Succulents Part 1--Pelargonium
So the thing about succulents is that they aren't only the hens and chicks and sedums you find in people's gardens that are all the rage. In fact, they are a wide variety of plants, spanning multiple orders. Some have succulent leaves while others have succulent stems. Cactuses are succulents, but not all succulents are cactuses. Defining what exactly makes a succulent is a little tricky. For example, cabbage leaves are considered by some to be succulent, but tulip and onion leaves apparently aren't.
Anyway, since succulents span so many plant groups, I'll separate these parts out that way. All photos mine. Unedited.
Pelargoniums are stem succulents. Often called "geraniums" in garden centres, but that's a misnomer. Geranium is a different genus and whereas pelargoniums tend to prefer tropical climates, true geraniums prefer temperate climates. They are both in the same family, though.
The black swallowtails, female on the magenta flowers, male on the red ones, were raised by yours truly. The katydid is simply a friend.
