BOOKS WRITTEN BY BLACK AUTHORS SUGGESTIONS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When talking to my suite mate the other day, she discussed something quite disturbing: that black culture is rarely viewed as academic or literate. My friend further explained how it is often connected to sports, music, specific bodies, food, and general clout but it falls short at academia. This is because American academic institutions generally do not use African American authors in their curriculums for literature and english courses.
While our generation ushers in a satisfying obligation to “stay woke,” it feels quite shallow. How can you say black lives matter and then not be able to differentiate prejudice and racism or name a relevant black figure that’s not MLK, Obama, Nelson Mandela, or a celebrity/singer? If you want to truly understand and empathize with the black community, you must learn from them and hear their stories.
I not an avid reader, and the few works I listed below are quite mainstream, however, some have made me become increasingly cognizant of what is like to be black in the America. I encourage you to reassess your privilege and give at least the short story (Recitatif) a read. The writing below is more exceptional and critical than anything you will find on Tumblr.

Recitatif
by Toni Morrison
Just Mercy
by Bryan Stevenson
The Hate You Give
by Angie Thomas
Citizen
by Claudia Rankine
Farming of the Bones
by Edwidge Danticat
this fiction focuses on the Parsley Massacre in the Dominican Republic and does not reflect African American experiences but I am including it because it is my favorite book

I want to stress that I am very influenced by many aspects of black culture. I am sure in many ways, you are as well. Take the time to broaden your perspective, it makes you a better human.

We, the signers of this petition, declare:
Mumia Abu-Jamal’s 1982 conviction is a travesty of justice, obtained through a combination of police, prosecutorial, and judicial misconduct, as documented by Amnesty International. Abu-Jamal has suffered from extreme injustice at all levels of the criminal justice system. These numerous improprieties have tainted Abu-Jamal’s conviction beyond repair.
Mumia Abu-Jamal is currently represented by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. We the petitioners are not his lawyers and do not speak for them. Instead, we are the grassroots movement of people united by the fact that we care about the fate of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
We are outraged by the many different ways that racism and institutionalized white supremacy have irreparably harmed Mumia Abu-Jamal’s civil and human rights, and his rights to the fair adjudication of his case. The District Attorney’s continued defense of the 1982 conviction & subsequent appeals process only affirms the longstanding racial injustice that has marred this case.
Today, Mumia Abu-Jamal is in poor health, now suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, the result of a recent near-fatal bout with Hepatitis C, which went unattended until attorneys sued the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections for failure to meet his most elementary healthcare needs. Abu-Jamal’s continued imprisonment clearly endangers his health.
DA Krasner, you have the authority to secure the release of Mumia Abu-Jamal. You have secured release of over a dozen persons whose unjust convictions were based on evidence of innocence deliberately ignored through improprieties by police and prosecutors. Abu-Jamal deserves the same level of fairness. If law has plain letter meaning, then please adhere to the 1889 directive from the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania that the District Attorney’s Office “…seeks justice only…” Also remember that same Court’s 1959 reminder that regardless of a DA’s belief in guilt, all defendants are “…entitled to all safeguards of a fair trial as announced in the Constitution…”
Therefore, we respectfully urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to stop defending Mumia Abu-Jamal’s conviction. Please secure the release of Mumia Abu-Jamal as soon as you possibly can.
Why is this important?
--The Evidence of Police, Prosecutorial, and Judicial Misconduct:
The racism throughout Abu-Jamal’s case is stark and unmistakable. Please remember that Albert Sabo, the 1982 trial judge, declared his intent to help prosecutors “fry the ni**er,” according to an 2001 affidavit by a court stenographer that was rejected by the Court. This and other egregious examples of overt racism thus form a key reason why he has attracted such wide-ranging support. This support includes the most prominent Black intellectuals of our generation, including Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Angela Davis, Cornel West, Henry Louis Gates, Jr, Michael Eric Dyson, and Marc Lamont Hill. In November, the blacklisted football player and anti-racist activist Colin Kaepernick declared his support for Abu-Jamal. Outside the US, support for Mumia has come from such luminaries as Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, as well as the European Parliament, Japanese Diet and the country of France. The widely-respected human rights organization Amnesty International determined in its 2000 investigation that “numerous aspects of this case clearly failed to meet minimum international standards safeguarding the fairness of legal proceedings.”
One example of the injustice is the Batson issue regarding racial discrimination in the jury selection process. Even before your office’s discovery of the six previously undisclosed file boxes, we already knew that the trial prosecutor, Assistant DA Joseph McGill used 10-11 of his 15 peremptory challenges to strike otherwise qualified black potential jurors. In his 2008 dissenting opinion, federal Third Circuit Judge Thomas Ambro argued that this one fact alone was sufficient evidence for granting Abu-Jamal a Batson hearing. Therefore, he argued that the Third Circuit Court’s 2-1 ruling against Abu-Jamal’s Batson claim was unfair, and he wrote that the ruling went “against the grain of our prior actions…I see no reason why we should not afford Abu-Jamal the courtesy of our precedents.”
When, in 2009, the US Supreme Court then ruled against considering Mumia Abu-Jamal’s appeal of the 2008 Third Circuit Court ruling, it effectively ended Abu-Jamal’s Batson claim. However, upon inspecting the contents of the six file boxes that you thankfully handed over to the defense as the law required, Abu-Jamal’s defense team found two major pieces of evidence. The first, a handwritten letter to assistant district attorney Joe McGill penned by Robert Chobert, a key prosecution's witness. In the letter, Mr. Chobert asks for his money—which suggests Mr. Chobert's testimony against Mumia may have been bribed. The boxes also reveal other handwritten notes on original files, closely tracking the race of jurors. These notes are new evidence of racial discrimination in Joseph McGill’s selection of the 1982 trial jury. And, as a result, the Batson issue is now up for reassessment and review.
When the Third Circuit majority ruled against Mumia Abu-Jamal’s Batson claim in 2008, it ignored irrefutable evidence that Abu-Jamal’s defense had been blocked from introducing the very evidence that the Third Circuit majority faulted the defense for not introducing. During the 1995 PCRA proceedings, Judge Albert F. Sabo (the original 1982 trial judge) literally had Abu-Jamal’s lawyer arrested for trying to subpoena clerks from the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia court systems as part of the defense’s PCRA petition argument that jury pools were not drawn “from a fair cross section of the community.” Outrageously, in 2008, when the Third Circuit Court ruled against Abu-Jamal’s Batson claim, the Court actually justified the denial by citing the absence of this very data that his lawyer had been arrested in court for trying to obtain.
Entire books have meticulously detailed the injustice throughout Mumia Abu-Jamal’s case, such as those by authors Dave Lindorff (Killing Time, 2003), Michael Schiffmann (Race Against Death, 2006), and J. Patrick O’Connor (The Framing of Mumia Abu-Jamal, 2008). Veteran journalist Linn Washington, Jr. has been writing newspaper columns and articles about the Abu-Jamal case since it began on December 9, 1981 with the shooting death of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner and the near-fatal shooting of Abu-Jamal. Hence, the evidence of Abu-Jamal’s unfair trial is abundant and quite accessible to anyone who reads the work by any of these four writers.
In 2010, investigative journalists Dave Lindorff and Linn Washington performed a test to see whether bullets fired into the sidewalk at close range would leave visible markings. The test was designed to replicate the shooting scenario presented at Mumia Abu-Jamal’s 1982 trial by ADA Joseph McGill, alleging that Abu-Jamal stood directly over Officer Faulkner and fired downwards at him, execution style. According to McGill’s theory, Abu-Jamal missed several times because Faulkner actively dodged the shots by rolling side-to-side, until the final shot entered Faulkner’s forehead and killed him...

Book #11 of 2020
Born A Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
Like many, I got introduced to Trevor Noah because he took over the Daily Show a few years ago and I liked Trevor right away. His humor was on point and fresh and his political commentary was hitting, but different because of his perspective. Like John Oliver, having someone who grew up outside of your country follow it and report about the craziness, makes you take a step back and reassess how the world sees you. And also what is truly crazy and unacceptable versus what’s just annoying or purely media selling. I watched the Daily Show, daily up until 2016 when in general politics got hard and disheartening for me to constantly keep up with. I still catch clips here and there, but otherwise I only see Trevor when I watch his stand up specials, which I love. But while I knew of his South African background, I never knew the full details and this wonderful book not only provides that detail, but canvasses a story that is so far from my own world view that it is humbling to see how other people grew up and lived.
The best part of this autobiography was unlike others that go chronologically through their lives, Trevor presents chapters and stories like he is telling a set in his standup. The reason this is great is he gives glances here and there of different ways his childhood and adolescence shaped him, but also how they all tied back to how his mother raised him. Their relationship is solidified from the first chapter where he describes her throwing him off a minibus on the way home from church to avoid trouble from a gang who picked them up. The tough love of never letting him get off easy while protecting him constantly even if he doesn’t realize it, shows the love and adoration he has for her and its constant throughout the book even in the crazy circumstances he finds himself in. For instance where he describes going to jail for stealing one of his stepfather’s unlicensed cars, he thinks he is being smooth and getting himself out without his mother knowing, but then he gets home and she tells him, ‘Who do you think paid the lawyer fees? The bail?’ It shows that even when he tried not to upset her, she still was there for him, tough love and all. It’s also why the last chapter, though you knew it was coming from the first, describing how she was shot by his stepfather, was hard to read. I’m so glad she is still alive and that miraculously she survived that, but I can’t even imagine being in Trevor’s place while that was going on and the years of abuse going into it.
One of the other best parts is because Trevor is a comedian, the story is told like a set in his comedy routine, but also the humor is there during his adventures even when you wouldn’t expect it to be. It made getting through the harder stuff easier, but also enjoyable because you could read it and hear his voice throughout with the knowledge of where he is today and how far he’s come. It also helped to know his trials and tribulations from just growing up, getting into girls, fitting into the different cultures, and then trying to make it in the world shaped his humor, personality, and makes him great to watch now.
I also found that because of the way it is told, I learned a lot more of not only Trevor’s history, but also South Africa’s. He makes a comment in the book that the way we teach world history in the US is not with all the facts and I’ve learned that travelling and talking with other people from outside the US, but especially the way we glance over Apartheid and just attribute the end to Nelson Mandela, really robs us of what really went into making it in the first place and how the people of South Africa have had to deal with it ending. The sheer number of tribes, cultures, and people who now have to figure out life and how to grow from it, must be challenging and difficult. I appreciated getting a glimpse into that world and learning about these amazing people.

A Massive Scandal, the Likes of Which the Accounting Profession Had Never Seen, Got KPMG to Consider Outside Directors
In an effusive, buzzy word salad published in Accounting Today, KPMG Chairman and CEO Lynne Doughtie announced that the firm would be adding independent directors to its board. Why, might you ask? I’ll let Lynne tell you unabated:
In today’s complex and fast-moving global business environment, successful organizations regularly reassess their mission and responsibilities to the markets they serve.
They raise a mirror to themselves — closely evaluating what they believe to be their proven tools — and determine if those tools remain fit for purpose. And leaders who steer these organizations — whether publicly traded companies or private partnerships — similarly must be willing to take a fresh look at the systems and structures they have in place to ensure their organizations are best positioned to thrive.
At KPMG, we embrace that responsibility. That’s largely why we’re now embarking on the important process of adding outside directors to our board. We regularly evaluate ways to improve how we manage our business to meet the expectations of our stakeholders, including the companies we serve and their boards and investors, the capital markets, our regulators and our people. In 2017, certain events, and the actions of a few former colleagues, caused us to take a deeper dive into examining our culture and values, and to assess with fresh eyes how we could improve and best position our more than 100 year-old firm for future success. What has emerged from that ongoing exercise is not surprising. We have been reminded of the cardinal rule in our business, namely that trust is paramount and, as such, must inform all that we do.
You may have missed it, but buried in that third paragraph, Doughtie used 10 words to summarize a small matter of six KPMG employees being fired for mishandling confidential PCAOB inspection information, four of whom face a slew of criminal charges. (Sidebar: The firm is paying the legal fees for three of the people charged.)
That’s what got the firm to do some soul-searching. I suppose this is the accounting firm equivalent of an alcoholic hitting rock bottom. “KPMG, you promised to be independent, objective, and to act with integrity, but then you got hammered, soiled yourself in front of everyone at the Christmas party, and then drove off and crashed into a parked cop car.”
But the most annoying thing about this essay isn’t Doughtie barely admitting that mistakes were made, but how much time she spends saying how awesome KPMG is:
We are a vibrant private partnership, deeply committed to our clients, to the public, to our communities, and to each other — and, because of the work that we do each day for the most important organizations in the world, we know that commitment is made stronger when informed not only by deep experience, but also by diverse perspectives. We know that we are best at what we do when we push ourselves to think innovatively and act boldly. We craft the smartest ideas and deliver the most effective solutions when we step outside our comfort zone and beyond what is familiar. And we provide the most fertile ground for our people to show up each day and be stewards in the workplace when we aim to eliminate groupthink and reward individual responsibility and accountability.
And that’s just one paragraph. To read the rest of it, you’d think KPMG had planned the invasion of Normandy.
Maybe it occurred to KPMG leadership that outside directors were a good idea before its partners got in trouble up to their eyeballs, but they were probably too busy peddling golf hats. Now that the firm actually has to salvage what’s left of its reputation, no one should be impressed by directors short of Pope Francis, Malala Yousafzai, and the ghost of Nelson Mandela. Get on it, Lynne.

Winnie Mandela: Soweto send-off for anti-apartheid fighter

Media captionWinnie Madikizela-Mandela’s casket was draped in the national flag
Large crowds gathered in South Africa for the funeral of the anti-apartheid campaigner Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Thousands of mourners crowded into a stadium in Soweto, near Johannesburg, where the campaigner was given a high-level send-off before her burial in Johannesburg.
Her casket was draped in the national flag, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the eulogy.
The former wife of Nelson Mandela died earlier this month at the age of 81.
A controversial figure, Mrs Madikizela-Mandela was lauded for her role in the anti-apartheid struggle.
But she was later shunned by the political elite for endorsing punishment killings for government informers.
At the funeral, Mrs Madikizela-Mandela’s daughter Zenani Mandela-Dlamini berated the “extreme cruelty” of those she said had led smear campaigns against her mother and isolated her – only to clear her name after her death.
“It is so disappointing to see how they withheld their words during my mother’s lifetime, knowing very well what they would have meant to her. Only they know why they chose to share the truth with the world after she departed,” Mrs Mandela-Dlamini said.

Image captionMr Ramaphosa apologised for only belatedly recognising Mrs Madikizela-Mandela’s contribution
President Ramaphosa described Mrs Madikizela-Mandela as a symbol of resistance who laid bare the edifice of patriarchy. He apologised for only belatedly recognising her contribution.
“I’m sorry, Mama, that your organisation delayed in according you its honour, to this point in time and moment. As president, I will propose that we award you the highest order of our movement, you richly deserve to be awarded”, Mr Ramaphosa said.
There were loud cheers when the radical Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema paid tribute to Mrs Madikizela-Mandela.
Mrs Madikizela-Mandela was a social worker when she met her future husband, then a prominent anti-apartheid campaigner, in the 1950s.
They were married for a total of 38 years but for almost three decades of that time, they were separated by Mr Mandela’s long imprisonment. They had two daughters together.

Image captionNelson and Winnie Mandela were married for 38 years
After Mr Mandela was imprisoned by the apartheid regime, Mrs Madikizela-Mandela became an international symbol of resistance to apartheid.
She too was jailed for her role in opposing white minority rule.
To her supporters, she became known affectionately as “Mother of the Nation”.
But Mrs Madikizela-Mandela also found herself mired in scandal for decades.
She was accused of conducting a virtual reign of terror in parts of Soweto by other members of the ANC in the late 1980s, and in 2003 she was convicted of fraud.
‘Parties unite in tribute’
Orlando Stadium reverberated as thousands sang liberation songs, paying tribute to the freedom fighter known to many simply as Mama Winnie.
Supporters of various political parties who are often at odds with each put their differences aside to pay tribute to the anti-apartheid activist.
During the dark days of apartheid, Orlando Stadium in Soweto was always often associated with politicians delivering fiery speeches – and today was no different.
