I had a fun conversation with some other cartoonists in a National Cartoonists Society open house Zoom a couple of months ago about the difference between traditional inking and "digital" inking. I mentioned always feeling a little weird calling it "inking" as, obviously, no "INK" is required in any way. The idea sat in the back of my head until I also realized how often I draw myself at a drawing board I RARELY use anymore, and I figured I could combine the concepts and make Dandy the voice prodding the questions. He's FAR less antagonistic than Skeezicks, who I used to use as the Anxiety Demon in the strip, but still able to get under my skin for the sake of comedy. Plus... I never get tired of drawing him. What can I say, it's my comic strip. I'm self-indulgent. lol

I FOUND ITTTT!!!! i KNEW i had an old sketchpage with sisko on it. this is also from 2018 so it's five years old. please forgive the glaring mistakes in it with that in mind.

Learning pen & ink

I have recently ordered paper copy of the classic book (it was published in 1930s!) "Rendering in Pen and Ink" The examples in the book are amazing, and there a lot of exercises. So, I am eager to work throught them! I hope it will help to improve my art. Because now I am in a stage where I can't draw fast with pen and ink, and it bothers me a lot. I want to be able to draw from nature with ink and pen, LOL

For now I am doing basic strokes (also impoving control over fountain pen) with two of my pens. I have Duke 209 (it has Fude Nib!) and Lamy Safari F (also EF, but that one is too thin for my liking). I will get a photo my progress when I fill the current page of my sketchbook with strokes!

hi there! this is actually the first illustration i finished out of the three but i decided to post the falin one first because it seemed fitting when the dragon episode came out pftt

and since a while has passed, i'm very happy to say that i got a high grade for the mock covers i did! which i'm really happy for since ngl, the venn diagram of "drawings for school that i got a high grade for" and "drawings for school that i'm actually proud of" is very, very small lmao

to save time, i had to forgo coloring in the lines for this drawing which gives it a fair amount of contrast, while i still enjoy looking at it, i wonder what it would look like if i softened it with colored lineart.

i used a different pen for inking this and i was actually surprised at how quick i was! if you don't know, i love doing lineart but i usually am terribly slow at it, inking this one was a pretty fast ordeal!

i streamed this over on the klapollomb server as i was drawing it and i just distinctly remember that after the flats stage and onto shading it: i paused, pen in my hand, looking at the screen with a blank look before i typed into voice chat in all caps, "I FORGOT HOW I RENDER" ASKSKSK

it's been a while since i've actually drawn anything digital that's like, a fullass piece, so yeah 😭 i can forget sometimes. i've been doing trad art for school for like 2 years straight now so the moment i got the opportunity to do digital art i went all out lol

i have not spoken to ppl who r not judgemental abt things i like for a HOT minute so i am very enthusiastic abt it like dude i know being critical about work sometimes is important and leads us to understand more abt the things we ourselves create but i also want to ENJOY THINGS and RECOMMEND THEM TO PEOPLE without having to explain that yes i know x is problematic and yeah there's a lot of internal bias (though not in this show???? surprisingly??????) and ok sure THIS happens and nooo we don't stand for this thing irl but- like does no one ever get sick of this sometimes i would like to shut my brain off and then have fun engaging in a thing without having to talk about it with people like i'm giving a report in english class

WE NEED LESS JUDGEMENTAL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD GOD. like. for fuck's sake let me enjoy my silly little games and shows and music. this is why i am so excited for college. i can!! just always be surrounded by people who dont rlly judge me. obviously that's not guaranteed but wow are families judgemental. like not even in a totally horrible horrible way? they just automatically have so many opinions and expectations and adult knowledge or whatever?? but when im w my friends i just laugh and fuck around and no one cares?? I was talking w a friend. well we were kinda just talking at each other about shows we rlly like at the moment and it was so??? nice??? to just??? absolutely explode with excitement over a thing???

ALSO. if things are problematic avoiding them won't even actually fix anything??? if you consume it and enjoy it you can still understand where it could have done better and actually that's so important?? if there is collective understanding then things change?? it's not "this is bad, so we can't watch it" it's "hey this is good, watch it!" and THEN you have the discussion (if necessary). i am actually so talking about the new avatar movie rn but it applies outside too, i think. BUT the point is like YEAH. you can still totally recommend shit to people without explaining yourself bc also?? if you're recommending things they probably know you well enough to understand your stances on things?? and (hopefully) be informed enough to also see the things??

A Canary’s Final Flight

Process notes under the cut! (I struggled a lot so it's a bit of a novel)

So the entire process was a Ride. I knew when I picked this prompt that I was going to have a hard time, because Jimmy’s final death had been illustrated a billion times over by extremely talented artists. But I had a Vision of the snapshot of the second before the impact, when everything is still but you know what’s about happen. It was very much inspired by the clip of Fog by Jabberwocky, bu the thing is, they have the advantage of all the build up of the fall, and that’s when the trouble started.

This was my first version, and obviously it wasn't working. And I was trying so hard, with so many iterations! Small wings, big wings, no wings, different poses, less backgrounds elements. I'd done compositions were everything seemed peaceful but something is Wrong, but it wasn't working this time.

So instead I focused on what rendering I'd like to do - I tried a painterly approach, for that visceral feeling, but it wasn't working either (but hey, I did keep the red sky, so, progress)

At this point I'd been doing back and forths for weeks and I was just as lost as at the start. Now that's my tip for people who make art of any kind, in situations like that, stop thinking about how you can make the best piece possible, and think about you can have fun with it (because when you aren't it's visible). And for that was, 1 - going back to using ink and pen nibs and doing way too detailed inking, and 2- looking at Dave McKean's covers for Sandman (which, funnily enough, was also a reference for my previous trafficzine piece)

And from there I was actually going somewhere! Between the jagged rocks, the red sky, and the increased verticality with the borders, I had hit the vibes I wanted.

I did some experimentation with the border, and even though I really liked the bad boys I drew they were taking too much away from the lonely desolation, so I actually used Red (Unecessary Redstone)'s idea of all of Jimmy's worldy's possessions scattered on the ground post impact, with the idea to make it looks like the central image is his grave being dug.

(and yes for a short amount of time the were supposed to be clock markings on the sun, but there was already enough going with the wings so I scrapped that) (also fun fact the reason why the wings aren't fully material but more ghostly is because my toddler cousin was watching me draw the very first draft and asked why he didn't just use his wings and i went :( so the wings are a metaphor now)

So from there I found a bunch of picture and took some myself, cut and assembled everything together, added shadows in all the appropriate places, and repainted some elements so that everything would look better intergrated (some of the wheats are basically 100% handpainted, the cardboard as well). This took a suprisingly long amount of time, but I was done!

Well I wasn't expecting to have that much to say, but I hope if you're still reading, it was at least interesting!
