Ok, so apparently the Bridgerton books are being reprinted with the cast on the covers? Please know that if you’ve never read the books that this is false advertisement. Bridgerton is super white. If you want diverse period dramas I suggest reading Beverly Jenkins, Alyssa Cole, Lena Hart, Courtney Milan, Erica Ridley, Sapna Bhog, Dahlia Rose or Jeannie Lin. The author of Bridgerton also gives off racist vibes due to her “Black ppl don’t fit in my world” comment around the time the first season came out.

Do you know any black HR novels? I feel like the only one I hear about is Beverly Jenkins' novels. I know Alyssa Cole has written a few as well. I read Dare to be a Duchess by Sapna Bhog and... *deep negro spiritual sigh* I don't even know where to begin with that one lol

I've heard a few..... things about Sapna Bhog and I can imagine that it was a STRUGGLEBUS

I have read a few authors besides Alyssa Cole and Beverly Jenkins that I can recommend with a *; I can't necessarily attest to their authenticity, but they were interesting reads for me.

Rebel Carter writes black historical romance--I believe that most of hers are set out west, and at least one is MMF, which is kind of a nice break from the typical HR setup, right? She also has written wlw but I forgot to recommend that when I was asked about those.

I believe that Courtney Milan (who to be clear, is Asian) has written at least one black heroine into her Brothers Sinisters series. I think it's Talk Sweetly to Me, which is a novella.

Vanessa Riley writes some pretty different historical romances (her latest book, Island Queen, is not a historical romance)--her Advertisements for Love series is really fun.

Keep an eye out for Adriana Herrera if you're open to stories about Afro-Latina heroines in a historical setting. She has a novella in the Duke I'd Like to F... anthology about an Afro-Latina heroine, and I believe she has a series in the works about a group of Afro-Latina sisters who travel from South America to Europe.

I've heard of Kianna Alexander and Elise Marion in good terms, but I haven't read their work.

The shame is that I know based on the reading that I've done that there was a larger clutch of black women writing historical romance around the same time as Beverly (probably under Vivian Stephens), but I imagine that a lot of their books are either out of print now or generally difficult to find.
