The new issue of The Atavist Magazine, by Rae Nudson, is about an ob-gyn in Virginia who took advantage of his patients and performed unnecessary surgeries for decades.
She requested her medical records and was stunned to find discrepancies with what Perwaiz had said to her during appointments. Most glaringly, she didn’t see any mention of precancerous cells on her cervix; the tests Perwaiz performed on her had come back normal. “If I was normal,” Debra said, “why did I have a surgery?”

By the way, gonna remind folks that trolling and harassment and making things harder for people in instances by deliberately goofing around and getting random folks killed are reportable. It's being disrespectful of others' time and play in general.
And the GMs in FFXIV respond to such reports and take them seriously.
Like, accidents happen when it comes to AOE markers for sure. People get turned around, or panic.
It's really damn obvious when a tank is chasing healers and DPS with an AOE tank buster. Multiple Times.
Standard behavior with a tank buster? Tanks move forward, everyone else moves back. Or tanks stay put while everyone else scatters.
Once? Sure, maybe the tank got turned around, and/or just kept moving in the same direction as some other folks, it happens.
Killing almost an entire Alliance party cuz you are obviously, deliberately chasing an entire group to the back of the platform that are trying to get away from you? Moving with the people in the group to catch as many as possible?
We are reporting you for trolling/harassment.
They got called out in chat for the obvious behavior, while also asking another Alliance to rez us cuz they got all but our tank and a melee, and one or two folks from the other parties, too. Had to use our LB3 on a Healer Rez when we could have used it on the boss, not to mention our DPS on the boss at all.
Just made the fight last longer for everyone for no good reason. In the brand new content folks are still learning and gearing for, too.
So yeah. Reported. Cuz it can be, and hope they enjoy the GM scolding.
Play those games with your friends, in runs that are mostly friends. Dungeons and 8man raids are a good place for it. If doing it in Alliance? Best to be a full Alliance of folks agreeing to a shenanigans run. We've had nights between pals where we try to murder each other in fun ways in raids, and have some stories of particularly legendary ones (there's a story of Eden Leviathan that's a favorite in our FC).
But even though this person was from our same world--we don't know you. So it's not cute or funny. If you don't like us--deal, it's a random Alliance raid, no one has to talk to each other, we're not in the same party, just do the job and move on with life.
Instead of getting a flag on your account as a problem. But if you get banned for such behavior over time, I'm certainly not going to cry about it.
And for the rest of you: If people are obviously, deliberately, making your instances a pain due to language, or actions that are intentionally getting you and others killed? It can be reported. Use the Support menu option and the Contact Us feature, there's options for it.

"I didn't exactly say--"
"In my experience, Miss Cripslock tends to write down exactly what one says," Vetinari observed. "It's a terrible thing when journalists do that. It spoils the fun. One feels instinctively that it's cheating, somehow."

tumblr desktop lets you block users when you report them, so that it's a one step process, but on mobile you have to block and report separately. could we get the combined report+block function on mobile as well?
Answer: Hello, @wovenstarlight.
Now that’s a great idea! Fingers crossed it happens. We’ve noticed this on the Android app, and it’s super annoying.
We’re not sure what team could pick it up anytime soon though, but we hope that this one gains traction. Keep eyes here or @changes for any news.
Thanks for your question, and keep the feedback coming!

See how they remove Israel as the perpetrator in these reports? A school-turned shelter "was damaged", killing people, "this comes after heavy bombardments in the area", "she was displaced and killed"... There is no mention of who is doing all the killing and war crimes.

Hey, do you know how to report sites condoning animal cruelty?
I'm not as familiar with reporting this, so here's what I found after looking into it:
I believe you can report this to the FBI tips website
The Humane Society has a contact form:
If you witness suspected cruelty to animals, call your local animal control agency as soon as possible or dial 9-1-1 if you’re unfamiliar with local organizations. If you make a report of alleged animal cruelty, the responding agency is required to investigate. If your area lacks the proper animal welfare agency and your local authorities are not equipped to deal with animal cruelty cases, you can also contact us. Be sure to document the case as well as you can with dates, times, specific details and, if possible, footage and photographs from a cell phone. All of these things can help appropriate agencies during any investigation they may do of the suspected cruelty.
It seems to me that if you don't know any details about the location this occurred in, reporting it to the Humane Society and the FBI tips line is your best bet.

I don't understand the people who say they don't trust "mainstream media" but then cite random people on twitter and small "news" sites that no one's ever heard of. Do you...think those are somehow more reliable?
Especially when the stuff they claim the "mainstream news" is doing wrong is...how responsible news works? Like saying "alleged" when they haven't been able to verify a claim themselves (even if it seems obvious to us)? Issuing corrections (instead of..what? just never making a mistake and always getting it right the first time?). Or the most baffling, "why isn't the news talking about this?!" when I literally just read it on NPR or CNN's websites and they addressed the exact same angle?
You know how many times I check the notes on some popular "the news is hiding this from you!" post and a few people actually bothered to check the sources and it's some far-right nazi thing? The left is not immune to this. Please don't reblog things without checking if the sources are actually legitimate. If you don't have time or energy, just...don't do it. No one will get upset with you for not publicly stating your position on every topic.
And maybe try reading some real news on actual news websites to get an idea of what's actually being reported on or not. Cable "news" channels are not news, some are literally classified as "news entertainment". Regular reporting does indeed have problems, not enough research, important information or perspectives do get missed more often than they should, pressure to put out content that's not fully developed, TV new reports focusing on just a narrow range of stories. I have seen this myself, I know people are not wrong to have criticisms. At the same time, we in the US do not actually live in a totalitarian state where the government controls what the news reports on, and people working in news are not mindless propaganda machines. The idea that the news can't be trusted has deep roots in far right goals of dismantling anything that doesn't support their predetermined conclusions. Please stop handing control over to them by repeating their lies and exaggerations about the extent of the problem. If your "proof" of how bad the problem is ends up just being someone else's propaganda, you're only doing more damage. To get an idea of the real extent of the problem with news, you need to actually read the news.

What's the best way to report bots? On mobile the only real options are spam or explicit content, and some bots are both. Is there a way you could add an option to specifically report bots?
Answer: Hello, @dilact!
If it looks like a bot, you suspect it might be spam, or it is trying to get you to click on a link, simply report it as a bot or spam. If it is something that is a very explicit image, but otherwise not really spam, per se, just report it as adult. That’s all there is to it: don’t stress it. We will take it from there.
Great question, and an important one, so thank you. Keep the feedback coming, folks.
Best,
—Echo, Code Witch

Israel and Hamas have reportedly agreed to a four-day ceasefire which will entail the release of 50 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for 150 hostages held by Israeli forces.
In an article titled “Biden admin officials see proof their strategy is working in hostage deal,” Politico describes the deal as “the administration’s biggest diplomatic victory of the conflict” and reports that White House officials are calling it a “vindication” of Biden’s decision making. Which is an entirely inappropriate level of verbal fellatio for an achievement as minimal as not murdering children for a few days.
Tucked away many paragraphs into this report is a sentence which is getting a lot of attention on social media today saying that according to Politico’s sources there has been some resistance to the pause in fighting within the administration due to fears that it will allow journalists into Gaza to report on the devastation Israel has inflicted upon the enclave.
“And there was some concern in the administration about an unintended consequence of the pause: that it would allow journalists broader access to Gaza and the opportunity to further illuminate the devastation there and turn public opinion on Israel,” Politico reports.
In other words, the White House is worried that a brief pause in the Israeli massacre of civilians in Gaza will allow journalists to report the truth about the Israeli massacre of civilians in Gaza, because it will hurt the information interests of the US and Israel. They are worried that the public will become more aware of facts and truth.
Needless to say, if you’re standing on the right side of history you’re not typically worried about journalists reporting true facts about current events and thereby damaging public support for your agendas. But that is the side that the US and Israel have always stood on, which is why the US empire is currently imprisoning Julian Assange for doing good journalism on US war crimes and why Israel has a decades-long history of threatening and targeting journalists.
During Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza in 2021 the IDF reportedly targeted more than 20 Palestinian press institutions in the enclave, as well as the tower hosting the international outlets AP and Al Jazeera. During this current onslaught Israel has been killing dozens of Palestinian journalists, sometimes by actively bombing their homes where they live with their families. The IDF’s campaign to wipe out inconvenient news reporters has resulted in the Committee to Protect Journalists calling this the deadliest conflict on record for journalists anywhere, ever.
Both the US and Israel have been attacking the press in this way because their governments understand that whoever controls the narrative controls the world. They understand that while power is controlling what happens, ultimate power is controlling what people think about what happens. Human consciousness is dominated by mental narratives, so if you can control society’s dominant narratives, you can control the humans.
This is why the powerful have been able to remain in power in our civilization — because they understand this, while we the public generally do not. That’s why they bombard us with nonstop mass media propaganda, that’s why they work to censor the internet, that’s why Julian Assange languishes in prison, that’s why Israel routinely murders journalists, and that’s why the White House is afraid of what will happen if worldwide news reporters are able to get their cameras into Gaza.

I feel that if journalists and our elected officials continue asking economists for their advice and input on things like climate change as if they know something we are all going to die.
NPR for example - they routinely invite economists to opine on all kinds of shit that they clearly do not understand, including supply chain management, waste, sustainability, and then proceed to nod sagely to whatever these guests say while agreeing "it remains to be seen"
totally worthless reporting
many of these apparently professional consultants have been fundamentally wrong time and time again. most of them refuse to learn from past experience and cleave to their chosen school of thought, but are quick to frown and stroke their chins in order to appear wise to the general public which has absolutely no understanding of the stock market, lobbying, international finance, etc.
the first thing I would say to these reporters and anchors is that
Economics is Not a Science
economists should not be treated as if they are scientists, and economics should not be compared to objectively verifiable scientific research which is peer-review and updated without obvious financial incentives
market factors and conditions are incredibly complex and volatile - some of them are based on mathematical glitches and nonexistent regulation
and while millions of people study them and companies all over the world pour billions into data analysis, it should be understood that these are arbitrarily created by humans to justify a fundamentally broken system that serves few at the expense of many, and refuses to acknowledge environmental concerns or capacity to support this system
there are certainly hordes of investors, bureaucrats and managers that pay close attention to what Moody's or Standard & Poors may say about the viability of a fund or stock
almost as if these same ratings agencies were not proven to be corrupt and fully complicit in the market collapse of 2008 and earlier incidents, which you would think a decent journalist would pick up on at some point
economics could more accurately be described as a game where the rules can often simply be broken or ignored by the player with the most money
I can appreciate that people want to learn more about this subject and end up working as an economist or analyst
but they should not pretend that they are scientists
economics is a game
