I read the 2016 Spider-Woman run, and loved it.

I didn't really get into the Jess/Roger romance, but I liked Roger. I liked him going from villain to hero.

So I looked up what he's up to and apparently he went back to being a D-list villain who stole pizza.

And that's why I should never get invested in supporting characters.

I feel like a lot of people headcanon Jessica Drew as bisexual, but I tend to lean more towards lesbian or homoromantic bisexual or aspec and/or arospec with her. I just find it difficult to see her as broadly bi when she keeps not being in love with her boyfriends.

Like in her first relationship we actually really see, with Jerry Hunt, she doubts she's actually in love with him. And he definitely seems more interested in getting physically intimate than she does.

Then she doesn't want to kiss a man she was dancing with.

When she meets Peter Parker, she also seems completely immune to his charms - even though almost every girl he meets is into him.

And then in her relationship with David Ishima, Jess' enemy Morgan Le Fay implies that it's Jess' roommate Lyndsay that Jess is actually in love with, by casting them in the roles of Lancelot and Guinivere.

Jess never actually calls Clint Barton 'hot' even though he calls her hot a lot. Nor does she say she was in love with - only that she cared about him. And she actually seemed scared when they first got together - she had her back to him and her arms crossed. And um...there's also the possibility that she was mostly dating Clint because he was an og Avenger, and she was in such a bad state (after the whole being held prisoner by the Skrulls thing) that she felt like this was a way for her to belong on the team. She definitely talks/thinks more about how unworthy she feels than she does about how much she likes Clint/finds Clint attractive.

When Roger Gocking, who was a really good boyfriend to Jess, confronts Jess about her not having the same feelings as him, she can't deny it. She just breaks down crying and says that she is sorry.

If Jess really is both romantically and sexually attracted to men, this is a really weird pattern. Also, there are just so many female characters in Marvel who seem really into guys and very much express that attraction that Jess feels a lot less interested in comparison.

Like always, Jess is all over the place. She’s getting used to life without Roger while parenting Gerry on her own -- which, isn’t easy considering her line of work. She’s not officially on any team and that’s fine. It gives her time to stay down and gritty on the streets of New York. There’s been a lot of shit in Jessica’s life from her origin to her time as a captive of the Skrull Queen. There’s also the tiny incident where she was recently erased from reality. Normal will never be in the cards for her, but she makes the best of what she has. It doesn’t matter how many times you push Jessica Drew down. She’ll always get back up and spit in your face. It’s just who she is.

✗ CAROL DANVERS (616) is, without a doubt, Jessica’s best friend. They’ve had their disagreements over the years but Carol is Jess’ person. She’s the Kirk to her Spock, her super powered other half. Sure, Jess is friends with Natasha Romanoff and others but Carol’s always going to be the person that Jessica turns to. She loves her, plain and simple.

✗ ROGER GOCKING (616) became a reformed criminal after working with Jess and the two ended up dating. He was the ‘manny’ -- aka male nanny -- to Gerry and an integral part of the family. It was Jessica’s fault that things didn’t work out. She pushed him away when she wasn’t present in their relationship, and Roger went from going to propose to her to breaking up with her. Jess is still getting over it, but she knows it was her fault. She couldn’t be the partner Roger deserved and lost him as a result.

✗ GERALD DREW (616) was planned. Jessica made the decision to go to a sperm bank and have a baby because she wanted a legacy outside of H.Y.D.R.A. and all of her mistakes. Gerry is the very best parts of her and then some. It looks like he’s got some of her powers -- which is going to be a lot to deal with -- but it’s a challenge that Jess will happily undertake. Gerry’s her whole world. She’s move heaven and hell for her kid.

✗ THE ORDER OF THE WEB → It’s not the Avengers or the Secret Avengers or any of the other billion teams that Jessica has been a part of, but it’s what she has right now. They’re not an official active team; it’s more of a necessity that comes up when the spider totems of the multiverse need saving. At the very least, it gives her time to focus on Gerry and helping people around NYC. Anything more time consuming would be difficult to balance.

So hey, Jessica is single now >_>

I’m not sorry to see Roger go, but I do feel bad that Jess always seems to be the one getting dumped/cheated on. Of all the dudes Jess has dated, I have to admit Roger treated her the best and truthfully, I wonder if Jess even knew what she had or what love actually looks like? Also, this isn’t going to do much to help her trust issues and if anything, I would think (and I hope this is explored at SOME POINT) very gun shy of relationships in the future.

I kind of feel bad for Roger a bit here but mainly because of how well this scene is written. (again, really not sorry to see him go)

That said, He’s right, they aren’t partners. Roger, while a good dude who loves and cares about Jess, isn’t quite on the same level Jess is? I dunno. Maybe I”m a terrible person, but I never saw the chemistry there. I always felt like they were together because Boy and Girl, OBVIOUSLY they are in love. Carol and Jess have far more romantic chemistry than Roger and Jess ever did. I liked Roger and Jess so much better as friends.

People make the argument against the CarolJess being canon because female friendships aren’t shown often enough in comics. And that IS TRUE. But, If you look at Carol and Jess, and make one of them a guy? I GUARANTEE you they’d have been married already (likely for the same reasons Jess and Roger were together but at least Carol and Jess have insane chemistry and honestly it’d be hot as hell). and if Roger had been a woman instead? They would have absolutely be regulated to “Gal Pals”.

Anyway, Carol and Jess are both single so Marvel just bite the bullet and let them kiss.
