Random movie facts I just know for some reason??
I’m literally a living mani ratnam encyclopedia, so beware
The cast Bheem wears on his hand in RRR is not a deliberate choice. He wears it because Tarak irl broke his hand (or wrist).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eega is the only movie for which Rajamouli wrote the story.
Nearly all of Rajamouli’s movies are centered around revenge and have (atleast) one iconic silhouette shot and weapon.
Actress Sridevi was the first choice for the role of Sivagami.
Baahubali was just supposed to be one movie.
Kilikili (the language of the Kalakeyas from Baahubali) is a legit language with grammer rules and a website dedicated to it. According to Rajamouli it’s the “worlds youngest and easiest language”
Speaking of language, Mani Ratnam’s only Telugu movie, Geethanjali, was possible because Nagarjuna (yes, the actor Nagarjuna) followed (stalked?) Mani Ratnam every morning after watching Agni Natchathiram/Gharshana.
The arc of Surya from Thalapathi begins and ends with the shot of the sun. This is because he’s modeled after Karna and Karna is the son of the Sun God. Also many important moments of Surya in the movie has the sun in the background.
Arvind Swamy and Shobana (mild spoiler ahead?) who get married in the movie were classmates when they were kids.
Arvind Swamy was not the first choice for his now iconic roles in Thalapathi, Roja, Bombay, and Thani oruvan/Dhruva.
In Iruvar/Iddaru, Kalpana (played by Aishwarya Rai) looking like Pushpavalli has an important part. The movie is the metaphorical biography of the friendship between MGR and Karunanidhi and it was recently found that Jayalitha (on whom Kalpana is based on) did in fact look similar to MGR’s first wife.
In the same movie, the role of Tamizhselvan (the Karunanidhi equivalent) was offered to and was auditioned by many, including R. Madhavan (who was rejected because his “eyes looked too young”), Mammootty (who had a look test, but rejected the role), Kamal Haasan (who rejected the role), and Arvind Swamy (who was initially finalized, had a look test, and even recorded two poems that are used in the final cut, but was unable to act, as AVM productions refused to let him, as it would bring continuity issues to his other film Minsara Kanavu/Merupu Kalalu). The role finally went to Prakash Raj, who got a national award for this role.
The song Vennila Vennila from this movie is shot in all natural light as the technicians were on strike during the schedule.
Mammootty is 70. Not a fact. Just wanted to let y’all know that Mammukka is 70 years old.
There is an alternate ending to Minsara Kanavu/Merupu Kalalu, (spoiler ahead) where Thomas does not become a priest. Instead Priya and Deva simply get married after Deva jumps off the train.
Director Gautam Vasudev Menon has two cameos in this movie. He worked as an assistant director.
For a movie, Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman wanted to use a Backstreet Boys song. When asked for permission, the production company asked for 1.5 million (not sure if INR or USD) as royalties (they ended up just creating a song from scratch). But when the same production company asked permission to use Chaiyya Chaiyya, from Dil Se for Inside Man, though they were willing to give it for free, Mani Ratnam (the director of Dil Se) and AR Rahman (the composer) demanded the same amount of money which the production company paid.
AR Rahman wanted to record an album with SPB in which Rahman wanted SPB to sing ARR’s popular songs that were originally sung by other singers.
That’s all I can remember for now. Some of these are from deep Wikipedia rabbit holes. Most from a book called Conversations with Mani Ratnam. More soon?

Twinkle Khanna jokes about Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani being based on her marriage, Karan Johar DISAGREES; says, “Everything is not about you”
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, was released this year in July.
Karan Johar's recent directorial venture, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, was a critical and commercial success. However, at the launch event of Twinkle Khanna's new book, Welcome to Paradise, the actress jokingly accused Johar of basing the film on her marriage to Akshay Kumar.

Twinkle Khanna jokes about Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani being based on her marriage, Karan Johar DISAGREES; says, “Everything is not about you”
"You based Rocky Aur Rani on my marriage, apparently," Khanna quipped, as per a report by Indian Express. "That's what everyone is saying. Is that true? How much can you leech off me?"
Johar promptly refuted the claim, stating that the film was not inspired by Khanna's personal life. "No, it was just two people from different schools of thought coming together," he explained. "That doesn't mean it's your marriage, Tina. Everything is not about you."
It is worth mentioning here that earlier, KJo admitted that he did borrow a few things from the relationship that Twinkle Khanna shares with Akshay Kumar. In an interview with Mid-Day, this year in September, he was quoted saying, “Maybe subconsciously (I got inspired). They have a tremendous friendship in their marriage,” by the portal.
The 51-year-old filmmaker had further said, “I've had dinners with them, meals with them, hung out with them. And there's a terrific kind of comfort in their camaraderie. He finds her hilarious, she finds him hilarious, for different reasons.”
Coming to the professional front, reportedly, Akshay has started shooting for his next collaboration with Karan Johar’s production banner. The upcoming flick will also star R Madhavan and Ananya Panday. It is said to be a biopic on the life of C Sankaran Nair, a lawyer and former President of the Indian National Congress.

The Best Movies on Amazon Prime Video in India
Tumblr media
Amazon Prime Video's movie acquisitions might not have the same international depth as Netflix, but it's undoubtedly stronger and richer in its local variety, with its titles spanning the Tamil, Telugu, and the Malayalam world of filmmaking in addition to Bollywood. And that's matched with a powerful collection of American imports, to deliver a collection that can more than stand its ground against the world's biggest streaming service. It lacks with its original efforts — a few are present below, for what it's worth — but it's also a lot more affordable at Rs. 999 per year, versus Netflix's Rs. 650 a month. To pick the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, we relied on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb ratings to create a shortlist. The last of them was preferred for Indian films given the shortfalls of reviews aggregators in that department. Additionally, we used our own editorial judgement to add or remove a few. This list will be updated once every few months if there are any worthy additions or if some movies are removed from the service, so bookmark this page and keep checking in. Here are the best films currently available on Amazon Prime Video in India, sorted alphabetically. 12 Years a Slave (2013) Duped into slavery on the account of a job, Steve McQueen's adaptation of a free New York black man's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) 19th-century memoir is an incredible true story, and an important watch. 3 Idiots (2009) In this satire of the Indian education system's social pressures, two friends recount their college days and how their third long-lost musketeer (Aamir Khan) inspired them to think creatively and independently in a heavily-conformist world. Co-written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who stands accused in the #MeToo movement. Agantuk (1991) In Satyajit Ray's last film, a mysterious and world-weary explorer returns to India after 35 years to see his only surviving relative, his niece, but has trouble convincing the family who he claims to be. Aladdin (1992) Disney puts its animation flavour onto the famous folk tale of a street urchin who disguises himself as a wealthy prince after finding a genie in a magic lamp, in an attempt to impress the Sultan's daughter. Amal (2007) After a poor Delhi auto-rickshaw driver (Rupinder Nagra) is named as the sole inheritor by a local billionaire (Naseeruddin Shah) just before his death, he must decide whether to keep it. American Beauty (1999) A depressed advertising executive (Kevin Spacey) in the midst of a midlife crisis falls for his teenage daughter's best friend, in Sam Mendes' satire of American middle-class that ultimately won five Oscars including Best Picture. Anand (1971) Rajesh Khanna stars as the eponymous happy-go-lucky man, who doesn't let his diagnosis of a rare form of cancer get in the way of enjoying what's in front of him. Told from the viewpoint of his doctor friend (Amitabh Bachchan). Hrishikesh Mukherjee directs. Anbe Sivam (2003) Kamal Haasan and R. Madhavan star in this Tamil cult film, in which the two are stranded over a thousand kilometres from home after heavy rain cancels all flights and strike up an unlikely friendship on their way back. Haasan also wrote the script. Andaz Apna Apna (1994) Two slackers (Aamir Khan and Salman Khan) who belong to middle-class families vie for the affections of an heiress, and inadvertently become her protectors from a local gangster in Rajkumar Santoshi's cult comedy favourite.
Tumblr media
Ankhon Dekhi (2014) After an eye-opening experience involving his daughter's marriage, a man in his late 50s (Sanjay Mishra) resolves that he won't believe anything he can't see, which naturally leads to some dramatic complications. Aruvi (2016) A social satire from a debutante writer-director, which follows an eponymous young woman (Aditi Balan), who going through a bout of existential crisis, decides to shine a light on the consumerist and misogynistic behaviours in her society. Back to the Future (1985) Not many films come close to the worldwide appeal and legacy left by this sci-fi entry featuring the iconic DeLorean that Michael J. Fox's character uses to (accidentally) time travel to when his parents were his age. Strange then that it didn't get the green light for years. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) The heavily controversial Salman Khan stars as a devout Hindu Brahmin and an ardent devotee of Hanuman, who embarks on a journey to reunite a mute six-year-old Muslim girl, lost in India, with her parents in Pakistan. Kareena Kapoor co-stars. Salman is a convicted poacher, out on bail, and accused of culpable homicide, pending appeal. A Beautiful Mind (2001) The life of John Nash, a brilliant but asocial mathematician, from his spiral into paranoid schizophrenia and working on a secret project he made up, to regaining control over his life and becoming a Nobel Laureate. The Big Sick (2017) Kumail Nanjiani stars as himself in this rom-com loosely based on his romance with his wife, in which an aspiring comedian connects with his girlfriend's parents after she falls into a mysterious coma. Blood Diamond (2006) Set during the Sierra Leone Civil War at the turn of the century, an arms smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio) promises to help a fisherman (Djimon Hounsou) find his family in exchange for a priceless diamond the latter found in a river. Bombay (1995) Set during the 1992–93 Bombay riots, writer-director Mani Ratnam offers a look at the communal tensions that cause a strain on the relationship between a Muslim woman (Manisha Koirala) and a Hindu man (Arvind Swamy). The Bourne trilogy (2002–07) Technically not a trilogy, but the first three chapters — Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum — starring Matt Damon in the lead as the titular CIA assassin suffering from amnesia were so good that they changed the longest-running spy franchise of all-time: James Bond. Brazil (1985) Terry Gilliam blends social satire with his signature visual inventiveness in this dystopian sci-fi set in a retro-future world, which follows a lowly clerk who becomes an enemy of the state after trying to correct an administrative error.
Tumblr media
Captain Fantastic (2016) After his bipolar wife suddenly dies, a single father (Viggo Mortensen), who brought up his six children living off the grid and isolated from society, must introduce them to the real world for the first time. Carol (2015) Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara star in this intimate, thoughtful and gorgeous drama about two lesbians living in polar-opposite worlds in 1950s New York, as they navigate societal customs and their own wants. Based on Patricia Highsmith's novel, The Price of Salt. Cast Away (2000) After his plane crash-lands in the Pacific, a FedEx employee (Tom Hanks) wakes up on a deserted island and must use everything at his disposal and transform himself physically to survive living alone. Catch Me If You Can (2002) Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks star in Steven Spielberg's biopic of Frank Abagnale (DiCaprio), who forged millions of dollars' worth of cheques as a teenager, while being pursued by an FBI agent (Hanks). Chak De! India (2007) Ostracised and vilified by the press and public, a former Muslim men's hockey captain (Shah Rukh Khan) plans to redeem himself by coaching the unpolished Indian women's hockey team to glory. Charade (1963) After her husband is murdered while trying to leave Paris, a young woman (Audrey Hepburn) is pursued by three men, who want a fortune he had stolen, and seeks the help of a stranger (Cary Grant). Known as “the best Hitchcock movie that Hitchcock never made”. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Frequent collaborators Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are behind this ‘remake' of the 1971 original based on Roald Dahl's 1964 book, in which the title character — a young boy (Freddie Highmore) — wins a tour of an imaginative chocolatier's chocolate factory with four other kids. Chhoti Si Baat (1976) This remake of the 1960 British film School for Scoundrels transports the story to then-Bombay, where a meek young man (Amol Palekar) turns to life-coach Colonel (Ashok Kumar) to battle a suave, bold man for the affections of a woman. Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, and Hema Malini cameo as themselves. Basu Chatterjee directs. Chupke Chupke (1975) Hrishikesh Mukherjee's remake of the Bengali film Chhadmabeshi, in which a newly-wedded husband (Dharmendra) decides to play pranks on his wife's (Sharmila Tagore) supposedly smart brother-in-law, released in the same year as Sholay. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan also star. Collateral (2004) Tom Cruise plays a hitman who takes a taxi driver, played by Jamie Foxx, hostage in Michael Mann's neo-noir crime thriller, in which the latter must figure out how to stop the former. The Conjuring (2013) A pair of paranormal investigators (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are hired by a family who have been experiencing increasingly disturbing events at their farmhouse, in this effective horror from James Wan.
Tumblr media
Crazy Rich Asians (2018) Based on the novel of the same name, a Chinese-American professor travels halfway around the world to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's extremely-rich family, where she must contend with weird relatives, jealous socialites, and the boyfriend's disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh). A Death in the Gunj (2016) In Konkona Sen Sharma's feature-length directorial debut, a shy and sensitive Indian student (Vikrant Massey) pays a heavy price for his gentleness, while on a road trip with his conceited relatives and family friends. Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin star alongside. The Death of Stalin (2017) Veep creator Armando Iannucci approaches this momentous occasion in the history of Russia through the lens of black comedy and political satire, depicting the power struggles that ensued following the titular dictator's death in 1953. Jeffrey Tambor, who stars, stands accused in the #MeToo movement. Dil Chahta Hai (2001) Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut about three inseparable childhood friends whose wildly different approach to relationships creates a strain on their friendship remains a cult favourite. Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta star. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's characters fall in love during a trip to Europe with their friends in this now iconic film — which is still playing over two decades later in a single-screen Mumbai theatre — but face hurdles as the woman's conservative father has promised her hand in marriage to someone else. Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) After a court order mandates a video cassette store owner and an RSS volunteer (Ayushmann Khurrana) and a plus-sized teacher-in-training (Bhumi Pednekar) to salvage their failing marriage, the two begin to put themselves in each other's shoes, before deciding to take part in a piggyback race. Won a National Award. Ee. Ma. Yau (2018) A son struggles to organise the grand burial he promised his dad in this Malayalam-language black comedy that's largely shot in natural light. Lijo Jose Pellissery directs. The Exorcist (1973) One of the greatest horror films of all time, that has left a lasting influence on the genre and beyond, is about the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and her mother's attempts to save her with the help of two priests who perform exorcisms. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) Roald Dahl's children's novel about a fox who steals food from three mean and wealthy farmers gets the stop-motion treatment from Wes Anderson, featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, and Michael Gambon. Fight Club (1999) Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in this cult hit from David Fincher, about a white-collared insomniac disappointed with his capitalistic lifestyle, who forms an underground fight club with a devil-may-care soapmaker, which evolves into something much more.
Tumblr media
Forrest Gump (1994) A slow-witted but kind-hearted man (Tom Hanks) takes part in a series of defining events of the second half of the 20th century in the US, while pining for his childhood love. Forushande (2016) Oscar-winner Asghar Farhadi uses Arthur Miller's play “Death of a Salesman” as his story within a story, to depict thematic parallels with the deteriorating relationship of an Iranian couple after an assault on the wife. The husband wants to find out who the attacker is against her wishes, while she deals with post-trauma stress. Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) Inspired by the 2008 Tamil-language film Subramaniapuram, Anurag Kashyap concocts a gangster epic that blends politics, vengeance, and romance as it looks at the power struggles between three crime families in and around the Jharkhand city of Dhanbad, the epicentre of the coal mafia. Ghare Baire (1984) Based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel of the same name, and set in the chaotic aftermath of the partition of Bengal, writer-director Satyajit Ray tells the story of a woman married to a forward-thinking man whose lives are upended by the appearance of the husband's radical friend. Ghostbusters (1984) A bunch of eccentric paranormal enthusiasts start a ghost-catching business in New York, and then stumble upon a plot to wreak havoc by summoning ghosts. Gave birth to one of the most iconic song lyrics in history. Gladiator (2000) Winner of five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, this Ridley Scott-directed film tells a moving story of a Roman general (Crowe) who loses everything — his family and rank —to end up as a slave and then seeks vengeance on the perpetrator (Joaquin Phoenix). The Godfather (1972) In what is considered one of the greatest films of all-time, an aging leader (Marlon Brando) of a New York mafia transfers control of his empire to his youngest son (Al Pacino), who goes from a reluctant outsider to a ruthless boss. The Godfather Part II (1974) Francis Ford Coppola's follow-up to his original, centering on Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) at the top of the pecking order while offering a look back at his father's (Robert De Niro) past, is considered by some to be better than its predecessor. Gol Maal (1979) A chartered accountant (Amol Palekar), with a knack for singing and acting, falls deep down the rabbit hole after lying to his boss that he has a twin, in this Hrishikesh Mukherjee comedy. Gone Girl (2014) Based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel and directed by David Fincher, a confounded husband (Ben Affleck) becomes the primary suspect in the sudden mystery disappearance of his wife (Rosamund Pike).
Tumblr media
Gravity (2013) Two US astronauts, a first-timer (Sandra Bullock) and another on his final mission (George Clooney), are stranded in space after their shuttle is destroyed, and then must battle debris and challenging conditions to return home. Gully Boy (2019) An aspiring, young street rapper (Ranveer Singh) from the slums of Mumbai sets out to realise his dream, while dealing with the complications that arise out of his personal life and the socioeconomic strata to which he belongs. Zoya Akhtar directs, and Alia Bhatt stars alongside. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) Alfonso Cuarón stepped behind the camera for what many consider to be the best Harry Potter film, as the boy who lived enters his third year at Hogwarts, and is told that Sirus Black, an escapee from the wizarding world prison Azkaban, is after his life. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) Working off the tone set by Alfonso Cuarón, the fourth entry in the series finds the titular chosen one pulled into an inter-school magical tournament, while battling the disturbing visions and the aching pain that stem from his forehead scar. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) In this final thrilling chapter, the famous trio — Harry, Ron, and Hermione — face a race against time to find and destroy Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes, while the students and teachers of Hogwarts unite to defend the school. Heat (1995) Al Pacino and Robert De Niro star on opposite sides of the law — the former a detective, the latter a thief — in Michael Mann's stylistic crime drama, with a group of bank robbers planning a heist unaware the police are onto them. Hera Pheri (2000) Unemployed and struggling with money, a landlord and his two tenants (Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar, and Sunil Shetty) chance on a ransom phone call and plan to collect the ransom for themselves in this remake of the 1989 Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking. How to Train Your Dragon (2010) Brought up in a world where Vikings have a tradition of being dragon slayers, a young teenager becomes an unlikely friend with a young dragon and learns there may be more to the creatures than everyone thinks. The Hurt Locker (2008) Best picture winner at the Oscars, a new leader (Jeremy Renner) of a bomb disposal squad surprises his subordinates with his views and reckless approach to the job in the Iraqi capital. Kathryn Bigelow became first woman to win best director. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Directed by Steven Spielberg off a story by George Lucas, an eponymous archaeologist (Harrison Ford) travels the world and battles a group of Nazis while looking for a mysterious artefact, in what is now often considered as one of the greatest films of all-time.
Tumblr media
Into The Wild (2007) Based on Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book, Sean Penn goes behind the camera to direct the story of a top student and athlete who gives up all possessions and savings to charity, and hitchhikes across America to live in the Alaskan wilderness. Iruvar (1997) Aishwarya Rai made her acting debut with a dual supporting role in Mani Ratnam's biographical film, which is inspired by the real-life rivalry of 1980s Tamil Nadu political icons M.G. Ramachandran (Mohanlal) and M. Karunanidhi (Prakash Raj). Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) In this satire of politics, bureaucracy, and the media, two photographers (Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani) inadvertently capture a murder while trying to expose the rich. A Mahabharata dramatisation in the third act is a renowned highlight. via Today Bharat As I watched the film again, 14 years later, I felt like I related to the characters’ struggles more than ever before. Personal is political Why Rang De Basanti continues to remain relevant today Growing up, I remember watching Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti with my family when it came on TV. We laughed as the six college friends – played by Aamir Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Sharman Joshi, and Siddharth Narayan – and Alice Patten, who played the British woman Sue Mckinley, goofed around. We cried when they suffered a loss; and ultimately, we were on the edge of our seats, rooting for them as they attempted to tell their truth to the world. Fourteen years later, my family and I could sit on the same couch, watching the same film, but with the knowledge that we aren’t on the same page. Becoming an adult for me has been inextricable from the political values and ideologies I have come to stand with, and they seem to have diverged further and further from those of my loved ones as time passed. Revisiting the film all these years later was oddly comforting and painful at the same time. Watching Karan (played by Siddharth) and Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) have disagreements with their fathers was comforting, because it felt less lonely knowing that no matter what juncture of time we are in, there will always be disagreement and strife with loved ones. And painful, because it feels like we are at that point in history where diverging political views are fracturing interpersonal relationships. In stark contrast, one of the most poignant aspects of Rang De Basanti was the friendship between Lakshman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni), a young leader of a right-wing unnamed political outfit, and Aslam, which blossoms despite their polar opposite views. Lakshman begins as an embodiment of present day moral policing squads. However, Rang De Basanti humanises him in a rare way – at no point are we shown that Lakshman lets go of all his regressive beliefs. But it’s hard to not warm up to him as he begrudgingly starts caring for Aslam and his friends in the process of shooting for Sue’s film on Indian freedom struggle revolutionaries. Lakshman and Aslam’s friendship is a reminder that such relationships are possible, especially today when Hindu-Muslim relationships are marred by real life and fictional tropes. The scene where the same bomb blast kills them both is both heartbreaking and evocative. As they lie next to each other in their last moments, looking at each other wordlessly, all that remains is their friendship. Rang De Basanti is a coming-of-age film of a bunch of seemingly carefree, and privileged (except perhaps Aslam) men and women in their 20s. They begin like any other 20-somethings of their background – they mainly care about hanging out with friends, drinking, chilling. They flirt, have romances, and dream of their future. They are skeptical about the corruption, red tape and politics in India. All of us probably know people like that in real life, which makes the characters relatable even today. But in spite of their skepticism, they decide to take a stand against when one of their friends – a fighter pilot, Ajay, played by R Madhavan – gets killed after his aircraft crashes due to faulty parts. It is then that the political becomes personal, and the personal becomes political for them. But at no point does the film attempt to show the protagonists as more than who they are – a group of college students. It is in the pursuit of justice for Ajay that the friends really take on the roles of revolutionaries in the Indian freedom struggle that they play in Sue’s film. The movie flits through the surreal scenes from the revolutionaries’ acts in the past and what the friends decide to do in real life to bring those in power to book. Neither knew they were being revolutionaries at the time; and the similarities play themselves out. Re-watching Rang De Basanti felt like déjà vu – not because of the nostalgia it brought on, but because this 14-year-old film is so reflective of recent times. The youth of the country have often been written off as being self-absorbed, insincere, spoiled and ungrateful. However, they have had a major role to play in the past decade, especially the past couple of years in voicing dissent. After Ajay’s death, his mother and his friends march with candles to India Gate and hold a vigil for him, as if it was the most natural thing to do. We have seen similar things happening in the past – whether it was the protests following the Nirbhaya gangrape in Delhi in 2012, the Lok Pal Bill protests of 2011, the Disha gangrape protests in Hyderabad in 2019, more recently, the protests against Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens. People like you and me, led by the students and the youth, marched on to the streets, unarmed, unprepared, with no organisation other than the time and place, demanding accountability and action from those in power. Watching blows and lathis being rained on the peaceful candlelight vigil holders in Rang De Basanti, and the black commandos shooting at the unarmed college students at the radio station in the climax of the film felt chillingly familiar. Not very long ago, our television screens were full of distressing visuals of students in Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi, trying to take refuge in the library as the police allegedly hurled tear gas and stones into the premises. As the male protagonists all die at the radio station, they ignite a spark that turns into a fire of resistance in the film, with many other students saying that they will continue the movement, demand justice. There are similar real-life stories too – for instance, Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide at Hyderabad University sparked nationwide protests. He became the face of a movement that he didn’t live to see, and didn’t set out to become. What makes the film even more evocative is its music. Composed by AR Rahman and tracks written by Prasoon Joshi, the music shows yet again that poetry and protest have gone hand in hand. Whether it was 'Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna' during the Indian freedom struggle, 'Khoon Chala' and 'Roobaroo' in Rang De Basanti, or Faiz Ahmed Faiz's 'Hum Dekhenge' during the CAA-NRC protests, these poems and songs have become anthems of the movements themselves. One aspect of Rang De Basanti worth critiquing is that it is somewhat premised in white gaze – it all begins with a white woman coming to India, wanting to make a film on Indian revolutionaries, and at some points, lecturing the Indian characters on their own country. There are also some quintessential shots of Indian countryside and festivities that you can imagine would appeal to a white audience. However, this is not an overwhelming aspect in the film, and it’s still the college students’ journeys – through love, laughter and friendship – that are still at the heart of Rang De Basanti. The protagonists do commit the condemnable act of killing the defense minister in the film, but their angst with the system, the injustices it perpetuates, and the impunity of those in power are sentiments that will remain universal. Rang De Basanti also portrays something that we are seeing among everyday people. We tend to wear armchair activism, skepticism about politics, and being ‘apolitical’ as a matter of pride, until we find out that our own are being affected. However, even the act of being ‘apolitical’ is a political one. Growing up is not just about taking responsibility for our own actions, but also speaking up for the community. Rang De Basanti iterates that the personal is very much political, and it will always be.

“It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.” - Oscar WildeWords have the power to change us.While articles are a healthy part of any information diet, books often reflect a deeper wealth of wisdom. (It’s quite an accomplishment to put 200 or more pages-worth of witty words of wisdom together). If you read only 10 startup books in 2020, here’s what I’d recommend you read...PS - There are no affiliate links below. I recommend only books I've read and feel would be valuable to entrepreneurs.10. The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben HorowitzBook Image*Why Buy: *Business is difficult. Especially as the CEO of your startup.Ben Horowitz has been there and back as the CEO of Opsware, product manager of Netscape, and venture capital co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz.Pros: In The Hard Thing About Hard Things, Horowitz gets into the nitty-gritty details of managing a company. He covers topics like firing employees, the dangers of promoting the wrong people (and the right people at the wrong time) and managing the company and yourself.Cons: Until you’re managing employees, this book may not be valuable until you plan on doing so. Further, some of the high-stress moments were self-inflicting from taking venture capital. The profanity in this book may be off-putting to you too (one use of the “n” word, several uses of the “f” word, and several other cuss words sprinkled in it).9. Built to Sell by John WarrillowBook ImageWhy Buy: Even if you have no intention of selling your business, it’s valuable to know what you should do to remove yourself from being a bottleneck in your business.Pros: Built to Sell gives you the mindset and strategy to make sure you spend more time working on your business rather than in your business.Cons: Unless you’ve got a lot of capital to invest in employees, you need to be the bottleneck to do the work. That said, even as a one-person business, standardizing your business will help streamline your productivity.8. Monetizing Innovation by Madhavan Ramanujam and Georg TackeBook ImageWhy Buy: Pricing your product right is often an overlooked growth lever.A $10/month product would pull in $1,420 a month in revenue if you reinvest all revenue into acquiring more customers (yay compounding interest!). But bumping up your product to $29/month would pull in over $1.1 million a month! That’s 819x more monthly revenue.Pros: Monetizing Innovation is the best book I’ve read on pricing strategy. Some books only talk about the psychology of pricing or tell you to optimize for “value-based pricing.” This book goes over several elements of pricing strategy and why you should pick one strategy over another. Some of the principles I talk about on pricing strategies I’ve borrowed from this book.Cons: Some of the principles aren’t easy to apply without several potential customers to do a price-test. This is why I recommend you use the Van Westendorp pricing method to find the acceptable price range of your potential customers.7. The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff CoxBook ImageWhy Buy: Business operations are an often overlooked part of building a healthy company.Pros: Yes, the cover of The Goal looks like a boring business book from the ‘80s. But you’ll find the story inside to be very compelling and insightful on how to operate a company. There were a few counter-intuitive principles Goldratt teaches, such as why having employees doing nothing is a necessary part of business efficiency.Cons: You may find the story used in the book a little unrealistic at times. But there are moments when the story does help paint a clear picture of the importance of the core concept.6. What’s Best Next by Matt PermanBook ImageWhy Buy: Entrepreneurs often lack a clear sense of purpose in what they are doing and why. What’s Best Next will give necessary clarity on productivity, understanding your life goal, and your life mission without all the fluff I’ve read from other books on this topic. If you have an open mind, this book comes at productivity and purpose from a Christian perspective.Pros: Having a clear mission and life goal has been my greatest source of motivation. This book inspired Growth Ramp’s mission to help 1,000 entrepreneurs from idea to scale, along with several other life goals I am pursuing.I’ve gifted and recommended this book to fellow entrepreneurs the most.Cons: The last 1/3 of the book on Perman’s productivity system wasn’t super insightful.Further while having a life mission and goal is a great motivation, in itself it won’t pay your bills. Like a few other books on this list, that’s not the fault of the author, but the necessary limited scope of this book.5. Never Split the Difference by Chris RossBook ImageWhy Buy: Whether you’re selling yourself to a co-founder, selling your idea to an investor, or selling your product to a customer, you need to know how to sell. Negotiation is a critical and often overlooked part of successful sales.Pros: Never Split the Difference provides a gripping story in one chapter, followed by a valuable negotiation lesson in the next chapter.I used one suggestion in this book to retain ~$3,000 MRR in one negotiation.Cons: I put this in position #5 because of its importance to starting a successful startup, not because the topic isn’t covered well. As important as negotiating is, you still only need it in the area of formal and informal sales.4. Positioning by Jack Trout and Al RiesBook ImageWhy Buy: If you struggle to separate your startup from the competition, Positioning is an excellent primer to point you in the right direction.Pros: Much of the fundamental principles of positioning come from this book. You’ll learn about principles like why you should be #1 in your market, what to do when you’re #2, and why market leaders attempt to own a single word.Cons: Trout and Ries don’t share many specific how-to details in this book. Much of the data also seems to suffer from survivorship bias as they only mention what works after-the-fact.Honorable Mention: Marketing Warfare, 20th Anniversary Edition by Jack Trout and Al Ries. This book dives deeper into positioning and gives some how-to guidance. Like Positioning, this book also suffers from survivorship bias.3. Traction by Gabriel Weinberg and Justin MaresBook Image*Why Buy: *Having a great product is one thing. Having traction is quite another.Pros: Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares pull their experience of creating and growing successful startups. The duo then interviewed over 40 founders and pooled their knowledge to help entrepreneurs learn what it takes to get customers in their book, Traction.Weinberg and Mare’s work inspired my article of the 12 core marketing channels. You’ll find a lot of solid ideas to test and frameworks to apply in this book to help you get your first 1,000 customers and scale from there.*Cons: *What’s missing from this book is understanding the messaging you need to get traction. There’s a chance you may stumble upon the right words you should use to sell more product. But I don’t like leaving anything to chance.2. Reality in Advertising by Rosser ReevesBook Image*Why Buy: *Do you want to improve your messaging? Yet do you hate all the over-the-top copywriting which screams “BUY NOW!!!” in bold red letters and yellow highlighter? If so, you’ll likely connect with Rosser Reeves’s copywriting philosophy as I have from reading Reality in Advertising.Reeves was one of the greatest American advertising executives very few people know about today, which is a shame. In addition to popularizing the power of a strong USP, Reeve’s career highlights include creating:Anacin’s “a headache medicine for fast relief.” (Yup, the same USP Advil borrowed 30 years later). In 18 months, Reeve’s Anacin ad campaign increased its sales from $18 million to $54 million (source).M&M's "melts in your mouth, not in your hand."Colgate toothpaste’s "cleans your breath while it cleans your teeth."Dwight Eisenhower's presidential ads for the 1952 election. Reeve’s TV ads helped Eisenhower beat Adlai Stevenson 442 to 89 in the electoral vote (source).Marketing legend David Ogilvy spoke highly of his mentor Reeves, saying, “Reeves taught me more about advertising than anybody I’ve ever known.” (Source)Pros: Reality in Advertising has a lot of solid information on USPs and general information on marketing. Reeves takes a similar philosophy on marketing as I do: emotional marketing is valuable (e.g. brand image, video, “originality,” and “creativity.”). But a clear message which sells is more valuable to increasing sales.Cons: Some of Reeves’s case studies to back up his claims has very little verifiable evidence. Still, some of what he teaches aligns with my experience, so I won’t throw out all claims he makes.1. The Lean Product Playbook by Dan OlsenBook Image*Why Buy: *Nearly everything I wish The Lean Startup covered, Dan Olsen covers in his phenomenal book, The Lean Product Playbook.Olsen was a product leader at Intuit, one of the first tech companies to create a culture of the importance of creating customer-first products. He’s also consulted for Facebook, Box, and Medallia as a product manager. Much of his experience shines through in this book.Pros: Throughout the book, Olsen provides a lot of frameworks and step-by-step advice on how to create a successful product. Olsen covers a lot of ground in his book, including:How to conduct customer interviews. How to define your value proposition. How to prioritize features. How to create an MVP.How to apply user experience principles to your product.Cons: I felt Olsen lacked on the marketing-side as a product manager (i.e. product marketing). His discussion on creating customer personas wasn’t thorough and the information on marketing MVP tests was rather thin. His focus is very SaaS-centric, but I’ve used Olsen’s principles for non-SaaS products and they still work.

After Rs 21,000-cr turnover in 2019-20, HAL eyes higher growth this year
Tumblr media
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Tuesday announced a record turnover of over Rs 21,100 crore (provisional and unaudited) for 2019-20. This amounts to a growth of 7 per cent over the previous year’s turnover of Rs 19,705 crore.
This achievement comes despite “difficulties in cash flows, interruptions in operations due to workmens' agitation and the interruption arising in March due to the Covid-19 lockdown. It has affected the final tests and certification of certain additional aircraft that were under final stages of production,” said HAL in a press release.
During the year 2019-20, HAL said it has delivered 31 aircraft/helicopters and 117 new engines. It has also overhauled 199 aircraft/helicopters and 490 engines.
Speaking to Business Standard after the announcement, HAL’s chairman R Madhavan said the company’s healthy order book made it likely that the coming year would see similar growth.

The Brahm Prakash Hall at SHAR (Sriharikota High Altitude Range) brims with engineers shuffling their data sheets and reports. They speak excitedly to each other about their subsystems. To a stranger, however technically advanced, their exchanges sound like Greek and Latin, riddled with acronyms and jargon. Only the assembly of 400-odd engineers can understand each other perfectly.
The Mission Readiness Review (MRR) is in session. We are just a few days away from a major launch campaign. Each of the engineers responsible for a particular subsystem is getting ready to go on stage and present details of the tests carried out on it. Problems, solutions, tests, last-minute tweaks—everything is covered.
The group is an amazing mix of veterans and greenhorns and everyone in between. Anyone who is part of the project and has something to say is there. I sit next to the chairman and senior centre directors. Retired pioneers like me who are experienced experts in certain fields form an integral part of the MRR. To the newest recruit attending an MRR for the first time it is a thrilling and challenging experience.
As one of the senior engineers finishes his presentation, a voice from the last row raises an issue. It is a junior engineer. There is absolute silence as everyone in the room gives him a patient hearing. The engineer who is making the presentation takes notes and gives a detailed response. It really does not matter that the questioner is quite junior in the hierarchy, for in that hall there is absolute technical democracy and no voice is stifled. Everyone knows that many an important issue has come to light at an MRR and at times major failures have been averted because someone raised a pertinent question.
The MRR epitomizes the functioning of ISRO, where the work ethics had evolved over the years. Democracy has always been the key word. Every issue raised is analysed and addressed with utmost seriousness. This in turn has yielded results which are unique and unusual in a government-run scientific department.
Homi Bhabha, the innovator who changed the bureaucratic style of running scientific organizations, made sure that scientists determined their own policies. He also insisted that they were the administrative heads of their organizations and were answerable only to the prime minister. ISRO under Sarabhai followed the same path, with more procedural innovations suited to the unforgiving nature of space technology.
Openness has been the hallmark of ISRO in all its activities. The MRR is just one example. Whether it is in the planning process or long-term goals definition, budget formulation or progress reviews, design reviews, quality and reliability assessment, recruitment or promotion of personnel, transparency has always played a vital role.
Because of its strategic nature, space technology is closely guarded by its creators. ISRO therefore had to develop its own technology from scratch with a great deal of trial and error. But our results have always been open for free scrutiny by the public. Failures and successes in our field are splashed across the sky for all to see. Our major missions are conducted in the full glare of live media spotlight and the world can learn in real time of our success or failure.
Today, we are no longer a mere handful of engineers experimenting with sounding rockets. The annual budget of the organization was a few lakhs of rupees in 1963. This has grown to several thousand crores. ISRO has more than 20,000 employees. In fact, we are now seriously trying not to add to the numbers by transferring repetitive work to the industry.
But most importantly, ISRO has built a strong and confident human resource pool ready to take on many more challenges. Advanced countries have recognized that ISRO is on par with many developed countries in the field of space technology. And we achieved this by ourselves, on a shoestring budget. The average Indian is proud of ISRO’s achievements and that means a lot to us.
Our centres are seamlessly filled with fresh technical personnel every decade without any discontinuity of the programmes. Most of the technical manpower is drawn from graduates from all over the country who come from lesser-known institutions. and many of these engineers and scientists have turned out to be outstanding leaders in their own fields.
By the late 1990s, when the IT boom in the country hit our programmes, our young recruits were lured away with fat salaries. But the trend reversed when the government revised its salaries upwards and offered lifelong perks which could never be matched by the IT firms. More importantly, ISRO still had exciting programmes compared to the mindnumbing jobs the software companies had to offer. Slowly the young people began to trickle back.
Around that time I was asked by the then chairman, Kasturirangan, to tour the ISRO centres and talk to the scientists and engineers, particularly the young ones, to find out what they felt about their work environment. I visited all the centres and spoke to them about their joys and frustrations, and asked them what needed to be done to keep them at ISRO.
Two surprising findings came through. one, that they all were quite happy with their assignments and the visibility of the overall goals of the organization vis-à-vis their contributions. Two, the salary differences between ISRO and the private organizations did not bother them as much as we had feared. Their complaints were more mundane ones about the non-availability of high-speed internet connections and access to PCs. We were able to tackle these issues quite easily over the next couple of months.
ISRO today is often held up as an example of a particularly well-run and result-oriented government organization.
[…]
The ISRO family has considerable job satisfaction because we can see for ourselves the application of our contribution to national development. We have even been able to monetize our products even though we are not a commercial organization. For example, today, products and services including satellite launch services are made available to national and international users on a commercial basis through ISRO’s commercial arm, the Antrix Corporation.
By 2015, within a short span of forty-odd years, ISRO had built and launched seventy-two satellites of increasing complexities. Our own remote sensing satellites, communication satellites and science satellites circled the earth in polar and geosynchronous orbits. The Chandrayaan moon mission and the Mars Orbiter Mission caught the imagination of the nation. The capability of ISRO in the satellite-building area rivalled that of the most advanced countries of the world and the data from the satellites were in demand internationally
Side by side, by 2015 more than twenty-five successful launches of PSLV had taken place successively, setting a kind of international record. With regular improvements in performance and optimization, the payload capacity increased from 1000 kg to about 1850 kg, depending on the choice of configuration.
The PSLV vehicle, now internationally recognized as a highly reliable and cost-effective rocket, is much soughtafter by various countries for launching their remote sensing satellites into sun synchronous polar orbits. Variants of PSLV launched the lunar mission, the Mars Orbiter Mission and even a small GSAT synchronous satellite. Our own fleet of remote-sensing satellites is also performing excellently. And so are the large INSAT communication spacecraft orbited aboard Ariane rockets.
By this time so many chairmen have come and gone—Sarabhai, MGK Menon, Dhawan, UR Rao, Kasturirangan, Madhavan Nair and Radhakrishnan—and not once was there a glitch in the programme because the man at the helm had changed. In 2015 at a GSLV launch when an important Indian-made cryostage proved its worth, I realized something exciting. Almost every single person at the helm, right from the ISRO chairman down to the mission director, was new! They had all assumed charge just a few months before.
