How long have you had Toto now? I’ve been enjoying watching his growth bc I’d like to rescue a bird someday. I have a conure atm who I’ve raised since she was first weaned and think I’ve learned enough to handle a rescue eventually. So it’s interesting to see and note how his past stress is showing itself this far in.
(If you’re interested my dream rescue would be a sun conure bc I adore them and so many people give them up just for being loud but I need a house first lol)
Almost 6 months!
So let’s talk about what’s happening with Toto here a bit more in depth since it seems to be confusing a lot of people!
When an animal is rehomed, put in to a shelter, or otherwise experiencing immense stress that stress can suppress their behaviour. The fear, confusion and other aversive emotions they’re experiencing as a result of those experiences piles up and can cause them to appear complicit. They’re essentially so stressed out that they’re unable to express how they’re actually feeling and that can appear like a state of being “fine”.
So when they make it to their new home a standard, healthy, non-traumatized or excessively stressed animal will take less than a month to settle in. They learn their new routines, build trust with their new people, establish comfort in their environment. The first month they’re usually a bit stressed out, a bit wary and all of that shakes off by the end of the month- they adapt to the changes and move along pretty easily. In general, things just get gradually better from a “desirable behaviour” standpoint. Animal is scared -animals gets comfort - animal relieves stress - animal adapts.
In more severe cases there’s so much piled on stress, usually underlying existing behavioural concerns, and typically a history of stressful responses or a lingering fear to behave (consistent use of punishers) that it takes them significantly longer to reach that same goal. It usually takes well over the month threshold for them to begin to accept a new home and release some of that stress.
At this point once the animal is able to feel safe in its environment, it’s new people, etc. that release of stress will start to peel away some layers and show their underlying behavioural concerns. Once they feel safe again they feel free to advocate for themselves, set boundaries and express themselves freely without fear of behaving or stress suppressing behaviour.
It’s a big reason why people will say “my dog does x at home but never does X when they’re at daycare”, stress in the environment suppresses behaviour. They feel comfortable and safe at home so they feel safe expressing themselves in whatever “problematic” manner that may be.
And it’s clear to note here that when this phenomenon occurs it doesn’t always mean the animal has had a horrifically traumatizing past, it’s been found that animals who had perfectly solid well cared for lives prior to entering a rescue had the same issue arise just by merely entering a rescue facility. Rescues themselves are a chaotic, stressful, traumatizing experience- enough so to cause this to happen.
So what does this all mean? And how can we make this transition easier?
It means the animal is finally beginning to feel at home, they’re finally releasing stress and able to be themselves. It is a good thing! It’s a huge milestone! But it does mean that we’re entering the eye of the storm here as more and more stress leaves and more and more behavioural concerns arise. Suppressed behaviours are explosive- note the number of cases where a dog has had a prong collar popped for the “wrong” thing and that suppressed behaviour turns in to explosive aggression trying to attack the handler. The pent up frustration and stress and confusion can explode in very harmful ways and this release of suppression can make them significantly more sensitive to potential triggers.
So for us that means we need to provide consistency, communication, respect their boundaries, and tread carefully. They’re in a highly sensitive state trying to navigate all these previously suppressed feelings, we need to do our best not to trigger them and make it harder for them than it already is. Being extra cautious around their body language, aware of our vocal tones, making a list of current triggers, and utilizing management strategies to live cooperatively while navigating through this.
Each day gets taken as it comes, utilizing compassionate training to help them through big feelings.
With time the effects of suppression will taper out and the core triggers can be isolated and proper training plans can be implemented!

Whump Prompt #1000
Give me the messy rescues. Not necessarily plot-wise but in the sense that the whumpee doesn’t pass out, there’s no quiet moments or vigils, and there’s no serenity of the whumpee finally sleeping. It’s loud, it’s exhausting and it’s messy. The whumpee is coughing up blood, sweating, bleeding over everything, and rambling and feverish and trying everything they can to help. There’s rubble everywhere, burnt clothes coming off in tatters and bloodied bandages unravelled and sticking to everything. This only echoes the chaos of the crew around them.
The caretakers keep them awake instead of trying to stifle it, because at least the whumpee is awake and semi-lucid. At least the whumpee is breathing; even if it’s laboured and wheezy and haggard. At least the whumpee is talking; even if its nonsensical and bordering on hysterical.

Sorry for going missing, but I have two very good reasons why!
Tumblr media
This is Tootie Sue and Edith Ellen, and they were abandoned by their mama on a night that dipped below freezing. My cousin's dog alerted her to them, and she dug them out of a wood pile half frozen, the only two survivors of the litter. They were about 10 days old, so we took them, and between bottle feedings, poop schedules, litter training, and now onto our first wet foods in between naps and zooming around like kitten bumper cars, it's been nonstop :D And I wouldn't have it any other way. I've been working on more CAS CC when they're napping (when I'm not working, that is), and doing my own napping in between, lol. So apologies once again! You just never know what life has in store!

Baby! Girl! Era! Nandor! Save him Guillermo, he’s too precious to be killed by a cult!
ID: one image portraying Nandor the relentless languishing in his 'baby girl' era. He is doing a stretching pose on the ground with one leg tucked under him, knee pointing forward and one leg pointed straight out behind. He has long pink leg warmers covering his legs from under his knee all the way down to the tops of his white tennis shoes. His upper body is upright, chest puffed out under a white 80s style cropped t-shirt that only just covers his chest. On the shirt is a purple design with a circle with two palm trees and a sun. He is wearing blue short shorts with white piping along the hem. One hand is on his hip and he is still wearing one of his rings. It is large, red and gold. The other arm is behind him. He has sweat bands on. His hair is just above shoulder length and is feathered to be fluffy and curly. He is grinning wide exposing his missing fangs, eyes closed and looking for all the world like a man having the time of his life.

Rated: G
Pairing: Blurr/Cody
Word Count: ~1k
A/N: Day two of @heartsandsparksshipweek trouble; aged-up characters, post-canon (ten years post last season, though the series finale didn’t happen)
"Is anybody… available?" Cody's voice comes through the comm hesitantly. Blur immediately opens the line to respond.
"Yeah, I gotcha Cody, what's up?"
"Well," and here Cody chuckles. "I'm sorta trapped."
"Trapped?" Blurr straightens up where he stands. On Griffin Rock, that could mean so many things. "What do you mean you're trapped?"
"I was helping Frankie and Doc test their accelerator boots and they won't turn off,” Cody says. Now that Cody’s said that, Blurr thinks he hears air whooshing by.
“Then you’ve got the perfect bot, baby boy.” Cody barks a laugh over the comm and Blurr smiles to himself. “Where are you?”
"I'm near Doc's house, heading up the mountain through the forest. Though I'm sure how much longer I'll be going up," Cody says.
Blurr transforms the second Cody's answer comes over the comm and starts in his direction. For ‘accelerator boots’ he is still pretty close. A part of Blurr thought he’d find Cody halfway into the ocean. "I've got it, guys. Leave Cody to me."
"Yeah, leave Cody to you." Heatwave's voice is dry.
"Come on, I've been a rescuer for a decade. You can trust me with him."
There is grumbling over the com from Heatwave and Kade. He has no idea what about.
"We do," Chief says. "Just be careful."
"I always am," Blurr says, then picks up speed.
The trees race past as Blurr speeds along the backroads, then through the forest. At this point he knows the island well enough he isn't too concerned about watching his wheels. Instead he keeps both optics out for Cody. The loud, angry squawking noises and birds flying out of the treeline helps. Next comes the sound of something– or someone– crashing through the underbrush. Blurr breaks through a line of bushes and spots Cody in front of him. Yellow is the thing he notices first, outside Cody’s speed. Some type of yellow fabric goes nearly the entire way up Cody’s legs. It has to be the boots. He speeds up.
“Hey, Cody!” Blurr calls out. Cody looks back at him, and Blurr catches his smile before Cody has to turn away again so he won't run into a tree or something equally hazardous at this speed. His spark turns in its chamber at just that brief glance.
“Blurr!” Cody calls back. “I’m glad you’re here!”
“Of course. I’d never miss a rescue that actually calls for my superior speed,” Blurr says. He flashes his lights in a preen and hears Cody laugh for it. It makes Blurr smile internally.
"I need the boots off. Do you think you can catch me?" Cody asks.
"Sure thing," Blurr says. With that, the chase begins. The two of them race through the woods, doing their best to avoid trees and anything else that might get in their path. It goes on for several long minutes before Blurr gets worried about the speed on Cody. (And not because Blurr himself almost feels tired somehow.) If this is a Doc-and-Frankie prototype, he knows it is definitely in the 'pretty safe to use' stage. But humans aren't made to maintain a speed like this like a Cybertronian is. And no matter how much Blurr pushes himself, he can't quite reach him. If he isn't fast enough to catch Cody headon… Blurr takes a sharp right turn. New plan: he'd meet Cody on the other side of the mountain.
Right as Cody crestes the mountain, Blurr comes around the top ridge. He puts everything he has into this move– though he isn't sure how much 'everything' is after so many minutes of doing just that– and bounces his tires to launch himself. Midair, Blurr transforms to tackle Cody. They hit the ground hard together, with Blurr on the bottom and Cody protected in his arms. A sigh of relief leaves Blurr's intake. The boots are still on and they are kicking at his chassis, but at least Cody isn't going anywhere. Now he just needs to deal with the new problem. How does he get the boots off carefully enough that he won't hurt Cody, but fast enough that Cody won't accidentally hurt himself with all the thrashing the boots are still making him do?
"Any ideas to get these off?" Blurr asks.
"There are laces up the sides," Cody says. He lifts himself off Blurr's chassis enough to look down at the boots. Though Blurr gets the impression that his feet are moving too fast for Cody to really see what he is looking for. Eventually Cody just gestures to the boots as a whole and flops back down. "They should be red."
"Alright," Blurr says and reaches for the bow at the top of the first boot, high on Cody's thigh. Just to hopefully make Cody feel better, he says, "I can see it.” And he can. The boots’ speed stands no chance against him, now that they are mostly stuck in place. As carefully as he can, he unties the bow and undoes the laces from the first third of the left boot before he pulls it off. Immediately Cody's leg stops. When Blurr drops it for the other, it falls basically boneless to his chassis. Once both boots are off, Blurr allows himself to also fall back and rest, his intake ragged from the chase.
“How do you always find trouble?” Blurr asks.
“I’d say it finds me,” Cody says. Blurr laughs. That's true enough. Griffin Rock is a danger magnet on its own. But if anyone on the island is also one, it's probably Cody.
“Sorry about the paint,” Cody says.
“Eh, you can fix it for me later.” Blurr shrugs.
The two of them sit there, catching their breath. Blurr feels Cody sigh against him. “… thanks, Blurr.”
“No problem! I'm not gonna just let my favourite Burns run himself all over Griffin Rock,” Blurr says.
“I'm your favourite?” Cody asks after a moment.
“Of course you are. You don't think I stick around for Kade?” Blurr jokes. Okay, mostly jokes. Cody moves again, enough to look Blurr in the optics.
“You stay for me?” Cody asks. There is something serious in the crinkle of his brow.
“Uh-” Blurr resets his vocalizer. “Yeah.”
Cody visibly swallows. Then he lowers himself in the slowest motion Blurr thinks he’s ever seen, until his lips fit briefly over his own. It’s the longest few seconds Blurr has ever experienced. After Blurr registers Cody has pulled away, he has to reset his vocalizer again. And his optics. And his audials, just to be sure. Because he must be seeing things. Except Cody looks away.
“I shouldn’t have done that,” Cody says with a worry Blurr rarely ever sees in him.
“No, no, you absolutely should’ve,” Blurr says quickly. He places a servo on Cody’s back and sits up. A light goes off in Cody's eyes. For the briefest of moments, they almost look like optics. “I’d actually like it if you did it again. Many times.”
"I'd like to do it again," Cody says and leans forward. Blurr meets him halfway. And for a time, they sit there like that. Eventually, though, the kisses slow and Cody breaks away to simply rest against him.
Cody snorts. His gaze is on the ground next to them and Blurr follows it to the yellow boots. Without Cody being in them, they're flapping ineffectually like a dying fish.
“So when they get those fixed, do you wanna have a real race?” Cody smiles at Blurr.
“Of course, baby boy.” Blurr smiles back. “As long as you’re ready to eat my dust.”
“If you think you’re fast enough,” Cody says.
“I was born fast enough,” Blurr says.

Of course, the actual story of how our two new cats, Lucipurr Morningpaws and Mazikeen, became members of the family was a wee smidge more involved. But simplified for the strip, this sums it up nicely.  And while I was the reluctant one, arguing against them, I also fell in love first AND came up with their names, so I bent like wet pasta. lol
