Goblin’s Gold

I think Beauty and the Beast and Goblin’s Gold are cousins, except one is a lot grosser, yet somehow more serious, than the other.

Kudos to Richard Wilson for playing the goblin so well. He nailed it. On the same note, Angel nailed her parts as well. Her embarrassment around Arthur was so cute and funny. She had great facial expressions and reactions.

The funniest part of the episode was definitely the flatulence bit. Usually that sort of humor’s not up my alley, but the fact that it happened to Uther of all people, who was wearing a hilarious, and not at all period appropriate, aviator hat, and Morgana, the resident Ice Queen, made it a lot funnier. Angel’s reactions were priceless as well. Uther and Morgana tried to act cool and noble, but my girl Gwen looked ready to walk herself to the town square and light herself on fire. It’s not often that Arthur’s the least ridiculous person in a room.

I gotta say that Uther’s baldness and special hair loss treatment were also very appreciated. I was reminded of a scene in Modern Family in which Gloria asked Jay to slap around a chicken in honor of her culture and Jay was too white to realize she was messing with him.

It’s hard to believe no one thought Gaius had been acting strangely. He beat a huge dude, half his age, at arm wrestling and no one called bullshit on that? I suppose no one had a good explanation for Gaius’s behavior, or wanted to get on the bad side of an esteemed member of the court. This was one of the few times Merlin actually tried telling people the truth about magic wrecking havoc in the castle, but, like Gaius always said would happen, no one believed him. No one but Arthur.

Even stranger than no one noticing Gaius’s suspicious behavior was Arthur being the one to figure it out. But let’s not give him too much credit. After Merlin exposed Gaius, it was only a matter of putting two and two together. Surely even Arthur can do that. After all, in what planet would Gaius be so gleeful about Merlin’s death? Uther didn’t notice it because he doesn’t care for his servants, and Morgana was all too happy to see Merlin go.

Speaking of Morgana, the episode got unexpectedly dark during her scene with Gaius. That scene was perhaps the only real thing in the episode, apart from Arwen being lovesick fools. I guess it was undeniable proof that the old Morgana was entirely gone. It was the only time Goblin Gaius got serious about anything.

The episode’s honestly too silly to belong to season 3. In Beauty and the Beast, Arthur and Arwen had some development, so it wasn’t all just nonsense, but this episode is about 99% nonsense. It’s not too bad though. At least, Arthur didn’t just accept Merlin’s execution, and we had plenty of Gwen (and Gaius)!

Gwen was a cutie this episode. She got to help Merlin save Gaius (so, yay for screentime, and, also, I love it when those two work together), and she really had the best reactions. Gwen loves Arthur so much she didn’t even laugh at him when he became a human-donkey hybrid. She thought he looked cute and even tried to pet him but Arthur felt too emasculated to let her (although he was clearly enjoying it). Merlin really had to convince her to face Arthur again though. It’s a testament to their love that Gwen and Arthur weren’t turned off of each other for good after all this; instead, they chose to be mature and pretend nothing had happened. In any case, it was nice, and different, seeing them be silly with each other. But, still, the best goofy Arwen scene is, no contest, the one where Gwen and Gaius stop Arthur from death by bath water. It was a good job, indeed.

Sadly, some of the humor in the episode fell flat. Arthur as a donkey wasn’t particularly funny. It was too ridiculous. He already embarrasses himself enough and looks like a buffoon around 70% of the time. His character was funnier when seriously reacting to Uther, Gwen, and Morgana losing it in the throne room. It’s funnier if he looks like the smartest and most dignified person present; Uther, Gwen, and Morgana are usually very poised, so it was amusing to see them lose their composure. But the donkey bit was tacky, and Merlin’s laughter felt forced.

Familientradition im Geigenbau

Seit Johann Gottfried Uebel im Jahre 1725 im vogtländischen Markneukirchen mit dem Geigenbau begann, hat unsere Familie diese Handwerkskunst bis zum heutigen Tag erfolgreich fortgesetzt. Alle heute in der Werkstatt gebauten Instrumente werden noch immer in reiner Handarbeit und zum Teil aus 100 Jahre alten Hölzern gefertigt.

Neben Reparaturen, Vermietung und Neubau wird eine Auswahl qualitätvoller Geigen, Bratschen, Celli sowie sorgfältig ausgesuchter Geigen- und Cellibögen im Celler Ladenlokal angeboten.

Alle Instrumente wurden vorher in der Geigenbau-Werkstatt fachgerecht und mit grosser Sorgfalt aufgearbeitet.

TYO: Boring or Sick?

And as an extra ask; if you could have another episode appear magically, of the time, what would you want it to be called, and who/what would the music of the week be? Would you have a guest star?

Hi! Aha, giving me the two Madness episodes? And, coincidentally, the two with Vyvyan's mum?

Y'know, I think Boring might possibly be the most surreal episode of the whole run. Don't get me wrong - they're all surreal! It's just once you adjust to general TYO surrealism, I think there's still something quite raw about Boring. There's something more raw about all of series 1 but there are definitely some interesting vibes in Boring. I think there's a lot more going on in the background of this episode than possibly any other episode and the cutaway gag puppets and characters seem more present, not that the boys notice. 😂

Sick, on the other hand, is faster paced. I mean, Boring by it's very name has to be a little slower. Sick is grosser (duh) and it's got a bunch of parodies in it, which I'm always partial to. The focus of Sick changes unexpectedly quite a few times, which is more common in series 2, so we go from "the boys are ill" to "the boys are being held for ransom" to "Neil's parents are coming round to tea" to "this is The Good Life now and we're growing food" to "oh fuck oh shit Rick's killed Neil." And then the end is typically random. 😂

I know a few people greatly prefer series 2 to 1 but I'm actually quite partial to series 1. I like the raw vibes. Neither of these two are my favourite episode, though my favourite does change a bit, and this is quite tricky. At the moment, I'll pick... Boring, if only because when I'm watching Sick I'm aware that there's only one episode left after it.

As for another episode? Hmm well, I suppose a Christmas special would make sense. In an interview from 1985(?) Ben mentioned he'd have kinda liked to do one. It could be called Icicles and a running gag could be icicles inexplicably shooting down from above at them, maybe hitting one of them at a key moment. I'm not really a musical expert for any era so I'll just cop out for the musical guest one and say someone who'd been on Top of the Pops with a Christmas hit whichever year it was filmed. And a guest star? Cliff Richard I think French & Saunders should appear again somehow.

This is a personal opinion but from where I see it the Given movie and the anime itself definitely was... something that I would question because somethings just.. didn't make sense to me. The development of the Characters were either super fast or super slow and it made the pacing really really weird for me idk. But I do think that a huge reason so many people love the Given movie is because of the fact that when you compare Given to OTHER JP BL animes, there's very very slight improvement in terms of the story itself of Given. Is the story poorly executed? Fucking hell, who the hell is going to say no here. But is it better then some of the JP BLs out there? That's depended on how you view BL to be. For a lot of people things like Super Lovers or Hitorijime My Hero are super unbearable to watch because it's "problematic" (which honestly okay, you do you BB) which then leads them to look for BL animes that DON'T have such "themes." Leading them to actually liking things poorly executed but just "not problematic", Given for example.

Given is “not problematic”? Debatable.

Their first kiss was right after Mafuyu finally had a courage to sing a song about his ex who commited a suicide. ???

Problematic doesn’t only mean stuff like “he’s underage”. What about using someone to get over your grief or getting into a relationship with someone who is still not over his ex death and is vulnerable at the moment? Is this suddenly “not problematic” bc they’re same age and he haven’t pushed him into a wall in throws of passion?

To me it’s not even about the fact if it’s problematic or not (it’s rarely not tho, no matter what ppl think), it’s about whether its believable and feels genuine or not. It depends on many factors: situation, characters past, traumas, etc, etc. It depends on the story and how you write it.

Change some stuff and it’s gonna be a completely different thing. Make it like Uenoyama only hugged Mafuyu after the song, even tho he wanted to kiss him, but knows that it’s not the right moment. Make Mafuyu heal first, make Uenoyama be in his own angst that he loves Mafuyu so much for example, but cares about him recover more, so he doesn’t expect for it to go somewhere, then he tries to date someone and Mafuyu first starts getting out there, when he feels like he can start trying again. Someday he gets sick and Uenoyama cancels his date to take care of him even tho it’s nothing serious and then the realization comes. Make Mafuyu kiss him first and take the first step. This would’ve changed everything so much. He should’ve made the first step when he was ready, this would’ve felt so right. Uenoyama kissing him after that song is just.. it feels, I was like ehhhmmm.. weird?

Seeing someone saying that Given is a masterpiece is hilarious to me. The fact that it includes heavy themes like suicide, doesn’t make it a masterpiece, esp when it’s handled this badly. Once again, if you pick such thing as a base for a love story, do it right then, not in a “bibbidi bobbidi boo” kind of thing.

BL or not BL, any relationships, it depends on whether you watch it and it feels plausable or not.

For example, if Yuu says that he can’t live with Mika, my tongue won’t even twist to call it “unhealthy” or be like “dude why”. But if some high schooler in slice of life anime who has a caring family tried to end himself bc his two weeks friend left him, I would’ve yelled “bitch go see a doctor”.

Depending on the story you can sell some feelings or not.

Nezumi and Shion are also problematic according to ppl’s logic these days. But I 100% believe they’re each other’s true loves. Only 11 episodes and it’s sold.

In Given I didn’t believe it. Bc it’s ridiculous, ok? It wasn’t the right place or time to start this relationship. It is not a new love story, it’s just a sad story.

Given movie is slightly better compared to other japanese BL? Why would you offend Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Uragiri wa boku no namae, No.6 and many others?

Also better where? They kept the same old “’stop, i don’t want to’, but he did it anyway” stuff AND on top of that the story sucks.

The way he used him knowing very well that he was unrequitedly in love with him for so long is so disgusting that it leaves a much grosser feeling than many yaois combined. You’re saying “it’s slightly better” bc they’re of age or don’t have an age difference? I don’t get it. It somehow makes everything better?

No, thanks. I’d rather watch Onodera sleep with Takano in high school with them being genuinely into each other and it going great than whatever happened in the Given movie. I don’t care if they’re both 18 there, it made me feel bad.

I didn’t feel bad, when Wei Wuxian thought “why the fuck didn't I have sex with Lan Zhan back when I was 15? I've really pissed away all my days, haven't I?”. I wonder why is that.

Like what you’re saying here is that their opinion on BL is so low that they automatically would give it 10 out of 10 bc it’s slightly better than smth that they find “unbearable” to watch? What kind of evaluation is that exactly? Maybe also let’s compare each anime to “boku no pico”, then everything will look like a masterpiece.

Like excuse me for the fact that when I watch some shonen-ai and yaoi, I judge it the same way I judge any other genre and any other relationships (hetero or gay) in animes. On a scale whether I care or don’t care, whether I believe that they love each other or don’t, whether it’s a good story or not. I don’t get what it means “it’s good for yaoi”. It’s just not good. This movie is trash, I mean, the relationship in it is trash. Who the fuck cares gay or not gay. Trash relationships are trash. Bad story is a bad story. Whether it’s a bad gay story or a bad hetero story, I don’t give a shit.

The reason I’m more into boy on boy ships is because I love the relationships there more than relationships in most heterosexual couples. My fav hetero ships are either “from hate/attraction to love” stories like “gone with the wind”, “anastasia” or “pride and prejudice” or stuff like “equals without pink goo, who only see each other and don’t need no one else and would die for each other, epic soulmates” like Richard and Kahlan. In anime 99% of those fit bromances, not romances. Like I don’t find Midoriya/Uraraka appealing at all for a reason that “she said ‘hi’, he blushed as a tomato, now they’re supposed to be each other’s romantic interests” is not what I find romantic. I find romantic the fact that Todoroki is forever devoted to Midoriya bc he knows he’s amazing and is not afraid to say it; and he’ll always be there for him when he needs him, no matter what it is, him just sitting there crying, some villain trying to kill him or if he’s too late out ther grossery shopping. Uraraka most of the times doesn’t even care where he is.

Most hetero romantic animes, I just find ridiculous, too cheesy and unrealistic and I’m not ready to watch 50 episodes for them to hold hands. I’m not in that age and I also never found things like this romantic before either. Stuff like Kisa/Yukine, when you meet someone, find him attractive, wanna fuck him, then fall in love accidentally.. yeah, that’s understandable to me. Stuff like Takano/Onodera “I was an naive idiot in high school, but now life made me a sassy bitch and I can’t open up to people as easily” also yes, relatable.

When you’re turning into a tomato bc someone said “penis” and think holding hands will take your virginity or smth, that’s not my thing.

So when I watch BL, I expect more, not less. So if it’s bad, I just say it’s bad, I’m not gonna be like “hmm... unproblematic... then 10/10″ like what?

1stly, even “little mermaid” and “cinderella” are problematic.

2ndly everyone is so focused on purity these days, like storyline don’t matter at all. It’s like any great love story is automatically trash if they have age difference. Any trash love story is great, if they don’t?

Let’s then also rate “Dororo” as 1, bc it’s like 24 episodes of them falling for each other while she’s 11 and he’s 16. Wow, such gross relationships they have during the whole story. Doesn’t matter that she grew up at the end of the last episode, the whole anime she’s a child. And let’s rate Noragami 0, bc 2000 years old perverted Yato is into 15 year olds.

No one has to fuck asap (heck even in the same hella problematic “Super Lovers” you talk about, Haru refused to fuck Ren even tho he was 17 in s2 and wanted to fuck another guy) and the rule “you can only fall in love after 18″ doesn’t exist. Also underage is not BL thing, it’s all anime thing. It’s time to shut it already. There are zillions of age gap couples out there who are great. Hyakkimaru waited for Dororo to grow up, it’s fine, seriously, they love each other in the right way, he didn’t want to fuck her when she was 11, okay? They did love each other tho already then. Pls excuse them for that.

3rdly, some relationship that ppl here call unproblematic are 20 times more problematic, than what they call problematic.

4tly, why the heck it’s like couples who have an amazing character and relationship progression, who love each other to death and will do anything for each other, ppl go: “wow, at the very beginning, he grabbed his wrist, he needs to go to jail”. Meanwhile a relationship who has no base, no story, no logical progression, no anything are “yes, best love story in the world”. Yeah... who cares if it feels like it’s all been pulled out of an ass and doesn’t make sense, very healthy tho.

It sounds lately like if most ppl here had two stories in front of them and one would be about two men who just met and the next day one proposed and they lived happily ever after and 2nd would be some complicated incredible story with a natural progression of the relationship, but they yelled at each other once, they’d be like “1st is better”. Well, not to me, no.

Halloween Review #4 — Bride of Re-Animator (1990)

It’s not hard to see why Brian Yuzma was chosen to direct Bride of Re-Animator, the sequel to Re-Animator, Stuart Gordon’s absurdly gory adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s story about a mad scientist obsessed with bringing the dead back to life. Just four years after Re-Animator premiered in 1985, Yuzma directed Society, a movie about a teenage boy who discovers the social elite are all part of a gruesome cult, and it was even grosser and scarier than Re-Animator was.

But Yuzma’s Bride of Re-Animator is not as gross or scary or clear in its messages as Yuzma’s Society or Gordon’s Re-Animator. It’s more a screwball comedy with a horror backdrop than a proper horror movie. Bride of Re-Animator is closer to Scooby-Doo or Young Frankenstein than it is to Re-Animator.

Is that a problem? No, of course not. There’s a very fine line between being horror and humor. Yuzma has a good grasp on the distinction and delivers an enjoyable hour-and-a-half movie that doesn’t drag on too much.

Its cast of characters includes a cartoonishly evil Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) who is more obsessed with reanimation than ever, a Dr. Graves (Mel Stewart) who displays more emotion when a disembodied head insults his thesis than when it comes back to life and a fat, wife-beating, bumbling police officer who misses the obvious clues all around him.

Dr. West reanimates a body only to immediately shoot it in the head with a gun, killing it again. West steals a dead body from the hospital by putting dark sunglasses on it and wheeling it out while propping its head up with his hand, a clear riff on Weekend at Bernie’s (which came out the same year as Society). All while a playful, silly score by Richard Band plays in the background.

Yes, there’s gore. But nothing on the scale of Re-Animator or Society. There are some morals you can glean from the movie — living things are more than the sum of their parts, it’s unhealthy to never let your mistakes go, giving birth can be a traumatic experience — but none that aren’t explored better in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which the movie obviously borrowed a great deal from.

Perhaps Yuzma, in taking apart an H. P. Lovecraft story and a Stuart Gordon film then re-assembling it into something unlike its parents, is telling us about originality of ideas or death of the author?

No, I genuinely think he just wants to make us watch a bunch of gross-out gags and say, “Oh man, that was so gross, haha.” It rules.

PLEASE talk about how the beatles get too much credit

OH Boy where do I even begin. Okay so I got a book about The Beatles, it’s just a fun one with a lot of pictures in it, anyway there is a whole part talking about the British Invasion and how all these bands (The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, etc.) can thank their success to The Beatles popularity in America.

First off, that dismisses the talents of all those groups. Like okay The Beatles have some good songs and albums, I’m not saying they aren’t talented themselves, but they didn’t release Paint It Black or Waterloo Sunset or I Can See for Miles or, you get what I mean. Also, mainly because of my examples, a lot of the British Invasion was mod and The Beatles were most definitely not mod.

It’s objectively funny reading the statement ‘Jagger-Richards is the longest running songwriting partnership but second most successful to Lennon-McCartney’ but like all groups they have some really terrible lyrics among their songs, in all honesty ‘Run for Your Life’ is kind of grosser than ‘Under My Thumb’. And on objective level I would say Ray Davies is probably a better song writer than...

Another thing, even though I have mentioned this before, they used a lot of session musicians as the 60′s progressed. There is nothing wrong with that, a lot of groups do but, I don’t know I think a group having the capability to do most of the work among themselves without having heavy outside help that can only interpret what you want is incredibly underrated and really shows how talented a group of individuals can be.

So I’m going to end this rambling rant with what should be taken away from this and that is Brian Jones > Any/All of The Beatles

I fucking knew it! I gave Alex the cold shoulder when he delivered my mail and what did he do? Came back to hang out. He said Ming and Richard miss me, which is nice, but total bullshit. He meant well. And he looked so sad when he left. He knows he is fucked. He’s just letting his stupid pride get in the way. I shift closer to Beth on the couch in my brother’s apartment. Getting her blabbing about her sister turned out to be the easiest thing in the world. Like a busted faucet, it’ll be harder to get her to shut off.

“I always wondered why she left New York City. I would love to live someplace that cool!”

My jaw drops. Not just at the news, but how she delivered it so casually. She thinks it’s funny! So that’s why she’s desperate to get hitched: all of her debts would be his. “You’re shitting me!”

She giggles uncontrollably, her face flushed under her dark tan. Finally she gets hold of herself. “They found a fake email account where Marissa traded stock tips with a client she was sleeping with.”

“Is that illegal?” I ask. I know nothing about the stock market.

“These ones were. Afterward she was blackballed from the finance industry. That’s when she came back home again—she was flat broke and then some! She can’t even afford a car!”

Fuck me. I thought getting on the wrong side of Daria was bad; I didn’t think it was possible to shut somebody out of a city that size. “So this client guy. What was his name?”

“Jacob something-or-other. He worked at some hedge fund. She also owes an ass-ton of student loans and credit card debt so it’s not like the fine alone is behind her money problems.”

Jacob at a hedge fund. Well that narrows it down. Figures the best dirt would be the hardest to dig up. “Anyway,” I say, lifting off the couch, “I have to get ready for work. I’m running late.”

“I should go, then.” The look on her face hints she’s hoping to stay the night. Not a chance. I can’t imagine anything grosser than going down on a chick. “Are you busy this weekend?”

“Fridays and Saturdays I always have to work. Usually double shifts.”

“And Sundays is always my stupid family dinner,” Beth says.

I see her to the door. “Hey, don’t knock it. My mom couldn’t even be bothered making a turkey at Christmas. We got TV dinners. Anyway, if I get off before midnight I’ll give you a shout.”

“See ya!” Her face brightens. She gives me a hug and then hurries down the back set of stairs.

If the apartment wasn’t so cluttered I’d be doing cartwheels in here. Marissa told Alex she was pregnant. Turns out she’s bullshitting. And here I’m supposed to be the crazy one. I hurry across the living room to Gavin’s computer while the names are fresh in my head. It takes me seconds to look up the woman Connor married. Kayla Robinson. Holy shit. I always thought Marissa was just some gold-digging whore who teamed up with Bridget to get me fired. Turns out she’s a psychopath.

I begin reading newspaper articles covering Kayla’s attack. She was robbed, beaten until she was unconscious, left to drown in this Brooklyn canal. Brutal. Her attacker was never found.

Gavin thinks I should just move on, put more effort into rebuilding my career. Yeah, right. Not a chance when my choice is putting Cashier on my resume or having an unexplained six-month gap. Miscarriage and depression aren’t items you can mention in a cover letter. Bridget’s shit-talking means I’ll never be employed in advertising again and there’s sweet fuck all of a media industry outside of that.

Without proof of Marissa’s violent past, Alex would never believe me in a million years. I doubt he gives a shit about stock market fraud since his dad makes a living keeping those types out of jail. But he might not like that she is up to her ears in debt. Alex has always lived below his means. I need to figure some way for him to find out she’s lying and broke, without it coming from me.

I have to admit that I regularly go to your page just to see Richard skipping towards Paul. It never fails to make me smile! Anyway... About your Richard & Till post: As someone with both autism and ADD, I just want to say please feel free to get into all that!

It's so cute, right? Sometimes I consider changing it but then I look at it and I just can't. It's too sweet.

I always hesitate to talk about how autistic Till seems to me (an certified autism whose SpIn fun fact was autism for like two years I'm not being Like That about it) because a lot of people still think of it as an insult and try to fight over reasons he couldn't possibly be autistic (they usually say it's because he has empathy which, gross, or because he's a 'functioning adult' which, even grosser). I've seen people get vicious over someone asking if Anthony Hopkins is autistic (he is, and pretty vocal about it). It's the dehumanisation.

The thing is though that he has some of the most intense autistic vibes ive ever felt and I know a lot of autistic people. Everything new we find out about him ends up supporting that theory. The same with Richard and ADHD, but that's even more obvious on the surface I think. He fits the stereotypes more than till does.

But yeah I. Hm. I don't know if it's wise to get into that. It's not as funny as the bi stuff (which also gets people so angry).
