Penal substitution is entirely at home with the resurrection of Jesus
The resurrection is seen by proponents of penal substitution as ‘Christ’s justification’; 'the culminating proof that Christ was a teacher sent from God (the sign of Jonah)’, and 'that he was the Son of God (Romans 1:4)’; 'the supreme attestation of the fact of immortality’; an 'open demonstration’ of his victory over death, the pledge of our new birth in him; the promise of the perfection of our resurrection bodies; the beginning of the end for the old created order and the first fruits of the new creation; and a motivation and empowerment to godliness in the light of Christ’s impending return. These theological themes are integrated into a coherent theological framework in which penal substitution plays an indispensable part. In summary, the claim that penal substitution diminishes the significance of Jesus’ life and resurrection is simply not true.

I really don't like how we're just glossing over the fact that Gwen cheated on Peter let alone MJ hiding this from him.
who's glossing? i'm writing a whole fic about it.
2. they were on a BREAK
Tumblr media
3. you're forgetting that peter and gwen are dramatic irony the couple™ and at exactly the precise same time gwen had her tongue down mary jane's throat peter had his tongue down harry's. the exact same night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the joke is that peter has been burying all this guilt for years thinking that he'd failed gwen and was terrible and dishonest and she was an angel who was too good for him until he finds out. gwen was always just as much of a messy bitch as he was. but he was too busy spiralling in his own messes to realise that gwen was just as messy as he was.
Tumblr media
4. mj didn't tell him, sure. but that's because she assumed gwen told him. i don't think mj's the sort of girl to say "hey by the way i fucked your girlfriend shitlips" even if that would be hilarious. she didn't think it was a secret though and definitely thought gwen told peter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yeah. i'd hesitate to call it cheating - they were definitely on a break. they might not have laid down a law, and definitely both feel ridiculously guilty about it, but they. were. on a break.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think it was just a necessary thing, for both of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think for me, i'm not about the moral black-and-white of relationships - it always got me down when people point at the piña colada song saying it's terrible. it's about cheating. that's objectively bad and evil so says it in the bible thou shall not commit adultery yadda yadda yadda. no, no, shut up. that's not what the song is about. the song is about rediscovering there's stuff you've overlooked about your partner. that you can think you love someone, but not actually know them. and you can learn more about them, and realise they're not what you thought, and you can fall in love with them all over again. for me, that's like, the most romantic thing ever, actually. and those who look at it through the "this song is about cheating" lens completely sleep on how genuinely, sincerely cute and romantic it is. that it's a song not about cheating, but discovering stuff you didn't know about your partner, and falling in love with them all over again. finding out that actually, you're both the kind of person who's crazy and lustful for life enough to run away with a romantic stranger on a wild escape, but you were both too afraid to admit that to each other. i love that song. it's so much more sincere and human than any stupid love song. nay sayers get away from me.
i think peter and gwen are a lot like that piña colada song. neither of them are a villain. both of them make mistakes and both of them were messy and both of them had stuff to figure out before they could make it work together.
i... sighs... i'd like people to kind of stop expecting these guys to be right all the time. they're disasters. i wouldn't be interested to write them in any other way. and i promise you wouldn't be interested to read it, either. i'm here for the messy bitches who have stuff to figure out. shout out to the messy bitches who have stuff to figure out.

Reverse 1999: Vertin Character Analysis and Theory
Vertin and the “Hidden Desire”
I'll be exploring the Gluttony Amplification Material and how it potentially relates to Vertin. Unlike the Psychubes, Gluttony is not a conclusion built upon Vertin’s thoughts and reflection. Instead, Gluttony is “a desire hidden in the depths”. I examined this under a mostly biblical lens because Reverse1999 loves to use Biblical references. Word Count 1600+
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Relevant Background Information
Psychubes are an element of an arcanist's thoughts. They show greater ability and will provide more help. The more you ponder, the more you gain (in game description). Vertin can reflect and meditate in a process called pneuma analysis (resource stage) twice a day, where she acquires lesser Psychubes, Thought Elements, and Thoughts in Entirety.
Thought Elements: an element of an arcanist’s thoughts. There are so many ways to organize the mess: the furnace that burns and the blade that cuts…but I wish to keep it the way it is.
Thoughts in Entirety: an arcanist’s complete thoughts. As the disorganized has been organized, the darkened vision lightens, ideas are finally taking shape in my mind.
These are the building blocks for greater ideas, which would be higher level Psychubes. On the Psychube page in the Atlas, you will also see the phrase word anamnesis.
In Platonic philosophy, anamnesis is a process of rediscovering knowledge that the soul already possesses but has forgotten. Plato stated the soul has pre-existing knowledge that is brought back to consciousness through the process of questioning and recollection. However, in Christian and Catholic contexts, anamnesis is recollecting the “Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus”. In other words, remembering Jesus’s sacrifice and honoring his memory (this is an oversimplification for the sake of brevity). In general, we can think of anamnesis as a profound reflection or recalling of events.
To summarize, the Psychubes interlap with Vertin's emotional state and have been cultivated by her experiences. She reflects, recollects, and creates stronger “impressions” (from the Psychubes). The definition for impression: an idea, feeling, or opinion about something or someone, especially one formed without conscious thought or on the basis of little evidence. These are all emotion/intuition based. Very fitting for an arcanist.
From a lore perspective, the Psychube Shop is a representation of Vertin’s mind as she turns her thoughts into Psychubes. The different prices represent the time and introspection needed to gather Vertin’s thoughts. She needs more complete thoughts (Thoughts in Entirety) in order to afford the stronger Psychubes, which means spending more time doing pneuma analysis (farming the stage). The lesser ideas are also the foundation of strong ones. In the game this is represented by engraving a Psychube to make it stronger. (Note: This is how I connected the game mechanics to the lore, but I'm open to other interpretations!)
Gluttony is not a Psychube and isn't listed in the Atlas. However, it consumes the most Thoughts in Entirety. The strongest Psychubes are worth 210, but Gluttony is a whopping 300. The Snake symbolizes “desire hidden in the depths.” It gorges on Vertin’s thoughts if she indulges it instead of a Psychube. However, if she allows Gluttony to devour her thoughts, she can amplify an existing Psychube. This could be interpreted as gaining a deeper understanding, but to get there she needs to get obsessed/fixated/focused. This is reflected in the large amount of thoughts she needs to invest in Gluttony before she can amplify her chosen Psychube.
But what exactly is Gluttony and why is it slithering around in Vertin’s soul?
The Serpent and the Sin
Gluttony is represented by a snake, which we can also refer to as a serpent.
In the Bible, snakes are often associated with deception and temptation. The serpent in the Garden of Eden is commonly interpreted as a symbol of Satan tempting Eve to disobey God. Snakes also represent danger and evil.
In the biblical story of the Garden of Eden, the serpent tempts Eve to eat the forbidden fruit (Apple) from the Tree of Knowledge. The serpent challenges God's command, suggesting that eating the fruit will not lead to death but rather make Eve and Adam godlike, “knowing good and evil”. The serpent manipulates Eve, creating doubt about God's intentions and enticing her with the idea of gaining knowledge and wisdom. Eve eventually succumbs to the temptation, eats the forbidden fruit, and shares it with Adam. Their disobedience led to their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The story is a lesson on disobedience and its consequences. The snake was also cursed by God to crawl on its belly and eat dust.
While snakes aren't evil in every context, keep this story in mind.
With the Snake symbolism established, we can look at the Sin.
The Seven Deadly Sins are Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride.
Going a step further, Lust, Gluttony, and Greed share a theme: excessive desire. People carrying these sins are deemed insatiable.
Gluttony refers to excessive indulgence in food or drink. It involves overconsumption beyond what is necessary, often driven by an unrestrained appetite or desire for pleasure. It’s a sinful behavior due to its focus on self-indulgence and lack of moderation.
However, we haven’t seen any behavior to connect Vertin with Gluttony. In fact, she displays the exact opposite and reflects Gluttony’s counterpart: Temperance. Temperance is one of the Seven Virtues (opposite of Seven Sins). According to Wikipedia Temperance is the practice of moderation and voluntary self-restraint. It involves refraining from vengeful actions through mercy and forgiveness, avoiding arrogance through humility, and curbing excesses like luxury, overindulgence in food and drink, as well as managing rage through calmness. This is Vertin’s whole persona as the stoic Timekeeper. She asks for nothing, but is always ready to give. During Green Lake, we see her explicitly say things like she doesn’t have wishes because she already has everything she needs but she goes out of her way to fulfill other people’s desires.
So Why a Snake? Why use the term Gluttony?
In Vertin’s case, I’d say a “hunger for knowledge” suits her. She wanted to know the outside world to the extent of letting herself get hurt in (electric fence and punishments from teachers) in the process. She craved more while everyone else obeyed the Foundation and stayed in their lane. Smoltin could never be satisfied within the Foundation’s walls.
While it’s true she had an insatiable curiosity, she is not Eve in this story.
She was the Serpent.
During the break away event, Vertin enticed the other children to disobey. She tempted them, just like the snake who tempted Eve. She challenged everything they knew the way the Snake planted doubts about God. The other children were swayed by her which ended up getting them Reversed. Now she is the Timekeeper, doomed to helplessly watch history repeat as she loses friends and allies. The snake was cursed to crawl on its belly, and she was cursed to brave the Storm as Eras end.
Maturity and trauma go hand in hand since children who experience trauma are forced to grow up faster than others. Vertin wanted “too much”, and look at where it got her. She has her own goals and desires of course, but Vertin doesn’t ask for much compared to her crew. Vertin is also a victim of other people’s greed like Constantine, and as of recently, Arcana. What if she’s afraid she’ll become like the people who hurt her and her friends? Who continue to hurt her physically and emotionally?
Gluttony could be what Vertin perceives as her sin. She could have a skewed perception of herself. She wants things like everyone else, but wanting things is “wrong.”  Wanting too much will make her hurt people. This is why Gluttony is part of her psyche along with the psychubes she manifests. It’s not a conclusion or idea she needs to come to because it's already coiled up in her mind. It lives there. To clarify Vertin has desires but chooses not to act on them. Its similar to not being able to control your emotions, but you can manage how they manifest to some degree.
The repression is intense.
“The snake is hissing to find its way. It is now clear where to go and what to bite. It opens its mouth, it protrudes its fangs, it sinks them into the prey.”
Fun fact, snakes are predators that can unhinge their jaws to eat their prey whole after they subdued them. It fits right into the concept of Gluttony. Idk how you want to interpret this but to me it shows someone who knows what they want, knows how to get what they want, and has the means to claim it without hesitance. Yet, Vertin doesn't indulge this part of her (Unlike Constantine and Arcana). What do you think? There are so many ways to interpret this!
TL;DR: Psychubes are linked to Vertin's emotions and experiences, cultivated through reflection and meditation in a process called pneuma analysis. Anamnesis, mentioned in the game's Atlas, connects to Platonic philosophy and Christian contexts, representing a profound recollection of events. Gluttony, symbolized by a snake, consumes Thoughts in Entirety, reflecting excessive desire and temptation akin to the biblical story of the serpent in the Garden of Eden. Despite Vertin's displayed Temperance, Gluttony resides in her heart. Her trauma represses many of her “hidden desires”.  The symbolism of Gluttony, both in the lore and game mechanics, adds depth to Vertin's character.
Disclaimer: there is also a serpent on the Insight Material “Fruit of Good and Evil” but that will be a discussion for another time because we’re focusing on Gluttony.

"Holiness Hoodoo: Rediscovering Ancestral Roots Without Jesus"
The term "Holiness Hoodoo" may leave some people puzzled, so allow me to clarify its meaning. In my view, Holiness Hoodoo represents a return to the traditional practices of my ancestral lineage, a way to decipher who I am and what my purpose entails. Many of our forebears were devout Christians, and this undeniable fact forms the backdrop of my spiritual journey. Despite the complex relationship that many Black Americans have with the Bible due to the scars of slavery, it's essential to remember that it wasn't the Bible itself that caused harm, but the people wielding it as a tool of oppression.
As I delved deeper into the realms of ancestral magic, I began to notice striking parallels with church practices. To some, I seemed too "churchy" for hoodoo, and to others, too "hoodoo" for the church—there appeared to be no middle ground. However, I've come to understand that my connection to my ancestors is the cornerstone of my spiritual practice. I've realized that perhaps the reason some individuals struggle to communicate with their spirits is that they try to venerate them through African traditions, tarot, or other methods their ancestors might not recognize.
Tumblr media
The Bible, as a potent tool in hoodoo, is not revered because we live by its teachings but because it contains powerful scriptures. My mother, for instance, believed in Jesus, yet she was a practitioner of hoodoo—a tongue-speaking, spirit-conjuring woman. Her approach, which I now embrace, is what I refer to as "Holiness Hoodoo."
Tumblr media
So, what does Holiness Hoodoo look like for me?
1. Setting the Atmosphere:
I play inspirational or gospel music that resonates with my specific needs, allowing it to fill my home as I clean, pray, or perform spiritual work. Gospel music serves as a direct conduit to my ancestral spirits, and sometimes, when I hear a song I haven't listened to in a while, an ancestor's presence is assured.
2. Keeping a Bible on the Altar:
While I don't read the Bible frequently, I keep it open to the Psalms as an offering to my spirits. The Bible also serves as a powerful tool of protection, and specific verses and pages can function as talismans and petitions.
3. Baptisms:
Baptism, in my lineage, is a ritual practice to wash ourselves of sins and start anew. It's not just for babies; it can also cleanse generational curses and traumas passed down from parents.
4. Shouting:
Listening to gospel music, I engage in the practice of shouting, a form of ecstatic dance that connects me with my spirits. This practice fills me with light and often results in downloads of ancestral wisdom.
5. Laying of Hands:
I perform the laying of hands, a practice I'll discuss in more detail in the future. It's distinct from Reiki and is a significant part of my spiritual tradition.
6. Fasting:
Fasting is a part of my spiritual practice, serving as a means of both elevating my spiritual consciousness and cleansing my body. I firmly believe that one's health plays a pivotal role in their spiritual journey.
Holiness Hoodoo is about preserving the traditions of our ancestors and finding connections with them. It doesn't rely on dogma or strict religious doctrine; instead, it is a pathway to tap into the wisdom and spirituality that has been passed down through generations. In this practice, there is no room for being "too churchy" or "too hoodoo"—it's about embracing the rich tapestry of our heritage and harnessing it for a profound and authentic spiritual experience.

i'm jewish and i'm not a fan of christian hegemony, but I'm also an ardent fan of messiah narratives in fiction, and i've recently rediscovered my love of the musical Godspell. if you have a moment, could you share a little about the historical context of the gospel according to matthew? i'm trying to work out my relationship to this piece of text as a historic document, even though i don't believe in it literally. what did contemporary thinkers make of it at the time? why did it have so much staying power?
though matthew is placed first among the synoptics in the second testament, it was written after mark (and after source q: a lost gospel from which both mt and luke took material). because of this late composition date (at least 30 years, but probably more, after jesus' death), matthew is concerned with an early jesus movement that has begun establishing itself. he writes to both jews and gentiles, and particularly because of this latter audience, he adds a great deal of description of hebrew bible and jewish terminology that otherwise is taken for granted in mark (and likely q, too). and yet, despite all these attempts to explain to gentiles the jewish tradition, matthew gets much wrong: he is likely new to the faith himself. what we have then is a gospel written by someone who had just entered the early jesus movement, for others in the same position. that is precisely why it has proved durative: the details, the additions, the teaching (bordering hand-holding). matthew's jesus is friendly, not-too-jewish, promising a kind of resurrection that the early jesus movement so desperately loved. his gospel, in turn, is lyrical, dripping with imagery and written in gorgeous prose. and yet, it is easy to read. didactic or, more appropriately, catechistic. jesus for dummies

Quote
Modern Christian reading of the New Testament has been properly shamed by the Holocaust into rediscovering the hugely semitic seedbed of references and allusions which undergird our texts, requiring us to recover knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures. But what we haven’t had, until now, is a dynamic reading of the Hebrew Scriptures themselves, positing a detectable learning process by which it becomes possible to imagine that Jesus was fulfilling something. That he was indeed the culmination of a millennia-long act of communication to which the texts of both Testaments are monuments.

Thoughts on “Make the Exorcist Fall In Love”
Tumblr media
Been reading this during break and it’s a hidden gem amongst manga for me, so far as I can see.
I never imagined I would see exorcism presented in each action referring to a bible verse. As someone who loves biblical references and angels and demons and whatnot, this fits comfortably in my shelf.
I’ll try my best to not spoil anything here.
Tumblr media
The manga tells us a story about a boy who is destined to be the world strongest exorcist, the only one who can defeat Satan when the time comes in his rebirth. Knowing this, the church raised the boy by teach him every single verse in the bible, and to live to it. Although the fact they call him “it” during the first chapter, they obviously look at him as a tool rather than human.
Our protagonist, the boy, or often called as Mr. Priest, practiced and use the word of god to ward off demons. As in using a literal bible verse about bringing sword to the world to summon a sword, or quoting a verse from Matthew about adultery to shook himself off from Asmodeus in his first battle. However this took a toll on him, leaving a trauma that hasn’t been healed ever since. It’s a recurring theme too in the recent arc (spoiler?)
I can see why the theme of lust and love is brought up in the first chapter, as it is about the journey of Mr. Priest to understand what is love. As it is his master’s wish for him to find love. Since due to the trauma, our protagonist hasn’t really understand the notion of love, growing up in an abusive environment and first known love the form of lust.
Tumblr media
Few years after the incident, Mr. Priest is assigned to protect Imuri Atsuki, an artist who is apparently being targeted by Satan upon his wake. This will be a journey of discovering the meaning of love between the two. There’s a catch though, Imuri is not human, but no one really knows about it.
Tumblr media
The artstyle is maybe not for everyone (as most the comments said they look like a child), but I think it’s nice since it contrasted the dark themes of the comic.
I really recommend it to anyone that is interested in biblical references, occultism, or just someone who wants to rediscover love along with them.

PENAL SUBSTITUTION IS ABSOLUTELY CENTRAL
Many biblical doctrines would be compromised if we were to remove penal substitution from the picture. We have seen that the doctrine of penal substitution is necessary to safeguard the justice and holiness of God, for to deny it is to suggest that God is content simply to overlook evil whenever he forgives someone. Discarding penal substitution would also jeopardize God’s truthfulness, for he has promised that sin will lead to death. Moreover, other aspects of the atonement cease to make sense if penal substitution is denied. We argued…..that penal substitution is essential to Christ’s victory over evil powers (something that Gustav Aulen’s Christus Victor theory fatally missed), to his restoration of the relationships between sinners and God (reconciliation), and to the liberation he brings from captivity to sin and Satan (redemption or ransom). Far from being viable alternatives to penal substitution, they are out-workings of it. As the hub from which all of these other doctrines fan out, penal substitution is surely central.
To take another example, it is impossible to understand how the atoning death of Jesus could usher in the new creation and bring new life to the corrupt and degenerating cosmos if he did not endure and exhaust the divine curse on the old creation. The renewal of the cosmos by means of Jesus’ death is explicable only by reference to penal substitution.
Of course, none of this implies that the other biblical perspectives on the atonement are either untrue or insignificant. It does establish that penal substitution is absolutely central, and much else would simply fall apart without it.

Briony Thorburn and Finley Blair might be my favourite couple in All of Us Villains. they weren't appealing at first. them in aouv was mild but in All of Our Demise truly showed their characteristics as an individual.
Previously, Briony and Finley were described as two confident, self-reliant and grounded people. although it might look like they could be the perfect match, These two were never meant for each other. They were too similar in a lot of ways. Their solid principles made it hard for them to hold together.
But along the way (in aoud), Briony and Finley get to rediscover themselves through the tournament. Their lives depended on it.
Having two competent people being challenged, their own principles were threatened and their beliefs constantly shook to the point where they started to question themselves as their own - not as a couple.
"I guess Innes was right about me. I'm still trying to play the hero." - Briony
This kiss had reminded her of the future worth fighting for. But for him, it was a cruel taste of everything they'd never been allowed to want.
"I'm so tired- of wanting impossible things." - Finley
Briony acts on emotions. Her confidence allowed her to be herself. But not for Finley. His family's code is a bible. Blair's way of life is a religion. And he came from a family that abides to these rules and keeping up with these perfection, despite wanting something for himself.
So when both of them found each other in the tournament, they were forced to face the inevitable.
Briony had to question her intention. Was it for her to become the hero or to save everyone? Did she truly stole the champion's ring for Innes or for her to be on the spotlight.
Finley had to force himself to think for himself, do things for his own survival. Even at the beginning of the tournament, he thought he had to win for his family's name. He even volunteered to be in the game. It's a code of honour. And when its up to him to survive on his own, he didn't know what to do.
Briony and Finley's journey is interesting. As much as I love Alistair and Gavin, both couples are waaaaay too different.
Briony and Finley's story arc is about character development while Alistair and Gavin story arc is about character realization.
Anyway, I have yet to finish this book. I am half-way there but I had to write this down. I honestly love their character development. It was subtle but hard to miss.

I dared to come to your inbox with a song recommendation because I know you enjoy music and appreciate different genres. may I suggest you one song which instantly started playing in my head when I read the beach sex scene in Byblos in On Guardians, Serpents And Nightingales? (although NIN's Closer is an exquisite choice!) the song is called Cantus, by Faith and the Muse. I couldn't find the complete lyrics, but what I did find was a loose partial translation from Old Latin, about "an ancient female deity/sexual monster": "she is a savage and serpiform creature, flying over the aether on her wings, exhausting one and all, let him have her, let him possess her, in her embrace of love he will stay forever". now it's my soundtrack to that scene (which is delicious by the way, thank you for that), but also kind of a theme song for fem Crowley through the ages.
First of all - what the HELL, thank you SO MUCH!? ❤️❤️❤️ My fic made you think of THIS BEAUTIFUL FUCKING MUSIC? You can’t possibly understand how flattered I am. Thank you for my Christmas present. This is so inspiring! Even if only you read my fics, I’d write them for you, friend.
I’ve recently rediscovered my love for music that didn’t inspire my 1991 fic, if you catch my drift - so this one goes in the Spotify playlist for songs that remind me of Good Omens.
Oh and yeah, the lyrics are 👩‍🍳 💋
I think trading smut for good music is a perfectly respectable way to live my life. Can’t wait for Christmas dinner tomorrow, when some relative will ask me what I do these days (they always expect me to say something they can talk about later, because I’m that bitch) - and I will say: “Well, I wrote some gender-fluid Bible porn that made a stranger on the internet send me a song about having sex with winged, female demons”. I CAN’T WAIT.
Again: THANK YOU.

Please read this 🙏🏻
God’s people are starving while seated at the Father’s table.” A. W. Tozer, 1948
LEANNESS OF SOUL
“In this world of relentless waves and streams of social media, it is easy to sit and feast upon the richness and fatness of every nuance of teacher, prophet, apostle, and seer.
Yet, instead of reorienting tired souls, it has created a flailing cacophony of discordant sounds with its mixture of messages that leave one anemic and sickly of soul.
Let me illustrate this with a personal story. Many years ago, long before social media and CDs, I would order and listen to cassette tapes from one specific teacher, even falling asleep to the messages playing through my headphones at night. He was an excellent teacher and very captivating.
Then there came a day of reckoning where God shook me (that is another story for another day) awake and showed me how I had replaced His word with this teacher and his teaching.
I had begun to make an idol out of this teacher and conviction came as time after time, I was shown how I had referred back to "what did (teacher's name) say about this" instead of going to the bible and searching answers within its precious pages.
God required me to dispose of these teachings and in the quietness after this storm, He began to speak words that were life to me.
He illuminated through His word, truths that He wanted me to learn, to experience, to eat of, and to walk in.
It wasn't about the teacher being "right or wrong", it was about my heart and not hearing those things that God wanted me to learn, from Him and the subtleness of how idols can be created.
I think my own experience has created a sensitivity in my spirit to be able to "see" this same thing happening to so many, even on a greater scale because of the ease of access to online media.
It's time to turn from the prevailing and the popular "teachers", "prophets", "apostles", and "seers" and to hold on to the One who is holy and healing and, to rediscover that sacred cadence of His language that ebbs and flows like the tide, feeding and refreshing our souls….”

“Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37-38).
Jeremiah 2:13, God said of his people: “They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”
