I’m rereading Quintana of Charyn at the moment and I’m so emotional at how much Gargarin loves Froi. 😭
I love Gargarin and Froi’s relationship so much. ❤️

Finished my Finnikin of the Rock reread. It’s still by far my least favorite of the trilogy and I still just can’t warm up to Evanjalin in it tho I come to like her later (I totally get why she is the way she is - it’s a well-written character -just not my jam.) It’s very well written and I do enjoy it but doesn’t do it for me the way the other two do. But woooo on to book 2, which I adore adore adore!
Btw @aysekira if you do decide to read this trilogy and find yourself blah on book 1 just skim/skip and move on to book 2. You can read book 2 fine without reading book 1. (Book 2/3 are just one long novel but book 1 is not that entwined.) And I promise Froi of the Exiles and Quintana of Charyn are amazing!

Book asks 4, 13, 50, 60.
4. a poetry book that reads like a story
Ooh, I don’t know that I’ve read any poetry books! I do occasionally read novels in verse, but if I come across a poem it tends to be isolated.
13. your favorite romance novel
ᴮᵉᵗ ᴹᵉ. Bet Me. BET ME. It’s Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie!! 😍😍😍 A breezy, bantery, perfectly built, fairytale contemporary (well, as of 2004ish, but it really doesn’t feel dated!) with a fat MC, True Love, and great side characters. Also copious mentions of food - I fell in love with chicken marsala after reading this book when I was a teen!
50. a book that made you cry a LOT
Oof, I can be a really soft touch sometimes! But I’ll say Quintana of Charyn by Melina Marchetta, because I’ve read it probably ten times and have literally never gotten through it without absolutely weeping. (I swear, if I even start chapter 39, I’m already breaking down a little. “One of Isaboe’s aunts placed the babe in Finnikin’s arms and he pressed a kiss to its brow, a blessing between a father and a son.“ 😭😭😭)
60. a book that you think about at 3am
Probably whatever I’ve read most recently! Otherwise something Melina Marchetta (sorry, this is getting boring, but her writing rhythms are physiological for me at this point) or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which is an extremely formative book for me.
Book it up!

I keep forgetting just how dark the Lumatere Chronicles were but every once in a while i get a flashback. How was this ever marketed as YA?

Rereading the Lumatere Chronicles and damn so many of the couples in this series had horrible first impressions like???? Finnikin was so pissed when Isaboe joined him and Topher and then even more pissed when he realized she was just as smart as him, Trevanion yelled at Beatriss for being incompetent and then she slapped him in the face when HE was incompetent, Froi called Quintana a whore when he was like 5 feet from her room, pretty sure Perri and Tesadora tried to kill each other at some point?? even more minor couples like August and Abian ("pity the man who shares her bed" sir that would be YOU) and Harker and Jorja ("he hated me for the first five years of our marriage!") And don't even get me started on Lucian and Phaedra
But then they all kind of juxtapose beautifully with Grijio and Florenza's meet-cute at the end of the series, like after all of the horrific things that happened to these people there's some hope for goodness in the future ya know? like finally a good start

Taking a quick break from all the Manorian content to recommend this series. I’ve read it a couple of times but it’s been a while so a lot of it feels new this time around. There’s angst, slow burns (Lucian and Phaedra dear lord 🥵), politics, surviving after trauma, squabbling families, and magical curses. Lots of curses.
