i saw someone recently say that they preferred sambucky over stevebucky (either platonic or romantic tbh) because they felt bucky was happier not living under the shadow of his former self? suggesting that he intentionally spent most of him time post winter soldier away from steve because he didn't want to be compared to a former version of himself that he couldn't return to? I'm a big lover of stevebucky so the idea that steve wouldn't be able to stop comparing (even if subconsciously) post-ws bucky to pre-ws bucky made me question the ship slightly? or that bucky was actually happier without steve in the readjustment process bc he could become his own person without preconceived ideas of what he should be like hanging over his head. I've read a few fics about this and i kinda wanted to know what u thought - would steve's knowledge of the old bucky affect their relationship so negatively that bucky would be happier alone/with people unfamiliar with who he was before (sorry for the rambling question)

Thank you lovely for the very interesting ask! I love these kind of hypotheticals!

First and foremost, don't ever let anyone convince you that you're only allowed to ship one pairing. A lot of people DO only ship one ship, and kudos to them, but you are not a bad fan if you want to ship Bucky with multiple people. Heck, I got into Stucky via Sambucky, and uh…anyway, here I am.

The idea that "Bucky stayed away from Steve because he didn't want to be compared to old Bucky" is one of my favourite angsty "loss of innocence" tropes to explore -- because yes, that's going to be one of Bucky's major insecurities after the Winter Soldier. He isn't the same person as before and no matter how hard he tries, he's never going to go back to who he was before.

The absolutely fascinating part, then, is how a fanfic writer decides to address this. So yeah, I can see this as the jumping board for a SamBucky story (or any other non Stucky ship).

But this is also a concept that not only fits in well within the Stucky fanon/narrative, it's also crucial to explore in order to bring the two of them back together. How does Steve accept that Bucky has changed, and how does Bucky come to trust that Steve accepts this changed version of him?

The answer is, for me, this is Steve we're talking about. Steve with all his tenacity and empathy and loyalty. This is Steve who's known Bucky since childhood, who probably knows Bucky better than the current Bucky remembers himself. This is also a Steve has fought one of the bloodiest wars in history. He is young, but he's not naive. The people of his time didn't have the right words for it - but he has seen a lot of mental health issues on the field. He's come out on the other end of the war still believing in the goodness of humans (his "I'm willing to bet I'm not" speech), so I have no doubt he will look at Bucky and see that -- yeah, you've changed, you've had terrible things happen to you for well over half a century, but you are also still the same kind soul that I grew up with, and that kindness is what's most important; I can still see him in you, even if you are different, and I believe you deserve all the love I can give you.

And you know what, there IS canon evidence that Steve believes in Bucky, believes in the goodness that couldn't be burned away with 70 years of brainwashing. Sam saying to Steve - (Bucky) isn't the kind you save and he won't know you - and Steve replying without an ounce of doubt in his voice, "He will." Or Steve going after Bucky to save him from the SIT because "he'd have done the same for me".

I think another crux is that recent gif set - the "I'm following the little guy from Brooklyn" speech. That was a vow - it was Bucky saying "I loved you (platonically/romantically/wte) when you were a poor disabled scruffy kid in the dumps, and I will love you just the same even if you're a buff blue-eyed Adonis." Their story, as always, encircles each other's - it is now Steve's turn to say "I loved you when you were a nerdy protective flirt and I will love you just the same even if you're disabled and scruffy and dealing with horrendous PTSD". I think that vow also highlights just how important Steve was, even at that point, to Bucky, which means…their loyalty will always draw them back to each other. Once Bucky sees Steve has faith in him, he will have faith in himself to rebuild his identity in a way that's true to him.

It really depends on the writer, but most versions I’ve seen in which Steve and Bucky separate (over this issue) write Steve as either obtuse, selfish or emotionally immature…which is not how I read him to be. I think he has the emotional maturity to accept that Bucky will have similarities but will also have stark differences to who he once was...but then, time leaves its mark on everyone it touches, not just Bucky (I kinda touched on that concept on my "Learning to Want" fic *self plug*). It's a rough road and on some days there's going to be more setbacks than progress, and yeah on some days Steve is going to get frustrated and upset and maybe even a little defeatist, but I think both he and Bucky have that tenacious survivor streak in them that will pull them through, especially if they're together.

friends to enemies to lovers (i.e., catradora): grew up together, started out close (platonic only for this one, will accept lingering crush/feelings, but never acted upon); had a falling out/tragic “breakup”, eventually worked it out and got into a romantic relationship they never got to have before

friends to lovers to enemies to lovers (i.e. wolfstar): similar to the previous, but they worked their shit out and actually had a relationship before the big “breakup,” which makes the back to lovers after all the enemy stuff all the more satisfying

lovers to enemies (i.e., satosugu; cherik; the doctor x the master): l loved you once, but you turned to the dark side and I can never forgive you despite the lingering sadness of having once trusted you like no other. i am vulnerable because you knew me. 😵‍💫😭 or just bickering bitter exes 🤪

enemies AND lovers (i.e., lawlight): i feel like this is so specific to light and L, but i’m sure there’s more. yeah, they hate each other and they also want to fuck each other. self-explanatory. toxic but in a fun way

enemies to friends to lovers (i.e., eruri; sambucky; violyn; gigolas; lumity): this is the peak of the content. this is what people really want in that enemies to lovers package. that middle ground of friendship where they dance around each other in a nice slowburn, denying romantic feelings whilst still getting used to tolerating one another’s presence bc they used to hate/extremely dislike each other…yeah 😎

Summary: Lately, it feels physically impossible for Bucky to show his romantic side. He fears this will mean the end of his relationship with Sam. Unexpectedly, they end up having this very conversation one night.

Excerpt:

Bucky came from a time when buying a dame flowers was just simply proper etiquette for a date. Some fellows complained about that kind of thing, but Bucky liked it.

The truth is, young James Buchanan Barnes was a hopeless romantic. Now Steve would probably laugh at that but that was on account of Bucky always taking so many girls out on dates. The thing Steve didn’t understand was that was just the game, the fun, the chase of it all. Bucky liked that part too but really, he was waiting for the right one. The one he was going to go all out for, make all the stops for. He couldn't wait.

He never did find the one, of course. And after his eighty-year imprisonment, as he likes to refer to it, he lost his romantic side altogether. He physically cannot do it anymore. He knows this because when Sam asked him on their first date, Bucky spent all afternoon at a flower shop so sure he was buying the man a bouquet but he ended up leaving with nothing. He couldn’t do it and all night, he talked himself out of doing a single romantic thing.

Like even if Yelena wasn't aroace I would still hate it. Like even though they haven't met yet I still see them as having more of a sibling dynamic. I’m very fond of this concept of Sambucky where one of them is a very experienced person in terms of relationships and the other one has no idea what he’s doing in that department.

It can honestly go both ways. Because, technically, Bucky has spend a lifetime without being in a relationship. He also doesn’t really know how the “dating culture” developed over the years and he could be confused about things that even single people in the 21st century understand as obvious. (Not to mention that he might have dated girls, but he probably never had a boyfriend.)

In this scenario Sam would be the experienced one, who had at least 2 or 3 longer relationships and a handful of shorter flings during the last 20 years, which gives him the natural advantage. Not everything is purely about feelings, after all. Sometimes there’s some actual knowledge and skills involved if you want to have a lasting relationship.

But... on the other hand. Sam was always busy with his life and he has a tendency to mask his emotions without truly showing what he thinks or feels. It’s not the easiest personality to help one with buiding a happy couple. Which might have resulted in him never having any actual romantic partner despite being an attractive and charming person.

Meanwhile, Bucky in this version could just rely on his past tendency to flirt with everyone around him. He’d just assume that it doesn’t matter how out of touch and old-fashioned he is, as long as he can give someone a nice compliment or make them feel special. The details are easy to ignore if you just have enough charisma.

Anyway... I just think there’s something very special about the relationship where one of these two adults, who have gone through so much shit, can barely form a sentence when he’s flustered while their partner just fondly looks at them as they try to act calm. (“I’ve almost died three times this week! I killed countless people! Why am I so nervous to tell this guy he’s pretty!?”)

oh i ADORE when people leave those long comments that mention/react to specific parts of the fic/chapter that they loved/want to speculate on/etc. like if i get a comment notification email and i see like a block of text or multiple paragraphs it keeps me going for WEEKS afterwards!!! obviously all (positive) comments are appreciated, but those are always my very favorite

💞: what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

the characters! i've talked with a-chan about this a bunch recently, actually, especially since i write so many aus, and my general metric for how successful and AU is is if you recognize the characters even though they're in completely different situations. like that's the metric for me if i've written a successful fic, if the characters are believably themselves no matter what situation i've written them in, canon or otherwise (which leads me to another favorite au-specific comment, which is when someone compliments me on characterization or on how i work specific plot points into a ficverse separate from canon!)

there are certain fics however that i wanted to have Certain Vibes™, so in those cases the figurative language was also very important to me (the angel/demon au comes to mind here). and given i was kind of forcibly made editor in chief of my high school paper when i was still a Young Mak, i'm ngl and say grammar isn't also very important to me lmao. i'm always in awe of other people's fics with amazing worldbuilding, but i think that matters to me the least. it's why i love the LOTR movies but the books weren't my favorite. couldn't handle that much worldbuilding (sorry, tolkien)

my least kudos'd fic is it's raining on prom night, which is unsurprising, given it's a samriley prequel to a sambucky au.

i do really love this fic tho! getting to write high school aged sam in sweet puppy love with his childhood best friend was so much fun, and i loved getting to dig deeper into who sam was before we got into the actual au proper. i also really loved the way i wrote this exchange, specifically bc i think i did a pretty good job of establishing the kind of banter, relationship, and history they have despite it being such a short fic that takes place way into their knowing each other (and even dating each other)

“A gift is a nice way of putting it,” Riley replies, laughing. “That flower was half-dead and I’d given it to you specifically because my mama was gonna kill me if I ruined another one of her bouquets and you were the nearest person to me. Also we were five, but if you want to consider that the start of my long game to get you to date me, I’ll accept the status of romantic mastermind.” Sam laughs, grabbing the Swiss army knife out of his pocket that Peggy would kill him for having at a diplomatic event and cutting down a bloom to hand to Riley. “You were some kind of mastermind, all right. Your mama would’ve yelled at anybody else, but I was the new kid and the pastor’s son, so I got a free pass that day. Everybody went home happy, and I accidentally landed myself a troublemaker best friend.” Riley makes sure the partial stem is free of thorns and tucks the rose behind Sam’s ear. “Everybody went home happy except my mama, you mean.” “Well, that’s a given. Her poor roses.”

☯️: how do you think engaging with each other through tumblr, twitter, comments, kudos, creates healthy fandom experiences? How do you deal with that if you're not a social person/experience social anxiety?

this is,,, a complicated question. on the one hand, i've developed some really great fandom friendships i never would have otherwise if i hadn't started writing (i've always been a lurker before now, and while i had some mutuals i was fond of, they were never people i'd seek out for conversation, much less go visit/have them come visit me!) on the other hand, there are some really toxic people in fandom, and publishing your own work opens you up to a lot of vulnerability when those people don't play so nicely, especially when you imbue a lot of yourself into your work through the characters, or your time, or even in some cases your experiences. it also can lead to the trap i found myself falling into last year, which is that since so many of my fandom friends came bc i was writing, i feared i'd lose them all when i stopped writing. obviously this hasn't happened even as my output has slowed dramatically (early 2022 mak would probably be horrified to know i haven't published anything in like five months), but that was a legitimate worry i had, and it was. very bad on my mental health. so it's all about striking that balance of finding friends and community but doing so in a way that like,,, doesn't leave you having anxiety attacks and major bouts of horrible self esteem over your own fics and writing ability at the end of it all

🧿: what steps do you take to not take things personally if a fic doesn't do well, or if your writing/posting/sharing experience isn't going how you'd like it to?

this goes back a lot to my previous answer which is just like. setting those own clear boundaries in my head that this is a hobby that i enjoy doing for myself and also bc i have wonderfully supportive friends, and like at this point i've published enough fics that i'm comfortable telling people off if they're shitty on them, tho thankfully there haven't been many instances (i am, however, forever haunted by an earlier fic i wrote where someone commented something along the lines of "i was kinda hoping [x thing that i didn't write] would happen but of course what you did was good too" and i wasn't confident enough to be like "hey what the fuck. this was kinda rude, friend. go write your own fic????")

basically if the response is negative, then either i learn if there's something to be learned, or if not, i tell them to go eat shit bc i know my value (@ peggy carter thank u for this wonderful piece of wisdom that has gotten me through many years of self doubt), or if the response is just lacking, then i brush it off bc i know that my fics 1) make me happy and 2) make a lot of my friends happy too. even if the fic doesn't do well, if i've just got one person gushing about how much they love it, well, that's someone else in this world i've made happy by doing something i enjoy, and that's enough :)

In my humble opinion, if Sam and Bucky are fucking around and in a relationship or even close to being in a relationship, and Bucky randomly leaves one day to find himself… or to get closure on his feelings for Steve (romantic or otherwise)… or to give Sam space (usually space that Sam never even asked for), then when Bucky shows back up, it’s absolutely okay to have Sam tell Bucky to go fuck himself.

I’ve only read like one “Bucky disappears out of the blue” fic where I didn’t end up looking at Bucky crosseyed by the end of the story and I actually understood why Sam took him back.

I love a SamBucky ending, but whew chile sometimes y’all have Sam out here with ZERO pride and it’s upsetting.

Seb/Bucky stan here, I'm not into shipping real people, that include evanstan & stackie, cuz I think it can get too awkward & there's always people who don't know boundaries. Also, people are too much into Seb's business as it is, wanking over his gf. But I agree that the connection & closeness shippers want Seb to have with Chris he has it with Anthony. I think one of the reason Evanstan was big was because of Stucky. People projected the ship into the actors.

You have your opinions. I have mine when it comes to shipping real people. But when it comes to double-standards with Evanstan and Stackie fans it's ridiculous because Sebastian talks about and interacts with Mackie more even though all three are close.

As for shipping Stackie... It's not like I'm going to walk up to Sebastian or Anthony irl and go, 'I know you dont know me, but you should totally bone your close friend. Do it for the content and tell me all the juicy details.'

Lol, I wouldn't do it to the people I actually knew irl. But gossip rags make their bread and butter on digging into famous people's lives. I'm just occasionally fascinated by these two fine actors and the characthers they play. Never involved or spoke ill of their love interests or family. Just loved all aspects of their relationship whether platonic or romantic; imaginary or real.

I do love SamBucky and Stackie. But when even the actors themselves admit to acting like their characthers, well damn, that's good content. 😈

okay so I was thinking about a SamBucky fake dating fic but they're not fake dating each other but rather Sam fake dates like Sharon for a bit for mission reasons or something and he & Bucky are actually dating but it's still kinda new so like it'd been building to this but you know they're taking things slow and no one other than like their circle of friends/teammates & family really know right now

and so Bucky is like yeah that's fine whatever but then when they start going on missions and he has to be the backup or whatever while they fake flirt it bothers him and he doesn't say anything because he doesn't want to be that guy they're professionals he knows it's fake but it makes him a little jealous but not in a possessive way bc I kinda hate that but in a like uncomfortable brings up insecurities kind of way bc he's got his issues he's still working thru and times when he wasn't always the best person even to Sam so he starts wondering if he's really good enough or if maybe he's just too much and worrying that maybe Sam won't want to keep being in this relationship or starts thinking that maybe Sam should be with someone else bc he loves him but he wants him to be happy and have all he deserves and all that

meanwhile Sam is actually spending most of the mission missing Bucky like yeah Sharon is nice and a friend and they work well together but he can't help but find himself wishing Bucky was there instead that he got to be flirting with Bucky and taking him on dates and also spending the time and even working more on mission stuff with him bc he's his partner in more ways than one now and some of it's just not the same with anyone else you know the way they work together but not in a codependent way bc it's important they have their own stuff too but they're still a team and they work well together and also like doing romantic stuff even tho it's fake would be still be nice if he could do this with his boyfriend you know

esp with it being new so Sam doesn't want to push like wants it to be when Bucky is ready and going at whatever pace is needed to but also the mission maybe separates them more than they're used to which is fine except that they maybe see each other less than they thought and they miss each other and maybe Bucky starts pulling away a little maybe not meaning to but as a coping mechanism and Sam isn't sure if it just seems that way bc they haven't had the time together or if Bucky is actually pulling away bc something is wrong

but neither wants to say anything bc they want to be supportive or they're worried about pushing the other way and they've both got their own traumas and anxieties and they love each other so much but aren't sure how to approach it at first and basically it's a lot of mutual pining and some misunderstandings and some angst until eventually it all comes out and they talk to each other about it and realize what the other is actually thinking/feeling and there's a genuine heart to heart and fluff and kisses and goodness bc that's what I'm here for

How come you dont vibe with comic sambucky? I haven't read many comics with either of them so I'm curious

I guess it just feels kind of lopsided? But not in a fun way. And then sometimes it feels a different kind of lopsided but in a bad way.

Like, it's easy to read buck as being infatuated with sam. He's got his "I care about not letting him down" thing, and his "I can't shoot him, he's too pretty" moment. But from Sam's point of view, he's just a mate. That's the only way I see it idk. He likes him, but you don't get the impression he's a massively important feature in his life, unlike with the mcu where you can feel the attachment and reliance.

(sidenote: I actually think this is a good thing. The times when sam's personal life gets overtaken by steve's entourage (especially ian) tend to feel off - they often make it feel like Sam himself views steve's life as more important than his own. He has his own life, his own family and friends. His 2015 series understood this - i.e. that he needs his own supporting cast to feel like an actual protagonist, and not steve's accessory.)

But yeah this lopsided-ness isn't a bad thing per se, you could go somewhere fun with it. I actually think Cold War missed an opportunity here. By having Bucky be attached to Sam in a way that Sam doesn't really reciprocate could make for a really good showdown between them. You have bucky pretending to be evil in order to trick steve into going along with something, and he's expecting to fight steve. But no, he gets Sam instead. And sam is like "Bucky's being a dick, so I'll fight him." because he's not too emotionally invested here. But bucky is thrown because he's not emotionally prepared to fight someone he has all this admiration for and nothing but good will.

This contradiction in perspectives comes to a head. Boom. Emotional climax. Changes the course of the plot. Falling action etc etc

But no, they didn't do that. They just threw a fight between them at the end there with some dialogue that didn't feel meaningful to me at all. Sam came into the situation with no real emotional investment and left it that same way. Just clocking in and out of work at the Captain America factory.

So that's the first thing, it feels like Sam doesn't have these feelings, and they don't really do anything with that asymmetry because I don't think they realise it's there, because these writers don't think Sam needs a complete internal world.

The other lopsided thing is the Falcon and Winter Soldier mini series. This just gave me bad vibes sorry. It's a mini series about Bucky and his pain and his problems and his wacky antics. Sam is there to play the straight man to his antics, and to nurture and tend to him.

Sam should never be cast as the straight man. In any sense of the term.

I am fundamentally uninterested in a version of this dynamic that is primarly driven by Sam looking after bucky. So, for me personally, interepreting their relationship in this series as romantic would turn it into something I don't like. Sam looking out for a friend? Fine, good, in character. But make it romantic and suddenly it's wrong to me.

I am fully convinced that this is not an appealing dynamic to sam. Like, a person who's coming to him for comfort and help? Not his type. Look at the people he's drawn to: Leila, Steve, Thor, Misty, Kyle (ignoring jet because that's just so so so ooc and regretable). It's people who are dominant, maybe authoritative. People who don't need anything from him, but want him anyway. People who pursue him, not people he's chasing after. He's specifically into Thor, and not Jane. Idk I just think that this version of their dynamic is one which is hard to imagine Sam even wanting.

This is all just very subjective opinion. And I do think that it's easily possible for them to get some interactions that give them a tone that I am into.

Personally, I am very keen on having them interact more outside of Steve. I think they're relationship to each other is more interesting without him there (and certainly without ian there. why is ian always here?) Hell, like I said, Cold War absolutely could have given us a more intense vibe from them. But it didn't. So, as it currently stands, I just don't vibe with it.

Again, I have neglected you, I am sorry! I have apparently been bad at replying to asks! Thank you for asking!

OBVIOUSLY, my favorite Sam 'ship is Sambucky. I have devoted an entire blog to these two fellas. I have a weird interest in SamRiley because I love to live in rarepair hell. I enjoy Sam/Misty in the comics. I also love SamSteve (in either the MCU or the comics you can't convince me these two haven't banged) and SamNat - I'm a big fan of the cap quartet as a poly ship, tho. Sam/Happiness IS a great pairing! Samquin and SamRhodey are cute, too. Sam/T'Challa has big enemies to lovers vibes and I'm here for it.

I tend to ship almost anything. There are few ships that are my NOTP.

Friendships? I really love the relationship that TFATWS started to build for Sam and Sarah as siblings. Joaquin both in the comics and the show has a cool dynamic w Sam.

Sam&Sarah! Adepero and Anthony did a wonderful job because

Sam/Joaquin: their relationship is everything! The way Joaquin admires and respects Sam! So relatable

Sam&Steve: Sam and Steve went through so much together, and Sam did so much for Steve, you don't do that just for anybody. They went on the run together, Sam and Steve were attached to the hip.

Sam & Scott: I don't know how to explain it but I want more of the them, I'm sure they would have the best dynamic in the MCU

Sam & Rhodey: we only got glimpses, but we already know they're great friends.

SamNat: I wish Sam had mentionned Natasha in Tfatws

Sambucky: of course my favorite ship!!! Best love storyline in the whole storyline...who can even compete?

Sam/Misty: I've been begging for years and I'm starting to lose hope but I would give so much to have Sam and Misty in the MCU!!!! I want to see it.

Sam/Steve: They're exes who became best friends! Sam and Steve had a thing in CaTWS...and people who don't agree wouldn't know a romantic storyline if it hit them in the head.

Sam/Joaquin: they went on a date, and Joaquin sends him pictures of himself, and they send eachother emojis....they're just the cutest ship. I usually like ansgty ships, but Samquin is one of the only ships where I would make an exception.

Okay Y'all, I've been DYING to write a Sam-centric SamBucky Story with a lot of angst. And I need to know if y'all would be down for this.

Okay so Sam and Bucky are In a really toxic relationship. Sam is constantly being Bucky's therapist, he is always seeing things from Bucky's side, he is giving his all for Bucky. Bucky isn't trying to hurt Sam. But his actions and his refusal to see Sam's point of View just weights down on Sam's mental health. Which in turn fucks up his own. Bucky can be too wrapped up in himself and it's drowning them both.

And the two are having a baby and are Engaged. Idk they can have a surrogate or it's an Omegaverse story. I don't know yet.

So the story starts and it's ticking down to both the wedding and the baby being born. Stress levels are out the roof for both the boys. But Sam is really loosing it. Between Being Captain America and his personal life, he just can't keep up. And Bucky isn't helping. Sam is constantly trying to do right by him and fix his own faults but it only makes him bitter. Because Bucky doesn't seem to want to do the same. And everyday it gets worst due to bottling up his emotions.

One day, Bucky does something very out of line in Sam's eyes. So much so he actually calls Buck out. And all hell breaks loose. Sam and Bucky at each other's throats. But they both take it a step too far.

Sam packs his stuff and leaves that night. Tells Bucky they are done, don't call him unless it's about his kid.

And the rest of the story is about Sam working on himself and getting proper Therapy. Finding better ways to handle these situations and actually giving himself some love. Looking back on his past and how he could use that to do better moving forward. He also gets to learn to be a father in the mix.

And because I'm a sucker for a happy ending and shit.....Bucky works on himself as well(off screen for the most part because this is about Sam). And after a while the two come together to work out their issues. First to become better coparents to their child. And then they come around to work on their romantic relationship.

Y'all I wanna write this. I truly do cause like......Omg. I live for Papa Sam and SamBucky with the good Metal Health.
