It was late when he came home that night. A glance to the digital clock on your nightstand placed it at almost two o’clock in the morning. You could hear Ranmaru close the front door to the apartment with a slam, an immediate indication that he was not having a good night. You opted to close your eyes and pretend to be asleep so as not to have to deal with his obviously sour mood.

After several minutes of raucous noise coming from the kitchen, you heard Ranmaru make his way into your shared bedroom, kicking off his shoes and closing himself off in the bathroom. The shower kicked on, and you heaved a heavy sigh.

You were almost asleep when Ranmaru finished with his shower, exiting the bathroom and sliding his way into the bed with little regard as to if he was waking you or not. Still, you pretended to sleep. You could feel his eyes on you, and it made keeping a steady breath incredibly difficult. You were just about to give up the ruse and say something when you felt him shift closer to you, his arm snaking its way around your torso as his chest met with your back. You froze, unable to know what to make of the situation. Your boyfriend, Ranmaru, one of the most vicious and inhospitable people you had ever met, was nuzzling into you. You felt like you had a fractious cat snuggling against you, too afraid to move or risk facing its clawed wrath.

Ranmaru exhaled, sounding almost annoyed despite his gestural language indicating otherwise. “I know you’re awake.”

“Oh,” you mumbled, a little embarrassed at being so blatantly called out for your charade. You opted to venturing into the cause of his bitter mood in hopes of exonerating yourself. “Wanna talk about it?”

Ranmaru didn’t respond, only tightening the hold his arm had over your waist. It was all you needed to understand that he was cutting the conversation there. You knew that when you woke up he would already be gone, likely off to deal with Doubt matters that you were not privy to, so you basked in the rarity of his affection while you could. You relaxed into his arms, feeling the rhythm of his breathing as you finally allowed yourself to drift off to sleep.
