After reading Daisy Jones & The Six I remembered the movie Almost famous which is also about a fictitious band in the 1970s and how a band is struggling to get gigs, be famous and have a great record out.
It's directed by Cameron Crowe and it's based on some of his experiences, when he was a kid/younger. It is definerely a movie to watch.

WHY I LOVE ALMOST FAMOUS (2000) - A Film by Cameron Crowe-
I think it would be most appropriate if I debuted (if you will) talking about one of my favourite films, though that title shouldn’t have a hefty weight to it. I fell in love with this film a while back, in a moment where the soul craved an escape into a 70s rock scene, & it landed in the best place. Last year, I watched this film- & I wish it was an exaggeration- around 50 times. Whenever a pick me up was needed, I sought it out. Why? That’s what I’ll talk about now~
Where to start? The favourite thing is easily the music, all of it just fits into place. It is elevating, & gives you such a good taster for what that era had to offer, especially to someone who might not know a lot about the 70s but wants to learn- the soundtrack is highly recommended. For those of us who already know a bit, it was a nice toasty reminder of the best songs that fit into each mood of the film, & reminded you to just slip those songs back into your playlists. Easily, if the music doesn’t feel like your vibe, I feel like the film kind of slips away a bit, but stick with it! I think there is something highly beautiful about the characters that I’m going to leave you to discover, because tbh, I don’t want to talk about them all. However honourable mention to fringe guy (Ed) who spills his guts on the shaky plane, I got you babe, Sonny & Cher style. Also holy mother of fuck! The amount of just amazing actors in this film…where do I begin? Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup (he is also in another favourite of mine; 20th Century Women- maybe I’ll write about it; we won’t mention Alien Covenant…), Patrick Fugit (love his surname), Anna Paquin (honourable Trick ‘r Treat mention?), Zooey Deschanel (who’s that girl?), Jason Lee (I don’t have to mention his career), Philip Seymour Hoffman, Frances McDormand, bloody Jimmy Fallon, Fairuza Balk, Noah Taylor (submarine man), Rainn Wilson, Eric fucking Stonestreet just showing up outta nowhere, same as Nick Swardson (bowie!!!) & Susan Yeagley (you have a good day) just casually being there for 2 seconds. Ok I’ll stop geeking out for no reason, it’s just exciting!
I think I’m gonna just dive in. This film is special to me because of the way it changed me. I always daydreamed this idea of what I wanted to be like, & then I saw Penny Lane for the first time, & I watched in awe, because she is everything I’ve always wanted to be. & it made me realise that nothing is stopping me, I can be extroverted & talk to people. It doesn’t cost much to open yourself up like that, & to be honest her character isn’t perfect, she is flawed, but in the ways I am, which reminded me to be more gentle with myself, & also it puts everything into perspective. Penny is lonely, she is “surrounded” by people, but in reality none are there for her, she is there for everyone. When it comes to shedding this persona she has crafted, no one wants to hold the girl underneath it all, apart from William, who is the only person who genuinely loves her. She to others is a means of time-passing entertainment, while she?- a young girl who’s influenced, falls in love with everything, she is incredibly perceptive & though she acts tough, she gets heartbroken & falls apart like all girls do at 16, she was a victim of a power-play relationship; we could deepen on that, but at the moment I want it to be surface level, this was the 70s, & it was incredibly common & not spoken of, all hush hush. I think the most heart-breaking scene to me is her birthday scene, this is cut out & in the extended versions, but to sum up: it’s right before the ‘what kind of beer?’ scene, & the façade is coming to an end, everyone is getting ready for the next adventure, & Penny doesn’t know where else to go. She just assumed she’d be with Russel, & as she cuts more cake & asks anyone if they want any more, everyone starts quietening around her; she practically asks a void, then loses her voice, & the dawning reminder that she has to start leaving enters her mind. She half smiles through this whole realisation, but you can see her heart start to crack under it all. She was just a pawn in their game, they knew this, let her think otherwise, & it just reminds me of all those times of suddenly feeling like the place you knew so well wasn’t shaped for you anymore, & you start to outgrown it, or more, it starts to outgrow you, & you lose your footing. I think this scene changed my perception of Penny’s character for me a lot. Initially watching the film I star-gazingly watched her, but as I got older & paid attention to the small moments that valued a lot in her character, I realised her whole act is just that, an act. & there’s a frightened young girl who wants to also be just as loved as this Penny Lane, Lady Goodman, & she is the true person who is only ever shown to William. I do want to mention, I don’t think William or Russel is a fit for Penny, I think, though William’s love is more authentic, he is young, & regardless of if he realises, he won’t benefit her much. I do think he loved her for herself rather than what she could be for him like Russel does, but I think Penny needs someone who isn’t involved in all of that rock n roll life. Last thing to mention with Penny Lane naturally is her clothes, I’ve also purchased an afghan coat that I wear every winter, & it makes me live out my best Penny Lane dreams. But I’ve read a LOT about what the costume designer (Betsy Heimann) has said about how Penny Lane’s clothes were fashioned. & I read a lot about how the coat was more than a coat, it symbolises her ferocity & strength when it’s on, a shell, without it she is wearing not much material, she is bare, & that is the real Lady Goodman underneath it all. However I will say I love that the fur on the coat is actually an Urban Outfitters rug that has been dyed a ton. I wish I could have that coat…one day.
I think we have to talk about William, doy. I think I also relate to him a lot, I also think he & Penny are so much more similar than he realises, because she is living in the world he wants to, but she is just as much an outsider, it’s all about how you present yourselves in those environments. William is playing us, the audience, he goes through the same motions of awe & admiration at this incredible life that happens on the road, it’s jolly & warm in the beginning, he is excited to be a part of something at first, not realising he doesn’t fit in with their views of the world, as Lester Bangs states, he is ‘uncool’, which he feels (we could argue that then means as the audience that we too are uncool spectators of their lives just like him; important to consider that Cameron Crowe wrote the film basically about his life as a rock journalist, so his POV is our POV). What even does ‘cool’ mean to each & every person? Something different, I think it’s not such an argument to make about William’s coolness, but instead to consider what the rock n rollers think cool is, which is themselves, William is a dorky guy who does journalism & carrier a tape recorder around with a notebook glued to his palm. Things to consider guys. Aside from his outside not fitting in (maybe a mullet would fix it?) he also actively stands outside from what they are doing, because he is there to watch them, but you can feel that sense of wanting to be them by the way he looks at them. I think I like William’s character because I also think he goes through the different stages of being with musicians, it’s so cool at first, as Lester Bangs says, ‘they make you feel cool’ & like he is their friend, but he is not. & I appreciate his innocent & honest outlook on all of it, sometimes he kind of seems like the kind of person who is at the wrong place at the wrong time, he just is there as a stepping stone, then gets used up like Penny. I will be honest, I don’t know much to say about William now, maybe because I left it for a bit & came back so my train of thought on William has strayed. But also, he is 15, & so I don’t really know how to judge a character as much when they’re half-baked as people (not half-baked characters- 15 is just so young, you’re so unfinished). I rather just appreciate his views, & that he doesn’t let them corrupt his innocence as much, unless you account the band-aids all sharing the room with him…
I think without a doubt, the best & most overlooked character is Lester Bangs, he says some things that just always light up my perception of everything. He is an incredible character. We don’t know MUCH about him personally, though he is a big music connoisseur, so maybe that really is all he is. But the scene with him in the café with William (lol also at the ‘I don’t have time to sit around & talk to my many fans’), he says something I think, if anything is to be taken from this film, it is this line: ‘be honest & unmerciful’, go headstrong into the world, be soft when the moments call, but if you’re honest & open, then you’re doing something right (with moderation of course). I think so much could be said about this great film, & to be honest cutting it short to this feels unfinished, maybe I’ll add stuff on later as it goes on. But I think it’s something everyone should really watch when they need to be taken away. It’s an easy film to follow, & I think it will mean either too much to some people, or others won’t find it a necessary watch. Whatever floats your boat?
I highly doubt anyone will see this, I am writing to clear my mind which is always so full of words. I watch so many films all the time, & I love to talk about them. Having an open space to just call out into any abyss (which is better I know nothing about where this is going to) feels like conversation enough. I’ll maybe write more, but in reality I just need to push forward & see how I can articulate my words in a better format & way, but for now. Diary entry style should work for me. That’s all. Thanks spooky!
P.S. I am more of an avid horror film fan, but I can be diverse!

Was watching my favorite movie, Almost Famous, like a week or two ago. First of all, I'd just like to say, I could blog about this movie all fucking day, every fucking day, and intend to eventually (because I'm a masochist and like a challenge, damnit) do a post on every single Led Zeppelin reference that I could find in the movie (and there. Are. A lot. Probably literally more than there is of any other band or artist. For realsies), as well as an entire post of its own doing a character analysis of Vic, the Led Zeppelin fan (because I feel like he matters a lot more than his maybe two minutes of total screentime might suggest). But anyway...
So, I'm watching the director's cut, like I usually do (the theatrical cut just doesn't do it for me anymore), and there's one scene that (I'm pretty sure?) didn't make it into the regular cut of the film, but...like...
So, it's near the end of the movie, and Russell, the lead guitarist of the fictional band Stillwater, is having a conversation with the band's lead singer, Jeff, after butting heads with him for the entire movie and both of them coming to terms with the fact that...well...they don't like each other very much. And they're discussing whether it really matters if they like each other or not, and I think it's Jeff who says something like he thinks them liking each other might have been a detriment to the band, if anything, and how he's heard that all of the great duos hate each other or don't like each other or don't get along or whatever. Which, you know, cool, is true for maybe some of the most highly regarded rock groups (the Davies brothers in The Kinks, Joey Ramone and Johnny Ramone, and even Lennon and McCartney by the time The Beatles ended), clearly not all of them, though, but you know, hyperbole and all that. The real kicker, though? The fucking irony in that assertion, that none of the great duos in music get along? You know what song is playing in the background while they're talking about this?
"The [motherfucking] Rain Song", that's what. Like...uh...Jeff...you hear that song that's playing right now? Actually, probably not, since it might not be playing in-universe at that moment, though in Almost Famous it's sometimes hard to tell the diagetic (sp?) from non-diagetic music. But...like..."The Rain Song" is playing. Your argument is invalid, Jeff. Do you have any idea. Any fucking idea, Jeff, how much the duo responsible for that song (both in the writing and, quite possibly, the subject matter itself) don't hate each other? Like, pretty much the polar opposite of hate each other? Like, whether or not you believe that Page and Plant ever touched each other's no-no bits, what's not really up for debate is that those two men love each other like woah, whatever the nature of that love may be, doesn't matter, they are, for all intents and purposes, fucking married, they've both said so themselves. Yes, even James Patrick "No-Homo" Page.
I think Cameron Crowe definitely did that on purpose, and I appreciate the irony in the juxtaposition between the dialogue and the background music, is I guess what I'm saying. Listen, he was given special permission from the guys themselves to use a handful of Led Zeppelin's songs in his movie, he wasn't just going to slap them on any old scene all willy-nilly.

Vi grunted as Ran buried themself into her chest. The initial shock didn't stay long though and Vi quickly wrapped her arms around them. "I'm here," She repeated and let out a sigh of relief as she shut her eyes. "Why wouldn't I be here?" She asked, hoping that would be enough to initiate asking about Ran's dream without straight up asking about it. There was a long pause before Vi tilted her head to gently press against Ran. "You know, you weren't the only one to have a nightmare. I had one too. I was back at Stillwater and I heard...I heard that damn metal metal crowbar bouncing against the floor." Vi trembled a little but she tried to keep herself strong. Her intention was to distract Ran but she had unintentionally scared herself again.
The fighter let out a shaky breath and shook her head. "You know what happens from there. I don't wanna repeat myself," She mumbled and tightened her grip on her lover again, just to keep herself grounded. "How about we go bake cookies? Sleeping's overated, yeah? A tray of nice, warm cookies would hit the spot, don't you think?" Vi suggested. She certainly wasn't going to go to sleep again, not after that and she'd prefer that Ran be by her side while she did anything but sleep. "We can even watch some corny ass show? Or a movie? Anything."

Rainy day – arcane women x gn reader
Characters: gn reader with Vi, Caitlyn, Sevika and Jinx.
Tumblr media
No warnings, just fluff. Things to do on a rainy day with them. This is the kind of stuff I write when I’m feeling gloomy.
Note: I might repost this once or twice if it doesn't show up in the tags. The issue where my posts keep dissapearing persists.
Vi – movie night
Tumblr media
Vi doesn’t like the rain all that much. She can’t really go anywhere without getting soaked and she especially hates being mildly damp afterwards for the rest of the day. Rainy days are for spending indoors where it’s nice and dry.
She’s also not the type to bring an umbrella when it might rain. What if it doesn’t rain? Then you’re just carrying the stupid thing around all day for no reason. Thus, the poor umbrella is often left to gather dust at home.
The first time you’re both stuck indoors on a rainy day, she gets unusually excited. You thought she hated the rain, but suddenly she’s running around your home, doing what exactly?
Turns out she’s gathering snacks, pillows, blankets, drinks, etcetera. Asks you to please sit and stay put on the couch while she gets everything ready.
When she’s satisfied with her preparations, she’ll plop down beside you on the couch and wrap you both in a soft blanket. She’s got a huge grin on her face.
You ask her what’s going on and she tells you all about how she has been waiting for a day like this to spend with you. Just the two of you, sheltered from the rain in your home, snuggled up on the couch with enough snacks and drinks to last you a week. Nothing better to do than enjoy each other’s company and watch random movies until you fall asleep.
When she was younger, rainy days in the undercity were often spent like that too, albeit much simpler. Just one blanket and one pillow, only a small snack, no movies but maybe a fun book or some music to listen to. She has fond memories of those cosy days.
Her time in Stillwater ruined rainy days for her. When it rained, the water would just leak through the floors and the walls and make everything around her cold and damp. No blankets, no snacks, no soft pillows. No comfort.
Now, she wants to make new happy memories. Rainy days can be fun again, especially when you’re there with her.
After only 2 movies, she fallls asleep on you. The sound of the rain had proven to be too soothing, combined with the pile of pillows and blankets on the couch. And your presence, of course.
Caitlyn – watching the rain
Tumblr media
(sorry but I couldn't not use that gif)
Caitlyn loves the sound of rain. When she was younger and it would rain, she’d get an umbrella and just walk around Piltover, enjoying the empty streets and the relaxing sounds of the city in the rain.
Unlike Vi, she’s the type of person to always bring an umbrella if there’s a chance it might rain. She doesn’t want either of you to get soaked. Especially you, because you always look so sad when you get caught in the rain.
On a lazy Saturday, you two were planning on going out in the afternoon. Some unexpected rain meant you sadly had to change your plans.
While you were racking your brains trying to come up with indoor activities (like going to coffee shops, cafés, the library), Caitlyn had already made up her mind. She wanted you to stay indoors and just enjoy the rain together.
She takes you up to her room and to the bay window she has, because of course she has a window like that in the big, shiny house she lives in!
You two make yourselves comfortable with some pillows and blankets and cuddle up to each other. It’s surprisingly cosy, but you have to be careful not to move too much or you might fall onto the floor.
You ask if she wants to put on some music but she declines. She says the sound of your breathing combined with the rain is the most beautiful sound and the only thing she wants to hear right now.
So you just lay there, arms around each other, watching the rain fall on the streets below. Listening to the drops hit the roof and the window.
It’s simple and it’s peaceful but above all, Caitlyn just loves that you are with her to enjoy it.
Sevika – sharing an umbrella
Tumblr media
It had been a long day at work for you. Your feet felt sore and you just wanted to lay down and get some rest.
But once you open the door to go home, you realize it’s pouring outside. And you didn’t bring your umbrella. There was no way you were going to arrive home without getting all of your clothes completely soaking wet.
You just stare out at the streets for a moment, at the muddy puddles and water pouring down the roofs. Maybe to mentally prepare yourself for the dreadful walk to come.
But suddenly, you hear a short whistle to your right. You turn around and there she is.
Sevika, leaning against a wall, partially obscured by a shadow. Above her head, your other saviour: your umbrella.
She walks over to you, a light smirk on her face as she stands in front of you.
“You forgot this.” she says, holding the umbrella above the both of you.
Once the surprise wears off, you try and take the umbrella from her but she won’t let you. Instead, she places a hand on your back and guides you out onto the street, keeping you both dry with the umbrella.
“Let’s go home.”
She walks you all the way back home, expertly keeping you dry but getting herself a bit wet in the process. The umbrella just isn’t quite big enough to keep you both dry, but she tries her best.
People on the street turn to look at you. It makes you a little uncomfortable, until you realize they’re probably just jealous that they’re not getting escorted home by the scariest – and most beautiful – lady in the entire Undercity.
Jinx – getting soaked
Tumblr media
Jinx loves the rain. Whether she’s indoors looking outside and listening to it or she’s outside, with or without an umbrella. She just loves the way the rain looks and sounds and feels. It’s refreshing, it’s exciting.
She might take an umbrella with her, but she probably won’t. She doesn’t mind getting wet, it’s all part of the fun. It’s like a shower, but everywhere at once!
So when you spend a day with her and it starts raining, you’re not surprised when she asks if you want to go outside with her.
You get ready to go out in the rain. Grab your boots, your raincoat, your umbrella. Jinx is already long gone by the time you’re ready.
So you go outside and close the door behind you, holding your umbrella so you don’t get too wet. You call out to Jinx, but you can’t see her.
Until she appears behind you!
And steals your umbrella. She runs away, encouraging you to chase after her.
You run through the streets of the undercity together, Jinx taunting you with your umbrella the whole time. The hood of your raincoat flies off at some point and your hair gets all wet.
Finally, you manage to catch her, but only because she let you catch her. You get the umbrella back from her, but she stops you before you can open it.
She asks you if you’re having fun. And yes, you are!
“Isn’t this fun? To just run around and get soaked? Doesn't if feel amazing?”
Then she grabs you by the hands and spins you in circles until you’re both dizzy.
You spend a bit more time outside together in the rain. And you get it now. When you want to get soaked, when you choose to do so, it’s a lot more fun than getting caught in the rain when you’re not prepared for it.
Notes: it’s not even fall yet and I’m already in the mood. Give me summer rain. I need it!

We were sitting down watching Almost Famous and a joint was being passed around the room. From hand to hand, treating it as though it were a delicacy; something sacred. No bad vibes here, just a movie and some good people. A soft yellow light was being thrown into the room from the kitchen. "So what's the meaning of all this anyway? It's just some fucking groupie. Who picked this!? I fucking know it was Danielle, right?" Max yelled to the room and the rest of us chuckled. "It's not about 'just some groupie', her name is Penny Lane, and the movie is about the boy William's experience travelling with the band, Stillwater, and meeting all these wild Rock 'n' Roll characters." Danielle replied, she took a quick hit from the joint and passed it on to Denise. "So I guess you could say he was almost famous." I chipped in and the room erupted. It was my time to shine and I seized it. With the dense smell of burning marijuana, that subtle yellow light peeking into the room from the kitchen, and the glow off of the massive TV screen gave the moment an almost surreal quality, like the kind of thing that plays out in the movie you chucked on to watch with a group of your friends. You think these nights are going to last forever, because why wouldn't they? You're young and time is the longest thing you'll ever know. Such sage wisdom from your favourite cousin, the one that sells you a quarter ounce of the good shit. Until those days do stop, and your cousin gets put away for a couple of years because he gets baked and sells to some sleazy fucking undercover cop. And your friends? Where the fuck are they? Nevermind. That's for later. We'll get there...

Were you to pitch me on a Matt Damon film where an oil rig worker must go to France to exonerate his daughter of a crime she didn't commit and solve the mystery of who murdered her lover, I would probably predict that Damon woke up to find gray in his beard and decided he needed to kick off his own version of the Taken franchise.
I would also be down for that sort of movie. There is pleasure in watching a peaceful man snap, and revenge is best served in the pursuit of vigilante justice. And so sitting down to watch Stillwater, I was so ready for a film with this premise that apparently got a standing ovation at Cannes. Stillwater is none of this.
Instead of a tight action thriller about redneck father using his genetic firearms proficiency to make the French understand that sheer benevolence of the American public is the only thing preventing the carpet bombing of Paris, we got something much more emotionally intelligent. Through Subtle performances, sophisticated writing, and Stillwater presents a thoughtful narrative exploring values of family, betrayal, second chances, and the nature of self sabotage.
This is a modern The Third Man of sorts, intermixed with the main thread of a touching personal drama of a father looking for a family. I felt so strongly for the characters by the end of it that I was wholly unbothered by runtime or pacing. This is a very realistic film, and the connection it forges with the audience takes no shortcuts, every emotional response feeling very earned and never hollow.
Matt Damon is just a good actor, and he really shines as a Pickup truck driving redneck thrust into the hostile atmosphere of French society, listening to country music in the terrible little French car he drives as he fails to solve the case despite his best efforts.
This is a film with a mystery the protagonist never fully solves himself, even as he tries to understand why he's a failure in all other parts of his life. It's a film about loss at one's own hands. There's so much for me to digest from it, and this was quite the pleasant surprise for a film I knew very little about outside of the premise.
Go watch it if you can, a future classic.
