Every so often I think about this xkcd and get mad about how dumb it is.

When a child asks why the sky is blue, responding that air is blue is literally not an answer. Air being blue, in the daytime, under certain lighting conditions, is what the sky being blue means. You've conveyed zero information.

I can think of three ways the child might respond:

They may notice that you've given a vacuous answer that taught them nothing, even if they don't have the conceptual vocabulary to articulate this, and follow up with "Why is air blue?" At that point you can either refuse to answer, or try to explain Rayleigh scattering after all.

The child might accept "because air is blue" as an answer, not realizing that that's just a restatement of the question in the declarative mode. Obviously this isn't the child's fault; clear thinking needs to be taught. Instead you've taught the child to submissively swallow bullshit from alleged authorities. Congratulations, you're raising an HR drone, but probably not a scientist.

Perhaps most likely, the child might interpret "air is blue" in a way that makes it not vacuous but outright false. Air is blue in the same way that any clear medium is blue when light is scattered through it, but it's not blue in the way that, say, a piece of blue glass is, where objects viewed through the glass will look bluer. Actually, the opposite happens: the same scattering effect that makes the sky blue makes the sun, moon, and stars look redder. In fact, if the child had asked why a sunset is red, you could have said "because air is red" and it would be equally as accurate as your stupid non-answer about the blue sky. If the child doesn't next ask about the sunset and notice the contradiction, they'll be stuck with a false belief in their head generating inaccurate predictions for who knows how long.
