those darned Kids today
Tumblr media
An anachronism even then in 1981, though to be fair that is what Archie is about to tell them. Curiously, the disco generation apparently spreads its wings past the fall of disco. You cannot say that "hip hop" was the magic word. There is a passage in Jonathan Lethem's semi-autobiography The Fortress of Solitude which rings true on how "Rapper's Delight" was met amongst his white high school peers -- basically a novelty thrown into the mix, a sliding of a goof on the other culture. In Black circles it was met as inauthentic.
Tumblr media
Scrambling to slide something new through each reprint, and getting stuck on the last revision, break dancing -- it's still the thing, even as kids move so darned fast.
Tumblr media
Careful there, Archie.
Tumblr media
One way of solving the problem, just switch over to an all encompassing "the genre". Next time up, they can go one step further and try " words and symbols".
Tumblr media
I think we are in an era of 'Urban Cowboy' pulling a couple odditie, but I am not sure. This is the quasi gag purpose of the exchange -- something currently faddish out of left field. Really at high school dances these niches tend to be good for a song or two -- again, come across as novelty.

i really tried to pick the most lol so random i could think of
i can rap all 14 minutes of rapper’s delight by the sugarhill gang, if it comes on i will have to perform it
my brother once convinced me he wrote hotel california by the eagles when i was seven, and made me sing ‘backing vocals’ on it and then just played me the track out of garage band saying he ‘remixed it’
i hate watermelon bc i gave myself a taste aversion to it after making watermelon popsicles as a kid and drinking the leftover juice
