The Disciples of Jesus Lesson 06: Levi Matthew
What comes to mind when you think of the worst kind of sinner?  Drug dealers?  Sex offenders?  Mass murderers?  How would you feel if Jesus called someone like that to be one of His disciples?
Let’s read together Matthew 9:9-13; Mark 2:14-17; and Luke 5:26-32.
Today we are going to study the disciple Levi Matthew.  He was a tax collector when he was called by Jesus to follow Him.  Matthew gave a farewell feast at his house and invited other tax collectors to attend.  Jesus was criticized by the Pharisees for sitting and eating with these men.  What is so bad about being a tax collector?
Let’s read together Luke 18:9-14; Matthew 5:46-47; and Matthew 18:17.
In the time of Jesus, the Jews considered tax collectors to be one of the worst kinds of sinners.  Tax collectors collected taxes levied on the Jewish people by the Roman government.  Any Jew who worked as a tax collector was considered to be a traitor to Israel.
Let’s read together Luke 3:12-13.
In addition, tax collectors had a reputation for being corrupt.  It seems that many tax collectors in that time were taking more money than they should, pocketing the extra for themselves.
So, why did Jesus choose a tax collector as one of His disciples?  Wouldn’t this prejudice many Jews against Jesus?
Let’s read together Luke 19:1-9 and Matthew 21:31
The Pharisees did not want to associate with tax collectors because they did not want to be contaminated by their “sinfulness.”  Jesus was unafraid of mingling with the “worst” sinners,  Jesus demonstrated that He can even forgive the worst kinds of sinners, if they wholeheartedly confess their sins and repent.
The “worst” sinners in the eyes of Jesus are self-righteous people like the Pharisees who refuse to repent.  That is why Jesus said repentant tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom of heaven before the Pharisees.
Let’s read together Romans 2:11; James 2:1; and Jude 1:23.
Friend, will you follow Jesus’ example and share the Gospel with everyone, including the “worst” sinners?

Kristen Bjerre (May 17, 1869 - 1943) was a Danish painter and publican. He studied at the Royal Academy and with P.S. Krøyer, and then settled near his home town Lemvig, where he bought a small pub and boarding house in Ferring in 1891.
Many artists and writers came there, including some of Kristen's brother Niels Bjerre's friends, such as the painters Jens Vige and Jens Søndergaard who even bought a summer house there, at Bovbjerg where Kristen's hotel relocated in 1901. Writers included Thøger Larsen, Jeppe Aakjær, and Johan Skjoldborg.

The publican George "Bantam Cock" Howard had organised the gathering. A short, stout man with jet-black eyes and a sharp tongue, Howard was immediately on his feet, lashing Bligh's critics even before they had time to emerge:
There were several in the town whom he should designate croakers, that were watching and spying to try to find some speck on which they could form a complaint, and who were ever ready with lengthened faces up cry pity for the poor blacks. (Cheers.) Some of those gentlemen should have been in Maryborough as long as he had, should have been heard, seen, and felt the merciless outrages these wretches, called by the croakers "the poor blacks," had committed . . . What man amongst them was there who could say but that the blacks had got anything but what they deserved? What man was there who did not feel it?

No seas “malo” o te impediremos comprar, vender y acceder a tu propio dinero.

Is there another country besides the United States where a citizen displaying the flag has become... well, a red flag? Especially on your car. Very nearly nobody but specific types of people have the flag up on a daily basis and I now have two of them as neighbors. Yay. 🙃

Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee Beginning of the Lenten Triodion Commemorated on February 25
Let us flee from the pride of the Pharisee! And learn humility from the Publican’s tears! Let us cry to our Savior, have mercy on us, only merciful One!
The Sunday after the Sunday of Zacchaeus is devoted to the Publican and the Pharisee. At Vespers the night before, the Triodion (the liturgical book used in the services of Great Lent) begins.
Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee who scrupulously observed the requirements of religion: he prayed, fasted, and contributed money to the Temple. These are very good things, and should be imitated by anyone who loves God. We who may not fulfill these requirements as well as the Pharisee did should not feel entitled to criticize him for being faithful. His sin was in looking down on the Publican and feeling justified because of his external religious observances.
The second man was a Publican, a tax-collector who was despised by the people. He, however, displayed humility, and this humility justified him before God (Luke 18:14).
The lesson to be learned is that we possess neither the Pharisee’s religious piety, nor the Publican’s repentance, through which we can be saved. We are called to see ourselves as we really are in the light of Christ’s teaching, asking Him to be merciful to us, deliver us from sin, and to lead us on the path of salvation.
Two weeks before the beginning of the Fast, as part of our preparation for Great Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha, the Church prescribes the reading of Saint Mark's Gospel. From Monday to Friday the focus is on the end times, and the Savior's death and burial.
