the youngest of the girls at Miss Grimwood's. Despite her youth and habit of sucking her thumb I was glad to find out she's not a token little kid character with matching mannerisms.
She's got a fine design. I really like the eyes poking out of the darkness trope, and her bandage ponytail is a cute touch. I wish there was something else breaking up her design, I guess that's the idea behind the ribbon, but even her dress is bandadges.
The two teams play, both sides using all manner of trick available to them, but in the end it's a narrow victory for Miss Grimwood's school. The trophy is begrudgingly handed over to Tanis.
Cut to the girls decorating for their upcoming Open House, excitedly waiting for their parents as Shaggy and Scooby panick in a similar fashion to when they first arrived. Despite their best efforts, the girls' parents find them with little effort and thank them.
Elsa
Tumblr media
Elsa Frankenteen (her actual name) is the daughter of Frankenstein's Monster. She comes off as a bit brutish but is revealed to be decently intelligent.
Her design is a different take on "teenage Frankenstein's Monster" than Frankie from Monster High or Vicky from Monster Prom. She takes a bit more after her father than her presumed mother, though like the other two her hair is also black with white streaks.
On their way out, the parents individually threaten Shaggy and Scooby if anything happens to their daughters. I like to think this is a way to assure the audience this won't lead to the pair confronting their phobias but it's more than likely just setting up something for later.
That night Revolta finally makes her move, siccing one of her minions on Shaggy. After some hijinks with Scooby the Spider Bat successfully infiltrates the school and hypnotizes Shaggy into planning a field trip.
Phantasma
Tumblr media
The disturbing prospect of ghost genetics gets brought up as one is left to wonder: is this a dead girl or are ghosts capable of reproducing and aging? Would she even really be a ghost then? Anyways Phantasma is a giggly girl who likes to play the piano and twisting her head too far.
She's completely blue, kinda like how Polly was from Monster High, which kinda makes me wonder if there's some rule I'm not aware of that ghosts are blue. When I think of a ghost the first color in my mind is green, is that just me? Her boots feel slightly out of place and her hairstyle perhaps was a poor choice for a character whose head rotates all the way around but despite those small isssues she might be my favorite design so far.
The next day, Shaggy decides to take the group to a nearby bog, coincidentally the same day the boys of the Military Academy are out for some field training. The girls are slowly snatched up one by one by Revolta's minion the Grim Creeper, with Shaggy and Scooby giving chase and the boys reluctantly deciding not to follow.
At her lair, Revolta plans to permanently brainwash the girls into serving her for life, and Shaggy, more afraid of the girls' parents than of Revolta, is determined to rescue them. Stumbling around her lair eventually leads them to the girls, where the boys of Calloway Military Academy regret their decision and show up to help. Revolta's potion becomes volatile and the group narrowly escape. In classic fashion the film ends with dancing, and a fun gag where more monster girls show up and Shaggy decides he's had enough and resigns.
Scrappy-Doo: The TRUE Monster
Tumblr media
So I've completely neglected to mention up until now that Shaggy and Scooby did not arrive at the school alone. I, like many people my age, grew up too late to have really known Scrappy, with my only familarity with the character being his mischaracterized appearance as the main antagonist in the first live action film and hearing older fans talk about how Scooby's nephew "ruined the franchise".
There may or may not be legitimate reason to dislike Scrappy-Doo, but you won't find it in this film. I found the way he idolizes his uncle and is constantly making excuses for him to actually be endearing and though he does end the film with a "rap" it's not enough to ruin the experience.
Revolta
Tumblr media
The Witch of the Web is introduced a short ways into the film but constant reminders of her interloping make sure you never forget she's lurking. Her goal of commanding the girls as servants is said to stem from her bitterness towards their parents at having "gone soft".
Her physiology isn't made apparent but she's got four arms and orange eyes. She may not be the most pleasant character to look at but there's enough to like for me to say I appreciate her design.
So if you're familiar with these characters but haven't seen the film it's likely because this movie has an almost suspiciously loyal fanbase. Maybe it aired on a popular TV network often at some point, or maybe it was a cheap home video when it first released? I'm not sure but this film is actually not these girls' only appearance.
Tumblr media
I'm not familiar with OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes beyond it's that Cartoon Network show that's crossed over with what feels like just about every other Warner Bros property, and among those crossovers is a single episode where slightly aged up versions of these characters visit one of the characters from the show.
Besides that that's it though. Still not completely sure why it's so popular, though it's a fun enough movie it's by no means my go to Scooby-Doo film, though it might be something I'll go back to once in a blue moon. It's a cute enough little film.
As for the Monster Girl fans, there's something about these girls that have stuck with other people for a long time, and who knows, maybe they'll stick with you too.

This is a real quote (at least I’m assuming it is) from the upcoming Scooby-Doo series, “Velma”..
I.. I have no words.. 😳
The way the text works so hard to emphasize “slut” and “die” I can just hear them screaming “LOOK AT US! BAD WORDS AND DEATH! ISN’T THAT CRAZY? WE’RE A COOOOL SCOOBY SERIES, RIGHT?” 😵
To be clear, I’m not necessarily against the idea of a Scooby-Doo series being more mature if it’s done properly. I think that the live action movies and crossover event “Scoobynatural” proved well that the series can handle more mature subjects and jokes while still staying fairly faithful to the source material.
This series though, it’s just taking beloved characters and changing them, making them rude and vulgar because that makes it an “adult” show. They’re going for shock value, making the gang do and say things you wouldn’t expect since they’re usually part of a family show, and that’s the main gag. It just doesn’t look like this show is gonna have much substance in its writing, which is sad because there’s SO much potential in the idea of more mature Scooby-Doo stories other than obvious and overly vulgar jokes.
I’m still going to give it a fair shot and watch at least the first episode, mainly out of pure curiosity for how a full episode will flow and if maybe it somehow manages to grab me any better than the advertising has so far. We’ll see how it goes, but so far I think most of the fans agree that this series was a huge mistake, and unfortunately I’m inclined to agree as well 🤦‍♂️

First update on the "Every Scooby Doo reviewed" project: I'm on day 4 and I've reviewed 5 episodes, with 3 on the docket for today! So far I've done:
Scooby Doo and Guess Who? Season 1 Episode 19: Fear of the Fire Beast (guest starring Steve Buscemi)
A Pup Named Scooby Doo Season 1 Episodes 1 and 5 (not in order because my sis and I wanted to watch one together): A Bicycle Built for Boo and For Letter or Worse
Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo Season 1 Episode 1: The Scarab Lives
What's New, Scooby Doo? Season 1 Episode 1: No Creature like Snow Creature
Something I find quite interesting (and refreshing) is how while it may not seem that way, each show is a different flavor of the same pie. Guess Who is trying to balance comedy with mystery and characterization, but often focuses more on the guest (though it worked in this episode); Pup does the same but for younger viewers and is far more successful because it's all toned up to 11; What's New takes the classic formula and probably is the best at taking itself seriously while still having fun (everyone felt fleshed out, it was great); snd Scrappy is God's anus (fr, he's already being pushed SO HARD). It's fun to see different takes of the same concept of fun mysteries with characters you like!
For today's trio of eps I have some real throwback stuff: the first episodes of Laff a Lympics (a barely counts sports parody, not gonna be the deepest reviewed in the vid), 13 Ghosts (very interesting premise but we'll see if it's executed well) and the episode that started it all, the first of Where are you! More thoughts to follow, asks are welcome!

01/01/24 - Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo
4/5 Stars
This one was pretty good! I quite liked the setting, the suspects, and how the gang felt like actual friends! The only thing I didn't really like was the questionable relationship between Shaggy and Velma's sister. Shaggy is like 18 at the least, right? Madelyn is like somewhere between 13 and 16... I think? Idk, vibes are off on that one. Anyway, I hope to see the mean GPS become a staple character in this era of Scooby, really liked him. All-in-all, not a perfect movie, but I liked it. It's better than Loch Ness Monster but worse than Goes Hollywood.
Also Whirlen is gay as fuck. Man appears in a puff of rainbow smoke and poses atop door frames that is a gay man right there.
