Sotto la superficie delle strade in alcune zone della Turchia, una rete di tunnel ospitava un tempo migliaia di abitanti in cerca di riparo, in fuga dagli invasori e dalle persecuzioni religiose. Il Paese è noto per le sue città sotterranee, in particolare la grande città di Derinkuyu, che poteva ospitare oltre 20.000 persone. Sebbene non sia stato ancora completamente scavato, i dati attuali indicano che l’insediamento di 11 piani misura circa 185 metri quadrati, con un potenziale di oltre 465 metri quadrati ancora inesplorati. Ma c’è una novità: da quest’estate, gli archeologi che stanno studiando un sito a circa 240 km a ovest dell’antico santuario sotterraneo ritengono di aver portato alla luce una delle città sotterranee più grandi e più avanzate finora realizzate. Secondo quanto riferito, la rete a più livelli risale all’ottavo secolo. Hasan Uğuz, l’archeologo del Museo di Konya che dirige gli scavi, ha dichiarato che le squadre che lavorano sul posto non si aspettavano che l’insediamento coprisse un territorio così esteso. Oltre alle numerose stanze e sale, un passaggio particolarmente ampio è stato descritto come una sorta di “strada principale”. Le aree all’interno della struttura sono paragonate a palazzi per il grande comfort e per l’alta qualità della vita che la rete era in grado di sostenere, ben lontana quindi dall’idea di caverna primitiva che potremmo immaginare quando parliamo di abitazioni sotterranee. Il carattere raffinato dello spazio gli è valso il nome di Sarayini, che in turco significa, appunto, “palazzo”.

Non pensavamo che potesse estendersi su un’area così vasta”, ha dichiarato Uğuz all’agenzia Anadolu lo scorso agosto. “Gli anziani che vivono qui hanno detto di aver visitato questo luogo quando erano bambini e che si trattava di una città sotterranea molto estesa”. Uğuz ritiene che i lavori di scavo di quest’anno abbiano fatto la differenza nel determinare quanto fosse grande la città sotterranea.

Tra gli oggetti recuperati durante gli scavi ci sono ossa di animali e supporti per lampade. In una stanza particolare della rete sono stati trovati un tamburo a colonna e un oggetto posizionato come una pietra tombale.

I lavori di scavo a Sarayini sono in corso da due anni. Molte delle antiche città sotterranee portate alla luce in Turchia sono state scoperte solo negli ultimi anni e la maggior parte non è stata ancora esplorata a fondo. Studi preliminari hanno indicato che un complesso sotterraneo trovato nella regione turca di Neveshir potrebbe essere addirittura ancor più grande sia di Derinkuyu che di Sarayini, anche se gli archeologi non hanno ancora un quadro completo del sito. They awoke to the sound of her name being called.  “Captain!”  “Eva!”  “Boss!”  The cries came through the ship intercom system as they finally stirred.

Initially, Eva squirmed to try to tuck herself closer to him. 

Duty called.  “We’ve got to get up at some point, Eva,” Theron yawned.

Eva rolled slightly to prop herself up on his chest. “We finally get away from Odessen together, for the first time in six months.  Now you’re telling me I have to leave our bed without being prompted by shrieking because my crew is probably running around holding the wrong end of a servodriver.”

Theron stretched his arms out to the side.  “That, or Argo is having a fit wondering where we are.” 

“Theron, you’ve heard that baby cry.  We’d hear him from up here.”

He guffawed.  The baby was safely stowed with Bowdaar, who adored Little Girl’s even littler boy.  Eva’s maternity leave had abruptly ended when her boring excursion to Port Nowhere with Rass Ordo had launched her – and the Alliance – into a rescue of Ord Mantel.

Corso Riggs, of course, helped lead the charge.  Now everyone was due for some R&R, but Eva had again followed Theron’s example of …not quite stopping work. 

Eva dropped her head back down onto Theron’s chest. “You want to do this again sometime?”

“Of course.”

The ship’s intercom went off again, and another chorus of hails demanded Eva’s attention.  “They aren’t going to get quieter,” Theron told her as he kicked at the covers.

With a huff, Eva got to her feet and pulled on one of her robes, adding some layer of protection to the green and gold pajamas.  Then she smashed a finger into the intercom.   “Is something on fire?”

“No,” replied Corso.

“Bleeding to death?”

“No.”

“Why are you waking me up?” 

“We made it to Distilion.”

“I can’t believe you’re seriously naming it that.”  Risha’s eyeroll was nearly audible.

Theron sighed too.  He really shouldn’t have inspired her with the idea it was her mission to save all the wineries, distilleries, and other liquor-producing planets in the galaxy. 

Now she’d karking bought a planet, with the intended purpose of making a booze planet.  All the planetary beverages that had been taxed to death by the Eternal Empire?  Eva’s plan was to bring them all back, with the traditional brewers, in a haven dedicated to alcohol.  Distilion. 

The Voidhound’s long-lost fortune… was not that lost. 

Suddenly spry, Eva was a whirlwind as she assembled her clothes and popped into the fresher.  She did a record-time run of her routine and was out the door.

By the time Theron made it out to the lounge, where C2 passed him a cup of caf.  “Lana Beniko has just received the manifesto and bill of sale for the planet,” he dryly informed him.

Oh boy.

“You can’t just buy a planet and add it to the Alliance without any groundwork!”  Aghast, Lana nearly tossed her datapad as she wildly gestured in the Odessen conference room. 

Eva flashed a near-manic smile at her as Guss passed her a datapad.  “New Imperial land ordinance said I could so I did!”  Theron wasn’t sure if she was happier about the purchase or rattling Lana. 

“We have no established government there – it’s just being handed off to us ‘as is’ and we have no inkling as to what ‘as is’ means!” 

Eva’s wrist comm let out a squawk.  “Money fixes everything, Lana, as far as ex-Pub or Imp worlds go.  Go look at Rishi.  And good timing, Lana.  The seller is on the line.”  Eva added another holographic image to the Thief’s holo comm unit.  

A rough and tumble-looking Rodian appeared on the screen.  “Good day, Captain.  So happy you’ve come through for us financially.”    

“And I’d like you to come through for us regarding the infrastructure, or else some funds will remain in escrow,” Eva replied evenly, taking the cup of caf that C2 offered her. 

The Rodian’s snoot shriveled up for a moment.  “Fine.  Didn’t expect you to take the property entirely without a problem.  We have our share of separatist problems –”

“What sort of seps?” Corso asked, archly.

“Given this was an Imperial planet, probably those who wish to go to Republic.  Or at least the Alliance,” Akaavi said, leaning in the doorway.

“Minor sewage –”

“80% of the planet does not have indoor plumbing,” Eva read off the datapad.

“Occasional volcanic –”

“There’s a massive line of tectonic activity at the equator.”  Eva squinted at the numbers.  “Less volatile than the deep mining in Makeb, so I think we can work with that.”

“Don’t forget the parts of the lowlands that need a respirator due to the toxic waste burial sites from two wars ago.” Guss jabbed at the datapad. 

Eva pointedly looked up at her Rodian counterpart.  “Why would you sell this treasure trove?”

The Rodian sputtered, and then –

Theron nearly burst out laughing as he saw the internal crisis play out on the Rodian’s face.  He thought he was off-loading a cesspit on Eva, backed up by the data, but now he was wondering if he’d let it all go for too little – and now he’d always wonder, since the initial documents had been inked – with real ink, knowing her. 

Some things were worth more than the credits. 

“I… I work hard to make a better life for my Wookiee.” He mumbled as he tried collect himslf.

Guss perked up.  “That your honey name for tall, shiny, and intimidating over there?”  He pointed at the bounty hunter next to him (not a Mandalorian, but he certainly had the disposition down pat). 

“No, my Wookiee.  Kawrog,” the Rodian replied.  He visibly untensed and the face was unscrunched.  “More accurate to say I’m his fourth pet cat or something.  He’s 152 now.”

Eva thumbed toward the general direction of the crew quarters.  “Bowie’s celebrating 215 later this year.  Whenever the Naboo Food Festival is.”

“Oh, he enjoys that too?  Kawrog is a snob now that he’s been –”

Somehow, Wookiees and smugglers always worked things out.

Gli occhi appesantiti iniziano a chiudersi. È arrivato il momento. Chiudo il libro che sto leggendo e, come ogni domenica mattina, lascio che il sonno faccia il suo corso. Decido di dargli una mano, mi giro sul fianco e con una gamba abbraccio il cuscino al centro del letto. Il vestitino messo per cercare di rimanere fresca dopo la doccia sale scoprendomi la coscia ma lo lascio stare, troppo stanca al solo pensiero di alzare un arto che sembra pesare il doppio del solito. Morfeo mi accoglie fra le sue braccia e il tanto agognato sonno, finalmente, si impadronisce di me. 

Lo avverto, inconsciamente, fissarmi dal lato destro del mio letto. Il suo sguardo va ovunque e mi fa muovere con irrequietezza mentre continuo a perdermi in un dormire senza sogni. I suoi occhi diventano talmente insistenti da essere percepibili concretamente sulla mia pelle, una mano che mi accarezza e lascia brividi al suo passaggio. Gioca con la cavigliera, traccia il mio tatuaggio e risale fino all'orlo del vestito rubato a mia madre. 

Lo scosta scoprendo l'intimo nero, il suo colore preferito. Sapevo sarebbe venuto a trovarmi. 

Il suo viaggio continua fino ad arrivare alla mia guancia, si piega di fianco al letto e si sporge su di me. "Che disperata che sei, mi aspetti sempre" mi sussurra all'orecchio prima di lasciare una scia di baci impercettibili dal mento fino alla parte di seno lasciata visibile dallo scollo del vestito. Lo sento sempre più frenetico nello spostare le spalline per proseguire con quelli che, da baci, sono diventati morsi. Man mano che scende ne aumenta la stretta, fino a lasciare il segno proprio sopra l'elastico di quel tessuto nero che lo separa dalla sua meta. 

L'ultimo ostacolo. 

Ma lui è di se stesso e nessun altro, non concede un secondo in più. Spostando le mutandine di lato si prende quello che vuole, come vuole, finché non ottiene ciò per cui è venuto. Come arriva va via.

Il vestito spostato, l'intimo umido e un bigliettino stropicciato mi danno il secondo buongiorno della giornata. Un po' più amaro e irraggiungibile del primo.

"Ci vediamo, alla prossima"

Forse il sonno non era poi così privo di sogni.

Francamente, continuo a chiedermi quale sia il segreto che custodisca il fascino di un dipinto. E non basta: mi affaccio sullo stesso interrogativo anche nel caso di alcune immagini fotografiche. Talvolta, mi è parso di poter sciogliere il mistero, scoprendo le opere dal vivo. Eppure, l'impressione di essere condizionato dal luogo che ospita la rappresentazione artistica - cattedrali e sale museali - m'ha fatto spesso recedere dall'iniziale entusiasmo. No. La domanda impone una ricerca complessa: il kantiano giudizio di gusto affonda le radici gettandosi tra le stratificazioni innumerevoli delle storie soggettive, sostrati che ciascuno di noi conosce solo in minima parte. Ma le "storie" sono anche collettive e diffuse e intergenerazionali. Seguono tortuose gallerie sotterranee. Un esempio. Molti di noi sono attratti dalla pittura impressionista che, deprecata al suo apparire nella seconda metà dell'800, s'è imposta trovando apprezzamenti unanimi nel corso del XX secolo. Così, in quella traccia si collocano le atmosfere noir di certa fotografia. E quelle di una grande stanza nella penombra o di un vicolo colpito da una fugace luce pomeridiana. E alcuni suoni e odori che suscitano immagini. Perfino lo stile dei fumetti s'intreccia con l'attrattività dei dipinti impressionisti, forse essendo proprio quello all'origine di questa predilezione e delle sue conseguenze. Se è così, come non includere alcuni cartoon e il cinema? Si tratta di soglie di conoscenza sensoriale attraversate e sigillate nella memoria. Ritornano, per vie inconsuete. Salve, vorrei parlarle di un problema che mi attanaglia ormai da anni e, nel caso, vorrei chiederle qualche indicazione se ne è a conoscenza.

L'acufene. Dopo aver eseguito diversi test audiometrici e vestibolari durante il corso del tempo, da poco ho iniziato un nuovo percorso trovando collegamento per l'altro problema che mi occupa la testa ovvero i giramenti di testa forse dovuti alla contrazione della cervicale.

Vorrei sapere, qualora possibile, se ha mai avuto esperienze con persone aventi acufene. Per quanto mi riguarda tutti gli otorini che mi hanno controllato mi hanno sempre detto di non avere niente nell'apparato uditivo e che probabilmente la causa è altrove.

Sono anni ormai che non so più cos'è il vero silenzio...

I think when you start working as an artist it can be difficult to understand who you are specifically. This is a process, but it is much easier to work backwards from who you are not. And it's something I've always found very strong: working backwards like this. It gives you a clearer picture of who you are as an individual and as an artist.

La libreria-labirinto, Dujiangyan (Cina), che ricorda le opere di Escher, è stata realizzata dagli architetti dello studio X+Living di Shanghai.

Lo studio che ha realizzato l’edificio ha preso ispirazione dal paesaggio della zona: il sistema di irrigazione del Dujiangyan, costruito attorno al 250 a.C. e oggi nell’elenco dei patrimoni dell’UNESCO, devia parte dell’acqua del fiume Min in un acquedotto che si dirige verso Chengdu, modificando il territorio a seconda delle necessità.

Nel reparto di letteratura centrale, i designer hanno utilizzato il soffitto a specchio per espandere visivamente la duttilità spaziale e creare un’atmosfera aperta e alta.

I corridoi e i passaggi tra una stanza e l’altra sembrano riprodurre questo sistema antichissimo di canali. La struttura delle colonne piene di libri riprende le foreste in bambù, così come il pavimento nero specchiato ricorda il letto del fiume Min e le panche in legno nei corridoi e nelle sale richiamano le tipiche imbarcazioni che navigano lungo il corso d’acqua.
