Hello!
I'm looking for a section of the lunchroom tape (from the Get Back sessions) where John says something to Paul along the lines of "I mean, you've only recently realised what you were doing to me". Does that ring any bells?
You seem to know your way around amoralto's archives, and I'm not having any luck searching there :)

I think you might be referring to this section of the Lunchroom Tape:
JOHN: And it’s just that, you know. It’s only this year that you’ve suddenly realised, like who I am, or who he is, or anything like that.
I find this bit of the conversation particularly impenetrable; and all the more fascinating because of it. It's here that we have this famed exchange (whose full meaning still eludes me):
JOHN: Because you – ’cause you’ve suddenly got it all, you see. PAUL: Mm. JOHN: I know that, because of the way I am, like when we were in Mendips, like I said, “Do you like me?” or whatever it is. I’ve always – uh, played that one. PAUL: [laughs nervously] Yes. JOHN: So. PAUL: Uh, I’d been watching, I’d been watching. I’d been watching the picture. YOKO: Go back to George. What are we going to do about George?

We Have Egos
Over lunch, the remaining Beatles touch on George’s resignation from the band on the 10th, as well as a group meeting held the previous day which ended in less than desirable circumstances (with George leaving the room, frustrated by John’s persistently Yoko-filtered standard of communication). While Yoko contends that it would be easy for John (and Paul) to regain George’s favour, John points out that this is a more deeply-rooted issue than it may seem, compounded over the years by John and Paul’s treatment of George and his defaulted status within the group. Upon this problem of overriding egos, however, Paul suggests (passive-aggressively) that it isn’t just the Lennon-and-McCartney tandem that is causing George upset and consternation. 
Jealousy For You
As the problem of George’s current resignation from the band is discussed, John makes it about him and Paul wonders what it’s all worth.
The Way We All Feel Guilty About Our Relationship To Each Other
John contends with how the force of his partnership with Paul and his relationship with Yoko has negatively affected George and perhaps directly contributed to George’s walkout on the group three days prior.
Cabbage
During a discussion on how the rest of the group should move forward after George’s departure on the 10th, John wonders if they should get George back at all, suggesting his role as a Beatle is replaceable (unlike his own or Paul’s), and likens this unkindly to how Ringo first replaced Pete Best. Paul notes that John has been the top buck in getting himself heard (and getting his way) since the inception of the group (which John protests) and quickly reassures Ringo when he wryly declares himself to be little more than rabbit food for the group. Paul admits that both he and John have done one over on George, albeit unconsciously as an effect of the competition and unaware of how it may have hurt George in the process, but John argues that he’s known since early childhood how manipulative he himself can be, and has tried to curb it to little avail.
What You Are
In the middle of a personal discussion with John and Ringo about the band, its tenuous future, and their relationships with one another, Paul (in response to John’s admission of insecurity in the face of external pressures from the public and media to perform) is emphatic about his faith in them and their abilities and contends that whatever interpersonal problems they have can be resolved, for what their music is worth.
Working At A Relationship
While Yoko and Paul conduct their own conversation with each other, Linda talks to John about the inevitable difficulties any relationship faces - even in the context of a musical partnership - and why it doesn’t prove the relationship itself is an expired one. John (inexplicably or not) laments that the White Album doesn’t sound like the genuine, inspired band collaboration they achieved in the past. 
You've Got To Blame Yourself
As Paul encourages an unconfident Ringo to go ahead with his plans to record a solo LP, John hedgingly brings up his own apprehensions about following his instincts (especially when he’s not even sure what he really wants to do). In their inimitable and emotionally non-committal fashion, John and Paul engage in metaphors about intentions, conveying these intentions in actions, and how these actions may be conveyed by those who see it. (Basically: what John and Paul talk about when they talk about love.)
How Much More Have I Done Towards Helping You Write?
John and Paul have an obfuscating conversation about their songwriting partnership and creative process, which has been incapacitated by a lack of direction, misplaced (misread) intentions, and the unmet (unrealised) expectations they’ve inflicted upon each other. (In other words: issues. And some projecting of issues onto George, for good measure.)
What We're All About
In the midst of a personal discussion about working together within the band, John tries to explain the disconnect in their process, and why he can’t envision their songs the way Paul can. As both John and Paul circle around the issues of honest communication and (living up to) each other’s expectations, they eventually project onto George bring George into the quandary of the Lennon-McCartney partnership.

to distract.
I whipped this up just now, hope it does the prompt justice!
John can tell Ringo is in his head again. The normally effervescent, happy-go-lucky man is quiet and reserved, only giving one- or two-word answers when someone asks him a question. And in the studio, he keeps to himself, seemingly content to let the others do their own thing without him. He sits behind his kit, smoking cigarette after cigarette, sometimes drinking. Paul, George, Mal, George Martin, they all ask if he's okay. And of course, Ringo says he is. Just an “off day”. He'll be fine. But John knows the truth. Ringo isn't okay, at least not now. After all, he's grown to know this Ringo all too well.
But he can't do what he wants to do while the others are around. He can't do the one thing he knows will distract Ringo from those voices in his head, the ones that tell him the band would be better with someone different. A drummer who could actually sing (John happens to love Ringo's singing voice, but he knows Ringo is insecure about it) and write songs. Someone better-looking. The voices that tell him that he doesn't matter. So while they're in the studio, John gives subtle affection when he can. An encouraging smile and praise after a take. A gentle pat on the back when nobody is looking. It isn't what he wants to do, but he can't do it in public. Not when he knows the others will be disgusted with him. Scouser men don't hug, much less what John wants to do. Not when something as simple as this is illegal. It pains him, but John is very good at hiding his emotions. He's done it all his life. Maybe he should go into real acting.
So when the session ends, they all leave separately. Ringo goes first, followed by George, then John a bit later after he and Paul finished some lyrics. John heads out when the song is deemed decent, going to the flat he shares with Ringo. Everyone thinks they're flatmates, living together out of convenience and not that kind of love. Fine with John, though sometimes he wishes he could be more open with it. Sometimes. On days when his struggles with his sexuality aren't overwhelming, that is. But that's a story for another day. Right now, Ringo is John's concern.
“Ringo?” John asks once he's inside, putting his keys in a small bowl on a table by the door.
Silence.
He goes into the living room, expecting Ringo to be on the sofa with a finger of whiskey. He looks over the back of the faded brown couch. Nothing. Ringo isn't in the kitchen, outside, anywhere John looks. And he searches the flat like a detective on the hunt for clues. So he goes to the only place left, their bedroom. He finds the door closed. Mystery solved. Just call him Sherlock Holmes. Or Sherlock Lennon, if he's being serious. John shakes his head, pushing the silly thought out of his mind. Now isn't the time to joke. He knows Ringo is far down the rabbit hole if he's closed himself in their bedroom. His heart sinks somewhere around the region of his stomach. He wishes he could silence those demons in Ringo's head, get the man to see that's just as good as the rest of the band. That they'd be lost without his steady backbeat, and, if he's honest with himself, his maturity. Ringo is the glue. The band would fall apart without him. He carefully knocks on the door.
“Richie? 'm home,” John says.
“'s good.”
“Can I come in for a sec?”
“Sure.”
So John opens the door and goes in, and what he sees is like a knife to his heart. He knows Ringo is small, but now he's positively miniscule. He's curled in on himself in as tight of a ball as he can manage. He hasn't been crying, at least John doesn't think so. But he can still see Ringo's hurting. And when Ringo sits up to half-heartedly greet him and John gets a look at those bright blue eyes, it's like someone's twisting the knife.
There's so much pain in those eyes, a silent pleading for John to do something about it. To make the voices go away. There's always a sort of sadness in Ringo's eyes, but now it's deeper. Like it goes all the way down to his soul. And around Ringo, John knows he can be open and vulnerable. He trusts the man, after all. He can be kind and gentle. He doesn't have to put up this tough, manly front. So he sits beside Ringo and opens his arms.
“I've got you,” John whispers as Ringo settles against his chest.
Ringo clings to John almost desperately as John's arms slide around the smaller man's body. They sit there for a moment, and Ringo ends up on John's lap. He doesn't mind. Not at all. After a few long, quiet moments, John pulls back, tilts Ringo's chin up, and leans in. Their eyes shut simultaneously, and Ringo tilts his head to the side. He knows what John is going to do. The one thing he's needed all day.
The one thing that can silence the voices better than anything, even alcohol.
John leans in and kisses Ringo softly, his thin lips pressed lovingly against Ringo's full, plush ones. He lets it linger. It's chaste, nothing sexual behind it. But as good of a songwriter as John is, the kiss can say what Ringo needs to hear more than even the most beautiful of prose. It's the perfect distraction.
Because for that moment, it's silent in Ringo's mind. No thoughts of being inferior. Or how the band would be better with a different drummer. Or anything. There's just one thought in his mind right now.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that you shouldn't put rabbits in small, enclosed areas, nor keep them in cages.
Additionally, generally, you shouldn't pick them up.
Lennon the Bunny on YouTube (link) is an amazing resource for learning about how to care for them.
Look, I know you mean well, but this message is not at all a good thing to send.
You do not know all the details of how I care for my rabbits. Rabbits DO NOT need to be totally freeroam to be happy. My rabbits get time to run around the room their cages are in every day, and their cage is spacious with multiple levels and places for them to hide. I have discussed their living situation with MULTIPLE vets and received nothing but praise for how they are kept.
I do not pick up my rabbits unless they LET ME or it is NECESSARY. Emmet needs to be held to take his medications sometimes (and he doesn't give a shit about being picked up anyways, he never tries to avoid it.) They need to be picked up to be put in the carrier to go to the vet, or to be brushed when they're shedding (they will NOT stay still for it.) The girls don't like being held much, but they love to be taken to the couch or bed to cuddle, and have accepted that means having to be carried. Sometimes they even come up to me to be taken when I open the cage. And every time I go to pick them up for cuddles, I give them the option to leave - they know that if I put my hand under them, I want to pick them up, and if they don't want to be picked up they hop away!
Lennon the Bunny is a fine resource for basic info, but not at ALL the gold standard for bunny care, especially regarding her "playdates" for other rabbits with Lennon and her disdain for people who don't care for their rabbits exactly how she does. I have owned rabbits for nearly EIGHT YEARS now. I have done extensive research, talked with vets, and talked with many other rabbit owners, particularly in the r/rabbits discord. The vet we took Emmet to for his recent surgery said we seemed like some of the best rabbit owners she'd seen. You don't know anything about how I care for my rabbits, and I'd thank you to keep your nose out of people's business unless you see them actually harming their pets.
I don't know, I think they're pretty happy with how they live.

in my mind bundy and lennon moved to bundy's hometown in virginia to help his parents after he heard about his dad getting sick. they have a cozy three bedroom house on a sizable plot of land, plenty of space for their menagerie of pets they have after kiki leaves.
lennon, with all her medical experience, gets a job at a local veterinary clinic and eventually starts doing surgeries again, but on larger animals like horses and cows that don't require as much fine detail work as humans do. her hands still shake sometimes and the tendons and scars on her arms ache when it rains but she's saving lives and helping animals and that's all she's ever wanted to do.
bundy still doesnt make as much as lennon, but he does make some money. he becomes an author. he writes an autobiography at first, not about his entire life, but he writes out everything that happened during his investigation into the simones. it sells pretty well, everyone's curious to know what really happened with the super terrorist of los santos. after that, bundy decides to write more about his insane life as a detective in los santos. most of his books are sold as nonfiction, except for one. a supernatural novel about a man in a lighthouse who calls himself death. it's the least sold out of all his books, which bundy thinks is for the best. no need to give people any crazy ideas about knocking old doors, because the wrong one might open.
their house is old and falling apart, but all the repairs and improvements keep bundy busy because after all those years cleaning up other people's messes in the PD, he'd go stir crazy without having something to fix or improve. bundy mostly spends his days taking care of his parents, working on his next book, and installing whatever new flooring or light fixture he'd decided the house needed. their neighbors always ask bundy if he can fix their crumbling fence or leaky roof too, and he always does it free of charge.
the house has two floors and three bedrooms. their living room is always filled with dog toys and they have a nice spacious hutch enclosure for their rabbits. on the first floor is two bedrooms, their bedroom is soundproofed (as always) and their guest bedroom is always kept tidy and open for any of their seven hundred children whenever they come to visit.
the second floor has only one bedroom with a big open window that faces east and lets sunlight flood the room every morning. there's fake ivy lining the walls, fairy lights perfectly hung but never turned on, an old guitar leaning against the wall, books sitting on a shelf, and a teddy bear laying on the bed. on the desk is various medical devices to monitor one's heart and blood pressure along with bottles of prescription medications that are half-empty and years out of date. inside the closet is neatly hung and folded clothes, the scent of whoever wore them faded yet still there somehow.
everything inside the room is covered in a layer of dust, except for the windowsill, where a pristine vase of sunflowers sits and soaks up the sun every morning. the flowers never get the chance to wilt and the water is always refreshed every morning.

Summary: Charles Blackwood comes to your home pretending to be your dead brother’s best friend. You know something is off with him and you start to investigate in who the real Charles is. You go down a rabbit hole and come across his dark past. Can you convince your father Charles isn't who he says he is or will Charles get to you first.
Late 50’s and your father was rich beyond his wildest dreams. He married into old money because of your mother. Of course your mother’s side of the family didn’t quite like your father because he belonged to new money. And old money hates new money because they considered them ‘tacky’.
But he won them over when your mother got pregnant with you and your brother.
You lived in a huge manor up North in New York. It was huge with 23 bathrooms and 27 bedrooms. A huge living room that leads into a gigantic kitchen. You had everything you could have wanted.
Your brother went off to war but never came home. It was a tough loss for your father. He became more secluded. Drowning himself in his work to cope. Your mother turned to drinking. She drank away the day and slept all night. Your mother became a ghost as well, never leaving her bedroom. Too sad to get up or too drunk out of her mind to care.
You felt alone in this big place without your brother. You really missed him but what could you do. So you moved on and went to college but for two years.
You were back home, helping your parents out. And that’s when the big bad wolf came into your life.

A red Chevrolet Corvette drove up to the manor. Charles smiled as he stopped the engine. Your dad opened the door and walked out to greet him. “Mr. Blackwood. It’s nice to finally meet our son’s best friend. We didn’t even know he had friends from?”
“Milwaukee,” Charles said with a soft smile. He opened his car door to go shake your father’s hand. The two of them shook hands, your dad clasped his hand on his back. His other hand extended to his home, “shall we go inside.” The two of them walked inside.
You laid on your stomach on your towel, a magazine in front of you. Your lips were painted red. Your hair curled to perfection. You wore high waisted red bottoms with a white bikini top. Your fingernails and toes were painted a deep cherry red. Red heart sunglasses on your face.
You were outside by the pool, enjoying the warmth of the sun on your back. The pool water glistened under the sunlight.
You reached over to grab the pink lollipop. You stuck it in your mouth, sucking on the tart flavor. You pulled it out with a pop. You moved to the next page in the magazine. The Beatles were plastered over the page, you squealed in delight.
Your finger touching over John Lennon’s face. “I would marry you in a heartbeat.” You giggled to yourself. Your father walked out with Charles, “oh Y/N. Come greet our guest for the week.” You turned to Charles and pulled your red sunglasses down the bridge of your nose.
“Daddy, I’m busy.” You pushed your lollipop back in your mouth before turning back over to your magazine.
Charles let his eyes wander over your body. Taking in the way the red looked against your skin. He wasn’t expecting to see that your brother had a sister. He thought he was just going to scam your parents but now.
He thinks he might want to take another souvenir home. Your dad turned to him with a smile, “alright princess. Let’s go see my wife. I’m sure she is in the library.”
They left you all alone. You went back to lounging around by the pool.

You were still outback when Charles appeared again but this time alone. You watched as he walked over to you. His suit was a little baggy on him, hiding his athletic build. He stood in front of you and he looked down at you. A smirk on his lips.
You closed your magazine shut. “Hey there, we didn’t get the chance to properly meet. I’m Charles Blackwood, I served with your brother.” His hands were stuffed in his pants pockets.
“Nice to meet you. Is there a reason you are in our home?” He kneeled down in front of you. “Your father invited me because I was his best friend.”
“Bullshit, I was his best friend. I’ve never heard of you. And he told me practically everything.” He sucked his teeth, “Ladies aren’t supposed to swear. It’s very unladylike. I guess he didn’t tell you everything, what a bummer.”
You rolled your eyes behind your shades. “I don't care if it’s unladylike,” you sat back on the heel of your feet. You stood up from the towel grabbing your magazine with you. “I was just trying to be friendly but I can see you don’t want that.” He said as he stood up too, the two of you staring at each other. “I’ll see you around Y/N,” he said with a wink before leaving.
You clutched the magazine against your chest as you watched him going back inside the house.

You bumped into your father who dropped his papers all over the floor. “Princess, you have to pay attention to where you are walking.” Your father bent down to gather all his papers, you crossed your arms as you pouted at your father. “Daddy, Charles is weird and I don’t think he should be staying in this house. He needs to leave.” Your father sighed as he shuffled his papers in order.
“Let’s not be rude, now. He’s going through a lot and the least we can do is to give him a place to say. Go check on your mother and see if she is okay.  I have to get back to work.” Your father walked away and into his office. You screamed at your father’s incompetence before stomping to your room.
You slammed your door shut behind you to show that you were angry but your father barely heard it. After all you were all the way on the west wing while your father’s office was in the east wing. You threw your magazine down on top of your bed before putting on a new outfit. You wore a pair of yellow slacks and a black and yellow checkered shirt.
You tied the shirt up in the front to show off your midriff. Wore yellow flats to pull the look together. You sat in front of your mirror as you brushed your girls out, opting to wear your hair in pigtails. You wiped away the red lipstick to go for a more natural look. You cocked your head to the side as you looked at yourself in the mirror.
Feeling satisfied with the look you went to go check on your mother. You twirled your hair around your finger. You hummed the latest song from the Beatles as you made your way down the big hallway. Large paintings covered the wall along with outdated wallpaper. A huge window at the end of the hall that was wide open.
Charles walked out of his room and smiled as he watched you come down. He took in the outfit you wore, not liking that you wanted to wear pants. He thought women looked better in skirts or dresses. Thought women looked manly in jeans, his eyes trailed over your exposed midriff. He wanted you to cover up. Didn’t want anyone else to see his future misses exposed skin.
“Hi, there princess.” You looked at Charles with a frown. “This house is big enough to fit four families and yet I keep running into you.” Charles closed his bedroom door and followed you closely. “Does your father let you out of the house dressed like that?” You ignored him as you finally made it to your mother’s room.
You opened the door and tried to close the door in Charles' face but he tried to force his way in. You stomped on his foot before slamming the door in his face. You turned to your mother who was smoking by the window. “That Charles boy is certainly a looker. You should think about settling down one of these days.”
You rolled your eyes as you joined your mother by the window. “Mom, there are other things in this world to worry about then marriage.” She laughed at the nonsense you spewed. “I beg a differ honey. Do you want to die an old hag?”

Your mom wanted you to go buy more alcohol for her. She didn’t want to ask your father because she knew it would end in an argument. The sun was setting when you got back, you took a detour to go shopping. Something to help ease your mind over the pesky problem you were having.
You drove up the gravel driveway to see your father and Charles smoking cigars. You took the car over to the garage. You grabbed the shopping bags and walked inside. You put away your mom’s alcohol before going to your room.
You decided to take a bath as you thought of how you could expose Charles. He was really fishy, your brother would have told you about his best friend. The two of you shared a lot of secrets to each other. He would have never kept something like that away from his baby sister.

You came downstairs for another lonely dinner wearing a white nightgown. You held a book underneath your arm, bare feet shuffling into the dinning room. There was Charles at the head of the table, eating his food. He looked up at you with a smile on his face.
“You look beautiful. I didn’t expect you to come down in pajamas,” you ignored him and sat down in your spot. “When someone compliments you, you say thank you back.”
The server brought out your dinner and a glass of wine. You didn’t look at Charles as you are your dinner. “Should I put you over my knee and spank your ass raw?” You turned your head up at him in disgust.
“I’ve lost my appetite, thank you for that.” You stood from the table, storming off to your room. Charles continued to eat with a smirk on his face. After dinner he started to look for valuable things your parents had laying around. .
He was already getting a huge sum of money from your father. Made up a sob story that his house burned down with his cousins. When in reality he got rid of them and is living the life he deserves.
He just got bored being all alone in that big manor. That’s why he thought he could scam again to bring some fun. But seeing you, he wants a housewife that will serve him. Help take away some of that boredom, maybe even have kids.

HERE ARE SOME HEADCANNONS about the basic background info on my son, i might write his full bio.....i might not, WHO KNOWS, but i probs will. for now, here’s some need to know background:
theo was left in the foster care system at a very young age, his mother was an addict who gave him up in favor of continuing her life of addiction, but he was VERY QUICKLY adopted by the age of 2.
the family who adopted him already had an older son, who at the time was 6, and also eventually gave birth to a daughter who is 5 years younger than he was (she was a miracle baby).
he has diagnosed adhd, it was pretty intense when he was younger but after getting medication for it and diving into sports, it’s calmed down a bit...although it does still tend to flair up every now and then.
theo’s family was middle class, they lived in newark, new york (right outside new york city) in a humble home and were very tight knit. of course they had little family arguements here and there but, over all, he had a very wholesome childhood.
he found out he was adopted when he was pretty young, it wasn’t like his parents needed to tell him, he didn’t really look like his siblings or parents in the slightest but he was always assured that they loved him regardless and theo knew they meant that.
VERY MUCH involved in sports all throughout his life given his athletic ability, he loves sports (don’t get him started because he won’t stop). honestly, he just loves being involved and being a part of something. to quote high school musical “being a part of something special MAKES you special.”
outside of sports, however, he loves music...picking up guitar (mostly to impress a girl when he was younger) and he has a decent singing voice although he very much is more of a jock than a performer.
hermes claimed him when he was 12, he found out he was a demi-god when he was sixteen.
right before his sixteenth birthday, he was severely injured in a football game against another team. it was a rare day when he was off, as if something drained his energy, and he dislocated his shoulder. it was the ONLY TIME he used his powers to steal a larger amount of money since his parents would have to pay a lot for the surgery.
he is currently studying PSYCHOLOGY (cognitive) due to his adhd and wanting to learn more and help other people out there who might be struggling, although knowing how all over the place he is...he may switch at some point, who knows with him tbh??

DAY TWO: “They’re going to kill me, aren’t they?”

In Chapter 33 of Carry that Weight,  there’s a lot going on, including a raucous dinner replete with Tales of Prostitutes, but the laughter doesn't last long. With John Dawson's help, Lennon finally tells Paul about the published photo. When Paul seems to handle that well, shows him the jeering card sent to him by his attackers. Things then go off the rails as Paul spirals into mania, first vowing an aggressive response full of bravado, and then wondering why he can't just die. Brian arrives with enough marijuana to level him a bit, but then the men try to force music on him -- John tries to encourage him by singing a meaningful song, and Paul finally gets truly violent. It's a bad, bad night -- Paul's worst night, by far, since leaving the hospital -- and by its end, everyone but Paul is wondering whether he needs to be committed, somewhere. Yes, really.

Paul looked up from below his lashes. He seemed a picture of perfect vulnerability, but his words were direct and to the point.
“They’re going to kill me, aren’t they, John Dawson? They think I’m a rabbit and they’re on a chase.”
John gasped, grabbing at his wrist. “Paulie, no! No, baby, don’t even think that.”
Dawson, never one to offer a pacification in a serious situation, cleared his throat and thought, just this once. “It’s possible, you know, son, that they’re simply trying to torment you. They know you are protected, that the palace has an interest here. They must know that Chalice is in jail and could still identify them, at some point.”
“So, you’re saying…” Paul gulped hugely, still in that strangely lucid state. “You’re saying they’re… what? Gloating? Just trying to haunt me?”
“Maybe,” John Dawson said, nodding as thought to convince the room. “Trying to keep you scared and wounded, because they feel powerful, like they have something on you.”
“Well, fuck them, then.”
The words were flung out almost malevolently and both Dawson and Lennon looked at each other, mouths agape. Paul stood once more, his whole body seeming to vibrate with some combination of terror and pure, unalloyed rage. “Fuck them,” he repeated. Looking down at his place, he ran a hand through his hair, huffing like a bull as he seemed to be considering something. With a sudden, furious grimace he swept his place setting from the table, sending plates and glasses shattering against the floor and walls. “Maybe I should just go out there -- just go out into the street and tell it,” he seethed through gritted teeth. A muscle in his jaw was jumping wildly.
“I’ll just… I’ll just go shout it out. Let them know they’ll never have me again! That I’m no shrinking rabbit they can play with. That I’m a fucking fox and I’ll find a way to escape. I’ll outsmart them.”

Lennon Green is used to having the rug pulled out from under her. When she was fourteen and her dad relocated them from England to Indiana, she stopped eating for days. When she was sixteen and Steve tore their group apart by dating Nancy, she locked herself in her room and ignored even Tommy and Carol, before finally deciding to make Steve fix things. Her mother always told her that sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. That was true when she moved – she ended up with some amazing friends and levels of popularity that most girls only dream of.  But as she falls down the rabbit hole, filled with monsters and superpowers, she hopes that this story has a damn good ending to make up for what she’s about to discover.

Being An Actress

I remember the moment I decided I wanted to be an actress. I was walking across the parking lot of my high school after an undoubtedly stellar performance as Portia in an all-girl production of The Merchant of Venice when my father turned to me and said, "Do you think you might want to do this for a living?" At the time I remembered feeling a little insulted. My grades were excellent. Didn't my father think I could be a lawyer or a veterinarian or a psychologist? It wasn't that I didn't love to act, but everyone I knew who wanted to be an actress was either egotistical or unstable. Not that one was mutually exclusive of the other. What did this say about me? No one in my family acted, although my Grandmother often hinted of an unsubstantiated family connection to Hermoine Gingold. Occasionally my parents would take us to see a play or listen to a concert, but only to help make us well-rounded individuals. When someone would go on about the Sound of Music my father would roll his eyes and say, “How can I take a nun singing on hilltops seriously?” And I found myself admitting that he had a point.
When I was four I appeared on Romper Room for an unprecedented two weeks. At the time my best friend, Mary Lou, had been selected for the local cable network but her incredibly shy demeanor had her mother worried.
“She’s gonna sit there like a sack of potatoes.” Mrs. Dean told my Mother who quickly suggested that I accompany Mary Lou for moral support.
“What do I have to do?” I asked my mother as she was tucking me into bed.
“Just be yourself,” she replied. My mother knew exactly what that meant. Naturally loquacious I kept things hopping on the set by constantly commenting on the camera man kissing the teacher. When asked what my father had in his garage, I remarked that it was presumptuous to even assume we had one. There was some discussion about a third week, but Miss Dawson put her foot down and said I was stealing the show.
Soon I was taking dance classes and skating lessons. My first stage appearance was as a rabbit in the famous ballet, Bugs Bunny's Birthday Party. I was excited because we second tiered rabbits were going to eat sandwiches on stage. Then disaster struck. The sandwiches were going to be peanut butter and I hated peanut butter. Teary eyed I complained to my mother who told me to grin and bear it. “That’s acting,” she said.
In grade four I wrote a play about a pair of motorcycle lovers and sang Baby Driver while they straddled their desks and rode off into the sunset.
“Hit the road and I’m gone.
What’s your number?
I wonder how your engine feels?”
“Okay,” Mrs. Orcutt interrupted, “I think that’s all the time we have for that today.”
After my father gave me his blessing to pursue a career on the stage, I decided to explore all of my options. I auditioned for an amateur theatre company and played bird #4 in Aristophanes’ The Birds, and a milk maid in Galt MacDermot’s musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona. Not exactly earth-shattering roles, but I knew there was a pecking order (no pun intended) and that dues must be paid. In Niagara Falls, where I lived as a teenager, there were two amateur companies. The youth group that took over the Firehall Theatre in the summer months of July and August, and the adult group that staked their claim the rest of the year. The youth company was run entirely by a handful of 18 to 20-year-olds who took themselves very seriously. We stretched ourselves artistically, which is really just another way of saying that were out of our depth. I remember as Bertha in Pippin I had to say, "Men raise flags when they can't get anything else up." At the time I had no idea what that meant but I certainly enjoyed the response I got every time I said it.  
The amateur theatre company in the neighbouring city of St. Catharines were doing large scale musicals with professional directors and a cast of a thousand. Even I could tell the difference between Garden City’s production of West Side Story and the Niagara Falls Music Theatre Production of A Shadow Box. We told ourselves that we were doing something significant for the five or six audience members who sat in the dark to watch us perform. “At least they can appreciate art.” we told ourselves, ignoring the occasional snore beyond the footlights.  When someone who had seen our production complained in the paper that “…smut didn’t belong on stage.” I was devasted. “Some people just don’t know a good thing when they see it,” I ranted, “It’s a Pulitzer award winning play.”  I forgot that we weren’t Tony award winning actors.
Anxious to spread my wings and get a taste of the real thing, I auditioned for a one-act play festival at the nearby University and managed to get the part of an uptight bible thumper in an original musical called A Hundred Bucks a Week. It was the story of a topless shampoo parlourist who castrates a guy with her teeth. Did I mention that it was narrated by a cat? I still remember singing:
“We all must be as babies in the garden.
Smiling with our mouths all bright and new.
Innocently smelling lovely roses.
Not prying with our fingers in dog doo.”
Needless to say, my father was a little shocked when an actress appeared on stage topless while I sang my heart out in a futile effort to convert her. This time as he walked me across the parking lot to the car he suggested that perhaps I should seriously consider journalism at Carleton. “Impossible!” I stated dramatically, “I’m an actress.” And I actually believed it.
I arrived at University wearing vintage clothes with frizzy hair and John Lennon glasses. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to be Doris Finsecker from Fame or Janice Joplin. My dorm room-mate was an engineering student who was the first to know of a kegger and had never seen a play in her life. She often returned to our room late at night reeking of booze and sludge water after spontaneous dips in the Detroit River.
At theatre school I was told I couldn’t dance, I couldn’t sing, I had speech impediments and a wandering left eye that would completely destroy any hopes of a career in film “Too bad you didn’t have it looked at when you were a kid,”one professor told me, “It’s easily treatable if caught when you are young.” At the age of five I was a frequent visitor to Sick Kids Hospital for my eye and wore a patch over my glasses for a year. It didn’t cure me. So much for trusting the knowledge of my professors. Strike one!
I began to sink under the pressure of looks and expectations. While the rest of the women in my class wasted away proclaiming to have eaten nothing but broccoli over Thanksgiving, I gained seven pounds over a new found love of peanut butter and developed a bad attitude towards anyone who encouraged me to “feel space”. When my teacher overheard me mutter under my breath one day that I hated improve she called a class meeting to discuss why I hated her. Everyone stared at me shocked and disappointed. Why was I resisting the pu-pu platter of techniques spread out before me? “You’re a very stubborn actress,” the teacher announced, “but I’m going to break you.” That was strike two.
At my first semester tutorial I was told that I had talent, but I wasn’t tall, thin or pretty enough. “You have the face of Sally Field,” the department head told me, “but the body of Kathy Bates.” Strike three.  I went home for Christmas and announced to my father that I was dropping out to focus, instead, on getting into a proper theatre school in New York. After all, I reasoned, it’s where I really wanted to be anyway.
There is probably nothing quite as depressing as returning to your hometown in the middle of winter when all of your friends are away at school having the time of their lives. The overall perception is that you have failed. It didn’t help to think that I had willfully brought myself to this point in time. The phrase, “small fish in a big pond” kept going around in my head. While my best friends were acing all of their classes and dating interesting freshmen, I was eating cookies, and counting the days until everyone would return to amuse me. In the meantime, I moped around the apartment, wrote letters to theatre schools and read a lot of plays.
“You have to get a job.” My father announced and for the first time I was forced to slog my way through the want ads in a half assed attempt to find work at either a wax museum or a fudge shop. Completely unqualified for anything except theatre, I was forced to become a chamber maid at a tacky little hotel near Clifton Hill. Picking up after the kind of clientele that honeymoon in tacky hotels in Niagara Falls is enough to get one thinking seriously about their life choices. Maybe Dad had been right. A career in the theatre wasn’t looking so good anymore. Something had been tarnished from University and I couldn’t pretend that my trajectory to success was going to be one clear straight line to the top. I’d hit rock bottom and was picking up the condom rappers and dirty Kleenex to show it.
There have been many times in my career when I’ve been very close to throwing in the towel and becoming a real-estate agent or a tour guide.  At each one of those moments of genuine universal surrender something miraculous always happens. That year it was a letter of acceptance from the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. By now my father, less convinced that I could make a go of it, made me a deal. If I could find a place to live in Manhattan within a week, he would allow me to go. So, I boarded the train in Buffalo and headed for the Big Apple.
I arrived in New York at around 2:00 PM on a very, very hot day in August. I walked straight to the library, took out the Village Voice, circled an advertisement seeking a room-mate for a four-bedroom brownstone on the Upper West Side, was interviewed at 7:00 PM and secured my living accommodations within twenty-four hours. It didn’t matter to me that I had no idea who the three men I’d be living with were. The place was nice and the price was right. I think I heard my father drop the phone when I called to tell him that I had accomplished the impossible. Studying in New York proved to be the best and possibly the worst thing that ever happened to me. I developed a philosophy of acting that has served me in every way, but it also created a high standard that hasn’t always been easy to live up to.

A few years ago, I was invited to direct a production of Blue Stockings at the same University I had so unceremoniously departed from those many years ago. Parallel universes collided as images of my past kept imposing themselves on the present. There was the quad I had been initiated in. There was the building where I’d slept and laughed and cried. There was my window with the view of the cemetery and McDonalds. There was the library where I looked up the address of every theatre school in New York. There was the theatre I did my practicum in, all pretty much the same as the day I left it. The walls, hallways, buildings hadn’t changed, but I had. I didn’t need reassurance anymore. I didn’t need someone to tell me what I wasn’t or couldn’t be. If only we could teach students the value of tenacity and resilience.
I enjoyed directing that class. I hope I encouraged and inspired them. I was happy when they came to rehearsals in sweats and tee shirts, less concerned about how they looked than we had been. More confident in their choices. More involved. On Opening night after the cheers and flowers and the congratulations, it felt good to climb into the car and head for home. I’m not cut out for institutions. I don’t like the brick and the neon and the bureaucracy. Still, it was good to make my peace with that time in my life. On the four-hour drive to Niagara I was thinking about the young people I had just worked with making the transition from student to actor. Maybe some of them will end up in New York. Maybe not. The thing about acting is it can take you anywhere…from Romper Room to the stars with a few tacky hotels in between.

In Novermber (?) 1974, John Lennon interviewed himself for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine. The interview, as the title in the pictures say, is conducted by/on John Lennon, and/or Dr Winston O’boogie. For those who don’t know, Dr Winston O’boogie is a pseudonym John used to use. 
Here, John talks about Walls And Bridges, seeing UFO’s in New York, producing other artists’ albums, Klein and how “he was unfaithful”,the other beatles, and sex with men... Of course Paul and Brian were brought into this... *snort*
The interview is rather long. You can enlarge the pictures above, or read the transcript that I will add below.

INTERVIEW:
Q. Well, er, John it's been a long time no speak....
A. Has it been that long?
Q. Probably, anyway, what have you been doing since we last talked?
A. Oh, the usual.......
Q. I see, well, weren't you supposed to be making an oldies album with Phil (for is it he) Spector?
A. Yes, we started in '73, but it never ended, even Alex beeinhisbonnet Bennett noticed that.
Q. Then suddenly, as it were, you were working with that great radio star, Harry (Buckminster) Nilsson.
A. Quite right! I produced his album, "Pussycats" out now, at a reasonable discount, then went on to make my own reasonably wonderful album, "Walls And Bridges" out now, which includes the fast rising single, "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" featuring my close friend and fiancee, Elton John, on piano and vocal harmony.
Q. Do you feel that you new album, "Walls And Bridges" is a step forward in your never ending search for artistic fulfillment, the struggle of the lonely........
A. I went to party in L.A., just to look at Liz Taylor, was I thrilled to meet her, and on top of everything, who, but who, do you think was all over her armpit? None other than the great, great show, David The Bowie! Wow! Was I thrilled to see that they were both smaller than me!
Q. The track I liked best was that miserable one about "Nobody loves you when......."
A. And Brian Wilson was there too and Ringo and Elton, and it was somebody's 21st.......
Q. Do you mean smaller physically?
A. I feel quite happy about the album. "Walls And Bridges" out now, the tittle of which, was sent from above in the guise of a public service announcement.
Q. How How! I was meaning to ask you, John, what you thought of the Bealtefest, and why you didn't go, and are you getting back together again, how's your immigration, and is it true about you and.......
A. Great. Nervous. You never know. Very appealing. If you want to help, write your congressperson, or some such similar.....
Q. About those dreadful stories that came out of L.A. with you and Harry, etc.....
A. Mostly fiction, with a grain of alcohol....
Q. I mean you don't have to answer, but did you rape a waitress in the Rainbow.....?
A. I never actually laid a hand on anyone, in fact, it was impossible, I was carried out...
Q. But.... But.... Todd Rudgren said that you.......
A. That's what you get for reading fanzines.
Q. Do you like glitter?
A. Yes.
Q. Talking of the Beatlefest, didn't you find it strange that David Peel and Alex Beeinhisbennet were both there playing 5th Beatle?
A. Yes! Considering that the day before I'd seen Peel on cable TV screaming about the Beatles ripping people off etc. etc... Alex? Well, he's sooo controversial! He's just getting into Andy Warhol you know, he's very deep.
Q. Didn't you produce an album of Peel's for Apple?
A. Yes, one of the highlights of my career!
Q. Who else have you produced records for in you astonishing but sometimes perfectly ordinary life?
A. Elephant's Memory, Yoko, Harry... myself.
Q. Now that you've been living in N.Y. 3 years, do you still....
A. If you look closely at the wonderful "Walls And Bridges", out now, album package, you will notice a little notice saying, "I saw a U.F.O..." why don't you ask me about that?
Q. Oh, I hadn't noticed, did you really... where you drunk? high? having a primal?
A. No. Actually I was very straight. I was lying naked on my bed, when I had this urge...
Q. Don't we all...?
A. So I went to the window, just dreaming around in my usual poetic frame of mind, to cut a long short story, there, as I turned my head, hovering over the next building, no more than a hundred feet away was this thing... with ordinary electric light bulbs flashing on and off round the bottom, one non blinking red light on top.... what the Nixon is that! I says to myself (for no one else was there)... Is it a helicopter? No! It makes no noise... ah then, it must be a ballon! (Frantically trying to rationalize it, in all my too human way) but no!! Balloons don't look like that, nor do they fly so low, yes folks, it was flying (very slow, about 30 m.p.h.,) below.... I repeat, below most roof tops (i.e. higher than the 'old building' lower than the 'new'.) all the time it was there, I never took my eyes off it, but I did scream to a friend who was in another room "Come and look at this" etc. etc. My friend came running and bore witness with me. Nobody else was around. We tried to take pictures (shit on my polaroid, it was bust) with a straight camera. We gave the film to Bob Gruen to develop, he brought back a blank film.... said it looked like it had been thru the radar at customs.... well, it stayed around for a bit, then sailed off.......
Q. Did you check to see.......
A. Yeh, yeh, the next day Bob (is it in focus) Gruen rang the Daily News, Times, police to see if any one else reported any thing. Two other people and or groups of/ said they too saw something..... anyway I know what I saw.......
Q. Aren't you afraid of people won't believe you.... crazy Lennon/Maharishi/etc....
A. That's just one of the many burdens I will have to bear in this day of waterbabies, inflation, generation crap, highly influential but not untidy....
Q. That's very brave of you, John, talking of Marharishi, what is the concept behind your new album, "Walls And Bridges," out now?
A. It's an unconcept album....
Q. But it has to have one.......
A. No it doesn't
Q. Yes it does.. take the first track for instance "Going Down On Love," that seems to be saying something....
A. Next you'll be asking me who "Steel And Glass" is about (3rd track side 2..).. I can tell you who it isn't about, for instance, it's not about Jackie Kennedy, Mort Sahl, Sammy Davis, Better Midler... Eartha Kitt, it's not about her either....
Q. It's not Paul again... is it? I mean you two are like... I mean grow up...
A. Wrong again.
Q. Everyone's saying this is your best album since Imagine... how do you feel?
A. I prefer the "Mother/Working Class Hero" then "Imagine" album myself.. Anyway, I suppose anything you do is either better or worse than something or other, I mean, that's how we seem to categorize things..... it's probably the way we remember.... it helps us remember... "this fish tastes as good as the fish we had in St. Tropez, but not as nice as the one Arthur caught off Long Island, do you remember that fish and chip shop in Blackpool..."
Q. I'm supposed to keep this up for a few more pages... when actually I'd finished the whole thing on "do you like glitter?"
A. Yes.
Q. It's so hard to think of questions to ask you, I mean, you must have been asked nearly everything over that last few year... is there anything you'd like to say, you know, instead of just answering these dumb... I mean you can say ANTYTHING YOU WANT.... I'm sure you mus have something to say that you haven't said already.......
A. Not really.......
Q. Oh.......
A. I'll ask you one. Why does Roman Polansky always wear the same suit?
Q. I'm stumped.
A. To get to the other side! Silly!
Q. My turn... What happened between you and Klein?
A. He was unfaithful.......
Q. I mean, you always seem to get in so DEEP, with things, then the next minute...

Q. That's deep... do you see much of the other ex Beatles? Or is it a sore point?
A. I love my little Beatles... I've seen a lot of Ringo... cause he comes to America a lot, as you know, I can't leave here or they'd do a Charlie Chaplin on me and I don't want an award at sixty, telling me how wonderful I used to be, but not quite wonderful enough to be allowed to live here now.... Paul, Ringo and I spent some nice afternoons in L.A. He (Paul and Linda) also came to visit in New York recently, and we had a great evening reminiscing.. in fact, it was two great evenings... which reminds me... only yesterday... to coin a phrase.... he and lovely Linda sent me a heartwarming telegram about my new album, "Walls And Bridges," out now...
Q. Don't you ever stop name dropping and plugging your album, "Walls And Bridges," out now?
A. Not if I can help it!
Q. It is rather gross, John....
A. 20% in fact....
Q. How cute! I see you never mentioned George... is there something....
A. No it's just that he hasn't been here in such a long time.
Q. Is it true you and Ringo are going to appear with him on his upcoming tour?
A. Not on your nelly! Just another rumour Dr.....
Q. Why not? It sounds like fun...
A. No one ever asked... and he probably wants all the loot for himself...
Q. That's a little bitter sounding, John, people might get the wrong idea....
A. No, it's just a pleasant reality, my dear, nothing more nothing less..
Q. Todd Rundgren said you were a "fucking idiot" in an english rock paper, what do you have to say to that?
A. I appreciate his concern...
Q. Is that all you're going to say.. I mean aren't you going to be bitingly witty or something?
A. Well.. I did write a little something... I sent it to the Melody Maker.. the trouble it.... I quite like the little rabbit....
Q. Have you any plans to go on tour? Like it's a long time since... what was it... Geraldo?..
A. I haven't got a band. It's not that easy without a band, I mean, you've got to start from scratch... I get a lot of offers to do benefits.. it makes me guilty to refuse... trouble is... the people that ask, don't understand the business...
Q. That sounds like a copout, John, if you don't mind me saying so...
A. Well, you're entitled to your opinion... I also get BIG MONEY offers too... but that doesn't make the job easier... slightly more interesting but...
Q. I HEAR YOU'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF RADIO.......
A. In connection with my new album, "Walls And Bridges," out now...
Q. How do you like being a d.j.?
A. Actually... I really enjoy it.. I was brought up on it... Radio, I mean,.. I've been thinking of doing something regular... for a few years now...I don't mean just playing records... but like, making tapes and... I wouldn't like to get stuck in there, you know, with formats and such... I thought the best thing to do would be to, you know, just make tapes and put them on W.B.A.I., Pacifica or whatever, they could have any money etc.. and I'd have fun... maybe I will.... I just never seem to get around to it.... tho I was talking to an old ex radio friend, Elliot (after dinner) Mintz, on the west coast, he said he'd love to help.... you know... well who knows....
Q. I'm sure a lot of people would love to....
A. Yes, yes quite.
Q. Talking of radio, I heard that you and... of all people... Howard Cosell... were going to do something together...
A. On radio, yes, I only heard about it today myself... hmmmm.. interesting..
Q. It's your birthday soon and you will be 34.. doesn't that worry you... you know 'aging pacifist, rock star crinkles before our eyes'.. that kind of thing..
A. 9th of October... send presents to Lennon Music, 1370 Ave. of the Americas, 6th floor... I quite like feeling the way I do, since thirty etc., in fact, it feels better than say 24... it's the sound of it, it SOUNDS sort of scary... you know.. life simply flashing by... and me still trying to get in the top ten and all... but it feels ok.
Q. Do you think you'll make any more movies, I mean, appear in them, like that Dick LEster thing... "How I Won The War?"
A. The main thing I learned from that... when was it 66/67? was that it's BORING, sitting 'round waiting for the director.. he has all the fun... not that I'm actually inundated with offers... but the things that do come my way are sort of... I think shit is the word I'm looking for.
Q. How about writing music for movies?
A. Well obviously I get offered more of that kind of thing, but it would have to really interest me.
Q. Why are you typing this as if someone was here with you, asking all these things?
Q. It makes a change... anyway, I enjoy typing... I only learned it last year... but my neck IS beginning to hurt and it's getting a bit boring..
Q. I'm sorry. Just a few more questions MR. LENNON, I'm sure you understand I have a deadline... my editor... etc..
A. Alright then, GET ON WITH IT!
Q. Have you ever fucked a guy?
A. Not yet, I thought I'd save it til I was 40, life begins at 40 you know, tho I never noticed it.
Q. It is trendy to be bisexual and you're usually 'keeping up with the Jones', haven't you ever... there was talk about you and PAUL...
A. Oh, I thought it was about me and Brian Epstein... anyway I'm saving all the juice for my own version of THE REAL FAB FOUR BEATLES STORY etc.. etc..
Q. It seems like you're saving quite a lot for when you're 40..
A. Yes, there might be nothing better to do, tho I don't believe it.
Q. Your life must be so Glamorous being a superstar and meeting people like Howard Cosell and Mayor Beame...
A. I havent met either of them...
Q. Well, you know what I mean... because of my association with you, people are always asking me 'What's he really like,' how can I them you're just a beautiful, shy, modest, amazingly creative, paranoid pop star?

When Paul McCartney Braved the Set of Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Death

Jane Asher is as well-known for acting as she is for dating an ex-Beatle, and in 1964 she brought Swinging London to the canteen of Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Death.
Based on the gothic short story “The Mask of the Red Death: A Fantasy,” the film remains the most ambitious installment in Corman’s Edgar Allen Poe cycle of movies, contrasting the bleak landscape of a dying village with the psychological torment of six rooms of color, and one with no color at all, just a deep black with a blood red crimson glow cast on it. Vincent Price stars as the sadistic and satanic Prince Prospero, whose darkness reigns over his dominions. 
Price wouldn’t be this malignant again until 1968’s Witchfinder General, which was retitled The Conqueror Worm, even though it had nothing to do with the Poe story. In Masque, he throws decadent orgies to distract himself from the catastrophes which rage out of his control around him. The Masque of the Red Death came out in 1964, but shot in London during the titillating Profumo Scandal of 1963, and the pampered and entitled characters Hazel Court (Hammer’s Curse of Frankenstein) and Patrick Magee (Dementia 13, A Clockwork Orange) played could have stood in for unholy political unions. The 19-year-old Asher, as virginal peasant girl Francesca, personified the bright lights of the other side of town.
Asher was an iconic face of Swinging London and the emerging youth culture of the early 1960s. Probably best recognized as the little girl who makes friends with the astronaut in The Quatermass Xperiment (1955), she was a child actress who first appeared on screen in the 1952 film Mandy. Before Jefferson Airplane warned about chasing “The White Rabbit,” Asher played the title role in Argo Records’ productions of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass in 1958. While her parts in films like The Greengage Summer, and the 1962 Disney production of The Prince and the Pauper increased her visibility, it was a spot on the BBC’s Juke Box Jury which forever tagged her name with the pop revolution which was swinging through London in the wake of the racket coming from the seaport of Liverpool.
Asher was 17 in 1963 when the British magazine Radio Times assigned her to cover a Beatles concert at the Royal Albert Hall. “Now these I could scream for,” she declared in the story when it came out. Asher’s onscreen persona and public profile personified hope and helpful activism which may have seemed naïve to the Prosperos of the older generation but lurked outside their castle walls. Asher’s flame-red hair promised as much of a danger to the old guard as the Red Death. And he brought that optimism to the set of Masque.
“Jane Asher was wonderful to work with,” Roger Corman tells Den of Geek while talking about the restoration of The Masque of Red Death. “She was a very young girl. She had worked on the stage. I think she was in the Young Shakespeare Group. And I don’t know if it was her first picture or not, but she was very good. She was an excellent actress and very good and easy to work with.”
Asher’s Francesca is so accommodating, she tells Prospero’s mistress Juliana, “I will do what I must to save my men. But if they die, I will die — and so will Prince Prospero.” Asher’s performance is fragile and courageous, giving the character sensuality and dignity. As part of “the Resistance,” she is a worthy opponent for Price’s dark prince. Although she is uneducated, she can counter his Satanic philosophies and self-serving moral relativism. She is also the stand-in for the audience to relate to as she ventures through the colored rooms with her eyes wide open, occasionally in shock.
The first cut of the film shocked the Catholic Legion of Decency in the U.S. and the British Board of Film Censors, which bemoaned the “Satanism and erotic costuming” on the screen, according to the booklet which comes in the restoration package. Corman cut nine frames from the scene where Francesca is stripped down and thrown into a bathtub because it gave the illusion of nudity. The removed frames ensured Asher’s breasts would not appear on screen.
Offscreen, Asher was just as fresh and friendly as her character. The actress was also dating a very famous musician, who happened to write a big hit for the band her brother, Peter Asher, was in. Den of Geek asked whether Asher introduced Corman to any of the other players in Swinging London.
“A little bit,” Corman says. “Jane and I used to have lunch together in the studio commissary. And on a Thursday, she said a friend of hers was traveling through, on his way to London the next day. Would it be all right if he came and watched a shooting during the morning, and we could all have lunch together? And I said, ‘Sure, fine.’
“So, I got a director’s chair, sitting next to mine, during the shooting. And it was a nice, young guy, and we talked during the shooting. And I explained to him a little bit between shots, how it all worked. And then we all, Jane, and he and I, had lunch together. And it all went very well. And at the end of the lunch, I said, ‘Jane tells me you’re going to London. What are you going to be doing in London?’ He said, ‘Well, I’m with a singing group from Liverpool, and we’re going to be making our debut tomorrow night in London.’”
Yes, it was Paul McCartney.
By that point, Corman had already made the jukebox movie Rock All Night, which featured the music of The Platters, and would go on to produce the 1979 punk movie classic Rock ‘n’ Roll High School. That film starred The Ramones, who got their name from Paul McCartney when he tried out the stage name Paul Ramon. But Corman had no clue who he was talking to back then, and the Mersey musician kept up his part in the masquerade of red sauce.
“He was very cool,” Corman says. “He knew that as an American, I didn’t know who The Beatles were, or what he was. And as he left, I said, ‘Well, good luck, Paul, on your debut in London tomorrow night.’ And I remember he was very cool. He understood, and he didn’t want to say, ‘Listen, buddy, we’re the number one group.’ He just said, ‘Well, we’re a singing group.’”
Whatever show it was Paul’s singing group was in town for, the band apparently passed the audition. “Then I saw the paper Sunday morning headlines, ‘Beatles conquer London,’” Corman remembers.

While McCartney never came back to the set again. It wasn’t the last informal encounter the two legends had. “We were at an Academy Award party, which was I think the Vanity Fair party, and I saw across the room Paul McCartney,” Corman recalls. “And I said, ‘Oh, there’s Paul over there.’ And my wife, Julie, said, ‘Let’s go over and talk to him.’ And I said,’”No. I had lunch with him 60 years or so ago. He isn’t going to remember some guy he had lunch with 60 years ago, and I don’t want to intrude’ because he was in a conversation.
“And Julie said, ‘Well, I want to meet Paul McCartney.’ So, she went over and talked to him, and he came over to see me. As he approached, he said, ‘Masque of the Red Death.’ He knew exactly where we’d met.”
Shortly after the filming of The Masque of the Red Death, McCartney moved into the attic of Asher’s parents’ 18th-century London townhouse. McCartney and John Lennon wrote many of their signature songs in a music room in the basement, including “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
Asher inspired McCartney to write classic love songs like “All My Loving,” “And I Love Her,” and “Here There and Everywhere.” Their relationship also drove him to pen the equally classic “We Can Work It Out,” “You Won’t See Me,” and “I’m Looking Through You,” which McCartney says, in the biography Many Years From Now by Barry Miles, “I seem to remember after an argument with Jane.”
Jane’s mother, Margaret Asher, taught McCartney to play the recorder, which was used on the song “The Fool on the Hill.” That song was written about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and Asher was part of the Beatles’ entourage on the band’s meditation retreat to India.

After The Masque of the Red Death, Asher would go on to star in Alfie opposite Michael Caine in 1966 and continue a diverse artistic course. Besides being a consistent presence on film, television, and stage, Asher has written three novels: The Longing, The Question, and Losing It.The Masque of the Red Death will be available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital on Jan. 25.
