Errors, “Errors,” and Sci Fi
@strawberry-crocodile
tvtropes calls stuff like the wolf example "science matches on" which I think is a pretty fair shake
This.  This is what’s got me thinking so much about errors.  There’s a certain danger, here.  A certain way that this particular effect — delicious dramatic irony — tempts the mind when reading old stories, even true ones.
What do you know about R.M.S. Titanic? I ask my class every year, and the first hand rises.  “It was unsinkable,” the student inevitably says, and everyone is nodding, “or so they thought.”  I write the word UNSINKABLE on the board, underneath my crude drawing of a ship with four smokestacks.  It will be crossed out before the end of the hour, but not for the reason they expect.
“I find no evidence,” Walter Lord, preeminent biographer of the ship’s survivors, wrote, “that Titanic was ever advertised as unsinkable. This detail seems to have entered the collective mind so as to create a more perfect irony.”  Indeed, historians’ examinations of White Star Line documents show the shipbuilders themselves worried it would be so large as to risk collision; they stocked several more lifeboats than 1910s regulations required.
The War to End All Wars (deep breath, satisfied exhale), also known as World War ONE. Chuckle.  Shake of the head.  What if I told you that this phrase, used primarily in American newspapers after the fact, wasn’t meant to be literal? Nowadays we’d say The Mother of All Wars, or One Hell of a Fucking War, but we wouldn’t mean literal motherhood, literal intercourse.  What if I said the armistice and the Lost Generation and the Roaring 20s were all braced for another outbreak of European conflict, and yet we still failed to prevent it?
Did you know they were so confident in the safety of the S.S. Challenger that they put a civilian schoolteacher onboard? I do, because I’ve heard that one repeated many times.  Only, see, it’s got the cause and effect reversed.  Challenger launched on a day the shuttle’s engineers knew to be dangerously cold, because the first civilian in space was on board. And NASA knew its shuttle project would be cancelled entirely, if they couldn’t get that civilian’s much-delayed entry into space in the next two weeks.  So they launched on a cold day, and killed her instead.
These are all what cognitive science calls Hindsight Bias on the personal level, what sociology calls Presentism on the cultural level.  Social psychology’s a little of both, is primarily interested in why you’re sitting on your couch in a Colonize Mars shirt watching PBS and chuckling at the fools who believed in El Dorado.  It wants to know why the mind flees straight from “marijuana will kill you” to “marijuana will cure cancer” without so much as a pause on the middle ground of its real benefits and drawbacks, its real (mild) risks and rewards.
And they can paralyze the sci-fi writer, if you think too much about them. Jetsons is futurist one decade, retro the next.  “There are no bathrooms on the Enterprise,” the creators of Serenity say smugly, as if Gene Roddenberry should’ve simply known that decades later it’d be acceptable to show a man peeing in full view of the camera, nothing but the curve of the actor’s hand to protect his modesty.  “No sound in space,” the Fandom Menace says, “No explosions in space,” and “A space station can’t collapse in zero-G.”  Only then NASA burns a paper napkin outside of atmosphere, transmits music using only the ghost of nearby planets’ gravities, and logs onto Reddit long enough to point out the Death Star would implode in its own gravity field.  And now we’re the ones pointing, the ones laughing, at those earlier point-and-laughers.  Self-satisfied, smug in superiority.  As if we did the work to find out ourselves, instead of just happening to be born a little later than George Lucas.

Like everyone else, I've been having some thoughts on Link Click's latest episodes.
Namely, I'd like to discuss whether Link Click's story is deep enough into the "mystery" genre to actually play by the rules of a detective mystery.
Is Link Click's mystery even meant to be solvable? Should we all take the ending's advice and just "quit overthinking"? My thought is no! Below the cut are some classic rules that may guide us in solving this tale.
As we all know, the fun in reading a mystery comes from attempting to solve it. Therefore, there must be an agreement between the reader and the author that the mystery is in fact solvable by the reader. Guidelines were made in the late 1920s (Agatha Christie's time) regarding the rules of a mystery. They are the Ten Commandments of Ronald Knox and S.S Van Dine's Twenty Rules. I'll be directly quoting, and you can read them in full here: Link
Of course, as the mystery genre evolves, it is no longer bound to these rules. (Link Click ignores Knox's 2nd, as it's a supernatural mystery, for example) But the sentiment of guaranteeing reader solvability stands true.
Points that stand out to me include:
Knox's 1st: The criminal must be mentioned in the early part of the story, but must not be anyone whose thoughts the reader has been allowed to know.
I want to take this as meaning that our clue to the WHO and WHY of all this might exist as far back as "Emma." But does "early part of the story" maybe refer to S1 as a whole, or should we only count S2?
Knox's 6th: No accident must ever help the detective, nor must he ever have an accountable intuition which proves to be right.
I believe the story has followed this. No problem is solved by "just a hunch." There has always been evidence provided to the viewer.
Knox's 10th: Twins...and doubles generally, must not appear unless we have been duly prepared for them.
We were prepared for the switch, and many of you called it! Evidence that Link Click IS playing by some of these rules. (go team!)
Other Knox rules involves the "Detective" and the "Sidekick." Neither the detective nor the sidekick may conceal facts from the reader, nor may they be a culprit. Which completely (suspiciously) excludes Lu Guang from either role. Cheng Xiaoshi could fit the role of detective, and if there IS a single designated sidekick, (a Watson whose job it is to voice thoughts at the intelligence level of the reader) it is Qiao Ling, who is doing an excellent job of telling us what we want to hear and possibly leading us astray.
Van Dine's 1st: The reader must have equal opportunity with the detective for solving the mystery. All clues must be plainly stated and described.
Okay. This is not a novel, so I don't think clues need to be plainly stated, but they must be plainly shown (like the damn kettle.)
Van Dine's 2nd: No willful tricks or deceptions may be played on the reader other than those played legitimately by the criminal on the detective himself.
I think this is where many of us have ill sentiments toward the writers. I want to give benefit of the doubt about the eyes, seeing as the characters themselves seen to be unawares. I am solely focused on body language for future assumptions made. It still hurts. This is why it hurts.
Van Dine's 10th: The culprit must turn out to to be a person who has played a more or less prominent part in the story -- that is, a person with whom the reader is familiar and in whom he takes an interest. For a writer to fasten the crime, in the final chapter, on a stranger or person who has played a wholly unimportant part in the tale, is to confess to his inability to match wits with the reader.
This is a rule I find to be quite important and that worries me most. Whoever "hat man" is, I NEED him to be someone we've met. Better if we've known them since s1. Because, truly, as far as mysteries go? I think we are too deep in for a new, important character to come out of left field. But, um, well, the options are pretty limited in that case, aren't they?
Van Dine's 15th: The truth of the problem must at all times be apparent -- provided the reader is shrewd enough to see it. By this I mean that if the reader, after learning the explanation for the crime, should reread the book, he would see that the solution had, in a sense, been staring him in the face -- that all the clues really pointed to the culprit -- and that, if he had been as clever as the detective, he could have solved the mystery himself.
This rule is the heart of the matter. In following this rule, we can trust that (with 3 episodes left) all the clues we need are RIGHT. THERE. That we have a right to be blissfully frustrated because we can trust that the mystery is solvable. Is that the case? I honestly don't know, and I wish I did.
I also want to mention Van Dine's 18th and 19th which state that a crime must never turn out to be accident or suicide (as followed with Emma), and the motive for all crimes should be personal (Liu Min, Qian Jin, and Li TianChen check the box, even if we can only guess at the specific motives in relation to the victims.)
So, I think we all agree that Link Click embodies many genres at once. I could never, in good faith, recommend this story to someone as solely a mystery. But is Link Click enough of a mystery that we can trust it to abide by these rules? I'm not fully convinced we can even designate any character as "the detective", making some of these rules (for detective mysteries) moot.
What do you think? Is what we are being shown something we can trust and solve? Can we use these rules to help us find the solution? Or should we define this show as a drama/suspense first and a mystery second? I, personally, want to believe in the mystery.
But please, whatever you do, don't stop thinking about it. This is too much fun!

'Olimar always crashes into the same planet haha he's such a bad pilot' is the 'Peach is just some damsel who never does anything' or 'Jonathan Harker is so oblivious' of the Pikmin fandom. 2 and 3 do not feature any crashes from Olimar.
He was stranded in 3 by his ship being destroyed on the surface by the Quaggled Mireclops. The final scene of the Olimar's Assignment mode has him expect a smooth return to Hocotate, which only makes sense if the Hocotate Ship hadn't been Mireclopsed yet. Meaning it was only destroyed, thus stranding him, after he was abducted by the Plasm Wraith and couldn't do anything about it.
Also Hey Pikmin, which does have him crash, is set on a different planet. And the cause of the crash is a malfunction in the warp drive putting Olimar right into an asteroid field, an unexpected machine error. Additionally you can't use it against Olimar in 4 unless you can explain how he goes from the S.S Dolphin II to the S.S Dolphin I again.
Pikmin 1's manual also states that the S.S Dolphin was on autopilot when the meteor collided with it, so his own piloting skills weren't even a factor there. The Guard Satellite is stated to be an automated defense mechanism, reliable enough to consistently fend off space pirates, so Olimar had reason to believe threats like the asteroid wouldn't strike before he could get to the pilot's seat.
In the grand total of the series Olimar has crashed on PNF 404 twice, and those times were in different continuities (you have to do absurd gymnastics to say 4 isn't a reboot), with one other crash into a different planet.
In 1 and Hey it was due to the failure of a ship feature that previously proved reliable. In 4 there are clear implications of a mysterious force making everyone crash like what caused the S.S Drake's crash in 3, and people don't say Alph is a shit engineer for the S.S Drake's one showing having it crash for reasons he can't even figure out.
You know what has actually caused Olimar to go back to PNF 404 repeatedly in the same continuity, the president of the Hocotate Freight Company. Both of his visits to the planet in both 2 and 3 are ordered and overseen by the Hocotate President. That's four of the five visits there in the original continuity, the crash is the odd one out actually.
One of Olimar's 4 treasure notes even mentions a special good pilot license he has that lets him skip the license renewal bureaucracy, which he mourns the inevitable loss of due to crashing on the planet, meaning it's his first time crashing in a long time at least, if not ever.

Chapter 6
Summary: Fresh off the Hogwarts Express, Sixth Year Raegan DesRosiers has her sights set on nothing more than making the Quidditch team and finally having time to focus on herself.
Of course, where's the fun in sticking to a plan?
Instead, she begins to uncover the origins of ancient magic, which puts her life and power at greater risk than ever. But Raegan has always been one to take the bull by the horns, determined to be an agent of the change she seeks.
Then along comes Sebastian Sallow: the one wild card she could never control.
Burdened by his own dark past and seeking a way back on the right path…and into the heart of his reluctant friend, he becomes entangled in Raegan’s mysteries once more without restraints or reservations, save for this: the suspicion that she’s keeping more than one harrowing secret.
Not that he doesn’t have a few of his own.
The two might just need to look into a mirror - to mend what is fractured before it entirely falls apart.
Chapter Synopsis: Raegan’s got a full plate and yet still finds herself feeling empty, seeking something to fill that hole - though she may get more than she’s bargained for, if Sebastian has anything to say about it.
Words: 4.6k
Rating: T (some ~scandalous~ inner ramblings from seb and adult language)
After posting solely on other sites since starting this story, I decided to add tumblr to the mix since I’ve been more active on here recently. This is kind of a preview, if you will - if you want to read the first five chapters head over to wattpad or ao3.
It was a good thing Raegan had favored the outdoors over the summer because, in the days that followed her visit to the Map Chamber, the only sunlight she saw was during Advanced Flying class - save for the times she chose to do her reading in the meadow Vivarium. If that even counted.
It took a mediocre twenty-four hours for Raegan to succumb to loneliness. Without Sebastian, Ominis, Diana, or any of the others sitting beside her, the only company she had was that of her phoenix.
(Never mind Soleil’s penchant for bringing her small rodents he’d caught in the tall grasses of the fields).
Of course, her isolation during such a busy time of year had everyone worrying all the more - Garreth had started to conveniently appear in the common room every time Raegan returned before bed, no doubt waiting up like a concerned mother to a rebellious teenager, and Natsai was less than subtle about sneaking glances at Raegan as she changed to inspect for any more cuts or bruises.
As much as she loved them all, for one of the first times in Raegan’s life, she was starting to appreciate having some time to herself.
Not that that time was proving to be very productive. Though Raegan and her friends had already scoured the library from top to bottom for any reference to ancient magic last year, Raegan took to resuming the search.
With little luck.
What was that thing people said about the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results?
Raegan was self-aware enough to know when she was in a rut and confident enough to know there was always a way out.
But that hope grew weaker and weaker with each discarded book and pounding headache from lack of sleep. As much as she knew her friends would be more than willing, she did not dare ask for help.
Even (and especially) from the one person Raegan knew would be the best for the job.
Gods, school just started, and already I need a vacation.
Luckily, a reprieve offered itself up by the end of their first week back at Hogwarts - delivered to her on a silver platter Friday evening.
Classes were over for the day, and instead of retreating into the solitude of her secret room, Raegan made her way down to the Quidditch pitch with the other hopeful Gryffindors. There was quite the crowd already assembled, hopefuls from every year clutching brooms both bought and borrowed and donning uniforms in varying states of wear.
The sixth years all seemed to converge in a semi-circle at the front of the pack; Garreth, Natty, Leander, Nellie, and Eric were all chattering excitedly by the time Raegan managed to find a spare uniform from the locker rooms.
“Ah, there she is!” Garreth beamed when he spotted Raegan approaching the group, pulling her into his side with an arm slung around her shoulder.
“Was just telling Eric and Nellie how you’re about to give them a run for their money. In fact …how about we make it interesting? Who’s betting?”
Last week, Raegan likely wouldn’t have thought twice about the casual gesture, or the way his eyes caught the light when they met hers. After the incident in Potions…well she had started to pay extra attention to the little things she'd previously dismissed.
Like how he was always finding some excuse to touch her, or that he was constantly singing her praises, or the spots of color in Garreth’s freckled cheeks that only seemed to bloom in her presence.
Raegan wasn’t clueless. But she was prone to a healthy dose of denial now and then, apparently.
“I’ll take that bet.” Raegan said, a smile creeping onto her lips.
Soon enough, Garreth’s pockets were clinking with silver and bronze coins, and a debate had broken out amongst the group - catalyzed by Leander’s refusal to bet on Eric, which snowballed into a fantastic display of masculine indignation.
Thankfully, the shrill shriek of a whistle cut through the din, and every Gryffindor in attendance went silent to face their Captain.
Raegan, who fancied herself a purveyor of fine taste, could not see what all the hype was about. Isaac Cooper was relatively handsome; with a mop of golden curls and tan skin, but he wasn’t anything special . Though considering how much Ominis raved about missing Quidditch games, she supposed it likely wasn’t just his looks that got people going.
“Welcome newcomers, and welcome back to our returning members. Right. This year, we’re starting fresh. Everybody gets a clean slate, got that?”
Several scoffs and murmurs of disbelief echoed amongst who Raegan assumed to be the existing teammates.
“Those of you who were on the team two years ago will get priority, but that doesn’t mean you won't be replaced.” Isaac said evenly, gaze taking a moment to settle on each student as he addressed the crowd.
“We will rotate positions every ten minutes, so make sure you put your best foot forward. That being said: I’m sure we’re all anxious to get to dinner, so first up is…”
Isaac began rattling off a list of names - Garreth and Natty were the only ones of real note. It left Raegan’s mind to wander as she sized up the other hopefuls - most of them hardly able to walk upright without difficulty on a good day.
Most of them knew it, too, and had shown up anyway.
Every Gryffindor loved a bit of glory.
“Hey,” Garreth nudged her shoulder, strapping on elbow pads as he spoke. “Better get him out of here before Isaac gets wind of a spy and goes ballistic.”
He answered her questioning glance with a vague gesture of his gloved hand towards the entrance, where indeed a spy had arrived clad in green and silver.
“My guess is he’s here for a good luck kiss.” Garreth taunted.
There was something behind his eyes even with that flippant demeanor - a question.
”Well, I don’t need luck, so he made the trip for nothing.” Raegan said half-heartedly, watching Sebastian’s figure approach them casually.
“However, I will give you one before I kick him out.”
Garreth’s brows shot to the clouds, but he had little time to bring himself back to Earth before Raegan leaned forward and bestowed a peck on his heated cheek, popping up on the balls of her feet to reach.
“ Brilliant… ” Garreth mumbled when she’d pulled away to give him an indulgent smile. “Er - I mean, thanks. Definitely feeling lucky now.”
Raegan's snort of amusement made him quick to add, “Not like that! I meant to say… Oh, Merlin’s beard, you’re a menace!”
”I’ve been called worse.”
With one final, lilting “ Break a leg !” over her shoulder, Raegan walked off, shaking her head upon making the discovery that blushing might very well be contagious.
Maybe a relationship was out of the question given the current state of her affairs, but what was the harm in a little flirting between friends to test the waters?
And speaking of flirty friends…
Sebastian met her near the wide entrance to the pitch, the bravado-soaked grin he often donned present, though his eyes didn't possess their usual accompanying crinkle.
"My favorite Gryffindor.” He greeted her, arms crossing over his chest as he relaxed against the wooden post. “Don’t worry, I come in peace. Just wanted to wish you luck in tryouts - though I’m sure you’ll outfly them all.”
Flattery. One of his favorite tactics.
From the pocket of his breeches, Sebastian produced a single, vibrantly green clover which boasted not three, but four leaves.
“Just in case.”
“Where did you even find this?” Raegan moved automatically to pluck the stem from his fingers, studying it in the sunlight. “Transfigured, is it?”
"Found it myself. Suppose I'm quite talented at finding rare things."
His eyes darted to her hair; the copper strands knotted in a loose braid down her back, and tucked the clover securely behind her ear.
Why she didn't immediately rip out and incinerate the damn thing was a mystery, but she found it nearly impossible to do much besides hold her breath until he’d restored the space between them.
She was trying not to remember the smell of pine and candy and smoke.
"Is that all you came here for?" Raegan cleared her throat, glancing back as the whoosh of several brooms taking flight created a light breeze.
"Why are you always so suspicious of me?" Sebastian placed a hand over his heart as if mortally wounded.
"You're lucky I'm not blessing you with a kiss - though I see you've already got that handled."
Ah, so he did see that. Good.
"Be careful, is all I'm saying. People may start to think you two are..." He trailed off, the silence punctuated by an exaggerated raise of his brows.
Raegan couldn't let that one slide. "It's nobody's business who I'm courting; I've no real family to embarrass anyway, and I could give a damn what this lot thinks besides.
"Not that I'm courting anyone. Or planning to. So-"
Please, mouth, stop moving for once. She had to inhale greedily, having rushed it all out in one stuttered breath.
"Relax, don't have a fit." Sebastian shook his head. "I think it's sweet. I mean... you could do a lot worse than Garreth. Or a lot better, depending on your perspective."
What was that meant to be, reverse reverse psychology?
"I'm not involved with Garreth, for Merlin's sake." Her huffed sigh ruffled the stray hairs escaping from their plait.
An escape was exactly what she needed right now, if only to avoid the ridiculous dance they'd found themselves trapped in.
"Right. I know that."
Do you?
"Glad we've cleared that up, then. Now, unless you want to stand in as Cooper's personal Bludger, you'd better make yourself scarce." Raegan warned, brow arching high.
"Alright, I know when I'm not wanted. Best of luck again, Rae."
He strolled across the bridge, disappearing from sight before she had time to question the entire exchange.
Thankfully Raegan got through tryouts with all her bones intact, and with a spectacular performance (if she did say so herself) to boot - the likes of which had absolutely nothing to do with the four leaves wilting amongst her waves.
Just as she was heading back to the castle - disheveled and glistening with perspiration that demanded a bath - the voice of Lucan Brattleby carried over her shoulder.
"Raegan! Natsai! Garreth!" He jogged up to the trio, still panting from his tryout. "Great flying out there! To think we'll all be teammates soon, huh?
Anyway, I wanted to be the one to share: the first round of Crossed Wands is all set for Monday at 4. Assuming you ladies are still competing?"
"Of course, Lucan. Wouldn't miss it." Natty smiled at the fourth year.
"Yeah, count me in, too." Raegan chimed. "Might as well go for the Champion title two years in a row."
"That's the spirit! And it'll bring a huge crowd; everyone will be dying to watch one of the school's heroes compete." Lucan beamed.
The hero worship thing was sort of adorable - if not mildly disconcerting.
"And you'll be organizing the betting again, Garreth?"
"You bet your galleons I am." Garreth replied as the money he'd collected tinkled like bells in his pocket.
Those two should start a business, truly. They'd be richer than the Gaunts.
"Brilliant! Well, off to dinner. See you guys there!" Lucan gave them a jovial wave before joining his own friends.
"So, Raegan..." Garreth cleared his throat as they, too, exited the pitch with the summer-brown grass brushing their muddied boots.
"How are the potions helping?"
For the love of-
Natty shot a questioning look between her two friends, face screwing up in preparation for whatever distressing news she was about to receive.
"Potions? And helping...what?" She asked.
"Now you've done it," Raegan groaned after shooting Garreth a withering glare. "They're only to alleviate the headaches I've been getting lately. Perfectly safe; Gryffindor's honor.
"And they've been working just fine." She added spitefully.
Liar. She had to take at least three a day, and most of the time Raegan maintained the dull, throbbing ache that never went away.
"But why are you getting headaches?" Natsai probed as they walked, her eyes ignoring the path in favor of studying Raegan.
"Yes, why are you? You still haven't even told me, and I'm your bloody dealer." Garreth grunted.
"Beats me. Nurse Blainey said everything appears to be fine." She lied again.
Raegan hadn't dared to pay a visit to the matron since the last time she'd been forced to endure the hospital wing's melancholy. How many friends had she in those beds already? Natty, Sebastian, Diana... even Leander (Chomping Cabbage incident; don't ask).
Dreadful place.
"Well, there has to be something." Natty pressed gently.
"I'm fine, Natty, as I've assured you ceaselessly. Now please, can't we talk about this another time? I need to change my bet on Lucan after seeing that Seeking he pulled off."
———
A hot bath, several helpings of chicken, and more than one slice of apple tart later, Raegan was relieved to sink into the comforting embrace of her curtain-covered bed at last.
She tried to sleep for once. Really tried. There was even a good hour somewhere around two in the morning that she drifted off only to experience the usual rude awakening that doused her in sweat for the second time that day; sheets tangled around her legs like ropes.
Suddenly, the fire burning in the dorm's stove wasn't welcoming - it was suffocating.
There remained enough sense in her half-awake state to pull a robe over the nightgown that clung to her like a second skin. Raegan all but stumbled into the stairwell with little regard for her roommates' peaceful slumber (she owed them all magical earplugs for Christmas at this point).
The journey to the Undercroft was no peaceful stroll. Shadows peeked around corners and snuck up to whisper unintelligible secrets; forcing the nightmares back to the surface like a photo in a dark room.
Well. If she wouldn't be afforded the luxury of sleep, at least she could be somewhat productive.
Upon exiting the elevator, Raegan crossed the room in search of the loose (well, it hadn't been before she'd pried it free) brick at the far wall, sliding it from its slot as the sweat on her body chilled.
Reaching in, her hands felt blindly for-
Ah.
Isidora's journal entries were still rolled and tied together just as Raegan had left them last year. Diana wanted to destroy them upon discovering San's memory, but Raegan possessed the foresight to smuggle them away, just in case. They'd both thoroughly pored over the documents already, searching for any possibility of a code the former Professor may have used, or certain letters made darker, or...
Perhaps the girls read too many mystery novels together.
It proved to be a useless endeavor, anyway, as the entries were plain as day - and frustratingly brief to boot.
What scholars thought of insanity was beginning to seem suspiciously close to her reality.
As Raegan rubbed a hand over her foggy eyes, the words on the centuries-old pages gradually came into focus. She read until her eyes might as well have been bleeding and burned with the urge to blink, and every letter was combed through at least three times over until her impatience reached a boiling point.
“'I've left them a trail to follow’ ...well, what bloody good is that trail if it has a dead end?!" Raegan growled.
She took to pacing the length of the open space with the letters crumpled in a white-knuckled fist.
"Useless. Damned stupid , bloody Isi-"
The heat was the first sign that she was about to have what Ominis would call "an episode". Following its building warmth in her palm was the burst of flame, its sudden orange-yellow glow bringing tears to her eyes.
"Fuck! Oh, now I've done it."
Raegan dropped the parchments immediately, letting them flutter to the ground before she stomped out the fire with feet she now realized to be bare.
But it hadn't been necessary: they were the same wrinkled, faded beige they'd always been without a speck of black. Both brows knotting together, Raegan stooped to examine the unchanged pages - only to remark that there was a difference, after all. Words had appeared in veins of liquid gold, written in an even messier scrawl on the back of each page.
I've never been so happy to be a hothead in my life.
"Isidora, I take it back." She breathed.
The excitement was short-lived; becoming frustration once more when she looked closer to discover that it was a language she couldn't fully comprehend.
Scottish Gaelic, to be sure. An ancient-looking form at that, complete with several runes she had only come across once or twice and never taken the time to decipher.
The clang of the elevator jolted her to attention, and Raegan made haste to stuff the journals back into their hiding spot - but not quite fast enough.
She had barely finished shoving the stone back when Sebastian's voice rang out.
"Raegan? What are you doing here?"
He was better at finding her than the Ministry was at hunting down underage wizards using magic on vacation, and it was beginning to become uncanny. Possibly a bit unsettling.
"Er...I couldn't sleep. Just needed a change of scenery." Raegan cleared her throat as she turned slowly to face the music.
"So you thought an underground lair would be a good place for fresh air?" He chuckled, eyes wandering to the wall behind her. It appeared he had been in a similar state, considering the mussed hair and the sweater he'd thrown on over a pair of loose trousers.
"Hiding something, are we?"
He didn't miss a thing. Couldn't he be just a bit less observant?
" No ."
There was a moment of silence that rapidly escalated to a standoff. Neither of them broke eye contact for a long moment, waiting for the other to break-
Sebastian drew his wand, the brick sliding out of the wall before the pages flew into his hand with a simple "Accio".
"Give those back, you thief!" Raegan lunged for the Slytherin, reaching desperately, her chest pressed to his as she raised on her tiptoes precariously and swatted at Sebastian as though in the midst of a game of Quidditch.
He seemed endlessly amused; judging by the easy smirk tugging on his lips when he met her eyes. Still holding the precious documents high above his head - too high for her to reach.
"Mmm, don't think so." Sebastian chirped victoriously. "Let's see what you're keeping from me, shall we?"
He twisted away expertly, unfurling the papers with dramatic flair before she could dart around to grab them.
"Isidora's journals..." He thought aloud. "But why all the secrecy? I bloody found them with you-"
Before he could steal another moment to further investigate the shimmering ink, Raegan snatched them away at last with a hiss.
"Why can't you keep that big nose where it belongs?" She chided.
"What is that?" He went on, undeterred by her annoyance - likely, he was just used to working around it by now. "That writing...it wasn't there before, was it?"
"Very perceptive."
"I try." His eyes drifted over her, then - seemingly noting for the first time that her attire was less than proper; only the semi-sheer ivory nightdress to cover her freckled skin, which still glistened faintly with sweat in the torchlight.
Sebastian's POV
She looks like an angel.
Raegan in general was anything but the picture of heavenly virtue. On the contrary, her color palette was reminiscent of the hellfires they spoke of in Dante's Inferno: all flaming hair and clothes in varying shades of autumn leaves and obsidian.
Even her eyes... startlingly golden, save for the time he'd seen them glow a blinding red.
Yet now he couldn't help but wonder if heaven's gates might be guarded by this avenging angel standing before him; a vision of righteous vengeance in purest white.
It drove his thoughts somewhere downright sinful.
The way the length of her throat glowed with flush and a sheen of sweat sent him spiraling - the same throat he'd imagined running his tongue along in his wildest dreams.
He should have been commended for resisting the urge to let his eyes stray below the neckline of her dress, even with the generous curves outlined beneath that cursed garment still visible in his peripheral.
Abort mission. Abort, abort, abort...
"Would you like to paint a portrait? It'll last longer."
Oh, fuck.
"I-I wasn't staring. Sorry, just...mind was elsewhere." Sebastian fumbled, blinking several times to refocus on her face. Only her face.
Somehow, that turned out to be the greater of two evils.
"Yes; in the gutter, it seems." Raegan mused.
Why did she have to call him out like that? Why did she have to be so incredibly candid and exacting? Or was Sebastian simply more transparent than he'd initially thought?
Gods, now I'm sweating.
"You... you're trying to change the subject." Sebastian re-fortified his questionable resolve, squaring his shoulders and dismissing the pang in his gut as mere discomfort.
"So, have you read them? What do they say? Anything about-"
"I was about to before you came barging in."
"Can you even read Scots?"
He didn't doubt her intelligence when he knew perfectly well the girl was at least partially fluent in three languages - but there was a set to her jaw that told him she was frustrated about something.
"I can read...a bit of it." She amended. "A few words are similar to Irish, but some are entirely different."
Raegan straightened, avoiding his gaze to roll the papers back up pointedly.
"Doesn't matter. I can translate it in an hour at the library."
"You sure about that?" Sebastian saw his chance, and he was damn well going to take it. All week he'd sought out rather pitiful excuses to spend even a moment with her despite all evidence that she wanted next to nothing to do with him.
It was time to take matters more firmly into his hands.
"From the looks of it - before you tore it from my hands like a wild animal - that isn't the modern dialect. Might even be Early Scots..."
That ever-present air of distrust grated at his nerves while she cocked her head thoughtfully.
How could he resist an opportunity to unravel the mystery they'd never gotten to crack last year? Sebastian lived and breathed a good mystery, especially when it was someone else's so he could have a break from the weight of the world on his shoulders.
He supposed that was Raegan's burden now. The least he could do was help her ease it. Plus, a bit of research would be a better occupation for his thoughts, rather than everything else recently rotting away in the corners of his consciousness.
And if it meant a chance to make up for a few regrets in the process...
"Let me help. I can have them all translated by Monday." He asserted.
She's hesitating. Maybe-
"No, I don’t think so.”
Of course not.
Sebastian leaned to the side, crossing his arms and putting on his best "don't be ridiculous" expression that typically got the point across.
"Ignore your bloody pride for a moment. You obviously are dying to know what's on those pages, and I suspect you have enough on your plate without adding an extra task to the list."
"It's not pride , I just don't need your help when I can do it myself."
"I'm well aware you could do it, Raegan." His voice softened, fearing that any more of his usual flippancy would drive her heels further into the ground. "Just because you can doesn't mean you should have to.
"You needn't do everything on your own, you know."
That seemed to hit something - something deep, from the way her mouth turned down into a frown, and how he resented that sight; like the sun hiding behind clouds and turning down the world's vibrancy.
The last thing he expected to hear was, "I don't want anyone else to know."
Was that... did she-?
"Nobody?" He raised a brow skeptically. "Not even Diana?"
"Especially not Diana." Raegan sighed. "You know how she feels about Isidora, she doesn't even know I still have these."
Sebastian thought that keeping something from her best friend likely wasn't the best course of action, but he could hardly lecture her when he'd done the very same thing in the year past.
He was ready to say, " Why ?" Why , when she had barely deigned to look at him since stepping through the doors of the Great Hall or even lowered herself to have a conversation lasting longer than five minutes, was she suddenly willing to accept his help?
Not that he was complaining, of course.
"Alright. I can understand the need for discretion. I won't breathe a word of this." Sebastian nodded solemnly.
The pause that followed... Sebastian often wondered if she inserted them after he spoke purely for dramatic effect. Or, more likely, Raegan relished in making him suffer.
"And don't even think about copying them."
"I wasn't going to!" Sebastian protested, yet he had to smile a bit - three months was nothing compared to a lifetime, sure, but at eighteen it seemed to be a year. Despite their distance, she still knew him like he knew one of his favorite books by heart.
Anyway, there was no need to copy them. Reading the journals a couple of times over would be just as effective in preserving the information for himself.
“However, if we are going to be partners-“
”- More like distant associates, but…”
”I have one condition. Since I’m so generously offering my time.”
”- Which you volunteered to provide.”
Sebastian tried out that eye roll she was so fond of, and to his displeasure, it didn’t seem to have the same effect.
“One condition: that you study with me next week.”
A simple enough request. Raegan didn’t seem to agree with the way her lips curled back in obvious distaste, but after a moment she pursed them again.
“One hour.”
"Deal.” It was more than Sebastian had dared to hope for, honestly. “Now, go on, hand them over. You look exhausted, you should get some sleep."
Raegan scrunched her nose, irritated by his blunt observation. "My eye bags aren't nearly as bad as yours."
But she obliged, whipping the roll of parchment into his awaiting hand.
"Maybe not." Sebastian accepted the offering and delivered a light thwack with them to her pert nose. “You do pull it off, though."
Before she had time to answer with an angry huff or a scathing remark, Sebastian waved the pages in the air in a nonchalant farewell, catching her eye over his shoulder as if he couldn't help but steal every last look he was able.
"By the way! I’ve found Calming Draughts help with the night terrors. You should have Garreth make you some, in addition to whatever else he's been brewing up for you."
How lucky Sebastian was to see the mix of emotions playing across her face before the doors clanged shut and the darkness swallowed him up once again. Even her (admittedly adorable) scowl was insufficient in wiping the grin off his face that lit up the night; a ray of sunlight in a shadowy wood.
Bonus pic of the losers aka the part where Seb gets all up in her space with that dang clover:

Introducing Meri’s pet bird! And some other random things-!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ermie
Named after “Vermillion”, an orangey red color
Colors pending. Has a false eye on their noggin. Maybe more. Idk
Inspired by well… birds. Mostly hummingbirds and little songbirds
Was originally supposed to be Mint’s companion but eh, didn’t work out 🤷. So now Meri has a buddy
Their diet consists of sweets and sugar. Bugs also.
Rescued and adopted by Meri during her travels. Not sure if its when Ermie was still an egg, hatchling, or a young chick yet but eh.
Idk how to summarize how they might work game mechanics-wise but uh
Rideable after a couple days like Oatchi
Can’t really fly, but can double jump and glide short distances
Can climb up climeable walls, but cannot rush
Their tail gains more feathers after drinking nectar and they become faster like a pikmin. Loses tail feathers and the buff when attacked though. Maybe after a day too idk 🤷
Also
Mint and Meri met shortly after Meri crashed on PNF-404. The two stuck together, being non-pik-people (Idk how to say inhuman when they aren’t human tbh) and whatnot.
They become besties and Meri would die for Mint at that point, just as she already would for Ermie.
Mint is touch-starved while Meri is very touch-averse. But Mint grows on Meri enough to tolerate it
Meri came looking for answers to what she is, hearing about wraiths and the other creatures or whatnot. Idk if Plasma Wraith exists in the Pikmin 4 universe. Probably. just not discovered yet but idk- She’s also looking for Olimar in the meantime.
Her ship, the S.S. Crook is one of her pride and joys. There’s a makeshift nest pinned down for Ermie to rest in while they travel. (Named after a Shepherd’s crook, or staff)
Still dunno what timeline would be their canon: Mint encounters the Rescue Corps similar to how the Rescue Corps Rookie, Pom, does with Collin and Oatchi except Pom doesn’t exist so Mint’s doing all the field work. - Same thing as the first kinda, but Pom exists. - Pom exists but they encounter Mint and Meri much much later on.

… I realized that Stefan and Sergio have the same initials. Could you imagine the Rom Com chaotic vibes if Stella accidentally read a love letter written by Wariko or read her diary processing her love for a guy with the initials ‘S.S’.
HSAFHGAHDHFFGSAJFGJAGFF OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
BOTH ITALIANS. BOTH WITH RED-BLACK HAIR/RED EYES, BOTH CAN COOK, BOTH VERY WIFE GUYS
The absolute CHAOS of poor Windblade having to explain an unsent love letter that IT'S NOT SOMEONE ON THIS BASE when Strongarm confronts her about it (REMEMBER! SHE WAS INITIALLY SECRETLY JEALOUS OF THE TIME SIDESWIPE SPENT WITH HIS NEW BLADE-SPARRING PARTNER) and Windblade having to explain IT IS UNSENT FOR A REASON NO ONE CAN KNOW BECAUSE THE DUDE IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD!!!!
And Strongarm is like Oh. OH (BECAUSE WHO ELSE HAS S.S AS HIS INITIALS) . GIRL U DIDN'T 8C
(She does keep Windblade's secret---Windy's GOIN THRU IT RIGHT NOW but Windy's decision-making can be trusted---but tells her to please be careful with where she's threading, because maybe Windy's right about him, but we're in the middle of a war, and we can't afford one of our best to be compromised, y'know?)

2022: AO3 Wrapped
It's December 1st and I'm seeing a lot of Year In Review style posts cross my dash. So I thought it would be fun to look back on a year of fanfic. With the recognition that I have big plans for December, here's a look back at 2022:
Works Completed: 31 Works Started: 35 Total Words: 545,395 Total Kudos: 1,342 Most Popular Completed Work (by kudos): Severance, the Irosami ghost story Longest Completed Work: Severance Shortest Completed Work: Monster, about Azula and little Iroh II Most Commented On Work: Smoke, the Equalist Asami fc Collaborations: 2 (Traitor (friends to lovers) and S.S. Avatar: Contact (space AU), both with @ideklolwat and both Wanorra/Irosami) Gifts: 19 (!! you all are so nice) Breakout fic: The Return, about General Iroh coming back after six years as a POW. I really thought people were going to hate this fic. It's only the third fic with this pairing (Korra/Asami/Iroh II) and the only one that isn't smut. Instead it has the second highest number of bookmarks.
Work I'm most proud of: The Only Thing I Ever Wanted, my take on soulmate AUs with soulmarks. I fucking love this fic. It's sad and gorgeous and exactly what I wanted a soulmate fic to be because screw fate, love who you want.
Work that made me laugh the loudest: There Was Only One Bed about Asami and Iroh's road trip. I cried writing the part about eating the unknown "hank", which we have since determined is alpine walrus.
Work that made me cry the hardest: The Mango Tree, about Mai's death. It's real sad. But honorable mention for the end of Severance.
Work you should give a chance: Captain Meelo's Life-Changing Field Trip where General Iroh invites a drunk adult Meelo to dinner. It's very sweet.
Work that is sending me to hell on a rocket sled: Big Fish where pirate Asami meets merman Iroh. As close to monsterf*cking as I'm likely to get. But mermen are hot, and that's not my fault.
What's your AO3 Wrapped?

What's something interesting to you personally about Vincent's life as a human? Or is there not too much lore behind his past?
Oh where do I begin >=]
He was born in a rather wealthy family. Not rich rich, but richer than most. His father worked in stocks as well as mines, and got a few good scores in the markets. He eventually decided to move his family to the states where most of his mining operations were.
Vincent (who was 5 at this point) wasn't necessarily scared of the ocean, mainly because he was to busy being sea sick ALL the time. He has a low tolerance for sea sickness so those 9 days where torcher for him. Half way through the trip, his father was able to bring him down to the holds of the ship in hopes of him losing his sea sickness. When they got to the engine room, Vincent's sea sickness vanished completely from the sight of that giant iron monster snorting in chorus. If any of you seen a reciprocating marine engine, then you realize the absolute astonishment Vincent had with the thing. This would impact his life by him having a curiosity with anything mechanical.
After they had gotten to the states, Vincent's father had a large house built in an open field, and had Vincent enroll in school. He had a good taste of what bullying was like being that... ya know... he's "different" apparently... yeah the kids in school where a bunch of dicks.
To try and fit in more he tried sounding more American and dropped all words that where British, almost that is. He wouldn't say "Where's the loo" or ask for "crisps" (for all you single minded Americans, loo is "bathroom" and crisps "chips") He could never go full american accent but he settled for a mix of two. He still uses his mixed voice to this day and can go full UK if he wanted, but he's just used to the mixed voice a this point.
From there to 1903 is pretty uneventful. He learned to play Violin at the age of ten and was actually quite good at. Got into art, and began to help build things with his father. He also got an interest for reading those classic novel like "Jules Verne" and "H.G Wells". His favorites being "Around the World in 80 Days", "Master of the World", "The Time Machine", and "War of the Worlds". [You though I was gonna put "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" didn't you. Sike >=]]
1904 his father was going on a business trip back to England. He had done these trips before, and ecationaly he would bring his family with him. This time however, he went alone to New York and left for England. All was smoth sailing and got to England on schedule. Did his work. Then set of back to America on board the S.S Norge... The ship was lost near Rockwall and lost 700 out of 800 passengers and crew.
Both Vincent as well as his mother where both devastated by the news, and this is where Vincents fear of natrual bodies of water peaked. His mother was absolutely heartbroken by the news, but they still had money. When someone dies and there money is in the bank, then that bank is now entitled to that money being that it belongs to no one now. Finders keepers. But Vincent's father never trusted banks, so he kept all the savings in checks and put them in a safe. This meant that now Vincent's mother had to be entitled to the business, and so she did. At the time, men found it odd and in somecases, offensive that a women could operate a full scale business, and Vincent had a few fist fights about the subject, most of which he won, but she ran it, and did a damn good job until 1921.
Vincent would make it an ecation to visit his father's tombstone once a month. A tradition he still keeps up to this day.
Vincent's mother didn't like the idea of living alone for the rest of her life, and that's somthing that stems out to Vincnet later in life quite dramatically. She remarried an industrialist by the name of Jonathan in early 1905 and had a child by the name of Morgan, who was Vincent's little sister. I'm gonna keep Jonathan anonymous for now.
As Vincent got older, he found that kids in school started trying to be his freind, but he was keen in what they were trying to do "Freinds give eachother things right? So what do I of all people have to give but money" he would say. His same attitude was towards the women who would flirt with him and where even wishing to Ummm... "give him somthing he wouldn't regret" if he paid them. This somewhat scard him for eternity, and forever had the notion that someone was always out to get somthing from someone.
When he turned 14, he began working for a small branch of the "Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company". New factories means new jobs, and engineering jobs for that matter. He quite quickly rose up the ranks as being an electrician for the electric dynamos. He wouldn't call himself a young genius when it came to the stuff, he just learned quickly and had a nack for electric energy. He was fascinated by its mysterious force and power, and sometimes experiment with it as well. He got electrocuted many times, but still came back for more. He wasn't obsessed with it, he was just fascinated by it.
From there to 1909 I want to keep anonymous as well just to be secretive X]
So yeah... I just looked at your question again could of wrote you what should of been a simple sentence. But no, I give you a hole damn passage. Hope you don't mind <=]

Captured Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3, 1942. by Etienne du Plessis Via Flickr: On the 22nd November 1939 this BF 109 E-3 of i/JG 76 fell into the hands of the French who used it for comparative tests with their fighters. They then gave the aircraft to the British on May 2 1940 who finished it in RAF colours with yellow undersides and coded AE479. Over a period of 21 months the plane was extensively tested by various units in the United Kingdom. In January 1942 it was dismantled and crated for transit to the USA. It left on 7th April 1942 on the freighter S.S. Dramesford. After arrival it was seen at various bases all over the States until it ended up at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio where this photo was taken.

Leslie couldn't avoid that night forever. She couldn't avoid it for even a week.
"-no, no, no!"
The hands disappeared, and Leslie was awake, gasping into the night. She felt unsteady, as if she were swaying, though she was clutching the sheets, rigid as a mast. A soft hum reminded her it was the ship moving like that, not her, and she flexed her fingers against the covers, feeling them tremble though she wished they wouldn't.
"Hrm... Quiet..."
Leslie winced to hear Tink's grumble, squinting into the dark to see the vague outline of her friend turning over in her bunk. Feeling her cheeks grow warm, she slid out of bed, shaking her hands until her wrists began to twinge. Passing by Kiko's bunk, she breathed in the incense her friend had burned the evening before to help her sleep. Sandalwood. It did nothing to help her nerves. Once she'd grabbed her boots and jacket, Leslie hurried out the door, mindful to pull it just enough to escape but not so far it would creak.
Sorry, she thought at Tink as she aimlessly made her way up the main flight of stairs, I didn't mean to wake you.
As she ascended, she could feel the ghost of hot breath on her neck. The feeling pushed her into flight. She went faster and faster, tripping once or twice but never stopping, and then the stairs gave way to stars, and Leslie gave pause, holding the railing. She wished she'd brought her flashlight. It was dark out here, though not so much as in the girls' room. Out in the open air, she could breathe easier. Yes, she would stay up here until the sunrise revealed the ocean's breadth and reminded her just how far away Vince Redding was from her. She shivered and stepped forward, one hand still on the banister. The breeze off the ocean was sharp and salty and cold, just what she needed. She let go of the railing and tied her jacket around her waist, squaring her feet to keep steady. Even after these past five days, she wasn't fully confident in her sea legs.
Sun, come soon, she prayed.
The S.S. Samaria moved quietly across the waves. The engine of the ship spun rhythmically below the surface, the dark water churning in the sea shadow. Leslie came to the edge of the ship and took hold of the railing, looking up. She could see the stars on high, much clearer out here than over the skyscrapers of New York City. They shone far, far above, so distant Leslie wanted to touch them just to prove they weren't about to go out like a spent ceiling light. The constellations she remembered from her childhood were not there, save for one or two, but even then, she doubted she was visualizing them correctly. Astoria seemed even farther away than those stars. From home, Leslie could see the Pacific Ocean, its waves lapping at the rocky shores, seals playing in the water amidst a vast field of kelp. Now, she stared out over the endless Atlantic, the stars creating a net in the water, a catch-all, a safety. She wanted to jump in and feel the ocean's arms around her, let it wash her all the way around the southern tip of South America and up, up, up to home.
An arm appeared around her back, an arm she had not expected. She breathed in sharp, jumped away, and waved her hands, batting at her visitor. Breathless, voiceless, she turned, ready to spring away, only to find Don staring at her, stepping back. His eyes held terror, but she could tell it was only a reflection- of her. She caught her breath and clutched the banister with one hand, tugging with the other at the sleeve of her jacket where it hung by her knee.
"Sorry," she said, her voice unusually quiet as she spoke into the vast night, "you spooked me."
He looked like he didn't know what to say.
"The stars are nice," she mumbled.
He came towards her, slowly, carefully. It wasn't enough. Leslie met him halfway, tucking herself into his side. He kept his arms around her, both of them, though it couldn't have been all that comfortable for him.
"Why're you awake?"
"I woke up a few minutes ago-"
Leslie breathed in the breeze as it tickled her chin, silent.
"-thought I oughta get some fresh air while the sea was calm. No better time than the night." He studied the side of her face. "It's quiet up here."
Leslie brought her chin up from where she'd bowed it toward her chest.
"Somebody must've gotten you up."
"Hmm?"
"Once you're out, you're out, Don. You sleep like a log."
When she looked, she expected him to be sheepish or amused. Instead, he looked sad. She didn't like it, didn't like supposing it was her that had made him so.
"It was Kiko," he admitted. "She said you screamed in your sleep and woke yourself up."
Leslie tried to look away, and Don pulled her closer into his embrace.
"We don't have to talk about it. Just... Just stand here with me. Breathe."
And she did. They stayed there until Leslie got cold, and then she put on her jacket and stepped right back into his arms. He seemed more content the more she calmed down, so she focused on happier thoughts and the feeling of his embrace, his kindness, his gentleness. They stayed there until the sunrise began to fade the starry net from the sea. She turned her face toward him and saw him standing as if in a state of tranquility. He looked nice with the early light on his face, the freckles on his nose made prominent by the summer's sun. He kept his eyes closed as he drew in and let out one slow breath after another. The sea air soothed her lungs as it did his; she decided he did not look 'nice', he looked like home. She turned her head and leaned it upon his shoulder, feeling her cheeks beginning to warm and not wanting him to see. For a moment, she tried to convince herself it was the sun, the warmth of morning easing her cares.
This is safe. This is good. He is good, so good.
Don's arm shifted ever-so-slightly around her back. The warmth slipped from her cheeks down her neck and into her chest, where it blossomed and spread like the satisfaction of a hot drink on a cold night. The way he held her felt right.
Oh my god.
Don began to hum a little song to himself, one they'd learned in school many years before. Leslie hiccuped, just once. He chuckled through the wordless tune and placed a featherlight kiss on the top of her head where she'd tucked it against his shoulder.
No, she told herself, no, this isn't anything like that. I'm just- I'm tired and I'm still upset about that awful dream and- and last week- and- and-
She broke away, pretending to rub her eyes, hiding from Don.
"I'm- I'm gonna go get some rest while I still can."
His smile was warmth itself.
"Sleep well."
"I'll try."
He squinted at her, studying her face, and Leslie wondered if he could tell her cheeks were pinker than usual.
"If you don't," he promised, "I'll give those bad dreams what-for."
He boxed the air, imagining what he'd do to the devils of her sleep. Though Leslie's laugh was quiet, hesitant, the way he lit up brighter than the sun was anything but.
"If anything interesting happens- not that it’s likely, I mean -I’ll get you up," he offered, but she was already scampering away to the stairwell.
Don, Don, Don...
Attempting to ease her racing thoughts, trying to ignore the way her heart sped along with them, she stopped at the half-open door and turned around. Peeking through the porthole window, she saw he'd stayed right where she'd left him. He leaned with his hands on the railing, calmly watching the sunrise. Leslie felt cool metal on her hand and discovered she'd moved to push open the door without fully realizing it. She swallowed, but her throat was dry and she felt worse for the effort. She squeezed her eyes shut and compelled herself to start down the stairs forthwith, knowing if she didn't, she was bound to give in to this new longing. She wanted nothing more than to run back out there, wrap her arms around him, and bury her face in his chest until she figured out exactly what these untamed feelings may be.
"Leslie?"
"Oh- Penk."
"Hey," he mumbled sleepily, "where're you goin'?"
"Back to bed."
"Ah. Alright. I'll walk ya there."
He took her down the remaining two flights, and she was glad for the company, for the need to make sure her drowsy friend didn't trip distracted her from her heart.
"This it?" Penk asked through a yawn, edging open the door, and Leslie thanked him as she stepped through.
"Goodnight."
"'S morning."
He wrinkled up his nose at her, but then Kiko appeared to see who'd come to the door, hairbrush halfway through her flouncy curls, and he was distracted. Leslie could feel Kiko's gaze tracking her for a few seconds as she crossed the room; her boyfriend, however, was a more alluring engagement to Kiko and so she let Leslie be. Leslie all but threw herself upon her bunk, eyeing a still-slumbering Tink with mild envy, and curled up on top of the sheets with her knees towards her chest. As she shut her eyes, her lashes fluttering minutely with the weight of constraining her emotions, she felt a pair of hands tuck a blanket over her, a blanket that gave off the faint aroma of sandalwood incense. Such a simple, sweet gesture nearly brought Leslie to tears. By the time she'd composed herself enough to utter thanks, Kiko had left the room with Penk, and all was quiet save for Mama E's muffled snoring from the bunk beneath the sole window.
Leslie cupped her hands around her knees and resolved not to think a single thought more until she'd gotten a decent bit of sleep.
