The cane in his 1st ascension (along with the modernizing Japan background) rocks, because it looks like it's based off of an anecdote from his old age, about him walking with his grandson when the kid mouths off at some yakuza walking by, who naturally get mad at that. The kid hides behind his grandpa here, who then tosses away his cane and straightens up, which was apparently enough to frighten off the yakuza guys. Looking at this guys face and stance, I can believe that.
Being one of the few surviving members of the Shinsengumi, he, along with Hajime (who at that point changed his name to Fujita Goro), would set up the Grave of the Shinsengumi as a memorial to their fallen comrades, and Shinpachi would later go on to write memoirs about his time in the corps.

[still thinking about bare ass baby] like. matako going to find him just solidifies the takasugi -> gintoki -> shouyou mirroring path. shouyou thinking gintoki's kids are what gintoki was to him (killed me) -> kihetai over and over paralleled with yorozuya inexplicably more than any other ~found family group* -> matako does for sugi what gintoki does for shouyou. sugi becomes his own shouyou mirror. in the most insanely "you were loved by the ppl whose lives u changed" way u could give a reason for sugi of all chars to mirror his teacher

i really love how much your perspective on... basically everything inoue says to ryoma in ishin! changes on the second playthrough
knowing that he grassed "saito" up to kondo immediately and fucking PLAYS DUMB whenever he says something immediately suspect, and yet, through all of this, covers for his sorry ass at every turn, even knowing there's a real possibility ryoma would cut him down on the spot if he found out who he was
both of them bullshit each other so much through the whole game, and it makes me sad they didn't ever get to speak as equals with no false names attached

i know i'm asking alot of that one lil scene 😭 this is what happens when you fall for a character with little screen time. learn from me. no matter how much they draw you to them, DO NOT fall for the minor character! IT'S A TRAP

this is honestly one of my favorite, one of the the funniest, and one of the sadder moments in the event, Serizawa lambasting the others for being a bunch of backwater samurai playing at, and failing at, being friends, it’s so funny hearing it being phrased that way because he’s not fucking wrong, the shinsengumi were very close but also the spent so much of their time together killing each other or forcing each other to kill themselves, it’s so funnyfuckedup to look at that and go “yeah they were friends” and be right about it all! a bunch of crazed manslayers and genius swordsmen none of who knew how to interact with one another none of who were able to truly be with the others as they fell to battle or illness or their own blades, but who still, who still, in these seconds lives of theirs, chose to reach out once more to each other, to try and understand one another, to continue standing for the way of lives that they had lived.
Most of all, I love how Hijikata’s Bond CE puts it, the “Comrades who dashed through the ages together”.

hijikata when he stays up late at night realizing he once again fumbled the bag with gintoki after not understanding what gintoki was implying earlier and missed the chance to be with him
