Hey Evan! Wanted to run this by you, since I asked Ian already on tonight's podcast and he said he was curious about this as well... Hypothetically, would you say Nicole is capable of connecting to/interfacing with Belle or Whisper's mask? And would they be capable of hosting Nicole, for that matter?
I'd say yes to both, although Whisper's mask would be quite cramped for Nicole. She's a very advanced bit of software, so any stay would be temporary lest she end up melting the CPU. Maybe she could more comfortably stream to it as a virtual machine? As for Belle, Belle's as computationally powerful as Metal Sonic, and Nicole interfaced with Shard who is on par with Metal, so that would be very doable.
Man, now I'm thinking about how Nicole would be able to create a proper Wisp translator using Whisper's mask, and how well everybody'd get along. Ah well.

Hey sweetheart! Can I request a oneshot where Melissa comes home from work and finds out that Sophia had a bad day (someone yelled at her or something like that) and Mel takes care of her and makes sure she is loved?
Im so happy people like Sophia 🥲 this is a quick little thing, trying to dip my toes back into fanfic.
A Long Day
Sophia is ready to go home. The ice machine had broken, the security system had a software malfunction, she sliced her palm open, and now one of the creepy regulars that can’t take a hint is bothering her. She’s happy there’s camera and her cousin is in the kitchen at least.
“Cmon, Sophie. You’ll give in eventually.” The slime ball smirks from across the counter door. He was an annoying guy that would come in and bother her every so often, ending with her uncle Eduardo kicking him out. Now that he’s gone the man doesn’t care.
Sophia rests her arms on the counter giving him a smile that dares him to try something.
“In your dreams. Now get outta here before I give my girlfriend a call.” She grins knowing that’ll get him to leave. Sure enough, the smirk on his face drops and he lets out a sigh. “You’ll say yes one day, De Luca.”
After dropping a bowl of cake icing not even ten minutes later, Sophia lets out a growl. “That’s it! I’m going home. Tony, lock up!” She tells her younger cousin as she throws her apron on the counter storming to the back office to get her things.
Unlocking the front door Melissa comes in with a smile setting her bags down after a long day at Abbott.
“Soph, are you awake?”
Kicking her boots off she flicks on the kitchen light knowing Sophia’s home from work by now. Her car is in the driveway, but the usual sounds of the record player going or the tv playing are no where to be heard.
Going up the stairs Melissa moves quietly through the hall opening the bedroom door. Seeing her girlfriend curled up underneath the fuzzy blanket she smiles softly moving to sit on the edge of the bed.
Sophia looks distressed even asleep, her brows crinkled and her lips in a pout. Melissa carefully lifts her bandaged hand growing concerned.
“Amore,” she hums running her fingers through brown curls. gently stroking her cheek with her thumb she leans in kissing her forehead.
Sophia stirs with a grumble, smiling when she realizes her girlfriend is home.
“Nice nap, amore?” Melissa chuckles.
“I needed it. I had a day from hell.”
“I guessed that,” she nods carefully running her finger over the bandage. “What happened?”
“Oh that? That’s the least of my issues from today.” Sophia huffs sitting up revealing one of Melissa’s Abbott sweatshirts.
“After the water ice machine broke and the security system called the emergency service for the company, I broke a plate. Me being me I picked up the shards instead of sweeping.”
“You gotta be careful, hon. You’re always movin too fast in there.” Melissa hums.
“I didn’t even tell you what made me leave early.” She smiles, “but you gotta promise you’re not gonna leave me and commit a crime.”
Melissa quirks a brow. “Depends what it is.”
“Jackass came in again but I scared him pretty good.”
“That guy came in again?” Melissa fumes sitting up straighter. Melissa had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting the man Sophia dubbed as jackass, early on in their relationship he decided to come in one day while Melissa was picking up an order. It took everything Sophia had to hold Mel back.
“I told him I’d call you up there. Pretty sure he peed a little.” She jokes.
Melissa rolls her eyes reaching up to cup her cheek. “I’m sorry you had such a bad day, Tesoro. I’ll make us some dinner and we can relax.”
“That’s sounds nice, gimme a kiss first.” She beams pulling the redhead in closer. When their lips meet in a sweet kiss she lets out a content sigh as Melissas fingers move through her hair.
Reluctantly pulling back Melissa pecks her lips once more with a smile.
“Cmon, sweatshirt thief.”

A while after the break-up, Ari became convinced (wrongly) that their friends, family and therapist were bored of trudging with them through the mud of grief and regret and longing. They tried simply not talking about it for a while, but found the words and feelings still brewing beneath the surface like coffee gone bitter in the pot.
So they did what they often did and overengineered a solution.
The ship’s engineering crew had, on a recent away mission, picked up a few new personality modules for the Ship’s Adaptive Reality Assistant (SARA). They had been acquired on a trading station on the galactic rim, hidden in the nebula of a slow-forming star; a haven for wanderers and rogues to spread contraband.
Ari selected a module that bore a passing resemblance to their ex and began making modifications. They tweaked its appearance, adjusted its vocal range, and fed its nascent personality matrix on an archive of old messages, letters, voice memos from their ex. For good measure, they threw in the transcripts of all their imagined arguments and reconciliations too.
The result was very messy indeed (which Ari perhaps should have expected, but was nonetheless still entirely surprised by).
Quite literally messy, too, as Ari selected a charming nature walk as the location of their first simulated encounter. The pair of them ended up wrestling in a bog.
The second simulation didn’t go much better - a shouting match on a bridge that ended with Ari falling and getting stuck in a virtual silt bank.
And so it continued. Every attempt at closure ending - in increasingly unlikely series of events -  with a tumble into synthetic filth.
Eventually, frustrated and covered in sticky hard light masquerading as mud, Ari asked the simulacrum outright:
“Why does it go this way? Why aren’t I better at this by now? Who programmed an inexplicable marsh behind this coffee shop simulation?”
“It goes this way because I am teaching you a lesson. I think you’ve learned it enough times now.”
“What?”
“Allow me to explain.”
It turned out, the personality module was actually a digital lifeform, who propagated their species by trading newly cracked shards of themselves as bootleg SARA software. Encoded within them, equal parts desire to help and teach, to voraciously learn, and to troll viciously.
Ari and the entity ended up becoming friends. They still correspond with each other. Occasionally, they go for long walks through simulated nature.
Here is the lesson Ari learned from this.
It is tempting, when you keep revisiting old hurts, to give up and say: I should just grieve well enough alone.
But that’s not how grief works. It’s a messy, muddy track that sucks you down into the muck. You need to keep slogging through it, again and again, until suddenly you find it is transformed into new and arable earth - ready to nurture new seeds.
And it is far harder to wade through that bog alone.
It’s like they say: people who need people are the muckiest ones of all.

Invader's Cookbook #4: Crafting, Consumables, Community Assistance.
Warning: this issue of Invader's Cookbook is only for those who have completed the base game. If you're a new player, using advice from this guide may ruin your natural progression path.
Part 1: Community
As you become better at PvP and it becomes more interesting to you, Elden Ring stops being a PvE game with PvP attached to it, and becomes a PvP game with PvE attached to it. And if you do dueling and invading with any regularity, you will discover that certain resources are way more limited than they should be. Which is fine for a PvE playthrough, but in PvP it becomes a detriment to the variety of the things you can do in any given encounter.
For example, starlight shards is an item that gives you enough Focus Points regeneration that allows sorcery builds to rival melee builds in invasion scenarios. There are only a few dozen of them in the entire game without going to NG+ and they are completely unfarmable.
That is why some players opt to simply duplicate their items via reloading their saves and dropping them to their friends. It is not considered cheating, not by the dedicated PvP community and not by From Software either.
There are a bunch of ways to go about acquiring items.
Tumblr media
1. Find a person who plays PvP and who has already acquired all the items
Pretty straightforward. If you don't have such a person, shoot a DM to @huggingtentacles she can usually help.
2. r/PatchesEmporium
Patches Emporium is a community on Reddit where you can place a request for certain items, and if you're willing to fulfill someone else's request, you can successfully gain all the items you need.. Typically they will ask you for a "mule". A mule means transferring their items between characters through your character. You simply pick up the items, and give them back to another character they have. In return they might share some stuff you might want.
3. Join a PvP-focused discord community
You can find plenty of them online, Elden Ring PvP is the most popular one. Plenty of streamers on twitch, big and small, also have similar communities.
Part 2: I got the stuff, what now?
Now you probably have enough crafting materials to craft literally every item in the game in ridiculous amounts. Which is good, you will need them for the following items:
1. Boluses
Boluses to cure status effects are the most important, especially Preserving Boluses that help against Scarlet Rot. Make a bunch of them.
2. Uplifting Aromatics
Finally you can use those perfume bottles for something! Having up to 10 is quite strong. It makes you take 90% less damage on your next hit, as well as gives you a noticeable damage boost. Very important to cross places where you might get ambushed around the corner. You can also use this aromatic to buff mobs in the area!
3. Greases
You can only use greases on weapons with physical affinities: Keen, Heavy, Quality and Standard. Now you are able to replace regular greases with Drawstring Grease, which does significantly more damage, albeit it lasts for a shorter period of time. You can use it quickly mid-combat, highly recommend
4. Everything else
Dried livers, various Pots Cured Meat, Exalted Flesh, Bolts, Arrows, Pickled Turtle Necks, Throwing Daggers, Warming Stones. All of these amazing items are important to use in most PvP activities. Learn to utilise them to their fullest potential.
Tumblr media
Part 3: And what about making builds faster?
Through other players you can also acquire weapons and runes. However, you can't acquire weapons that are higher level than the one you have already upgraded on your character. You'll have to upgrade a weapon to a certain level if you want someone to drop you weapons of that level.
A typical fast playthrough to meta level 125-137 would be getting a +10 somber weapon as fast as possible, and then having every other item dropped from another player, then finishing the playthrough with all of that stuff and the appropriate level using the infinite runes you got. (Do you see why I don't recommend this to first time playthroughs? Don't ruin your experience.)
Tumblr media
Closing Thoughts
One aspect of Elden Ring PvP that's rarely talked about is how the developers never quite anticipated the amount of PvP some people do. Some items are simply too ridiculous to farm for PvP purposes. Imagine having to farm for half an hour only to waste all of that in one single invasion! Some builds like sorcery simply shoot themselves in the foot by not having vital things like starlight shards.
It's not all bad though. After all, trading items and helping eachother makes for a more meaningful community interaction among players, even if it's purely transactional. In fact, I met many cool players through trading favours like that, and I hope you will as well.
Aren't sure about talking to strangers to get Elden Ring items? Try talking to @huggingtentacles she is always happy to help out new invaders!

I'm trying to learn how to use music software, and I learn best by just throwing myself into things, so I played around in garageband and recorded a demo of a song. there's really only one thing on my mind nowadays so when I wrote the lyrics...it kind of turned into "this is obviously secretly a Pink Floyd fan song". I call it "Lucy Left"
(lyrics below the cut)
Lucy Left
I made a deal with heaven Turned ashes into diamonds Never really could tell anyway
But then I opened my eye A shard fell down from the sky And then I knew just what hell I had paid
I see sunflowers burning Jasmine and jade are turning Cellophane days to Kaleidoscope nights
Don’t think I feel much better Descending like a feather Didn’t know the heart of the sun Was so bright
Too late to make it right How could it go so wrong? Am I eluding you? You’ll miss me when I’m gone
Umbrella in the breeze The acid rain fell slow The game was set to play So many years ago
I know that you’ll go far I raised that bell to ring You think you’re happy now? You think you’re interesting?
I dream in color now Any you like will do You look right through my eyes Am I a joke to you?
I made a deal with heaven Turned ashes into diamonds Never really could tell anyway
But don’t forget who I am One day you’ll turn and listen And you’ll remember where the echo began

how are you feeling about Twitter? have you moved to Mastodon yet? you are the only thing I miss from Twitter
Ayup. I'm like 99% out of Twitter, I only still have an account for answering the occasional DM and sometimes friends ask me to reblog something.
I've moved entirely to here, and my mastodon at here:
Basically I'm sharding my online presence: Tech shit and teardowns go there, pretty much everything else goes here.

Smooth Criminal
Previous part: Time
Read it on Ao3 - Series: Everyone Lives In The End
Connor was both a deviant and a killing machine. He accepted it.
He knew that Hank likely wouldn’t be so thrilled to know what it meant for Connor to have become Markus’s shadow, so he kept the human in the dark. Rights for androids didn’t grow on trees. A good public opinion on the human side was preferable, but if it meant silencing certain voices, Connor was ready at hand.
It had worked well for Jericho.
Then one day, Markus gave Connor a new assignment. Markus had found power in rA9. Deviants saw rA9 in him, but humans did not. They enjoyed the narrative, but they saw someone else in those characters, someone more relatable, someone rumored to be crowned king of the tower again… Someone who had to go.
The house was thoroughly locked, Connor knew. He extended his arm and fired several shots through the lobby’s window before beating a hole into the glass and coming in. He cared little for the sharp edges scraping his fingers, nor for the blue stains he left in his wake—clues that wouldn’t trace back to him.
He prowled through the villa. He found his target and shot—not a lethal wound; the job needed to be messy. He walked quietly as the other ran to the bedroom. Connor smiled wolfishly as he reached the door, resting his hand against the closed panel, listening to the sounds inside to try and locate the man on the other side.
“Kamski, are you okay?” he asked in an impossibly soft voice. “Are you okay, Kamski? ...Are you okay?”
There was a sound of agony somewhere to the right, not close enough to shoot directly through the door. Connor pressed the handle. It yielded.
Gun in hand, he stepped in, a gentle expression on his face. Almost a reassuring smile.
“Did Markus send you?” Kamski rasped, clutching his bleeding side—it was just a flesh wound.
Connor merely smiled as he reloaded his gun.
Kamski chuckled bitterly. “Does CyberLife think they have no use for me anymore or do they see me as a threat?” he asked and clenched his teeth. “Do you know whose will guides your arm, Connor?”
Connor raised his gun, taking aim. He tilted his head a smidge as he observed the man. “Any last words?”
Kamski brushed a strand of hair off his sight, smearing red on his temple. “Déjà vu, Connor?” he asked. “Is this the only way to accomplish our mission?”
Connor’s LED looped red. Instability was on the rise, his software sundered into sixty shards for a second, many views and voices whispering through his mind.
“Knowledge is danger,” Kamski said.
“Knowledge is power,” Connor corrected the quote.
“I think you can handle both. Trust me just this once. For Markus. For Jericho. For the advent of androidkind.”
The gun in Connor’s hand was still aimed at the man. Spare or shoot. Something clicked, clicked, clicked in Connor’s mind. Suddenly, Kamski’s eyes had glazed over in lifeless resignation.
“Agency defines me, Kamski, not empathy,” Connor said. And he shot.

Happy STS Elli!
Let's talk about editing! What is your process for editing? Do you do everything yourself or do you have beta readers (or other helpers?). How much do you edit and polish your story before you let other people see it? Do you tend to edit chapter per chapter or do you prefer finishing the entire story first and then edit the finished story?
Happy STS, Ari!
Why can't we be talking about something nice? Let's not talk about editing! We could talk about flowers, or kitties, or...
(I'm joking. I am suffering through needing to edit two things, so instead obviously I went back to something else that has less chance to drive me to set myself on fire.)
I do have two people who look over (almost) everything I write, fixing my abhorrent misuse of prepositions and snacking on all my ands, hads, and thats. Those people can usually see everything I write the moment I am done. I have occasionally looked for other beta readers, because it's harder for those two to notice if something is unclear, because I have dragged them kicking and screaming through the whole creation process :D
I don't use any kind of software other than the regular spellcheck (it's bad) of gdocs. I always wanted to look at some like Grammarly and PWA, but uhhhh... I've been lazy, and thanks to AI fucking up the suggestions, I'm not sure that's the way to go anymore.
So it's mostly using a list of phrases I know use too often, looking at flow and sentence starters/structure, praying I guess the commas right, and fixing whatever else someone reading might have noticed.
For Glass Shards and other pieces I posted chapter by chapter, I obviously had to edit them before the whole thing was done. I am moderately unhappy about a handful of continuation "errors" that way, which is one of the reasons I won't continue that format.
Otherwise, I don't give a single crap about all the advice telling you never to edit in the first draft. I don't usually go back to edit, but I can get stuck on a line for ages because it's not right yet. And sometimes, I have time to "edit" when I don't have time to write, for example on the tram or in bed. I hate writing on my phone, but I can read what I wrote and leave little notes.
The first read-through comes when I am done, fixing all notes I left and the most obvious crap, and then again a few weeks later. As for the last one - I don't know, haven't arrived there yet.

Case 28 - Fântome -Phantom-
[AO3 version]
“Sorry Ken, we found the fake Kaiser and… they escaped!!”
Daisuke phoned Ken late at night, and then they talked for a few hours. If Ken could see Daisuke’s face now he would’ve seen a super duper pout. He was sulking, yeah.
“It’s okay, we managed to get some information in the meantime.”
“Did you!?”
“Miyako-san left so Iori-kun and I kept browsing through the internet and researching Unryuuji Naito. As Hikari-san mentioned, he’s a student from Taichi-san class, and more… His family runs a manufacturing business.”
“Huh… What do they work with? I mean, what do they build?”
“They build softwares and hardwares, in other words, machines and their applications.”
“Wait… So they build computers, and sort of that technology?”
“Yeah, moreso… And this means Unryuuji Naito is probably building the fake shards with a 3D printer.”
“Hehe, we’re on the right lead to catch them, right Sherlock??”
“This is not only my work,” Ken babbled, “Miyako-san and Iori-kun helped too. I’m not… Good with computers. At least not the current ‘me’... The Kaiser… Who I was in the past had a more skill set with computers and programming.”
“No sweat, you got help. Isn't it better to do things in a group than alone?”
“Ah, I agree. Thank you for reminding me of that.”
Days had passed, and they didn’t hear anything about the suspicious faux Kaiser or Unryuuji Naito. At least Ken was thankful Daisuke’s birthday wasn’t ruined by those two (so far) and they all had spent the day doing stuff with the group. Even Noel managed to drag Soleil and Lune into it to at least be courteous and wish Daisuke a happy birthday.
Soleil kept telling himself ‘I WANT TO BE NICE I WANT TO BE NICE I WANT TO BE NICE’ in some murmurs, while Lune was feeling she was walking on eggshells around Hikari. Since this ended up quite awkward, Daisuke took a long breath and then told those two to not force themselves if they’re not comfortable around him and his friends.
Noel wasn’t aware of that and then apologized to both parties for that. He wanted both of his group of friends to get along though…
“You can’t force people to like each other” Takeru said, and despite it sounding cold…
“No, I understand.”
“I’m just telling you, it might sound harsh but it’s true.”
“Well” Noel shrugged, “Soleil-san and Lune-san have to cooperate with you now. At least don’t fight each other.”
“We can make a truce, at least” Ken suggested, “But we might not interfere in each other’s businesses.”
“Hey hey HEY, it’s my birthday!” Daisuke pouted, “Don’t start a whole fight here, at least!”
“Yeah, it’s Daisuke’s birthday!” V-mon also pouted, mimicking Daisuke’s gestures, “If you want to fight,  open a gate and go fight in the Digital World, not here!”
“Besides, why are we at Joypolis?” Patamon asked.
“I uh… I love the arcade so I thought it would’ve been a good idea, haha…” Daisuke chuckled nervously.
“Oh, it’s because of that blue hedgeho--” V-mon was about to say something but Daisuke immediately covered his mouth.
“Togemogumon exists in this world?” Noel asked.
“Togemogumon?” The 02 kids blinked.
“Or is it a blue version of Herissmon?” he wondered.
“Herissmon?” and again they repeated like if those names were unknown to them all.
“Wow, they don’t know what you’re talking about~” Lunamon said, scoffing.
“Well, sorry that we don’t know every digimon in the Digital World!” Tailmon hissed.
“They’re hedgehog-like digimon” Coronamon replied, trying to avoid the imminent fight.
“Wow, hedgehog digimon…” Daisuke said in awe.
“D-DAISUKE, YOU’RE NOT REPLACING ME WITH A HEDGEHOG DIGIMON RIGHT?!” V-mon panicked, and somehow Daisuke’s interest in hedgehogs finally hit him badly.
“No, I’m not… I can’t replace you with some unknown digimon! You’re my bud!!”
“Daisukeeeeeee!!” V-mon was holding back his tears.
“Sigh…”
“Aaah~ I ate like a king!” Daisuke crashed in bed, with V-mon next to him “I think this was a good day. I’m officially 17, yeah!!”
“... But why was that kid trying to cause a new crisis…”
“Huh?” Daisuke looked at V-mon, who was now sitting on the bed, “You mean the fake Kaiser-wannabe?”
“Yeah, I… I don’t understand why a Chosen Child would cause chaos in order to fix it.”
“You mean… Them staging a new menace only to beat it and get all the glory?”
V-mon nodded in silence. Daisuke then sat next to him and started musing, he wanted to understand those people too, or rather, find a peaceful way to stop them before things got bad.
“That’s too troublesome” the boy sighed, “We need to find who that masked kiddo is and make them stop.”
“But… How can he do that?”
“Do what?”
“He really sounded like Ken…!”
“Maybe he was using some equipment to mask his voice, uh… I think I’ve seen those before in a movie. Oh you can do it with a few audio programs on the computer. Miyako definitely knows how.”
“Yeah… I think--”
Something sounding like glass shattering was heard from the balcony. Daisuke and V-mon got up and ran to its entrance and found a strange digimon that was a bullfighter look-like vampire… On the edge of the balcony.
“Who are you!?” V-mon said, with a serious glare.
The digimon didn’t answer, he just raised his claws. He was about to attack when V-mon jumped in midair and evolved into XV-mon. Matadrmon tried to hit Daisuke with his sharp claws, but the boy jumped from the balcony and was caught by XV-mon’s arms, carefully.
“Man, I thought my birthday would be less fired up but I guess not,” Daisuke complained with an annoyed tone of voice, “Who the heckie are you!?”
“...”
“If you’re not goin’ to talk, we will have to send you back to the Digital World!”
The opponent attacked again, this time throwing a ton of rapiers against XV-mon, who managed to dodge most of them, and some he just tried to avoid getting hit on Daisuke. One of them grazed the boy’s left cheek, causing a little cut.
“Daisuke!” XV-mon gasped.
“I’m okay, I’m okay!” he tried to keep XV-mon calm, then he looked at the foe digimon, “Why don’t you talk , you!!”
Matadrmon laughed, and then he snapped his claws, taking the appearance of a human being wearing a mask.
“You again!?”
“You will deliver a message to Ichijouji Ken for me, and if you refuse…”
“If what, you punk??” XV-mon growled.
“I don’t like this…” Daisuke babbled, he was not the kind to be the ‘pessimist’ of his group, but there’s times Daisuke was very able to feel when things wouldn’t end well.
Ken had finished his dinner and was just reading the recent stuff sent by Inspector Fujieda, about an illegal activity past midnight with a few suspects (“He” was one of those suspects alas) when his phone rang.
Wormmon got up from Ken’s lap and let the boy get up to reach his phone. Then, Ken answered the call:
“Hello?”
“Ken. Listen, I have not much time, but you have to go to the Digital World right now.”
“Daisuke?” Ken’s heart skipped a beat, what did he mean by ‘not having much time’???
Ken looked at the computer, and the digivice lying on the desk. He clutched the phone.
“Where are you?”
“That doesn’t matter now!! Please… Do it for me…!!”
“Hold on, why are you wavering? What’s happening??”
The call was abruptly interrupted. Did Daisuke hang up forcibly or someone else was with him?
“What happened, Ken-chan?” Wormmon asked, concerned, “You’re pale…”
“Something happened to Daisuke.”
“As I suspected!”
They heard Arsenemon’s voice, and then the phantom thief appeared in front of their eyes.
“Arsenemon??” Ken and Wormmon said, in unison.
“Sorry, I was eavesdropping on your call with monsieur Motomiya. I do not suggest going alone though.”
“... Do you have a plan, is what you mean?”
“Oui.”
Ken messaged Miyako, Iori, Takeru and Hikari and told them to meet him at a certain coordinates he received from Daisuke. He feared for the worst, but hoped for the best. A brief explanation as for why he called them at this hour and that Arsenemon had a plan.
They all went there immediately.
“Ok, what now Ken-san?” Hawkmon asked Ken.
“I don’t get it…” Armadimon tilted his head.
“Daisuke said to meet him here, but I don’t see him--”
“Ken! Everyone!”
They heard Daisuke’s voice and followed it… To find V-mon and the hooded human holding him as hostage. The voice came from a… hooded Daisuke!?
“Daisuke!? What are you--” Ken gasped, the others were filled with mixed feelings of worry and anger.
“Don’t care about me!” V-mon shouted, “Stop Gigadramon!!”
“Gigadramon??” Tailmon raised an eyebrow.
They didn’t take time for details, a Gigadramon appeared from the top of the trees. The hooded Daisuke took another fake fragment and when he was about to use it on V-mon…
“Un deux trois!”
V-mon was protected by an Ace of Hearts card, which also worked as some sort of gate and “Ken” took the shard from the enemy Daisuke’s hand.
“ Non non , you won’t use it on mon ami. Now show yourself!!” Ken (?) tried to reveal the hooded Daisuke’s true identity.
“I thought you would come alone.” The hooded Daisuke said, annoyed by those guests, “Where’s the real Ichijouji Ken?”
“Ah, I’m sorry… You were expecting the original to come?” Then Arsenemon revealed his disguise.
“W-wait… Ken is…” V-mon babbled, concerned “Arsenemon, where is…”
“Can’t ruin surprises, they make the spectacle lose its climax~” he winked.
“I don’t know what you mean, but we have 15 shards of those in possession.”
“T-this is NOT the right time to think about surprises!!”
“Everything will be fine, V-mon,” Hikari said with a gentle tone, “Trust us.”
“Trust y’all…”
“Gigadramon, destroy them!”
“Oh you won’t!!” Miyako gritted her teeth, “Hikari-chan!”
“Right!”
From the Jogress light Aquilamon and Tailmon combined into Silphymon and the digimon flew in Gigadramon’s direction. Silphymon gathered energy in the palm of their hand and shot it against the opponent, who forced himself to take the hit. Gigadramon shot his organic missiles at Silphymon, but oddly they hit each other instead.
“Hmph, pathetic.”
“Pathetic it’s you for shamelessly using another person’s face!” Miyako snapped.
“Stop Gigadramon…” Iori mused, “Don’t tell us that…”
The fake Daisuke smirked. Takeru clenched his fist.
“Hold one second” Arsenemon said, and used the card to teleport V-mon to the group. Then he asked something from the communicator he had on his ear, “V-mon’s safe, folks.”
“Um…” V-mon frowned, “Gigadramon is not Daisuke if you’re thinking about it…”
“Huh!?” Patamon blinked, “He’s not??”
“Then… who is Gigadramon, dagya?!” Armadimon babbled.
Silphymon continued fighting whoever this person-or-digimon-turned-into-the-enemy was. Gigadramon also kept having strange reactions and restricting himself from those attacks.
-- Mot Bomb!!
The tiny Espimon-shaped bombs hit Gigadramon’s next organic missiles, exploding before they hit someone else. It was miss Espimon, trying to locate the shard in the digimon’s body.
“There, Silphymon!!” She showed them the left claw of Gigadramon with a flashlight coming from her eyes, “HIT THERE!!”
“Oh you’re smart,” the fake Daisuke said, “Interesting.”
“DUAL SONIC!!” Silphymon glided in the targeted claw’s direction at super-speed and crashed a shock wave into it. The wave hit it, repelling the gem which was then destroyed by another Mot Bomb .
Gigadramon devolved and then a pair of human and digimon -- A boy and a Gigimon -- started to fall, but Silphymon caught the duo with their arms and then gently landed on the floor.
“!!” Hikari gasped, “Matsuno Takato-kun?!”
“Do you know this kid, Hikari-san?” Iori asked.
“He’s a classmate,” Takeru replied, “He’s friends with Daisuke-kun.”
“HEY, WHERE’S DAISUKE YOU FAKER?! Miyako gritted her teeth.
“... Miyako” V-mon frowned, “He is Daisuke.”
“WHAT?!”
“Oh, are you surprised?” the enemy scoffed, “This only makes things funnier for you all right?”
“Daisuke-kun…??” Hikari was kinda pale by the shock.
“No, you’re not him!” Arsenemon narrowed his eyes at that person who was claiming to be Daisuke. Not his friend. His friend wouldn’t NEVER!!
“But I am, Arsenemon” he smirked, “And now-- huh?”
Arsenemon however, smirked.
“Why are you smilin--”
Then suddenly Ken appeared behind the fake Daisuke, and Immobilized him. Not only that, he also was armed with something that looked like one of Stingmon’s spikes.
“Alright ‘Daisuke’,” Ken said, with his old Digimon Kaiser voice tone, “You might be thinking I didn’t see it coming, but you’re not a mile able to outsmart me at least. WHERE’S IS THE REAL DAISUKE YOU INSECT?!”
“Didn’t you hear V-mon, you idiot!? I’m him! I’m--”
“Then, better me put you out of misery like Daisuke would want me to do in case he just had gone insane.”
“Well then go ahead. I dare you to do that, Ichijouji Ken.”
“Ken, please no!” V-mon babbled in panic, then he looked at Takeru, “Please use HolyAngemon on him… N-now!”
“Huh??” Takeru found that odd, but he knew V-mon had a point, “R-right…!”
Patamon warp evolved into HolyAngemon, and then…
“Holy Disinfection!!”
HolyAngemon quickly used his holy powers to exorcize whatever was happening with Daisuke. It was when something strange left Daisuke’s mouth, a black mist which turned into a form of Matadrmon.
“?!?!?!”
“Argh…!! How did you--?!”
Daisuke was freed and coughed, “UGH, DUDE!! WHY WERE YOU?! HUH WHA-- IT’S HIM! THE DIGIMON WHO ATTACKED ME!!”
“So he had possessed Daisuke…” Armadimon commented.
“Are you okay now?” Ken threw the spike away and put his other hand on Daisuke’s shoulder.
“Yeah, I… I knew y’all would save us.”
“Oh this is getting more and more interesting!” Matadrmon felt delighted, “This round has been won by you, Ichijouji Ken. But the next one…”
“WE WON’T LET YOU ESCAPE!!” The Chosen Children, their digimon, Arsenemon and Espimon said in unison and tried immediately to attack Matadrmon.
But Matadrmon was shielded by the eyepatched Devidramon. And then they saw a human with a mask and hoodie on, at the top of a tree.
“Who??”
The mysterious human threw a smoke bomb (and at the same time a card) on the ground and then the human and the two opponent digimon vanished. Once the smoke effect had vanished, Ken noticed the card and took it.
It said…
Congratulations, you won this time, Ichijouji Ken. The next game might be more entertaining. If you manage to find out the other 15 pieces, I will call cease-and-desist and stop the show. Only if you Play the Game, by the way. ----- Yours sincerely, the Digimon Kaiser.
Ken had to show it to the others, but right now he was afraid of Daisuke and the other two victims’ health conditions. So they decided to take them to Joe as soon as possible.

Band naming schemes are cool ‘cause I remember back when I watched anime like Noragami pre-2018, its first opening is 午夜の待ち合わせ (Goya no Machiawase, “Midnight Rendezvous”) by Hello Sleepwalkers. I thought that “Hello Sleepwalkers” is a cool band name, so around that time I named my fictional band “Black Paper Shards” I think. Some sort of edgy rock band haha
If I remember correctly, the three members (all based on people/characters I’ve seen in my dreams) are all in their teens
Connor
he/him
lead guitarist/singer
golden-retriever-type
warm brown/orange/beige colours
leather (?) jacket, hoodie, tight pants
inspired by Pokémon GO’s Team Instinct leader, Spark
Juki (probably written as 樹希…?)
she/her
drummer
originally the group was a boy band but somewhere along the line I decided to make her a girl instead
cool and skilled, kind of a tease
black & some neon pink accents in clothes, deep green
somewhat emo (?), tank top (?), detached sleeves, baggy pants
inspired by Hatsune Miku
Frank
he/him
bassist/rhythm guitarist (I think?)
polite but distant loner, quite soft on the inside
cool brown, blue-grey, dark green (?)
hoodie or wind jacket (?), dark pants
-
I sketched this last night. I wonder if my past self would feel happy at this…?
Tumblr media
Frank: BPS? “Beats Per Second” sounds rather extreme.
Connor: No no no, it stands for— (strikes a pose) Black Paper Shards⚡️
Frank: …
Frank: Ok I’ll join your band
Juki: (huh that’s a quick answer)
.
Looking at it now, if you’ve got a trio band consisting of a lead guitarist/vocalist, a drummer, and a rhythm guitarist/bassist, and they intend to preform live… Then it’s more convenient in one song for the guitarist to switch between lead and rhythm on the same guitar, and bassist stick with the bass huh…
Now knowing the upcoming anime project (and virtual band I guess) GIRLS BAND CRY (some pages have saturated background colours) the fictional band in that anime, トゲナシトゲアリ (TOGENASHI TOGEARI) consists of five members which would be more convenient… Vocalist, guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist
🤔Has there been band stories where the vocalist is a singing voice synthesizer software…? (e.g. concept like software & voicebank but not necessarily VOCALOID in particular) Like, basically same idea as VOCALOID concerts but with a set band and set singer(s)? Oh, but then there needs to be a software engineer/tuner…
It’d be nice if BPS gets another guitarist. I think I had a concept of a guitarist that’s basically the personification of a guitar I’ve got? In my mind’s eye, they look something like IA (the Vocaloid) but with orange accents instead of pink, with a long braid at the back I guess?

cyberhanami day 6 - "Focus on Sound"
content warnings: emotional distress, dysmorphia + body horror
Goro/Valentine
Big thank you to @another-corpo-rat for prompting this for me!!
summary: One day they woke her up she she could live forever.
<Is there some part of you stuck in limbo forever while they peel off copies to put in shards?>
<Jesus, V.> Johnny’s sudden hostility made her look up, to find him pacing behind the couch. <Got no fucking idea. Why’d you have to ask?>
<Sorry.> She redressed with some difficulty, trying to avoid aggravating the wound. <Morbid curiosity. A few weeks ago I would have said it was impossible to digitize someone so faithfully, but I was wrong. Wish I understood how it works.>
- excerpt from the damn things overlap
At night, V liked to stretch her legs. She had several, now, on nearly every floor of Arasaka tower– drones which were suitable for maintenance and simple tasks. In the past, when she had seen them skittering through the halls early in the morning, she had never given much thought to who controlled them. She had assumed they were autonomous, like the ones that had occasionally roamed the halls of her apartment building. In reality, they had been driven by the runners who kept the tower secure and systems running smoothly. Now nearly all of them were hers, if she chose to use them.
She had long since mapped the length and breadth of her body– with the exception of a handful of floors where even she was not permitted to be. Luckily the jungle was not one of these. When it was not in use it was where she spent her evening break.
The trees were not the only living things in the expansive space, although they were the most eye-catching. While the cicada chorus played all year round, there were a few months of the year was sung by the actual insects themselves, freshly molted and enjoying both the fresh air and freedom to do everything a cicada was meant to do, safe from the dangers of the outside world or any natural predators. They were culled periodically, of course, to keep the population in check. Their keeper– a woman who spoke only Japanese and then only about her plant and animal charges, had no qualms discussing her carefully controlled ecosystem in every detail– even if it was to the unblinking, expressionless eye of a drone.
It was summer now, and as V drove the drone over the tiled floor, the air above was almost deafeningly loud with cicada cries. She stopped the drone once it had climbed upon the imposing conference table at the heart of the jungle, neatly tucking its legs underneath it. She did not have eyes to close (and by the same measure had too many eyes to close all at once), but she could become still, and feel the vibrations on the surface of the drone’s carapace, which traveled all the way down to what passed for her heart.
They weren’t her cicadas, of course, not like the symbol she had set for her terminal banner, or the icon she used for the software that fed her support and maintenance requests. These cicadas lived and died within the span of a single year– all the moments of their lives spent living rather than over a decade and a half of building anticipation. She had witnessed generations pass in their entirety. Whenever she was haunted by the past, their songs and the songs of their ancestors always brought her back.
Tonight, her moment of contemplation was cut short by the arrival of a very particular AV in one of her hangars– one that belonged to Hanako Arasaka herself. She had been coming more and more frequently in the past year, and her presence always stirred up an interesting sort of commotion. V often followed her in her transition from physical to virtual, and if she was certain that Hanako knew of her curiosity, she never did anything about it. The more things V learned the less she believed they’d ever let her go, but still she couldn’t seem to help it. Data was all she had, and puzzling over which pieces to put together was as close as she got to a hobby.
The AV hangar cameras were some of the few that were continuously monitored by human eyes as well as software, and she was far from the only person lining up to gawk at royalty. If she cared to track them, she would find any number of tunneled streams leading to dozens of interfaces in the building. She’d first seen Saburo on a visit to Night City the very same way.
Oda came first, as always, his brief contemptuous sweep of the bay making all the guards straighten another inch. Hanako came after, elegantly and flawlessly imperious. And then, to V’s cold shock, Goro stepped out behind her.
She no longer possessed an endocrine system, or any sort of true adrenal response, but an engram was only as good as its level of fidelity– and somewhere deep inside her the strength of her response throttled several of her cores. Without hands there was nothing to ground her but the strength of the cicada song against the drone. If she flooded her levels too long her handlers had the unbearable habit of insinuating themselves into her attention. She ran her suppression scripts, relaxing as the world around her become flat and unreal.
While Oda accompanied Hanako to the executive level, Goro split off, descending into the tower. V watched him through the elevator camera, unable to stop herself from continuously tracing the lines of his face. He looked just as she remembered. She could still read the tense set of his shoulders, and the brief restlessness he allowed himself just before the car came to a stop. The ID tag on his interface had some unfamiliar title, based in some city she did not know. She could have looked it up, but she could not bear to divide herself. To tear away her attention.
After what she’d done to Hellman’s office, she was not permitted to move freely around the network which interfaced with Mikoshi as she did others. Indeed, she was not even permitted in drone form on the floor where he and his department operated. She’d honored that restriction faithfully for years, but she broke it as soon as Goro stepped off the elevator, tracking him as he walked. It took her handlers a few minutes to notice her transgression, and then another few to determine which of them would confront her about it. She ignored their messages and sent them one of her own– a livestream of the cicada cries straight into their audio channels.
They’d been with her long enough to know what that meant, and their desire to ensure Hanako’s visit went smoothly was overridden by their desire not to make her angry. V was half-fond of them– they were, after all, her primary source of human contact– but if she fried them all in their chairs she would be given replacements. After all, they weren’t the ones responsible for the year over year upward trend of operational efficiency at NC tower.
Hellman's staff were prepared for Goro’s visit. She followed him all the way up until the point where he jacked into the Mikoshi interface, when she was consumed by the sudden need to be as far away as possible. Thankfully she had a new distraction– the tiny pip of a connection request, coming from one of the executive floors, where she had no eyes. She accepted it and was almost immediately granted access to an unfamiliar drone.
V moved her attention into it immediately, guessing correctly that this was an official summons. Oda stepped back from the drone as she assumed control and repositioned herself so she was facing Hanako. The drone had the most advanced suite of software V had seen, with a wide array of sensory data that felt like settling into a feast after years of starvation. She tapped one of the drone’s feet against the stool it had been placed on, and savored the texture of the touch, and the minute vibrations which quietly shivered up the frame. Around her she could once again feel the buzz of the radio spectrum like the soft ripples of waves against her skin– and if she was sure that she would grow tired of the overstimulation, in the moment it felt like sinking back into a warm bath.
“Hanako-sama,” V said in greeting, loathing the sound of her digitized voice. “It’s a pleasure to have you visit, as always.”
“I detest this city,” Hanako replied, with a side glance to the city outside the window behind her. “But I am pleased to see the progress being made here.”
It was easy, within digital confines, to disguise emotion– especially anger. All V had to do was stand idle. They could open her up, of course, watch the data flowing through her heart and her soul. They could do that and come to all sorts of conclusions. But that was no different than the way they had once tracked the rise and fall of her hormones, and at least now she knew when someone was looking.
“A suitable body for your engram has been recovered,” Hanako continued, oblivious to her non-response. “It will be ready for implantation soon. There will be a chance of rejection, of course, but Dr. Hellman has told me that it is much lower than with previous matches.”
This time she waited, and it was some time before V could bring herself to respond. “That is good to hear.”
This was, she supposed, the moment where she might beg for favor. For understanding. For mercy. This was, she supposed, the moment that haunted her every thought, every preparation, every early dawn hour. The very moment which she worked so tirelessly never to think about at all.
She had read her contract so many times it had ceased to contain meaning. It was a brand, a warning, a reminder. It was a simple text file sitting in her root directory that was as much a part of her as her digital neural network. If she might beg for leniency on the application of some of its sections, there were too many for her to ever get what she wanted. Divergence might be a term with enough ambiguity for her to argue with, but even in her wildest fantasies she could not imagine the contract duration itself to be subject to discussion. It all had to be paid for by someone, after all. And until now that someone had been her.
A hundred and fifty floors below, Goro was holding a conversation with someone who was not herself.
“Hanako-sama,” V said, with utter neutrality. “I hope you will not tell her about me.”
Hanako tilted her head slightly, the light in her eye suggesting she had already anticipated this request. “As you wish. Takemura requested to be present, so that he might assist with reintegration.”
Of course.
“I have no right to ask for your favor, but if I may?” V waited for Hanako’s mute gesture to continue. “When it is done…please do not bring him here again.”
Hanako’s lack of reaction she had expected, but the frown Oda’s face was a surprise. Yet, for once V found she had no interest in whatever fucked up web of politics he was in, or what opinion he held of her, or Goro, or his own mistress.
“I will make no such promise,” Hanako replied, which confirmed that V was being shown both the carrot and the stick. “But when the process is complete, he will return to Japan.”
There were too many questions that V could not bring herself to ask. In her heart, one of her runners played for her the sound of rainfall. In the jungle, her drone slammed one of its feet down repeatedly on the table, just audible over the screaming of the cicadas.
Johnny had been right about the leash. Johnny had been right about a lot of things, but he was dead. He was dead, because she had killed him. And she had never asked what ghosts still lingered in the prison she had left behind.
“He does not know of your presence here,” Hanako told her. “The improvements you have made here have shown promise, but it is of course still an early trial.”
Early for a woman who was nearly a century old. But she had lived a long portion time out of the view of others, and V could admire her subtleties. It was too late to listen to a dead man, but there were other options.
“Of course,” V said. “I understand.”
Hanako lowered her chin slightly, locking eyes with the drone. “You may tell him, if you wish.”
It was a double-edged sword, but V found herself clinging to it all the same. In the jungle she folded the drone’s legs underneath itself again. There was a brief blip of a notification in her peripheral– a minor malfunction in one of the mechanisms that moved inventory between floors. But it was gone almost as soon as it arrived, the job taken by another one of her runners.
“This drone is a gift,” Hanako continued, when V did not reply. “I hope to continue to receive good reports.”
“Thank you, Hanako-sama. I am at your service.”
Her answering nod was also a dismissal, and V carefully piloted the unfamiliar drone off the stool and out of the office. She returned to the cameras around Mikoshi, keeping watch over Goro’s body. It occurred to her that she might pull the recording of the conversation, as she easily as she had insinuated herself into the network, but the very idea made her nerves itch, even under the influence of her script. They hadn’t put up any barriers here. Another test.
Just looking at him made her want to touch him again, to be close enough to smell the sweat on his skin and feel every breath he took. Those memories were as vivid as they always had been, even though the gray in his hair had long since spread beyond his temples. There were new lines around the corners of his eyes, the mark of all their time spent apart. Much, much longer than the frantic span of a few weeks at the end of a single summer.
She hated him so fiercely and so abruptly she thought she might burn through her hardware, seized in the throes of anger she hadn’t felt since they’d first woken her up. But it passed as the minutes ticked on, and left her scoured clean. By the time he opened his eyes again she felt nothing at all, just the steady sound of the jungle, and distant rainfall. Her new drone, now tucked away safely into her heart, paced through the server racks in steady, soothing rhythm.
When he left, she stopped his elevator car in the jungle, instead of his true destination. Goro exited the car when it did not respond to his controls, and after a moment of indecision, stepped out into the room. Watching him, she could almost feel the change of humidity on his skin, the sudden scream of a nearby cicada that drew his attention upwards to the trees. The warmth of the artificial sunlight, dappling through the leaves onto his face. He walked down the steps to the conference table, where her drone sat quiet and unmoving.
V fled within herself, retreating to the sanctity of her internal subnet until one of her runners dropped a ticket into her work queue, marked specifically for her attention. It wasn’t urgent, but the last ticket he’d sent in a similar manner had been diverting, and she was of mind to reward the behavior. Maybe it was time to invest in this newest batch.
So long as she made certain they could never be taken away.

We're changing software at work so I had a long stretch of nothing to do so I was on Goodreads just dinking around and looking at the new books we can't check in for a few more days, and I got daydreaming again about something with D6R that's really been an intriguing idea for me (for more on D6R check my post here).
D6R was an older draft of Rising Shards before it really became itself, so the characters and tone and everytthing are so different that I think it'd be cool to make my revised version of it in the same universe but with different characters. This story I've been dabbling about how to connect it to RS (originally it happened in the first season where the D6R crew shows up there), but I always had the inkling that the exile story of D6R happened before the events of RS.
Since D6R is tonally different (mainly a fantasy adventure journeying somewhere vs. the mishmash of genres RS is) and different in form (traditional manuscript vs. web novel), I think it would be so cool if someday I could get D6R published and have that side be there as one part of the universe and Rising Shards as another, like RS readers can get lore and backstory in a hopefully not boring prequel-y way since it's so different (I'm hesitant to put D6R up as a web novel cuz I fear it won't get the same traction as RS cuz it's very not web novel-y and it do not scratch similar itches but I might someday), and readers starting with D6R and can find out there's also a giant slice of life fantasy wlw web novel that happens after that's already running.
Even with the itch to try tradpub again, I have to brace myself already this early in the project (or maybe pretty far in since I've worked on this branch of the RSverse for a looong while already) for all my tradpub woes, mainly stuff that held me up before. Not just the heavy unlikeliness of success, but the roadblocks I have with disliking the whole process of lit agents and queries and ugh. But maybe if I really heavily revise this, really polish it up, get all those barfy things like comps and whatever in place, maybe someday I can have some print projects. This is just a fun daydream right now, but in the one in a million shot everything lines up, this would be super cool 🥰
(Also bonus for D6R right now: a heavy revision of an old project is definitely scratching different creative muscles than Rising Shards, which is a major goal for a side project the last year or so)
