(via THE SHANNON RIVER AND KING JOHN'S CASTLE)
King John's Castle also known as Limerick Castle is a 13th-century castle located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon. Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John of England in 1200.

Limerick, Ireland 🌊 2023
Taken earlier this year when we had some nice weather... Limerick is a beautiful city that overlooks the river Shannon and is often rather glanced over when people are visiting Ireland. Having lived in the city for the past two years, I've come to really appreciate the beauty of the river and the nearby nature walks hidden away from the bustle.

Sean's Bar is a pub in Athlone, Ireland, notable for its reputed establishment in AD 900, and claim to being the oldest extant bar in both Ireland and Europe. Other architectural and archaeological records, including the Record of Monuments and Places and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, date the building to the 17th or 18th century.
Archaeological research, reviewed by the National Museum of Ireland, indicates that a pub may have been operating on the site for at least a millennium, with the building possibly being older. Carbon-dated material such as mud, wood and wattle, as well as the presence of tavern tokens (of an unspecified age), now on display in the National Museum of Ireland, have further supported "the legend" of the pub's age. During renovations in the 1970s, it was discovered that a back wall was partly made of wattle and wicker.
Other archaeological surveys indicate that the oldest parts of the building were constructed in or around the 17th century, with some more ancient materials perhaps having been scavenged and reused from elsewhere. The latter includes research, including by John Bradley on behalf of the Office of Public Works and published in the Monuments and Places and by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, which suggests that the building dates to c. 1725, while "possibly containing the fabric of earlier buildings".
In 2004, Guinness World Records issued a certificate to Sean's Bar as the "oldest pub in Ireland". The proprietors have claimed to possess a list of "nearly all previous owners" going back centuries, potentially to the time of Luan, after whom Athlone town is named.

Happy New Year, and happy birth year to the Mistress of Mystery herself, Shannon Rivers!

"No one lasts forever, especially given what we do. For most of my life, I was an actress. I would never have imagined any of this. But after the war, there were so many orphaned girls. They needed a home. They needed something to aspire to. They needed hope. All I had to offer them was a comic book hero. But... maybe that was enough."

Clonmacnoise Monastery – Cluain Mhic Nóis | 'Meadow of the Sons of Nós'
This monastery is situated on the banks of the Shannon, it was founded in 544 AD by St Ciarán on a fertile meadow, or cluain, surrounded by bog. It could be reached only by river or along esker ridge known as the pilgrim’s road. The monastery flourished for 600 years as a centre of learning and religious instruction. It also supplied much of Ireland’s finest Celtic art and illuminated manuscripts…

Outcasts & Runaways - Book 2 Snippet
[[Wanted to share one of my favorite scenes from book 2 of my WIP O&R series. =D For context: Barrenger is from another reality and just spend multiple pages angsting. The kids are humans. Lyra is mute but can imperfectly speak using her noise-controlling powers. Brock controls electricity. Shannon has superspeed. Jenny is 6 and can make strange animal critters appear.]]
As his hand closed on the doorknob, Barrenger consciously slipped on the reserved mask he wore in public, feeling it settle over his features like a familiar shield. They’d already seen his mask crack—alright, shatter was a better description—but that stopped now. No matter how bizarre this world might be, no matter how much his injuries still ached and his emotions threatened to rip out of his control, he would hold it together until he had to make his own way. He would not be caught off-guard again.
Barrenger opened the door to small-scale chaos.
“Whooooo!!!” Brock darted past, trailing a strange black rope that crackled and sparked. “Hey, Bear-Guy’s awake! Bear-guy, I found a live power cable!” The sheer glee in the kid’s voice triggered warning flags deep in Barrenger’s subconscious. Black scorch marks lined the concrete floor in a trail behind the kid, and Barrenger felt the absolutely peculiar sensation of every hair on his furry body standing up in a sudden wave of static.
“Puuuuuttt thhaaaat doooowww—” Lyra’s whispering words were louder and more labored than usual, like an irritated and very slow spirit howling at the punk kids invading its castle. It made Barrenger’s ear canals itch. Then a white blur whipped past, and Brock yelled. Sparks flashed a second before Shannon solidified into view with an angry screech.
“You shocked me, you bat! That hurt!”
“I said I was live, serves you right! Who’s scared to spar now?”
Jenny sat on the floor next to the strange lamp [camp lantern], happily surrounded by two colorful, furry creatures and a hulking reptile half as tall as Barrenger. They appeared to be having tea with discarded metal parts for cups. The reptile was yellow, orange, and purple, and had a hat.
There were too many things to stare at. Barrenger looked at the one that felt the least concerning. “Uh . . . Lyra? What, uh . . .” This was going to be harder than he’d thought.
