Three favorite entertainment venues from the days of a prolonged adolescence.
July 12, 2012
People of my generation all have their favorite concert venues, from the Grande Ballroom in Detroit (which I never stepped foot in) to the Fillmore West in San Francisco (which I did). However, when I look back, it's the small clubs and bars with live entertainment that occupy a special place in my heart. Three of my all-time favorites include a Lansing dance club, a Detroit jazz bar and a Dearborn rock 'n' roll bar. Here's what I recall about them:
Grandmother's. When I was in college, the most popular night spot near the MSU campus was the Coral Gables. It featured loud bands. Pretty girls. Twenty-five cent hot dog night And, best of all, fifty-cent quart night. Almost every old Spartan has a story about "the Gables." But during my junior year a different kind of place, Grandmother's, opened near the Frandor Shopping Center. It became my favorite haunt for the high-energy R&B bands it attracted from Chicago. Every time Baby Huey and the Babysitters, with their tight horn section, or Spot and the Blotters (Spot was black, the Blotters were white) came to play, Rick Budd and I were on the scene. Also, Grandmother's occasionally brought in name acts--groups such as the Soul Survivors, the Shirelles, Doug Clark and His Hot Nuts. The music always took us higher, and sometimes farther, like the time we met a dude as the bar was closing and followed him to a Lansing after-hours joint in Rick's '55 Ford pickup. But mostly I remember the night that my roommate Skip, buddy Caico and I went to Grandmother's to see a performance by the Capitols, the one-hit wonders of "Cool Jerk" fame. After last call, we returned to our Burcham Woods apartment where Caico, much to my amazement, pulled off his coat to reveal a gold sequined waist jacket underneath--part of the costume worn by one of the Capitols. That was Caico for you...and just another night at Grandmother's.
Cleave's Lounge. During the mid '70s, I spent many a cold and gray Saturday afternoon at Cleave's Lounge in Southwest Detroit for its weekly jazz jam sessions. Located at the corner of Visger and Electric, the place could be just that--electric. Neighbor Jim, a music maven who lived above me in a five-unit apartment building in Dearborn, turned me onto the place. Cleave's four-hour jam sessions were run by tenor saxophonist Dezie McCullers Sr. who had toured with Dizzie Gillespie and had been one of Motown's first session players, aka Funk Brothers, in the late '50s. The McCullers were the consummate musical family. Dezie's wife had a classical music background. Dezie Jr. played alto sax and went on to front groups of his own in Phoenix. Younger brother Franklin could wail on the trumpet and played the drums. Franklin had played with Wild Cherry and eventually worked with Michael Henderson, the Dramatics, Four Tops and many more. The baby of the family, Althea, studied classical music at Howard University, but I never saw her play her instrument, the flute. However, online investigation indicates that she has released at least eight jazz CDs, under the name Althea Rene. Musicians would walk in and out of Cleave's all afternoon during those Saturday sessions, and someone usually showed up to play the bar's Hammond B3. Each McCullers family member and practically every other musician took a turn soloing. The jam traditionally ended with a 15-minute instrumental version of Grady Tate's "Sack Full of Dreams." It always knocked me off my feet. The cats at Cleave's were some of the most talented musicians I have ever been around. I doubt that any of them ever made much money playing Detroit clubs. They did what they did because they loved it. And I, in turn, loved their music.
Your Mustache. I could walk to "the Mustache" from my apartment on Appoline in Dearborn. The house band, Stix and Stoned, played there for several years and delivered more sound per band member than any three-piece group I have ever heard. Drummer Marcus Terry had played with the Royaltones in the early '60s. After he left Stix and Stoned, Marcus toured as Jose Feliciano's drummer. As of 2018, Sal Garcia, Stix and Stoned's bassist from Pittsburgh, was still performing in Sarasota. Lead guitarist, singer and frontman for the group, Bobby Lewis, had been with the Headliners who recorded two records on Motown's V.I.P. label in 1964. After Stix and Stoned, Bobby had a long run with the Crackerjack Band and was invited to audition in Las Vegas to become a member of Chicago. (He didn't make the cut.) It would be a slight to call Stix and Stoned a cover band. They had some commercial success with an original tune called "Rouge Plant Blues," and most bar bands wouldn't even consider including Harry Chapin's "Taxi" in their repertoire. But the group's amazing interpretation of the song always held the crowd. The Mustache seated about 300 people--no dance floor--and the house was packed almost every night of the week. Now, here's where the story gets personal. Pal Joe and I walked into the place "toasted" one night and were able to score a table a few feet from the stage. The band members regularly bantered with the crowd, so I yelled out that we'd like to sing "What's Your Name" with the group. Much to my amazement the guys called us up on stage. "What key?" asked Bobby. "I have no idea," I said. We just started singing. Luckily, Joe and I were "on" that night. And the band fell right in. Minutes later, as we walked off the stage, with everyone hooting and hollering because two Bozos had gone up and actually done a creditable job of harmonizing with the group, Sal yelled out, "Jan and Dean," ladies and gentlemen...Jan and Dean." That little gig turned out to be the first of eight or ten raucous appearances we made with the band over the next couple of years. One night most of the guys on our softball team and a posse of friends showed up to hear us debut a new song, "We Belong Together" by Robert and Johnny. Our attempt at harmony was a disaster as we failed on three tries to get it right. Somebody in our group brought a cassette player and caught the moment on tape. As we botched the tune you can hear the drummer, Marcus, say for everyone in the crowd to hear, "Are you guys on drugs?" After that momentary debacle we switched to "What's Your Name" and were immediately on key. On the tape you can hear the place going nuts as Sal encourages the crowd and yells out, "It's the golden one..." Damn, I lost that tape in our house fire.
I don't get out to hear live music in intimate settings much any more, although there's a popular "listening room" near our home that serves cocktails and brings in small groups and talented singer-songwriters. I've been disappointed only once in the 10 or 12 times Debbie and I have visited the place. Sometimes, when I sit there, listening, I think back to the best live music moments of my life. I never paid a cover for any of them, but I can't put a price on what they mean to me today.

DCEU recast/fancast
Like my MCU recast/fancast and for fun, if I could recast anyone, I would choose this.
Few things first.
This will just be recasting the current DCEU, for a more in depth recast, see my old one
Barry Allen will not be the Flash in this, it will be Wally West
Recasting Steve Trevor so Chris Pine can be Hal Jordan
Jason, Ray and Joe are the only ones returning in my recast
I love Henry as Clark, but WB cannot make up their fucking minds if he’s staying or going and we need ONE definitive Batman and we do not need a Anti-Palestinian as Wonder Woman
My version of Birds Of Prey is about Barbara, Dinah and Helena coming together to stop Lady Shiva and Cain and it ends with Cassandra saving Barbara from Cain and Barbara begins to train Cassandra as the next Batgirl and Barbara taking the mantle of Oracle(Black Mask will make an appearance to hire Cain to assassinate someone, but that’s it. Worldbuilding to show who runs the Gotham Underworld)

*****
Paul Reubens is touring with Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
*****
Al Franken is touring.
*****
Keenan Thompson and Hasan Minhaj are bringing comedy back to the White House Correspondents dinner on April 5.
*****
Days alert: There is some casting news but most of this won’t show up until the fall. Word is a couple of newbies will be Remington Hoffman who will play Li Shin, son of Mr. Shin and Emily O’Brien may join the cast. Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) may be on her way back. Let’s bring the original Phillip back for her!!! Brandon Barash (Stefan) will return as well as Louise Sorel ( Vivian )and Alison Sweeney ( Sami). Judi Evans is headed back. Will she play Adrienne or Bonnie?? It looks like Casey Moss (JJ), Freddie Smith (Sonny), Chandler Massey (Will) and Galen Gering (Rafe) mill head out for awhile.
*****
It looks like Friends freaks will finally get their reunion on HBO. I am glad they aren’t bringing the characters back and are just getting together to talk about their time together.
*****
Downhill hit theatres on Valentine’s Day with Will Ferrell, Julia Louis- Dreyfus and Zoe Chao. The film was written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash.
*****
The more I see of it, the more I LOVE Stumptown, the best show that nobody seems to know about. Please renew ABC!!!!!
*****
So.. Rush Limbaugh got the Medal of Freedom.  Oh my.
*****
Shadow Inc. owned by former Clinton and Obama staffers made an app that thoroughly fucked up the Iowa caucus. It was good at calculating the results but not delivering them.  And hey.. Wolf Blitzer, stay off the phone with people that are trying to get those results. Let them just do their job!!
*****
Brooklyn 99 is back and Vanessa Bayer is there!!!
*****
Rod Blagojevich is out and hitting every show that will have him. Trump pardoned him along with 10 other criminals including Ed DeBartolo Jr., Mike Milken and Bernard Kerik.
*****
Forty thousand kids won’t get free lunch because Trump threw them off food stamps. The two usually go hand in hand. Getting food stamps automatically sets a kid up for the free lunch program.
*****
Over 1000 former DOJ officials have asked Bill Barr to resign.** 70 former Senators have written an open letter to congress to tell them they are not fulfilling their congressional duties.**” Yoo Hoo! Bush, Clinton, Carter, Obama, you’re up.” –Patricia Arquette
*****
Pete Davidson and Kaia Gerber have split.
*****
Indiana Beach is closing after 94 years.
*****
Denny Hamlin won the 2020 Daytona 500.
*****
Can’t we get some real gigs for Rainn Wilson and Curtis Armstrong? Ok, so Cyrtis Armstrong was on Stumptown so thank goodness for that! They can do better than Dominoes and Little Caesars ads. And how funny is it that Dominoes, known for its very Chrustian owners use a Risky Business ( a film about prostitutes) ad for their product. Hmm.
*****Hey.. Comics, quit bringing up Trump and his former womanizing. It didn’t work with Clinton and it won’t work here. People just don’t seem to care. Focus on the real damage he is doing.
*****
Scary Clown is working on opening nearly a million acres of land in Utah for energy exploration that had been a National monument. Redford and Romney can’t be happy about that.
*****
A new animated series from a brand new production company owned by Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph looks promising. Look for The Hospital.
*****
Southern Illinois University is giving Bob Odenkirk an honorary degree.
*****
Ukranian immigrants Lt. Col. Vindman and his twin brother are out. Ambassador to the EU Sonland is out.
*****
The Democrats had a debate on Feb. 7 . At Andrew Yang’s first chance to speak, he rehashed his stump speech. I mean, c’mon give us something new. There really seemed to be a restrained nervousness on the stage that night. Klobachar seemed too needy but she got great reviews. Biden called Buttigieg ‘a friend ‘ a couple of times. Mayor Pete did quite well. ** Deval Patrick is out** Andrew Yang is out.**Michael Bennet is out** Another debate was on Feb. 19.** Bloomberg/Yang? Is this true?
*****
Check out the new series, Hunters. It is awesome, funny and terrifying!
*****
Dozens of Native American women and girls have disappeared from Big Horn county, Montana over the last few years. The victims were later found dead and Trump has put a federal task force together.
*****
Grassley and Wyden are trying to get lower prescription drug prices but Moscow Mitch won’t bring the proposal to the floor. Others are looking to get some traction on HR3.
*****
JSW Steel has sued the Trump administration for refusing to exempt it from paying the levies on slabs of steel that the company imports.
*****
64 women have filed sexual harassment or discrimination lawsuits against Mike Bloomberg. I’m not a fan of the guy but it does seem sort of coincidental.  It does not seem to matter cuz all his ads seem to be working, he is picking up steam. Tom Steyer is gaining a bit of momentum as well.
*****
The corona virus has brought us Covid 19. 600 people are being held in quarantine camps that the military has set up.  Italy has new cases and the disease is spreading. Scary Clown is trying to spin it all.
*****
ICE is being sent into sanctuary cities to cause trouble for immigrants.
*****
You have to check out Horse girl with Alison Brie, Molly Shannon and Matthew Gray Gubler on Netflix .
*****
Rapper Larry Sanders AKA LV is letting us in on a miscarriage of justice he has had to live thru. LV, best known for his work on Coolio’s Gangsters Paradise, was approached by police and later put on the Calgang database. The practice put about 80,000 mostly African Americans on a sort of gang list. In a 2016 audit it was found that there were many inaccuracies including the names of babes who could not possibly be gang affiliated.
*****
Nature does not need people. People need nature. –Harrison Ford
*****
The Clark bar is back. The roll out has started in Pittsburgh and will soon spread across the country.
*****
Scientists have found some turtle fossils that are the size of a car in South America.
*****
U can donate to the Trump campaign and may win a yaqut and hunting trip with Don Jr. The Beach Boys will perform.
*****
The Oscars were held Feb. 9. Brad Pitt and the production design team won for Once upon a Time in Hollywood. Woo Hoo! Word is that Pitt has hired a speech writer to write his acceptances. JoJo Rabbit won for adapted screenplay. Little Women won for Little Women and Toy Story 4 for animated film. Laura Dern won best supporting actress. Renee Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix too home the top actor prizes. Parasite surprised everybody and won best pic and got Bong Joon Ho a best director statue. My best dressed were Billy Porter, Antonio Banderes and his date, Janelle Monae ( her opening seemed to make some in the audience uncomfortable), Robert DeNiro, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Geena Davis, Regina King, Charlize Theron, Adam Driver, Joanne Tucker, Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Kathy Bates, I don’t know what Kristen Wiig and Idina Menzel were thinking. Wiig always has a unique style so I have to admire that. ** The ratings were down. I have heard people saying they just don’t watch award shows or late night shows anymore because they are afraid things will get political. Funny, that is part of the reason I watch!
*****
Tom Papa was pontificating about a real dog show that should have REAL dogs. It would make a great weekly show with people bringing on their dogs.
*****
The goalies of the Hurricanes were out of commission and David Ayres, the Zamboni driver was brought in to help and the won against the Maple Leafs. Woo Hoo!!
*****
Hooray for New Hampshire and their use of paper ballots. Things in the campaign got a little shook up with Bernie taking the top followed by Pete and Amy.
*****
2 years of research in Canada has brought the announcement of a new discovery. Skull fragments  that were cleaned and collected about 10 years ago have been named Thanatotheristes or the reaper of death. The discovery helps us all learn more about the early times of Tyrannosaurids, a sub group that includes T.Rex.
*****
New Jersey has a ban on self- serve pumps and another state is talking about getting in on the action.  The gas station attendant act has been proposed in Illinois.
*****
Van Jones was right when he said we shouldn’t give Trump any press coverage for a week. He would hate it. Trump loves the old adage of bad publicity is better than none because he just must have attention. It would never work for they just can’t resist.** Joe Mcguire is out after he warned of Russian interference. If you want to keep your job in this administration, do not tell the truth. Now at the Department of National Intelligence is Johnny Mcentee , a 29 year old former football player who worked on the campaign. He immediately called department heads and said he wanted lists of never Trumpers in their offices. ** And who is in charge of weeding out the people in the government who may be disloyal to Scary Clown? Well, it is none other than Virginia Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice Clarence. She calls it the list of snakes. Trump is now saying he even wants liberal judges on the Supreme Court to recuse themselves when it comes to “Trump related cases”. It just keeps getting worse.
*****
Trump had fun in India. He should, his business has 5 projects going there right now worth 1.5 billion.
*****
Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape and criminal sexual assault. He was not found guilty of all the charges that included predatory behavior.
*****
Andrew Yang is a new correspondent at CNN. He tells us that he is getting word from former donors that Bloomberg is calling those big donors. Allegedly he is telling them they do not have to donate to his campaign because he can afford his own campaign but he still won’t forget them. He would like them to save their money and not give money to other democrats running either.** And I am so sick of talking heads trying to tell us to play it safe. We are not as stupid as we look, thank you!! ** Now there is a firestorm about Bernie telling the world that the education program that Castro implemented was a good thing. I understand the anger and it could not have come at a worse time and he did it to himself. BUT..  We are adults and we have to be able to talk about things as they really are, not in sound bites. Castro sucked and history teaches us that bad people do good things occasionally and good people do bad things once in a while. ** It seems that everyone was in agreement that we would all gather behind the winner of the democratic campaign to beat Trump. Suddenly when it could be Bernie, everybody is bitching.
*****
This month held 2 more Democratic debates. The Nevada debate got pretty heated. I see that Mayor Pete and Bloomberg are lefties (left handed that is). Pete always looked poised and articulate which I appreciate and he got in a good one when he mentioned that the party should choose someone who is actually a democrat.  Bernie seemed a little rattled by that. Later Pete really dressed down Amy Klobuchar and made himself look like a dick. Joe Biden jumped in with his credits occasionally but often seemed a bit lost. He slammed back that they were all talking about the health care plane he helped to create and that he himself had dealt with the Mexican President. His name came up after it was mentioned that Amy could not remember the President’s name. The gloves were off with Bloomberg as Elizabeth Warren called him out on Billionaires and NDA’s. I loved the interaction but realistically Mr. Mike can’t just release people from agreements they made in an NDA, especially if it did not involve him. Bloomberg sounded pompous and clueless about the world outside of his company. He got a moan when he said he couldn’t exactly use turbo tax and when he said he may have told a few jokes that women didn’t like. He brushed off his taxes much like Trump does. The former mayor of NY called out socialists as communists. Klobuchar had the best comeback of the night when she was told her health care plan could fit on a post it. She proclaimed that the post it was invented in her state of Minnesota. Again, there were people shouting from the audience as Joe tried to talk. C’mon give everybody an equal chance.
*****
The South Carolina debate was fiery as well. The CBS debate was hosted by Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell. Bloomberg was booed right off the bat about Russia helping Bernie but he late had many cheers. He and Biden and Steyer had some real support there. Tom Steyer was actually quite impressive and seemed well spoken.  He was the only one who brought up the impeachment. He had a great point that we all know that republicans who did not convict Trump are complicit in the Russian meddling. Then he ruined it all by being alarmist with his fear. He warned us off the former republican and the socialists. I loved Bernie’s ideas about small business’s getting in on the marijuana business and not letting big corporations taking it over. He is also the only one in debates that I have seen consistently bring up Native Americans.  Biden again kept jumping in to tell us that he did this or that. Amy disagreed about a bill he claimed to have written. Warren said “dig in” numerous times. She went for the jugular with Bloomberg when she said a former female employee of his said to “kill it” in response to her pregnancy. He denied it but it sure is memorable. She did make great points that he has given much money to Linsey Graham’s campaign as well as other republican runs including against her. BTW he also gave 2.3 mil to Rick Snyder, the Gov of Michigan after the water crisis was well known.  I love that Amy is always saying that we shouldn’t fight amongst ourselves but she just does not have the votes so she needs to go. Bernie got some boos about guns for he seems the softest in that area.
*****
Joe Biden won the South Carolina primary in a big way.
*****
Dick Van Dyke, Sarah Silverman and Public Enemy among others will be at the Bernie Sanders rally in L.A. on March 1.
*****
Just think what the 400 million that Bloomberg spent on his campaign could have done for the debt of the average American.  Instead of a campaign for a presidency that he can’t win, he could have helped so many get a leg up.
*****
I don’t understand why “respected” journalists like Chuck Todd don’t throw W H reps off the set when they disrespect him or his colleagues with fake news jabs.
*****
Bob Moore of Bob’s Red Mill is giving his company away to his employees. Now, that’s a boss!!
*****
Bone, Thugs and Harmony have made a deal with Buffalo Wild Wings to rename themselves Boneless thugs and Harmony. The publicity stunt is to promote boneless wings.
*****
NASA is hiring.
*****
Scotland has made feminine sanitary products free!!
*****
Is this true? There were pigeons in Nevada with MAGA hats glued to their heads??
*****
The final Criminal Minds has aired. CBS often aired double episodes which made it seem like they really wanted to get rid of it. Kirsten Vangsness and Erica Messer wrote the final episode which seemed to give special attention to Penelope and Reid as they were the originals. The other characters seemed a little overlooked but they all had happy endings. Where was Reid’s new girlfriend?  I was hoping to see Shemar Moore but it was great to see Reisgraf and Howell which are old favorites.
*****
Animal Kingdom returns to TNT on May 28.
*****
So there is a bit of a mess with the Roger Stone sentencing. Trump is hopping mad about the long sentence recommendation, Barr is said to be pretending to spar with the Prez, the DOJ is backing down and people are resigning.
*****
R.I.P. Shirley Jean Cade, Robert Conrad,  Katherine Johnson, Lyle Mays, B. Smith, A.E. Hotchner, Bashir Jackson, Ja’net Dubois, Pat Agee, victims of the Molson Coors shooting and Orson Bean.

Excited to present this new body of work in the group exhibition opening January 30, 2020. “Migrations and Meaning(s) in Art,” is curated by scholar and artist Deborah Willis, PhD at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) on view through March 15th.
“This exhibition foregrounds varied experiences on migration from concepts of dislocation, border crossings and storytelling," Willis said. "The artwork embraces and challenges various narratives on identity through migration practices and looks at the impact and reception both empowering and subjective often explored through gentrification, longing, and trauma — as well as drawing attention to race, class, gender and religion.”

Nine Alleged Members Of The Jenifer Drug Trafficking Organization Charged By Indictment And Implicated In A 2012 Murder
82 Kilograms of Cocaine Having a Street Value of $8.2 Million Seized During the Investigation
Baltimore, Maryland - A federal grand jury has indicted nine defendants – seven men and two women – who are alleged to be members of the Jenifer drug trafficking organization (Jenifer DTO) for conspiring to distribute kilograms of cocaine in the Baltimore metropolitan and Woodbridge, Virginia areas. The indictment seeks the forfeiture of $15 million. The indictment was returned on September 3, 2014 and unsealed on October 9, 2014 upon the arrests of defendants.
The search warrant affidavit was unsealed today after the execution of 25 search warrants. During the searches, law enforcement recovered 27 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $3 million; several hundred thousand dollars in cash recovered from the residences of some of the defendants; over $2 million in jewelry, including a 16 carat diamond ring; and luxury vehicles.
“The indictment and affidavit describe how drug organizations transport cocaine to Baltimore and move cash out of the city by relying on a network of suppliers, couriers, distributors, dealers and money launderers, and by using vehicles with hidden compartments,” said U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. “The affidavit also explains how law enforcement agents catch drug dealers by using physical and electronic surveillance, wiretaps and cell phone data.” The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Assistant Special Agent in Charge Gary Tuggle of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Baltimore District Office; Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Kelly of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation, Washington, D.C. Field Office; Commissioner Anthony W. Batts of the Baltimore Police Department; and Chief James W. Johnson of the Baltimore County Police Department.
The arrests and searches were the result of coordinated operations by the DEA, IRS – Criminal Investigation, Baltimore City Police Department and Baltimore County Police Department, with the assistance of agents from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
The indictment charges the following defendants, all of whom are presently in federal custody:
Kedrick Arnold Jenifer, a/k/a “Ricky Jenifer,” “James Howard Collier, Jr.” and “Rick,” age 43, of Bowie, Maryland; Tyrone Allen, age 42, of Bel Air, Maryland; Brooke Renee Lunn, a/k/a “Brooke Thomas,” and “Brooke Renee,” age 48, of Baltimore; Tracy Muse, a/k/a “Kimberly Scott,” age 41, of Pearland, Texas; Thomas Simmons, age 37, of Hampton, Virginia; Andre Brewer, age 35, of Elkridge, Maryland; Michael Williams, age 40, of Baltimore; Kermit Clark, age 44, of Baltimore; and William Hegie, age 54, of Baltimore.
All of the defendants were arrested last week Thursday, October 9, 2014, except for Michael Williams who turned himself in on Friday, October 10th.
According to an affidavit in support of search warrants, law enforcement started investigating the Jenifer DTO in March 2013. The Jenifer DTO is a Baltimore-based drug trafficking and money-laundering organization with ties to Houston, Texas; Staten Island, New York; and Woodbridge, Virginia.
From September 2012 to September 2014, the Jenifer DTO allegedly obtained kilogram-quantities of cocaine from Houston and distributed the cocaine throughout the Baltimore area and in Woodbridge, Virginia.
"The arrest of these alleged Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO) members emphasizes the proactive work that the Drug Enforcement Administration and our law enforcement partners undertake every day to stop the flow of drugs from entering the Baltimore metropolitan area,” stated Gary Tuggle, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Baltimore District Office. “DEA’s investigation of this DTO was a long-term, highly complex effort which used a myriad of investigative techniques to expose this DTO. Additionally, by hitting drug trafficking organizations where it hurts them most and seizing drug proceeds, in this case cash, vehicles and properties, we are crippling their ability to ever return.”
Kedrick Jenifer is the alleged leader of the drug organization. He directed the collection and transportation of money from Baltimore to Houston, and the transportation of cocaine from Houston to Baltimore.
The affidavit alleges that the drug organization concealed money and cocaine in hidden compartments in vehicles that were driven between Baltimore and Houston. The vehicles were sometimes transported on car carriers. Cocaine and cash were stored at the homes of the defendants, their family members, and at a business complex called RCH Plaza on West Franklin Street in Baltimore. Vehicles with hidden compartments were brought to the business complex, where DTO members concealed large amounts of cash or cocaine.
The affidavit alleges that in October of 2009, while traveling from Baltimore to California, Jenifer and Tyrone Allen stopped in Phoenix, Arizona. At the Phoenix airport, police seized $97,020 and three cell phones from Jenifer, and $70,680 and eight cell phones from Allen.
On September 27, 2012, the affidavit alleges, Brooke Lunn and a man named John Moore were arrested near Houston with approximately 30 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a vehicle. Tracy Muse, believed to be a girlfriend of Jenifer, posted bond for the release of Lunn and Moore. Lunn and Moore returned to Maryland.
On October 20, 2012, Moore was fatally shot in the back of the head in Baltimore. According to the affidavit, his murder is believed to be related to the cocaine seizure.
On July 2, 2013, Arkansas Highway Patrol searched a vehicle transported by the Jenifer DTO from Baltimore to Houston by car carrier, while it was being driven back to Baltimore. From a hidden compartment in the rear of the vehicle, 23.8 kilograms of cocaine were seized. Following the seizure, Jenifer allegedly returned to using Lunn to transport cash and cocaine between Baltimore and Houston. Since August 2013, Lunn is believed to have made 30 trips between the cities, transporting cash and cocaine.
In June 2014, agents saw Simmons give Jenifer a black bag in a parking lot in Woodbridge, Virginia. Virginia State Police pulled Simmons over 60 miles away and seized two kilograms of cocaine from a black bag concealed in a hidden compartment in Simmons’ vehicle.
Jenifer owns World Fed Apparel, Inc., a clothing store in Baltimore. Jenifer is also a co-owner of Flavor Factory, LLC, which is believed to own an ice cream franchise in Baltimore.
Jenifer and his companies currently own the following vehicles:
2013 Rolls Royce Ghost valued at $296,000, 2014 Ferrari 458 Italia valued at $271,000, 2014 BMW M6 valued at $113,925, 2015 Ford F-250 truck valued at $56,000,
and a 2012 Acura ZDX, a 2010 Honda Crosstour, a 2006 Acura and a 2009 GMC Denali truck. Jenifer kept some high end vehicles at a storage unit in Laurel, Maryland. Brewer allegedly bought a 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG, worth approximately $156,900.
The defendants face a maximum sentence of life in prison for conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine.
The defendants had their initial appearances in U.S. District Court in Baltimore, Virginia and Texas last week. Hegie and Clark consented to detention. A detention hearing was held on October 14, 2014, in federal court in Baltimore for Lunn and she is detained. A detention hearing in federal court in Baltimore is scheduled for Jenifer, Allen and Brewer on October 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively, and for Muse on October 17 at 10:00 a.m. Williams is detained until arrangements are completed for his release on home detention with electronic monitoring. Simmons is in custody in the Eastern District of Virginia. No date has been set for a hearing for him in Maryland.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the DEA, IRS Criminal Investigation and Baltimore City and County Police Departments for their work in the investigation. Mr. Rosenstein commended the U.S. Marshal Service and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for their assistance in the execution of the search and arrest warrants, and the Virginia State Police who assisted with the June 2014 seizure of cocaine.
Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant United States Attorneys John W. Sippel, Jr. and Scott A. Lemmon, who are prosecuting the case, and expressed his appreciation to the United States Attorney’s Offices for the Southern District of Texas and the Southern District of New York for their assistance in the prosecution of this Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Case.

A Star Is Born-Again
As I predicted, A STAR IS BORN is a blockbuster hit, never mind the fact that it sends a terrible message to all the potential love addicts out there. (See my previous blog post on the subject here.) But I can’t be too hard on Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. After all, my whole life I’ve been given horrible messages from star-crossed onscreen romances – messages that might not damage a reasonable person, but can send an unreasonable obsessive like myself pursuing a bad idea straight to the gates of insanity or death.
I’m not blaming the movies; much of this is in the eye of the beholder. One person can watch LEAVING LAS VEGAS and swear off drinking; another sits through the same screening and decides to grow up to be Nicolas Cage’s suicidal alcoholic or Elizabeth Shue’s self-destructive prostitute. Because they’re so, you know, tragic and misunderstood. And sexy; don’t forget sexy.
Tumblr media
Here, then, is a litany of cinematic woe for those unable to control and enjoy their love lives. The list is weighted for blockbusters and recent releases, because I only had so much space and it was too depressing to consider watching every Doris Day-Rock Hudson movie ever made. Feel free to chime in with your particular favorite.
Caution: Some spoilers ahead, but my guess is you’ve probably seen these movies already, maybe more than once. (Also note, a version of this column was previously printed in Substance Magazine.)
1. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) A rebellious heiress and an out-of-work newspaperman fall for each other while she’s running away to elope with another man. “I don’t know very much about him, except that I love him,” says rich girl Claudette Colbert about penniless reporter Clark Gable. I still adore this movie classic, but I did finally figure out that relationships work better when you’re actually acquainted with the person.
2. LOVE STORY (1970) A rich boy and a poor girl fall in love as Harvard undergrads; he defies his family to marry her. Their perfect life is cut short by her fatal illness. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” young Ali McGraw tells young Ryan O’Neal, because if you truly love someone you will never hurt or disappoint them in the first place. This is a terrible lesson to teach a love addict; we already expect you to read our minds and then resent you when you can’t.
3. PRETTY WOMAN (1990) A wealthy businessman hires a prostitute to pose as his girlfriend at a social event, then falls in love with her. In the original script, the tart-with-a-heart (Julia Roberts) was tossed back onto the street when her hooker duties were over, and Richard Gere’s part was going to be played by Danny DeVito. But no, you want the fairy tale….
4. REALITY BITES (1994) A recent college grad has to decide between her erratic, creative housemate and an ardent, stable television executive. When someone tells you, “I may do mean things, and I may hurt you, and I may run away without your permission, and you may hate me forever…” believe them. They know themselves better than you do. Run. Even if he looks like Ethan Hawke, or she looks like Winona Ryder.
5. JERRY MAGUIRE (1996) A single mom and a volatile football player are the only ones who stand by a once-successful sports agent. “You complete me,” Tom Cruise tells Renee Zellweger. Oh, please. We are not half-people, flopping around the planet waiting for some perfect puzzle piece to make us whole. That way lies madness.
6. SIX DAYS SEVEN NIGHTS (1998) A Manhattan fashion journalist is stranded on a South Pacific island with a crusty bush pilot; danger and romance ensue. The Harrison Ford part in this opposites-attract romantic adventure has been played by everyone from Humphrey Bogart to Keanu Reeves. They all represent the fantasy fixer-upper. But how will Anne Heche’s thirtysomething magazine editor really feel in 10 years, stuck with a 66-year-old boyfriend and no running water?
7. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004) Joel and Clementine try to heal their broken hearts by literally forgetting about one another. There’s a phenomenon in recovery known as “euphoric recall.” The idea is that we only remember the good things about drinking and using, never the bad. Substitute “failed relationship” for “drinking and using,” and you’ve got yourself a Jim Carrey/Kate Winslet movie.
8. THE NOTEBOOK (2004) An elderly man reads to an Alzheimer’s patient out of a notebook. It’s the love story of a rich girl and a poor boy in 1940’s South Carolina. We all desire the devotion Gena Rowlands enjoys after 60 years of marriage. Sadly, your deliciously dramatic, obsessive, rebellious adolescent-type relationship generally burns out long before that. Ryan Gosling is no more likely to grow up to be James Garner than a red Ferrari is going to grow up into a reliable pick-up truck.
9. CRAZY STUPID LOVE (2011) A jilted husband asks a notorious womanizer to teach him how to pick up chicks, not realizing the guy has picked up his own daughter. This time, Ryan Gosling is a player. Always has been a player. Gives player lessons to other men. But one deep-and-meaningful night with Emma Stone and he instantly turns into the loyal lover you long for. In AA terms, that’s called denial: “Yes, but… this time, it will be different!”
10. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (2012) An ex-mental patient, hoping to reunite with his estranged wife, falls for a beautiful but disturbed young widow. No, pairing a depressive sex addict (Jennifer Lawrence) with a bipolar love addict (Bradley Cooper) does not make them both all better. Trust me; I’ve been there.
