Skulls Sanctus Company Champion-Headsmen

Eleven there are, and eleven there shall be. Strong of arm and pure of mettle, our honor is theirs, and their honor is the chapter’s.

The Headsmen are exemplars of melee combat. Warriors of undeniable skill proven with decades of combat where they did not just survive, but thrive.

Tolvern Göttstein

(Tolvern is unique amongst the current Heasmen of the chapter in that he is the oldest. A warrior with little over 200 years experience, his skill and zeal for the duel has pushed him to the brink of death repeatedly. Yet, through timely intervention or second wind he has turned back every lash of fate. Over the course of his two centuries of service he has taken a placement as High Headsman, willingly surrendering it under the belief he had become slow in his old age.)

In the Skulls Sanctus, when a warrior of the company’s assault squads proves himself, he has two paths. Most join the first company, lending their martial prowess to the field clad in ancient relics, rending foes apart. Some, however, are better than the best. Their leadership and courage second only to their sheer dominating presence within the press of melee. Victors of countless duels against brother and foe alike, none remain who question their skill.

When such a brother’s skill is revealed the current Headsman of their company seeks out the chaplaincy. Its members assess the warrior’s chosen prospect. If found worthy they will declare “Aspirant Rising”, a ritual duel wherein the Headsman will be pitted against their chosen successor.

(Every headsman bears a book of ancestors. Within its pages are the names and remembered deeds of every champion and aspirant who has fallen in that company’s name. It is a holy relic, not one a headsman will part with willingly.)

Though the claimed intent of the duel is for the warrior to defeat the Headsman, none has ever done so. The reality is for the champion to see, with their own eyes and blade, if the aspiring warrior could be worthy of the title. Should they pass they will be granted the Red Skull honors. From that point forward they will be deployed only ever in strike forces or crusades containing the Headsman, the intention that they be kept near. In the event of the Headsman’s death, the aspirant will be given the fallen’s brain in a Soul’s Continuation ritual and rise to the rank of Headsman.

From that day forward his life will be spent between meditative communication with the lingering spirit of past champions, training, and battle. His only duty to seek out the strongest foes upon countless battlefields and destroy them.

(Tolvern is one of the remaining brothers from before the chapter’s Primaris reinforcement. Taking to his new enhancements, his bodycount of xenos and heretic grows ever higher.)

My DMC oc and my take on Nero's mother/The lady in red. Her name is Julia De Bellona- an accomplished devil hunter and the former Supreme General of the Order of the Sword. Oh boy, this character, this character. Originally created her sometime when I was around 13 or 14 after playing the OG trilogy of games for the first time. She's changed a lot over the years and I honestly don't recall ever having worked this hard to develop a character before in my life LOL I haven't gotten everything written down yet, but I'm really proud of what I have managed to do.

Prior to the rise of Sanctus, Julia's family, The Bellona, ruled over Fortuna as Feudal Lords- a position entrusted to them by Sparda himself prior to his disappearance. Throughout the generations, their primary goal was to protect humanity from demonic threats- which earned the love of their people and eventually led to the founding of The Order of the Sword; an organization of knights equipped and trained to defeat their evil foes. Julia was born from this long, accomplished line of devil hunters; but her abilities far exceeded those of her ancestors and allowed her to become one of the greatest devil hunters of her age- despite the fact that for most of her life, she was only a mere human.

Compassionate, capable, and determined, Julia rose quickly through the ranks of the Order and was the youngest Supreme General the Order of the Sword had ever seen- but she handled the position with a wisdom that surpassed her years. Under her careful guard, Fortuna was at peace for many years. But shortly after her promotion, she would meet a mysterious stranger who would change her life forever.

Vergil, one of the sons of Sparda, traveled to Fortuna seeking information on the Order and its former ruler in his quest for power. They begin in opposition, but the cold man would eventually win Julia’s heart. Though her compassion and plea to live a life of peace by her side appealed to her lover’s long buried humanity, Vergil chose to cast it and her aside to continue on his journey. Though heartbroken by the loss- she soon discovered that he had left a part of himself with her forever in the form of a child- A son she named Nero.

The following is a rough outline of the rest of her story.

A few months after Nero’s birth, Julia learns of the emergence of the Temen-ni-gru, one of the many gateways to the underworld sealed by Sparda after the war between humans and devils ended. Remembering Vergil’s quest for power, she leaves Fourtuna to stop him herself, but by the time she arrives in the city the events of DMC 3 have already unfolded. Wanting answers, Julia learns from several frightened locals that a white-haired man running a mysterious shop was responsible for ending the threat. Curious and slightly hopeful, she makes her way to the newly named “Devil May Cry” and meets Dante, Vergil’s twin brother, for the first time. 

Seeing the identical twin of her former lover is deeply off putting at first, but Dante doesn’t notice. He initially thinks she’s some kind of reporter when she asks for the story of what went on in the tower, and remains uncooperative until Julia successfully manages to bribe him with Pizza. He tells her everything but what she really wants to hear; but from their conversation Julia is able to piece together that the man who was responsible for the catastrophe died within the demon world.  

After leaving the shop Julia decides to investigate the ruins of the Temen-ni-gru. While walking amongst the debris, numb with grief, she is surprised to discover the Yamato amongst the wreckage. After pulling it free, she remains there for several hours debating with herself on the wisdom of her next decision, but she eventually gives into temptation and uses the Yamato to travel to the demon world to search for Vergil herself. 

Two long, brutal weeks full of fights and close calls with demons pass. Julia searched long and hard, but eventually, after she was unable to find any trace of him,  she was finally forced to admit Vergil was really gone. She retreats back into the human world using the Yamato and returns home.

Julia intermittently returns to the demon world to continue searching for Vergil. Almost a year later, she finds him (Or rather, finds Nelo Angelo) held captive and unresponsive. After a brief, but explosive battle with Mundas, Julia escapes with Vergil back to the human world. 

This encounter is witnessed by Machiavelli, the creator of Nelo Angelo, who is immediately intrigued that a human would risk her life for a demon.

Uncertain how to awaken him, she seeks out Agnus and asks for his aid in helping Vergil.

A/N: studying Vergil in this timeframe is what gives Angus the inspiration to build the false angels.

Agnus betrays Julia by turning in all his discoveries (her possession of the Yamato, her apparent relationship with a demon) over to Sanctus. Who takes it upon himself to execute the “traitor”. In a cruel twist of fate, he stabs her with Vergil’s own sword. The blade is shattered by a sudden, mysterious surge of power. My personal hc is that just as the sword recognized Nero, the sword recognized Julia, and it shattering was due to it being forced to do something that went against such an important connection.

A/N: Explaining both how the Order manages to get their hands on the sword and why it's broken.

As Julia lays dying, Nelo Angelo/Vergil finally awakens. Recognizing Julia on some level, he does not like what he sees, and slaughters Sanctus’ terrified guards. Forcing the Vicar and Angus to flee for their lives.  

With their enemies vanquished, Nelo Angelo/Vergil touches Julia’s face. But in that moment, Julia's thoughts are consumed by worry for Nero. And with her bit a strength, pleads with the Dark Knight to save their son before Sanctus finds him.

He obliged her last wish, taking an infant Nero from Julia’s home to the orphanage where Nero would grow up in.

A/N: Wrapped the crying boy up in his black cape before his departure. Staff of the orphanage would continue to call him Nero as a result.

Sanctus falsely frames Julia as a traitor to the people she had spent her life protecting- and Sanctus orders that all traces of her and her family be erased / never spoken of again. Explaining why she isn’t mentioned in game.

Julia’s body disappears afterwards/is never found by Sanctus. Debating, but my current thought is Nelo Angelo/Vergil took her to Machiavelli, whose spent the last 20+ years reviving her and turning her into the perfect demon. Knowing that she would be a Queen worth following.

A/N: Explaining that Machiavelli isn't dead, he's actually just been working on his Magnum opus this entire time.

After the events of DMC 5, Julia finally awakens and takes over the demon world in the absence of Urizen. She's lost most of her memory from her time as a human and doesn't realize how long it's been- but she recalls she has a son and that's in the human world, in a city called Fortuna, and is determined to find him-

since my story, cynosure's ascendance is being received well—that and i wanna continue the plotline cause my mind runs wild having an oc of mine enter the hsr verse, so most definitely, it'll be continued. it takes part after the quest of windswept wanderlust in the Xianzhou Luofu, that intriguing ass quest where stelle/caelus needed to go uhh, uncover a high figure of sanctus medicus, diciples of the aeon of abundance but ultimately, mauve moon escaped even after you fought them in the game, but the fem!reader of that story—actually please go read cause it'll be too much to unpack here 😭 ANYWAYS, it will be very much continued and it will be packed with fight scenes, realistic canon interactions with the hsr characters, LOTS of words, and so forth, and if there are any suggestions about anything in regards to my hsr storyline or another thing, my asks are open!

currently, i have been brainstorming a lot, for cynosure's ascendance's plots, to the jing yuan fic i mentioned previously, and i've been struggling with inspiration, nevertheless, i will always deliver an immersive storyline for the readers who feed on their imaginations.

i've been also just lore studying, about hsr, keeping up with honkai impact lore, will get into genshin again (cause of the hot ass fatui harbringers shinanigans ive been seeing around) annnnd so forth

arcturus religious arc?? do say more

arcturus is funny because i haven't actually talked about them and the rest of the MCM cast on this blog very much (in fact i don't think i've even namedropped leus?) but they occupy so much of my brainspace. at least 1/339274th of my singular braincell. and lemme tell you that's more than any one OC frankly ever should

anyway! arcturus is religious. like. in the freak sort of way. in the they're Really Fucking Normal about this sort of way. they're so fucking normal right now. you can trust them. they swear. they are soooooooooooooo normal.

to elaborate further would be getting into MCM (and some hints of APF) lore as a whole, which i will do anyway, but under the cut because i like to pretend to respect my follower's dashboard scrolling time

so. the thing about APF and MCM is that they are two wildly different stories taking place at wildly different times in fantasy world history. but they are taking place in the exact same setting with the exact same shared fantasy world history.

this is the full mimue geographical world map, sans cities, primarily made for APF purposes but also featuring MCM's two (unnamed as of right now) focus continents off to the far left. MCM's story mostly spans the northern part of this duo. unlike what i affectionately refer to as "the APF plot triangle" (or eastern mimue, if you wanna get technical) country names are not synonymous with continent names and this is weirdly way more important to MCM lore than you might think.

this is an extremely rough mockup of a "mimue political map". green designating arboret, gold designating sanctus, blue designating requies... and brown designating medeis, with icy blue designating sulia. grey designates a cluster of various smaller border countries that definitely exist but i haven't worldbuilded them as of yet and don't really plan to go in-depth with them because they're mostly irrelevant to anything ever.

MCM focuses on medeis and sulia. and only these two. another crucial element of MCM is that everyone living there is completely disconnected from the other side of the world. the map makes them seem relatively close to arboret but in actuality it's way more like a mutual undiscovered new world situation. the folks in western mimue have absolutely no idea there's an APF plot happening in the first place, much less a cluster. similarly, everyone in APF is unaware of western mimue's existence and they all consider arboret to be the furthest edge of the known world (with just ocean laying beyond that). christopher columbus hasn't attacked mimue yet is what i'm saying.

however. they do share a world history, and setting, and magic system, and hey wasn't there a whole thing with eastern mimue and an angel blessing the world a thousand years ago that encompassed the entire planet in scope and you can go read about it on Ao3 if you feel like it right now?

y'know. that mildly significant part of mimue history that basically overturned the world forever and inspired a new religion in eastern mimue dedicated to following the angel like it's a god. that mildly important minor detail.

yeah, the MCM crew has no idea about any of that. but they were still affected by it. they just... interpreted it slightly differently.

magic in the world of mimue is an anomaly by mimian standards. something New and Weird and Unnatural. eastern mimue, with the context of the blessing angel as a bringer of peace and forgiveness and prosperity, treats it as something to be valued and admired.

western mimue does not do this. western mimue basically got blasted with magic with zero context of what was going on across the ocean, and everyone is CONFLICTED about it. some believe it's a favor from their gods, others believe it's a curse from those that scorn them, and still others shun anyone with "too much" magical ability in the first place.

by-the-by, completely totally definitely unrelated to that above statement, who are those western mimue gods?

well.

while those in eastern mimue have largely abandoned mimue's old ways and barely anyone has any real recollection of The Before Times, western mimue is desperately clinging to those exact same old beliefs. to its old gods, for lack of a better word.

no, seriously. who were these old gods?

dragons, of course. they're the primary subject of worship in western mimue- and a dying one, at that. in modern-day MCM (and by extension modern-day APF, though it takes place a long while before MCM) most of the median and sulian population haven't seen a real "godlike" dragon in centuries.

but they are still very much around. just. hanging out. being worshipped and served by mortals. fully sapient talking dragons held up as gods. are they actually? that's debatable, but also a debate topic that'll get you a lot of stink-eyes in sulia and some especially devout sectors of medeis.

speaking of.

arcturus! remember when this was an ask about them and not just a mimue theological history lesson? yeah i don't either. but lets discuss them anyway.

a lot of what y'all can know about arcturus (without spoiling MCM too much) can be found in their point-of-view story, wherein they admittedly don't spend a lot of time ruminating on their faith but do namedrop their draconic overlords at the very end all dramatic-like.

they briefly allude to their backstory though! that's something!

to keep an even longer rant about medeis political lore short, arcturus is in a position roughly equivalent to the president. their official in-universe title is Honored Exemplary, but in terms of real-world-analogy it's essentially just being president of the united states.

y'know. if the US was an expansionist empire with technology far surpassing anything else in the world and was also powered by a monster kept in the basement that has to be fed live sacrifices weekly or else the entire thing goes to hell. and also the president and the head of parliament had a weird toxic yuri situationship going on and it's probably inevitably going to end in either murder, a double suicide pact, or both.

so, just the US, really.

the funny thing about arcturus is that they aren't actually native to medeis. parallax is! they aren't. their original home was conquered early-on in their youth, and they've basically grown up surrounded entirely by median society and technology.

and they've adapted like a fish to water. they're like if the country mouse discovered cars exist and became an absolute sicko over it. meanwhile parallax is like if the city mouse just really yearned to be eaten alive by moss (neither of these fucks are normal or honestly entirely sane)

worship of the great big questionably-deity lizards was a BIG part of what little they can remember about their old life. and they're like. REALLY into it. they're the guy who insists you have to pray before every meal and spends an hour daily kneeling in front of their dedicated God Shrine asking for repentance. they latched onto dragonology like a dying man in the desert latches onto a water bottle. they're very very very big on punishing themself for the whole technically-being-a-serial-killer-by-feeding-the-basement-monster thing and they see religion as an outlet for exorcising their own sins. which is really normal behavior, im sure.

and also magic tends to be viewed in a really negative light by Hardcore Traditionalist People™ and they were raised in that environment and as a mutant with zero magical ability to speak of they were basically uplifted as a savior and a favorite of god from day one and they've got an absolutely horrible case of hyperempathy + religious savior complex because of it. so y'know. that's also a mildly important factor. just a tad bit.

TLDR;

arcturus does this. but like. for dragons.

Skulls Sanctus Lieutenant

Pinnacles of strategic acumen, the lieutenants of the Skulls Sanctus are leaders of the highest grade. Veterans of the first company, each has decades of combat experience. However, battle experience is only half of what makes a leader.

(Lt. Leonis “The Lion” Furon. A veteran of the Indomitus torchbearer fleet, initial contact was with brothers of the Skulls third company. His skills saw him honorarily taken into the 8th close support squad, so he bears their colors.)

The chaplaincy teaches that only those who know themselves can know their ancestors. Since initiation, the marines of the Skulls engage in regular spiritual meditation. Self-actualization is directly tied to the strength of the memories a brother will pass on, making the greatest goal of these meditations to know oneself. However, there is a phenomenon among the chapter known as the “Soul Union”. Seen as the highest form of spiritual enlightenment and purity, it is marked by the marine reaching a duality. They, at once, experience themselves and all the lives they have taken in. They are still the distinct individual they have always been, and yet they are every lost brother they have known. They become terrors on the battlefield, calling upon multiple different lived experiences in an instant to thwart any foe.

Only brothers who have experienced this spiritual awakening are seen fit for positions of leadership, and only those from the first company can become a lieutenant. When a brother has achieved both, he joins with a company on crusade. Fighting alongside them, he will battle until a lieutenant falls, taking that brother’s memories and position.

(The torchbearer fleet never partook of the chapter’s rituals. This was a point of contention when the leadership of the fleet met the leaders of the chapter. Leonis was instrumental in the acceptance of the fleet.)

Should the foe have survived, it is not uncommon for these new lieutenants to become incredibly dogged in the hunt for their brother’s killer.

HELLOOOOO HI DEAR heheheh it's a fan planet, and i do!!!! here are some little facts about their homeworld for you:

ambrose and artemis' homeworld initially wasn't war-ridden, but after a certain lord ravager decided to sew a little bit of destruction there... it completely fell apart. she has been known to quite enjoy the self-destruction of poor little humans, now hasn't she? and ambrose and artemis were born into that chaos and destruction, leading to ambrose's bitterness towards nanook once they found out what caused their homeworld to fall apart like that. artemis would also fucking tear the destruction's throat out if she ever got the chance btw, fuck being afraid of the aeons.

it is now a peaceful planet nurtured by yaoshi's blessing <3 so it is an abundance faction! but they aren't quite welcoming any visitors at the moment... can you blame them? now that they have the power to keep unwanted guests out, it only makes sense that they would never let anyone in. however, if it were ambrose's will, then they would happily let people in.

the people of their homeworld are among the more normal and sane abundance factions actually 👍 they do not believe in hurting others in yaoshi's name and genuinely believe that those who do are insane (looking at you, dan shu's disciples of sanctus medicus 🤨🫵) because what kind and gentle god would want to bring unecessary harm? not theirs. um. they think, anyway!

(^ if they turned out to be wrong, i think they would go rogue actually. the majority of those people are wise enough to not bend easily to the will of an evil deity, no matter how much they previously loved said god... can't say the same for ambrose 🤷‍♀️)

overall they are actually a very good and kind faction!! but they prefer to keep to themselves and preserve the peace they have found.
