Billie (gnome ardent): We’re the Travelling Trauma Centre. You may have heard of us.

Thaddeus (khajiit paladin): I give him our business card.

DM: He takes it. “An adventuring guild. From Shibanah?”

Thaddeus: Yes. That’s actually why we’re here - we’re looking for you. You know Rynnura?

DM: His eyes narrow. “Yes, she’s an old friend.”

Seraph (siren sorcerer): *quickly* She’s fine.

Thaddeus: She’s got a new job, and her replacement is Nissandril of House Filigree.

DM: He stares at you. “You’re joking. That imbecile?”

Thaddeus: Yes. His officers want him gone.

Seraph: *quickly* They’re not hiring you to kill him or anything - they have some important-sounding position to bribe him with. They want you to take his place.

DM: It actually takes Rynnura a surprisingly short amount of time to get Darratar cleaned up. She imposes strict laws and curfews for a month, lifting them when crime has dropped off and the former thieves have taken to their roles as legitimate citizens. Within three months, the city is reformed, and tentative trade with the next kingdom is beginning to resume. 

Thaddeus (khajiit paladin): Wow. She’s efficient.

DM: She rules strictly but fairly. Next session we’ll jump forward those three months. Since you’re leveling up to paragon tier, your characters can take the winter off to work out what makes those big changes. You can keep in touch, but the party won’t be doing any major adventures until spring.

Godric (fairy warlock): What about Damaris? Does she leave?

DM: She thanks you for everything and promises to keep in touch, but yes, she is leaving. She may return in the future, but she needs some distance from everything that’s happened.

Godric: *heart breaking* I understand.

DM: Rynnura tells the hundred soldiers she has with her to stand down and introduces the two nobles with her, representatives of the noble houses of Gold and Silver. She invites you to sit down and discuss.

Hanako (kitsune bard): We tell her the whole story, right from when we first heard about Therak and saw the wanted posters, to when we came to Shibanah and recognised Esme, to hunting down the generals and ending up in Darratar. I even pull the bodies of each of the generals out of the bag of holding as they come up in the story.

DM: The nobles are vaguely disgusted.

Hanako: Fair enough. I finish with killing Therak and tearing down the Court of the Rat King, but I tell them that Therak’s body was destroyed by a stray fireball and I don’t mention Damaris at all.

DM: They seem to accept this, especially with your rather gruesome pieces of evidence and the chained thri-kreen you’re handing over.

Thaddeus (khajiit paladin): I don’t.

DM: He sniffs. “I understand that you worked for my predecessor, Rynnura, in a somewhat… under the table way.”

Una (genasi artificer): That’s not a way I’d describe it.

Thaddeus: We were official, very much official.

DM: “Yes. Well, I have a job for you-”

Billie (gnome ardent): We have our own guild now, we haven’t been working for the city for a few months. Our prices have skyrocketed since we’re in very high demand now.

DM: He smiles condescendingly. “You will do this job for me.”

Billie: *coolly* We are willing to take commission from anyone we haven’t blacklisted. 

DM: “It’s just a little job, I don’t imagine it will pay that much-”

Billie: You can talk to our guild master to sort out fair payment.

DM: He scowls.

DM: Nissandril has taken over Rynnura’s old office at the barracks, so you can find him easily. Whereas Rynnura always wore chainmail on the job, Nissandril wears silk robes.

Hamish (playing Thaddeus): House Filigree. So he’s an elf, not a dwarf?

DM: No, he is a dwarf. Filigree is quite an important family, but they’ve been looked down on recently by the other houses for taking on airs and thinking themselves better than the others. They’ve taken on a lot of elven manners and names, for instance, but they’re old and rich so nobody can openly mock them.

Andy (playing Una): That’s some internalized racism shit there.

DM: Internalized?

DM: Yep. If you hadn’t helped him fix his cart, Zora would have found him, killed him, and taken the scroll. You wouldn’t have met her in the wild because she’d be off delivering the scroll to Therak.

Adam: ...That would have changed a lot.

Hamish (playing Thaddeus): ...So where is it now?

DM: You can assume it’s ended up in Shibanah, hopefully with the Captain of the Guards.

Godric (fairy warlock): But you didn’t give us this mission, we did it on our own initiat-

Billie (gnome ardent): I grab Godric and stuff him in my pocket.

Godric: Hey!

DM: She smiles at you. “Now the only question is what to do about Darratar. It seems the lawless city is even more lost with its crime lords dead.”

Hanako: It only seems right that the person who organised the takedown should be recognised. Would you be terribly opposed to becoming the new governor of Darratar?

Thaddeus: Woah now-

Hanako: That’s settled then. If the nobles present agree on an emergency appointment?

DM: The representative nobles look a little flustered but have no real choice but to endorse Rynnura as the new governor. She smiles like a cat that got the cream. She says, “Of course, I promised to pay you well for your work.”

Godric: *pops up* Oh, this part I remember. About ten thousand gold each, wasn’t it?

DM: She laughs. Without humour.

Godric: But now she’s made herself governor of Shibanah.

Billie (gnome ardent): She’s also made us embarrassingly wealthy.

Hanako: Godric, my plan was to go back to Shibanah and hand off Darratar to Rynnura. I wanted it to be her problem, because the alternative is that we have to work out how to rule Darratar. Or set up a ruler. Or a council. Or something. And I don’t want that kind of responsibility!
