Who knew I'd be bawling my eyes out when everyone on Deep Space Nine "dumps" their spare furniture and glasses and booze on Quark after Brunt has taken all his assets... I really must be exhausted and overdue a vacation.

Julian Bashir: Quark, where do you want this?

Quark: What is it?

Julian Bashir: A case of Alvanian brandy. A patient sent it as payment but I can’t accept it.

Quark: Nice try, Doctor, but I don’t want your charity.

Julian Bashir: Oh, it’s not charity. I find it undrinkable. So do you want it or shall I dump it?

Jadzia Dax: Quark. My sister sent me these. I thought you might want them but they’re really ugly.

Rom: They’re not as ugly as the old ones, but they’re pretty bad.

Quark: This is all very amusing, but I can’t start a bar with a case of bad brandy and a set of ugly glasses.

Benjamin Sisko: Quark!

Quark: Yes, Captain?

Benjamin Sisko: We’re doing some structural repair work on level two of the Habitat ring. We need a place to store some extra furniture for the next few months and it looks like you have the room.

Odo: Captain, where do you want me to put all this furniture?

Benjamin Sisko: We have three levels, Constable. Use them all.

Odo: Understood.

Quark: Captain, you can’t do this! Not without paying a storage fee. A minimum storage fee. Practically nothing.

Benjamin Sisko: Send me the bill.

Quark: All right. Don’t just stand there, Odo. Move it all in.

Rom: Look at them, brother. And you thought you had no assets.

Quark: Sisko, Dax, Bashir, Morn? They’re my assets?

Rom: To name a few.

Quark: I guess you’re right. I need a drink.

like imagine going your whole life believing that you’re only worth as much as you’re useful, doing things you know deep down are horrible just to serve the interests of a man who won’t even acknowledge you as his son and then after he exiles you 2 years later you find yourself on your deathbed, all your crimes finally caught up with you, the young doctor who at this point you believe could not have a more different experience of life than you decides against everything you’ve been taught about yourself that you’re worth saving.

and no matter how much you tell him you’re horrible, how wretched you make yourself look in front of him, he doesn’t care. he doesn’t care about your past. you’re forgiven. you’re worth saving, just by virtue of being alive. and he’s not saving you out of pity or even kindness, he’s doing it because he genuinely believes that. and for the first time since you were a small child, perhaps even ever, you feel like you have intrinsic worth.

the charm of early-seasons kira and dax being this side-step from the bickering screwball couple to something just a bit softer because the writers, i feel deliberately, wanted to write them as friends. so both characters have these interactions, especially in this episode, where they find the other one massively weird but they're also ride-or-die loyal, no-questions-asked; "sure-i'll-change-my-whole-face-to-match-yours-and-dress-as-as-a-religious-leader-in-your-faith-to-which-you-are-notably-devout," "well-i-find-that-the-prospect-of-losing-You-supercedes-the-prospect-of-losing-the-creature-you-carry-that-your-culture-reveres-as-a-far-far-worse-outcome"; one orders the other to leave her behind, the other just carries her from harm; one flies a busted ship, one thumps it with a hammer to get it going in some old school engineering hack; both think the other is reckless, both definitely are reckless; both wear their loyalty to each other like an unobtrusive and understated locket---that is until they feel the need to state it Very Loudly. "don't hurt my weird friend. she's weird. and my friend. which are both precious things to me," they say. the charm of sci-fi alien love, is what it is. also feminism.
